We investigate the mechanics of two ribbons bound at one end and pulled apart at the other ends. We observe the development of a boundary layer at their junction and provide simple analytical expressions for its geometry. Remarkably, the ratio of the bending stiffnesses fully prescribes its shape independently of the pulling force. Our results challenge the standard assumption of neglecting bending stiffness of thin shells at large tensile loading. In addition, we show how the rotational stiffness of the structure exhibits a non-linear but universal behavior. Our findings are relevant to a number of systems where slender structures such as rods and plates are coupled and provide a straightforward method for measuring stiffness of thin membranes.

Lack of stiffness often limits thin shape-shifting structures to small scales. The large in-plane transformations required to distort the metrics are indeed commonly achieved by using soft hydrogels or elastomers. We introduce here a versatile single-step method to shapeprogram stiff inflated structures, opening the door for numerous large scale applications, ranging from space deployable structures to emergency shelters. This technique relies on channel patterns obtained by heat-sealing superimposed flat quasi-inextensible fabric sheets. Inflating channels induces an anisotropic in-plane contraction and thus a possible change of Gaussian curvature. Seam lines, which act as a director field for the in-plane deformation, encode the shape of the deployed structure. We present three patterning methods to quantitatively and analytically program shells with non-Euclidean metrics. In addition to shapes, we describe with scaling laws the mechanical properties of the inflated structures. When a thin film moderately adherent to a substrate is subjected to residual stress, the cooperation between fracture and delamination leads to unusual fracture patterns, such as spirals, alleys of crescents and various types of strips, all characterized by a robust characteristic length scale. We focus on the propagation of a duo of cracks: two fractures in the film connected by a delamination front and progressively detaching a strip. We show experimentally that the system selects an equilibrium width on the order of 25 times the thickness of the coating and independent of both fracture and adhesion energies. We investigate numerically the selection of the width and the condition for propagation by considering Griffith's criterion and the principle of local symmetry. In addition, we propose a simplified model based on the criterion of maximum of energy release rate, which provides insights of the physical mechanisms leading to these regular patterns, and predicts the effect of material properties on the selected width of the detaching strip.

Straight cracks are observed in thin coatings under residual tensile stress, resulting into the classical network pattern observed in china crockery, old paintings or dry mud. Here, we present a novel fracture mechanism where delamination and propagation occur simultaneously, leading to the spontaneous self-replication of an initial template. Surprisingly, this mechanism is active below the standard critical tensile load for channel cracks and selects a robust interaction length scale on the order of 30 times the film thickness. Depending on triggering mechanisms, crescent alleys, spirals or long bands are generated over a wide range of experimental parameters. We describe with a simple physical model the selection of the fracture path and provide a configuration diagram displaying the different failure modes.

Blisters are commonly observed when an adhesive sheet is carelessly deposited on a plate. Although such blisters are usually not desired for practical applications, we show through model experiments on angular blisters how material properties can be deduced from height profile measurements. In particular the typical curvature of the crests is found proportional to an elasto-capillary length that compares the bending stiffness of the sheet with adhesion energy. In addition, the radius of the tip allows to estimate the product of this length with the thickness of the sheet. The relevance of these results to realistic random configurations is finally confirmed.

We study the peculiar wrinkling pattern of an elastic plate stamped into a spherical mold. We show that the wavelength of the wrinkles decreases with their amplitude, but reaches a maximum when the amplitude is of the order of the thickness of the plate. The force required for compressing the wrinkled plate presents a maximum independent of the thickness. A model is derived and verified experimentally for a simple one-dimensional case. This model is extended to the initial situation through an effective Young modulus representing the mechanical behavior of wrinkled state. The theoretical predictions are shown to be in good agreement with the experiments. This approach provides a complement to the "tension field theory" developed for wrinkles with unconstrained amplitude.

We study the adhesion of an elastic sheet on a rigid spherical substrate. Gauss'Theorema Egregium shows that this operation necessarily generates metric distortions (i.e. stretching) as well as bending. As a result, a large variety of contact patterns ranging from simple disks to complex branched shapes are observed as a function of both geometrical and material properties. We describe these different morphologies as a function of two non-dimensional parameters comparing respectively bending and stretching energies to adhesion. A complete configuration diagram is finally proposed.

We show that thin sheets under boundary confinement spontaneously generate a universal self-similar hierarchy of wrinkles. From simple geometry arguments and energy scalings, we develop a formalism based on wrinklons, the transition zone in the merging of two wrinkles, as building-blocks of the global pattern. Contrary to the case of crumple paper where elastic energy is focused, this transition is described as smooth in agreement with a recent numerical work. This formalism is validated from hundreds of nm for graphene sheets to meters for ordinary curtains, which shows the universality of our description. The hairs of a painting brush withdrawn from a wetting liquid self-assemble into clumps whose sizes rely on a balance between liquid surface tension and hairs bending rigidity. Here we study the situation of an immersed carpet in an evaporating liquid bath : the free extremities of the hairs are forced to pierce the liquid interface. The compressive capillary force on the tip of flexible hairs leads to buckling and collapse. However we find that the spontaneous association of hairs into stronger bundles may allow them to resist capillary buckling. We explore in detail the different structures obtained and compare them with similar patterns observed in micro-structured surfaces such as carbon nanotubes "forests"., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

The interaction between elasticity and capillarity is used to produce three dimensional structures, through the wrapping of a liquid droplet by a planar sheet. The final encapsulated 3D shape is controlled by tayloring the initial geometry of the flat membrane. A 2D model shows the evolution of open sheets to closed structures and predicts a critical length scale below which encapsulation cannot occur, which is verified experimentally. This {\it elastocapillary length} is found to depend on the thickness as $h^{3/2}$, a scaling favorable to miniaturization which suggests a new way of mass production of 3D micro- or nano-scale objects., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures
