Nucleic acids such as mRNA have emerged as a promising therapeutic modality with the capability of addressing a wide range of diseases. Lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) as a delivery platform for nucleic acids were used in the COVID-19 vaccines and have received much attention. While modern manufacturing processes which involve rapidly mixing an organic stream containing the lipids with an aqueous stream containing the nucleic acids are conceptually straightforward, detailed understanding of LNP formation and structure is still limited and scale-up can be challenging. Mathematical and computational methods are a promising avenue for deepening scientific understanding of the LNP formation process and facilitating improved process development and control. This article describes strategies for the mechanistic modeling of LNP formation, starting with strategies to estimate and predict important physicochemical properties of the various species such as diffusivities and solubilities. Subsequently, a framework is outlined for constructing mechanistic models of reactor- and particle-scale processes. Insights gained from the various models are mapped back to product quality attributes and process insights. Lastly, the use of the models to guide development of advanced process control and optimization strategies is discussed., Comment: 67 pages, 10 figures

This study uses advanced numerical methods to estimate the mean force potential (PMF) between charged, polarizable colloidal particles in dense electrolytes. We observe that when the Debye screening length, $\lambda_{\mathrm{D}}$, is below the hydrated ion size, the PMF shows discernible oscillations of purely electrostatic origin as opposed to chemical affinity, in addition to the expected decay in DLVO theory. Moreover, our findings suggest concentrated electrolytes are significantly less efficient at muting electrostatic interactions in electrostatically stabilized colloidal suspensions, potentially having significant implications for our understanding of colloidal stability and the forces that govern the behavior of concentrated charged soft matter systems beyond DLVO theory.

Nanopore-based sensing platforms have transformed single-molecule detection and analysis. The foundation of nanopore translocation experiments lies in conductance measurements, yet existing models, which are largely phenomenological, are inaccurate in critical experimental conditions such as thin and tightly fitting pores. Of the two components of the conductance blockade, channel and access resistance, the access resistance is poorly modeled. We present a comprehensive investigation into the access resistance and associated conductance blockade in thin nanopore membranes. By combining a first-principles approach, multi-scale modeling, and experimental validation, we propose a unified theoretical modeling framework. The analytical model derived as a result surpasses current approaches across a broad parameter range. Beyond advancing theoretical understanding, our framework's versatility enables analyte size inference and predictive insights into conductance blockade behavior. Our results will facilitate the design and optimization of nanopore devices for diverse applications, including nanopore base calling and data storage.

Conventional lithium-ion batteries, and many next-generation technologies, rely on organic electrolytes with multiple solvents to achieve the desired physicochemical and interfacial properties. The complex interplay between these properties can often be elucidated via the coordination environment of the cation. We develop a theory for the coordination shell of cations in non-aqueous solvent mixtures that can be applied with high fidelity, up to super-concentrated electrolytes. Our theory can naturally explain simulation and experimental values of cation solvation in ''classical'' non-aqueous electrolytes. Moreover, we utilise our theory to understand general design principles of emerging classes of non-aqueous electrolyte mixtures, such as high entropy electrolytes. It is hoped that this theory provides a systematic framework to understand simulations and experiments which engineer the solvation structure and ionic associations of concentrated non-aqueous electrolytes.

Understanding the bulk and interfacial properties of super-concentrated electrolytes, such as ionic liquids (ILs), has attracted significant attention lately for their promising applications in supercapacitors and batteries. Recently, McEldrew \textit{et al.} developed a theory for reversible ion associations in bulk ILs, which accounted for the formation of all possible Cayley tree clusters and a percolating ionic network (gel). Here we adopt and develop this approach to understand the associations of ILs in the electrical double layer at electrified interfaces. With increasing charge of the electrode, the theory predicts a transition from a regime dominated by a gelled or clustered state to a regime dominated by free, crowded ions. This transition from gelation to crowding is conceptually similar to the overscreening to crowding transition.

The structure of polar liquids and electrolytic solutions, such as water and aqueous electrolytes, at interfaces underlies numerous phenomena in physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering. In this work, we develop a continuum theory that captures the essential features of dielectric screening by polar liquids at charged interfaces, including oscillations in charge and mass, starting from the molecular properties of the solvent. The theory predicts an anisotropic dielectric tensor of interfacial polar liquids previously studied in molecular dynamics simulations. We explore the effect of the interfacial polar liquid properties on the capacitance of the electrode/electrolyte interface and on hydration forces between two plane-parallel polarized surfaces. In the linear response approximation, we obtain simple formulas for the characteristic decay lengths of molecular and ionic profiles at the interface.

Dip-coating consists in withdrawing a substrate from a bath to coat it with a thin liquid layer. This process is well-understood for homogeneous fluids, but heterogeneities such as particles dispersed in the liquid lead to more complex situations. Indeed, particles introduce a new length scale, their size, in addition to the thickness of the coating film. Recent studies have shown that at first order, the thickness of the coating film for monodisperse particles can be captured by an effective capillary number based on the viscosity of the suspension, providing that the film is thicker than the particle diameter. However, suspensions involved in most practical applications are polydisperse, characterized by a wide range of particle sizes, introducing additional length scales. In this study, we investigate the dip coating of suspensions having a bimodal size distribution of particles. We show that the effective viscosity approach is still valid in the regime where the coating film is thicker than the diameter of the largest particles, although bidisperse suspensions are less viscous than monodisperse suspensions of the same solid fraction. We also characterize the intermediate regime that consists of a heterogeneous coating layer and where the composition of the film is different from the composition of the bath. A model to predict the probability of entraining the particles in the liquid film depending on their sizes is proposed and captures our measurements. In this regime, corresponding to a specific range of withdrawal velocities, capillarity filters the large particles out of the film.

A variety of polymeric surfaces, such as anti-corrosion coatings and polymer-modified asphalts, are prone to blistering when exposed to moisture and air. As water and oxygen diffuse through the material, dissolved species are produced, which generate osmotic pressure that deforms and debonds the coating.These mechanisms are experimentally well-supported; however, comprehensive macroscopic models capable of predicting the formation osmotic blisters, without extensive data-fitting, is scant. Here, we develop a general mathematical theory of blistering and apply it to the failure of anti-corrosion coatings on carbon steel. The model is able to predict the irreversible, nonlinear blister growth dynamics, which eventually reaches a stable state, ruptures, or undergoes runaway delamination, depending on the mechanical and adhesion properties of the coating. For runaway delamination, the theory predicts a critical delamination length, beyond which unstable corrosion-driven growth occurs. The model is able to fit multiple sets of blister growth data with no fitting parameters. Corrosion experiments are also performed to observe undercoat rusting on carbon steel, which yielded trends comparable with model predictions. Water-in-salt electrolytes (WiSEs) are a class of super-concentrated electrolytes that have shown much promise in replacing organic electrolytes in lithium-ion batteries. At the extremely high salt concentrations of WiSEs, ionic association is more complicated than the simple ion pair description. In fact, large branched clusters can be present in WiSEs, and past a critical salt concentration, an infinite percolating ionic network can form spontaneously. In this work, we simplify our recently developed thermodynamic model of reversible ionic aggregation and gelation, tailoring it specifically for WiSEs. Our simplified theory only has a handful of parameters, all of which can be readily determined from simulations. Our model is able to quantitatively reproduce the populations of ionic clusters of different sizes as a function of salt concentration, the critical salt concentration for ionic gelation, and the fraction of ions incorporated into the ionic gel, as observed from molecular simulations of three different lithium-based WiSEs. The extent of ionic association and gelation greatly affects the effective ionic strength of solution, the coordination environment of active cations that is known to govern the chemistry of the solid-electrolyte interface, and the thermodynamic activity of all species in the electrolyte., Comment: 55 pages, 14 figures

An object withdrawn from a liquid bath is coated with a thin layer of liquid. Along with the liquid, impurities such as particles present in the bath can be transferred to the withdrawn substrate. Entrained particles locally modify the thickness of the film, hence altering the quality and properties of the coating. In this study, we show that it is possible to entrain the liquid alone and avoid contamination of the substrate, at sufficiently low withdrawal velocity in diluted suspensions. Using a model system consisting of a plate exiting a liquid bath, we observe that particles can remain trapped in the meniscus which exerts a resistive capillary force to the entrainment. We characterize different entrainment regimes as the withdrawal velocity increases: from a pure liquid film, to a liquid film containing clusters of particles, and eventually individual particles. This capillary filtration is an effective barrier against the contamination of substrates withdrawn from a polluted bath and finds application against biocontamination.

The electrostatic screening of charge in one-dimensional confinement leads to long-range breakdown in electroneutrality within a nanopore. Through a series of continuum simulations, we demonstrate the principles of electroneutrality breakdown for electrolytes in one dimensional confinement. We show how interacting pores in a membrane can counteract the phenomenon of electroneutrality breakdown, eventually returning to electroneutrality. Emphasis is placed on applying simplifying formulas to reduce the multidimensional partial differential equations into a single ordinary differential equation for the electrostatic potential. Dielectric mismatch between the electrolyte and membrane, pore aspect ratio, and confinement dimensionality are studied independently, outlining the relevance of electroneutrality breakdown in nanoporous membranes for selective ion transport and separations.

In this letter, we describe the capillary sorting of particles by size based on dip coating. A substrate withdrawn from a liquid bath entrains a coating whose thickness depends on the withdrawal speed and the liquid properties. If the coating material contains particles, they will only be entrained when the viscous force pulling them with the substrate overcomes the opposing capillary force at the deformable meniscus. This force threshold occurs at different liquid thicknesses for particles of different sizes. Here, we show that this difference can be used to separate small particles from a mixed suspension through capillary filtration. In a bidisperse suspension, we observe three distinct filtration regimes. At low capillary numbers, Ca, no particles are entrained in the liquid coating. At high Ca, all particle sizes are entrained. For a range of capillary numbers between these two extremes, only the smallest particles are entrained while the larger ones remain in the reservoir. We explain how this technique can be applied to polydisperse suspension. We also provide an estimate of the range of capillary number to separate particles of given sizes. The combination of this technique with the scalability and robustness of dip coating makes it a promising candidate for high-throughput separation or purification of industrial and biomedical suspensions.

Ions in ionic liquids and concentrated electrolytes reside in a crowded, strongly-interacting environment, leading to the formation of discrete layers of charges at interfaces. Here, we propose a continuum theory that captures the transition from overscreening-- alternating layers of excess charge at low surface potential, to overcrowding-- the formation of dense layers of charge of the same sign at high surface potential. The model outputs slowly-decaying oscillations in the charge density with a wavelength of single ion diameters, as shown by analysis of the gradient expansion. The gradient expansion suggests a new structure for partial differential equations describing the electrostatic potential at charged interfaces. We find quantitative agreement between the theory and molecular simulations in the differential capacitance and concentration profiles.

Processes based on electrostatic projection are used extensively in industry, e.g. for mineral separations, electrophotography or manufacturing of coated abrasives, such as sandpaper. Despite decades of engineering practice, there are still unanswered questions. In this paper, we present a comprehensive experimental study of projection process of more than 1500 individual spherical alumina particles with a nominal size of 500 $\mu$m, captured by high-speed video imaging and digital image analysis. Based on flight trajectories of approximately 1100 projected particles, we determined the acquired charge and dynamics as a function of relative humidity (RH) and electric field intensity and compared the results with classical theories. For RH levels of 50\% and above, more than 85\% of disposed particles were projected, even when the electric field intensity was at its minimum level. This suggests that, beyond a critical value of electric field intensity, relative humidity plays a more critical role in the projection process. We also observed that the charging time is reduced dramatically for RH levels of 50\% and above, possibly due to the build-up of thin water films around the particles which can facilitate charge transfer. In contrast, projected particles at 30\% RH level exhibited an excessive amount of electric charge, between two to four times than that of saturation value, which might be attributed to triboelectric charging effects. Finally, the physics of electrostatic projection is compared and contrasted with those of induced-charge electrokinetic phenomena, which share similar field-square scaling, as the applied field acts on its own induced charge to cause particle motion.

Freezing in charged porous media can induce significant pressure and cause damage to tissues and functional materials. We formulate a thermodynamically consistent theory to model freezing phenomena inside charged heterogeneous porous space. Two regimes are distinguished: free ions in open pore space lead to negligible effects of freezing point depression and pressure. On the other hand, if nano-fluidic salt trapping happens, subsequent ice formation is suppressed due to the high concentration of ions in the electrolyte. In this case, our theory predicts that freezing starts at a significantly lower temperature compared to pure water. In 1D, as the temperature goes even lower, ice continuously grows, until the salt concentration reaches saturation, all ions precipitate to form salt crystals, and freezing completes. Enormous pressure can be generated if initial salt concentration is high before salt entrapment. We show modifications to the classical nucleation theory, due to the trapped salt ions. Interestingly, although the freezing process is enormously changed by trapped salts, our analysis shows that the Gibbs-Thompson equation on confined melting point shift is not affected by the presence of the electrolyte., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

We revisit the role of the local solvent structure on the activity coefficient of electrolytes with a general non-local dielectric function approach. We treat the concentrated electrolyte as a dielectric medium and suggest an interpolated formula for the dielectric response. The pure water limit is calibrated based on MD simulations and experimental data. Solving our model around a central ion, we find strong over-screening and oscillations in the potential, which are absent in the standard "primitive model" predictions. We obtain mathematically tractable closed-form expressions for the activity coefficients and show reasonable agreement with experimental data.

Capillary effects such as imbibition-drying cycles impact the mechanics of granular systems over time. A multiscale poromechanics framework was applied to cement paste, that is the most common building material, experiencing broad humidity variations over the lifetime of infrastructure. First, the liquid density distribution at intermediate to high relative humidities is obtained using a lattice gas density functional method together with a realistic nano-granular model of cement hydrates. The calculated adsorption/desorption isotherms and pore size distributions are discussed and compare well to nitrogen and water experiments. The standard method for pore size distribution determination from desorption data is evaluated. Then, the integration of the Korteweg liquid stress field around each cement hydrate particle provided the capillary forces at the nanoscale. The cement mesoscale structure was relaxed under the action of the capillary forces. Local irreversible deformations of the cement nano-grains assembly were identified due to liquid-solid interactions. The spatial correlations of the nonaffine displacements extend to a few tens of nm. Finally, the Love-Weber method provided the homogenized liquid stress at the micronscale. The homogenization length coincided with the spatial correlation length nonaffine displacements. Our results on the solid response to capillary stress field suggest that the micronscale texture is not affected by mild drying, while local irreversible deformations still occur. A remarkable variety of organisms and wet materials are able to endure temperatures far below the freezing point of bulk water. Cryo-tolerance in biology is usually attributed to "anti-freeze" proteins, and yet massive supercooling ($< -40^\circ$C) is also possible in porous media containing only simple aqueous electrolytes. For concrete pavements, the common wisdom is that freeze-thaw damage results from the expansion of water upon freezing, but this cannot explain the large pressures ($> 10$~MPa) required to damage concrete, the observed correlation between pavement damage and de-icing salts, or the damage of cement paste loaded with benzene (which contracts upon freezing). In this Letter, we propose a different mechanism -- nanofluidic salt trapping -- which can explain the observations, using simple mathematical models of dissolved ions confined to thin liquid films between growing ice and charged surfaces. Although trapped salt lowers the freezing point, ice nucleation in charged pores causes enormous disjoining pressures via the rejected ions, until their removal by precipitation or surface adsorption at a lower temperatures releases the pressure and allows complete freezing. The theory is able to predict the non-monotonic salt-concentration dependence of freeze-thaw damage in concreter and provides a general framework to understand the origins of cryo-tolerance., Comment: 5 figures

Ion transport in extremely narrow nanochannels has gained increasing interest in recent years due to its unique physical properties, and the technological advances that allow us to study them. It is tempting to approach this regime with the tools and knowledge developed for wider microfluidic devices and use continuum models like the Poisson-Nernst-Planck equation. However, it turns out that some of the most basic principles we take for granted in a large system, such as electroneutrality, can breakdown under extreme confinement. We show that in a truly one-dimensional system, interacting with three-dimensional electrostatic interactions, the screening length is exponentially large in ionic spacing, and can easily exceed the macroscopic length of a nanotube. Without screening, electroneutrality is broken, and ionic transport can behave in a completely different way. In this work, we build a theoretical framework for electroneutrality breakdown in a one-dimensional nanopore and show how it provides an elegant interpretation for the peculiar scaling observed in experimental measurements of ionic conductance in carbon nanotubes.

The standard model for diffuse charge phenomena in colloid science, electrokinetics and biology is the Poisson-Boltzmann mean-field theory, which breaks down for multivalent ions and large surface charge densities due to electrostatic correlations. In this paper, we formulate a predictive continuum theory of correlated electrolytes based on two extensions of the Bazant-Storey-Kornyshev (BSK) framework: (i) a physical boundary condition enforcing continuity of the Maxwell stress at a charged interface, which upholds the Contact Theorem for dilute primitive-model electrolytes, and (ii) scaling relationships for the correlation length, for a one-component plasma at a charged plane and around a cylinder, as well as a dilute z:1 electrolyte screening a planar surface. In these cases, the theory accurately reproduces Monte Carlo simulation results from weak to strong coupling, and extensions are possible for more complex models of electrolytes and ionic liquids.

This Article presents a nonequilibrium thermodynamic theory for the mean-field precipitation, aggregation and pattern formation of colloidal clusters. A variable gradient energy coefficient and the arrest of particle diffusion upon "jamming" of cluster aggregates in the spinodal region predicts observable gel patterns that, at high inter-cluster attraction, form system-spanning, out-of-equilibrium networks with glass-like, quasi-static structural relaxation. For reactive systems, we incorporate the free energy landscape of stable pre-nucleation clusters into the Allen-Cahn-Reaction equation. We show that pattern formation is dominantly controlled by the Damk\"ohler number and the stability of the clusters, which modifies the auto-catalytic rate of precipitation. As clusters individually become more stable, bulk phase separation is suppressed.

Continuum models of porous media use macroscopic parameters and state variables to capture essential features of pore-scale physics. We propose a macroscopic property "accessivity" ($\alpha$) to characterize the network connectivity of different sized pores in a porous medium, and macroscopic state descriptors "radius-resolved saturations" ($\psi_w(F),\psi_n(F)$) to characterize the distribution of fluid phases within. Small accessivity ($\alpha\to0$) implies serial connections between different sized pores, while large accessivity ($\alpha\to1$) corresponds to more parallel arrangements, as the classical capillary bundle model implicitly assumes. Based on these concepts, we develop a statistical theory for quasistatic immiscible drainage-imbibition in arbitrary cycles, and arrive at simple algebraic formulae for updating $\psi_n(F)$ that naturally capture capillary pressure hysteresis, with $\alpha$ controlling the amount of hysteresis. These concepts may be used to interpret hysteretic data, upscale pore-scale observations, and formulate new constitutive laws by providing a simple conceptual framework for quantifying connectivity effects, and may have broader utility in continuum modeling of transport, reactions, and phase transformations in porous media.

We propose a theoretical framework to calculate capillary stresses in complex mesoporous materials, such as moist sand, nanoporous hydrates, and drying colloidal films. Molecular simulations are mapped onto a phase-field model of the liquid-vapor mixture, whose inhomogeneous stress tensor is integrated over Voronoi polyhedra in order to calculate equal and opposite forces between each pair of neighboring grains. The method is illustrated by simulations of moisture-induced forces in small clusters and random packings of spherical grains using lattice-gas Density Functional Theory. For a nano-granular model of cement hydrates, this approach reproduces the hysteretic water sorption/desorption isotherms and predicts drying shrinkage strain isotherm in good agreement with experiments. We show that capillary stress is an effective mechanism for internal stress relaxation in colloidal random packings, which contributes to the extraordinary durability of cement paste., Comment: 4 figures

Vapor adsorption experiments are widely used to assess pore size distributions, but the large hysteresis sometimes observed between sorption and desorption isotherms remains difficult to interpret. Such hysteresis is influenced pore network connectivity, which has previously been modeled by percolation on infinite lattices. Our hypothesis is that percolation occurs instead through finite networks of micropores connecting accessible macropores, always exposed to the outside environment. We derive a general formula for sorption/desorption isotherms that introduces a simple measure of hierarchical pore connectivity -- the fraction $f$ of always exposed pores. The model thus accounts for "small world" connections in finite-size percolation, while also incorporating other hysteresis mechanisms, in single-pore filling, liquid insertion into the solid matrix, and cavitation. Our formula is able to fit and interpret both primary and scanning sorption/desorption isotherms for a variety of adsorbates (noble gases, water, and organics) and porous materials (cement pastes, dental enamels, porous glasses, carbon black and nanotubes), including cases with broad pore-size distributions and large hysteresis. It allows quantification of the prevalence of percolating macropores in the material, even though these pores are never filled during the sorption experiments. The development of energy and infrastructure efficient water purification systems are among the most critical engineering challenges facing our society. Water purification is often a multi-step process involving filtration, desalination, and disinfection of a feedstream. Shock electrodialysis (shock ED) is a newly developed technique for water desalination, leveraging the formation of ion concentration polarization (ICP) zones and deionization shock waves in microscale pores near to an ion selective element. While shock ED has been demonstrated as an effective water desalination tool, we here present evidence of other simultaneous functionalities. We show that, unlike electrodialysis, shock ED can thoroughly filter micron-scale particles and aggregates of nanoparticles present in the feedwater. We also demonstrate that shock ED can enable disinfection of feedwaters, as approximately $99\%$ of viable bacteria (here \textit{E. coli}) in the inflow were killed or removed by our prototype. Shock ED also separates positive from negative particles, contrary to claims that ICP acts as a virtual barrier for all charged particles. By combining these functionalities (filtration, separation and disinfection) with deionization, shock ED has the potential to enable more compact and efficient water purification systems.

The conductivity of highly charged membranes is nearly constant, due to counter-ions screening pore surfaces. Weakly charged porous media, or "leaky membranes", also contain a significant concentration of co-ions, whose depletion at high current leads to ion concentration polarization and conductivity shock waves. To describe these nonlinear phenomena the absence of electro-osmotic flow, a simple Leaky Membrane Model is formulated, based on macroscopic electroneutrality and Nernst-Planck ionic fluxes. The model is solved in cases of unsupported binary electrolytes: steady conduction from a reservoir to a cation-selective surface, transient response to a current step, steady conduction to a flow-through porous electrode, and steady conduction between cation-selective surfaces in cross flow. The last problem is motivated by separations in leaky membranes, such as shock electrodialysis. The article begins with a tribute to Neal Amundson, whose pioneering work on shock waves in chromatography involved similar mathematics.

Motivated by the puzzle of sorption hysteresis in Portland cement concrete or cement paste, we develop in Part II of this study a general theory of vapor sorption and desorption from nanoporous solids, which attributes hysteresis to hindered molecular condensation with attractive lateral interactions. The classical mean-field theory of van der Waals is applied to predict the dependence of hysteresis on temperature and pore size, using the regular solution model and gradient energy of Cahn and Hilliard. A simple "hierarchical wetting" model for thin nanopores is developed to describe the case of strong wetting by the first monolayer, followed by condensation of nanodroplets and nanobubbles in the bulk. The model predicts a larger hysteresis critical temperature and enhanced hysteresis for molecular condensation across nanopores at high vapor pressure than within monolayers at low vapor pressure. For heterogeneous pores, the theory predicts sorption/desorption sequences similar to those seen in molecular dynamics simulations, where the interfacial energy (or gradient penalty) at nanopore junctions acts as a free energy barrier for snap-through instabilities. The model helps to quantitatively understand recent experimental data for concrete or cement paste wetting and drying cycles and suggests new experiments at different temperatures and humidity sweep rates., Comment: 26 pages, 10 figs

A theoretical investigation of the effects of elastic coherency on the thermodynamics, kinetics, and morphology of intercalation in single LiFePO4 nanoparticles yields new insights into this important battery material. Anisotropic elastic stiffness and misfit strains lead to the unexpected prediction that low-energy phase boundaries occur along {101} planes, while conflicting reports of phase boundary orientations are resolved by a partial loss of coherency in the {100} direction. Elastic relaxation near surfaces leads to the formation of a striped morphology, whose characteristic length scale is predicted by the model and yields an estimate of the interfacial energy. The effects of coherency strain on solubility and galvanostatic discharge are studied with a reaction-limited phase-field model, which quantitatively captures the influence of misfit strain, particle size, and temperature on solubility seen in experiments. Coherency strain strongly suppresses phase separation during discharge, which enhances rate capability and extends cycle life. The effects of elevated temperature and the feasibility of nucleation are considered in the context of multi-particle cathodes.

The sorption-desorption hysteresis observed in many nanoporous solids, at vapor pressures low enough for the the liquid (capillary) phase of the adsorbate to be absent, has long been vaguely attributed to changes in the nanopore structure, but no mathematically consistent explanation has been presented. The present work takes an analytical approach to account for discrete molecular forces in the nanopore fluid and proposes two related mechanisms that can explain the hysteresis at low vapor pressure without assuming any change in the nanopore structure. The first mechanism, presented in Part I, consists of a series of snap-through instabilities during the filling or emptying of non-uniform nanopores or nanoscale asperities. The instabilities are caused by non-uniqueness in the misfit disjoining pressures engendered by a difference between the nanopore width and an integer multiple of the thickness of a monomolecular adsorption layer. The second mechanism, presented in Part II, consists of molecular coalescence within a partially filled surface, nanopore or nanopore network. This general thermodynamic instability is driven by attractive intermolecular forces within the adsorbate and forms the basis to develop a unified theory of both mechanisms. The behavior of a conductive membrane in a static (DC) electric field is investigated theoretically. An effective zero-thickness model is constructed based on a Robin-type boundary condition for the electric potential at the membrane, originally developed for electrochemical systems. Within such a framework, corrections to the elastic moduli of the membrane are obtained, which arise from charge accumulation in the Debye layers due to capacitive effects and electric currents through the membrane and can lead to an undulation instability of the membrane. The fluid flow surrounding the membrane is also calculated, which clarifies issues regarding these flows sharing many similarities with flows produced by induced charge electro-osmosis (ICEO). Non-equilibrium steady states of the membrane and of the fluid can be effectively described by this method. It is both simpler, due to the zero thickness approximation which is widely used in the literature on fluid membranes, and more general than previous approaches. In spite of many attempts to model dense granular flow, there is still no general theory capable of describing different types of flows, such as gravity-driven drainage in silos and wall-driven shear flows in Couette cells. Here, we summarize our recent proposal of the Stochastic Flow Rule (SFR), which is able to describe these cases in good agreement with experiments, and we focus on testing the theory in more detail against brute-force simulations with the discrete-element method (DEM). The SFR is a general rate-independent constitutive law for plastic flow, based on diffusing spots of fluidization. In the case of quasi-2D granular materials, we assume limit-state stresses from Mohr-Coulomb plasticity and postulate that spots undergo biased random walks along slip-lines, driven by local stress imbalances. We compare analytical predictions of the SFR against DEM simulations for silos and Couette cells, carrying out several parametric studies in the latter case, and find good agreement.

There have been many attempts to derive continuum models for dense granular flow, but a general theory is still lacking. Here, we start with Mohr-Coulomb plasticity for quasi-2D granular materials to calculate (average) stresses and slip planes, but we propose a "stochastic flow rule" (SFR) to replace the principle of coaxiality in classical plasticity. The SFR takes into account two crucial features of granular materials - discreteness and randomness - via diffusing "spots" of local fluidization, which act as carriers of plasticity. We postulate that spots perform random walks biased along slip-lines with a drift direction determined by the stress imbalance upon a local switch from static to dynamic friction. In the continuum limit (based on a Fokker-Planck equation for the spot concentration), this simple model is able to predict a variety of granular flow profiles in flat-bottom silos, annular Couette cells, flowing heaps, and plate-dragging experiments -- with essentially no fitting parameters -- although it is only expected to function where material is at incipient failure and slip-lines are inadmissible. For special cases of admissible slip-lines, such as plate dragging under a heavy load or flow down an inclined plane, we postulate a transition to rate-dependent Bagnold rheology, where flow occurs by sliding shear planes. With different yield criteria, the SFR provides a general framework for multiscale modeling of plasticity in amorphous materials, cycling between continuum limit-state stress calculations, meso-scale spot random walks, and microscopic particle relaxation.

Pebble-bed nuclear reactor technology, which is currently being revived around the world, raises fundamental questions about dense granular flow in silos. A typical reactor core is composed of graphite fuel pebbles, which drain very slowly in a continuous refueling process. Pebble flow is poorly understood and not easily accessible to experiments, and yet it has a major impact on reactor physics. To address this problem, we perform full-scale, discrete-element simulations in realistic geometries, with up to 440,000 frictional, viscoelastic 6cm-diameter spheres draining in a cylindrical vessel of diameter 3.5m and height 10m with bottom funnels angled at 30 degrees or 60 degrees. We also simulate a bidisperse core with a dynamic central column of smaller graphite moderator pebbles and show that little mixing occurs down to a 1:2 diameter ratio. We analyze the mean velocity, diffusion and mixing, local ordering and porosity (from Voronoi volumes), the residence-time distribution, and the effects of wall friction and discuss implications for reactor design and the basic physics of granular flow., Comment: 18 pages, 21 figures

We present a multiscale simulation algorithm for amorphous materials, which we illustrate and validate in a canonical case of dense granular flow. Our algorithm is based on the recently proposed Spot Model, where particles in a dense random packing undergo chain-like collective displacements in response to diffusing "spots" of influence, carrying a slight excess of interstitial free volume. We reconstruct the microscopic dynamics of particles from the "coarse grained" dynamics of spots by introducing a localized particle relaxation step after each spot-induced block displacement, simply to enforce packing constraints with a (fairly arbitrary) soft-core repulsion. To test the model, we study to what extent it can describe the dynamics of up to 135,000 frictional, viscoelastic spheres in granular drainage simulated by the discrete-element method (DEM). With only five fitting parameters (the radius, volume, diffusivity, drift velocity, and injection rate of spots), we find that the spot simulations are able to largely reproduce not only the mean flow and diffusion, but also some subtle statistics of the flowing packings, such as spatial velocity correlations and many-body structural correlations. The spot simulations run over 100 times faster than DEM and demonstrate the possibility of multiscale modeling for amorphous materials, whenever a suitable model can be devised for the coarse-grained spot dynamics., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

We study the relation between stochastic and continuous transport-limited growth models, which generalize conformal-mapping formulations of diffusion-limited aggregation (DLA) and viscous fingering, respectively. We derive a nonlinear integro-differential equation for the asymptotic shape (average conformal map) of stochastic aggregates, whose mean-field approximation is the corresponding continuous equation, where the interface moves at its local expected velocity. Our equation accurately describes advection-diffusion-limited aggregation (ADLA), and, due to nonlinear averaging over fluctuations, the average ADLA cluster is similar, but not identical, to an exact solution of the mean-field dynamics. Similar results should apply to all models in our class, thus explaining the known discrepancies between average DLA clusters and viscous fingers in a channel geometry.

We measure the flow of granular materials inside a quasi-two dimensional silo as it drains and compare the data with some existing models. The particles inside the silo are imaged and tracked with unprecedented resolution in both space and time to obtain their velocity and diffusion properties. The data obtained by varying the orifice width and the hopper angle allows us to thoroughly test models of gravity driven flows inside these geometries. All of our measured velocity profiles are smooth and free of the shock-like discontinuities ("rupture zones") predicted by critical state soil mechanics. On the other hand, we find that the simple Kinematic Model accurately captures the mean velocity profile near the orifice, although it fails to describe the rapid transition to plug flow far away from the orifice. The measured diffusion length $b$, the only free parameter in the model, is not constant as usually assumed, but increases with both the height above the orifice and the angle of the hopper. We discuss improvements to the model to account for the differences. From our data, we also directly measure the diffusion of the particles and find it to be significantly less than predicted by the Void Model, which provides the classical microscopic derivation of the Kinematic Model in terms of diffusing voids in the packing. However, the experimental data is consistent with the recently proposed Spot Model, based on a simple mechanism for cooperative diffusion. Finally, we discuss the flow rate as a function of the orifice width and hopper angles. We find that the flow rate scales with the orifice size to the power of 1.5, consistent with dimensional analysis. The diffusion and flow of amorphous materials, such as glasses and granular materials, has resisted a simple microscopic description, analogous to defect theories for crystals. Early models were based on either gas-like inelastic collisions or crystal-like vacancy diffusion, but here we propose a cooperative mechanism for dense random-packing dynamics, based on diffusing ``spots'' of interstitial free volume. Simulations with the Spot Model can efficiently generate realistic flowing packings, and yet the model is simple enough for mathematical analysis. Starting from a non-local stochastic differential equation, we derive continuum equations for tracer diffusion, given the dynamics of free volume (spots). Throughout the paper, we apply the model to granular drainage in a silo, and we also briefly discuss glassy relaxation. The article provides a pedagogical review aimed at graduate students in materials science, physics, and applied mathematics, focusing on recent developments in the subject. Following a brief summary of concepts from complex analysis, the article begins with an overview of continuous conformal-map dynamics. This includes problems of interfacial motion driven by harmonic fields (such as viscous fingering and void electromigration), bi-harmonic fields (such as viscous sintering and elastic pore evolution), and non-harmonic, conformally invariant fields (such as growth by advection-diffusion and electro-deposition). The second part of the article is devoted to iterated conformal maps for analogous problems in stochastic interfacial dynamics (such as diffusion-limited aggregation, dielectric breakdown, brittle fracture, and advection-diffusion-limited aggregation). The third part notes that all of these models can be extended to curved surfaces by an auxilliary conformal mapping from the complex plane, such as stereographic projection to a sphere. We perform an exhaustive study of the simplest, nontrivial problem in advection-diffusion -- a finite absorber of arbitrary cross section in a steady two-dimensional potential flow of concentrated fluid. This classical problem has been studied extensively in the theory of solidification from a flowing melt, and it also arises in Advection-Diffusion-Limited Aggregation. In both cases, the fundamental object is the flux to a circular disk, obtained by conformal mapping from more complicated shapes. We construct the first accurate numerical solution using an efficient new method, which involves mapping to the interior of the disk and using a spectral method in polar coordinates. Our method also combines exact asymptotics and an adaptive mesh to handle boundary layers. Starting from a well-known integral equation in streamline coordinates, we also derive new, high-order asymptotic expansions for high and low P\'eclet numbers ($\Pe$). Remarkably, the `high' $\Pe$ expansion remains accurate even for such low $\Pe$ as $10^{-3}$. The two expansions overlap well near $\Pe = 0.1$, allowing the construction of an analytical connection formula that is uniformly accurate for all $\Pe$ and angles on the disk with a maximum relative error of 1.75%. We also obtain an analytical formula for the Nusselt number ($\Nu$) as a function of the P\'eclet number with a maximum relative error of 0.53% for all possible geometries. Because our finite-plate problem can be conformally mapped to other geometries, the general problem of two-dimensional advection-diffusion past an arbitrary finite absorber in a potential flow can be considered effectively solved., Comment: 29 pages, 12 figs (mostly in color)

The response of a model micro-electrochemical system to a time-dependent applied voltage is analyzed. The article begins with a fresh historical review including electrochemistry, colloidal science, and microfluidics. The model problem consists of a symmetric binary electrolyte between parallel-plate, blocking electrodes which suddenly apply a voltage. Compact Stern layers on the electrodes are also taken into account. The Nernst-Planck-Poisson equations are first linearized and solved by Laplace transforms for small voltages, and numerical solutions are obtained for large voltages. The ``weakly nonlinear'' limit of thin double layers is then analyzed by matched asymptotic expansions in the small parameter $\epsilon = \lambda_D/L$, where $\lambda_D$ is the screening length and $L$ the electrode separation. At leading order, the system initially behaves like an RC circuit with a response time of $\lambda_D L / D$ (not $\lambda_D^2/D$), where $D$ is the ionic diffusivity, but nonlinearity violates this common picture and introduce multiple time scales. The charging process slows down, and neutral-salt adsorption by the diffuse part of the double layer couples to bulk diffusion at the time scale, $L^2/D$. In the ``strongly nonlinear'' regime (controlled by a dimensionless parameter resembling the Dukhin number), this effect produces bulk concentration gradients, and, at very large voltages, transient space charge. We study the transport properties of particles draining from a silo using imaging and direct particle tracking. The particle displacements show a universal transition from super-diffusion to normal diffusion, as a function of the distance fallen, independent of the flow speed. In the super-diffusive (but sub-ballistic) regime, which occurs before a particle falls through its diameter, the displacements have fat-tailed and anisotropic distributions. In the diffusive regime, we observe very slow cage breaking and Peclet numbers of order 100, contrary to the only previous microscopic model (based on diffusing voids). Overall, our experiments show that diffusion and mixing are dominated by geometry, consistent with fluctuating contact networks but not thermal collisions, as in normal fluids.

We describe the general phenomenon of `induced-charge electro-osmosis' (ICEO) -- the nonlinear electro-osmotic slip that occurs when an applied field acts on the ionic charge it {\sl induces} around a polarizable surface. Motivated by a simple physical picture, we calculate ICEO flows around conducting cylinders in steady (DC), oscillatory (AC), and suddenly-applied electric fields. This picture, and these systems, represent perhaps the clearest example of nonlinear electrokinetic phenomena. We complement and verify this physically-motivated approach using a matched asymptotic expansion to the electrokinetic equations in the thin double-layer and low potential limits. ICEO slip velocities vary like $u_s \propto E_0^2 L$, where $E_0$ is the field strength and $L$ is a geometric length scale, and are set up on a time scale $\tau_c = \lambda_D L/D$, where $\lambda_D$ is the screening length and $D$ is the ionic diffusion constant. We propose and analyze ICEO microfluidic pumps and mixers that operate without moving parts under low applied potentials. Similar flows around metallic colloids with fixed total charge have been described in the Russian literature (largely unnoticed in the West). Time-dependent conformal maps are used to model a class of growth phenomena limited by coupled non-Laplacian transport processes, such as nonlinear diffusion, advection, and electro-migration. Both continuous and stochastic dynamics are described by generalizing conformal-mapping techniques for viscous fingering and diffusion-limited aggregation, respectively. A general notion of time in stochastic growth is also introduced. The theory is applied to simulations of advection-diffusion-limited aggregation in a background potential flow. A universal crossover in morphology is observed from diffusion-limited to advection-limited fractal patterns with an associated crossover in the growth rate, controlled by a time-dependent effective Peclet number. Remarkably, the fractal dimension is not affected by advection, in spite of dramatic increases in anisotropy and growth rate, due to the persistence of diffusion limitation at small scales., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures (six color plates)
