Tunability of interfacial effects between two-dimensional (2D) crystals is crucial not only for understanding the intrinsic properties of each system, but also for designing electronic devices based on ultra-thin heterostructures. A prerequisite of such heterostructure engineering is the availability of 2D crystals with different degrees of interfacial interactions. In this work, we report a controlled epitaxial growth of monolayer TaSe2 with different structural phases, 1H and 1T, on a bilayer graphene (BLG) substrate using molecular beam epitaxy, and its impact on the electronic properties of the heterostructures using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. 1H-TaSe2 exhibits significant charge transfer and band hybridization at the interface, whereas 1T-TaSe2 shows weak interactions with the substrate. The distinct interfacial interactions are attributed to the dual effects from the differences of the work functions as well as the relative interlayer distance between TaSe2 films and BLG substrate. The method demonstrated here provides a viable route towards interface engineering in a variety of transition-metal dichalcogenides that can be applied to future nano-devices with designed electronic properties., Comment: 23 pages, 4 figures

When electron-electron interaction dominates over other electronic energy scales, exotic, collective phenomena often emerge out of seemingly ordinary matter. The strongly correlated phenomena, such as quantum spin liquid and unconventional superconductivity, represent a major research frontier and a constant source of inspiration. Central to strongly correlated physics is the concept of Mott insulator, from which various other correlated phases derive. The advent of two-dimensional (2D) materials brings unprecedented opportunities to the study of strongly correlated physics in the 2D limit. In particular, the enhanced correlation and extreme tunability of 2D materials enables exploring strongly correlated systems across uncharted parameter space. Here, we discover an intriguing metal to Mott insulator transition in 1T-TaSe$_2$ as the material is thinned down to atomic thicknesses. Specifically, we discover, for the first time, that the bulk metallicity of 1T-TaSe$_2$ arises from a band crossing Fermi level. Reducing the dimensionality effectively quenches the kinetic energy of the initially itinerant electrons and drives the material into a Mott insulating state. The dimensionality-driven Metal to Mott insulator transition resolves the long-standing dichotomy between metallic bulk and insulating surface of 1T-TaSe$_2$. Our results additionally establish 1T-TaSe$_2$ as an ideal variable system for exploring various strongly correlated phenomena.

The spontaneous formation of electronic orders is a crucial element for understanding complex quantum states and engineering heterostructures in two-dimensional materials. We report a novel $\sqrt{19}\times\sqrt{19}$ charge order in few-layer thick 1T-TaTe$_2$ transition metal dichalcogenide films grown by molecular beam epitaxy, which has not been realized. Our photoemission and scanning probe measurements demonstrate that monolayer 1T-TaTe$_2$ exhibits a variety of metastable charge density wave orders, including the $\sqrt{19}\times\sqrt{19}$ superstructure, which can be selectively stabilized by controlling the post-growth annealing temperature. Moreover, we find that only the $\sqrt{19}\times\sqrt{19}$ order persists in 1T-TaTe$_2$ films thicker than a monolayer, up to 8 layers. Our findings identify the previously unrealized novel electronic order in a much-studied transition metal dichalcogenide and provide a viable route to control it within the epitaxial growth process.

The interplay between electron-electron interactions and structural ordering can yield exceptionally rich correlated electronic phases. We have used scanning tunneling microscopy to investigate bulk 1T-TaSe2 and have uncovered surprisingly diverse correlated surface states thereof. These surface states exhibit the same in-plane charge density wave ordering but dramatically different electronic ground states ranging from insulating to metallic. The insulating variety of surface state shows signatures of a decoupled surface Mott layer. The metallic surface states, on the other hand, exhibit zero-bias peaks of varying strength that suggest Kondo phases arising from coupling between the Mott surface layer and the metallic bulk of 1T-TaSe2. The surface of bulk 1T-TaSe2 thus constitutes a rare realization of the periodic Anderson model covering a wide parameter regime, thereby providing a model system for accessing different correlated phenomena in the same crystal. Our results highlight the central role played by strong correlations in this material family.

Quantum spin liquids (QSLs) are highly entangled, disordered magnetic states that arise in frustrated Mott insulators and host exotic fractional excitations such as spinons and chargons. Despite being charge insulators some QSLs are predicted to exhibit gapless itinerant spinons that yield metallic behavior in the spin channel. We have deposited isolated magnetic atoms onto single-layer (SL) 1T-TaSe$_2$, a gapless QSL candidate, to experimentally probe how itinerant spinons couple to impurity spin centers. Using scanning tunneling spectroscopy we observe the emergence of new, impurity-induced resonance peaks at the 1T-TaSe$_2$ Hubbard band edges when cobalt adatoms are positioned to have maximal spatial overlap with the Hubbard band charge distribution. These resonance peaks disappear when the spatial overlap is reduced or when the magnetic impurities are replaced with non-magnetic impurities. Theoretical simulations using a modified Anderson impurity model integrated with a gapless quantum spin liquid show that these resonance peaks are consistent with a Kondo resonance induced by spinons combined with spinon-chargon binding effects that arise due to QSL gauge-field fluctuations.

Mott insulating behavior is induced by strong electron correlation and can lead to exotic states of matter such as unconventional superconductivity and quantum spin liquids. Recent advances in van der Waals material synthesis enable the exploration of novel Mott systems in the two-dimensional limit. Here we report characterization of the local electronic properties of single- and few-layer 1T-TaSe2 via spatial- and momentum-resolved spectroscopy involving scanning tunneling microscopy and angle-resolved photoemission. Our combined experimental and theoretical study indicates that electron correlation induces a robust Mott insulator state in single-layer 1T-TaSe2 that is accompanied by novel orbital texture. Inclusion of interlayer coupling weakens the insulating phase in 1T-TaSe2, as seen by strong reduction of its energy gap and quenching of its correlation-driven orbital texture in bilayer and trilayer 1T-TaSe2. Our results establish single-layer 1T-TaSe2 as a useful new platform for investigating strong correlation physics in two dimensions.

We report transport studies of Mn-doped Bi2Te3 topological insulator (TI) films with accurately controlled thickness grown by molecular beam epitaxy. We find that films thicker than 5 quintuple-layer (QL) exhibit the usual anomalous Hall effect for magnetic TIs. When the thickness is reduced to 4 QL, however, characteristic features associated with the topological Hall effect (THE) emerge. More surprisingly, the THE vanishes again when the film thickness is further reduced to 3 QL. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that the coupling between the top and bottom surface states at the dimensional crossover regime stabilizes the magnetic skyrmion structure that is responsible for the THE., Comment: 4 figures, with supplementary materials, to appear in Phys. The vicinity of a Mott insulating phase has constantly been a fertile ground for finding exotic quantum states, most notably the high Tc cuprates and colossal magnetoresistance manganites. The layered transition metal dichalcogenide 1T-TaS2 represents another intriguing example, in which the Mott insulator phase is intimately entangled with a series of complex charge-density-wave (CDW) orders. More interestingly, it has been recently found that 1T-TaS2 undergoes a Mott-insulator-to-superconductor transition induced by high pressure, charge doping, or isovalent substitution. The nature of the Mott insulator phase and transition mechanism to the conducting state is still under heated debate. Here, by combining scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) measurements and first-principles calculations, we investigate the atomic scale electronic structure of 1T-TaS2 Mott insulator and its evolution to the metallic state upon isovalent substitution of S with Se. We identify two distinct types of orbital textures - one localized and the other extended - and demonstrates that the interplay between them is the key factor that determines the electronic structure. Especially, we show that the continuous evolution of the charge gap visualized by STM is due to the immersion of the localized-orbital-induced Hubbard bands into the extended-orbital-spanned Fermi sea, featuring a unique evolution from a Mott gap to a charge-transfer gap. This new mechanism of orbital-driven Mottness collapse revealed here suggests an interesting route for creating novel electronic state and designing future electronic devices., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

Layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are ideal systems for exploring the effects of dimensionality on correlated electronic phases such as charge density wave (CDW) order and superconductivity. In bulk NbSe2 a CDW sets in at TCDW = 33 K and superconductivity sets in at Tc = 7.2 K. Below Tc these electronic states coexist but their microscopic formation mechanisms remain controversial. Here we present an electronic characterization study of a single 2D layer of NbSe2 by means of low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS), angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), and electrical transport measurements. We demonstrate that 3x3 CDW order in NbSe2 remains intact in 2D. Superconductivity also still remains in the 2D limit, but its onset temperature is depressed to 1.9 K. Our STS measurements at 5 K reveal a CDW gap of {\Delta} = 4 meV at the Fermi energy, which is accessible via STS due to the removal of bands crossing the Fermi level for a single layer. Our observations are consistent with the simplified (compared to bulk) electronic structure of single-layer NbSe2, thus providing new insight into CDW formation and superconductivity in this model strongly-correlated system., Comment: Nature Physics (2015), DOI:10.1038/nphys3527

The IrTe2 transition metal dichalcogenide undergoes a series of structural and electronic phase transitions when doped with Pt. The nature of each phase and the mechanism of the phase transitions have attracted much attention. In this paper, we report scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy studies of Pt doped IrTe2 with varied Pt contents. In pure IrTe2, we find that the ground state has a 1/6 superstructure, and the electronic structure is inconsistent with Fermi surface nesting induced charge density wave order. Upon Pt doping, the crystal structure changes to a 1/5 superstructure and then to a quasi-periodic hexagonal phase. First principles calculations show that the superstructures and electronic structures are determined by the global chemical strain and local impurity states that can be tuned systematically by Pt doping., Comment: 6 figures

We use scanning tunneling microscopy to investigate the (001) surface of cleaved SmB6 Kondo insulator. Variable temperature dI/dV spectroscopy up to 60 K reveals a gap-like density of state suppression around the Fermi level, which is due to the hybridization between the itinerant Sm 5d band and localized Sm 4f band. At temperatures below 40 K, a sharp coherence peak emerges within the hybridization gap near the lower gap edge. We propose that the in-gap resonance state is due to a collective excitation in magnetic origin with the presence of spin-orbital coupling and mixed valence fluctuations. Although the origin of high temperature superconductivity in the iron pnictides is still under debate, it is widely believed that magnetic interactions or fluctuations play an important role in triggering Cooper pairing. Because of the relevance of magnetism to pairing, the question of whether long range spin magnetic order can coexist with superconductivity microscopically has attracted strong interests. The available experimental methods used to answer this question are either bulk probes or local ones without control of probing position, thus the answers range from mutual exclusion to homogeneous coexistence. To definitively answer this question, here we use scanning tunneling microscopy to investigate the local electronic structure of an underdoped NaFe1-xCoxAs near the spin density wave (SDW) and superconducting (SC) phase boundary. Spatially resolved spectroscopy directly reveal both the SDW and SC gap features at the same atomic location, providing compelling evidence for the microscopic coexistence of the two phases. The strengths of the SDW and SC features are shown to anti correlate with each other, indicating the competition of the two orders. The microscopic coexistence clearly indicates that Cooper pairing occurs when portions of the Fermi surface (FS) are already gapped by the SDW order. The regime TC < T < TSDW thus show a strong resemblance to the pseudogap phase of the cuprates where growing experimental evidences suggest a FS reconstruction due to certain density wave order. In this phase of the pnictides, the residual FS has a favorable topology for magnetically mediated pairing when the ordering moment of the SDW is small., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures

Similar to the cuprate high TC superconductors, the iron pnictide superconductors also lie in close proximity to a magnetically ordered phase. A central debate concerning the superconducting mechanism is whether the local magnetic moments play an indispensable role or the itinerant electron description is sufficient. A key step for resolving this issue is to acquire a comprehensive picture regarding the nature of various phases and interactions in the iron compounds. Here we report the doping, temperature, and spatial evolutions of the electronic structure of NaFe1-xCoxAs studied by scanning tunneling microscopy. The spin density wave gap in the parent state is observed for the first time, which shows a strongly asymmetric lineshape that is incompatible with the conventional Fermi surface nesting scenario. The optimally doped sample exhibits a single, symmetric energy gap, but in the overdoped regime another asymmetric gap-like feature emerges near the Fermi level. This novel gap-like phase coexists with superconductivity in the ground state, persists deep into the normal state, and shows strong spatial variations. The characteristics of the three distinct low energy states, in conjunction with the peculiar high energy spectra, suggest that the coupling between the local moments and itinerant electrons is the fundamental driving force for the phases and phase transitions in the iron pnictides., Comment: 4 figures + supplementary information

We report scanning tunneling microscopy studies of the local structural and electronic properties of the iron selenide superconductor K0.73Fe1.67Se2 with TC = 32K. On the atomically resolved FeSe surface, we observe well-defined superconducting gap and the microscopic coexistence of a charge density modulation with root2*root2 periodicity with respect to the original Se lattice. We propose that a possible origin of the pattern is the electronic superstructure caused by the block antiferromagnetic ordering of the iron moments. The widely expected iron vacancy ordering is not observed, indicating that it is not a necessary ingredient for superconductivity in the intercalated iron selenides., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures

We report a transport study of ultrathin Bi2Se3 topological insulators with thickness from one quintuple layer to six quintuple layers grown by molecular beam epitaxy. At low temperatures, the film resistance increases logarithmically with decreasing temperature, revealing an insulating ground state. The sharp increase of resistance with magnetic field, however, indicates the existence of weak antilocalization, which should reduce the resistance as temperature decreases. We show that these apparently contradictory behaviors can be understood by considering the electron interaction effect, which plays a crucial role in determining the electronic ground state of topological insulators in the two dimensional limit., Comment: 4 figures
