The foundation of continuum elasticity theory is based on two general principles: (i) the force felt by a small volume element from its surrounding acts only through its surface (the Cauchy principle, justified by the fact that interactions are of short range and are therefore localized at the boundary); (ii) the stress tensor must be symmetric in order to prevent spontaneous rotation of the material points. These two requirements are presented to be necessary in classical textbooks on elasticity theory. By using only basic spatial symmetries it is shown that elastodynamics equations can be derived, for high symmetry crystals (the typical case considered in most textbooks), without evoking any of the two above physical principles., Comment: 6 pages

We study the step bunching process in three different 1D step flow models and obtain scaling relations for the step bunches formed in the long times limit. The first one was introduced by S.Stoyanov [Jap. J.Appl. Phys. 29, (1990) L659] as the simplest 'realistic' model of step bunching due to drift of the adatoms. Here we show that it could lead to (at least) two different types of step bunching, depending on the magnitude of the drift. Starting from known kinematic picture for plasticity, we derive a set of dynamical equations describing plastic flow in a Lagrangian formulation. Our derivation is a natural and a straightforward extension of simple fluids, elastic and viscous solids theories. These equations contain the Maxwell model as a special limit. We discuss some results of plasticity which can be described by this set of equations. We exploit the model equations for the simple examples: straining of a slab and a rod. We find that necking manifests always itself (not as a result of instability), except if the very special constant-velocity stretching process is imposed., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure

We present rheology experiments on dilute solutions of vesicles and red blood cells (RBC). Varying the viscosity ratio $\lambda$ between internal and external fluids, the microscopic dynamics of suspended objects can be qualitatively changed from tank-treading ($tt$) to tumbling ($tb$). We find that in the tt regime the viscosity $\eta$, decreases when $\lambda$ increases, in contrast with droplet emulsions and elastic capsule theories which are sometimes invoked to model RBC dynamics. At a critical $\lambda$ (close to the tt-tb transition) $\eta$ exhibits a minimum before it increases in the tb regime. This is consistent with a recent theory for vesicles. This points to the nontrivial fact that the cytoskeleton in RBC does not alter the qualitative evolution of $\eta$ and that, as far as rheology is concerned, vesicle models might be a better description., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Dynamics of a one-dimensional growing front with an unstable straight profile are analyzed. We argue that a coarsening process occurs if and only if the period \lambda of the steady state solution is an increasing function of its amplitude A. This statement is rigorously proved for two important classes of conserved and nonconserved models by investigating the phase diffusion equation of the steady pattern. A phase-field approach describing the dynamics of a strained solid in contact with its melt is developed. By rigorous asymptotic analysis we show that the sharp-interface limit of this model recovers the continuum model equations for the Grinfeld instability. Moreover, we use our approach to derive hitherto unknown sharp-interface equations for a situation including a field of body forces. The numerical utility of the phase-field approach is demonstrated by comparison with a sharp-interface simulation. We then investigate the dynamics of extended systems within the phase-field model which contains an inherent lower length cutoff, thus avoiding cusp singularities. It is found that a periodic array of grooves generically evolves into a superstructure which arises from a series of imperfect period doublings. For wavenumbers close to the fastest-growing mode of the linear instability, the first period doubling can be obtained analytically. Both the dynamics of an initially periodic array and a random initial structure can be described as a coarsening process with winning grooves temporarily accelerating whereas losing ones decelerate and even reverse their direction of motion., Comment: 40 pages, 12 figures, submitted to Phys. We study the relaxation to equilibrium of two dimensional islands containing up to 20000 atoms by Kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. We find that the commonly assumed relaxation mechanism - curvature-driven relaxation via atom diffusion - cannot explain the results obtained at low temperatures, where the island edges consist in large facets. Specifically, our simulations show that the exponent characterizing the dependence of the equilibration time on the island size is different at high and low temperatures, in contradiction with the above cited assumptions. Instead, we propose that - at low temperatures - the relaxation is limited by the nucleation of new atomic rows on the large facets : this allows us to explain both the activation energy and the island size dependence of the equilibration time., Comment: 9 pages, revtex

Directional solidification of lamellar eutectic structures submitted to uniaxial stress is investigated. In the spirit of an approximation first used by Jackson and Hunt, we calculate the stress tensor for a two-dimensional crystal with triangular surface, using a Fourier expansion of the Airy function. crystal with triangular surface in contact with its melt, given that a uniaxial external stress is applied. The effect of the resulting change in chemical potential is introduced into the standard model for directional solidification of a lamellar eutectic. This calculation is motivated by an observation, made recently [I. Cantat, K. Kassner, C. Misbah, and H. M\"uller-Krumbhaar, Phys. Rev. E, in press] that the thermal gradient produces similar effects as a strong gravitational field in the case of dilute-alloy solidification. Therefore, the coupling between the Grinfeld and the Mullins-Sekerka instabilities becomes strong, as the critical wavelength of the former instability gets reduced to a value close to that of the latter. Analogously, in the case of eutectics, the characteristic length scale of the Grinfeld instability should be reduced to a size not extremely far from typical lamellar spacings. In a Jackson-Hunt like approach we average the undercooling, including the stress term, over a pair of lamellae. Following Jackson and Hunt, we assume the selected wavelength to be determined by the minimum undercooling criterion and compute its shift due to the external stress. we realize the shifting of the wavelength by the application of external stress. In addition, we find that in general the volume fraction of the two solid phases is changed by uniaxial stress.
