Molecular dynamics simulations are used to demonstrate that a binary solvent can be used to stratify colloidal mixtures when the suspension is rapidly dried. The solvent consists of two components, one more volatile than the other. When evaporated at high rates, the more volatile component becomes depleted near the evaporation front and develops a negative concentration gradient from the bulk of the mixture to the liquid-vapor interface while the less volatile solvent is enriched in the same region and exhibit a positive concentration gradient. Such gradients can be used to drive a binary mixture of colloidal particles to stratify if one is preferentially attracted to the more volatile solvent and the other to the less volatile solvent. During solvent evaporation, the fraction of colloidal particles preferentially attracted to the less volatile solvent is enhanced at the evaporation front, whereas the colloidal particles having stronger attractions with the more volatile solvent are driven away from the interfacial region. Extensive molecular simulations are applied to characterize the equilibrium dynamics, entanglement topology, and nonlinear extensional rheology of symmetric ring-linear polymer blends with systematically varied ring fraction $\phi_R$. Chains with degree of entanglement $Z\approx14$ mixed to produce 10 well-entangled systems with $\phi_R$ varying from neat linear to neat ring melts. Primitive path analysis are used to visualize and quantify the structure of the composite ring-linear entanglement network. We directly measure the quantity of ring-linear threading and linear-linear entanglement as a function of $\phi_R$, and identify with simple arguments a ring fraction $\phi_R\approx0.4$ where the topological constraints of the entanglement network are maximized. These topological analyses are used to rationalize the $\phi_R$-dependence of ring and linear chain dynamics, conformations, and blend viscosity. Complimentary simulations of startup uniaxial elongation flows demonstrate the extensional stress overshoot observed in recent filament stretching experiments, and characterize how it depends on the blend composition and entanglement topology. The overshoot is driven by an overstretching and recoil of ring polymer conformations that is caused by the convective unthreading of rings from linear chains. This produces significant changes in the entanglement structure of blends that we directly visualize and quantify with primitive path analyses during flow.

Large scale molecular dynamics simulations are used to study drying suspensions of a binary mixture of large and small particles in explicit and implicit solvents. The solvent is first modeled explicitly and then mapped to a uniform viscous medium by matching the diffusion coefficients and the pair correlation functions of the particles. `Small-on-top' stratification of the particles, with an enrichment of the smaller ones at the receding liquid-vapor interface during drying, is observed in both models under the same drying conditions. With the implicit solvent model, we are able to model much thicker films and study the effect of the initial film thickness on the final distribution of particles in the dry film. Our results show that the degree of stratification is controlled by the P\'{e}clet number defined using the initial film thickness as the characteristic length scale. When the P\'{e}clet numbers of large and small particles are much larger than 1, the degree of `small-on-top' stratification is first enhanced and then weakens as the P\'{e}clet numbers are increased., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

A potential strategy for controlling stratification in a drying suspension of bidisperse particles is studied using molecular dynamics simulations. When the suspension is maintained at a constant temperature during fast drying, it can exhibit "small-on-top" stratification with an accumulation (depletion) of smaller (larger) particles in the top region of the drying film, consistent with the prediction of current theories based on diffusiophoresis. However, when only the region near the substrate is thermalized at a constant temperature, a negative temperature gradient develops in the suspension because of evaporative cooling at the liquid-vapor interface. Since the associated thermophoresis is stronger for larger nanoparticles, a higher fraction of larger nanoparticles migrate to the top of the drying film at fast evaporation rates. As a result, stratification is converted to "large-on-top". Very strong "small-on-top" stratification can be produced with a positive thermal gradient in the drying suspension. Here we explore a way to produce a positive thermal gradient by thermalizing the vapor at a temperature higher than that of the solvent. Large scale molecular dynamics simulations for bidisperse nanoparticle suspensions with an explicit solvent are used to investigate the effects of evaporation rates and volume fractions on the nanoparticle distribution during drying. Our results show that ``small-on-top'' stratification can occur when ${\rm Pe}_s\phi_s \gtrsim c$ with $c\sim 1$, where ${\rm Pe}_s$ is the P\'{e}clet number and $\phi_s$ is the volume fraction of the smaller particles. This threshold of ${\rm Pe}_s\phi_s$ for ``small-on-top'' is larger by a factor of $\sim\alpha^2$ than the prediction of the model treating solvent as an implicit viscous background, where $\alpha$ is the size ratio between the large and small particles. Our simulations further show that when the evaporation rate of the solvent is reduced, the ``small-on-top'' stratification can be enhanced, which is not predicted by existing theories. This unexpected behavior is explained with thermophoresis associated with a positive gradient of solvent density caused by evaporative cooling at the liquid-vapor interface. For ultrafast evaporation the gradient is large and drives the nanoparticles toward the liquid/vapor interface. This phoretic effect is stronger for larger nanoparticles and consequently the ``small-on-top'' stratification becomes more distinct when the evaporation rate is slower (but not too slow such that a uniform distribution of nanoparticles in the drying film is produced), as thermophoresis that favors larger particles on the top is mitigated. A similar effect can lead to ``large-on-top'' stratification for ${\rm Pe}_s\phi_s$ above the threshold when ${\rm Pe}_s$ is large but $\phi_s$ is small. Ordering nanoparticles into a desired super-structure is often crucial for their technological applications. We use molecular dynamics simulations to study the assembly of nanoparticles in a polymer brush randomly grafted to a planar surface as the solvent evaporates. Initially, the nanoparticles are dispersed in a solvent that wets the polymer brush. After the solvent evaporates, the nanoparticles are either inside the brush or adsorbed at the surface of the brush, depending on the strength of the nanoparticle-polymer interaction. For strong nanoparticle-polymer interactions, a 2-dimensional ordered array is only formed when the brush density is finely tuned to accommodate a single layer of nanoparticles. When the brush density is higher or lower than this optimal value, the distribution of nanoparticles shows large fluctuations in space and the packing order diminishes. For weak nanoparticle-polymer interactions, the nanoparticles order into a hexagonal array on top of the polymer brush as long as the grafting density is high enough to yield a dense brush. An interesting healing effect is observed for a low-grafting-density polymer brush that can become more uniform in the presence of weakly adsorbed nanoparticles., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

Large scale molecular dynamics simulations are used to study the dispersion of nanoparticles (NPs) in a polymer film during solvent evaporation. As the solvent evaporates, a dense polymer-rich skin layer forms at the liquid/vapor interface, which is either NP rich or poor depending on the strength of the NP/polymer interaction. When the NPs are strongly wet by the polymer, the NPs accumulate at the interface and form layers. However when the NPs are only partially wet by the polymer, most NPs are uniformly distributed in the bulk of the polymer film with the dense skin layer serving as a barrier to prevent the NPs from moving to the interface. Our results point to a possible route to employ less favorable NP/polymer interactions and fast solvent evaporation to uniformly disperse NPs in a polymer film, contrary to the common belief that strong NP/polymer attractions are needed to make NPs well dispersed in polymer nanocomposites., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

While evaporating solvent is a widely used technique to assemble nano-sized objects into desired superstructures, there has been limited work on how the assembled structures are affected by the physical aspects of the process. We present large scale molecular dynamics simulations of the evaporation-induced assembly of nanoparticles suspended in a liquid that evaporates in a controlled fashion. The quality of the nanoparticle crystal formed just below the liquid/vapor interface is found to be better at relatively slower evaporation rates, as less defects and grain boundaries appear. This trend is understood as the result of the competition between the accumulation and diffusion times of nanoparticles at the liquid/vapor interface. When the former is smaller, nanoparticles are deposited so fast at the interface that they do not have sufficient time to arrange through diffusion, which leads to the prevalence of defects and grain boundaries. Large-scale molecular dynamics simulations are used to simulate a layer of nanoparticles diffusing on the surface of a liquid. Both a low viscosity liquid, represented by Lennard-Jones monomers, and a high viscosity liquid, represented by linear homopolymers, are studied. The organization and diffusion of the nanoparticles are analyzed as the nanoparticle density and the contact angle between the nanoparticles and liquid are varied. When the interaction between the nanoparticles and liquid is reduced the contact angle increases and the nanoparticles ride higher on the liquid surface, which enables them to diffuse faster. In this case the short range order is also reduced as seen in the pair correlation function. For the polymeric liquids, the out-of-layer fluctuation is suppressed and the short range order is slightly enhanced. However, the diffusion becomes much slower and the mean square displacement even shows sub-linear time dependence at large times. The relation between diffusion coefficient and viscosity is found to deviate from that in bulk diffusion. Evaporation and condensation at a liquid/vapor interface are ubiquitous interphase mass and energy transfer phenomena that are still not well understood. We have carried out large scale molecular dynamics simulations of Lennard-Jones (LJ) fluids composed of monomers, dimers, or trimers to investigate these processes with molecular detail. For LJ monomers in contact with a vacuum, the evaporation rate is found to be very high with significant evaporative cooling and an accompanying density gradient in the liquid domain near the liquid/vapor interface. Increasing the chain length to just dimers significantly reduces the evaporation rate. We confirm that mechanical equilibrium plays a key role in determining the evaporation rate and the density and temperature profiles across the liquid/vapor interface. The velocity distributions of evaporated molecules and the evaporation and condensation coefficients are measured and compared to the predictions of an existing model based on kinetic theory of gases. Our results indicate that for both monatomic and polyatomic molecules, the evaporation and condensation coefficients are equal when systems are not far from equilibrium and smaller than one, and decrease with increasing temperature. For the same reduced temperature $T/T_c$, where $T_c$ is the critical temperature, these two coefficients are higher for LJ dimers and trimers than for monomers, in contrast to the traditional viewpoint that they are close to unity for monatomic molecules and decrease for polyatomic molecules. The rheology of nanoparticle suspensions for nanoparticles of various shapes with equal mass is studied using molecular dynamics simulations. The equilibrium structure and the response to imposed shear are analyzed for suspensions of spheres, rods, plates, and jacks in an explicit solvent for both charged and uncharged nanoparticles. For the volume fraction studied, ?$\phi_{vf}=0.075$, the uncharged systems are all in their isotropic phase and the viscosity is only weakly dependent on shape for spheres, rods, and plate whereas for the jacks the viscosity is an order of magnitude larger than for the other three shapes. The introduction of charge increases the viscosity for all four nanoparticle shapes with the increase being the largest for rods and plates. We present results illustrating the effects of using explicit summation terms for the $r^{-6}$ dispersion term on the interfacial properties of a Lennard-Jones fluid and SPC/E water. For the Lennard-Jones fluid, we find that the use of long-range summations, even with a short ``crossover radius,'' yields results that are consistent with simulations using large cutoff radii. Simulations of SPC/E water demonstrate that the long-range dispersion forces are of secondary importance to the Coulombic forces. In both cases, we find that the ratio of box size $L_{\parallel}$ to crossover radius $r_{\rm c}^{\mathbf k}$ plays an important role in determining the magnitude of the long-range dispersion correction, although its effect is secondary when Coulombic interactions are also present., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, accepted by J. We study the rheology and distribution of interparticle contact lifetimes for gravity-driven, dense granular flows of non-cohesive particles down an inclined plane using large-scale, three dimensional, granular dynamics simulations. Rather than observing a large number of long-lived contacts as might be expected for dense flows, brief binary collisions predominate. In the hard particle limit, the rheology conforms to Bagnold scaling, where the shear stress is quadratic in the strain rate. As the particles are made softer, however, we find significant deviations from Bagnold rheology; the material flows more like a viscous fluid. We attribute this change in the collective rheology of the material to subtle changes in the contact lifetime distribution involving the increasing lifetime and number of the long-lived contacts in the softer particle systems., Comment: 4 pages

The form of the stress tensor is investigated in smooth, dense granular flows which are generated in split-bottom shear geometries. We find that, within a fluctuation fluidized spatial region, the form of the stress tensor is directly dictated by the flow field: The stress and strain-rate tensors are co-linear. The effective friction, defined as the ratio between shear and normal stresses acting on a shearing plane, is found not to be constant but to vary throughout the flowing zone. This variation can not be explained by inertial effects, but appears to be set by the local geometry of the flow field. This is in agreement with a recent prediction, but in contrast with most models for slow grain flows, and points to there being a subtle mechanism that selects the flow profiles., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Capillary waves occurring at the liquid-vapor interface of water are studied using molecular dynamics simulations. In addition, the surface tension, determined thermodynamically from the difference in the normal and tangential pressure at the liquid-vapor interface, is compared for a number of standard three- and four-point water models. We study four three-point models (SPC/E, TIP3P, TIP3P-CHARMM, and TIP3P-Ew) and two four-point models (TIP4P and TIP4P-Ew). All of the models examined underestimate the surface tension; the TIP4P-Ew model comes closest to reproducing the experimental data. The surface tension can also be determined from the amplitude of capillary waves at the liquid-vapor interface by varying the surface area of the interface. The surface tensions determined from the amplitude of the logarithmic divergence of the capillary interfacial width and from the traditional thermodynamic method agree only if the density profile is fitted to an error function instead of a hyperbolic tangent function., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, 7 tables. Controlling the spatial distribution of liquid droplets on surfaces via surface energy patterning can be used to control material delivery to specified regions via selective liquid/solid wetting. While studies of the equilibrium shape of liquid droplets on heterogenous substrates exist, much less is known about the corresponding wetting kinetics. We make significant progress towards elucidating details of this topic by studying, via large-scale atomistic simulations, liquid nanodroplets spreading on chemically patterned surfaces. A model is presented for lines of polymer liquid (droplets) on substrates consisting of alternating strips of wetting (equilibrium contact angle approximately 0 degrees) and non-wetting (equilibrium contact angle approximately 90 degrees) material. Droplet spreading is compared for different wavelength of the pattern and strength of surface interaction on the wetting strips. For small wavelength, droplets partially spread on both the wetting and non-wetting regions of the substrate to attain a finite contact angle less than 90 degrees. In this case, the extent of spreading depends on the interaction strength in the wetting regions. A transition is observed such that, for large wavelength, the droplet spreads only on the wetting region of the substrate by pulling material from non-wetting regions. Molecular dynamics simulations are used to study the spreading of binary polymer nanodroplets in a cylindrical geometry. The polymers, described by the bead-spring model, spread on a flat surface with a surface-coupled Langevin thermostat to mimic the effects of a corrugated surface. Each droplet consists of chains of length 10 or 100 monomers with ~350,000 monomers total. The qualitative features of the spreading dynamics are presented for differences in chain length, surface interaction strength, and composition. When the components of the droplet differ only in surface interaction strength, the more strongly wetting component forms a monolayer film on the surface even when both materials are above or below the wetting transition. In the case where the only difference is the polymer chain length, the monolayer film beneath the droplet is composed of an equal amount of short chain and long chain monomers even when one component (the shorter chain length) is above the wetting transition and the other is not. The fraction of short and long chains in the precursor foot depends on whether or not both the short and long chains are in the wetting regime. Diluting the concentration of the strongly wetting component in a mixture with a weakly wetting component decreases the rate of diffusion of the wetting material to the surface and limits the spreading rate of the precursor foot, but the bulk spreading rate is not affected until the more strongly wetting component is removed completely., Comment: 15 pages 7 figures, submitted to Langmuir

The rheology of granular particles in an inclined plane geometry is studied using molecular dynamics simulations. The flow--no-flow boundary is determined for piles of varying heights over a range of inclination angles $\theta$. Three angles determine the phase diagram: $\theta_{r}$, the angle of repose, is the angle at which a flowing system comes to rest; $\theta_{m}$, the maximum angle of stability, is the inclination required to induce flow in a static system; and $\theta_{max}$ is the maximum angle for which stable, steady state flow is observed. In the stable flow region $\theta_{r}<\theta<\theta_{max}$, three flow regimes can be distinguished that depend on how close $\theta$ is to $\theta_{r}$: i) $\theta>>\theta_{r}$: Bagnold rheology, characterized by a mean particle velocity $v_{x}$ in the direction of flow that scales as $v_{x}\propto h^{3/2}$, for a pile of height $h$, ii) $\theta\gtrsim\theta_{r}$: the slow flow regime, characterized by a linear velocity profile with depth, and iii) $\theta\approx\theta_{r}$: avalanche flow characterized by a slow underlying creep motion combined with occasional free surface events and large energy fluctuations. We also probe the physics of the initiation and cessation of flow. The adhesion between a polymer melt and substrate is studied in the presence of chemically attached chains on the substrate surface. Extensive molecular dynamics simulations have been carried out to study the effect of temperature, tethered chain areal density ($\Sigma$), tethered chain length ($N_{t}$), chain bending energy ($k_{\theta}$) and tensile pull velocity ($v$) on the adhesive failure mechanisms of pullout and/or scission of the tethered chains. We observe a crossover from pure chain pullout to chain scission as $N_{t}$ is increased. Below the glass transition, the value of $N_{t}$ for which this crossover begins approaches the bulk entanglement length $N_{e}$. The non-linear stress-strain relation for crosslinked polymer networks is studied using molecular dynamics simulations. Previously we demonstrated the importance of trapped entanglements in determining the elastic and relaxational properties of networks. Here we present new results for the stress versus strain for both dry and swollen networks. Models which limit the fluctuations of the network strands like the tube model are shown to describe the stress for both elongation and compression. For swollen networks, the total modulus is found to decrease like (V_0/V)^{2/3} and goes to the phantom model result only for short strand networks., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, RevTeX

Diffusion of symmetric diblock copolymer chains in macroscopically oriented lamellar block copolymers are studied in a molecular dynamics simulation. Results for diffusion constant both parallel $D_\parallel$ and perpendicular $D_\perp$ to the lamellar planes are compared to results in the disordered one phase region. For diblocks of length N=40 (1.1 N_e) and $100 (3N_e)$, where $N_e$ is the entanglement length of a homopolymer melt at the same density, $D_\parallel$ is nearly independent of $\chi$, while $D_\perp$ is strongly suppressed as $\chi$ is increased. These results are in agreement with theoretical predictions based on the Rouse model. We investigate the elastic properties of small droplets under compression. The compression of a bubble by two parallel plates is solved exactly and it is shown that a lowest-order expansion of the solution reduces to a form similar to that obtained by Morse and Witten. Other systems are studied numerically and results for configurations involving between 2 and 20 compressing planes are presented. It is found that the response to compression depends on the number of planes. We present a new model to describe the unusual elastic properties of compressed emulsions. The response of a single droplet under compression is investigated numerically for different Wigner-Seitz cells. The response is softer than harmonic, and depends on the coordination number of the droplet. Using these results, we propose a new effective inter-droplet potential which is used to determine the elastic response of a monodisperse collection of disordered droplets as a function of volume fraction. Our results are in excellent agreement with recent experiments. Simulations of the structure and dynamics of fluid films confined to a thickness of a few molecular diameters are described. Confining walls introduce layering and in-plane order in the adjacent fluid. The latter is essential to transfer of shear stress. As the film thickness is decreased, by increasing pressure or decreasing the number of molecular layers, the entire film may undergo a phase transition. Spherical molecules tend to crystallize, while short chain molecules enter a glassy state with strong local orientational and translational order. These phase transitions lead to dramatic changes in the response of the film to imposed shear velocities $v$. Spherical molecules show an abrupt transition from Newtonian response to a yield stress as they crystallize. Chain molecules exhibit a continuously growing regime of non-Newtonian behavior where the shear viscosity drops as $v^{-2/3}$ at constant normal load. The same power law is found for a wide range of parameters, and extends to lower and lower velocities as a glass transition is approached. Once in the glassy state, chain molecules exhibit a finite yield stress. Shear may occur either within the film or at the film/wall interface. We examine two aspects of Stockmayer fluids which consists of point dipoles that additionally interact via an attractive Lennard-Jones potential. We perform Monte Carlo simulations to examine the effect of an applied field on the liquid-gas phase coexistence and show that a magnetic fluid phase does exist in the absence of an applied field. As part of the search for the magnetic fluid phase, we perform Gibbs ensemble simulations to determine phase coexistence curves at large dipole moments, $\mu$. The critical temperature is found to depend linearly on $\mu^2$ for intermediate values of $\mu$ beyond the initial nonlinear behavior near $\mu=0$ and less than the $\mu$ where no liquid-gas phase coexistence has been found. For phase coexistence in an applied field, the critical temperatures as a function of the applied field for two different $\mu$ are mapped onto a single curve. The critical densities hardly change as a function of applied field.
