Results are presented for the kinetics of domain growth of a two-dimensional fluid quenched from a disordered to a lamellar phase. At early times when a Lifshitz-Slyozov mechanism is operative the growth process proceeds logarithmically in time to a frozen state with locked-in defects. However when hydrodynamic modes become important, or the fluid is subjected to shear, the frustration of the system is alleviated and the size and orientation of the lamellae attain their equilibrium values., Comment: 4 Revtex pages, 4 figures, to appear in Physical Review Letters

We consider the neutral, one-dimensional Falicov-Kimball model at zero temperature in the limit of a large electron--ion attractive potential, U. By calculating the general n-ion interaction terms to leading order in 1/U we argue that the ground-state of the model exhibits the behavior of a complete devil's staircase., Comment: 6 pages, RevTeX, 3 Postscript figures

Phase diagrams as a function of anisotropy D and magnetic field H are obtained for discommensurations and surface states for a model antiferromagnet in which $H$ is parallel to the easy axis. The surface spin-flop phase exists for all $D$. We show that there is a region where the penetration length of the surface spin-flop phase diverges. Introducing a discommensuration of even length then becomes preferable to reconstructing the surface. The results are used to clarify and correct previous studies in which discommensurations have been confused with genuine surface spin-flop states., Comment: 4 pages, RevTeX, 2 Postscript figures

We consider a three-dimensional Ising model in a transverse magnetic field, $h$ and a bulk field $H$. An interface is introduced by an appropriate choice of boundary conditions. At the point $(H=0,h=0)$ spin configurations corresponding to different positions of the interface are degenerate. By studying the phase diagram near this multiphase point using quantum-mechanical perturbation theory we show that that quantum fluctuations, controlled by $h$, split the multiphase degeneracy giving rise to an infinite sequence of layering transitions., Comment: 16 pages (revtex) including 8 figs; to appear in J. We develop an analytic approach which allows us to study the behaviour of spin models with competing interactions and $p$-fold spin anisotropy, $D$, in the limit where the pinning potential which results from $D$ is large. This is an expansion in inverse spin anisotropy which must be carried out to all orders where necessary. Interesting behaviour occurs near where the boundary between different ground states is infinitely degenerate for infinite $D$. Here as $D$ decreases and the spins are allowed to soften, we are able to demonstrate the existence of several different behaviours ranging from a single first-order boundary to infinite series of commensurate phases. The method is illustrated by considering the soft chiral clock model and the soft clock model with first- and second-neighbour competing interactions. Models with competing interactions, for example the ANNNI model, can have special points at which the ground state is infinitely degenerate, so-called multiphase points. Small perturbations can lift this degeneracy and give rise to infinite sequences of long-period phases. We study the effect of quantum fluctuations on the multiphase point of the Heisenberg model with first- and second-neighbor competing interactions and strong uniaxial spin anisotropy $D$. By studying the structure of perturbation theory we show that the multiphase degeneracy which exists for $S=\infty$ (i.e., for the ANNNI model) is lifted and that the effect of quantum fluctuations is to stabilize a sequence of phases of wavelength 4,6,8,...~. This sequence is probably an infinite one. We present analytic evidence for the occurrence of an upsilon point, an infinite checkerboard structure of modulated phases, in the ground state of a spin model. A lattice Boltzmann scheme able to model the hydrodynamics of phase separation and two-phase flow is described. Thermodynamic consistency is ensured by introducing a non-ideal pressure tensor directly into the collision operator. We also show how an external chemical potential can be used to supplement standard boundary conditions in order to investigate the effect of wetting on phase separation and fluid flow in confined geometries. We obtain the ANNNI model from a Heisenberg model with large single--ion anisotropy energy, $D$, as might be relevant for helical spin systems. We treat quantum fluctuations to lowest order in $1/S$ at zero temperature within an expansion in $J/D$, where $J$ is an exchange energy. We study the ground state of a classical X-Y model with $p \ge 3$-fold spin anisotropy $D$ in a uniform external field, $H$. An interface is introduced into the system by a suitable choice of boundary conditions. For large $D$, as $H \to 0$, we prove using an expansion in $D^{-1}$ that the interface unbinds from the surface through an infinite series of layering transitions. An expansion in inverse spin anisotropy, which enables us to study the behaviour of discrete spin models as the spins soften, is developed. In particular we focus on models, such as the chiral clock model and the $p$-state clock model with competing first and second neighbour interactions, where there are special multiphase points at zero temperature at which an infinite number of ground states are degenerate. The expansion allows calculation of the ground state phase diagram near these points as the spin anisotropy, which constrains the spin to take discrete values, is reduced from infinity. This paper discusses wetting and capillary condensation transitions on a line and a rectangular array of cylinders using an interface potential formalism. For a line of cylinders, there is a capillary condensation transition followed by complete wetting if the cylinders are sufficiently close together. Both transitions disappear as the cylinder separation is increased.
