Optical reflection measurements within the highly conducting (a,b)-plane of the organic metal (BEDT-TTF)_4[Ni(dto)_2] reveal the gradual development of a sharp feature at around 200 cm as the temperature is reduced below 150 K. Below this frequency a narrow Drude-like response is observed which accounts for the metallic behavior. Since de Haas-von Alphen oscillations at low temperatures confirm band structure calculations of bands crossing the Fermi energy, we assign the observed behavior to a two-dimensional metallic state in the proximity of a correlation induced metal-insulator transition., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

In a recent Letter, Kuroki and Aoki [Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 440 (1996)] presented quantum Monte-Carlo (QMC) results for pairing correlations in the three-band Hubbard model, which describes the Cu-d_{x^2-y^2} and O-p_{x,y} orbitals present in the CuO_2 planes of high-T_c materials. In this comment we argue that (i) the used parameter set is not appropriate for the description of high-T_c materials since it does not satisfy the minimal requirement of a charge-transfer gap at half-filling, and (ii) the observed increase in the d_{x^2-y^2} channel is dominantly produced by the pair-field correlations without the vertex part. We consider a Hubbard model on a square lattice with an additional interaction, $W$, which depends upon the square of a near-neighbor hopping. At half-filling and a constant value of the Hubbard repulsion, increasing the strength of the interaction $W$ drives the system from an antiferromagnetic Mott insulator to a $d_{x^2 -y^2}$ superconductor. We use Quantum Monte Carlo methods to determine $T=0$ Green functions, $G(\vec{r}, \omega)$, on lattices up to $16 \times 16$ for the 2D Hubbard model at $U/t =4$. For chemical potentials, $\mu$, within the Hubbard gap, $ |\mu | < \mu_c$, and at {\it long} distances, $\vec{r}$, $G(\vec{r}, \omega = \mu) \sim e^{ -|\vec{r}|/\xi_l}$ with critical behavior: $\xi_l \sim | \mu - \mu_c |^{-\nu}$, $ \nu = 0.26 \pm 0.05$. This result stands in agreement with the assumption of hyperscaling with correlation exponent $\nu = 1/4$ and dynamical exponent $z = 4$. In contrast, the generic band insulator as well as the metal-insulator transition in the 1D Hubbard model are characterized by $\nu = 1/2$ and $z = 2$., Comment: 9 pages (latex) and 5 postscript figures. We present a numerically stable Quantum Monte Carlo algorithm to calculate zero-temperature imaginary-time Green functions $ G(\vec{r}, \tau) $ for Hubbard type models. We illustrate the efficiency of the algorithm by calculating the on-site Green function $ G(\vec{r}=0, \tau) $ on $4 \times 4$ to $12 \times 12$ lattices for the two-dimensional half-filled repulsive Hubbard model at $U/t = 4$. By fitting the tail of $ G(\vec{r}=0, \tau) $ at long imaginary time to the form $e^{-\tau \Delta_c}$, we obtain a precise estimate of the charge gap: $\Delta_c = 0.67 \pm 0.02$ in units of the hopping matrix element. We argue that the algorithm provides a powerful tool to study the metal-insulator transition from the insulator side., Comment: 14 pages (latex) and 3 postscipt figures

Starting from the Hofstadter butterfly, we define lattice versions of Landau levels as well as a continuum limit which ensures that they scale to continuum Landau levels. By including a next-neighbor repulsive interaction and projecting onto the lowest lattice Landau level, we show that incompressible ground states exist at filling fractions, $\nu = 1/3, 2/5 $ and $3/7$. Already for values of $l_0/a \sim 2$ where $l_0$ ($a$) is the magnetic length (lattice constant), the lattice version of the $\nu = 1/3$ state reproduces with nearly perfect accuracy the the continuum Laughlin state. The numerical data strongly suggests that at odd filling fractions of the lowest lattice Landau level, the lattice constant is an irrelevant length scale. The spectral properties of the 1-D Hubbard model are obtained from quantum Monte Carlo simulations using the maximum entropy method. The one-particle excitations are characterized by dispersive cosine-like bands. Velocities for spin- and charge excitations are obtained that lead to a conformal charge c=0.98 +/- 0.05 for the largest system simulated (N=84). An exact sum-rule for the spin-excitations is fulfilled accurately with deviations of at most 10% only around 2 kF., Comment: uuencoded file containing 10 pages text and 6 figures in PostScript format

Based on extensions of the grand-canonical Quantum Monte-Carlo algorithm to incorporate magnetic fields, we provide numerical data confirming the existence of a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition in the attractive Hubbard model. Here, we calculate the temperature derivative of the superfluid density, to pin down the transition. Away from half-band filling, the above quantity, shows a response which increases with lattice size at the transition temperature.
