Using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ over a wide range of doping levels, we present a universal form for the non-Fermi liquid electronic interactions in the nodal direction in the exotic normal state phase. It is described by a continuously varying power law exponent versus energy and temperature (hence named a Power Law Liquid or PLL), which with doping varies smoothly from a quadratic Fermi Liquid in the overdoped regime, to a linear Marginal Fermi Liquid at optimal doping, to a non-quasiparticle non-Fermi Liquid in the underdoped regime. The coupling strength is essentially constant across all regimes and is consistent with Planckian dissipation. Using the extracted PLL parameters we reproduce the experimental optics and resistivity over a wide range of doping and normal-state temperature values, including the T* pseudogap temperature scale observed in the resistivity curves. This breaks the direct link to the pseudogapping of antinodal spectral weight observed at similar temperature scales and gives an alternative direction for searches of the microscopic mechanism., The normal state of hole-doped, high-temperature superconductors is a currently-unexplained "strange metal" with exotic electronic behaviour. Here, the authors show that a doping-dependent power law ansatz for the electronic scattering phenomenologically captures ARPES, transport and optics observations.

Spectroscopic Imaging Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (SI-STM) measurements have previously been applied to the study of the heavy-fermion system CeCoIn5 to examine the superconducting gap structure and band dispersions via quasiparticle intereference. Here we directly measure the dispersing electron bands with angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) and compare with first-principles electronic structure calculations. By autocorrelating the ARPES-resolved bands with themselves we can measure the potential q vectors and discern exactly which bands the STM is measuring. We find that the STM results are dominated by scattering associated with a cloverleaf shaped band centered at the zone corners. This same band is also a viable candidate to host the superconducting gap. The electronic structure calculations indicate that this region of the Fermi surface involves significant contributions from the Co d electrons, an indication that the superconductivity in these materials is more three dimensional than that found in the related unconventional superconductors, the cuprates and the pnictides. publishedVersion

Strong diffusive or incoherent electronic correlations are the signature of the strange-metal normal state of the cuprate superconductors, with these correlations considered to be undressed or removed in the superconducting state. A critical question is if these correlations are responsible for the high-temperature superconductivity. Here, utilizing a development in the analysis of angle-resolved photoemission data, we show that the strange-metal correlations don’t simply disappear in the superconducting state, but are instead converted into a strongly renormalized coherent state, with stronger normal state correlations leading to stronger superconducting state renormalization. This conversion begins well above T C at the onset of superconducting fluctuations and it greatly increases the number of states that can pair. Therefore, there is positive feedback––the superconductive pairing creates the conversion that in turn strengthens the pairing. Although such positive feedback should enhance a conventional pairing mechanism, it could potentially also sustain an electronic pairing mechanism., Whether the normal state electronic correlations in cuprates are responsible for superconductivity remains elusive. Here, Li et al. report that such correlations turn into a renormalized coherent state starting well above the superconducting transition, and it leads to a strengthened superconductive pairing.

The physics of doped Mott insulators remains controversial after decades of active research, hindered by the interplay among competing orders and fluctuations. It is thus highly desired to distinguish the intrinsic characters of the Mott-metal crossover from those of other origins. Here we investigate the evolution of electronic structure and dynamics of the hole-doped pseudospin-1/2 Mott insulator Sr2IrO4. The effective hole doping is achieved by replacing Ir with Rh atoms, with the chemical potential immediately jumping to or near the top of the lower Hubbard band. The doped iridates exhibit multiple iconic low-energy features previously observed in doped cuprates—pseudogaps, Fermi arcs and marginal-Fermi-liquid-like electronic scattering rates. We suggest these signatures are most likely an integral part of the material's proximity to the Mott state, rather than from many of the most claimed mechanisms, including preformed electron pairing, quantum criticality or density-wave formation., The physics of Mott insulators is obscured by the interplay between competing orders and fluctuations. Here, the authors track the evolution of the electronic structure of Mott insulator strontium iridate as the iridium atoms are replaced by rhodium, providing insight into this exotic state of matter.

A Fermi arc is a disconnected segment of a Fermi surface observed in the pseudogap phase of cuprate superconductors. This simple description belies the fundamental inconsistency in the physics of Fermi arcs, specifically that such segments violate the topological integrity of the band. Efforts to resolve this contradiction of experiment and theory have focused on connecting the ends of the Fermi arc back on itself to form a pocket, with limited and controversial success. Here we show the Fermi arc, while composed of real spectral weight, lacks the quasiparticles to be a true Fermi surface. To reach this conclusion we developed a new photoemission-based technique that directly probes the interplay of pair-forming and pair-breaking processes with unprecedented precision. We find the spectral weight composing the Fermi arc is shifted from the gap edge to the Fermi energy by pair-breaking processes. While real, this weight does not form a true Fermi surface, because the quasiparticles, though significantly broadened, remain at the gap edge. This non-quasiparticle weight may account for much of the unexplained behavior of the pseudogap phase of the cuprates.

Perfect fluids are characterized as having the smallest ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density, {\eta}/s, consistent with quantum uncertainty and causality. So far, nearly perfect fluids have only been observed in the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) and in unitary atomic Fermi gases (UFG), exotic systems that are amongst the hottest and coldest objects in the known universe, respectively. We use Angle Resolve Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES) to measure the temperature dependence of an electronic analogue of {\eta}/s in an optimally doped cuprate high temperature superconductor, finding it too is a nearly perfect fluid around, and above, its superconducting transition temperature Tc., Comment: Article in press with Phys. Conventional superconductivity is robust against the addition of impurities unless the impurities are magnetic in which case superconductivity is quickly suppressed. Here we present a study of the cuprate superconductor Bi${}_{2}$Sr${}_{2}$Ca${}_{1}$Cu${}_{2}$O${}_{8+\ensuremath{\delta}}$ that is intentionally doped with the magnetic impurity, Fe. Through the use of our tomographic density of states technique, we find that while the superconducting gap magnitude is essentially unaffected by the inclusion of iron, the onset of superconductivity, ${T}_{\mathrm{C}}$, and the pair-breaking rate are strongly dependent and correlated. These findings suggest that, in the cuprates, the pair-breaking rate is critical to the determination of ${T}_{\mathrm{C}}$ and that magnetic impurities do not disrupt the strength of pairing but rather the lifetime of the pairs.

We use the tomographic density of states (TDOS), which is a measure of the density of states for a single slice through the band structure of a solid, to study the temperature evolution of the superconducting gap in the cuprates. The TDOS provides accuracy in determining both the superconducting pair-forming strength $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ and the pair-breaking rate $\ensuremath{\Gamma}$. In both optimally and underdoped Bi${}_{2}$Sr${}_{2}$CaCu${}_{2}$O${}_{8+\ensuremath{\delta}}$, we find the near-nodal $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ smoothly evolves through the superconducting transition temperature---clear evidence for the existence of preformed pairs. Additionally, we find the long-observed ``filling'' of the superconducting gap in the cuprates is due to the strongly temperature-dependent $\ensuremath{\Gamma}$.
