Abstract

International audience; Lignocellulosic biomass is the most abundant carbon source and it is a base of the whole biorefinery concept. Levoglucosan (1,6-anhydro-β-D-glucopyranose) (LG) is an anhydrous sugar formed as a major product during pyrolysis of cellulose. LG might be a promising chemical platform. It can be converted to different high added-value chemicals such as levoglucosenone, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural and styrene directly or through a glucose intermediate via chemical, catalytic and biochemical processes. In this critical review we focus not only on the pyrolytic methods for the synthesis of levoglucosan, but above all also on the recent scientific progress in the chemical and biochemical transformation of levoglucosan to highly valued compounds. The catalytic performances of the heterogeneous and enzymatic catalytic systems used for different reactions of LG conversion are reviewed. Specific properties of the active sites, roles of additives, and solvents and conditions are discussed in detail. We conclude on recommendations to further improve LG conversion to high added-value products.

Abstract

We report the design and synthesis of europium-doped gadolinium oxysulfide nanoscintillators Gd2 O2 S:Eu3+ conjugated with two different photosensitizers (PSs): a zinc chlorin (ZnTPC) and a zinc phtalocyanine (ZnPc) by covalent bonding through a layer of N-(3-trimethoxysilylpropyl)diethylenetriamine (TPDA). These conjugates were designed to be activated under X-ray excitation to allow a photodynamic effect, although this desired outcome was not achieved in this study. The monodispersed nanoparticles of ∼70 nm diameter were pegylated to be stabilized in aqueous suspension. It was shown that the PSs conserved their photophysical properties once conjugated to the nanoscintillator and efficient singlet oxygen was obtained upon photo-irradiation. However, no energy transfer was observed from the nanoscintillator to the photosensitizer neither under photo- nor X-ray irradiation.

Abstract

Half-cell is an ex situ device generally used in fuel cell investigations. The present work is related to half-cell investigations of a particular catalyst for polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells, namely Pt/Vulcan catalyst grafted with 5 wt.% polystyrene sulfonate (PSSA). It was found that the behavior of the half-cell to be immersed in a sulfuric solution was influenced by the hot-pressing conditions in the preparation process: optimum hot-pressing conditions had to be searched for improved, reliable performance of half cells. A stable Nafion® membrane interface on the catalytic layer (CL) was obtained at 135 °C, 40 bars for 6 min. Otherwise, owing to the ion-exchange properties of the PSSA graft, electrodes were prepared with lower amounts of Nafion® and the effect of Nafion® introduction in the preparation was discussed: test electrodes mounted in half-cell had either 0.25 or 0.50 mg cm−2 Nafion® dispersed in CL, or with 0.50 mg cm−2 deposited on CL surface. Their performances for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) were studied using linear voltammetry (LV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Cyclic voltammetry was used for determination of the electrochemical surface area (ECSA) of each electrode. It has been shown that fresh electrodes with 0.50 mg cm−2 Nafion® dispersed in CL exhibit promoted behavior in ORR. However, the GDE prepared with Nafion® deposition on CL surface exhibits the best resistance to ageing tests performed by potential cycling between 0 and 1.2 V/NHE, as revealed by ECSA measurements.

Abstract

International audience; This study aims to characterize the sedimentation velocity and the rheology of suspensions of hematite particles suspended in strongly alkaline media at 100 and 110 degrees C, as done for an alternative electrochemical process in development for iron production by direct electrode reduction of hematite. Considering the medium used in the process, i.e. 12% (v/v) suspension of hematite particles in 50% sodium hydroxide aqueous, the sedimentation velocity of hematite particle at 110 degrees C is 0.010 mm/s, which is very slow because the average size of the solid particles is around 10 mu m and the significant collisions and inter-actions occuring between the particles in the concentrated suspension. Two geometries were used to characterize the theological behavior of the apparent viscosity of the suspension of 12% (v/v) (i.e. 33 wt%) at 100 degrees C: a conventional Couette geometry and a helical ribbon mixer. The suspension was found shear thinning in the range of shear rate studied. The rheological behavior of the suspension can be described by a power-law model. The apparent viscosity of the hematite suspension estimated at a shear rate between 0.5 and 10 s(-1) is between 100 and 20 mPa s for the two geometries. The apparent viscosity calculated from the terminal velocity of 10 mu m particles is of the same order of magnitude of the results obtained with the two rheometer configurations. The effect of the particle concentration on the sedimentation velocity and viscosity of the hematite suspensions was also studied.

Abstract

Two halophytes, Atriplex halimus and Atriplex hortensis , were selected to be tested for phytodesalination of road runoff. A 60 d pot experiment was conducted and germination, survival, growth, and bioaccumulation of NaCl and trace metals by both species were monitored in conditions simulating those encountered in road runoff treatment systems. NaCl concentration was controlled in the hydration solution and ranged from 0 to 2 g/L. Germination and survival of young seedlings were not affected by salinity increase in the tested range. Growth was enhanced by NaCl in the hydration solution for A. halimus whereas water content (WC) was significantly and negatively correlated with NaCl concentration. No significant effect of NaCl concentration in the hydration solution was recorded on either growth or WC for A. hortensis . Both Atriplex species accumulated Na + and other cations. Results for Na/K molar ratio indicated that A. halimus was not affected as much as A. hortensis in its homeostasis and nutritional capacities. These results show that both Atriplex species are able to germinate, grow and accumulate sodium when watered with hydration solutions polluted with NaCl. They are therefore good candidates for phytodesalination of road runoff polluted by deicing salts, and should be tested at the pilot scale.

International audience; The pinch off of heterogeneous ferrofluid drops at a nozzle in air was experimentally investigated with a magnetic field (downward or upward) and without a magnetic field. Compared to homogeneous drops, the self-similarity and universal scaling law were verified through modifying the initial conditions, such as the nozzle diameter, flow rate, and magnitude and direction of the magnetic fields. Two pinch-off points were observed, and the two consecutive pinch-off dynamics were characterized through scaling laws. Here our scaling exponent remains within the scope of (0.70-0.80) for the primary whereas it remains within the scope of (0.60-0.70) for the secondary pinch off, respectively, comparable to the classic range from 2/3 to 1 for homogeneous drops. The gravity-compensating and gravity-superimposing magnetic fields display a negligible effect on the exponent but determine the sequence of double pinch offs. The universal character of the self-similar pinch off is extended to a heterogeneous fluid.

Abstract

Nowadays, superhydrophobicity has been the limelight of the academic community owing to the plethora of applications. In this work, the downhill motion of liquid drops and liquid marbles was investigated by two distinct particle-laden interfaces. Liquid drops and liquid marbles accelerate firstly and then move on the slope with a steady velocity which decreases with the liquid viscosity. The steady velocity of liquid marbles is lower than that of liquid drops while the maximum aspect ratio of liquid marbles is higher than that of liquid drops, due to different interface interactions. The particles on the solid substrate enhance the motion of liquid drops while those on the liquid surface reduce the surface tension of liquid marbles. Both liquid drops on non-stick solid surface and non-stick liquid marbles on solid substrate could provide theoretical basis for the precisely targeted transportation of small quantities of liquids by particle-laden interfaces, especially in chemical and biomedical applications.

Abstract

International audience; The effect of confinement on the droplet formation in T junctions was studied for three configurations of fluid injection. The sizes of the main droplets and the satellite droplets were measured in the squeezing and dripping regimes. The evolution of droplet sizes with capillary number in the continuous phase is similar to that in flow-focusing junctions, i.e., the size of the main droplets decreases with an increase of this capillary number, while the size of the satellite droplets increases with an increase of this capillary number. While in the range of flow rates investigated the injection configuration does not exhibit a significant effect on the main droplet sizes, it does have an effect on the size of the satellite droplets. The latter ones are smaller when the neck rupture of the droplet occurs on an angle of the microsystem.

Abstract

Process intensification has emerged as a strategy to satisfy the objectives of process efficiency, sustainable development and economic competitiveness. Unfortunately, intensified technologies are too numerous to fit in a time-constrained academic syllabus. For high pedagogic impact, appropriate case studies should be favored to cover a wide range of strategies while demonstrating these opportunities, using accessible tools and concepts. The developed case study demonstrates the gain of sustainability offered by applying multi-scale design to a cyclonic separation, enabling miniaturization at constant efficiency. The analysis leads to well-known multi-cyclonic systems. This example is particularly striking for students since multi-cyclonic vacuum cleaners are a domestic illustration of this strategy. The analysis aims to miniaturize the separator, at constant efficiency and dissipated mechanical power. By applying a scale factor to cyclone dimensions, while maintaining the efficiency, a first strategy demonstrates that miniaturization alone cannot be sustainable. The best strategy considers parallel miniature cyclones, which enables to satisfy all objectives: the volume and dissipated mechanical power can be reduced simultaneously, requiring a multi-objective optimization. Scenarios for integration of the case study in various curricula are proposed, by differentiating the learning outcomes as a function of student level and course objectives.

Abstract

Aim: The strategy developed aims to favor the vascular effect of photodynamic therapy by targeting tumor-associated vascularization using peptide-functionalized nanoparticles. We previously described the conjugation of a photosensitizer to a peptide targeting neuropilin-1 overexpressed in tumor angiogenic vessels. Materials & Methods: In this study, we have designed and photophysically characterized a multifunctional nanoparticle consisting of a surface-localized tumor vasculature targeting peptides and encapsulated photodynamic therapy and imaging agents. Results & Conclusion: The elaboration of these multifunctional silica-based nanoparticles is reported. Nanoparticles functionalized with approximately 4.2 peptides bound to recombinant neuropilin-1 protein. Nanoparticles conferred photosensitivity to cells overexpressing neuropilin-1, providing evidence that the chlorin grafted within the nanoparticle matrix can be photoactivated to yield photocytotoxic effects in vitro.

Abstract

High solid anaerobic digestion (HSAD) is a promising technology for the treatment of organic waste. Mixing process in HSAD is quite difficult with long mixing time, poor homogenization, significant short-circuiting and stagnant zones. However, the mass transfer in mixing process in HSAD has not been visualized due to the lack of a proper method. In this study, a novel approach for experimentally quantifying the mass transfer in HSAD’s mixing process was proposed in a mixing tank equipped with multistage impellers by means of the Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) technique. Flow field was investigated for better illustrating the mass transfer, thus Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) technique were conducted for flow field measurement. The obtained results revealed that the feedstock tended to accumulate around the impeller in the HSAD system, especially near the 1st stage. The tracer diffused rapidly around the 1st impeller in t = 10 s, but the diffusion around the 2nd impeller was quite tough even after 4 h 08 min 23 s. And prolonging mixing time could not significantly improve the flow pattern along with the mixing. In this study, new insight was thrown into the visualization of the mass transfer in mixing process within a HSAD reactor. The visualization of mass transfer in the mixing process in HSAD could offer reference information to the study of the mixing process of HSAD even in full-scale.

Abstract

In the present work, L-glutamic acid production by Corynebacterium glutamicum fermentation on date juice extracts applying two fed-batch feeding modes, pulsed and continuous, were investigated. According to the obtained results, the continuous feeding fed-batch mode was found to be the most efficient process. Moreover the continuous feeding rate mode with a feeding medium containing date juice sugars enriched with ammonium sulfate was found even more favorable as it enhances the L-glutamic acid production by approximately 2.35 fold more than the batch culture and by about 1.17 fold more than the pulsed feeding. In this respect, comparing the traditional batch culture to the continuously fed culture with a medium containing date juice sugars with ammonium sulfate showed increases of 135.47% in L-glutamic acid production, 104% in productivity, 39.09% in biomass, and 47.69% in the yield respectively allowing us to reach a final L-glutamic acid concentration of about 138 g/L, the highest ever published.

Abstract

Nickel hyperaccumulation in Blepharidium guatemalense Standl. (Rubiaceae) was found in the tropical forests of south-eastern Mexico. This study aimed to document the geographic extent of nickel hyperaccumulation in this species, to understand its process of hyperaccumulation and to explore nickel distribution within the tissues of this plant. To accomplish these objectives, a complete non-destructive elemental screening of herbarium specimens was performed with a hand-held X-ray fluorescence spectrometer. Besides, rhizosphere soils and plant tissues were collected in Mexico and analyzed for physical–chemical parameters. Finally, elemental distribution maps of nickel and other elements in plant tissues were obtained by X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and microscopy. This study revealed that Blepharidium guatemalense is distributed throughout Chiapas, Tabasco and Campeche, reaching the maximum nickel concentration in leaves (4.3 wt%) followed by roots and seeds (2.0 wt%) and bark (1.8 wt%). Simultaneous hyperaccumulation of cobalt and nickel was found in 15% of the herbarium specimens. Blepharidium guatemalense has uncommon re-distribution mechanisms via phloem since this tissue is the highest nickel-enriched from all parts of the plant (from roots to leaves). A high total nickel (mean of 610 µg g−1) was found in rhizosphere soils even though no evidence of ophiolite emplacement in that area has been reported. Blepharidium guatemalense represents the first hypernickelophore (> 1 wt% Ni) to be reported as growing in soils that are neither ultramafic nor enriched by anthropogenic pollutants.

Abstract

Cyclic and aromatic hydrocarbons are important components of usual commercial fuels, with C6-rings being among the most abundant cyclic structures. The combustion chemistry of C6-rings involves different levels of unsaturation, either as initial fuels (aromatics, naphtenes, …) or as intermediates formed during their combustion. In this work the ignition delays of cyclohexane, cyclohexene, 1,3-cyclohexadiene and 1,4-cyclohexadiene are systematically studied using experiments and kinetic modeling. Shock tube experiments were performed at high-temperature (above 1200 K) and for mean pressures of 6 atm. A detailed chemical kinetic model was developed that includes the combustion chemistry of the four cyclo-C6 fuels. Electronic structure calculations were performed at the CCSD(T)/CBS//B2PLYP-D3 level of theory on the pericyclic reactions of the unsaturated fuels. Pressure-dependent rate coefficients were computed by solving the master equation, and included in the mechanism. The model was validated against the new ignition data and against data of the literature. It was able to reproduce the experimental ranking of reactivity: cyclohexene > 14-CHD > cyclohexane > benzene ≈13-CHD. Kinetic analyses were performed to explain this difference of reactivity. It is shown that pericyclic reactions play a major role in the initial decomposition of the unsaturated fuels.

Abstract

1H-Phenalen-1-one is a very efficient and easy-to-synthesize photosensitizer. Many substitutions have been previously described, but most of them significantly reduce the singlet oxygen quantum yield. The chloromethyl derivative described elsewhere is a good starting point for the synthesis of many useful derivatives because of the methylene bridge that saves its unique photosensitizing properties. Eighteen new phenalenone derivatives have been synthesized, bearing amine, carboxylic acid, alcohol, azide, and other major functional groups in organic chemistry. These reactions were carried out in good-to-excellent yields, and most of these new compounds retained the singlet oxygen quantum yield of the parent molecule. These new derivatives are very promising precursors for a number of applications such as the development of photosensitive antimicrobial agents or materials.

Abstract

As a result of their intrinsic compl5exity and their severe consequences, the study of hybrid mixture explosions requires the consideration of several additional factors and parameters than the study of gas-only and dust-only explosions. The main objective of this work is to perform an exhaustive analysis of the explosion severity of wheat starch/pyrolysis gases hybrid mixtures in the context of the 20-L Sphere Test and to determine how severe hybrid mixture explosions can be when compared to one phase explosions. Several experimental tests were performed at different concentrations of both phases and at fixed operating conditions of ignition delay time (tv) and nozzle geometry. CFD simulations from a previously-validated model were run alongside in order to complement the experimental findings and expand the understanding of the hybrid system as a whole, especially in terms of the development and interaction of the phases’ chemical reactions. The experimental and CFD data were analysed using severity maps and adapted stoichiometric parameters proposed in the literature. It was found that the explosion regimes proposed in the literature are not universally-applicable to all types of hybrid mixtures, given that, for wheat starch/pyrolysis gases hybrid mixtures, each regime could not be uniquely characterized and differences in the explosion behaviour were observed within the same regime. In contrast, it was found that analysing the data in terms of parameters that take into account the nature of the chemical reactions of the phases is a superior methodology given that it provides a more rigorous comparative basis for assessing the explosion severity of different types of combustible materials, including hybrid mixtures.

Abstract

Achieving the United Nations sustainable development goals requires industry and society to develop tools and processes that work at all scales, enabling goods delivery, services, and technology to large conglomerates and remote regions. Process Intensification (PI) is a technological advance that promises to deliver means to reach these goals, but higher education has yet to totally embrace the program. Here, we present practical examples on how to better teach the principles of PI in the context of the Bloom's taxonomy and summarise the current industrial use and the future demands for PI, as a continuation of the topics discussed in Part 1. In the appendices, we provide details on the existing PI courses around the world, as well as teaching activities that are showcased during these courses to aid students' lifelong learning. The increasing number of successful commercial cases of PI highlight the importance of PI education for both students in academia and industrial staff. (C) 2020 The Author(s). Abstract

In 2015 all the United Nations (UN) member states adopted 17 sustainable development goals (UN-SDG) as part of the 2030 Agenda, which is a 15-year plan to meet ambitious targets to eradicate poverty, protect the environment, and improve the quality of life around the world. Although the global community has progressed, the pace of implementation must accelerate to reach the UN-SDG time-line. For this to happen, professionals, institutions, companies, governments and the general public must become cognizant of the challenges that our world faces and the potential technological solutions at hand, including those provided by chemical engineering. Process intensification (PI) is a recent engineering approach with demonstrated potential to significantly improve process efficiency and safety while reducing cost. It offers opportunities for attaining the UN-SDG goals in a cost-effective and timely manner. However, the pedagogical tools to educate undergraduate, graduate students, and professionals active in the field of PI lack clarity and focus. This paper sets out the state-of-the-art, main discussion points and guidelines for enhanced PI teaching, deliberated by experts in PI with either an academic or industrial background, as well as representatives from government and specialists in pedagogy gathered at the Lorentz Center (Leiden, The Netherlands) in June 2019 with the aim of uniting the efforts on education in PI and produce guidelines. In this Part 1, we discuss the societal and industrial needs for an educational strategy in the framework of PI. The terminology and background information on PI, related to educational implementation in industry and academia, are provided as a preamble to Part 2, which presents practical examples that will help educating about the potential of Process Intensification.

Abstract

The present work focusses on measuring the permeability across gas diffusion layers (GDLs) first in a dedicated cell and later in PEM fuel cell configuration with varying bi-polar plate designs. Eight carbon paper-based GDLs with and without the microporous layer (MPL), have been tested. An in-house designed dedicated cell allowed measuring pressure drop depending on flow rate, for i) through-plane and ii) in-plane direction. Further, transport measurements were conducted in 25 cm2 bi-polar plates (BPs) in fuel cell configuration having single or multiple serpentine channels, by stacking the GDL inside. The results show that gas permeability in the dedicated cell for through-plane and in-plane can be estimated by using Darcy's law. However, for BPs, the flow is affected additionally by inertial contribution (Darcy-Forchheimer). Finally, the efficiency allowed by selected GDLs installed in a fuel cell under operation shows a relationship between the equivalent permeability and the fuel cell performance.

Abstract

Designing and manufacturing multifunctional nanoparticles (NPs) are of considerable interest for both academic and industrial research. Among NPs used in this field, iron oxide NPs show low toxicity compared to metallic ones and are thus of high interest for biomedical applications. In this work, superparamagnetic Fe3−δO4-based core/shell NPs were successfully prepared and characterized by the combination of different techniques, and their physical properties were investigated. We demonstrate the efficiency of the layer-by-layer process to graft polyelectrolytes on the surface of iron oxide NPs. The influence of the polyelectrolyte chain configuration on the magnetic properties of the Fe3−δO4/polymer core/shell NPs was enlightened. The simple and fast process described in this work is efficient for the grafting of polyelectrolytes from surfaces, and thus, derived Fe3−δO4 NPs display both the physical properties of the core and of the macromolecular shell. Finally, the cytotoxicity toward the human THP-1 monocytic cell line of the core/shell NPs was assessed. The results showed that the polymer-capped Fe3−δO4 NPs exhibited almost no toxicity after 24 h of exposure at concentrations up to 25 μg mL–1. Our results show that these smart superparamagnetic nanocarriers with stealth properties are promising for applications in multimodal cancer therapy, including drug delivery.

Abstract

One of the most frequently used methods to purify air contaminated by particles, in many industrial processes, is filter media. Although the performance of filter media is relatively well documented under standard conditions (humidity and ambient temperature), few studies are interested in the interaction between moisture and the deposition of particles collected. The proposed study aims to establish the performance of a fibrous media with aerosols composed of nanostructured solid particles (soot) and the influence of relative humidity (RH) on its pressure drop. In a first part, the impact of relative humidity on the mass loading capacity of flat HEPA filter with soot particles during clogging is investigated. In a second part, exposure of filters loaded (at 35% RH) with soot particles by a clean air at relative humidity rate between 50 and 90% is tested. The results show a significant decrease of pressure drop for high relative humidity rate. Knowing soot particles are non-hygroscopic and non-hydrophilic, shows an interesting phenomenon, which could be not link to the nature of the particles. A model has be done with the results obtained. Abstract

The term “Industry 4.0″, which refers to a fourth industrial revolution, is a recent neologism. The rise of digital technology including, artificial intelligence, the Internet of things and networks, “smart” and responsive devices, etc … is more and more omnipresent. In solving the related challenges of Industry 4.0, it is necessary to improve the involvement and training of employers and employees. This is particularly true for their education in process safety. Two surveys were submitted to the relevant stakeholders. Their results showed absence of industry 4.0 topics in the current courses on process safety. On the other hand, a review of the master's degree programs available in Europe revealed the recent emergence of new highly specialized courses in some of the topics of industry 4.0. The definition of “Safety 4.0″ leads to recommend two potential global training pathways, with one corresponding to the requirements of Industry 4.0 & Safety 4.0 intersections, recommended within the framework of pedagogical taxonomy models.

Abstract

The tension on the supply of surgical and FFP2 masks during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic leads to study the potential reuse of these masks. As washing is easily adaptable at home, this treatment solution was retained. In this work, thirty-six references of surgical masks and four FFP2 masks were tested without being worn or washed and after several washing cycles. The results highlighted a great heterogeneity of performances depending on the mask trademarks, both for surgical masks and FFP2. The quality of the meltblown and spunbond layers and the presence/absence of electrostatic charges at the fiber surface are put forward to explain the variability of results, both on differential pressures and filtration efficiencies. The differential pressure and the particle filtration efficiency of the washed masks were maintained up to 10 washing cycles and met the standard requirements. However, an immersion in water with a detergent induces an efficiency decrease for submicronic particles. This lower performance, constant after the first washing cycle, can be explained by the loss of electrostatic charges during the washing cycle. The modifications of surface properties after washing also lead to a loss of the hydrophobic behavior of type IIR surgical masks, which can therefore no more be considered as resistant to blood projections.

Abstract

International audience; Antioxidant compounds are chemicals of primary importance, especially for their applications in nutrition and healthcare, thanks to their abilities to prevent oxidation processes and to limit and/or rebalance the oxidative stress, well-known for its impact on a wide variety of diseases. While several biomolecules are well-known for their antioxidant properties (e.g., ascorbic acid, carotenoids, phenolic derivatives), bio-sourced antioxidants have drawn considerable attention in the last decades, especially bioactive peptides, mainly obtained by the hydrolysis process. Antioxidant peptide sequences are mainly identified a posteriori, thanks to fastidious and time-consuming approaches and techniques, limiting the discovery of new efficient peptides. In this context and taking inspiration from nature, we report herein on a new series of three bio-inspired antioxidant peptides derived from the milk protein casein. These phosphopeptides, designed to chelate the redox-active iron(III) and forming highly soluble complexes up to pH 9, act both as indirect (i.e., inhibition of the metal redox activity) and direct (i.e., radical scavenging) antioxidants

Abstract

International audience; The phase behavior of the CO2 (1) + 2,3-dimethylbutane (2) binary mixture has been experimentally studied between 293 and 373 K. Saturation pressures, ranging from 14.0 to 112.2 bar, were visually measured using a high-pressure cell at carbon dioxide mole fractions between 0.20 and 0.93.78 experimental points have been measured: 67 bubble points and 11 dew points. Experimental results reveal that the vapor-liquid critical locus is a continuous curve between the two pure compounds, meaning that the studied binary system exhibits a type I or II phase behavior in the classification scheme of Van Konynenburg and Scott. The experimental data can be very satisfactorily represented by the Peng-Robinson equation of state with mixing rules that embed a temperature-dependent binary interaction parameter.

Abstract

International audience; The Rhamnus alaternus plant is a rich source of excellent bioactive compounds including polyphenols and flavonoids. Yet, the improvement of the extraction yield of total polyphenol content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) from this plant has never been inspected in depth. Hence, using a 15-run Box-Behnken design, a dynamic maceration process was optimized for the extraction of TPC and TFC in order to investigate the antioxidant capacity of the various fractions by DPPH assay. Three factors (i.e., ratio of solvent-to-solid material plant, stirring speed and extraction time), were investigated and optimized for establishing a cost-effective process in order to produce extracts rich in phenolic components. With a desirability value of 0.970, the optimal extraction parameters of polyphenols and flavonoids were as follows: a ratio of solvent-to-solid of 10:1 mL/g, a stirring speed of 518 rpm, and 24 h of extraction. For such optimized conditions of dynamic maceration, the highest total polyphenols and total flavonoids contents were experimentally determined at 230.9 mg GAE/g and 121.1 mg QE/g of extract, respectively with an IC50 value of 22.5 μg/mL, and were in agreement with the obtained model values.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to bring valuable phase equilibria information for the design and operation of biolubricant and related biofuel product processes. As a result, Vapor-Liquid Equilibrium (VLE) measurements, at different temperatures, pressures and global compositions, for the ternary systems [Ethanol + 2-Ethyl-1-hexanol + 1-Dodecanol] and [Ethanol + 1-Octanol + 1-Dodecanol], as well as a multicomponent system containing these alcohols together with Balanites aegyptiaca fatty acid ethyl esters are reported for the first time (data pressure and temperature ranges: 4394–26790 Pa, 306–423 K). The Dortmund modified UNIFAC model showed very high accuracy in the prediction of these VLE, with overall average absolute deviations on the liquid and vapor molar compositions of 0.007 and 0.0003 for the ternary systems, 0.003 and 0.006 for the multicomponent system. Abstract

Titanium-based metal-organic framework (Ti-MOF) is part of the MOF family and has attracted much interest for its unique structural features. Some Ti-based MOFs are difficult to crystallize during the synthesis process; hence only limited studies have been reported. Moreover, the fundamental of Ti-MOF has received less attention, which is crucial to the provision of scientific information for customizing Ti-MOF with suitable properties for practical applications. Thus, this review highlights the Ti-based MOF structure and subsequently summarizes the discovery and development of ever-emerging MIL-125 as advanced materials with multifunctional properties. MIL-125 is a Ti-based MOF derived from Ti metal ions and carboxylate organic ligands. Different modification strategies have been outlined, such as functionalizing with ligands, modifying with metal ions, or incorporating other materials. The versatility and flexibility of MIL-125 elevate its prospects in photocatalytic applications, such as photodegradation of water pollutants, water splitting, and photoreduction of CO2. Finally, the future perspectives were presented at the end of this review to provide beneficial information aiming to expand the capability of MIL-125 in advanced chemistry and materials.

Abstract

Since a clinical dose requires a minimum of 106 cells per kilogram of patients, it is therefore crucial to develop a scalable method of production of Wharton Jelly Mesenchymal stem cells (WJ-MSCs) with maintained inner characteristics. Scalable expansion of WJ-MSCs on microcarriers usually found in cell culture, involved specific cell detachment using trypsin, and could have harmful effects on cells. In this work, performance of batch, fed-batch and perfused-continuous mode of culture were compared. The batch and fed-batch modes resulted in expansion factors of 5 and 43, respectively. The perfused-continuous mode strategy consisted in the implementation of a settling tube inside the bioreactor. The diameter of the tube was calculated to maintain microcarriers colonized by cells in the bioreactor whereas empty microcarriers (responsible of potentially damaging collisions) were removed, using a continuous flow rate based on MSCs physiological requirements. Thanks to this strategy, a maximal number of 800 million of cells was obtained in a 1.5 L bioreactor in 10 days. Lastly, on-line dielectric spectroscopy was implemented in the bioreactor and indicated that cell growth could be monitored during the culture. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract

Membrane contactors offer promising performances for the intensification of gas liquid absorption processes. Impressive volume reduction factors compared to packed columns have been reported, mostly for absorption in chemical solvents (e.g. CO2 post combustion capture with MEA). A very limited number of studies addressed however the potentialities of membrane contactors for physical absorption processes. Moreover, the interplay between volume reduction and energy requirement, which is expected to be of major importance for physical solvents, is unexplored. In this study, a systematic parametric analysis of the intensification and specific energy requirement of membrane contactors for CO2 absorption in 5 different physical solvents is reported. The best flow configuration, module packing fraction and membrane properties (mass transfer performances) are identified for the different solvents. Very high intensification factors compared to the baseline technology (i.e. packed column) are shown to be potentially achievable.
