Abstract

Purpose Radiofrequency field inhomogeneity is a significant issue in imaging large fields of view in high- and ultrahigh-field MRI. Passive shimming with coupled coils or dielectric pads is the most common approach at 3 T. We introduce and test light and compact metasurface, providing the same homogeneity improvement in clinical abdominal imaging at 3 T as a conventional dielectric pad. Methods The metasurface comprising a periodic structure of copper strips and parallel-plate capacitive elements printed on a flexible polyimide substrate supports propagation of slow electromagnetic waves similar to a high-permittivity slab. We compare the metasurface operating inside a transmit body birdcage coil to the state-of-the-art pad by numerical simulations and in vivo study on healthy volunteers. Results Numerical simulations with different body models show that the local minimum of B 1 + causing a dark void in the abdominal domain is removed by the metasurface with comparable resulting homogeneity as for the pad with decreasing maximum and whole-body SAR values. In vivo results confirm similar homogeneity improvement and demonstrate the stability to body mass index. Conclusion The light, flexible, and inexpensive metasurface can replace a relatively heavy and expensive pad based on the aqueous suspension of barium titanate in abdominal imaging at 3 T.

Abstract

High-permittivity dielectric pads, i.e., thin, flexible slabs, usually consisting of mixed ceramic powders and liquids, have been previously shown to increase the magnetic field at high and ultra high-fields in regions of low efficiency of transmit coils, thus improving the homogeneity of images. However, their material parameters can change with time, and some materials they contain are bio incompatible. This article presents an alternative approach replacing ceramic mixtures with a low-cost and stable artificial dielectric slab. The latter comprises a stack of capacitive grids realized using multiple printed-circuit boards. Results in this article show that the proposed artificial dielectric structure can obtain the same increase in the local transmit radiofrequency magnetic field distribution in a head phantom at 7 T as the conventional dielectric pad. Abstract

Due to the wavelengths’ reduction in the human tissues at ultra-high field MRI, head coils usually present B$_{\mathbf{1}}^{\mathbf{+}}$ magnetic field inhomogeneities located at the brain’s temporal lobes. Different approaches have effectively targeted this problem, at the cost of either decrease the B$_{\mathbf{1}}^{\mathbf{+}}$ field in other regions or be uncomfortable to the patient. Here, we present a new approach based on Hilbert fractal inspired dipoles. Our structures improved simultaneously the B}$_{\mathbf{1}}^{\mathbf{+}}$ field in each temporal lobe without diminishing the B$_{\mathbf{1}}^{\mathbf{+}}$ field in other parts of the brain or the patients’ comfort.

Abstract

In this paper we address the possibility to perform imaging of two samples within the same acquisition time using coupled ceramic resonators and one transmit/receive channel. We theoretically and experimentally compare the operation of our ceramic dual‐resonator probe with a wire‐wound solenoid probe, which is the standard probe used in ultrahigh‐field magnetic resonance microscopy. We show that due to the low‐loss ceramics used to fabricate the resonators, and a favorable distribution of the electric field within the conducting sample, a dual probe, which contains two samples, achieves an SNR enhancement by a factor close to the square root of 2 compared with a solenoid optimized for one sample., The possibility of simultaneous imaging of two samples is theoretically and experimentally studied using coupled resonators. Our ceramic probe is compared with a compact solenoid probe, the standard probe in ultrahigh‐field magnetic resonance microscopy. Due to low‐loss ceramics and a beneficial distribution of the electric field in a conducting sample, a dual probe containing two samples achieves an SNR enhancement by a factor close to the square root of 2 compared with a solenoid optimized for one sample.

Abstract

openaire: EC/H2020/736937/EU//M-CUBE Radio-frequency (rf) coils are used in all clinical and research magnetic-resonance-imaging (MRI) systems to excite nuclear spins and to receive signals from them. The quality of imaging depends strongly on the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the transmit efficiency of the coils. The birdcage volume coils used in most MRI scanners for homogeneous imaging of a sample are typically shielded from the external systems of the MRI scanner, i.e., the gradient coils, to confine the rf field within the region of interest. However, the near magnetic field of a conventional copper rf shield surrounding a birdcage coil interferes destructively with the primary field of the coil in the sample, which significantly limits the SNR and the transmit efficiency. In the work presented here, we theoretically study and experimentally demonstrate the possibility of creating an artificial magnetic rf shield for a birdcage coil with constructive interference in a sample. This effect is similar to the in-phase reflection of antenna far fields from a magnetic shield but affects the near field in MRI. We build an analytical model of a birdcage coil shielded with a cylindrical impedance boundary and analyze the conditions for increasing the efficiency of the coil by means of the shield. We conclude that by replacing a copper shield with an artificial magnetic one, it is possible to reduce the dissipative intrinsic losses of the coil and increase the power absorbed by the sample, which improves the efficiency. To demonstrate the effect, we perform a detailed numerical simulation and an experiment with a small birdcage in a 7-T F-19 MRI system with a magnetic shield implemented as a periodic cylindrical metal structure with corrugations filled with a ceramic.

Abstract

In this contribution, we present a new radiofrequency probe, a dual dielectric resonator used for transmission and reception of RF signals in Magnetic Resonance Microscopy. The probe is designed as a pair of magnetically coupled ceramic rings with the permittivity of 530 resonating at the Larmor frequency of protons at the magnetic field 17 T (730 MHz). The resonators are made of a unique low-loss ferroelectric composite ceramics, which allows doubling the scanned volume with increased signal-to-noise ratio in comparison to a metal solenoid probe. By adjusting the distance between the resonators and the position of the loop feed placed between them, the probe can be tuned and impedance-matched and does not require capacitors.

Abstract

Magnetic Resonance Microscopy (MRM) is a specialized imaging technique for visualization of samples with tiny structural details with dimensions of less than $100\ \mu \text{m}$ with an extremely high resolution (voxel dimensions are typically less than $100\ \mu \text{m}$ ). However, in practice it is limited by the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the MRM setup and can be insufficient for the required visualization resolution. In order to increase SNR as high as possible, the constant magnetic field B 0 of the MR system should be ultra high (7-21 T). Averaging of obtained images can also improve the SNR, increasing, however the overall scan time. In biomedical applications the scan time is limited by the lifetime of a biological sample. Therefore, any methods to increase SNR for the given B 0 and the scan time are of a great interest in MRM applications.

Abstract

Passive inductive metamaterials have been explored as alternative radio frequency (RF) coils for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with the aim to control and optimize the imaged volume and the sensitivity independently. Nevertheless, such structures result in a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) since the contribution of the loop in the global performance of the coil is reduced. Therefore, the purpose of this work is to explore a new strategy by combining off-resonance metamaterials with a resonant surface coil and observe the advantages that can be obtained. An elementary structure consisting of two parallel off-resonance wires coupled with a resonant surface coil was numerically analyzed. For experimental characterization, a prototype was built and tested in a 7 T MRI scanner for proton (1H) and fluorine (19F) using a phantom. In addition, other coil setups were tested for reference and comparison in terms of $B_{1}^{+}$ magnetic field homogeneity, signal and noise. The results show that with this new strategy a conventional surface coil can be optimized in terms of sensitive volume while maintaining its high SNR. Metamaterials permit a customized adjustment of volume and sensitivity in addition to the simple adaptation to other nuclei, making them beneficial elements in the design of RF coils.

Abstract

Metamaterials are a highly topical field of modern physics that has created new exciting technological opportunities in many areas, including medical imaging and sensor developments. Managing near-field light-matter interactions at a subwavelength scale provides new avenues to develop efficient antennas and detectors. Metamaterials have been proposed as a potential solution to control emission or conversion of light for more than a decade. The Near Zero Index metamaterials have been proposed to design directive emitters. More recently so-called hyperbolic metamaterials have been intensively studied. These structures possess effective permeability or permittivity tensors components such that one principal component is opposite to the two others. With the example of coils for Ultra-High field magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography we will show how medical imaging could benefit from such control of the electromagnetic waves.

Abstract

This paper reports a fishnet hyperbolic metamaterial that mimics the electromagnetic properties of magnetically confined plasma. These electromagnetic properties are strongly anisotropic and different from any conventional material, therefore cannot be mimicked by bulk materials. The structure is made of a stack of thin copper grids spaced by Rohacell foam. We numerically and experimentally show that this kind of structuration matches well the properties of a homogeneous plasma. This solution breaks a long-lasting bottleneck and will accelerate the development of high-frequency heating systems to be used in nuclear fusion.

Abstract

Purpose: To design and test an RF-coil based on two orthogonal eigenmodes in a pair of coupled dipoles, for 7 Tesla body imaging with improved SAR, called dual-mode dipole. Methods: The proposed coil consists of two dipoles and creates two orthogonal field distributions in a sample (the even and odd modes). A coupler used to excite the modes was miniaturized with the conductor track routing technique. Numerical simulations of the dual-mode dipole in the presence of a homogeneous phantom were performed. Moreover, an array of such coils was simulated with a voxel body model. For comparison, a fractionated dipole combined with a surface loop coil was also simulated. Both coils were tested in a 7 Tesla MRI system on a phantom. Subsequently four dual-mode dipoles or dipole/loop combinations were used for a comparison of imaging performance in a human volunteer. Results: Using the even mode of the dual-mode dipole showed 70% SAR reduction in comparison to the fractionated dipole while having the same (Formula presented.) in the prostate region. The odd mode of the dual-mode dipole showed a performance comparable to the surface loop both for SAR and B1 efficiency. The obtained results showed that the proposed coil while creating lower SAR gave images of the same quality as the reference coil. Conclusions: It was demonstrated that the array of dual-mode dipoles provided the same SNR and prostate imaging quality as the reference array, while demonstrating lower SAR. This is due to a smoother current distribution over a sample surface.

Abstract

In this work we demonstrate a comparative study of the a new proposed coil based on periodic capacitively-loaded thin wires and a conventional loop coil both optimized for small-animal imaging applications at 7 Tesla. The proposed coil uses hybridized eigenmodes of the flat periodic array comprising a number of thin metal wires, excited by a small non-resonant loop. Tunability of the proposed coil within the desired frequency range is ensured by the structural distributed capacity implemented as a PCB attached to the ends of all the wires. The proposed coil was compared to the conventional loop coil with lumped capacitors by numerical simulations. Quantitative comparison has been done in terms of B+ 1 per square root of accepted power efficiency as well as the loaded Q-factor. Up to 42 % improvement of the transmit efficiency has been demonstrated over the conventional loop coil in a homogeneous phantom.

International audience; We propose the dual-tuned volume coil for magnetic resonance imaging at two nuclei. This coil is based on the combination of two independent metasurfaces that can be used simultaneously for fluorine and hydrogen 19 F / 1 H imaging at 7 Tesla for small animals. Each metasurface is made of non-magnetic metallic rods and structural capacities of etched metal strips. The geometry is chosen so that two modes supported by the two metasurfaces resonate at the required frequencies 282.6/300.1 MHz. The two metasurfaces can be tuned independently by mechanically adjusting the length of the two sets of wires. We have numerically studied the concept of the proposed dual-tuned coil.

Abstract

Metamaterials are artificial structures consisting of periodic sub-wavelength elements, they produce a particular electromagnetic response which often cannot be obtained from conventional media. One class of metamaterials called hyperbolic metamaterials (HMM) is widely studied nowadays due to their various applications such as subwavelength imaging and local density of states engineering. 1 In this work, HMM consisting of alternating gold, copper, and niobium pentoxide layers was designed and fabricated with plasma assisted electron beam deposition technique. For the accurate description of this material opto-geometrical parameters of thin layers composing it were determined separately using reflection and transmission measurements. Afterward, the produced material was structured using focused ion beam milling and its influence on the Alexa Fluor 647 biomolecules spontaneous emission was studied experimentally with fluorescence correlation spectroscopy and time-correlated single photon counting techniques. Combining these techniques enable the measurement of the fluorescence lifetime reduction together with the brightness enhancement per molecule. The same measurements were previously done for the structured gold films 3 which let us compare the results. HMM has shown significant emission enhancement compatible with the one produced by a single gold aperture which is known for its good plasmonic properties.

Abstract

In this contribution we propose and study numerically a new probe (radiofrequency coil) for magnetic resonance mi-croscopy in the field of 17T. The probe is based on two coupled donut resonators made of a high-permittivity and low-loss ceramics excited by a non-resonant inductively coupled loop attached to a coaxial cable. By full-wave numerical simulation it was shown that the probe can be precisely tuned to the Larmor frequency of protons (723 MHz) by adjusting a gap between the two resonators. Moreover, the impedance of the probe can be matched by varying the distance from one of the resonators to the loop. As a result, a compact and mechanically tunable resonant probe was demonstrated for 17 Tesla applications using no lumped capacitors for tuning and matching. The new probe was numerically compared to a conventional solenoidal probe showing better efficiency.

Abstract

In this contribution we propose a novel antenna design (so-called radio-frequency coil) for magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy (MRSI). The design is based on a dual-layer periodic structure of thin metal wires inspired by wire medium resonators. Extremities of selected wires are paired by connection through a structural capacity to ensure electrically small dimensions of the coil and suitability for preclinical and clinical MRSI. The wire structure supports multiple hybridized eigenmodes, which fall into two independent classes with mutually orthogonal field polarization. By numerical simulation we have shown that exciting one eigen-mode from both of the two classes one can design a practical dual-frequency MRSI coil with the unique combination of a distributed self-resonant structure and independent tunability at two operational frequencies. Electromagnetic properties of the proposed coil have been compared to those from a conventional double-tuned coil using numerical simulations with a homogeneous phantom representing a scanned sample.

Abstract

In this contribution we discuss the application of periodic structures composed of resonant metal strips in radio-frequency coils for preclinical multi-nuclei magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). For these multi-wire structures we numerically demonstrate a variety of hybridized eigenmodes calculating their magnetic field patterns and discuss their selective excitation. We show that by properly exciting two particular eigenmodes with a small non-resonant loop feed one can construct a dual-frequency coil for MRI. The field of view of the coil at both frequencies is determined by the magnetic field patterns of the selected modes, as shown by full-wave numerical simulations. The choice of the excited eigenmodes determines the field penetration depths into a scanned subject at the corresponding resonant frequencies. Moreover, in this work we discuss miniaturization of multi-wire resonators by capacitive loading of strips.

Abstract

An anatomically realistic human head phantom was elaborated for different Larmor frequencies, which allows rapid quantification of B 1 + of MRIs of different magnetic fields. The permittivity e' and conductivity σ of sucrose/salt/agar aqueous solutions of varying concentration was determined; a solution with these components and having the adequate concentration to obtain the brain's dielectric properties at 3 T, 7T and 11.7T was manufactured. An anthropomorphic polymeric skull was filled with this mixture. To check the behavior of this phantom in a MRI configuration, both numerical and experimental validations were done: a B 1 + field distribution inside the phantom was calculated with CST Microwave Studio inside a birdcage coil at 7T; the same mapping was assessed in a 7T MRI. This work has shown the possibility of manufacturing a head phantom with accessible and cheap components for MRI evaluation, having an adequate B 1 + field distribution and the dielectric properties of the human brain at several frequencies of interest.

The purpose of this study was to fabricate and test a multi-frequency human brain-mimicking phantom for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) assessment purposes. An anatomically realistic human head phantom was elaborated, for different Larmor frequencies, which allows rapid quantification of $${\text{B}}_{1}^{ + }$$ . It is a simple alternative solution in time and cost as compared to numerical simulations to validate simulation when the coil geometry and components cannot be known as a unique solution. The permittivity $$\varepsilon^{{\prime }}$$ and conductivity $$\sigma$$ of sucrose/salt/agar aqueous solutions of varying concentrations were determined; a solution with these components and having the adequate concentration to obtain the brain’s dielectric properties at 3, 7 and 11.7T was manufactured. An anthropomorphic polymeric skull was filled with this mixture. To check the behavior of this phantom in a MRI configuration, both numerical and experimental validations were done: a $${\text{B}}_{1}^{ + }$$ field distribution inside the phantom was calculated with CST Microwave Studio inside a birdcage coil at 7T; the same mapping was assessed in a 7T MRI. The feasibility of a multi-MRI static field phantom was demonstrated. A solution composed by 54.7 wt% of sucrose, 3.1 wt% of salt and 3.1 wt% of agar was fabricated with good permittivity and conductivity matching for 3, 7 and 11.7T. The results were confirmed by both numerical simulation and MRI acquisition. This work has shown the possibility of manufacturing a head phantom with accessible and cheap components for MRI evaluation, having an adequate $${\text{B}}_{1}^{ + }$$ field distribution and the dielectric properties of the human brain.

Abstract

We determine, experimentally and numerically, the electric and magnetic Purcell factors in a fishnet metamaterial in the frequency range 5--15 GHz by measuring the impedance of a dipole antenna. We compare measurements and numerical simulations of the Purcell factor for transverse electric (${\mathrm{TE}}_{\mathrm{z}}$) and transverse magnetic (${\mathrm{TM}}_{\mathrm{z}}$) polarizations. For ${\mathrm{TM}}_{\mathrm{z}}$ polarization, the dispersion relation of the structure is hyperbolic and enhances the Purcell factor. For ${\mathrm{TE}}_{\mathrm{z}}$ polarization, the dispersion relation does not allow any propagating solutions and decreases the Purcell factor below the effective plasma frequency. Eigenmode calculations of the periodic unit cell of the metamaterial are used to obtain the band structure and confirm the presence of hyperbolic isofrequency surfaces. The isofrequency surfaces are used to calculate the density of states (DOS). We also use the impedance method to obtain the DOS by averaging the Purcell factor obtained at different locations over the periodic unit cell and find good agreement with DOS calculated from eigenmode calculations.

Abstract

Chemical etching via alkaline solutions is associated with electronic lithography to structure at a nanometer scale silicon Mie resonators. Two different alkaline solutions are employed and their infl uences on the shape of the resonators are discussed. The method is applied on both amorphous and crystalline silicon coatings and silicon resonators are characterized by electron microscopy and optical spectroscopy, and then the different modes are identifi ed thanks to numerical simulations. This method avoids the use of reactive ion etching and appears to be very well adapted to design silicon particles at a nanometer scale for applications in nanophotonics.

Abstract

In this paper, a multiband flexible antenna is presented. This antenna was realized on a flexible substrate in order to realize a deployable system for a distress beacon. We used the concept of open-sleeve antenna to change a quadrupole mode into a dipole mode. The main radiating element of the antenna is a dual-band folded U-shaped antenna. The operating frequencies of this antenna are studied depending on the length of the parasitic elements. In order to understand the matching and the radiation patterns in far field of both antennas (U-shaped and open-sleeve), their magnetic behaviors in near field are studied in simulation and in measurement. The simulated and measured radiation patterns are also presented to check the study in near field.

Abstract

We demonstrate experimentally and theoretically that a local excitation of a single scatterer of relative dielectric permittivity {\epsilon} = 6 permits to excite broad dipolar and quadrupolar electric and magnetic resonances that shape the emission pattern in an un- precedented way. By suitably positioning the feed with respect to the sphere at a ?=3 distance, this compact antenna is able to spectrally sort the electromagnetic emission ei- ther in the forward or in the backward direction, together with a high gain in directivity. Materials with {\epsilon} = 6 can be found in the whole spectrum of frequencies promising Mie antennas to become an enabling technology in numbers of applications, ranging from quantum single photon sources to telecommunications.

Abstract

Selective A; International audience; IEEE 802.15.4 defines a popular MAC standard for wireless sensor and actuator networks. With the default parameters, under medium to high load, 802.15.4 generates excessive collisions and packet losses. Low duty cycles even exacerbate the problem, because more nodes become active after long periods of sleep and contend for channel access. In this paper, we have applied the models that led to the Idle Sense access method for 802.11 to the 802.15.4 slotted CSMA/CA, taking into account the central role of the coordinator and also the bursty nature of the traffic. Surprisingly, the approach perfectly applies to 802.15.4 even if the principles of the two access methods fundamentally differ. Based on the model, we propose ABE, an adaptation method that adjusts the contention window to optimal values so that the network obtains high throughput along with low duty cycles leading to low energy consumption. The method converges to near-optimal backoff values even under bursty traffic and for any number of contending nodes.; no abstract

Abstract

We present a study on the optical properties of metamaterial layers containing U-shaped resonators with resonances in the near infrared. We show that the description of the optical properties requires taking into account permittivity, permeability, and chirality tensors. The elements of these tensors were tentatively attributed to surface plasmon resonances of the arms, magnetoelectric coupling, and spatial dispersion. We show that measurements of the Mueller matrix of the sample in appropriately chosen conditions allow unambiguous discrimination of the contribution of the different elements of the tensors to the optical properties of the metamaterial. Emphasis is put on the description of transfers of polarization and symmetries among the Mueller matrix elements. The findings of the theoretical part are confirmed by spectroscopic ellipsometric measurements made on this sample. The spectral dispersion of the different elements of permittivity, permeability, and chirality, modeled using oscillators with Lorentzian line shape, allows correct adjustment of measurements.
