The emergence of Internet, the Web and e-mail technologies has rendered modems essential for everybody. In terms of speed, the latest 'standard' is 56 Kbps, which actually comes in two versions: one, called K56flex, is produced by Rockwell; and the other, called x2, is made by 3Com. An overall standard called v.90, announced in 1998, can usually be made to work with both. Modems should include 14.4 Kbps and 9.6 Kbps faxing capabilities.
