This paper explores the intersection between migration, aging and lifelong learning with the aim of expanding our understanding of how lifelong learning enhances older migrants' active aging in a foreign land. Our study also offers insights into the learning activities of older immigrants in general. In 2002, the World Health Organization (WHO) proposed a conceptual framework of active aging, which has greatly influenced aging policies and seniors' everyday practices. Yet, there is a paucity of research that explicates and fully integrates lifelong learning into active aging discourse, and focuses on senior immigrants' lifelong learning in an aging society. Based on interviews, textual materials, and participatory observation in five Chinese seniors' immigrant associations in Toronto, we explore how Chinese senior immigrants' learning has been (re)shaped and practised through re-settling in Canadian society. Five categories of learning are explored, including a) learning language and computer skills, b) learning culture and history, c) learning civic engagement, d) learning leisure, and e) learning health. We argue that 'active learning' can be used as a dynamic conceptual framework that interacts with active aging theory, demonstrating how senior immigrants actively participate in the lifelong learning project for participation and integration in Canada. This paper provides insights to the understanding of culturally sensitive policy-making on integration, health, and lifelong learning of older immigrants in Canada and beyond.

Purpose: The declining participation of young American females in computing fields negatively impacts diversity in the computing-related workforce. While computing in China is also dominated by men, career prospects are positively perceived by Chinese women. The purpose of this paper is to investigate both countries' female gender perceptions toward computing and two influencing psychological factors, computer anxiety and computer self-efficacy (CSE). To better understand American females' perception toward computing, these factors are compared to those of Chinese women. Design/methodology/approach: The paper tried to understand gender perception toward computing, which is believed to be one factor influencing female participation in computing. The paper examined 137 American female students and 145 Chinese female students. All students were non-IT-related business majors. The survey contained the following scales: gender typing scale, CSE scale, and computer anxiety rating scale. The paper used the model comparison technique in structural equation modeling to develop the proposed model demonstrating the relationship among the three psychological factors. Findings: It is found that American females perceive that computing is for females, but Chinese females perceive that computing is for both males and females. Computer anxiety has a direct influence on gender perception toward computing for both groups. CSE, however, does not have a direct influence on gender perception toward computing for both groups. CSE also has a direct relationship with computer anxiety. The extent to which each factor influences other factors is different between both groups and this reveals interesting implications. Social implications: The authors believe that to properly encourage female participation in computing, it is important to emphasize two areas in education. In order to lower computer anxiety and increase CSE, educators need to promote basic computer skills and provide a fundamental knowledge of computers and information technologies. A more positive perception by females could be created through a stronger awareness of female roles in computing. Classroom discussions including more examples of positive female role models in computing is necessary. Female professionals need to support each other and encourage young females to pursue computing-related education fields and careers. Originality/value: There is an important need to understand the decline of American female participation in computing. Few researchers have investigated gender perception toward computing with computer anxiety and CSE. Furthermore, a model explaining the relationship of the three factors previously had not been presented. This paper not only investigated how computer anxiety and CSE influences gender perception toward computing, but also compared these results between American and Chinese females. This paper empirically examines the impact of academic research on high-tech manufacturing growth of 28 Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and emerging countries over the 1991-2005 period. A standard research and development (R&D) expenditure based measure is found to be too general to capture the input in high-tech research. To overcome this problem, a novel proxy for high-tech research investment--the supercomputer capacity--is proposed. Empirical evidence strongly supports this choice of variable. It is also found that academic R&D exerts a larger growth effect on high-tech output than its industry and government counterparts, but only the impact differential between academic and government R&D is statistically significant.

Experts agree that computers and computing play an important role in education. Since the 1980s there has been a debate about gender as it relates to computers and education. However, results regarding gender differences concerning computer use in education are not consistent. In particular there is little work done in China on this issue. Therefore, the overall goal of this paper is to demonstrate whether girls and boys can gain equally from computer-based education in China's elementary schools. To do so we analyze results from three randomized field experiments of a Computer Assisted Learning (CAL) program and One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) program. The field experiments are carried out in three kinds of schools: Shannxi rural public schools; Qinghai minority public schools; and Beijing migrant schools. Although CAL and OLPC have been considered cost effective means to improve learning outcomes, it is not known whether the programs impact girls differently than boys. Our analysis shows that, in fact, there were no differences between female and male students in either the improvement in standardized math test scores or Chinese test scores with either the CAL or OLPC programs. Our study suggests that among disadvantaged students in China's rural areas and migrant communities, there is reason to believe that computer based learning can benefit both girls and boys equally. This finding has possible implications for China's ongoing efforts to integrate computers and computing technologies into the nation's underserved schools. (Contains 7 tables.)

Research into learning technology has developed a reputation for being driven by rhetoric about the revolutionary nature of new developments, for paying scant attention to theories that might be used to frame and inform research, and for producing shallow analyses that do little to inform the practice of education. Although there is theoretically-informed research in learning technology, this is in the minority, and has been actively marginalised by calls for applied design work. This limits opportunities to advance knowledge in the field. Using three examples, alternative ways to engage with theory are identified. The paper concludes by calling for greater engagement with theory, and the development of a scholarship of learning technology, in order to enrich practice within the field and demonstrate its relevance to other fields of work.

This paper reviews research on Hong Kong's music education. The review shows that music education in Hong Kong after the change of sovereignty in 1997 differs from that in the People's Republic of China; there is an emphasis on western classical music rather than the traditional Chinese music in the classroom, with a disconnection between what students enjoy after school and the music they hear and sing in school; composing is the least taught aspect of music; and a more student-centred approach catering more for children's interest is recommended. The findings also show that computers have encouraged motivation and creativity while complementing listening and performing. Constant development has occurred in teacher education, while teachers' understanding of children's musical development and their ways of thinking about music can help their teaching effectiveness. This review also suggests the need for further scholarly study into the effects of a curriculum that is more balanced between western and Chinese music and effective ways of teaching Chinese music, the teaching of music creativity, including the integration of technology and less rigid systems of teaching and learning to promote children enjoyment in music learning.

Chinese companies in the computer and telecommunications sectors have been able to climb the value-added chain and become more innovative and globally competitive in part due to their ability to access global technology supply chains, many with a heavy US company presence. China's globally active players in these sectors are reliant to some degree on US technology inputs that have now been put in jeopardy by the increasing willingness of the US government to target Chinese firms, and weaponize US company dominance of key supply chains such as software, semiconductors, and semiconductor manufacturing equipment. This paper examines prospects for Chinese companies to continue to innovate and compete globally in the computer and telecommunications sectors given the worsening geopolitical tensions centering on the technology sector. The widespread use of the Internet of Things (Iot) makes it possible to connect everything but having enough IP addresses is a fundamental requirement of this paradigm. All previous environmental monitoring systems in China are based on IPv4. In combination with the characteristics and requirements of China's atmospheric environment monitoring system, this paper develops a monitoring system based on IPv6 technology. Users can directly access the monitoring equipment through the IPv6 website to view data and configure operations. This paper first introduces the design and implementation of the software and hardware of the system, then introduces the simplification of IPv6 protocol, the transplantation of IPv6 protocol on ARM and the design and implementation of embedded Web server system. The experimental results show that the developed atmospheric environment monitoring system can realize continuous data acquisition based on IPv6 and provide data-driven support for environmental protection management and decision-making., (© 2022. Landslides are one of the main geological disasters in the riparian zone of the Three Gorges Reservoir Area (TGRA) in China, causing massive losses in terms of industrial and agricultural production and people's lives and property. Due to the difficulty of data collection and lack of facade information, the remote sensing methods currently used for landslide mapping and detection are insufficient. The current landslide information acquisition method is mainly based on visual interpretation and automatic computer classification from aerial orthophotographs, which is subjective and time-consuming and yields low accuracy. New shipborne photogrammetry has unique advantages in small and steep slope landslide detection. In recent years, the deep learning technology represented by convolutional neural networks (CNNs) exhibits more powerful feature learning ability in image recognition than traditional machine learning technology. Meanwhile, transfer learning can make the network suitable for small datasets through fine-tuning, which could transfer the parameters of the pretrained model to the new model in a certain way, thereby increasing the learning efficiency of the model. In this paper, the training of multiple deep learning models is realized through transfer learning, and automatic identification of landslides based on shipborne images is achieved through decision-level fusion. The experimental results show that through the integration of decision-level fusion and transfer learning, it performs well in the classification of landslides based on shipborne images. At present, percutaneous nephrolithotomy has become an option for hospitals increasingly to treat calculus. However, due to the certain risk of percutaneous nephrolithotomy, it may lead to postoperative complications. Analyzing the preoperative factors of septic shock after percutaneous nephrolithotomy can provide guidance for reducing the incidence of septic shock after PCNL. This article establishes a logistic regression model based on preoperative factors, uses statistical methods, and uses the professional statistical software SPSS to create a database and analyze the data. The method of classification data analysis was used to determine various influencing factors including patient factors, stone factor, and preoperative factors and combined B-ultrasound guidance and percutaneous nephrolithotomy to reduce the risk of surgery. The experimental results found that the percutaneous nephroscope laser lithotripsy guided by the smart Internet of Things can effectively perform lithotripsy; in this paper, the preoperative data of different complications are obtained, and the risk of surgery is closely related to the operation time. The operation time exceeds 90 minutes and causes the risk of severe bleeding after PCNL. It is twice the operation time of less than 90 minutes and 5 times the operation time of less than 60 minutes. Due to the influence of regional climatic conditions, the development of cold ecological tourism agricultural park in the north is slow, its landscape planning and design research lags behind, and there are still some problems. With the development of electronic computers, the previously unachievable optimization of engineering structures is now possible, while the traditional optimization methods cannot meet the requirements of modern computing due to the implementation constraints. The emergence of algo for group intelligences has made some applications of engineering structural optimization possible. Group intelligence is the characteristic of a system in which the collective behavior of low-level individuals interacting locally with their environment forms an overall pattern of consistent functions. This paper presents a study of energy-efficient cold landscape design based on algo for group intelligences and analyzes the problems that arise in the ecological landscape design of cold urban settlements. Then countermeasures are proposed to solve the problems. The linear model is replaced by the determination of the weight of the evaluation index of the energy-saving design of frozen landscape. And take it as a new migration model. Then, based on the weight of the evaluation index, the group algorithm analysis in landscape design is proposed, which is a generalized definition of the standard model. The experimental results show that the algo for group intelligence outperforms another algorithm in terms of solving ability to the extent that the average optimization ability is improved by 13.45%, so the algo for group intelligence demonstrates its superior ability to take into account both local and global search. Therefore, the use of algo for group intelligences to build an energy-efficient society is a necessary path for China's development, and the construction of energy-efficient gardens is an important part of building an energy-efficient society, and the application of energy-efficient concepts to modern landscape design is an inevitable trend in the development of urban landscaping. Purpose: Given advances in digitalization and automation, manufacturing employees are facing the increasing threat of being substituted by smart machines and robots. The purpose of this paper is to propose a framework that explains as well as can be used to study career sustainability of workers in the fast-paced, continuously changing manufacturing landscape. Design/methodology/approach: After tracing the evolution of manufacturing sector in China, the authors review existing literature on career sustainability and then propose a new framework. The authors then describe two fictive cases and illustrate the applicability of the four-dimensional framework in helping understand the lived experience of objects in these fictive cases. Findings: The proposed dynamic framework of career sustainability constituted by four intricately interconnected dimensions (i.e. resourceful, flexible, renewable and integrative) is useful in understanding the fictive cases and hopefully will guide future research on career sustainability in manufacturing or similarly fast-past, dynamically changing environments. Practical implications: The framework of career sustainability facilitates manufacturing employees to accurately evaluate the sustainability of their careers, whereby they can choose to continue, shift or re-orient their career paths during the transitional period toward digitalized manufacturing; it also enlightens employers to think about how to enhance the job security and engagement of workers by helping prolong their careers and re-design their career plans. Over the past decade, the call to foster computational thinking (CT) in every child has received considerable attention. However, there is little understanding of whether children are developmentally ready to think computationally and what specific CT concepts and skills can be developed at various ages. This study explored the developmental and gender differences in CT skills of 197 Grade 4–6 students (aged 9–13) before being exposed to instruction and investigated the age–gender interaction effects on their CT acquisition in an intervention combining both programming and non‐programming (unplugged) activities. Results show that students' CT skills followed a developmental progression before instruction. Gender difference across ages was insignificant in conditionals, logical operators, pattern recognition and generalization skills. Additionally, students of different ages developed CT differently during the intervention, and their CT acquisition was unaffected by gender. Implications for practice and research in CT education were discussed. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to explore the impact of using computers to obtain information on the farm household's production and consumption based on a field survey of farm households in the northern China. Design/methodology/approach: The most important methods applied are instrumental variable (IV) method and propensity score matching (PSM) method. Estimators of IV, PSM and nearest neighborhood matching approaches are considered together to check the robustness of empirical results. Findings: This paper careful impact evaluation results suggest that the use of computer not only improves the size of arable land rented in but also reduces family labor input intensity and the probability of selling agricultural outputs at farm-gate markets. Moreover, it also stimulates transportation, garment, housing and insurance expenditures per capita. Research limitations/implications: The database of this research comprises cross-section data, which does not support a cross-time comparison. Practical implications: These results imply that it is vital to expand the coverage of computer use in rural areas. This may suggest that the importance of improving computer access is crucial for stimulating rural consumption increase. Furthermore, the need for the expansion of internet network coverage in western areas is also of importance. Originality/value: First, the authors directly estimate computer usage impacts on a broader range of production and consumption indicators by including land-relative investments, variable investments, labor input and household's expenditure and provide rigorous impact evaluations on the impact of access to computer. Second, the authors use IV and PSM methods to correct self-selection bias, going beyond the single equation approach in other studies. It utilizes actual data rather than data modified by utilizing methods that can deal with zeros in the outputs. Computational thinking (CT), the ability to devise computational solutions for real‐life problems, has received growing attention from both educators and researchers. To better improve university students' CT competence, collaborative programming is regarded as an effective learning approach. However, how novice programmers develop CT competence through collaborative problem solving remains unclear. This study adopted an innovative approach, quantitative ethnography, to analyze the collaborative programming activities of a high‐performing and a low‐performing team. Both the discourse analysis and epistemic network models revealed that across concepts, practices, and identity, the high‐performing team exhibited CT that was systematic, whereas the CT of the low‐performing team was characterized by tinkering or guess‐and‐check approaches. However, the low‐performing group's CT development trajectory ultimately converged towards the high‐performing group's. This study thus improves understanding of how novices learn CT, and it illustrates a useful method for modeling CT based in authentic problem‐solving contexts. This paper addresses key barriers to implementing a clinical information system (CIS) in a Hong Kong nursing home setting, from a healthcare specific socio-technical perspective. Data was collected through field observations ( n = 12) and semi-structured individual interviews ( n = 18) of CIS stakeholders in a Hong Kong nursing home, and analyzed using the immersion/crystallization approach. Complex interactions relevant to our case were contextualized and interpreted within the perspective of the Sittig-Singh Healthcare Socio-Technical Framework (HSTF). Three broad clusters of implementation barriers from the eight HSTF dimensions were identified: (a) Infrastructure-based barriers, which relate to conflict between government regulations and system functional needs of users; lack of financial support; inconsistency between workflow, work policy, and procedures; and inadequacy of hardware-software infrastructural and technical support; (b) Process-based barriers, which relate to mismatch between the technology, existing work practice and workflow, and communication; low system speed, accessibility, and stability; deficient computer literacy; more experience in health care profession; clinical content inadequacy and unavailability; as well as poor system usefulness and user interface design; and (c) Outcome-based barriers, which relate to the lack of measurement and monitoring of system effectiveness. Two additional dimensions underlining the importance of the ability of a CIS to change are proposed to extend the Sittig-Singh HSTF. First, advocacy would promote the articulation and influence of changes in the system and subsequent outcomes by CIS stakeholders, and second, adaptability would ensure the ability of the system to adjust to emerging needs. Society is becoming increasingly image based. As individuals regularly record moments both mundane and momentous, images potentially lose or gain power to communicate important information. Social work scholars have argued that social work should incorporate images into both interventions (Chapman and Hall, 2016; Chapman et al., 2014) and research (Marshal et al., 2009). A recent review provides an overview of visual methodologies in social work (Clark and Morriss, 2015). The most popular means of doing this has been through the incorporation of Photovoice (Wang and Burris, 1997) into the social work research repertoire. Yet, in Photovoice, although images are central, text remains the unit of analysis. This paper aims to augment the existing literature in social work by focusing on ways in which images can be data in and of themselves and how image-based data interact with text-based data. We will begin with ethical considerations, proceed to step-by-step instructions for coding and analyzing image-based data in ATLAS.ti, and finally discuss interpretation. Purpose — The paper seeks to identify the sources of confusion in the Chinese personal computer market and the confusion reduction strategies used. Design/methodology/approach — A self-completion questionnaire with a sample of 140 respondents was used. Findings — Technological complexity is the major source of confusion. Word of mouth is the most common source of information used to reduce confusion due to its credibility and reliability. Practical implications — Technical confusion leads to similarity confusion and overchoice confusion. Manufacturers and retailers need to address technical confusion to reduce the overall level of confusion in the PC market. The article reports that MEDINFO 89, the sixth world congress on computers in medicine, will take place in Beijing, China, in October 16-20, 1989. Numerous sessions will be conducted simultaneously, and the congress will appeal to both beginners and experts in medical computing. The program will be comprised of presentations of research papers, descriptive papers, opinion and review papers, and will include demonstrations, workshops, tutorials, a software exchange and exhibits. The research presented in this paper shows that Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) issues associated with home appliances, such as TV sets, refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners, and personal computers, are linked in the WEEE flow and recycling systems and are important to matters of public policy and regulation. In this paper, the sources and generation of WEEE in China are identified, and WEEE volumes are calculated. The results show that recycling capacity must increase if the rising quantity of domestic WEEE is to be handled properly. Simultaneously, suitable WEEE treatment will generate large volumes of secondary resources. Environmental problems caused by the existing recycling processes have been investigated in a case study. Problems mainly stem from open burning of plastic-metal parts and from precious metals leaching techniques that utilize acids. The existing WEEE flow at the national level was investigated and described. It became obvious that a considerable amount of obsolete items are stored in homes and offices and have not yet entered the recycling system. The reuse of used appliances has become a high priority for WEEE collectors and dealers because reuse generates higher economic profits than simple material recovery. The results of a cost analysis of WEEE flow shows that management and collection costs significantly influence current WEEE management. Heated discussions are ongoing in political and administrative bodies as to whether extended producer responsibilities policies are promoting WEEE recycling and management. This paper also discusses future challenges and strategies for WEEE management in China.

With the continuous development of computer vision technology, more and more landslide identification detection tasks have started to shift from manual visual interpretation to automatic computer identification, and automatic landslide detection methods based on remote sensing satellite images and deep learning have been gradually developed. However, most existing algorithms often have the problem of low precision and weak generalization in landslide detection. Based on the Google Earth Engine platform, this study selected landslide image data from 24 study areas in China and established the DN landslide sample dataset, which contains a total of 1440 landslide samples. The original YOLOv7 algorithm model was improved and optimized by applying the SE squeezed attention mechanism and VariFocal loss function to construct the SE-YOLOv7 model to realize the automatic detection of landslides in remote sensing images. The experimental results show that the mAP, Precision value, Recall value, and F1-Score of the improved SE-YOLOv7 model for landslide identification are 91.15%, 93.35%, 94.54%, and 93.94%, respectively. At the same time, through a field investigation and verification study in Qianyang County, Baoji City, Shaanxi Province, comparing the detection results of SE-YOLOv7, it is concluded that the improved SE-YOLOv7 can locate the landslide location more accurately, detect the landslide range more accurately, and have fewer missed detections. The research results show that the algorithm model has strong detection accuracy for many types of landslide image data, which provides a technical reference for future research on landslide detection based on remote sensing images. In order to provide resilient position, navigation, and time (PNT) information for E-Navigation, the ranging-mode (R-Mode) positioning using automatic identification system (AIS) signals is encouraged. As the accuracy is the key for the positioning system, this paper investigates the position error of the R-Mode positioning based on AIS shore-based station in China. The measurement errors of Gaussian filtered minimum shift keying (GMSK) demodulation based on carrier phase locking loop are investigated in theory. The dilution of precision (DOP) for time of arrival (TOA) and time difference of arrival (TDOA) used in R-Mode positioning of AIS is discussed in two measurement mechanisms. The positioning error distributions in the North, East, and South Sea regions of China based on the existing AIS shore-based stations are evaluated. Owing to the current development trend of globalization and informatization, traditional transportation technologies and means can no longer meet the needs of economic and social development. Thus, intelligent transportation will be an inevitable and revolutionary choice for the development of the transportation industry. As a subsystem of the intelligent transportation system, the electronic nonstop toll collection (ETC) system provides a good solution to the problems of traffic congestion, environmental pollution, energy consumption, and low toll operation efficiency caused by expressway toll collection. This high-technology system is utilized in many fields, such as radio communication and computer and automatic control in the transportation field. China's expressway ETC systems have evident effects on congestion reduction at toll stations. Although the advantages of ETC lanes are significant, and China actively implements ETC-handling policies, some drivers are reluctant to install ETC on-board systems or they have negative experiences after handling them. According to a survey, existing literature lacks research on the factors affecting user satisfaction with ETC. On the basis of the questionnaire data of ETC user experience in Shanghai and Beijing, we comprehensively investigate the reasons of banking, ETC equipment, and drivers' personal factors and travel characteristics to establish an ordinal logistics model. Through cluster analysis, drivers in the two cities are divided into three groups, and the significance of related variables is further analyzed. This research can help us understand the degree of influence of different factors on user satisfaction with ETC to a certain extent. At present, the pressure on China's economic development is increasing day by day due to the profound changes in the internal and external environment. The global economic pattern is undergoing significant changes in terms of the external environment. Adjusting and optimizing the industrial structure will aid in achieving the goal of facilitating transformation through steady growth in the short term. Meanwhile, it will also accelerate sustainable economic development. In this study, the relevant theories of industrial structure optimization are described based on the impact of wireless mobile networks and the Internet of things (IoT) industry. Based on the gray correlation degree, the high- and new-tech industries under the development of the IoT industry are analyzed and the impact of optimization of the high- and new-tech industry structure is investigated. The results show that the development of the IoT industry has driven the development of the high- and new-tech industry. The gray correlation between the development of the IoT industry and the high- and new-tech industry obtained is 0.64, indicating a strong correlation. The average output share of the electronic computer and office equipment manufacturing industries is 47.09%. The average output ratio of the industrial structure optimization of the electronics and communication manufacturing industry is 42.55%. Moreover, the proportion of the output of medical manufacturing and medical equipment and instrument manufacturing industrial structure optimization is small, 15.63% and 10.54%, respectively. The results have significant value in the research on the impact of the development of the IoT industry on the high- and new-tech industry under the wireless mobile network and the effect of its industrial structure optimization. Abstract: Drawing upon researches in marketing and psychology, the present investigation examines empirically the intermediate psychological process that would explain how and why forced use affects satisfaction and behavioral intentions with self-service technologies. A non-internet self-service technology setting serviced as the study context. This study tested the research model and relevant hypotheses with survey responses collected from 290 users of self-service technology in China. Results indicate that technology anxiety and technology trust are the two intermediate psychological constructs through which forced use affects satisfaction and behavioral intentions with self-service technologies. This paper sheds some additional light on the relationship among forced use, technology anxiety, technology trust, customer satisfaction, and behavioral intentions in self-service technology setting. The University Computer Foundation (UCF) course, which is a compulsory theoretical course for freshmen, especially science and engineering department students, lays the foundation for more advanced courses. However, the UCF course covers a wide variety of concepts, including the computer hardware, which are difficult for freshmen to comprehend. In recent years, virtual reality (VR) has become prevalent in many educational settings. To improve the teaching of the UCF course, we developed a VR program about introductory computer hardware and invited freshmen from two universities in China to take part in the experiment as participants. Four aspects of computer contents, namely the evolutionary history of computers, the computer components, the computer assembly, and the workflow of computer hardware, are displayed in the program. During the experiment, students' behavioral data were recorded. Then, the data were analyzed and the reasons were speculated for the differences among groups of various categories. From the experiment, the relationships between the students' behavior and their groups were found, and we demonstrated that our VR program is effective at attracting the students' curiosity and increasing their understanding of computer hardware in the UCF course. Computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM) technology has been used in China for over ten years. Some striking achievements have been obtained, but there still exist a few difficulties or problems. This paper describes the benefits and problems experienced by a number of CIM enterprises in China based on the results of a series of industrial field surveys. The strong common commitment to CIM technology of the top management of these enterprises has been accompanied by great emphasis on education and training of employees, and received financial support from the government and technological support from universities. We noted that many of the problems are the result of management development lagging behind technology advancement, outdated organizational structure being unable to adapt to the needs of technology development and market economic environment, improper and inadequate use of human resources and lack of business-led CIM strategy. Yield estimation is an essential preharvest practice among most large-scale farming companies, since it enables the predetermination of essential logistics to be allocated (i.e., transportation means, supplies, labor force, among others). An overestimation may thus incur further costs, whereas an underestimation entails potential crop waste. More interestingly, an accurate yield estimation enables stakeholders to better place themselves in the market. Yet, computer-aided precision farming is set to play a pivotal role in this respect. Kiwifruit represents a major produce in several countries (e.g., Italy, China, New and Zealand). However, up to date, the relevant literature remains short of a complete as well as automatic system for kiwifruit yield estimation. In this paper, we present a fully automatic and noninvasive computer vision system for kiwifruit yield estimation across a given orchard. It consists mainly of an optical sensor mounted on a minitractor that surveys the orchard of interest at a low pace. Afterwards, the acquired images are fed to a pipeline that incorporates image preprocessing, stitching, and fruit counting stages and outputs an estimated fruit count and yield estimation. Experimental results conducted on two large kiwifruit orchards confirm a high plausibility (i.e., errors of 6% and 15%) of the proposed system. The proposed yield estimation solution has been in commercial use for about 2 years. With respect to the traditional manual yield estimation carried out by kiwifruit companies, it was demonstrated to save a significant amount of time and cut down on estimation errors, especially when speaking of large-scale farming. Unmanned aerial vehicle is a typical field robot which can work in many unstructured environments like mines, forests, and even radiation areas. In our mine monitoring system built in a northeast province of China, special designed unmanned aerial vehicle is applied to take photos and perceive the environment. We select a series of image-based techniques to process aerial pictures to monitor the slope. The visual features are initially refined by histogram equalization. Then, the rocks and cracks can be detected by different digital image processing operators, like Canny, so as to assess displacements. Advanced semantic segmentation model, U-Net, is also selected to process the problem. Experimental results show that both Canny and U-Net can perceive the edges in pictures effectively, better than other operators. In addition, we model the inspection mission for mine slopes into a traveling salesman problem, then plan the path for unmanned aerial vehicle by swarm intelligence-based optimization.
