Summary A one-hour, television show “Food$en$e” was produced by the Nutrition Program and WPSX-TV at The Pennsylvania State University. Five nutrition issues were dealt with, and each was introduced with a dramatic vignette and concluded with consumer tips that divided the show into five 12-minute segments. Information about the issues was presented in lecture format with appropriate visual aids. Nutrition experts actively participated in all phases of the show's development and production. Feedback from viewers of the broadcast indicated that the show was well received. In a controlled evaluation, viewing the show before taking a nutrition knowledge test led participants to score 23% higher than participants who took the test before viewing the show. Most participants rated the show good to excellent. A desire for more television shows on nutrition was indicated by both viewers of the broadcast and participants in the controlled evaluation. A length of no more than 30 minutes is recommended for future shows.
