IoT is emerging as a massive web of heterogeneous networks estimated to interconnect over 41 billion devices by 2025, generating around 79 zettabytes of data. The heterogeneous network shall bring in a plethora of digital services leveraging cloud and communication technologies to drive smart city applications. As users access these services remotely in a ubiquitous environment over public channels, it becomes imperative to secure their communication. Both entity and message authentication emerge as a critical security primitive to thwart unauthorized access and prevent the falsification of messages. While researchers have given due attention to achieving mutual authentication between the subscriber (remote user) and gateway node (broker), the mutual authentication between the gateway node and an IoT sensor node is left to be desired. It could be done at the peril of a rogue or a shadow IoT device unauthorizedly joining an IoT-based network. Some of the widely used IoT-specific application layer protocols like constrained application protocol (COAP) and message queue telemetry transport (MQTT) protocol are not inherently equipped with adequate security safeguards. They, therefore, rely on underlying transport layer security protocols, which are highly computationally intensive. To address this issue, this paper proposes a three-factor authentication framework suitable for IoT-driven critical applications based upon identity, password and a digital signature scheme. The framework employs publish-subscribe pattern leveraging elliptical curve cryptography (ECC) and computationally low hash chains. The formal and informal security analysis shows that the framework is resistant to different types of cryptographic attacks. Furthermore, the automated validation performed with the Scyther tool verifies that there are no cryptographic attacks found on any of the claims stated in the proposed framework. Finally, a comparison of the framework security features, computational, and communication overheads is carried out with other existing protocols.

One of the main application scenario that the upcoming 5G systems are expected to support is Internet of Things (IoT) traffic backhauling. With the exponential increase of devices, it follows the critical challenge of handling the huge data volume that they produce. Terrestrial Networks may not be sufficient for that, or not always available. Satellites then come into play, and they can provide the ubiquitous coverage targeted by 5G. On the other side, aggregation can be an efficient strategy to reduce the amount of traffic, and use network resources in an efficient manner. Building on that, in this work we consider an hybrid IoT-satellite network architecture for collecting MQTT traffic. We design an advanced filter namely MQTT-MFA that performs MQTT topics aggregation in close proximity of MQTT Publishers before data is sent over the satellite link. The developed MQTT-MFA implementation leverages on MQTT bridge, and it is compliant with Mosquitto, an open source MQTT broker. Extensive simulation results have demonstrated that MQTT-MFA requires only 10% of the TCP/IP overhead generated in a baseline architecture (where the bridge is not set up) and 1/4 number of bytes to transmit the same amount of information, when compression of the data payload is also enabled.

The Internet of Things (IoT) has become ubiquitous and greatly affected peoples‘ daily lives. With the increasing development of IoT devices, the corresponding security issues are becoming more and more challenging. Such a severe security situation raises the following questions that need urgent attention: What are the primary security threats that IoT devices face currently‘ How do vendors and users deal with these threats‘ In this paper, we aim to answer these critical questions through a large-scale systematic study. Specifically, we perform a ten-month-long empirical study on the vulnerability of 1,362,906 IoT devices varying from six types. The results show sufficient evidence that N-days vulnerability is seriously endangering the IoT devices: 385,060 (28.25%) devices suffer from at least one N-days vulnerability. Moreover, 2,669 of these vulnerable devices may have been compromised by botnets. We further reveal the massive differences among five popular IoT search engines: Shodan, Censys, Zoomeye, Fofa and NTI. Besides, we measure the security of MQTT servers and identify that 12,740 (88%) MQTT servers have no password protection. Our analysis can serve as an important guideline for investigating the security of IoT devices, as well as advancing the development of a more secure environment for IoT systems.

Healthcare is one of the largest domains across the globe both in terms of employment and income generation. It is continuously evolving and exploiting new technological dimensions to incorporate innovations for providing universal health coverage. Sharing of data collected by various sensors deployed at the patient’s end is a growing solicitude in healthcare as the privacy of the personal healthcare data is of paramount importance. In this paper, a blockchain based healthcare framework is proposed to address the problems related to the sensor-based patient vital body parameters collection, monitoring, secured data storage and sharing among different stakeholders. This framework uses Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) devices interfaced with MAX30205 (human body temperature), and a blood pressure including heart-rate measuring device to collect the patient vital parameters. A Markov state chain is modeled to monitor the patient medical states through various phases during the treatment and monitoring process. Application layer protocols MQTT, CoAP, and AMQP are evaluated for latency and packet loss during data transfers. Ethereum permissioned blockchain is used to deploy the proposed model. Smart contracts provide access control only to the authorized users. A comparative analysis is provided in the end to highlight the merits of the proposed model over the existing similar methods. Due to the parallelism and use of blockchain, the system reports 80% improvement in terms of nodes and transaction scalability compared to the existing systems.

An open-source P2P energy trading platform facilitates energy trading amongst the peers. The proposed system provides real time data acquisition, monitoring and control of self-generated energy at a remote location. The trading activities are done on a web interface that uses a private Ethereum blockchain. A smart contract is deployed on the Ethereum blockchain and the trading activities performed on the web interface are recorded on a tamper-proof blockchain network. An internet of things platform is used to monitor and control the self-generated energy. Energy data is collected and processed by means of ESP32-S2 microcontrollers using field instrumentation devices which are connected to the voltage source and load. An open-source decentralized Peer-to-Peer (P2P) energy trading system, designed on the blockchain and internet of things (IoT) architecture is proposed. The hardware setup includes a relay, a current sensor, a voltage sensor, a Wi-Fi router and ESP32-S2 microcontroller. For data transfer the Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocol is used over a local network. ESP32-S2 is set up as MQTT client and Node-Red IoT server is used as MQTT broker. Hypertext Transfer Protocol (http) request method is implemented to connect the Node-Red server with the web interface developed using React.JS library. The system design, implementation, testing, and results are presented in this paper.

Internet of Things (IoT)- based services connect the user with sensing devices through intermediary devices like a gateway. The authentication with secure key exchange assures security trio of confidentiality, integrity, and availability for the complete IoT-based system. It also ensures trusted privacy of communicated information. Recently, numerous authors proposed a Remote User Authentication scheme (RUA) on User-Gateway based secure key exchange for the tiny and lightweight sensor based paradigms such as an IoT and a wireless sensor network (WSN) using lightweight mathematical approaches. In this article, we propose a reliable and efficient lightweight key exchange scheme with the secure RUA for the user-gateway model. For designing a lightweight RUA scheme, we use elliptic curve cryptography (ECC). We use BAN-Logic for the validation of mutual authentication. We use widely accepted random oracle-based ROR model for formal security analysis and Dolev-Yao channel for informal security analysis. For the implementation and result collection of the proposed scheme, we used publisher-subscriber-based lightweight Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocol. Overall, in this article, we propose a highly secure and efficient RUA scheme for the sensor-based environment with the formal security analysis and real-time implementation.

Internet of things (IOT) has taken a very pervasive role in our technological advancement. Today we find development in medical, schools, industrial sectors using IOT to enhance their operations. IOT is used in medical to gather information about patient’s health records, in schools’ teachers are able to track attendance of students in the campus, in industries motor controls, maintenance, and predictive fault analysis are some of application. The architecture of IOT is setup in such a way that sensors and actuators are connected to the internet. The devices on which interface to internet are small embedded modules such as microcontroller which have limited resources and processing power at the edge. Hence an efficient and reliable communication protocol is needed which fulfills the design criteria. MQTT is implemented using client and broker network entities. In this paper a hardware system is developed which tracks and monitor the parameters like temperature, RPM, vibration, load current and voltage of induction motor. A Dashboard is developed which illustrates the various parameters on IOT cloud platform which can be accessed remotely. PurposeThis modeling facilitates the determination of control responses (or possibly reconfiguration) upon such events and the identification of which segments of the pipeline can continue to function uninterrupted. Based on this modeling, an algorithm is presented to implement the control responses and to establish this determination. In this work, the authors propose using Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT), which is an integrated method to perform the system-wide control based on message exchanging among local node controllers (agents) and the global controller (broker).Design/methodology/approachComplex manufacturing lines in industrial plants are designed to accomplish an overall task in an incremental mode. This typically consists of a sequence of smaller tasks organized as cascaded processing nodes with local controls, which must be coordinated and aided by a system-wide (global) controller. This work presents a logic modeling technique for such pipelines and a method for using its logic to determine the consequent effects of events where a node halts/fails on the overall operation.FindingsThe method uses a protocol for establishing communication of node events and the algorithm to determine the consequences of node events in order to produce global control directives, which are communicated back to node controllers over MQTT. The algorithm is simulated using a complex manufacturing line with arbitrary events to illustrate the sequence of events and the agents–broker message exchanging.Originality/valueThis approach (MQTT) is a relatively new concept in Cyber-Physical Systems. The proposed example of feed-forward is not new; however, for illustration purposes, it was suggested that a feed-forward be used. Future works will consider practical examples that are at the core of the manufacturing processes.

Skateboarding as a method of transportation has become prevalent, which has increased the occurrence and likelihood of pedestrian–skateboarder collisions and near-collision scenarios in shared-use roadway areas. Collisions between pedestrians and skateboarders can result in significant injury. New approaches are needed to evaluate shared-use areas prone to hazardous pedestrian–skateboarder interactions, and perform real-time, in situ (e.g., on-device) predictions of pedestrian–skateboarder collisions as road conditions vary due to changes in land usage and construction. A mechanism called the Surrogate Safety Measures for skateboarder–pedestrian interaction can be computed to evaluate high-risk conditions on roads and sidewalks using deep learning object detection models. In this paper, we present the first ever skateboarder–pedestrian safety study leveraging deep learning architectures. We view and analyze state of the art deep learning architectures, namely the Faster R-CNN and two variants of the Single Shot Multi-box Detector (SSD) model to select the correct model that best suits two different tasks: automated calculation of Post Encroachment Time (PET) and finding hazardous conflict zones in real-time. We also contribute a new annotated data set that contains skateboarder–pedestrian interactions that has been collected for this study. Both our selected models can detect and classify pedestrians and skateboarders correctly and efficiently. However, due to differences in their architectures and based on the advantages and disadvantages of each model, both models were individually used to perform two different set of tasks. Due to improved accuracy, the Faster R-CNN model was used to automate the calculation of post encroachment time, whereas to determine hazardous regions in real-time, due to its extremely fast inference rate, the Single Shot Multibox MobileNet V1 model was used. An outcome of this work is a model that can be deployed on low-cost, small-footprint mobile and IoT devices at traffic intersections with existing cameras to perform on-device inferencing for in situ Surrogate Safety Measurement (SSM), such as Time-To-Collision (TTC) and Post Encroachment Time (PET). SSM values that exceed a hazard threshold can be published to an Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) broker, where messages are received by an intersection traffic signal controller for real-time signal adjustment, thus contributing to state-of-the-art vehicle and pedestrian safety at hazard-prone intersections.

This paper assesses the relative performance of the MQTT protocol in comparison to the Secure Remote Update Protocol (SRUP) in a number of simulated real-world conditions, and describes an experiment that has been conducted to measure the processing delay associated with the use of the more secure protocol. Experimental measurements for power consumption of the devices and the size of comparable TCP packets were also made. Analysis shows that the use of the SRUP protocol added an additional processing delay of between 42.92 ms and 51.60 ms—depending on the specific hardware in use. There was also shown to be a 55.47% increase in power consumption when running the secure SRUP protocol, compared with an MQTT implementation.

Things or device under the Internet of Things, when connected to the internet, becomes a product, offers various applications and services for end-users. Existing methodologies offer sensor-based IoT based health-care services, to the end-users populated with lots of sensed values all at a time, making the health-care system with least robustness and inefficient due to unsystematic preview of patient’s health record. In order to address this issue, a novel semantic-based service framework is proposed in this paper which allows the end-user to subscribe for a specific physiological parameter, among all the available sensed data, making the health-care system more efficient. In the SeSem framework, Semantification rules and semantification relationship table are applied to the sensed JavaScript object Notation format (JSON) data, in order to semantically separate the JSON data, into a meaningful format. To list the sensed data according to the significance of health issues, a priority is assigned to the sensors in the semantification relationship table. Hence, semantically separated data can be done along with assigned priority. Sensor-based Sematic (SS) ontology is then applied to the semantically separated data, to transform the sensed data more relevant in terms of particular disease and sensor associated with it. The semantically separated sensed data are then published to the Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) interface. Using MQTT subscribe, the end-user along with date and time, requests for a particular service, using a Semantic Similarity mapping algorithm, which compares the entire sensed data to that of requested data and responds with a particular physiological parameter request. To make the health care system deploy services in an intelligent way, deep learning algorithm Feedforward Recurrent Neural Networks are applied, which makes the prediction of sensed data based on the latest update when the end-user subscribes for a certain sensed data without specifying date and time. The proposed methodology is evaluated against IoT performance metrics which had shoed showing better results in terms of service-oriented IoT.

Most of the IoT applications require real time and secure exchange of information among connected devices and hence, currently, security of communication protocols is becoming key topic of research. MQTT, a lightweight communication protocol, is used for real time communication between networks. Authors have reviewed numerous published researches on secure MQTT protocol for IoT networks and have discovered security loop holes of MQTT communication protocol that are needed to be addressed. This article proposes a secure and real time MQTT protocol by incorporating SSL certificate to MQTT broker for IoT applications without data loss. The research has been implemented in Raspberry Pi 3B system using Python 3.4.10 development platform along with Numpy 1.11.1 and scipy 0.18.0 (for mathematical analysis), paho-mqtt 1.5.0 (for MQTT publication/subscription), and Chromium (for displaying research outcome). The outcome of this research shows that the proposed MQTT protocol has tighten security during exchanging information over IoT networks without any loss of data. The subject of research is modeling the structure of the Internet of things (IoT) network for controlling audio information based on the IoT platform. The purpose of the article is to detail the process of modeling the audio information monitoring network based on the IoT platform. The authors proposed the structure of a multi-agent system (MAS) for monitoring audio information (MASAI). The structure of MASAI includes many agents of sound transformation, analysis of information received from them, and decision-making. It was decided to use the IoT network, which includes sound sensors, the IoT platform, the notification service, and the user’s application to simulate the MASAI. The structure of this network using the Amazon platform is proposed. An algorithm for modeling the Internet of things network for analyzing audio information based on the AWS platform is presented, including simulating audio sensors, transmitting this information to the platform, sensors authenticating, processing information according to certain rules, generating notifications to a user. Detailed structure of the AWS platform is provided with a description of the functions of its components such as: device gateway, rule machine, certificate block, device copy block, database, analytics block, notification service. The algorithm for connecting devices to the AWS platform is given: creating a device certificate on the platform, creating a security policy, rules for processing information received from devices, and testing the network. The features of the algorithm for modeling the readings of sound information sensors on a smartphone are shown, steps are given for organizing its communication with the platform, performing security procedures, sending data in the form of an MQTT message, and displaying the captured audio information.

With the rapidly growing number of internet of things (IoT) devices connected to the internet, accessing the available internet services has become more significant to support the operation of these devices. However, according to the limited resources available on IoT devices, accessing these services can be exhaustive, which has encouraged the proposal of new light-weight protocols, e.g. the MQ Telemetry Transport (MQTT) and the Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP). Accordingly, a new system is proposed in this paper to proxy all internet services using their requirements and protocols to the IoT devices using these light-weight protocols. The proposed system has been able to significantly reduce the resources consumption on IoT devices, such as the energy, memory, time and network bandwidth. Accordingly, this system can significantly improve the efficiency of these devices, so that IoT devices can achieve more tasks using the same resources, or the same tasks using less resources.

The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work considers Smart Personal Protective Equipment as “Intelligent Protection For The Future”. It mainly consists of electronic components that collect data about their use, the workers who wear them, and the working environment. This paper proposes a distributed solution of Smart Personal Protective Equipment for the safety monitoring of Lone Workers by adopting low-cost electronic devices. In addition to the same hazards as anyone else, Lone Workers need additional and specific systems due to the higher risk they run on a work site. To this end, the Edge-Computing paradigm can be adopted to deploy an architecture embedding wearable devices, which alerts safety managers when workers do not wear the prescribed Personal Protective Equipment and supports a fast rescue when a worker seeks help or an accidental fall is automatically detected. The proposed system is a work-in-progress which provides an architecture design to accommodate different requirements, namely the deployment difficulties at temporary and large working sites, the maintenance and connectivity recurring cost issues, the respect for the workers’ privacy, and the simplicity of use for workers and their supervisors.

The Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm is a predominant research domain for smart cities, smart villages, society, and industry 4.0. The introduction of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) in an ultra-low latency network with fog, dews, and edge computing gives the researcher ample scope to establish a decentralized architecture for ultra-high-speed message exchange between IoT devices. This work mainly focused on Social Internet of Things ecosystem and its design to efficiently handle large group social gatherings, events, and emergency service management. We propose a layered message transfer framework for the social IoT scenario. We also establish network connection through flying ad hoc network architecture. The standard IoT message transfer protocol is redesigned by amalgamating with an opportunistic routing mechanism and deployed within 6G software-defined network (SDN) slice. We use seven distinguished network slices for different services and corresponding access. The study reveals nearly 99% of message delivery rate with a latency upper bound of 2300 ms by opportunistic message transfer scheme in a dense network scenario for QoS 2. It also shows 95% of the bandwidth utilization per slice and 97% of network coverage under SDN in quality of service level 2. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

With the advent of the Internet-of-Things (IoT), it is considered to be one of the latest innovations that offer interesting opportunities for different vertical industries. One of the most relevant IoT technology areas is smart construction. IoT operates in several sectors on a daily basis; implementation includes smart building, smart grids, smart cities, smart houses, physical defense, e-health, asset, and transportation management, but it is not restricted to this. Support from smart IoT buildings is an IoT-level, connected, and cost-effective system. Commercial space has major requirements in terms of comfort, accessibility, security, and energy management. Such requirements can be served organically by IoT-based systems. As the supply of energy has been exhausted and energy demand has risen, there has been a growing focus on energy usage and the maintenance of buildings. With the use of evolving IoT technology, we present a secure and energy-efficient smart building architecture. Every device is known by its unique address, and one of the key web transfer protocols is the Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP). It is an application layer protocol that does not use protected channels for data transfer. Automatic key management, confidentiality, authentication, and data integrity are all features of the Datagram Transport Layer Protection (DTLS). To achieve energy efficiency, we propose a smart construction architecture that, through IoT, manages the performance of all technological systems. The results of the simulation show that the energy consumption is lowered by about 30.86% with the use of the CoAP in the smart building, which is less than the Message Queuing Telemetry Transport case (MQTT). This paper also aims to observe how to integrate the DTLS protocol with the Secure Hash Algorithm (SHA-256) using optimizations from the Certificate Authority (CA) to improve security.

The growth of the Internet of Things (IoTs) and the number of connected devices is driven by emerging applications and business models. One common aim is to provide systems able to synchronize these devices, handle the big amount of daily generated data and meet business demands. This paper proposes a cost-effective cloud-based architecture using an event-driven backbone to process many applications’ data in real-time, called REDA. It supports the Amazon Web Service (AWS) IoT core, and it opens the door as a free software-based implementation. Measured data from several wireless sensor nodes are transmitted to the cloud running application through the lightweight publisher/subscriber messaging transport protocol, MQTT. The real-time stream processing platform, Apache Kafka, is used as a message broker to receive data from the producer and forward it to the correspondent consumer. Micro-services design patterns, as an event consumer, are implemented with Java spring and managed with Apache Maven to avoid the monolithic applications’ problem. The Apache Kafka cluster co-located with Zookeeper is deployed over three availability zones and optimized for high throughput and low latency. To guarantee no message loss and to simulate the system performances, different load tests are carried out. The proposed architecture is reliable in stress cases and can handle records goes to 8000 messages in a second with low latency in a cheap hosted and configured architecture.

In the present era, the internet of things (IoT) plays an important role in diverse domains, including weather prediction. Accurate weather forecasting is very crucial for the huge production of crops. Different methods such as mathematical and statistical models have been developed to predict the weather condition of Bangladesh. In this paper, we have proposed an IoT-based low-cost smart weather prediction system using an artificial neural network. The proposed system uses an IoT platform for monitoring the weather parameters like temperature, humidity, air pressure, rainfall, soil moisture, etc. The method consists of different sensors with a Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) dashboard. It uses the data obtained from these sensors and shows satisfactory accuracy along with smart irrigation compared to the existing state-of-the-art methods.

El material particulado en el aire es uno de los elementos con mayor repercusión negativa en la salud humana, con presencia en el Ecuador. Dicha situación constituye un problema latente, con poca atención para su control, debido a los elevados costos para adquirir equipos o la existencia de empresas privadas que realicen dichas mediciones. El objetivo de la investigación es diseñar un prototipo de Internet de las Cosas para el monitoreo de material particulado en espacios reducidos, usando ESP32 con servidor hospedado en la nube. La investigación tiene un diseño experimental, con alcance descriptivo y enfoque mixto. El prototipo diseñado para la adquisición de datos utiliza módulos de censado y la configuración del protocolo de comunicación MQTT integrando la plataforma ThingSpeak. Con la investigación se determinó la utilización de materiales electrónicos asequibles, software libre para su programación y el uso de herramientas para el tratamiento y visualización de datos de manera remota. El diseño del prototipo incluyó cuatro módulos de censado, un sensor Nova SDS011 y un microcontrolador ESP32 en cada módulo. Se utilizó el entorno de desarrollo integrado Arduino y Visual Code, ambos de código abierto para la programación de censado y una red mesh. La información obtenida es enviada mediante la red Wi-Fi a una tarjeta Raspberry Pi 4, configurada como servidor local. La información es publicada mediante el protocolo MQTT en un servidor hospedado en la nube en la plataforma ThingSpeak, que permite la visualización y tratamiento de los resultados de manera remota.

This paper describes the interaction between the Internet of Things (IoT) device and the IoT infrastructure in its two different implementations: Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure. Both implementations support MQTT-based communication with IoT devices; however, the details of protocol implementation and the interfaces provided to the IoT device are somewhat different. The development of the IoT device firmware that enables communication with both infrastructures and allows the device to be portable between them needs to take these differences into consideration.

Internet of Things (IoT) applications can be used in healthcare services to monitor patients remotely. One implementation is that it is used to monitor COVID-19 patients. During the COVID-19 pandemic, people who are infected without symptoms must self-isolate so that the virus does not spread. Measurement of blood oxygen levels or SpO2 is one of the measurements that must be carried out in routine examination procedures for self-isolating patients for early detection of silent hypoxemia in COVID-19 patients. Previous research has developed an IoT-based health monitoring system with a Wireless Body Sensor Network (WBSN) and a gateway that can be used for data acquisition and transmission. The system uses a home pulse oximeter to measure SpO2 and heart rate and an Android application that functions as an IoT gateway to collect data from sensors and add location information before sending data to the server. The WBSN has been successfully integrated with two types of open source IoT platforms, namely ThingsBoard and Elasticsearch Logstash Kibana (ELK). However, it is necessary to carry out further studies on analytical and experimental performance tests of the two systems. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to develop a performance evaluation of the IoT-based SpO2 monitoring systems using the Thingsboard and ELK as IoT platforms. To evaluate the performace we ran the monitoring system on both platforms using pulse oximeter and Android device as IoT gateway with HTTP and MQTT as transport protocol for sending the data to the server. From this study we found that average time of message delivery in ELK compared to ThingsBoard using the same protocols was higher but stable.

У статті розглядається платформа для віддаленого управління (моніторингу) IoT-пристроями, які в останній час дуже широко поширюються по всьому світу. Водночас постає проблема підвищення рівня ефективності проєктування інформаційних систем, що будуть надавати доступ до різноманітної інформації з будь-якого куточка світу, де є доступ до мережі «Інтернет». Тому важливим є уважний та ретельний підхід до вибору архітектури платформи.IoT-платформа – це набір компонентів, які забезпечують: взаємодію з додатками, віддалений збір даних з датчиків, безпечне підключення та управління пристроями. IoT-платформа забезпечує перевагу при створенні IoT-систем за рахунок надання інструментів розробки, що робить Інтернет речей простіше і дешевше для кінцевих користувачів.Було проаналізовано функціональні можливості платформи. Обґрунтовано основні підходи до її побудови. Запропоновано архітектуру платформи, яка дозволяє взаємодіяти користувальницьким додаткам з IoT-пристроями.У результаті було отримано діючий прототип IoT-системи, що демонструє принцип роботи цієї платформи. Основу системи становить сервер, який взаємодіє з клієнтами та IoT-пристроями. Однак взаємодія з пристроями сервером виконується за допомогою MQTT-брокера. Взаємодія клієнтів із сервером виконується за протоколом WebSocket. Програмне забезпечення для сервера створено за допомогою мови програмування Node.js, TypeScript і фреймворка LoopBack. Для створення клієнтського інтерфейсу було використано такий стек технологій: CSS, HTML, Javascript, React, Material-UI.Розроблена платформа є дуже гнучкою та дозволяє: підключати безліч різноманітних пристроїв; конфігурувати пристрої через браузер; створювати сценарії для керування системою в цілому (сценарії створюються за допомогою візуального програмування).

The increasing need for food is not in line with the clearing of agricultural land for food crops. So that the effort to increase the productivity of agricultural products is by applying precision agriculture. However, in reality, precision agriculture is difficult to apply to conventional processes, where farmers come to the farm, collect data, then carry out maintenance. This method will make production results not optimal because maintenance is not done accurately. This study introduces a monitoring system for environmental conditions based on the Internet of Things (IoT) for agricultural land, where trials are carried out in a greenhouse. The system that has been developed consists of several sensors designed to collect information related to agricultural environmental conditions, including DHT22 sensor (temperature and humidity), DS18B20 sensor (soil temperature), soil moisture sensor (moisture content in the soil), and BH1750 sensor (light intensity). Based on the Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocol, the data is sent to a gateway (Raspberry Pi) and a local server via a wireless network to be stored in a database. By using the Node-RED Dashboard, the received sensor data is then displayed on the browser every time the sensor sends data. In addition, the local server also publishes sensor data to the public MQTT broker so that sensor data can be accessed through the MQTT Dashboard application on a smartphone. The results of testing for 25 days of the system running obtained an average success of the system in storing data of 99.64%., Kebutuhan pangan yang semakin meningkat tidak sejalan dengan pembukaan lahan pertanian untuk tanaman pangan. Sehingga upaya untuk meningkatkan produktivitas hasil pertanian yaitu dengan menerapkan pertanian presisi. Namun, pada kenyataannya pertanian presisi sulit diterapkan pada proses konvensional, dimana petani mendatangi lahan pertanian, mengambil data, lalu melakukan pemeliharaan. Cara tersebut akan membuat hasil produksi tidak maksimal karena pemeliharan tidak dilakukan secara akurat. Penelitian ini memperkenalkan sistem pemantau kondisi lingkungan berbasis Internet of Things (IoT) untuk lahan pertanian, dimana ujicoba dilakukan di dalam greenhouse. Sistem yang telah dikembangkan terdiri dari beberapa sensor yang didesain untuk mengumpulkan informasi terkait kondisi lingkungan pertanian, diantaranya sensor DHT22 (suhu dan kelembaban udara), sensor DS18B20 (suhu tanah), sensor soil moisture (kadar air pada tanah), dan sensor BH1750 (intensitas cahaya). Berbasis protokol Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT), data tersebut dikirim ke gateway (Raspberry Pi) dan server lokal melalui jaringan nirkabel untuk disimpan di dalam database. Dengan menggunakan Node-RED Dashboard, data sensor yang diterima kemudian ditampilkan pada browser setiap sensor mengirimkan data. Selain itu, server lokal juga melakukan publish data sensor ke public MQTT broker agar data sensor dapat diakses melalui aplikasi MQTT Dashboard di smartphone. Hasil pengujian selama 25 hari sistem berjalan, diperoleh rata-rata keberhasilan sistem dalam menyimpan data sebesar 99.64%.

Nearly 30% of the people in the rural areas of Bangladesh are below the poverty level. Moreover, due to the unavailability of modernized healthcare-related technology, nursing and diagnosis facilities are limited for rural people. Therefore, rural people are deprived of proper healthcare. In this perspective, modern technology can be facilitated to mitigate their health problems. ECG sensing tools are interfaced with the human chest, and requisite cardiovascular data is collected through an IoT device. These data are stored in the cloud incorporates with the MQTT and HTTP servers. An innovative IoT-based method for ECG monitoring systems on cardiovascular or heart patients has been suggested in this study. The ECG signal parameters P, Q, R, S, T are collected, pre-processed, and predicted to monitor the cardiovascular conditions for further health management. The machine learning algorithm is used to determine the significance of ECG signal parameters and error rate. The logistic regression model fitted the better agreements between the train and test data. The prediction has been performed to determine the variation of PQRST quality and its suitability in the ECG Monitoring System. Considering the values of quality parameters, satisfactory results are obtained. The proposed IoT-based ECG system reduces the health care cost and complexity of cardiovascular diseases in the future.

Workspace or home security systems required special attention, especially in the issue of locks for room security that must be unique, not easily opened by unauthorized people to enter the room. In this research, indoor security systems applied Internet of things (IoT), the use of MQTT Broker which functions as a getway for data transactions between publishers and subscribers, power supply and ESP8266. The method to building the smart doorlock was use prototype method, designed the system and design diagrams, used UML (Unified Manipulation Language), the analysing problem used the PIECES method. The use of the MQTT broker functions as a gateway to connect publishers, subscribers, power supplies and the ESP8266 wifi module which functions as a gateway between devices to the mobile. The result of this researched was prototype the smart door lock system using IoT.

With the development of the times, the concept of "interconnection of all things" has been deeply rooted in the hearts of people. As an early and developing Internet technology, the Internet of things(IoT) has shown its infinite potential in many fields of social life. In agriculture, the agricultural IoT is coverring a growing number of fields: greenhouse planting, climate factor collection, climate prediction and so on. Based on this idea, the design idea of "patchouli growth environment monitoring system" is put forward. In this paper, the medicinal plant "patchouli" is studied, and its medicinal value and growth factors are discussed. Meanwhile, based on zigbee technology, we design a set of feasible monitoring scheme including hardware and software. The hardware part used ZigBee wireless network design, mainly relies on the cc2530 chip and the esp8266 wifi chip to carry on the wireless distance transmission to the sensor data. It interacts between OneNET cloud server and mysql database through MQTT protocol, TCP/IP protocol and HTTP protocol.

Artificial neurons are quite useful to generate chaotic behavior, and they can be implemented on embedded systems like Raspberry Pi that include WiFi network connectivity. In this manner, this paper shows the use of some artificial neurons to generate chaotic binary sequences whose randomness is enhanced by post-processing approaches and measured by performing statistical NIST SP 800-22 tests. The chaotic neurons are synchronized by different methods and each neuron is implemented on a Raspberry Pi, which allows connectivity to a machine-to-machine (M2M) broker. This wireless connectivity advantage is exploited herein to develop a lightweight cryptographic application under the message queueing telemetry transport (MQTT) for Internet of Things (IoT) protocol. The synchronized neurons have a topology in which one Raspberry Pi works as publisher and can send encrypted information to multiple subscribers. Due to the chaotic behavior of the neurons, the Raspberry Pi acting as subscriber can recover the encrypted information if and only if it has the right key, i.e., the correct random binary sequence generated by the publisher. To augment the security against attacks, the chaotic neurons have different initial conditions before M2M synchronization is accomplished, and the color image encryption under MQTT for IoT is evaluated by performing correlation, histogram, variance, entropy, and NPCR tests.

The evolution of Internet of Things (IoT) led to the construction of many IoT middleware, a software that plays a key role since it supports the communication among devices, users, and applications. Although various solutions and studies were proposed, they rarely address crucial privacy and security considerations, especially regarding the message queuing telemetry transport (MQTT) protocol. Moreover, in the majority of the solutions, integrating new devices is a time-consuming task performed manually that cannot be accomplished in a scenario with thousands, maybe millions of devices. In this sense, this article proposes a new IoT middleware, called In.IoT, a scalable, secure, and innovative middleware solution that addresses the middleware concerns identified in this article. In.IoT architectural recommendations and requirements are detailed and can be replicated by new and available solutions. It supports MQTT, CoAP, and HTTP as application-layer protocols. Its performance is evaluated in comparison with the most promising solutions available in the literature and the results obtained by the proposed solution are extremely promising. In.IoT is evaluated, demonstrated, validated, and it is ready and available for use.

Objectives: To design a non-destructive, low-effort, low-cost device that can estimate the early age and compressive strength of in-place concrete in real time. The maturity protocol eliminates the need for on-site concrete cylinder break checks or hammer tapping test saving time and resources. Methods: Four different temperature sensors were used to measure the temperature of concrete in order to improve the system’s accuracy. As concrete structure monitoring with temperature sensors is a continuous process, the study includes automated data logging at regular intervals, storage of measured temperature data over time on an attached SD card, and transmission to a server through the SIM800L’s GPRS capability. Findings: The current work presents a low-cost (31 USD), low-powered (3.7v/2.8A), and portable temperature sensor and logger that will track and record temperature values so that values can be monitored remotely from anywhere on the planet. Data can be managed and tracked from any location and on any computer that has internet access. Communication between presented units with MQTT platform has been studied. Novelty/Applications: This device is a simple batteryoperated, small-size, compact, low-power data acquisition system with multiple sensors. With the support of GPRS, data can be sent to a server. Concrete testing delays are no longer a concern. It is possible to check the status of pour and receive updates anytime, wherever, on any computer with this method’s real-time data and 24/7 remote monitoring capabilities. This simple,trouble-free module is completely integrated and needs no wires or testing laboratories, allowing for quick onsite decisions and preventing unnecessary setbacks. The core concept of smart manufacturing is based on digitization to construct intelligent production and management in the manufacturing process. By digitizing the production process and connecting all levels from product design to service, the purpose of improving manufacturing efficiency, reducing production cost, enhancing product quality, and optimizing user experience can be achieved. To digitize the manufacturing process, IoT technology will have to be introduced into the manufacturing process to collect and analyze process information. However, one of the most important problems in building the industrial IoT (IIoT) environment is that different industrial network protocols are used for different equipment in factories. Therefore, the information in the manufacturing process may not be easily exchanged and obtained. To solve the above problem, a smart factory network architecture based on MQTT (MQ Telemetry Transport), IoT communication protocol, is proposed in this study, to construct a heterogeneous interface communication bridge between the machine tool, embedded device Raspberry Pi, and website. Finally, the system architecture is implemented and imported into the factory, and a smart manufacturing information management system is developed. The edge computing module is set up beside a three-axis machine tool, and a human-machine interface is built for the user controlling and monitoring. Users can also monitor the system through the dynamically updating website at any time and any place. The function of real-time gesture recognition based on image technology is developed and built on the edge computing module. The gesture recognition results can be transmitted to the machine controller through MQTT, and the machine will execute the corresponding action according to different gestures to achieve human-robot collaboration. The MQTT transmission architecture developed here is validated by the given edge computing application. It can serve as the basis for the construction of the IIoT environment, assist the traditional manufacturing industry to prepare for digitization, and accelerate the practice of smart manufacturing.

This work aims to monitor air quality in places where humans spend most of their time, such as workplaces and homes. Radon gas is a naturally occurring, colourless, odourless and tasteless gas that accumulates in enclosed spaces. It is a radioactive element produced by the decay of its natural parent elements, uranium and thorium, which is harmful to our respiratory system when inhaled. The Internet of Things (IoT) is the key to the problems of contemporary life, we are witnessing an emerging connected world, and these architectures have the potential by using sensors to take data from the physical world, transfer it over the network and store it for further decision making or action. The proposal of this work is based on a radon sensor connected to an IoT device, the Message Queuing Telemetry Transport protocol (MQTT), the Node-RED for managing data flows and a database management system on a web server. The information collected by the sensor is sent by the IoT device to be processed by Node-RED. The obtained data is stored in a database to be represented on a web server. Therefore, this work includes a case study where the technologies involved in the indoor radon gas monitoring system are presented. It is a way to perform radon gas measurements automatically. The final application would allow: displaying radon concentrations on a map with placemarks and updating the information in real-time. The database could record data from other radon sensors that any user wants to associate with this website.

Internet of Things (IoT) devices are becoming ubiquitous, and may be arranged to form formal or ad hoc Command and Control (C2) networks. Such networks typically do not have a mechanism to facilitate the sharing of either data or control inputs. This paper examines this problem in the context of IoT devices operating within C2 systems which do not have a trusted relationship with each other. We propose a solution which we call syndication, to provide a controlled mechanism to share data between C2 systems of devices without a fully trusted relationship. This paper builds upon previous work which established a lightweight protocol for secure C2 operations within the IoT. Using the proposed approach enables not only sharing of data but also permits the external controller to submit moderated requests for actions to be performed. The paper concludes by examining how this approach could also be adopted to provide secure guest access to connected systems in a domestic or commercial context.

Although numerous consumer devices use Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) protocol stack to connect and communicate over the Internet, their integration into a single Internet of Things (IoT) solution represents a challenge, primarily due to the lack of the standardized interoperability framework on the application layer. Devices produced by different manufacturers cannot operate together out of the box, thus raising the cost of system setup and maintenance. In this paper, a novel protocol is proposed that aims to bridge this gap. It is based on Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocol and allows the seamless integration of different kinds of IP devices into the connected system. The proposed protocol is complete as it covers the aspects of device discovery and association in the IoT network. It provides mechanisms for IoT network maintenance and defines the abstract device model and communication patterns to enable system-wide device interoperability. The other goal of the protocol is to be portable to resource-constrained platforms. To validate the proposed protocol, it was integrated into the existing smart home hub, and for testing and validation purposes, prototype devices were developed.

The inclusion ofmessaging protocols like MQTT is important to ensure as fewerrors as possible in sending millions of IoT messages. Thisprotocol is a great component of the IoT universe due to itslightweight design and low power consumption. DistributedMQTT systems are typically needed in actual applicationenvironments because centralized MQTT methods cannotaccommodate a massive volume of data. Although beingscalable decentralized MQTT systems, they are not suited totraffic workload variability. IoT service providers may incurexpense because the computing resources are overestimated.This points to the need for a new approach to adapt workloadfluctuation. Through proposing a modular MQTT framework,this article provides such an elasticity approach. In order toguarantee elasticity of MQTT server cluster while maintainingintact IoT implementation, the MQTT framework used offthe-shelf components. The elasticity feature of our frameworkis verified by various experiments.

Technological developments that have begun the 4.0 industrial revolution have made many sectors in everyday life begin to innovate in order to be able to compete and be more efficient. It also penetrated the medical world, which was previously still done manually and requires considerable human resources. However, along with the many innovations that exist in the process that can be automated, ranging from the process of patient registration to examination of a person himself. In this study, the authors designed a tool that can retrieve data from humans for medical needs based on the Internet of Things. Data will be taken from these measurements between the body height of the patient, the body temperature of a patient and the body of a patient at the same time automatically. After data retrieval is carried out by several sensors, then the data will be sent to the broker / server which will be sent to the Node-red dashboard using the MQTT protocol and the data will be transferred to the database. A patient's disease date will be present. ESP32, Ultrasonic Sensor, MLX90614, LoadCell and MYSQL database.

This paper presents the implementation of an Internet of Things (IoT) application that performs the Moisture level sensing through node MCU and Raspberry Pi, and data transfer to the Cloud of the Amazon Web Services or Raspberry Pi. The implementation is done using programming the Node MCU using Embedded C, Raspberry pi is Operated using Raspbian operating system and AWS EC2 Internet of Things platform based on the Node-RED tool installed on the Raspberry Pi and the AWS EC2. The Interconnection of data from the Node MCU to Raspberry Pi is done by MQTT Data Transfer Protocol and Mosquitto Protocol.

In this paper, we design and implement an MQTT load test tools for evaluating the performance of an MQTT appliance system which is capable of handling large amounts of MQTT traffic. The implemented system consists of a master that can centrally control the performance evaluation process and a set of clients that creates virtual MQTT devices and generates MQTT traffic. The MQTT Load Test system was developed using the Java language and the Jpcap library. We developed a GUI version load test and also developed a console mode system that can be executed in an environment where GUI is not available. Using the MQTT Load Test system implemented in this paper, we were able to effectively evaluate the performance of a high-performance MQTT Appliance, another important research topic. Since MQTT Load Test Master and Slave have developed not only the GUI version but also the Console version, it is possible to test the performance even in a remote connection situation where GUI is not supported. The experiment could be conducted in various scenarios, and the number of virtual clients that had to be created per a computer could be confirmed so that the computers participating in the experiment could generate or receive MQTT message traffic of a predetermined level. Applications: The MQTT Load Test system implemented in this paper can be used as a tool for performance evaluation of high-performance MQTT Appliances.
