Abstract

At the present time, Florida ranks fourth among the states in volume of high-technology industry, which includes information processing and computer-oriented activity. For this reason, a statewide review of computer science programs underway at the nine campuses of the State University System (SUS) of Florida was recently conducted. This report summarizes the findings of this review. It is the result of interviews with students, alumni, employing officials, community college personnel, and faculty and administrators concerned with the various SUS computer science programs. Twelve generic issues concerning SUS computer science programs were formulated in the study. These statewide issues were: (1) a computer science review conducted in 1978-79; (2) new programs and accreditation of programs; (3) the supply and demand of students; (4) the supply and demand of faculty; (5) equipment; (6) professional activity, and currentness of curriculum; (7) relationships with industry; (8) teacher and continuing education; (9) computing across the curriculum; (10) articulation/program direction; (11) branch campuses; and (12) funding. Included are institutional reports from each of the nine SUS campuses. (TW)

Abstract

This paper attempts to clarify infrastructure's definition and its impact and reach. Despite the wide use of the term and the importance of the entities it represents, the notion of infrastructures has not been thoroughly addressed. We use different perspectives for defining infrastructures and investigate the intricate relationships a system has with its infrastructure. In order to deal with the complexity of the infrastructure notion, we provide a diverse set of classifications. We focus on the information technology infrastructure and its security and survivability. We investigate the design issues for building evolvable, resilient, disaster-hardened infrastructures. Abstract

The note announces the addition of Jack Mostow and Peter Ng to the Editorial Board of the periodical "IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering." Jack Mostow is a professor of computer science at Rutgers University and was previously associated with the University of Southern California's Information Sciences Institute as a research scientist in the area of artificial intelligence. Meanwhile, Peter Ng is a professor of computer science at the University of Missouri in Columbia and is also Chairman of its Department of Computer Science. Their appointments were approved by the Editorial Board and the Publications Board, Transactions Advisory Committee and Executive Committee of the IEEE Computer Society.

Some papers from the 1978 computer science conference, COMPSAC 78 Conference, are presented in this issue of the "IEEE Transaction on Software Engineering". Computer science of which software engineering is a very important component, is a multifaceted discipline and the computer applications are providing the major avenues of its growth, just as physical and biological sciences have been the beacon lights of the growth of mathematical sciences. The papers in this issue and those presented at COMPSAC 78 portray this emerging thrust of software application experience.
