As load and renewable penetration continues to grow, optimal placement and sizing of substations is becoming increasingly important in distribution system planning. This paper presents an improved methodology to solve the substation siting and sizing problem based on geographic information and supervised learning. The proposed approach can optimize the locations, capacities, and power supply ranges of substations with minimum investment and annual operation costs. Capital cost of land adds complexity and difficulty to the substation placement problem, especially for highly developed urban areas. This paper presents a theoretical framework to determine the optimal location of substations considering the cost of land. The state-of-the-art parallel computing techniques are employed so that co-optimization for substations of multiple voltage levels can be directly conducted in a computational efficient way. Case studies are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Image classification is a method that distinguishes the different categories of targets based on the different features of image. The current problem usually is that the feature modeling of target has a great influence on recognition robustness. In order to solve this problem, a correlation-based method is presented to optimize the bag-of-visual-word (BOVW) model by reducing the dictionary size. The features with strong relevance to categories are preserved to establish a visual dictionary. The modest visual dictionary is trained by support vector machine (SVM) classifier and its properties are analyzed. Finally, the effectiveness of the method proposed in this paper is validated through experiments. The experimental results demonstrate that the presented idea not only improves the robustness and accuracy of image classification, but also works well on practical problem.

The hierarchical control architecture, including layers of primary, secondary and tertiary controls, is becoming the standard operating paradigm for microgrids (MGs). Two major factors that limit the adoption of existing hierarchical control in microgrid are the low accuracy in reactive power sharing and the requirement for complex communication infrastructure. This paper addresses this problem by proposing a novel distributed primary and secondary control for distributed generators dispersed in a multi-bus microgrid. The proposed method realizes voltage control and accurate reactive power sharing in a distributed manner using minimum communication. Each distributed generator only needs its own information and minimum information from its neighboring units. Topology of the network can be flexible which supports the plug-and-play feature of microgrids. In a distribution system, high R/X ratio and system imbalance can no longer be neglected and thus the sequence component analysis and virtual impedance are implemented in the proposed control framework. The proposed framework is validated by simulation results on a MG testbed modified from the IEEE 13-bus distribution system.

As the measuring accuracy of a light open 3D vision coordinate measuring system depends on the accurate center position of a probe tip, this paper proposed a novel and simple approach based on the model of measuring system for calibrating the center position of probe tip for the light pen.Based on position invariant principle, the objective function was established according to the control point information of every image. Then, the general inverse method for least square solution of nonlinear multivariable equations was employed to solve the object function and to obtain the center position of probe tip. Finally, average theory was used to improve the stability and convergence speed and to implement the calibration with a reference standard cone. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.Under a satisfied convergence speed, the repeatability of the system reaches 0.033,0.030 and 0.043 mm in x,y and z axes, respectively.A comparison on the measured circle diameter of a workpiece and a reference shows that the system measurement accuracy has met medium precision industrial measurement requirements with the calibrated probe tip center.

This paper presents a robust data-driven framework for clustering large-scale daily chronological load curves from smart meters, with a focus on the challenges encountered in practice. The first challenge is the low data quality issue due to bad and missing data, which has been a major obstacle for various in-depth analyses of smart meter data. A novel Smoothed Alternating Least Squares (SALS) approach is proposed to recover missing/bad smart meter data by taking advantage of their low-rank property. The second challenge is brought by different data reporting rates of smart meters. A Dynamic Time Warping (DTW)-based approach is proposed that is more efficient and eliminates the need for data interpolation or measurement downsampling. The proposed approach enables flexible data collection strategies and gateway locations to meet various smart grid performance requirements. The proposed framework is tested through experiments using real-world smart meter data.

Stream processing applications continuously process large amounts of online streaming data in real time or near real time. They have strict latency constraints. However, the continuous processing makes them vulnerable to any failures, and the recoveries may slow down the entire processing pipeline and break latency constraints. The upstream backup scheme is one of the most widely applied fault-tolerant schemes for stream processing systems. It introduces complex backup dependencies to tasks, which increases the difficulty of controlling recovery latencies. Moreover, when dependent tasks are located on the same processor, they fail at the same time in processor-level failures, bringing extra recovery latencies that increase the impacts of failures. This paper studies the relationship between the task allocation and the recovery latency of a stream processing application. We present a correlated failure effect model to describe the recovery latency of a stream topology in processor-level failures under a task allocation plan. We introduce a recovery-latency aware task allocation problem (RTAP) that seeks task allocation plans for stream topologies that will achieve guaranteed recovery latencies. We discuss the difference between RTAP and classic task allocation problems and present a heuristic algorithm with a computational complexity of O(n log
2 n) to solve the problem. Extensive experiments were conducted to verify the correctness and effectiveness of our approach. It improves the resource usage by 15%-20% on average. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

In image processing and computer vision, snake (active contour model) is an effective tool in implementing brim detection or contour extraction of object. But the snake algorithm has the deadly shortcoming - the result is affected by the origin position. In this paper, proposed a new modified algorithm combining centric algorithm into the snake algorithm, so get the priority information of the origin position. The algorithm reduces sensitivity to initialization while providing superior performance. Finally the results of the computer simulation show the advantage of the new algorithm.

The stream processing model continuously processes online data in an on-pass fashion that can be more vulnerable to failures than other big-data processing schemes. Existing fault-tolerant (FT) approaches have been presented to enhance the reliability of stream processing systems. However, the fundamental tradeoff between recovery latency and FT overhead is still unclear, so these scheme cannot provide recovery latency guarantees. This paper introduces the FT Configuration (FTC) problem and presents a solution for guaranteed recovery latency with minimum backups. A failure effect model is presented to describe the relationship between recovery latency and FTC (the amount and locations of backups). With this model, we design an algorithm to compute FTCs for different types of stream topologies according to recovery latency requirements. Extensive experiments are conducted to verify the correctness and effectiveness of our approach. We prove that our algorithm guarantees recovery latencies for all directed acyclic graph (DAG) stream topologies. For line(s) and tree topologies, our algorithm solves the FTC problem with a time complexity of O(N) . For a general DAG topology, a heuristic function is used to generate FTCs. This causes fewer than 10% more backups on average compared to the optimal solution with a time complexity of $O(N^2)$. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

IEEE Standard 1596 Scalable Coherent Interface (SCI) a COTS technology, is one of the candidate architectures for a "Unified Network." Its basic topology is a buffer insertion ring. Messages can be transmitted concurrently on the ring, thus can achieve high throughput. But problems exist when using SCI in real-time applications. The difficulty mainly results from its buffer-insertion feature which makes the latency of real-time messages difficult to predict. The goal of this study is not to solve the problem of using SCI for general real-time applications but to provide a bandwidth allocation scheme for synchronous messages transmission in avionics environments. The scheme is based on features of avionics interconnections and the bandwidth allocation scheme in slotted ring. An improved SCI protocol is proposed and schedulable network utilization is given.
