Children learn powerful internal models of the world around them from a few years of egocentric visual experience. Can such internal models be learned from a child's visual experience with highly generic learning algorithms or do they require strong inductive biases? Recent advances in collecting large-scale, longitudinal, developmentally realistic video datasets and generic self-supervised learning (SSL) algorithms are allowing us to begin to tackle this nature vs. nurture question. However, existing work typically focuses on image-based SSL algorithms and visual capabilities that can be learned from static images (e.g. object recognition), thus ignoring temporal aspects of the world. To close this gap, here we train self-supervised video models on longitudinal, egocentric headcam recordings collected from a child over a two year period in their early development (6-31 months). The resulting models are highly effective at facilitating the learning of action concepts from a small number of labeled examples; they have favorable data size scaling properties; and they display emergent video interpolation capabilities. Video models also learn more robust object representations than image-based models trained with the exact same data. These results suggest that important temporal aspects of a child's internal model of the world may be learnable from their visual experience using highly generic learning algorithms and without strong inductive biases.

Compositionality is considered a key hallmark of humanlanguage. However, most research focuses on item-level compositionality, e.g.,to what extent the meanings of phrases are composed of the meanings of theirsub-parts, rather than on language-level compositionality, which is the degreeto which possible combinations are utilized in practice during language use.Here, we propose a novel way to quantify the degree of language-levelcompositionality and apply it in the case of English adjective-nouncombinations. Using corpus analyses, large language models, and humanacceptability ratings, we find that (1) English only sparsely utilizes thecompositional potential of adjective–noun combinations; and (2) LLMs struggle topredict human acceptability judgments of rare combinations. Taken together, ourfindings shed new light on the role of compositionality in language andhighlight a challenging area for further improving LLMs.

Various methods of dimensionality reduction have been used to apply a quantitative approach to the study of complex skill acquisition. This work builds upon past approaches, offering a comparative analysis of principal component analysis, logistic regression, and linear discriminant analysis to quantify expertise in the domain of competitive video gaming, or “eSports.” We present a novel, robust dataset of expert and non-expert gameplay data from professional and amateur players of the Super Smash Bros. Melee competitive fighting game. We assess each quantitative model via the metrics of providing accurate expertise classification, predictive utility, and a pragmatic window into the features of complex skill performance that hold the most weight in overall performance outcomes, thereby also providing insights for direction of future training. We posit that linear discriminant analysis provides the best performance for all relevant metrics. The nuances are discussed here, and suggestions for the field are offered for future study of other complex skill domains.

The idea of curriculum learning, whereby a model is first exposed to simpler examples before an increase in complexity, has long fascinated the AI community. Unfortunately, the experimental successes of curriculum learning have been mixed, particularly applied to natural language, where a vast body of literature appears to evidence its failures. However, recent work has shown that language models trained on transcribed-child-directed-speech (CDS) learn more grammar compared to those trained on Wikipedia. To a lesser extent, the same trend has been observed through training on transcribed speech and simple text data. Motivated by these findings, we revisit the idea of curriculum learning starting from CDS, before moving to simple data, and finally finishing with complex long form text. Unfortunately, through experimentation with an array of models and training step sizes, only in the smallest models trained for the least steps does curriculum learning show any advantage over random sampling.

Background: The IoT and big data are newer technologies that can provide substantial support for healthcare systems, helping them overcome their shortcomings. The aim of this paper was to analyze the relevant literature descriptively, thematically, and chronologically from an interdisciplinary perspective in a holistic way to identify the most prolific research entities and themes. Methods: Synthetic knowledge synthesis qualitatively and quantitatively analyzes the production of literature through a combination of descriptive bibliometrics, bibliometric mapping, and content analysis. For this analysis, the Scopus bibliometric database was used. Results: In the Scopus database, 2272 publications were found; these were published between 1985 and 10 June 2024. The first article in this field was published in 1985. Until 2012, the production of such literature was steadily increasing; after that, exponential growth began, peaking in 2023. The most productive countries were the United States, India, China, the United Kingdom, South Korea, Germany, and Italy. The content analysis resulted in eight themes (four from the perspective of computer science and four from the perspective of medicine) and 21 thematic concepts (8 from the perspective of computer science and 13 from the perspective of medicine). Conclusions: The results show that the IoT and big data have become key technologies employed in preventive healthcare. Sorting is one of the basic algorithms in computer science, and has been extensively used in a variety of applications. In the big data era, as the volumes of data increase rapidly, parallel sorting has attracted much attention. Existing parallel sorting algorithms suffered from excessive communication overhead and load imbalance, making it difficult to scale massively. To solve above problems, a scalable parallel algorithm sorting by regular sampling (ScaPSRS) was proposed, which sampled the p-1 pivot elements to divide the entire data set into p disjoint subsets by all parallel processes, rather than by only one given process as PSRS did. Furthermore, ScaPSRS adopted a novel iterative update strategy of selecting pivots to guarantee that the workloads and data were evenly scheduled among the parallel processes, thus ensuring superior overall performance. A variety of experiments conducted on the Tianhe-Ⅱ supercomputer demonstrated that ScaPSRS succeeded in scaling to 32 000 cores and outperformed state-of-the-art works significantly. Word embeddings trained on large scale text corpora are central to modern natural language processing and are also important as cognitive models and tools in psycholinguistic research. An important alternative to these text-based models are embeddings derived from word association norms. Recently, these association-based embeddings have been shown to outperform text-based word embeddings of comparable complexity (such as GloVE, word2Vec & fastText) in semantic similarity rating tasks. Here we evaluate English and Rioplatense Spanish association-based embeddings derived from the Small World of Words (SWOW) project on the Google Analogy set and the Bigger Analogy Test Set. We also developed a small analogy set that focuses on semantic relationships, such as event knowledge and category-exemplar relationships such as prototypicality. SWOW-derived word embeddings perform similarly as traditional text-based word embeddings in semantic analogies, and outform them in some categories. These results illustrate relevant similarities and differences between text-based and word association-derived embeddings.

This paper explores the hypothesis of the historical evolution of Semitic morphology from biconsonantal (2C) etymons, to triconsonantal (3C) roots, which make up the majority of words in Biblical Hebrew as well as in other Semitic languages such as modern Hebrew, Arabic, etc. The rules for reducing the 3C roots to their 2C etymons are provided in detail.We use BHSA, a manually annotated corpus of the Hebrew Bible, and Word2Vec, a method for converting words to a vector representing their semantic meaning, to study the hypothesis of evolution from 2C etymons to 3C roots in biblical Hebrew.Namely, we show that words in Hebrew with different roots, that might have originated from the same 2C etymons form a denser cluster than random sets of words of the same size. These differences are statistically significant and strongly support the hypothesis of evolution from 2C etymons to 3C roots.

Our team proposed a Reading Skills Test that assesses cognitive academic language skills from six perspectives: syntactic comprehension, referential resolution, paraphrasing, inference, matching textual and non-textual information, and reading and understanding definitions. Each test item consists of a 100-word description and a multiple-choice question that tests one of the abilities from the above six perspectives. Subjects solve the test items, which appear one after another on the browser based on item response theory. We have confirmed that this test meets the desirable properties of an assessment test and have demonstrated that the syntactic processing ability measured by this test has improved yearly from the fifth to the ninth grade. Furthermore, we found that the characteristics of the subjects as measured by this test reflect syntactic processing ability independent of vocabulary and academic knowledge.

A critical worldwide problem is that ransomware cyberattacks can be costly to organizations. Moreover, accidental employee cybercrime risk can be challenging to prevent, even by leveraging advanced computer science techniques. This exploratory project used a novel cognitive computing design with detailed explanations of the action-research case-study methodology and customized machine learning (ML) techniques, supplemented by a workflow diagram. The ML techniques included language preprocessing, normalization, tokenization, keyword association analytics, learning tree analysis, credibility/reliability/validity checks, heatmaps, and scatter plots. The author analyzed over 8 GB of employee behavior big data from a multinational Fintech company global intranet. The five-factor personality theory (FFPT) from the psychology discipline was integrated into semi-supervised ML to classify retrospective employee behavior and then identify cybercrime risk. Higher levels of employee neuroticism were associated with a greater organizational cybercrime risk, corroborating the findings in empirical publications. In stark contrast to the literature, an openness to new experiences was inversely related to cybercrime risk. The other FFPT factors, conscientiousness, agreeableness, and extroversion, had no informative association with cybercrime risk. This study introduced an interdisciplinary paradigm shift for big data cognitive computing by illustrating how to integrate a proven scientific construct into ML—personality theory from the psychology discipline—to analyze human behavior using a retrospective big data collection approach that was asserted to be more efficient, reliable, and valid as compared to traditional methods like surveys or interviews. Especially on the Internet, popular topics in computer sciences which are artificial intelligence, big data, business analytics, data mining, data science, deep learning, and machine learning have been compared or classified using confusing Venn diagrams without any scientific proof. Relationships among the topics have been visualized in this study with the help of Venn diagrams to add scientificity to visualizations. Therefore, this study aims to determine the interactions among the seven popular topics in computer sciences. Five books for each topic (35 books) were included in the analysis. To illustrate the interactions among these topics, the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) analysis, a topic modeling analysis method, was applied. Further, the pairwise correlation was applied to determine the relationships among the chosen topics. The LDA analysis produced expected results in differentiating the topics, and pairwise correlation results revealed that all the topics are related to each other and that it is challenging to differentiate between them. Despite the growing interest in possible applications of computer science and artificial intelligence (AI) in the field of neurocritical care (neuro-ICU), widespread clinical applications are still missing. In neuro-ICU, the collection and analysis in real time of large datasets can play a crucial role in advancing this medical field and improving personalized patient care. For example, AI algorithms can detect subtle changes in brain activity or vital signs, alerting clinicians to potentially life-threatening conditions and facilitating rapid intervention. Consequently, data-driven AI and predictive analytics can greatly enhance medical decision making, diagnosis, and treatment, ultimately leading to better outcomes for patients. Nevertheless, there is a significant disparity between the current capabilities of AI systems and the potential benefits and applications that could be achieved with more advanced AI technologies. This gap is usually indicated as the AI chasm. In this paper, the underlying causes of the AI chasm in neuro-ICU are analyzed, along with proposed recommendations for utilizing AI to attain a competitive edge, foster innovation, and enhance patient outcomes. To bridge the AI divide in neurocritical care, it is crucial to foster collaboration among researchers, clinicians, and policymakers, with a focus on specific use cases. Additionally, strategic investments in AI technology, education and training, and infrastructure are needed to unlock the potential of AI technology. This article combines humanistic 'data critique' with informed inspection of big data analysis. It measures gender bias when gender prediction software tools (Gender API, Namsor, and Genderize.io) are used in historical big data research. Gender bias is measured by contrasting personally identified computer science authors in the well-regarded DBLP dataset (1950-80) with exactly comparable results from the software tools. Implications for public understanding of gender bias in computing and the nature of the computing profession are outlined. Preliminary assessment of the Semantic Scholar dataset is presented. The conclusion combines humanistic approaches with selective use of big data methods. Artificial intelligence (AI) is a field of computer science that equips machines with human-like intelligence and enables them to learn, reason, and solve problems when presented with data in various formats. Neurosurgery is often at the forefront of innovative and disruptive technologies, which have similarly altered the course of acute and chronic diseases. In diagnostic imaging, such as X-rays, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging, AI is used to analyze images. The use of robots in the field of neurosurgery is also increasing. In neurointensive care units, AI is used to analyze data and provide care to critically ill patients. Moreover, AI can be used to predict a patient's prognosis. Several AI applications have already been introduced in the field of neurosurgery, and many more are expected in the near future. Ultimately, it is our responsibility to keep pace with this evolution to provide meaningful outcomes and personalize each patient's care. Laser-plasma physics has developed rapidly over the past few decades as lasers have become both more powerful and more widely available. Early experimental and numerical research in this field was dominated by single-shot experiments with limited parameter exploration. However, recent technological improvements make it possible to gather data for hundreds or thousands of different settings in both experiments and simulations. This has sparked interest in using advanced techniques from mathematics, statistics and computer science to deal with, and benefit from, big data. At the same time, sophisticated modeling techniques also provide new ways for researchers to deal effectively with situation where still only sparse data are available. This paper aims to present an overview of relevant machine learning methods with focus on applicability to laser-plasma physics and its important sub-fields of laser-plasma acceleration and inertial confinement fusion. Due to the chaotic nature of soccer, the predictive statistical models have become in a current challenge to decision-making based on scientific evidence. The aim of the present study was to systematically identify original studies that applied machine learning (ML) to soccer data, highlighting current possibilities in ML and future applications. A systematic review of PubMed, SPORTDiscus, and FECYT (Web of Sciences, CCC, DIIDW, KJD, MEDLINE, RSCI, and SCIELO) was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. From the 145 studies initially identified, 32 were fully reviewed, and their outcome measures were extracted and analyzed. In summary, all articles were clustered into three groups: injury (n = 7); performance (n = 21), which was classified in match/league outcomes forecasting, physical/physiological forecasting, and technical/tactical forecasting; and the last group was about talent forecasting (n = 5). The development of technology, and subsequently the large amount of data available, has become ML in an important strategy to help team staff members in decision-making predicting dose-response relationship reducing the chaotic nature of this team sport. However, since ML models depend upon the amount of dataset, further studies should analyze the amount of data input needed make to a relevant predictive attempt which makes accurate predicting available. Background. Performing back trajectory and forward trajectory using the Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory Model (HYSPLIT) is a reliable approach for assessing particle transport after release among mid-field atmospheric models. HYSPLIT has an externally facing online interface that allows non-expert users to run the model trajectories without requiring extensive training or programming. However, the existing HYSPLIT interface is limited if simulations have a large amount of meteorological data and timesteps that are not coincident. The objective of this study is to design and develop a more robust tool to rapidly evaluate hazard transport conditions and to perform risk analysis, while still maintaining an intuitive and user-friendly interface. Methods. HYSPLIT calculates forward and backward trajectories of particles based on wind speed, wind direction, and the corresponding location, timestamp, and Pasquill stability classes of the regions of the atmosphere in terms of the wind speed, the amount of solar radiation, and the fractional cloud cover. The computed particle transport trajectories, combined with the online Proton Transfer Reaction-Mass Spectrometry (PTR-MS) data (https://figshare.com/articles/dataset/ARL_Data_from_ PROS_station_at_Hanford_site/19993964), can be used to identify and quantify the sources and affected area of the hazardous chemicals' emission using the potential source distribution function (PSDF). PSDF is an improved statistical function based on the well-known potential source contribution function (PSCF) in establishing the air pollutant source and receptor relationship. Performing this analysis requires a range of meteorological and pollutant concentration measurements to be statistically meaningful. The existing HYSPLIT graphical user interface (GUI) does not easily permit computations of trajectories of a dataset of meteorological data in high temporal frequency. To improve the performance of HYSPLIT computations from a large dataset and enhance risk analysis of the accidental release of material at risk, a geospatial risk analysis tool (GRAT-GUI) is created to allow large data sets to be processed instantaneously and to provide ease of visualization. Results. The GRAT-GUI is a native desktop-based application and can be run in any Windows 10 system without any internet access requirements, thus providing a secure way to process large meteorological datasets even on a standalone computer. GRAT-GUI has features to import, integrate, and convert meteorological data with various formats for hazardous chemical emission source identification and risk analysis as a self-explanatory user interface. Radiotherapy is a discipline closely integrated with computer science. Artificial intelligence (AI) has developed rapidly over the past few years. With the explosive growth of medical big data, AI promises to revolutionize the field of radiotherapy through highly automated workflow, enhanced quality assurance, improved regional balances of expert experiences, and individualized treatment guided by multi-omics. In addition to independent researchers, the increasing number of large databases, biobanks, and open challenges significantly facilitated AI studies on radiation oncology. This article reviews the latest research, clinical applications, and challenges of AI in each part of radiotherapy including image processing, contouring, planning, quality assurance, motion management, and outcome prediction. Oracle Bone Studies (OBS) benefit a lot from the introduction of computer science and artificial intelligence (AI), which changes the traditional way of organization of OBS knowledge, and results in a rapid accumulation of important research data. However, these data are not fully explored, and the processing faces challenges in the storage, representation, sharing and reuse of OBS big data, due to the lack of knowledge organization and management tools and knowledge application models for OBS. To address the two outstanding problems faced by OBS research bottleneck: high dependence on expert knowledge but low degree of knowledge sharing and reuse; poor computability and interpretability due to qualitative analysis. A new knowledge organization model carved from multiple dimensions such as refinement, fragmentation, conceptualization, networking, vectorization, and multimodal fusion is proposed. The OBS Knowledge application Pyramid (OBSKP) model is proposed from the perspective of Computational Oracle Bone Studies (COBS). The OBSKP shows the direction for the OBS research in the era of AI and provides the storage and representation standards and specifications for the subsequent OBS research data. Attribute-based encryption (ABE) cryptography is widely known for its potential to solve the scalability issue of recent public key infrastructure (PKI). It provides a fine-grained access control system with high flexibility and efficiency by labeling the secret key and ciphertext with distinctive attributes. Due to its fine-grained features, the ABE scheme is a protection layer in securing users' data and privacy in big data processing and analytics. However, quantum computing, new technology on the horizon that will transform the security and privacy environment, has begun to appear. Like the conventional ABE schemes, present cryptography is not excluded from the impacts of quantum technology as they are not made to be quantum-resistant. While most recent surveys generally touched on the generic features of attribute-based encryption schemes such as user revocation, scalability, flexibility, data confidentiality, and scope in pairing-based ABE schemes, this survey investigated quantum-resistant ABE schemes in securing big data. This survey reviews the challenges faced by the recent ABE cryptography in the post-quantum era and highlights its differences from the conventional pairing-based ABE schemes. Subsequently, we defined the criteria of an ideal quantum-resistant ABE scheme. Additionally, existing works on quantum-resistant ABE schemes are reviewed based on their algorithms design, security and functionalities. Viruses are the cause of a considerable burden to human, animal and plant health, while on the other hand playing an important role in regulating entire ecosystems. The power of new sequencing technologies combined with new tools for processing "Big Data" offers unprecedented opportunities to answer fundamental questions in virology. Virologists have an urgent need for virus-specific bioinformatics tools. These developments have led to the formation of the European Virus Bioinformatics Center, a network of experts in virology and bioinformatics who are joining forces to enable extensive exchange and collaboration between these research areas. The EVBC strives to provide talented researchers with a supportive environment free of gender bias, but the gender gap in science, especially in math-intensive fields such as computer science, persists. To bring more talented women into research and keep them there, we need to highlight role models to spark their interest, and we need to ensure that female scientists are not kept at lower levels but are given the opportunity to lead the field. A skyline query searches the data points that are not dominated by others in the dataset. It is widely adopted for many applications which require multi-criteria decision making. However, skyline query processing is considerably time-consuming for a high-dimensional large scale dataset. Parallel computing techniques are therefore needed to address this challenge, among which $MapReduce$ M a p R e d u c e is one of the most popular frameworks to process big data. A great number of efficient $MapReduce$ M a p R e d u c e skyline algorithms have been proposed in the literature and most of their designs focus on partitioning and pruning the given dataset. However, there are still opportunities for further parallelism. In this study, we propose two parallel skyline processing algorithms using a novel $LShape$ L S h a p e partitioning strategy and an effective $Propagation$ P r o p a g a t i o n $Filtering$ F i l t e r i n g method. These two algorithms are $2Phase$ 2 P h a s e $LShape$ L S h a p e and $1Phase$ 1 P h a s e $LShape$ L S h a p e , used for multiple reducers and single reducer, respectively. The prevalence of e-commerce has made customers' detailed personal information readily accessible to retailers, and this information has been widely used in pricing decisions. When using personalized information, the question of how to protect the privacy of such information becomes a critical issue in practice. In this paper, we consider a dynamic pricing problem over T time periods with an unknown demand function of posted price and personalized information. At each time t, the retailer observes an arriving customer's personal information and offers a price. The customer then makes the purchase decision, which will be utilized by the retailer to learn the underlying demand function. There is potentially a serious privacy concern during this process: a third-party agent might infer the personalized information and purchase decisions from price changes in the pricing system. Using the fundamental framework of differential privacy from computer science, we develop a privacy-preserving dynamic pricing policy, which tries to maximize the retailer revenue while avoiding information leakage of individual customer's information and purchasing decisions. To this end, we first introduce a notion of anticipating (ε , δ) -differential privacy that is tailored to the dynamic pricing problem. Our policy achieves both the privacy guarantee and the performance guarantee in terms of regret. Roughly speaking, for d-dimensional personalized information, our algorithm achieves the expected regret at the order of O ˜ (ε − 1 d 3 T) when the customers' information is adversarially chosen.
