Advancements in technology have led to the use of smartphones as biosensor detectors. However, it is difficult to obtain stable color information of colorimetric sensors using multiple smartphones owing to different light conditions and image correction operations. In this study, we attempted color detection of the colorimetric paper chip using smartphone-embedded light-emitting diode (LED) and simple transformation calculation. This method enables the acquisition of stable color information using different smartphones by reducing the influence of external light sources. Moreover, we studied characteristics such as convergence and distinction of detection result details by the manufacturers and smartphones. These findings suggested the necessity of classification criteria for the use of smartphones to achieve optimal detection. In addition, white and black references were used to set the standard for color correction of various light sources. Based on our results, we conclude that this approach presents the possibility of smartphone-based colorimetric detection in practical applications.

For the detection of product color uniformity and seam texture defects in the production process of test paper, detection methods are proposed respectively. For the detection of the color uniformity, a uniformity detection method based on dynamic light correction is proposed. The illumination correction image is used for color dynamic compensation of the test paper image to solve the influence of uneven illumination on the test paper. For the detection of texture defects such as seams, a texture defect detection method based on gray gradient aggregation intensity is proposed. This method uses one-way Gaussian convolution to strengthen features, and then calculates the gradient, divides the region and calculates the gradient extremum aggregation strength to judge texture defects, which can quickly and efficiently find seam defects. The experimental results show that the above methods have obvious effects on the color uniformity and seam detection of the test paper. The color uniformity accuracy rate is 96%, the seam detection accuracy rate is 97%. The total detection time of a single test paper is about 90ms. The algorithm is real-time and accurate, and can be used in actual production detection.

Color 3D printing is an important advancement in 3D printing for lifelike personalization, but color reproduction in paper-based color 3D printers suffers from accuracy issues. In this study, 5 color 3D test charts containing 6 thickness-increasing colored stairs with 13 specific colored bars were developed based on a thickness tunable printed layers design. At the same time, color differences and surface images of tested charts with specific layers were both captured under standard conditions. Results demonstrated that the chromatic aberrations and Mean-SSIM values of color bars showed a slight downward trend as the stair thickness increases, while the linear correlations were not obvious. Combined with color SSIM maps analysis, color samples with small differences in color quality can be clearly detected to analyze the color reproduction performance of paper-based color 3D printers. This research provides new ideas for the development of powerful color 3D test chart to check the color reproduction performance of paper-based 3D printers and predict paper-based color 3D printing.

The Artificial Intelligence (AI) Pet Robot is a combination of various fields of computer science. This paper showcases the various functionalities of our AI Pet. Most of the functionalities showcased use the immage processing modules made available through OpenCV. The pet robot has various features such as emotion recognition, follow routine, mini-game etc. This paper discusses the mini-game aspect of the robot. The game has been developed by using VGG16 convolutional network for identification of the action performed by the user. To improve the accuracy we have made use of background subtraction which gives removes all the unwanted objects from the background and gives a simple cutout of the users hand.

Purpose Electrocardiogram (ECG) is one of the most essential tools for detecting heart problems. Till today most of the ECG records are available in paper form. It can be challenging and time-consuming to manually assess the ECG paper records. Hence, automated diagnosis and analysis are possible if we digitize such paper ECG records. Methods The proposed work aims to convert ECG paper records into a 1-D signal and generate an accurate diagnosis of heart-related problems using deep learning. Camera-captured ECG images or scanned ECG paper records are used for the proposed work. Effective pre-processing techniques are used for the removal of shadow from the images. A deep learning model is used to get a threshold value that separates ECG signal from its background and after applying various image processing techniques threshold ECG image gets converted into digital ECG. These digitized 1-D ECG signals are then passed to another deep learning model for the automated diagnosis of heart diseases into different classes such as ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), Left Bundle Branch Block (LBBB), Right Bundle Branch Block (RBBB), and T-wave abnormality. Results The accuracy of deep learning-based binarization is 97%. Further deep learning-based diagnosis approach of such digitized paper ECG records was having an accuracy of 94.4%. Conclusions The digitized ECG signals can be useful to various research organizations because the trends in heart problems can be determined and diagnosed from preserved paper ECG records. This approach can be easily implemented in areas where such expertise is not available. Paper surfaces under the microscopic view are observed to be formed by intertwisted wood fibers. Such structures of paper surfaces are unique from one location to another and are almost impossible to duplicate. Previous work used microscopic surface normals to characterize such intrinsic structures as a “fingerprint” of paper for security and forensic applications. In this work, we examine several key research questions of feature extraction in both scientific and engineering aspects to facilitate the deployment of paper surface-based authentication when flatbed scanners are used as the acquisition device. We analytically show that, under the unique optical setup of flatbed scanners, the specular reflection does not play a role in norm map estimation. We verify, using a larger dataset than prior work, that the scanner-acquired norm maps, although blurred, are consistent with those measured by confocal microscopes. We confirm that, when choosing an authentication feature, high spatial-frequency subbands of the heightmap are more powerful than the norm map. Finally, we show that it is possible to empirically calculate the physical dimensions of the paper patch needed to achieve a certain authentication performance in equal error rate (EER). We analytically show that log(EER) is decreasing linearly in the edge length of a paper patch.

We studied the feasibility of image-based quantitative analysis of foxing stains on collections of old (16th&ndash, 20th century) European books stored in the Rare Book Library of the Seoul National University in Korea. We were able to quantitatively determine the foxing affected areas on books from their photographs using a newly developed image processing software (PicMan) including cultural property characterization applications, specifically. Dimensional and color analysis of photographs were successfully done quantitatively. Histograms of RGB (red, green, blue) pixels of photographs clearly showed the change in color distribution of foxing stains compared to the other areas of the photographs. Several sample images of quantitative measurement of foxing stains and virtually restored images were generated to provide easy visual inspection and comparison between restored images and the original photographs. Image quality, resolution, and digital file format requirements for quantitative analysis are described. Image-based quantitative analysis of foxing stains on paper documents are found to be very promising towards automation for objective characterization of photographs of cultural properties. This technique can be used to create a cultural property digital database. Quantitative and statistical analysis techniques can be introduced to monitor the effect of storage and conservation environment on the cultural properties.

A paper-based colorimeter for absorbance and concentration measurement of the food colouring dye is proposed. The paper-based colorimeter system consists of a white LED as light source, paper-based cuvette holder, and smartphone light sensor. The paper-based colorimeter with smartphone light sensor is low-cost, mobile and real-time for the detection of colouring dye concentration. The detection response of the paper-based colorimeter system was found to be linear with the colouring dye concentration in the range from 0 to 0.025 g/mL with a correlation coefficient (R2) 0.89±0.04. The experimental results show that this paper-based colorimeter system is highly sensitive and have a potential application, from student labs to small industries.

Colorimetric tests are becoming increasingly popular in point-of-need analyses due to the possibility of detecting the signal with the naked eye, which eliminates the utilization of bulky and costly instruments only available in laboratories. However, colorimetric tests may be interpreted incorrectly by nonspecialists due to disparities in color perception or a lack of training. Here we solve this issue with a method that not only detects colorimetric signals but also interprets them so that the test outcome is understandable for anyone. It consists of an augmented reality (AR) app that uses a camera to detect the colored signals generated by a nanoparticle-based immunoassay, and that yields a warning symbol or message when the concentration of analyte is higher than a certain threshold. Photographs are taken as valid evidences in various scenarios of our day to day life. Because of the developments in the field of Image Processing, altering images according to ones need is not a difficult task. Techniques of Image Forensics play its crucial role at this juncture. One of the mostly found types of image tampering is Copy-Move forgery. A copy-move forgery is performed by copying a region in an image and pasting it on another region in the same image, mostly after some form of post-processing like rotation, scaling, blurring, noise addition, JPEG compression etc. Two types of copy-move forgery detection techniques exist in literature. They are the Block based methods and Key-point based methods. Both the methods have their own advantages and limitations. This paper presents a survey on the recent developments in block based methods. As forgeries have become popular, the importance of forgery detection is much increased. Copy-move forgery, one of the most commonly used methods, copies a part of the image and pastes it into another part of the image. In this paper, we propose a detection method of copy-move forgery that localizes duplicated regions using Zernike moments. Since the magnitude of Zernike moments is algebraically invariant against rotation, the proposed method can detect a forged region even though it is rotated. Our scheme is also resilient to the intentional distortions such as additive white Gaussian noise, JPEG compression, and blurring. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme is appropriate to identify the forged region by copy-rotate-move forgery.

Paper-based assay platforms play an important role among rapid test methods. It is essential to combine these promising platforms with smartphones which make on-site analysis possible without using external image processors. In this study, the performance of paper-based glucose assay methods was investigated by using the L*a*b* color space as the quantitative measurement. For this purpose, two glucose assay methods, namely quinone and iodine, were compared in terms of linearity, limit of detection (LOD) and reliability. A lower LOD and higher sensitivity were obtained by the quinone method while the iodine method may lead to large indeterminate errors due to the formation of non-uniform color distribution. Moreover, color measurement strategies were tested by using both computer software and mobile applications. For this purpose, scanned images were processed on a computer and the results were compared with smartphone based color measurements. The lowest LOD value of 0.38 mM glucose was obtained with the mobile application running on an Android operating system. Finally, glucose assay was performed on sour cherry nectar and honey and the results were compared with the spectrophotometric glucose assay. Using smartphones and the L*a*b* color space appears to be promising for reliable paper-based sensing as they are totally portable.

In production, poor ergonomic environments not only lead to increased workloads and health hazards for employees but also tend to reduce efficiency and quality. Recently, the human-cyber-physical (HCP) system has been proposed and widely studies to meet human capabilities and limitations. However, most existing frameworks are still not adaptive enough to integrate humans into a smart production environment due to a lack of real-time individual human factors digitalization. This research proposes an HCP workstation model for comprehensive assembly resources digitalization and autonomous interaction by CPS enabling technologies. Based on this, an adaptive control system has been developed for proactive ergonomic risk mitigation. Computer vision is deployed for real-time individual ergonomic evaluation and a prototype has been set up for functional validation.

In our MM'20 paper,, we presented a Kalman filter-based approach for prediction of head motion in 6DoF. The proposed approach was employed in our cloud-based volumetric video streaming system to reduce the interaction latency experienced by the user. In this companion paper, we present the dataset collected for our experiments and our simulation framework that reproduces the obtained experimental results. Our implementation is freely available on Github to facilitate further research.

Currently, racial oil blotting papers are counted by hand. However, it takes a long time and this is hard work. Hence, an automatic counting system is necessary. In order to achieve this, we developed a cheap system using a webcam. This system firstly captures one image of arranged papers by shifting. Secondly, the paper boundaries are obtained as straight lines by utilizing the proposed image processing. By counting the acquired lines, the system outputs the number of papers. However, the captured image has noises such as the change of illumination and shadows. They make the extraction of the accurate boundaries difficult. For the accurate extraction, optimal parameters of the image processing must be set. Since the prediction of the optimal parameters in advance is difficult, the proposed method adopts genetic algorithm (GA). Also, Hough transformation for the straight line detection is improved. By applying the proposed method, the accurate paper counting is possible. For the experiment, 14 images were captured in various environments using a general webcam. Then, the proposed method was compared to a latest related work. As a result, F-measure of each method was 0.995 and 0.945.

Because of the cost and complexity of implementing an optical paper sorting system, the demand for an intelligent system for waste paper sorting has increased. This research focused on the development of a smart intelligent system (SIS) for recyclable waste paper sorting. The basis for selecting the regions of interests (ROIs) is the margin area of a paper object image because almost all printed documents keep the margin area intact. The paper grade is identified using a proximity search. The SIS with the HSI colour space offered maximum success rates of 99 %, 82 % and 89 %, while with the RGB model, the classification success rates were 94 %, 93 % and 98 % for white paper, old newsprint paper and old corrugated cardboard, respectively. The SIS is clearly superior to other prevailing techniques because of the faster decision making and lower cost of implementation.

Number plate recognition brings a drastic improvement for the city traffic enhancement. It provides the direction in which the steps should be taken for working of an effective intelligent transportation system. ANPR have become necessity for traffic control management due to rapid increment of vehicles. The main aim of ANPR is to monitor traffic and for security purpose. Recognition of number plate uses image processing techniques and latest technology in detecting characters on vehicle license plates automatically. In recent years, there are many technological developments in recognizing license plate area of research. Image processing protocols like OCR technology allow the traffic surveillance to deal with several problems that occurs in criminal investigation, toll collection, monitoring traffic, controlling speed, parking management etc. For efficient management of traffic and mass surveillance in transportation system, an ANPR system is essential. With the aid of image processing algorithms and vehicle images dataset, it becomes possible to monitor traffic at a large scale. Vehicle images are helpful for recognizing characters on license plates by performing image segmentation, feature extraction and character recognition. Data collected through captured images are utilized in the commercial applications, law enforcement, traffic applications etc. The software examines the vehicle picture as an input image that results in displaying the plate numbers. The system with image processing used reliably for traffic detection where modification of the technologies enables an accurate acknowledgement of vehicle number plates. There are several ANPR systems developed, working on character recognition of LP by the help of image processing technique. This paper reviews the performance by researchers in this particular area towards meeting goals of transportation system. It also provides major issues and challenges in this field.

The data hiding techniques have attracted a lot of attention in recent years and mainly with the intensive growth of multimedia and its possibility for covert communication. Steganography is one of the information hiding methods to confirm the ability of a multimedia carrier to exchange secret information between two end-points so that it is imperceptible, thus avoiding the detection of hidden information. The secret information can be embedded in several multimedia carriers, such as image or audio or video files. It works by embedding the message in a source cover which may make the observer feel it is the source cover itself. The type of multimedia carrier here is an image. However, this technique suffers from the problem of the carrier distortion. In this paper, we investigate the impact of some distortion types on the carrier images and discuss the possibility of using distraction images in steganography to protect the stego-image. Furthermore, we highlight the current challenges of image steganography. The experimentations show very interesting results.

Forgery of paper invoices and certificates negatively causes huge economic loss every year. In the molding process of paper, plant fibres inside will distribute randomly and form the unique microscopic surface. Accordingly, forensic researchers have presented many techniques to build its feature descriptor for paper anti-counterfeiting. Among those methods, normal vector field and reconstructed surface based on multi-view photos captured by mobile camera have indicated incredibly effectiveness and practicality. However, the inefficiency of existing models using mobile camera is the neck in real time detection scenarios. In this paper, we focus on the efficient microstructure orientation estimation of paper surface for authentication. To address this problem, we investigate the reflection characteristics of rough surface and quantify the light attenuation accurately. Then, we model the entire propagation path of light emitted by flash, and exploit single photo captured by mobile camera to reconstruct microscopic inclination based on beam energy loss. Reduction of required pictures significantly enhances forensics efficiency. Through comparison experiments, we demonstrate that our proposed method can be used for paper discrimination effectively with speedy feature extraction.

The authors present a comprehensive overview of image processing and analysis work done to support research into the model flowering plant Arabidopsis thaliana. Beside the plant's importance in biological research, using image analysis to obtain experimental measurements of it is an interesting vision problem in its own right, involving the segmentation and analysis of sequences of images of objects whose shape varies between individual specimens and also changes over time. While useful measurements can be obtained by segmenting a whole plant from the background, they suggest that the increased range and precision of measurements made available by leaf-level segmentation makes this a problem well worth solving. A variety of approaches have been tried by biologists as well as computer vision researchers. This is an interdisciplinary area and the computer vision community has an important contribution to make. They suggest that there is a need for publicly available datasets with ground truth annotations to enable the evaluation of new approaches and to support the building of training data for modern data-driven computer vision approaches, which are those most likely to result in the kind of fully automated systems that will be of use to biologists.

In order to better solve the problem of automatic identification of quality control line and detection line in the detection of gold standard test strip, this paper proposes to collect the image information of gold standard test strip after color rendering through CMOS sensor, preprocess the obtained information, transform RGB image into gray image, build cloud model in the CIELAB/HSV/HSL space, and apply the improved AdaBoost algorithm to determine the position of detection line and quality control line Place. Compared with the traditional template matching method, it improves the accuracy and accuracy of recognition.

Background: No established method for digitizing and digital measuring of paper electrocardiograms (ECG) exists. We describe a paper ECG digitizing and digital measuring process, and report comparability to manual measurements. Methods: A paper ECG was recorded from 7203 health survey participants in 1978-1980. With specific software, the ECGs were digitized (ECG Trace Tool), and measured digitally (EASE). A sub-sample of 100 ECGs was selected for manual measurements. Results: The measurement methods showed good agreement. The mean global (EASE)-(manual) differences were 1.4 ms (95% CI 0.5-2.2) for PR interval, 1.0 ms (95% CI 1.5 [-0.5]) for QRS duration, and 11.6 ms (95% CI 10.5-12.7) for QT interval. The mean inter-method amplitude differences of RampV5, RampV6, SampV1, TampII and TampV5 ranged from 0.03 mV to 0.01 mV. Conclusions: The presented paper-to-digital conversion and digital measurement process is an accurate and reliable method, enabling efficient storing and analysis of paper ECGs. Colorimetric detection using microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (µPADs) and smartphones enable lowcost mobile chemical analysis solutions. However, variable illumination conditions and phone characteristics (i.e. camera hardware and software capabilities) limit the accurate interpretation and reproducibility of quantitative results. In this paper, we describe a method to automatically compensate an image captured by a smartphone camera under variable illumination conditions. By incorporating a two-step algorithm, we approximate the mobile camera picture color distribution to resemble a laboratory-grade measurement under reference illumination conditions. For every test image, the algorithm first applies a color mapping step that performs histogram matching of a set of color reference spots printed on the device to a laboratory reference measurement. After this initial correction step, a transformation matrix is computed via a least-square fit to minimize the differences between the device and the laboratory references. This matrix is then applied to the RGB channel values obtained from a µPAD to correct for illumination variations. The methodology was tested by correcting a test dataset captured using a smartphone to approximate to a calibration dataset acquired using a lab-grade camera. After correction, the relative error between the datasets fell to 10-20%, leading to an increase in classification accuracy between 12-33%. This approach enables colorimetric chemical analysis with smartphones outside the lab, removing the need to control external lighting conditions.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are reported to be the leading cause of death worldwide by World Health Organization (WHO) with an approximate of 31% of global deaths. Consequently, it has been noted that the largest sector of population which experiences coagulation or hemostatic imbalances or undergo oral anticoagulation therapy (OAT) are the major sector susceptible to the risk of mortality due to cardiovascular ailments such as atherosclerosis, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), stroke etc. These candidates are prescribed or administered using oral anticoagulation therapy (OAT) and are advised to take the Prothrombin Time (PT) test respectively. Prothrombin Time (PT) analyzers are the type of haemostasis analyzer mainly catering to the coagulation following the extrinsic pathways. Additionally, the candidates under OAT requires routine administration of the coagulation status for proper dosage of warfarin or its derivatives which shares a very narrow therapeutic window. A slight amount of imbalance in the coagulation chemistry can disrupt the cardiovascular functioning, hence a routine monitoring is strongly mandated by cardiac surgeons. It is important to realize a simplified hand held, low cost point of care solution for diagnosing hemostasis or coagulation status to cater both the rural and urban sectors resulting in lower casualties due to coagulation imbalance. The respective work proposes a handheld point of care PT sensing paper sensor using very inexpensive pencil and correction pen and Whattman filter paper. In addition the sensor has enhanced capability of carrying our sensitive detection of coagulation status compared to the existing complex and expensive sensors developed through a variety of methods like screen printing, lithography, flexography printing, wax printing, PDMS printing, stamping etc. The proposed device consists of two pencil marks as electrodes. The device is illustrated in Figure 1. The sensor monitors a change in impedance (resistance) w.r.t time. Blood being an ionic fluid whose chemistry changes with the ionic interactions during the process of coagulation results in a direct correlation of the coagulation process to the respective impedimetric signatures. The synthetic coagulation behavior and the response of the device has been measure using nail paint as an analyte. The points of maximum changes in resistance (first and second) denotes the application of the analyte to the sensor and initiation of coagulation or solidification respectively (shown in Figure 2) from which the coagulation time is further derived. Lab View has been used as an interfacing platform for processing the respective resistive data and generating corresponding coagulation status. Thus, the particular PDE-PAD (pencil drawn electrodes- paper-based analytical devices) can be considered as a promising future device for low cost sensitive detection platform for a point of care PT diagnosis.
