The article examines the design of Cell Broadband Engine or Cell processor which is jointly developed by International Business Machines Corp., Sony Corp., and Toshiba and offers insights into its communication and synchronization tools. The technology minimizes pipeline depth and increases memory bandwidth to allow simultaneous in-flight memory transactions and improve power efficiency. It has also considered three design issues that limit the system's performance including bandwidth, memory latency, and power.
