This book examines lifelong learning in the Information Age and the role of higher education (HE) in providing the educational services needed by lifelong learners. A definition of the term "Wellfleet Source Routing Bridging" (Wellfleet SRB) is presented. It refers to the proprietary header of Bay Networks, now part of Nortel, that processes Token Ring information over Wide Area Network (WAN) lines.

A definition of the term "Wireless Bridge" is presented. In the contest of wireless communication system, this refers to a networking bridge that connects two or more separate networks. In situations wherein running a wire or cable is impractical or prohibitively expensive, a wireless bridge can be used.

A definition of the term "Wavelength Routing Protocol" (WaRP) is presented. It refers to a protocol that enables the provisioning, routing, protection and restoration of virtual wavelength paths (VWP) through an optical network based on intelligent communication between Cisco 15900 Series Wavelength Routers.

A definition of the term "Virtual Path Identifier (VPI)" is presented. It refers to a routing label used in the asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) header. The VPI identifies the next destination of a cell as it passes through a series of ATM switches on its way to its destination. It is noted that a VPI field has eight to twelve bits.

A definition of the term "unnumbered acknowledgement" (UA) is presented. It refers to a data link command or encoding used as a response that acknowledges the receipt and acceptance of the Set Asynchronous Balance Mode (SABM), SABME and DISC command protocol data units. Delivery of these messages is not ACKed or NACKed by the receiver and do not contain a sequence number.

A definition of the term "Traceroute" in computer networking is presented. Originally written by Van Jacobson in 1988, traceroute is a Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) utility which allows the user to determine the route packets taken to reach a particular host. The term also refers to both a utility and the output of the utility.

A definition of the term "Stub Network" is presented. This refers to a network with only a single connection to a router. It has a single Open Shortest Path First area with no external routes. A stub network also features a single local area network that never carries packets between two remote hosts.

A definition of the term "StreetTalk" in computer networking is presented. The term refers to an application protocol in the VINES protocol stack which maintains a distributed directory of the names of network resources. The names are global across the Internet and independent of the network topology.

A definition of the term "Service Type" is presented. It refers to a component of a service package that service providers offer to subscribers. A bandwidth might be a service type defined for a subscriber, indicating the minimum or maximum bandwidth the subscriber can use.

It refers to a computer network of many, spacially distributed devices using sensors to monitor conditions at different locations, such as temperature, sound, vibration, pressure, motion or pollutants. Each device is equipped with a radio transceiver, a small microcontroller, and an energy source, usually a battery.

A definition of the term "Route Summarization" is presented. In networking, this term refers to a mechanism used to design networks which perform better and are more flexible. Route summarization is also known as Internet Protocol route summarization. This required consolidation of advertised addresses that cause a single summary route to be advertised.

A definition of the term "Repeater" is presented. The term refers to a type of network device that regenerates incoming electrical, wireless or optical signals. With physical media like Ethernet or Wi-Fi, data transmissions can only span a limited distance before the quality of the signal degrades. Repeaters attempt to preserve signal integrity.

A definition of the term "Relay" is presented. It refers to an electromechanical device by which the variation in current in one circuit causes the opening or closing of contacts. It is also a process of retransmitting signals or messages through an intermediate point or repeater. In OSI networking, it refers to a device that connects network systems.

A definition of the term "Registration" is presented. It refers to the process by which a mobile station informs the immediate service provider of its presence in the network.

A definition of the term "proxy server" is presented. Also called proxy, it refers to a system that allows clients to make indirect network connections to other network services. It is indicated that the proxy provides the resource by connecting to the specified server or by serving it from a cache. According to the article, the proxy may sometimes alter the client's request or the server's response for various purposes.

A definition of the term "profile of user" is presented. In a Windows environment, it refers to a record of user-specific data that defines the user's working environment. It is noted that the record can include network connections, display settings, and application settings. According to the article, what the user sees on the computer screen is determined by how the network administrator has set up the user's profile.

A definition of the term "Print Server" in relation to computer hardware and computer network system is presented. It refers to a networked computer that holds a connection of one or more printers and which performs print jobs from other network's computers.

A definition of the term "PPP Multilink Protocol" is presented. It refers to a method for splitting, recombining and sequencing datagrams across multiple logical data links. It is based on an LCP password recovery tool option negotiation that allows a system to indicate that it is capable of combining multiple physical links into a "bundle."

A definition of the term "parallelism" in the context of networking is presented. This term indicates that multiple paths, which might be of equal or unequal cost, exist between two points in a network. As a network design goal, parallelism ensures the existence of an alternate path to the same point where one path fails.

A definition of the term "Packet Data Convergence Protocol (PDCP)" is presented. It refers to the protocol used in UMTS 3G network to map higher-level protocol characteristics onto the characteristics of the underlying radio-interface protocols. It is added that PDCP provides protocol control information compression.

A definition of the term "Null Modem" is presented. It refers to a communication method of connecting two DTEs, such as computers and printers, using an RS-232 seial cable. While the original RS-232 standard only defined the connection of DTEs with DCEs, a null modem connection crosslinks the transmit and receive lines.

A definition of the term "Media Gateway" (MGW) is presented. It refers to a unit connecting different types of networks, and performs translation between disparate networks. It also enables multimedia communications across Next Generation Networks over multiple transport protocols. It cites one of its functions.

A definition of the term "Internet Protocol (IP) Address Management (IPAM)" is presented. It refers to the system which allows the allocation, classification and tracking of Internet Protocol addresses. IPAM systems offer services such as immediate access to information which is important in eliminating conflicts and network outages, tracking critical assets and troubleshooting network problems, among others.

A definition of the term "High-Speed Serial Interface" is presented. It is a DTE/DCE interface that was developed by Cisco Systems and T3 plus Networking to address the need for high-speed communications over Wide Area Network links.

A definition of the term "Hierarchical Virtual Private LAN Service" (HVPLS) is presented. The service is introduced to improve the scalability of Virtual Private LAN Service, which is a layer 2 Virtual Private Network services over Ethernet networks. Its standards allow the creation of hierarchies with hub-and-spoke arrangement.

A definition of the term "GG45" is presented. It refers to a connector for high speed CAT7 local area network cabling developed by Nexans. The cabling system was standardized in 2001 as IEC 60603-7-7 and was selected as the worldwide CAT7 cabling standard within ISO11801. It is a 2-in-1 solution which provides backwards compatibility for standard RJ45 connectors in a CAT6 interface, where eight conductors are used for CAT6 operation.
