We review several node architectures for optical slot switching ring networks, which can be used in metropolitan or datacenter applications, and compare them for their networking aspects. The dimensioning, quality of service, latency, and protection issues are discussed for the different approaches. The main devices, i.e. fast wavelength-tunable laser, burst-mode coherent receiver (which is required to enable high data rate transmission at 100 Gb/s and above), and a slot blocker for improved wavelength usage efficiency are described, and available technologies for each key building block are reviewed. Abstract

A resilience analysis of protection cycles ( p-cycle) configurations for Double Rings with Dual Attachment (DRDAs) architectures is presented in this work. DRDAs are composed of two rings with corresponding nodes connected by two separated links. There are several possible configurations of p-cycles, which may be used in DRDAs for improving link or node protection upon link failure. The values of the parameters Mean Time To Failure and Mean Time To Disconnection are analysed in the paper to show the best choice of p-cycles in DRDAs architectures. Abstract

This article offers background information on passive optical network (PON) access technologies. A view of ultra-long-haul Wide Area Network (WAN), long-haul WAN, and Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) holds that three communication-network structures are fractal relatives. All apply similar strategies to the exploitation of finite physical media and their corresponding bandwidths. All optimize media use by aggregating and de-aggregating heterogeneous payload data. All differ by scalar factors of internode distance, data-rate, and total aggregated traffic. The combination of address-tagged data and data aggregation allows communications systems to map an infinitely complex point-to-multipoint network model into an affordable, robust point-to-point structure. Among the advantages of PON over traditional access technologies is that, like the MAN and WAN segments, PON allows access networks to carry aggregated data, at least on a small scale. A PON system's head end, called the optical-line terminal, and subscriber interfaces called optical-network units, include a media-access controller, an optical transmitter and optical receiver, and a wavelength-division multiplexer. Generally, PON in all its flavors is a physical-layer technology, and as such, exists beneath the link layer in the Open Systems Interconnection hierarchy. INSETS: AT A GLANCE;FOR MORE INFORMATION….

They are articles that contain original research, surveys, and case studies. The articles have a tutorial style. The articles cover topics from various parts of the networking stack. Starting from the lower parts of the stack, researchers Ping Yuan, Violeta Gambiroza and Edward Knightly present the IEEE 802.17 standards efforts for metropolitan area networks; and researchers Yang Chen, Chunming Qiao and Xiang Yu review optical burst switching, and present recent work and open issues in this area. From the middle of the researchers stack, J. William Atwood presents an interesting classification of a number of reliable multicast protocols; and researchers Dahai Xu, Yizhi Xiong and Chunming Qiao highlight the significance of the trap problem in networks with shared risk link groups (SRLGs) and compare various protection schemes for SRLGs. Finally, from the upper parts of the stack, researchers Kin-Yeung Wong, Kai-Hau Yeung and Kwok-Fai Law present an architecture to reduce the number of TCP connections when proxies are used to access a Web server; and researchers Roch H.
