Virtual labs have proven to be very versatile and valuable for providing realistic experience for students in STE (Science, Technology, and Engineering) fields. As we progress from delivery of instructional material from classroom to the Internet, there is need to develop laboratory exercises to supplement the theoretical lessons. A Web-based virtual simulation model of an anaerobic digester (AD) using a flexible Javascript-based platform was developed to support courses in process control and process design. The objective was to provide a virtual laboratory experience that could be used on any device capable of accessing the Web (laptops, tablets, or smartphones) to explore multiple facets (design, operation, control, and optimization) associated with a complex biochemical system. A user-friendly interface that allows easy specification and testing of operational parameters is provided. In this article, we discuss how the model and simulation is developed and deployed along with illustrative examples of its use in a training or educational environment.

A computer simulation application on pharmacokinetics, which we developed using a software, named "Stella®", has been successfully used for the virtual training of pharmacokinetics at multiple medical schools. The training course using Stella® has encouraged the medical students to optimize drug administration for individual patients on the computers. Importantly, the virtual training is free of any concern on human and animal ethics. The simulation application has been freely provided for medical schools without any restrictions and charge. For many years, it has been under constant version-upgrade in response to updates of the operating systems (OS) of personal computers or the software. Very recently, major updates of the OS and the software, and the emergence of tablet- and smartphones-type computers have been prompting us to perform a major revision of the simulation application. Here, we introduce the new version of the "web-based" simulation application that is available through any device including personal computers, tablets, and smartphones irrespective of the OSs (Microsoft Windows and Macintosh, Android, and iOS), without any extra charge unless the modification is required. We believe that the new-version of web-based simulation application will be useful not only for medical, nursing and pharmacy students, but also for medical workers who need to simulate drug pharmacokinetics on the computers before they administer drugs to the patients.

For the validation of vehicular Electrical Distribution Systems (EDS), engineers are currently required to analyze disperse information regarding technical requirements, standards and datasheets. Moreover, an enormous effort takes place to elaborate testing plans that are representative for most EDS possible configurations. These experiments are followed by laborious data analysis. To diminish this workload and the need for physical resources, this work reports a simulation platform that centralizes the tasks for testing different EDS configurations and assists the early detection of inadequacies in the design process. A specific procedure is provided to develop a software tool intended for this aim. Moreover, the described functionalities are exemplified considering as a case study the main wire harness from a commercial vehicle. A web-based architecture has been employed in alignment with the ongoing software development revolution and thus provides flexibility for both, developers and users. Due to its scalability, the proposed software scheme can be extended to other web-based simulation applications. Furthermore, the automatic generation of electrical layouts for EDS is addressed to favor an intuitive understanding of the network. To favor human–information interaction, utilized visual analytics strategies are also discussed. Finally, full simulation workflows are exposed to provide further insights on the deployment of this type of computer platforms.

In systems biology, biological phenomena are often modeled by Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs) and distributed in the de facto standard file format SBML. The primary analyses performed with such models are dynamic simulation, steady-state analysis, and parameter estimation. These methodologies are mathematically formalized, and libraries for such analyses have been published. Several tools exist to create, simulate, or visualize models encoded in SBML. However, setting up and establishing analysis environments is a crucial hurdle for non-modelers. Therefore, easy access to perform fundamental analyses of ODE models is a significant challenge. We developed SBMLWebApp, a web-based service to execute SBML-based simulation, steady-state analysis, and parameter estimation directly in the browser without the need for any setup or prior knowledge to address this issue. SBMLWebApp visualizes the result and numerical table of each analysis and provides a download of the results. SBMLWebApp allows users to select and analyze SBML models directly from the BioModels Database. Taken together, SBMLWebApp provides barrier-free access to an SBML analysis environment for simulation, steady-state analysis, and parameter estimation for SBML models. SBMLWebApp is implemented in Java™ based on an Apache Tomcat® web server using COPASI, the Systems Biology Simulation Core Library (SBSCL), and LibSBMLSim as simulation engines. SBMLWebApp is licensed under MIT with source code freely available. At the end of this article, the Data Availability Statement gives the internet links to the two websites to find the source code and run the program online.

The implementation of a web-based application to estimate the path loss in outdoor environments is presented in this article. The tool provides the results of an empirical formulation in a user-friendly interface. The benefit of the proposed system is that the required information of the environment is obtained from OpenStreetMap, which allows the calculation of the propagation everywhere easily. In addition, the formulation is applicable to both rural and urban environments. The web application has been implemented using HTML5 and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)3. The open source JavaScript library Leaflet has been used to include interactive maps. The simulation tool has been validated with measurements in a real environment. A good agreement between simulated and measured results has been found.

Background In response to the closure of universities and the cancelling of in-person classes due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this study was designed to focus on a solution for adapting simulation-based education to this situation. Method A mixed study was conducted to analyze nursing students’ satisfaction and perceptions (n=48) about simulated nursing video consultations. Results Nursing students expressed a high level of satisfaction and positive perceptions about this innovative proposal. Conclusions Simulated nursing video consultations could be considered as another choice of high-fidelity simulation not only in the current COVID-19 situation, but its use could be extended to other contexts., Highlights • Despite the confinement by COVID-19, nursing students participated in simulation sessions. • Students expressed a high level of satisfaction with simulated nursing video consultations. • They were trained in healthcare education for prevention of COVID-19 contagion. • Simulated nursing video consultations may be an option for high-fidelity simulation training. • These could be extended to other contexts, as they are the future of healthcare.

The development of open science has resulted in the sharing of a greater amount of information including research processes as well as research results. We are developing a platform, EDISON (EDucation-research Integration through Simulation on the Net) to further promote the open science practice in the fields of computational science and engineering. The EDISON platform not only provides an online service of simulations developed by computational scientists and engineers, but also an environment for sharing source codes, data, and related publications. An efficient management system for simulation software programs is required to ensure the service quality of the EDISON platform. This study proposes a registration and management system that introduces simulation software programs developed by computational researchers to EDISON. The developer can register the simulation software programs on EDISON using our system, and establish an effective web-based simulation environment without administrator intervention.

Summary This paper discusses the implementation, architecture, and use of a graphical web-based application called ReliaCloud-NS that allows users to (1) evaluate the reliability of a cloud computing system (CCS) and (2) design a CCS to a specified reliability level for both public and private clouds. The software was designed with a RESTful application programming interface for performing nonsequential Monte Carlo simulations to perform reliability evaluations of a CCS. Simulation results are stored and presented to the user in the form of interactive charts and graphs from within a web browser. The software contains multiple types of CCS components, simulations, and virtual machine allocation schemes. ReliaCloud-NS also contains a novel feature that evaluates CCS reliability across a range of varying virtual machine allocations and establishes and graphs a CCS reliability curve. This paper discusses the software architecture, the interactive web-based interface, and the different types of simulations available in ReliaCloud-NS and presents an overview of the results generated from a simulation.

Web engineering is a systematic approach to develop web applications, and numerous web engineering methods have been proposed. These methods were extended through defining new models by using different mechanisms to capture the web application concepts. Due to the complexity rising of web applications, the web engineering methods cannot provide web solutions anymore. Even though Interaction Flow Modeling Language (IFML) is recently proposed as a new method for developing web applications, it has limitations. Therefore these methods need to be improved. In this paper, we present the ability of IFML extensibility to support new concerns from web applications. Moreover, we extend IFML through UML mechanisms to support new concerns from the context to the user interface. The new IFML solves the lack of context web application through defining a new model and becomes a new direction to develop concerns modern web applications.

This article illustrated the development of a web simulation system based on Matlab distributed parallel cluster. The web simulation system construct a visual and controllable simulation interface using javascript and Asynchronous JavaScript and XML(AJAX) technology. In order to realize the Matlab resources dynamic allocation and management, elastic resources management method has been adopted. To achieve the multi-user concurrent access, the resource management system has been designed by adopting principle of feedback control and principle of Apache Hadoop Yet Another Resource Negotiator(YARN). The feasibility of this system demonstrated through application of simulation and practical use.

Nowadays, web applications play a significant role in the success of the business. Web applications have grown very fast in the current market. They bring new challenges for the researchers in the area of testing, such as heterogeneous representation, dynamic behavior, data flow mechanism, control flow mechanism and some more issues relevant to web applications. This paper presents an approach for model-based dynamic web application testing. This approach considers server side scripting language to test the functional requirements of the web applications. In this approach, first the implicit class object tags are extracted from JSP pages, and the JSP Flow Graph (JFG) is constructed for tracing the requirements using the proposed algorithm JTSG. Then, the test scenarios and concrete test cases are generated for the given web application.

The maturation of the Web platform has given rise to sophisticated and demanding Web applications such as interactive 3D visualization, audio and video software, and games. With that, efficiency and security of code on the Web has become more important than ever. Yet JavaScript as the only built-in language of the Web is not well-equipped to meet these requirements, especially as a compilation target. Engineers from the four major browser vendors have risen to the challenge and collaboratively designed a portable low-level bytecode called WebAssembly. It offers compact representation, efficient validation and compilation, and safe low to no-overhead execution. Rather than committing to a specific programming model, WebAssembly is an abstraction over modern hardware, making it language-, hardware-, and platform-independent, with use cases beyond just the Web. WebAssembly has been designed with a formal semantics from the start. We describe the motivation, design and formal semantics of WebAssembly and provide some preliminary experience with implementations.

Background Systems Biology Markup Language (SBML) is the standard model representation and description language in systems biology. Enriching and analysing systems biology models by integrating the multitude of available data, increases the predictive power of these models. This may be a daunting task, which commonly requires bioinformatic competence and scripting. Results We present SBMLmod, a Python-based web application and service, that automates integration of high throughput data into SBML models. Subsequent steady state analysis is readily accessible via the web service COPASIWS. We illustrate the utility of SBMLmod by integrating gene expression data from different healthy tissues as well as from a cancer dataset into a previously published model of mammalian tryptophan metabolism. Conclusion SBMLmod is a user-friendly platform for model modification and simulation. The web application is available at http://sbmlmod.uit.no, whereas the WSDL definition file for the web service is accessible via http://sbmlmod.uit.no/SBMLmod.wsdl. Furthermore, the entire package can be downloaded from https://github.com/MolecularBioinformatics/sbml-mod-ws. Service-oriented approach for model coupling is gradually gaining momentum. By leveraging the World Wide Web, the service-oriented approach lowers the interoperability barrier of integrating models in terms of programming languague and operating system. While such paradigm has been applied to integrate models wrapped with some standard interfaces, this paper considers the Basic Model Interface (BMI) as model interface. The advantages of BMI are that it (1) enrich the semantics of variable names, and (2) is framework-agnostic. We exposed the BMI-enabled models through web services. Then, a smart modeling framework, the Experimental Modeling Environment for Linking and Interoperability (EMELI), was enhanced into a web application (i.e., EMELI-Web) to integrate the BMI-enabled web service models. By implementing the whole orchestration in coupling TopoFlow components, we demonstrate that BMI helps connect web service models by reducing the heterogeneity of variable names, and EMELI-Web makes it convenient to couple BMI-enabled web service models.

This paper describes the architecture of AgentSimJs, a Javascript-based multi-agent simulator intended to execute and visualize simulations through a Web browser. It includes the needed capabilities to render a 3D scene with objects and agents. AgentSimJs has a modular architecture, the several different components provide a set of flexible primitives to program the agent behaviour. With AgentSimJs, a user can perform a fine tuning of all the aspects related to communication, motion, and group formation. Users can also define a custom network topology and communication model.

Rapid web technology improvements in the last few years have powered software developers to quickly write responsive mobile-friendly applications. The innovative web frameworks and libraries make it easy to have same software code base for desktop and mobile devices. Single-page applications offer a more-native-app-like experience to the user. This also means a web application can easily be converted to a native mobile application if desired. This allows software products to be evolved continuously at a much faster pace with features added on daily basis. The software companies who can adopt these technologies will most likely see the benefit in the long run as they can offer new and modified products faster than their competitors. In this paper, we review some of the state-of-the-art web technologies, third-party libraries, and frameworks for quick interactive web development. Finally, we present a simple interactive browser-based, mobile friendly web application which was developed using one of the latest web development framework.

Web application server cluster has been widely used to improve the performance of web application servers. Because web load is highly variable, we need to dynamically manage cluster’s deployment so as to reduce power consumption and meanwhile satisfy load performance demand. To facilitate researchers to evaluate a management strategy or choose key parameters for it, we propose a CloudSim-based simulation platform in this paper. It can simulate different cluster deployment algorithm, request scheduling algorithm and load feature, where cluster’s deployment includes the on/off state, CPU frequency and request scheduling parameter(s) of each server. By the aid of HookTimer component, the platform supports periodical and conditional deployment trigger modes, and can calculate some common performance indicators. The usage of interface, dynamic proxy technique and XML configuration file make the platform have good extensibility and configurability. In addition, a request-number-triggered management strategy is proposed and simulated by the platform. The simulation results demonstrate the feasibility of the platform.

Modern Web 3D technologies allow us to display complex interactive 3D content, including models, textures, sounds and animations, using any HTML-enabled web browser. Thus, due to the device-independent nature of HTML5, the same content might have to be displayed on a wide range of different devices and environments. This means that the display of Web 3D content is faced with the same Quality of Experience (QoE) issues as other multimedia types, concerning bandwidth, computational capabilities of the end device, and content quality. In this paper, we present a framework for adaptive streaming of interactive Web 3D scenes to web clients using the MPEG-DASH standard. We offer an analysis of how the standard’s Media Presentation Description schema can be used to describe adaptive Web 3D scenes for streaming, and explore the types of metrics that can be used to maximize the user’s QoE. Then, we present a prototype client we have developed, and demonstrate how the 3D streaming process can take place over such a client. Finally, we discuss how the client framework can be used to design adaptive streaming policies that correspond to real-world scenarios.

We present a novel approach that allows web designers to easily direct user attention via visual flow on web designs. By collecting and analyzing users' eye gaze data on real-world webpages under the task-driven condition, we build two user attention models that characterize user attention patterns between a pair of page components. These models enable a novel web design interaction for designers to easily create a visual flow to guide users' eyes (i.e., direct user attention along a given path) through a web design with minimal effort. In particular, given an existing web design as well as a designer-specified path over a subset of page components, our approach automatically optimizes the web design so that the resulting design can direct users' attention to move along the input path. We have tested our approach on various web designs of different categories. Results show that our approach can effectively guide user attention through the web design according to the designer's high-level specification.

Nowadays web sites have become an important means for communication. Every application is converted to internet based application. A huge amount of the data is added daily and huge amount of information is accessed from the web. The millions to billions of web users are accessing the interested data from the web making the network traffic. To overcome these problems, recommender systems which are the part of machine learning are introduced. At present, recommender systems play an important role in the ecommerce field. The shopping sites where the users are recommended with the interested products and resources based on their navigation behavior, profile and their interest on the products. The recommender systems are basically divided into three types, they are content based, collaborative and hybrid recommender systems. As the web users are increasing the network performance is affected. Thus it is required to enhance the performance of the network by using the mining and machine learning classification techniques. In this paper, we propose an efficient web recommender system, which uses the concept of preprocessing, clustering technique and expectation maximization naive bayes as predictive model.

The paper proposes an original architecture to execute discrete-event simulations using mobile devices (in particular smartphones) and cloud. The originality of the proposed approach is highlighted by the way the connection between modeling and simulation environment, cloud and smartphones is performed via a solid web services oriented architecture. This approach has led to a software implementation based on the discrete-event system specification formalism which allows an explicit separation between the modeling aspect and the simulation features. Thanks to this explicit separation, the discrete-event models defined and validated by simulation are remotely accessible from smartphones via web services. With this new approach, a smartphone is part of the simulation model and it can be used for real data acquisition or to control the model during the simulation.

As the World Wide Web carries on to grow up rapidly in size and popularity, web traffic and network bottlenecks are more important issues in the networked world. The continued enhancement in demand for items on the World Wide Web causes severe overloading in many sites, network congestion, delay in perceived latency and network bottleneck. Many users have no patience in waiting more than a few seconds for downloading a web page, that's why Web traffic reduction system is very necessary in today World Wide Web for accessing the websites efficiently with the facility of existing networks. Web caching is an effective method to improve the performance of the World Wide Web but in today's World Wide Web caching method alone is not enough because of World Wide Web has grown quickly from a simple information-sharing mechanism to a rich collection of dynamic objects and multimedia data. The web prefetching is used to improve the performance of the proxy server. Prefetching predict web object that is expected to be requested in the near future and store them in advance, thus the response time of the user request is reduced. To improve the performance of the proxy server, this paper proposed a new framework which combines the caching system and prefetching technique and also optimize the prefetching with the help of probability. In this paper, we use the dataset for the experiment which is collected from ircache.net proxy server and give the result with the comparison of other technique of prefetching.

Nowadays, web services have to accommodate a significant and ever-increasing number of requests due to high interactivity of current applications. Although the built-in elasticity offered by a cloud can mitigate this challenge, it is highly desirable that applications can be built in a scalable fashion. State-of-the-art Web Application Frameworks (WAFs) focus on the creation of application logic and do not offer integrated cloud scaling concepts. As the creation of such scaling systems is very complex, we proposed in our recent work the concept of Web Scaling Frameworks (WSFs) in order to offload scaling to another layer of abstraction. In this work, a detailed design for WSFs including necessary modules, interfaces and components is presented. A mathematical model used for performance rating is evaluated and enhanced on a computing cluster of 42 machines. Traffic traces from over 25 million real-world applications are analysed and evaluated on the cluster to compare the WSF performance with a traditional scaling approach. The results show that the application of WSFs can substantially reduce the number of total machines needed for three representative real-world applications—a social network, a trip planner and the FIFA World Cup 98 website—by 32, 63 and 92 percent, respectively.

Because of the advancement of Web technologies and the inconsistency of Web standards to be consistent with every single technology evolution, Web developers are been faced with certain challenges. It become difficult for them to keep track of their applications that are been correctly rendered across wide range of browsers and platforms. To find out cross-browser inconsistency, developers keep checking that every document produced by the application is appropriately passed across all useful browser-platform combinations. But this requires more time and results are error-prone. The existing cross-browser compatibility testing tools speed up this process by automating the rendering of a Web document in multiple browsers and platforms, and using either image analysis or Document Object Model (DOM) analysis to feature out cross-browser inconsistency. This paper comprises the problem of cross-browser inconsistent testing of the modern web applications as a functional accuracy check of web application’s behaviour with various web browsers and present a solution for it. Also, reasons of cross-browser inconsistency issues and solutions to them are been presented in the paper.

Due to demand perspective, online 3D visualization and analysis of geospatial data using web 3D service (W3DS) has become an emerging research area in the geographic information system (GIS) domain. The applications of Web 3D GIS address the issues related to disaster management, city planning, transportation system, flood simulation etc. CityGML is a recently developed open geospatial consortium (OGC) standard. It can be used to outline, store and exchange virtual 3D city common information models. A plethora of open source and commercial softwares have been developed for visualization and processing of CityGML data, but its visualization and analysis in the web browser environment is still a challenging field. Although many application programming interfaces (APIs) have been customized for visualization of 3D graphics on the web, but these required specific web browsers with additional plug-ins or components. To overcome the above said limitations, Web 3D open source technologies such as WebGL, X3D, jQuery and X3DOM have been used in the developed application for flood simulation and querying on the modern web browsers. The developed application has been utilized freely available CityGML of the small region in Germany for the testing and evaluation of flood simulation and querying in a multiuser access environment. As a result, W3DS has been introduced in the application for accessing 3D dataset in an interoperable framework.

Most of the existing visualization and simulation applications run on the client machine and require an installation process. Browser based interactive visualizer for scientific and medical applications remain an unheard concept despite all advancements in computer and software technology and it remains a fairly difficult process to quickly prototype a visualization on a PC or a smart device. In this paper, we review and employed state-of-the-art web technologies, third-party libraries and frameworks to compare and develop some interactive browser-based, mobile friendly web applications. These latest web technologies have the potential to fulfill the promise of interactive browser based custom visualization applications. We presented and compared some of the latest web based tools available today. We also introduced couple of lightweight and interactive web based visualizer and simulator tools which are under development.

JavaScript web applications are improving performance mainly thanks to the inclusion of new standards by HTML5. Among others, web workers API allows multithreaded JavaScript web apps to exploit parallel processors. However, developers have difficulties to determine the minimum number of web workers that provide the highest performance. But even if developers found out this optimal number, it is a static value configured at the beginning of the execution. Because users tend to execute other applications in background, the estimated number of web workers could be non-optimal, because it may overload or underutilize the system. In this paper, we propose a solution for highly parallel web apps to dynamically adapt the number of running web workers to the actual available resources, avoiding the hassle to estimate a static optimal number of threads. The solution consists in the inclusion of a web worker pool and a simple management algorithm in the web app. Even though there are co-running applications, the results show our approach dynamically enables a number of web workers close to the optimal. Our proposal, which is independent of the web browser, overcomes the lack of knowledge of the underlying processor architecture as well as dynamic resources availability changes. The Semantic Web is an extension of the current Web where information is represented in a way that computer programs such as software agents can understand the meaning of the information without human's intervention. Like the Web, huge number of hyperlinked data exist on the Semantic Web which results in the Web of Linked Data. In addition, one can easily encounter hyperlinked multimedia data such as image files, video clips, etc. on the Semantic Web. In this paper, we propose a browsing system called LIDAB which shows user-friendly views of different types of linked multimedia data sources on the Semantic Web. The motivation behind our research is to provide lay users without technical backgrounds on the Semantic Web with intuitive views on the linked multimedia data. While there exist well-known linked data browsing systems such as Tabulator, Disco, etc., using these systems are not always easy for novice users since they do not show intuitive views on browser screens. On the other hand, our system generates a view that looks almost like a normal HTML view that one can see on a Web browser. Our system has two types of audience: non-expert users who browse the information on the Semantic Web and Web designers who can create HTML documents. It is easy to use the proposed system in various educational scenarios where students can surf the Semantic Web to study learning materials.

The global water gap, water demand minus water supply, is expected to increase through 2100, negatively affecting agriculture, industry and households. Adaptation measures are necessary, but projections on their effectiveness and costs are currently unavailable. Here, we present an adaptation evaluation framework aimed at closing the water gap, which is applied offline at the global scale, and made available for regional decision making as a web service. It includes climate change and socioeconomic scenarios over the 21st century as drivers for global projections of water supply and demand. The transient water gap was calculated for 1604 water provinces globally and we determined the water gap reduction that could be achieved by three increasingly involved sets of adaptation measures. The median annual adaptation costs amount to 1.4–1.6% of the GDP per affected water province. The interactive web-based simulation allows users to include information that is not available at the global scale.

Due to the rapid growth of the World Wide Web, resource discovery becomes an increasing problem. As an answer to the demand for information management, a third generation of World-Wide Web tools will evolve: information gathering and processing agents. This paper describes WAVE (Web Analysis and Visualization Environment), a 3D interface for World-Wide Web information visualization and browsing. It uses the mathematical theory of concept analysis to conceptually cluster objects, and to create a three-dimensional layout of information nodes. So-called "conceptual scales" for attributes, such as location, title, keywords, topic, size, or modification time, provide a formal mechanism that automatically classifies and categorizes documents, creating a conceptual information space. Web storage or browser storage, a new client-side data storage feature, was recommended as a part of the HTML5 specifications and now widely adopted by major web browser vendors. Web storage with native browser support has changed the paradigm of web application development unprecedentedly because persistent data storage with increased data size can be realized on the client. Web storage is poised to quickly become an area of particular interest for forensic investigators due to the potential to discover critical information from web browser artifacts at client side. However, the literature work on web browser forensics has traditionally focused on browsing history, browser cache, and cookie files (Oh et al., 2011). Therefore, we first discuss the prevalence of web storage implementation in widely used websites. Then, we compare and contrast the web storage technology currently implemented in the five major web browsers, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, and Apple's Safari. Moreover, in order to provide more insights into web storage and enable unified forensic analysis, a proof-of-concept tool, named as BrowStEx (Browser Storage Extractor), is described with implementation details. The commonalities, differences, and the proof-of-concept tool discussed in this paper can be useful in developing advanced forensic tools that can extract browser storage artifacts.

With the advent of web programming languages the so called web applications are emerging, applications that run directly from your browser, without installing additional plug-ins. A major advantage of web applications is the fact that they are multiplatform, offering the possibility of running on smartphones and tablets, technologies that are more and more present in day-to-day lives. And due to the constantly expanding of the power electronics theme, largely due to increased use of switching power supplies in electronic products today, a web application to connect web applications and power electronics was developed. An application that calculates parameters of Buck converters and plots information relevant to it to the user in a simple and easy way.

Web applications are useful for various online services. These web applications are becoming ubiquitous in our daily lives. They are used for multiple purposes such as e-commerce, financial services, emails, healthcare services and many other captious services. But the presence of vulnerabilities in the web application may become a serious cause for the security of the web application. A web application may contain different types of vulnerabilities. According to OWASP TOP 10 vulnerability report, Cross-site Scripting (XSS) is among top 5 vulnerabilities. So this research work aims to implement effective solution for the prevention of cross-site scripting vulnerabilities. In this paper, we implemented a novel client-side XSS sanitizer that prevents web applications from XSS attacks. Our sanitizer is able to detect cross-site scripting vulnerabilities at the client-side. It strengthens web browser, because modern web browser do not provide any specific notification, alert or indication of security holes or vulnerabilities and their presence in the web application.

A discrete-event system simulation and animation program was developed to enhance the efficiency of a truck-excavator operation and reduce the environmental impact of haulage in an open-cut coal mine with multiple-pit operations. In any mine, a key objective is to have sufficient equipment for production and not to have excess to where it becomes counterproductive. Due to the advent of responsible mining, environmental regulations, and eco-friendly practices, these factors must also be considered in the analysis. Simulation studies can be financially advantageous for both the optimization of existing mine operations and new development phases in a mine. This study is a new approach to use discrete-event system simulation for mine systems, in order to investigate and possibly reduce environmental impact considering mining haulage performance and production target. A hypothetical layout of a surface coal mine with two pit operations was used for the simulation and animation model. The simulation model includes the animation of the operation. Animation is helpful to enhance the benefit of a mine simulation model. GPSS/H® and Proof Professional® were the software used for the investigation. Purpose – The aim of this paper is to propose a Web environment for pre-processing and post-processing for 2D problems in generalized coordinate systems. Design/methodology/approach – The system consists of a Web service for client-server communication, a database for user information, simulation requests and results storage, a module of (for) calculation processing (front-end) and a graphical interface for visualization of discretized mesh (back-end). Findings – The Web system was able to model real problems and situations, where the user can describe the problem or upload a geometry file descriptor, generated from computer graphics software. The Web system, programmed for finite difference solutions, was able to generate a mesh from other complex methods, such as finite elements method, adapting it to the proposed Web system, respecting the finite difference mesh structure. Research limitations/implications – The proposed Web system is limited to solve partial differential equations by finite difference discretization. We need to study about refinement and parameters adaptations to solve partial differential equations simulated with other methods. Practical implications – The Web system includes implications for the development of a powerful real problems simulator, which is useful for computational physics researchers and engineers. The Web system uses several technologies, such as Primefaces, JavaScript, JQuery and HTML, to provide an interactive user interface. Originality/value – The main contribution of this work is the availability of a generic Web architecture for including other types of coordinate systems and to solve others partial differential equations. Moreover, this paper presents an extended version of the work presented in ICCSA 2014.

Research conducted on the potential and effectiveness of simulations and video games for learning purposes in educational settings has proliferated in the past few decades. Yet the research specifically examined the effectiveness of simulation games for second/foreign language learning remains scarce. This experimental study investigated the effect of interactivity in a web-based simulation game on Asian EFL learners’ vocabulary learning in an immediate post treatment test and retention in a two-week delayed posttest. The study also examined the effect of interactivity on induced cognitive load. The factor “interactivity” is manipulated at two levels, i.e. game (interactive) vs. game replay (non-interactive). Participants were comprised of one hundred undergraduate students (N = 100) enrolled in a rural university of technology in southern Taiwan. Students were first matched based on their game experiences, demographic information and English ability and then randomly assigned to either the gameplay or game replay condition. Results indicated that interactivity induced from multi-players is conducive to germane cognitive load and significantly enhanced vocabulary recall. Additionally, language proficiency was confirmed to be a factor that mediated the amount of mental effort EFL gamers invested in a web-based English simulation game.

Just as Internet connectivity has enabled intuitive information sharing and interaction through the Web, so the Internet of Things might be the basis for the Web of Things, enabling equally simple interaction among devices, systems, users, and applications.

Web applications have become one of the fundamental Internet services. How to effectively support the popular browser-based web applications is a key to success for Named Data Networking (NDN). However, since NDN has a totally different running mechanism from the traditional IP network, the existing web browsers mainly designed for the HTTP protocol and the TCP/IP-based Internet rather than named data networking, cannot communicate with NDN routers directly and do not inherently support the NDN-based web applications. Instead of providing a browser add-on or HTTP–NDN proxy/gateway, we designed and developed a complete NDNBrowser based on open source WebKit to natively support NDN-based web applications in the web browser kernel. Some inherent NDN features are seamlessly integrated into the browser to support the direct interactions between web browser and NDN network. Considering backwards compatibility and smooth network evolution, the NDNBrowser enables content fetching and rendering by both ‘ccnx:/’ and ‘http:/’ schemes URI in HTML, CSS and JavaScript simultaneously. Experimental results show that the NDNBrowser outperforms existing NDN.JS and HTTP–NDN proxy/gateway implementations by 19× and 5× respectively in terms of throughput. Finally, a real NDN-based web application is deployed on a NDN experimental network in our campus environment for network innovations to verify the practicability of NDNBrowser.

Smartphone based web browsing wastes a lot of power when downloading webpages due to the special characteristics of the wireless radio interface. In this paper, we identify these special characteristics, and address power consumption issues through two novel techniques. First, we reorganize the computation sequence of the web browser when loading a webpage, so that the web browser can first run the computations that will generate new data transmissions and retrieve these data from the web server. Then, the web browser can put the wireless radio interface into low power state, release the radio resource, and then run the remaining computations. Second, we introduce a practical data mining based method to predict the user reading time of webpages, based on which the smartphone can switch to low power state when the reading time is longer than a threshold. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our energy-aware approaches, we develop a testbed with Android phones on T-Mobile UMTS network. Experimental results show that our approach can reduce the power consumption of smartphone by more than 30 percent during web browsing. Moreover, our solution can further reduce the webpage loading time and increase the network capacity.

The World Wide Web has evolved gradually from a document delivery platform to an architecture for distributed programming. This largely unplanned evolution is apparent in the set of interconnected languages and protocols that any Web application must manage. This paper presents Ur/Web, a domain-specific, statically typed functional programming language with a much simpler model for programming modern Web applications. Ur/Web's model is unified, where programs in a single programming language are compiled to other "Web standards" languages as needed; modular, supporting novel kinds of encapsulation of Web-specific state; and exposes simple concurrency, where programmers can reason about distributed, multithreaded applications via a mix of transactions and cooperative preemption. One of the key areas of Web geotechnology development is the implementation of software tools and systems, which are capable not only to display geospatial data in the Web interface, but also to provide functionality for processing and analysis directly in the browser window. Significant feature of current Web-based geo-spatial standards is the focusing on server-side data processing. Our study investigates possibilities and general ways of decentralized data processing implementation on the client side in the case of using the Java Web Start technology. The test software tools are developed that implements capability of transmitting the executable program code to the client computer through the Web interface and spatial data processing on the client side.

Today's dynamic web-based applications have become a normal and critical asset to an organizations business. They come with an increase in the number of web vulnerabilities and attacks. These weaknesses allow hackers to focus their attention on attacking this important information source. The most common vulnerability is cross-site scripting (XSS) and one of the Open Web Application Security project (OWASP) top ten web-threats. XSS occurs when a Web-based application allows untrusted information be accepted and sent back to a browser. Also they can execute scripts within a browser that can deface web sites, redirect users to malicious content and hijack browsers. One reason for this problem was the lack of developers understanding the causes of XSS. In this paper, the authors address the causes of XSS and countermeasures to defense against these threats.

Web data mining aims at discovering useful knowledge from various Web resources. There is a growing trend among companies, organizations, and individuals alike of gathering information through Web data mining to utilize that information in their best interest. In science, cloud computing is a synonym for distributed computing over a network; cloud computing relies on the sharing of resources to achieve coherence and economies of scale, similar to a utility over a network, and means the ability to run a program or application on many connected computers at the same time. In this paper, we propose a new system framework based on the Hadoop platform to realize the collection of useful information of Web resources. The system framework is based on the Map/Reduce programming model of cloud computing. We propose a new data mining algorithm to be used in this system framework. Finally, we prove the feasibility of this approach by simulation experiment.

the last few years, the discovery of World Wide Web (WWW) has grown very much. Today, WWW applications are routinely utilized in security critical environments, like e- commerce, medical, financial, and military systems etc. WWW systems are an organization of infrastructure elements, like web databases and servers, and application-specific code, such as HTML scripts and CGI programs etc. While the core elements are usually developed by knowledgeable programmers with valid security skills this ensuing vulnerable web-based applications and accessible to the complete web, creating easily- abusing access points for the conciliation of entire networks. During this paper, we survey the current approaches to internet vulnerability analysis and that we propose a classification along two characterizing: detection and prevention model and study these methods. Furthermore we describe the foremost regular attacks in contrast to web-based applications and explore the effectiveness of sure analysis techniques in characteristic specific categories of flaws.

Service creation by ordinary users without technical know-how has become increasingly popular in the Web 2.0 era. There is a growing need for ordinary Web 2.0 users to embed telecom services into their existing web applications such as blog, wiki, or online shops’ homepages without conventional programming. However, the current open APIs, SDK, and graphical service creation environment technologies are mainly aimed at experienced developers with professional technical knowledge, rather than ordinary Web 2.0 users. To facilitate the latter’s use of telecom network services in their web applications, this article proposes a novel web-element-based exposure approach for such services. It encapsulates lowlevel APIs in a series of customised independent web elements, which can be directly embedded in the web page by the Customization-Copy-Paste feature. The flexible invocation of telecom services by ordinary Web 2.0 users will greatly promote web-based telecommunication applications.
