We present a novel approach to global-scale full-waveform inversion (FWI) that can reduce computational cost by over an order of magnitude, compared to previously published methods, without sacrificing physical and mathematical rigour. This is based on data-adaptation, and thereby application-oriented specialization, on two complementary levels. On the simulation level, we exploit the approximate azimuthal symmetry of seismic wavefields by implementing wavefield-adapted meshes and discrete adjoints, thereby lowering numerical simulation cost. On the measurement level, we use a quasi-stochastic approach where variable mini-batches of data are used during an iterative misfit minimization in order to promote a parsimonious exploitation of data. In addition to the methodological developments, we present an inversion of long-period (100–200 s) seismic waveforms from 1179 earthquakes for 3-D whole-mantle structure. The computational cost of the 72 iterations in the inversion approximately equals one third of a single iteration using an FWI approach with widely used cubed-sphere-based meshes and non-stochastic gradient optimization. The resulting LOng-Wavelength earth model (LOWE) constitutes the first global FWI constructed entirely from a spherically symmetric initial mantle structure. While mostly serving as a showcase for the method, LOWE contains a wealth of regional-scale structures that compare well to earlier tomographic images. Being conservatively smooth and based on minimal assumptions, it may therefore serve as starting model for future inversions at shorter period or smaller scales. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a new approach to full-waveform inversion (FWI) that enables the assimilation of data sets that expand over time without the need to reinvert all data. This evolutionary inversion rests on a reinterpretation of stochastic Limited-memory Broyden–Fletcher–Goldfarb–Shanno (L-BFGS), which randomly exploits redundancies to achieve convergence without ever considering the data set as a whole. Specifically for seismological applications, we consider a dynamic mini-batch stochastic L-BFGS, where the size of mini-batches adapts to the number of sources needed to approximate the complete gradient. As an illustration we present an evolutionary FWI for upper-mantle structure beneath Africa. Starting from a 1-D model and data recorded until 1995, we sequentially add contemporary data into an ongoing inversion, showing how (i) new events can be added without compromising convergence, (ii) a consistent measure of misfit can be maintained and (iii) the model evolves over times as a function of data coverage. Though applied retrospectively in this example, our method constitutes a possible approach to the continuous assimilation of seismic data volumes that often tend to grow exponentially. We present a novel full-waveform inversion (FWI) approach which can reduce the computational cost by up to an order of magnitude compared to conventional approaches, provided that variations in medium properties are sufficiently smooth. Our method is based on the usage of wavefield adapted meshes which accelerate the forward and adjoint wavefield simulations. By adapting the mesh to the expected complexity and smoothness of the wavefield, the number of elements needed to discretize the wave equation can be greatly reduced. This leads to spectral-element meshes which are optimally tailored to source locations and medium complexity. We demonstrate a workflow which opens up the possibility to use these meshes in FWI and show the computational advantages of the approach. We provide examples in 2-D and 3-D to illustrate the concept, describe how the new workflow deviates from the standard FWI workflow, and explain the additional steps in detail. In this paper, we present a series of mathematical abstractions for seismologically relevant wave equations discretized using finite-element methods, and demonstrate how these abstractions can be implemented efficiently in computer code. Our motivation is to mitigate the combinatorial complexity present when considering geophysical waveform modelling and inversion, where a variety of spatial discretizations, material models, and boundary conditions must be considered simultaneously. We accomplish this goal by first considering three distinct classes of abstract mathematical models: (1) those representing the physics of an underlying wave equation, (2) those describing the discretization of the chosen equation onto a finite-dimensional basis and (3) those describing any spatial transforms. A full representation of the discrete wave equation can then be constructed using a hierarchical nesting of models from each class. Additionally, each class is functionally orthogonal to the others, and with certain restrictions models within one class can be interchanged independently from changes in another. We then show how this recasting of the relevant equations can be implemented concisely in computer software using an abstract object-oriented design, and discuss how recent developments in the numerical and computational sciences can be naturally incorporated. This builds to a set of results where we demonstrate how the developments presented can lead to an implementation capable of multiphysics waveform simulations in completely unstructured domains, on both hypercubical and simplical spectral-element meshes, in both two and three dimensions, while remaining concise, efficient and maintainable. We present a computational framework for the assimilation of local to global seismic data into a consistent model describing Earth structure on all seismically accessible scales. This Collaborative Seismic Earth Model (CSEM) is designed to meet the following requirements: (i) Flexible geometric parametrization, capable of capturing topography and bathymetry, as well as all aspects of potentially resolvable structure, including small-scale heterogeneities and deformations of internal discontinuities. (ii) Independence of any particular wave equation solver, in order to enable the combination of inversion techniques suitable for different types of seismic data. (iii) Physical parametrization that allows for full anisotropy and for variations in attenuation and density. While not all of these parameters are always resolvable, the assimilation of data that constrain any parameter subset should be possible. (iv) Ability to accommodate successive refinements through the incorporation of updates on any scale as new data or inversion techniques become available. (v) Enable collaborative Earth model construction. The structure of the initial CSEM is represented on a variable-resolution tetrahedral mesh. It is assembled from a long-wavelength 3-D global model into which several regional-scale tomographies are embedded. We illustrate the CSEM workflow of successive updating with two examples from Japan and the Western Mediterranean, where we constrain smaller scale structure using full-wave form inversion. Furthermore, we demonstrate the ability of the CSEM to act as a vehicle for the combination of different tomographic techniques with a joint full-waveform and travel time ray tomography of Europe. This combination broadens the exploitable frequency range of the individual techniques, thereby improving resolution. We perform two iterations of a whole-Earth full-waveform inversion using a long-period reference data set from 225 globally recorded earthquakes. At this early stage of the CSEM development, the broad global updates mostly act to remove artefacts from the assembly of the initial CSEM. During the future evolution of the CSEM, the reference data set will be used to account for the influence of small-scale refinements on large-scale global structure. The CSEM as a computational framework is intended to help bridging the gap between local, regional and global tomography, and to contribute to the development of a global multiscale Earth model. We successfully apply the semi-global inverse method of simulated annealing to determine the best-fitting 1-D anisotropy model for use in acoustic frequency domain waveform tomography. Our forward problem is based on a numerical solution of the frequency domain acoustic wave equation, and we minimize wavefield phase residuals through random perturbations to a 1-D vertically varying anisotropy profile. Both real and synthetic examples are presented in order to demonstrate and validate the approach. For the real data example, we processed and inverted a cross-borehole data set acquired by Vale Technology Development (Canada) Ltd. in the Eastern Deeps deposit, located in Voisey's Bay, Labrador, Canada. The inversion workflow comprises the full suite of acquisition, data processing, starting model building through traveltime tomography, simulated annealing and finally waveform tomography. Waveform tomography is a high resolution method that requires an accurate starting model. A cycle-skipping issue observed in our initial starting model was hypothesized to be due to an erroneous anisotropy model from traveltime tomography. This motivated the use of simulated annealing as a semi-global method for anisotropy estimation. We initially tested the simulated annealing approach on a synthetic data set based on the Voisey's Bay environment; these tests were successful and led to the application of the simulated annealing approach to the real data set. Similar behaviour was observed in the anisotropy models obtained through traveltime tomography in both the real and synthetic data sets, where simulated annealing produced an anisotropy model which solved the cycle-skipping issue. In the real data example, simulated annealing led to a final model that compares well with the velocities independently estimated from borehole logs. By comparing the calculated ray paths and wave paths, we attributed the failure of anisotropic traveltime tomography to the breakdown of the ray-theoretical approximation in the vicinity of strong velocity discontinuities.
