Dental cervical restorations may be impacted by resultants of occlusal loads that may have already contributed to the development of the lesion and should rely on materials' favorable properties to bear the stresses. The marginal quality of cervical restorations made with materials of different moduli of elasticity in essence, isolated, or in combination, was evaluated relative to eccentric occlusal loading. Cervical wedge-shaped cavities, prepared in extracted premolars, were restored with a composite resin (CR), a restorative ionomer (GIC), or the composite in combination with a lining ionomer (Mixed restoration: M). Half of the teeth in each group were subjected to eccentric occlusal loading (eol; 150 N / 10 6 cycles / 2.5 Hz; CReol / GICeol / Meol, n = 10), and the others were stored in 37 °C distilled water (Control: c; CRc / GICc / Mc, n = 10). A fluorescein-modified adhesive favored delimitation of formed gaps, which were evaluated by confocal laser scanning microscopy regarding their presence, location related to the cavity walls, and width and depth (µm), at a 5% significance level. From a comprehensive perspective, neither the loading nor the materials were significantly associated with the qualitative response variables or exerted any influence over the quantitative variables. More specifically, the use of the different materials was significantly associated with the frequency of gaps exclusively when loading was applied (Chi-square test, p = 0.029, CR > M > GIC). Though the marginal quality of cervical restorations may not be influenced by eccentric occlusal loading or the use of different materials, even in association in general, the unfavorable aspects of the use of the composite may be relevant, particularly in face of the existence of eccentric occlusal loads., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Objectives: This study evaluated the surface microhardness (SM) and roughness (SR) alterations of dental resins submitted to pH catalysed degradation regimens., Methods: Thirty discs of each TPH Spectrum (Dentsply), Z100 (3M-ESPE), or an unfilled experimental bis-GMA/TEGDMA resin were fabricated, totaling 90 specimens. Each specimen was polymerized for 40 s, finished, polished, and individually stored in deionized water at 37 °C for 7 days. Specimens were randomly assigned to the following pH solutions: 1.0, 6.9 or 13, and for SM or SR evaluations (n = 5). Baseline Knoop-hardness of each specimen was obtained by the arithmetic mean of five random micro-indentations. For SR, mean baseline values were obtained by five random surface tracings (R(a)). Specimens were then soaked in one of the following storage media at 37 °C: (1) 0.1 M, pH 1.0 HCl, (2) 0.1 N, pH 13.0 NaOCl, and (3) deionized water (pH 6.9). Solutions were replaced daily. Repeated SM and SR measurements were performed at the 3-, 7- and 14-day storage time intervals. For each test and resin, data were analysed by two-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's test (α = 0.05)., Results: There was significant decrease in SM and increase in SR values of composites after storage in alkaline medium. TPH and Z100 presented similar behaviour for SM and SR after immersion in the different media, whereas unfilled resin values showed no significant change., Conclusion: Hydrolytic degradation of resin composites seems to begin with the silanized inorganic particles and therefore depend on their composition., Significance: To accelerate composite hydrolysis and produce quick in vitro microstructural damage, alkaline medium appears to be more suitable than acidic medium. Objectives: To evaluate the effect of additives on the water sorption characteristics of Bis-GMA based copolymers and composites containing TEGDMA, CH3Bis-GMA or CF3Bis-GMA., Material and Methods: Fifteen experimental copolymers and corresponding composites were prepared combining Bis-GMA and TEGDMA, CH3Bis-GMA or CF3Bis-GMA, with aldehyde or diketone (24 and 32 mol%) totaling 30 groups. For composites, barium aluminosilicate glass and pyrogenic silica was added to comonomer mixtures. Photopolymerization was effected by 0.2 wt% each of camphorquinone and N,N-dimethyl-p-toluidine. Specimen densities in dry and water saturated conditions were obtained by Archimedes' method. Water sorption and desorption were evaluated in a desorption-sorption-desorption cycle. Water uptake (%WU), water desorption (%WD), equilibrium solubility (ES; µg/mm³), swelling (f) and volume increase (%V) were calculated using appropriate equations., Results: All resins with additives had increased %WU and ES. TEGDMA-containing systems presented higher %WU, %WD, ES, f and %V values, followed by resins based on CH3Bis-GMA and CF3Bis-GMA., Conclusions: Aldehyde and diketone led to increases in the water sorption characteristics of experimental resins.

This study evaluated the influence of the method and period of storage on the adhesive bond strength of indirect composite resin to bovine dentin. Ninety bovine incisors were stored in three different solutions: 0.2% thymol, 10% formalin, and 0.2% sodium azide, during 3 periods of storage: 7 days, 30 days and 6 months, resulting in 9 groups (n = 10). The roots were cut off and the buccal surface was ground with #600-grit silicon carbide paper. The surface was conditioned with 37% phosphoric acid for 15 s and a composite resin restoration (TPH Spectrum) was fixed using a one-bottle adhesive system (Adper Single Bond) and a dual-cured resinous cement (Rely X ARC) under a load of 500 g for 5 minutes. The samples were serially cut perpendicular to the bonded interface to obtain slices of 1.2 mm in thickness. Each slab was trimmed with a cylindrical diamond bur resulting in an hourglass shape with a cross-sectional area of approximately 1 mm(2). The microtensile bond strength (microTBS) testing was performed in a testing machine (EMIC 2000 DL) at a 0.5 mm/minute crosshead-speed until failure. After fracture, the specimens were examined under SEM to analyze the mode of fracture. muTBS Means were expressed in MPa and the data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA (3X3) and the Tukey test (alpha = 0.05). The storage times of 7 and 30 days produced no significant difference irrespective of the solution type. The formalin and thymol solutions, however, did have a negative influence on bond strength when the teeth were stored for 6 months.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the polymerization shrinkage and shrinkage stress of composites polymerized with a LED and a quartz tungsten halogen (QTH) light sources. The LED was used in a conventional mode (CM) and the QTH was used in both conventional and pulse-delay modes (PD). The composite resins used were Z100, A110, SureFil and Bisfil 2B (chemical-cured). Composite deformation upon polymerization was measured by the strain gauge method. The shrinkage stress was measured by photoelastic analysis. The polymerization shrinkage data were analyzed statistically using two-way ANOVA and Tukey test (p < or = 0.05), and the stress data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (p < or = 0.05). Shrinkage and stress means of Bisfil 2B were statistically significant lower than those of Z100, A110 and SureFil. In general, the PD mode reduced the contraction and the stress values when compared to CM. LED generated the same stress as QTH in conventional mode. Regardless of the activation mode, SureFil produced lower contraction and stress values than the other light-cured resins. Conversely, Z100 and A110 produced the greatest contraction and stress values. As expected, the chemically cured resin generated lower shrinkage and stress than the light-cured resins. In conclusion, The PD mode effectively decreased contraction stress for Z100 and A110. Development of stress in light-cured resins depended on the shrinkage value.

Purpose: To determine the effect of using a variety of commercial light-curing units on polymerization of a dentin-bonding agent (Adper Single Bond) and of a resin composite (Filtek Z250)., Methods: Infrared (IR) spectra were obtained kinetically at one scan/second at 2 cm(-1) resolution for a period of 5 minutes and were analyzed for: maximum conversion rate (%/s), time into exposure when maximum rate occurred (seconds), conversion at maximum rate (%), and total conversion (%) at 300 seconds by comparison of aliphatic-to-aromatic absorption IR peak ratios, before and after polymerization. Light units used were: QTH 540 mW/cm2 (XL3000); LED 750 mW/cm2 (Elipar FreeLight 2); PAC 2,130 mW/cm2 (ARC II). Exposure followed manufacturers' recommendations: dentin bonding agent for 10 seconds, RC for 20 seconds (QTH), and 10 seconds (LED and PAC). Polymerization kinetics was evaluated at the bottom surface (2.5 mm thick) for the resin composite and as a thin film for the dentin bonding agent on the diamond surface of an attenuated total reflectance accessory in the IR spectrometer. Values (n = 5) were compared using ANOVA and Tukey's pairwise post-hoc test: pre-set alpha 0.05., Results: PAC produced the highest total conversion and conversion rate for the resin composite (P < 0.05). Total conversion was lower for dentin bonding adhesive using PAC than with LED or QTH (P < 0.05). LED provided the highest proportion of conversion at the maximum rate with respect to conversion at 300 seconds for both materials. QTH demonstrated the lowest maximum rate value that occurred at a longer time into exposure (P < 0.05). Polymerization kinetic parameters varied greatly between the restorative materials as well as among light-curing unit types when compared to values observed when using a QTH light as control.

Purpose: To evaluate the influence of different light-curing units on microtensile bond strength of resin composite restorations., Materials and Methods: Standardized Class I preparations (6.0 x 4.5 mm, 2.5 mm deep) were made in extracted human third molars after abrading the cusps. Resin was inserted in bulk using a 3M ESPE restorative system [Adper Single Bond (DBA)/ Filtek Z250 (RC)]. Both materials were polymerized using different light-curing units: QTH at 540 mW/cm(2) (XL 3000, 3M ESPE); LED at 750 mW/cm(2) (Elipar FreeLight2, 3M ESPE); PAC at 2130 mW/cm(2) (Arc Light II, Air Techniques). Nine different light combinations were developed to polymerize both DBA and RC: QTH/QTH; QTH/LED; QTH/PAC; LED/LED; LED/QTH; LED/PAC; PAC/PAC; PAC/QTH; PAC/LED. Restored teeth were stored in distilled water for 24 h at 37 degrees C and then sectioned, yielding stick-shaped specimens with a bonded area of approximately 0.9 mm(2). Specimens were assessed in a testing machine at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min. The results were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test at a pre-set alpha = 0.05., Results: The combinations PAC/QTH and QTH/QTH presented the highest bond strength values, and LED/QTH the lowest (p < 0.05). Significantly lower values were observed in combinations when the LED light was used to polymerize DBA compared to QTH and PAC lights, irrespective of the light source used to polymerize RC (p < 0.05). Same light combinations presented similar bond strength values., Conclusions: Different light sources influence restoration bond strength. Bond strength is more dependent on the light source used for DBA than for curing RC.

Purpose: The present study is a compilation of methodologies developed in order to evaluate the effects of addition of a fluorescent agent, rhodamine B, to resin-based materials. The intent of the work was to develop a systematic methodology that accounts for variables not shown to be of concern in past testing, but may significantly affect interpretation of the resulting images and material properties., Materials and Methods: Different methodologies were specifically developed to evaluate factors affecting the use of the fluorescent agent rhodamine B in the identification of resin-based materials. The influence of dye concentration was evaluated with respect to adhesive polymerization reaction kinetics and bond strength of the resin into which the dye is added. The pH of the dye-solvent solution was also considered. Additionally, the mass and percentage of rhodamine B leached into different media over time was determined., Results: It was demonstrated that a specific dye must be used with caution, and the concentration of a fluorescent agent is important with respect to both the conversion and bond strength of the resin to which the dye is added. An alcohol-based dye solution also produced an extremely high amount of dye leaching from polymerized specimens. The adhesive pH was not altered., Conclusion: The standardized methodology developed here to analyze restoration interfaces using a fluorescent dye can lessen the impact of variables when interpreting results.

Purpose: This study describes a two-photon laser fluorescence microscopy technique developed to evaluate the interfacial micromorphology of the hybrid layer in bonded restorations., Materials and Methods: Micropermeability of the hybrid layer was characterized by means of simultaneously contrasting a dye-containing adhesive with a differently colored dye placed into the pulp chamber and allowed to diffuse toward the different-colored hybrid layer. A fluorescent red dye (rhodamine B) was incorporated into a commercial dentin bonding agent. Class I preparations (margins in enamel) were made on extracted human third molars. The teeth were restored using conventional methods: bonding agent, composite, finishing, and polishing. An aqueous solution of a yellow/green dye (fluorescein) was then placed into the pulp chamber for 3 h, allowing time to diffuse toward the different-colored bonded interface. The teeth were then embedded, sectioned, and microscopically analyzed using two-photon laser microscopy at 40X magnification., Results: Subsurface fluorescent imaging using this technique enabled interfacial micromorphology to be characterized at submicrometer resolution and provided high-contrast images. The quality of surrounding structures and potential presence of gaps were also precisely assessed., Conclusion: Two-photon laser microscopy provided high quality, high-resolution images of the bonded interface and surrounding areas, allowing accurate qualitative and quantitative analysis of the structure and integrity of the hybrid layer.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of pH of different adhesive systems on the polymerization of a chemically cured composite resin (Adaptic--AD), by means of tensile bond strength testing. The adhesive systems tested were: ARM, Prime & Bond 2.1 (PB), Scotchbond Multi Purpose (SMP) and Single Bond (SB). Bond strength at the resin/adhesive system/resin interface was assessed. Five groups (n=5) were formed, according to following configuration: G1: AD/ARM/AD; G2: AD/PB/AD; G3: AD/SMP/AD; G4: AD/SB/AD; G5: AD/AD (no adhesive). A two-mold stainless steel matrix with a cone-shaped opening (1-mm-thick; 4 mm in diameter) was used to obtain resin discs. AD resin was inserted into the first mold, left-self curing and an adhesive layer was applied onto resin surface and light-cured. The second mold was assembled over the first and was filled with the resin. After 10 min, this setting was loaded in tension in a universal testing machine running at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. Data were submitted to one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (p<0.05). Bond strength means (kgf) were: G1: 15.23 +/- 4.1; G2: 0.00 +/- 0.0; G3: 16.96 +/- 2.4; G4: 10.08 +/- 2.7; G5: 15.44 +/- 0.9. There were statistically significant differences (p<0.05) between G2-G1; G2-G3; G2-G4; G4-G1; G4-G3. The systems with the lowest pHs (PB and SB) yielded the lowest bond strength. The findings of this in vitro study demostrates that the pH of adhesive systems influences the polymerization and bond strength of chemically cured resin materials. The low pH simplified adhesive systems showed distinct degrees of incompatibility with the chemically cured resin, when compared to the conventional adhesive systems.

The insertion of bonded resin composites into cavity preparations leads to a competition between polymerization contraction forces and the strength of bonds to tooth structure. The degree of stress development can be controlled, to some extent, by the cavity design (C-factor), the use of bases, the size, shape, and position of increments of composite resins placed in the cavity, and whether the resin is light- or chemically cured. Stress relief can be accomplished by maintaining the C-factor as low as possible, using chemical-curing resins, low modulus liners, and, over time, by water sorption. A thorough understanding of these principles permits clinicians to exercise more control over these variables, thereby improving the quality of their bonded restorations.

The authors describe a clinical case of closing upper central incisives diastema, reconstructiva of a conoid upper lateral and the rechaping of an upper canine to a lateral incisive. The material used was composite resin.
