Abstract: Short-carbon-fiber-reinforced SiC composites were prepared by precursor pyrolysis–hot pressing with MgO–Al2O3–Y2O3 as sintering additives. The effects of the amount of sintering additives on microstructure and mechanical properties of the composites were investigated. The results showed that the composites could be densified at a relatively low temperature of 1800°C via the liquid-phase sintering mechanism and the composite density and mechanical properties improved with the amount of additives. The amorphous interphase in the composites with more additive content, not only avoided the direct contact of the fibers with matrix, but also improved the fiber–matrix bonding. It proved that the fiber–matrix interphase characteristics played a key role in controlling mechanical properties of the composites. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The ZrB2- BN composite without ZrC impurity was prepared successfully using reactive hot pressing via carbothermal reduction of ZrO2 with B4 C, C, and BN powders. The influences of additives and sintering temperature on the phase and microstructure of composites were investigated. The formation reaction of ZrC was inhibited by decreasing the evaporation of intermediate product B2 O3 due to forming a SiO2- B2 O3 eutectic system with the addition of SiO2 or SiO2 - CaF2. In comparison, SiO2- CaF2 exhibited better inhibition capacity of ZrC. ZrB2- BN composite without impure ZrC phase was achieved. In addition, the content of ZrO2 decreased with increasing sintering temperature, and finally disappeared when sintered at 1800°C. Monolithic α-SiC particles and in situ β-Si3N4-reinforced barium aluminosilicate (BAS) glass ceramic matrix composites with good mechanical properties were obtained by spark plasma sintering. However, attempts at the synthesis of ternary phase composites in order to maximize the reinforcing effects by co-adding α-SiC and β-Si3N4 were only partly successful. β-Si3N4 grain growth was remarkably hindered by the coexistent α-SiC, thus the resultant composite suffered a loss of reinforcement efficiency. Abstract: TaC/SiC composites with 20vol.% SiC addition were densified by spark plasma sintering at 1600–1900°C for 5min under 40MPa. Effects of sintering temperatures on the densification, microstructures and mechanical properties of composites were investigated. The results showed the materials achieved >98% of theoretical density at a temperature as low as 1600°C. While the TaC grains grew slightly with the sintering temperature increasing, the SiC particles in materials decreased in size. Equiaxed to elongated grain morphology transformation was observed in the SiC phase in the 1900°C material to obtain a higher flexural strength and fracture toughness of 715MPa and 6.7MPam1/2, respectively. Lattice enlargement of the TaC phase in the 1900°C material suggested possible Si diffusion into TaC grains. Ta was also detected in SiC grains by energy dispersive spectroscopy. Glassy pockets present at multi-grain junctions explained the enhanced densification. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: TaC/SiC composites with 5–40vol.% 6H–SiC were fabricated by spark plasma sintering at 1800°C for 5min. Effects of SiC concentrations on the densification, microstructure, and mechanical properties of the materials were investigated. The results showed the densification process of the TaC/SiC composites was composed of six sequent stages. SiC addition was effective in eliminating the closed porosities in the final stage to yield fully dense TaC/SiC composites at 20vol.% SiC concentrations and above. TaC grain sizes decreased with SiC concentration increase. The 40vol.% SiC composition had the highest flexure strength and fracture toughness up to 703MPa and 6.8MPam1/2 due to the reinforcement of the SiC agent. The TaC/SiC composites with 20 and 40vol.% SiC showed good flexural strength at 1400°C. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: α-SiC/α-SiAlON composites with 80wt% α-SiC (6H phase) were fabricated by spark plasma sintering at 1800–2000°C in a 0.6atm nitrogen atmosphere. The effects of the temperatures on the phase development, microstructures and mechanical properties were investigated. The results showed the Si3N4, AlN, Al2O3, and Y2O3 particles were isolated by the 6H-SiC to prevent α-SiAlON formation at 1800°C. The Si3N4 decomposed at 1900°C and above, thus added Si in the phase compositions. The α-SiC grains grew anisotropic in the sintering liquids at 1800°C and 1900°C, forming the self-reinforcing microstructures, and accordingly increased the flexural strength and fracture toughness. In cooling down immediately after the temperature reached 2000°C, a transitory hold at 1700°C transformed the 6H-SiC into the 3C polytype in 30s. Abstract: cBN/β-SiAlON composites with different cBN contents were fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS) process. The densification, thermal stability of cBN, microstructure and mechanical properties of the resultant composites were investigated. The addition of cBN particles to β-SiAlON could increase the Vickers hardness, flexural strength and fracture toughness of β-SiAlON. It is attributed to the high density, no obvious cBN to hBN transformation and good interface bonding between cBN grains and β-SiAlON matrix. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
