Purpose The purpose of this study is to obtain strong materials with multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) doped and investigate laser cut of MWCNTs also find the effect of the laser cutting parameters on composite materials. Design/methodology/approach The laminated composite plates were manufactured by using a vacuum infusion process. The mechanical properties of the composite materials produced were determined according to American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) D3039M, ASTM D3171, ASTM D 792 and ASTM D2583. A 130 Watts carbondioxide (CO2) laser cutting machine was used for drilling the two different composite plates with a thickness of 1.6–1.5 mm. Three variables were considered as process parameters including laser power (in three levels of 84.50, 104.00 and 127.40 W), cutting speed (in three levels of 4, 6, 8 mm/s) and 14 mm fixed focal position. Findings The fibers could not be cut due to insufficient melting in the experiments performed using 84.50 and 104.00 W laser power but the cutting was successfully completed when the laser power was 127.40 W. However, as the cutting speed increased, the contact time of the laser beam with the material decreased, so the kerf decreased, but the increased laser power created a thermal effect, causing an increase in hardness around the cutting surface. This increase was lower in MWCNTs doped composites compared to pure composites. It has been found that the addition of nanoparticles to layered glass fiber composite materials played an effective role in the strength of the material and affected the CO2 laser cutting quality. Originality/value This study is a unique study in which the CO2 laser cutting method of MWCNT-doped composite materials was investigated and the machinability without cutting errors, such as delamination, splitting, distortion and burring using the most suitable laser cutting parameters was revealed.

This study investigates the effect of composite material stiffness on the accuracy of drilled holes and delamination in the drilling process. Two types of composite materials were tested: glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP) and carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). The drilling process was performed using dedicated drill bits. Samples were clamped in a vice of the Avia-VMC 800 HS vertical machining center. Drilling parameters were maintained constant but unsupported element length was changed. The unsupported element length was defined as an unsupported distance between the drilled hole axis and the sample attachment location. The maximum feed force Ff was determined in the experiments. The accuracy of drilled holes was estimated by optical microscopy. Diameters of the drilled holes were measured. Results made it possible to determine the recommended unsupported element length at which the hole dimensions were within the dimensional tolerance. The study showed a clear decrease in the drilled hole quality and a significant increase in the feed force, especially in the area of tool exit from the workpiece. In addition, the number of delaminated fibers increased with unsupported element length was determined in the study.

In this study, the holes of glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) doped GFRP composite materials were drilled using abrasive water jet (AWJ), CO2 laser cutting, orbital drilling, and punching methods; the effects of these methods on hole quality were determined. The hole entry and exit dimensions were obtained equal and in the desired size by orbital drilling; thus, kerf formation was prevented due to the lateral and face milling of the end mill. The surface hardness change was not observed in the hole circles obtained with the orbital drilling and punching methods. However, epoxy hardening was observed in the hole circles obtained by laser cutting due to the heat effect of laser beam. In AWJ method, matrix-fiber integrity was disrupted, and delamination was observed due to the effect of water pressure and kinetic energy; consequently an increase in material thickness was observed and surface hardness decreased. It was determined that MWCNTs additive increased the surface hardness of composites and maintained its hardness and durability in post-cutting measurements. Splintering and burring were not seen in any method, but fiber carbonization was observed in the inner parts of the hole due to thermal effects in laser cutting.

In this study, the effect of adding nanosize additive to glass fiber reinforced composite plates on mechanical properties and surface milling was investigated. In the light of the investigations, with the addition of MWCNTs additive in the composite production, the strength of the material has been changed and the more durable composite materials have been obtained. Slots were opened with different cutting speed and feed rate parameters to the composite layers. Surface roughness of the composite layers and slot size were examined and also abrasions of cutting tools used in cutting process were determined. It was observed that the addition of nanoparticles to the laminated glass fiber composite materials played an effective role in the strength of the material and caused cutting tool wear.

The article presents the results of research on the influence of the length of elements made of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) and glass fiber reinforced plastics (GFRP) on surface roughness, surface topography, passive forces and cutting torques after circumferential milling with diamond-coated inserts (PCD). The paper also presents the results of research the stiffness of the elements depending on their length. Samples of composite materials were clamped in a vise at the machining center. The length of the element was defined as the unsupported distance between the milled surface and the place of attachment of the composite element. With constant milling parameters, the maximum values and amplitudes of the values of passive forces and cutting torques at variable element lengths were determined. The obtained surface was measured in order to determine the surface roughness parameters and 3D topography. Research have shown that the carbon fiber reinforced plastics is on average one and a half times stiffer than that the glass fiber reinforced plastics. Based on the results obtained, it was found that as the length of the element increases, the passive forces and cutting torques increase and the roughness parameters increase. It has also been shown that for the glass fiber reinforced plastics, above a certain length, the surface roughness clearly deteriorates.

The aim of this work is to investigate the effect of the hexagonal nano boron nitride (h-BN) doped epoxy on the mechanical performances and machinability behaviors of basalt fiber (BF) composites. The h-BN has used as a dopant with a weight rate of 1 wt. %. The polymer composites were prepared by the vacuum bagging method and specimens were processed with abrasive water jet machining (AWJM) to analyze the machinability of the material. A circular hole with an 8 mm size was machined by abrasive water jet (AWJ) on the composite plate with a thickness of 2.3 ± 0.1 mm using the garnet size of 80 µm as an abrasive. Taper angle and circularity of machined hole, the entry-exit hole diameter, delamination, splintering, burring, thickness, and hardness were measured. Results indicate that cutting speed has a high influence on the taper angle and circularity respectively.

Microwave curing technology, which has seen increased commercialization recently due to its ability to cut the curing time and ensure high quality, requires an understanding of the curing characteristics of composite materials of varying thickness. Therefore, this study aimed to perform cure monitoring to evaluate the effects of variations in thickness on the quality of microwave curing. For this study, a fiber Bragg grating sensor was used to measure temperature changes in specimens during the curing cycle for cure monitoring which is generally used for optimization of the curing cycle, then, the time taken for temperature increase and overshoot of the specimen, and the times at which the specimen thickness varied, were quantitatively evaluated. Testing confirmed that microwave curing reduced the curing time in the sections in which the temperature rose, also, the specimen thickness caused overshoot of up to approximately 40 &deg, C at the side, which can affect the curing quality of the composite materials. Furthermore, voids were observed on the side of all specimens. The results indicated that, in order to improve the quality of microwave curing of composite materials, the curing cycle should be optimized by considering the characteristics of the microwave curing equipment.

A liquid nitrogen cooling system was developed to ensure the successful ultrasonic testing of composite materials to characterize the very High Cycle Fatigue (VHCF) of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP). The fatigue failure of CFRP occurs even in the very high cycle range and there is no traditional fatigue limit. The S&ndash, N curve of the CFRP presents a step whose characteristics appear in the transition between high cycle and very high cycle fatigue. The damage evolution of CFRP in the same field of view is investigated. The morphology of damaged CFRP composites under ultrasonic loading is described by three characteristics: matrix damage at the intersection of fiber bundles, near fiber bundle parallel section matrix cavity and matrix penetration. With the increasing of cycles, the damage process is also presented in turn according to these three characteristics. The post-fatigue bending modulus changed significantly from the pre-fatigue values, indicating that the VHCF had a considerable impact on the mechanical properties of the composite. An evolution threshold was introduced from the S&ndash, N curve to determine the fatigue evolution law from the high cycle regime to the very high cycle regime.

The drilling process of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) is the main secondary processing in the entire production cycle. However, there is no standard theory that could be used to estimate the hole quality and to quantify the assessment. Therefore, in this article, several influential factors of drilling quality, such as drilling parameters and materials, were utilized to establish the classification tree model. A comprehensive evaluation model [three-dimensional (3D) evaluation factor] was presented to measure and quantify the quality of the hole. Then a series of experiments were designed based on existing conditions. Further, a mathematical software (Origin) was used to fit and analyze the relationships of the drilling parameters and the 3D evaluation factor. Then a user-friendly drilling database system of CFRP was established based on the historical data of drilling experiments and the fitting function. In addition, in order to contrast the optimization results of the fitting function, the drilling experiments have been conducted, and the results have verified that the drilling database system could optimally predict the drilling schemes with a minor error.

Materials play a fundamental role in defining the vibrational and acoustic characteristics of structures and their importance is even increasing because of the continuing demand for lightweight products. Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastics (CRFP) components are becoming more and more popular because of their excellent mechanical properties but are unfortunately almost unable to dissipate energy. This is one of the reasons why their usage is limited to structural components and does not directly affect acoustic and vibrational response, which are among the factors responsible for harshness and comfort. In vehicles, for example, large panels of CFRP are as noisy as metallic panels so that this kind of lightweight structures is only used when a limited mass is of paramount importance, e.g. in racing cars. The chance of incorporating a damping material in the stacking sequence of CF layers that define a composite seems to be a viable solution to ameliorate the vibrational behaviour of composite materials. This configuration permits to cure the damping layers together with the resins, in order to obtain both free and constrained layer solutions. In this paper, the Oberst beam method has been chosen to determine the elastic modulus and loss factor of such materials, as a function of both frequency and temperature. Three nominally identical samples for each configuration have been tested in a temperature controlled environment, according to the Oberst beam test method. The effects of aging have been simulated by an accelerated standard procedure, with cyclically varying temperature and humidity for a total of 792 h (3 cycles x 264 h). The analysis of experimental data has been performed in the frequency domain by a least square fitting procedure, aimed at outperforming the simple half-power point method. An open source version of the fitting technique has also been implemented and can be obtained from the authors under the CC-by license.

The influence of porosity on the ultrasonic wave propagation in unidirectional carbon-fiber-reinforced composite laminates is investigated based on the two-dimensional finite element analysis and measurements. Random distributions of pores with different contents and size are considered in the analysis, together with the effects of viscoelastic plies and interlaminar resin-rich regions. The transient reflection waveforms are calculated from the frequency-domain finite-element solutions by the inverse Fourier transform. As the measures for porosity characterization, the ultrasonic wave velocity, attenuation coefficient, and interlaminar interface echo characteristics are examined for 24-ply unidirectional composite laminates. As a result, the wave velocity decreases with the porosity content in a manner insensitive to the pore size. On the other hand, the attenuation coefficient increases both with the porosity content and with the pore size. The time–frequency analysis of the reflection waveforms shows that the temporal decay rate of interlaminar interface echoes at the stop-band frequency is a good indicator of the porosity content. The measured porosity-content dependence of the wave velocity is better reproduced by the numerical simulations when the interlayer interfacial stiffnesses are adjusted according to the porosity content, indicating that not only the porosity features but also the interlaminar interfacial properties vary with curing conditions.

A method for connecting a driving shaft to a three-dimensional composite disk via a polymer ring was examined to achieve stable rotation at high rotation speeds. Polyoxymethylene (POM) was adopted as the polymer ring material. Compression test was conducted to determine the limit of linear viscoelasticity, and creep resistance of POM was examined to evaluate its long-term durability. Structural design using finite element analysis including long-term creep resistance has shown that this method was predicted to be effective up to a tip speed of 1210 m/s. A three-dimensional composite disk was reinforced to three directions in accordance with the cylindrical coordinates. A trial composite disk with outer and inner diameters of 304 and 41 mm, respectively, was manufactured and tested up to a tip speed of 908 m/s. Vibration amplitudes were measured using gap and laser sensors. The vibration phenomenon and methods of suppressing vibration were discussed for higher rotation speeds.

Dry drilling of thick carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates requires careful selection of process parameters in order to obtain acceptable borehole surface quality. Complex contact conditions between the drill margin and the borehole surface determine the integrity of the borehole surface depending on the process parameters and temperature-dependent viscoelastic material properties. Temperature rise during dry drilling reduces the elastic modulus of the CFRP and causes thermal expansion of the drill, resulting in considerable contact length at the drill margin and borehole surface interface. Manufacturers need a better understanding of the interaction among contact pressure, sliding velocity, temperature at the interface, and temperature-dependent material properties to develop predictive models for drilling CFRPs. To examine this complex interaction, this study develops a novel, hybrid model that combines a time-based analytical modeling of drilling process with a finite element-based modeling of temperature rise. Drilling experiments were performed in which thrust force, torque, and temperature were measured as a function of feed, and these measurements were used to identify unknown hybrid model parameters. The results revealed that a significant change in friction conditions occurs when increased temperatures at the margin and borehole surface interface approach and exceed the glass transition temperature of the CFRP laminate at a large feed rate. These findings show the benefit of increasing feed during dry drilling, which is nonetheless limited by the temperature-dependent material properties of the work material. Publisher's Version

In this study, β-cyclodextrin was covalently bonded on carbon fibers and its influence through host-guest complex formation was analyzed. Since cyclodextrins act as host molecules for aromatic compounds, complex formations can be performed in carbon fiber reinforced epoxy resins, between the carbon fiber surface and the aromatic compounds of the surrounding plastic. This interface design leads to improved adhesion between fiber and plastic. An increase of the interfacial shear strength from 12 MPa to 38 MPa was detected. It was possible to increase the interfacial shear strength even further, to 41 MPa, through a prior complex formation with one of the plastics components. The use of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) has contributed in producing light-weighted and strong aircraft structures. However, the low impact resistance of CFRP makes it easier for internal damages to occur. By using thin-ply prepeg with thickness of less than 0.05 mm, laminates with smaller differences in fiber orientation angle and with the same thickness as the conventional laminates can be formed. This study investigates and compares the mechanical properties and damage behaviours between quasi-isotropic laminates with fiber orientation angle mismatch of 45 degrees (45QI) and laminates with small fiber orientation angle mismatch of 15 degrees (15QI). Both laminates are loaded in tension in 0, 7.5, 15 and 22.5 degrees. Low velocity impact tests are also conducted. From tensile testing, 15QI laminates shows more isotropic properties in strength than 45QI. Damages were observed by using microscopic and X-ray images. Crack propagation in width direction can be prevented in 15QI laminates. From low velocity impact testing, we understand that impact responses are not depending so much on the fiber orientation angle mismatch. In terms of internal damage, 15QI laminates has smaller delaminated area near the impact point compared to 45QI laminates.

Two-dimensional finite element simulations and experiments are presented to examine the ultrasonic wave propagation behavior in the corner section of CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastics) laminate structures. The numerical model consists of a right-angle corner section of CFRP laminate immersed in water and subjected to the ultrasonic wave incidence from its inner or outer side. The anisotropic stiffness constants of the unidirectional CFRP are identified experimentally and used to model the curved laminate structure. A commercial finite element analysis code is used to compute the reflection waveforms in the pulse-echo mode, and the effect of the laminate stacking sequence and the wave incidence direction is examined. It is shown that the reflection waveforms for the wave incidence from the outer side of the corner qualitatively resemble those for the plane laminate except that the echo signals of the former are substantially weaker. The numerical simulations are shown to well reproduce the qualitative features of experimental reflection measurements performed for the corner sections of 16-ply CFRP laminate. Experimental results indicate that the porosity content of the corner section can be estimated by the amplitude ratio of the surface and the back-wall echoes when a curvature-dependent calibration relation is properly used.

The production rates of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) parts are rising constantly which in turn drives research to bring a higher level of automation to the manufacturing processes of CFRP. Resin transfer molding (RTM), which is seen as a production method for high volumes, has been accelerated to a high degree. However, complex net-shape preforms are necessary for this process, which are widely manually manufactured. To face these challenges a new concept for the manufacturing of carbon fiber preforms with a form-flexible gripping, draping and joining end-effector is presented and discussed. Furthermore, this paper investigates the application of this concept, describes the initial build-up of a demonstrator, focusing on material selection and heating technology, and discusses test results with the prototype. This prototype already validates the feasibility of the proposed concept on the basis of a generic preform geometry. After a summary, this paper discusses future in-depth research concerning the concept and its application in more complex geometries.

The accuracy of reliability analysis of structures made up of CFRP composites rely on the quantification of the uncertainties associated with composite material properties. This study focuses on the experimental characterisation of random field models for the material uncertainties. As a first step, a number of experimental tests on identical samples have been conducted as per ASTM standards. Assuming second order random fields to be appropriate for modelling the uncertain variations along the spatial extent in the macro-scale, statistical tests have been carried out to examine the suitability of some commonly used models for the probability density function for the various mechanical properties of the material. The spatial correlations observed from experimental tests have been compared with some of the commonly used correlation functions and suitable empirical models have been proposed. Finally, the importance of appropriate modelling of the parameters has been highlighted through a numerical example. � 2014 Elsevier Ltd.

[EN] Standard Compression-After-Impact test devices show a weakening effect on thin-walled specimens due to a free panel edge that is required for compression. As a result, thin-walled undamaged samples do not break in the free measuring area but near the free edge and along the supports. They also show a strength reduction due to the free edge which can become potentially relevant for very weakly damaged panels. In order to reduce the free edge influence on the measured strength, a modified Compression-After-Impact test device has been developed. In an experimental investigation with carbon fiber reinforced plastics, the modified device is compared with a standard device. It is shown that thin-walled undamaged specimens investigated with the modified device now mainly break within the free measuring area and no longer at the free edge and along the bearings as it is the case for standard test devices. The modified device does not cause a free edge weakening effect in comparison to standard devices. The modified device is therefore more suitable for determining the compression strengths of undamaged thin-walled composite plates, This research was partially supported by the Spanish government under grant number DPI2013-44903-R-AR through funding the specimens as well as the CAI-standard device. In this paper, the influence of prepreg material quality to the mechanical properties of CFRP parts is presented. During the out life of prepreg slit tape, the processability changes by aging especially when storing the material at room temperature. Therefore, investigations are done with an in-house developed AFP machine and are monitored with a thermal monitoring system to determine the influence of material aging to mechanical properties and changes in the manufacturing process. The manufactured CFRP plates are finally tested by 3-point bending test. © 2017 The Authors.

Carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) have good physical properties, such as high specific strength and high specific modulus. However, cutting delamination, tearing and burr, etc. often occur in the machining process of CFRP, which results in the uncontrollability of machining surface quality and serious tool wear. In this paper, milling of CFRP with a staggered cutter was carried out, the cutting-edge radius was investigated in order to characterize the tool wear; the effect of the cutting-edge wear radius on the milling force and surface quality was found, and the formation mechanisms of the 3D surface topography and surface defects were analyzed under the wear state. Experimental results showed that the wear of the staggered PCD cutter was mainly concentrated in the cutting-edge area. With the increase in milling length, the radius of cutting edge gradually became largeer under the action of abrasive wear mechanism, and the flank wear was not obvious. With the intension of tool wear, milling force gradually increased and the machining surface quality of the CFRP deteriorated distinctly, i.e., defects such as bare fiber fracture, groove and hole appeared, and burrs were gradually generated on the workpiece surface. Finally, through a comparative analysis of cutting performance, it was found that the staggered PCD cutter possessed better performance for wear resistance and burr suppression than the straight-teeth cutter. This finding can provide theoretical and technical support for improving the machining quality of carbon fiber composite materials.

This research evaluates electromagnetic properties of multifunctional composites based on glass fiber woven fabric pre-impregnated with epoxy resin laminated together carbon fiber non-woven veil metalized with Ni. In this way, searching for possible application as radar absorbing structures or electromagnetic interference shielding structures. The scattering parameters, in the frequency range of 8.2 to 12.4 GHz, show that the epoxy resin/glass fiber prepreg allows the transmission of the electromagnetic waves through its microstructure, independently of the glass fiber reinforcement orientation (98% transmission, S-24 = -0.09 dB). However, the carbon fiber/Ni veil shows highly reflector behavior (91% reflection, S-22 = -0.43 dB). Energy dispersive spectroscopy of the veil, before and after nitric acid attacks, confirmed the Ni coating removal from the carbon fiber surface. Still, the scattering parameters show reflector behavior (77% reflection, S-22 = -1.13 dB), attributed to the electrical conductivity of carbon fibers. Multifunctional composites based on glass fiber/epoxy/carbon fiber/Ni veil laminates were processed by hot compression molding. The scattering parameters show that the laminates do not behave as good radar absorbing structures. Nevertheless, the laminates present promising results for application as light weight and low thickness structural composites with electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (91.4% reflection for 0.36 mm thickness and 100% for similar to 1.1 mm) for buildings, aircraft, and space components. Machined surface quality determines the reliability, wear resistance and service life of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) workpieces. In this work, the formation mechanism of the surface topography and the machining defects of CFRPs are proposed, and the influence of milling parameters and fiber cutting angles on the surface quality of CFRPs is obtained, which can provide a reference for extended tool life and good surface quality. Trimming and slot milling tests of unidirectional CFRP laminates are performed. The surface roughness of the machined surface is measured, and the influence of milling parameters on the surface roughness is analyzed. A regression model for the surface roughness of CFRP milling is established. A significance test of the regression model is conducted. The machined surface topography of milling CFRP unidirectional laminates with different fiber orientations is analyzed, and the effect of fiber cutting angle on the surface topography of the machined surface is presented by using a digital super depth-of-field microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM). To study the influence of fiber cutting angle on machining defects, the machined topography under different fiber orientations is analyzed. The slot milling defects and their formation mechanism under different fiber cutting angles are investigated.

In high-speed precision machining, thermal deformation caused by temperature rise affects the accuracy stability of the machine tool to a significant extent. In order to reduce the thermal deformation of ball screws and improve the accuracy, a new adaptive method based on carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) was proposed in this study and the thermal deformation of ball screws was determined. By using the sequential coupling method, the thermal&ndash, structural coupling analysis of a ball screw was conducted based on the finite element method (FEM). The analysis results were verified through a comparison with the experimental results. Based on the verification, an FE model of the improved ball screw was established to study its thermal characteristics. The key design parameters of the improved ball screw were optimized based on the Kriging model and genetic algorithm (GA). The thermal reduction effect of the improved ball screw was validated through the experimental results. The results indicate that the adaptive method proposed in this research is effective in reducing the thermal deformation of ball screws.

The present work intends to provide a numerical tool for the efficient design of the multidirectional carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) material using finite element simulation software ABAQUS ® . A 3D model has been established for simulation of the tensile test composite specimen which enables to understand the mechanical strength and strain at failure of the composite materials. 15 ply CFRP specimens with various stacking sequences were analyzed for their strength and displacement. Exhaustive parametric studies reveal the dependency of reinforcing material and ply orientation on the strength and stiffness of composite materials. Carbon fibers with cross ply lamination were found to be stiffer than angle ply glass fiber lamination. A fairly good comparison was obtained between the predicted results with available experimental and theoretical data in open literature

A hybrid structural health monitoring (SHM) system, consisting of a piezoelectric transducer and fiber optic sensors (FOS) for generating and monitoring Lamb waves, was investigated to determine their potential for damage detection and localization in composite aerospace structures. As part of this study, the proposed hybrid SHM system, together with an in-house developed algorithm, was evaluated to detect and localize two types of damage: a through thickness damage (hole of 2 mm in diameter) and a surface damage (2 mm diameter bore hole with a depth of 0.65 mm) located on the backside of the plate. The experiments were performed using an aircraft representative composite plate skin, manufactured from carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP).

Aluminium alloys provide many benefits and challenges for use in marine environment. Attention on lightweight hulls leads to power saving, better handling and easy transportation. The stiffness and mass of the structure or member is responsible for its natural vibration. The hull panels and stiffeners vibrate at different frequencies when their stiffness is reduced by formation of a crack or any structural problems. If there is a monitoring system on board and by using a sensor detecting the modified vibrations, the maintenance crew senses the spot where urgent repair is needed. Application of composite laminates is convenient in view of portability and simplicity in procedure such as hand lay-up. In this study, the edge-cracked aluminium plates were repaired with one-sided composite patches and their temperature were varied to both low and high temperature levels. Dynamic fracture toughness was determined using Charpy impact test. Three different types of materials were used for composite patching: GFRP (glass-fibre-reinforced plastic), CFRP (carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic) and Kevlar. For each temperature level, two lay-ups were used, viz. three layered and five layered. Aluminium specimens with edge cracks of two different lengths, keeping the width of the crack constant, were prepared. Impact tests were performed for the prepared specimens at different temperatures. The fracture toughness of aluminium strips reinforced with patches was determined and compared with the energy absorbed during the impact of the corresponding specimen without the patch. It was observed that the specimen with patches gave a higher fracture toughness value when compared with that without the patch; corresponding observation on aluminium has been made along with patch at these temperatures. The patch using Kevlar was found to be the best among the three composites. Followed by these experiments, simulations using FRANC 2D software were carried out for finding stress intensity factor at different crack lengths with and without patches. The research has a spin-off application in the selection of materials used for patching and hence in the maintenance of LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) and LNG (liquefied natural gas) storage tanks under cryogenic conditions. � 2013 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.

The steel caging technique is used to strengthen RC columns all over the world, as it has been shown to be effective, economical and easy to apply. Most studies carried out to date on this strengthening technique have focussed on isolated sections of columns subjected to axial loads. This paper deals with an experimental study on the behaviour of RC columns strengthened by steel caging under combined bending and axial loads. Full-size specimens were laboratory tested and the beam-column joint was also simulated. Two different types of element were used to solve the strengthening in the zone nearest to the joint. These were: (1) capitals welded to the steel cage in contact with the beam and (2) steel tubes joining the cage on both sides of the joint. The results obtained show that the technique described considerably increases the resistance and ductility of columns strengthened in this way. The results are compared with those that could be obtained with the proposal of Eurocode No. 4 and also with the results of two other similar studies. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. A theoretical analysis has been carried out to study the efficient microwave processing of discrete food sample ceramic composite attached with ceramic (Al2O3 and SiC) plates. Continuous food sample with a specific thickness corresponding to smaller power absorption is replaced by two discrete samples and processed with ceramic composite. The effective power and temperature distribution are found to be function of discrete food sample ratios, type of microwave incidence and ceramic layer thickness. The effect of ceramic material on various discrete sample ratios have been studied via effective average power vs. thickness of ceramic (Al2O3 or SiC) intermediate for one side and both sides microwave incidence. It is found that power absorption is enhanced significantly for beef sample due to specific thickness of ceramic composite corresponding to one side microwave incidence. The power enhancement is lesser and the temperature difference or thermal runaway is larger for bread samples as compared to beef samples. The enhancement of heat absorption is larger for one side incidence as compared to both sides incidence with identical total intensity of microwave incidence. The role of discrete samples with ceramic composites is significant for highly lossy substances (beef) whereas the composites do not play significant role on optimal processing of low lossy substances (bread). � 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Dry sliding wear behavior of 8090Al alloy and its composites reinforced with 8, 12 and 18 vol% SiC particles was studied in as-extruded and peak-aged conditions using a pin-on-disc machine. Tests were done at room temperature in air under loads of 10, 20 and 50 N at a constant sliding speed of 1 m s-1. The unreinforced alloy and composites show mild wear upto 20 N. Transition from mild to severe wear takes place beyond 20 N. Composites exhibit better wear resistance compared to the unreinforced alloy in as-extruded condition. Effect of heat treatment (artificial ageing) on wear behavior has also been studied. The unreinforced alloy exhibits better wear resistance at all the three loads used here in peak-aged condition compared to the as-extruded condition. Composites on the other hand, show better wear resistance upto 20 N, however, they show lower wear resistance in peak-aged condition compared to as-extruded condition beyond 20 N. Injection molded polymer composite gears are being used in many power and motion transmission applications. In order to widen the utilization of reinforced polymers for precision motion transmission and noise less applications, the quality or accuracy of molded gears should be increased. Since the injection molded gear quality is significantly influenced by the material shrinkage behaviour, there is a need to understand the influence of fiber orientation on part shrinkage behaviour and hence the gear quality. Unreinforced and 20% short glass fiber reinforced Nylon 6/6 spur gears were injection molded in the laboratory and computer aided simulations of gear manufacturing was also carried out. Results of the mold flow simulation of gear manufacturing were correlated with the actual fiber orientation and measured metrological parameters of the molded gears. Actual orientation of the fibers near the tooth profile, weld line region and injection points of molded gears were observed using optical microscope. Fiber alignment along the tooth profile restricts shrinkage and induces anisotropic shrinkage, which significantly decreases the deviation of involute profile parameter from the design value. Fibers embedded in the molded skin surface increases the gear tooth profile form and lead form deviations. Non-alignment of fibers across the gear tooth section increases the tooth thickness, tooth-to-tooth spacing and radial runout deviations from design values. � 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Masonry is one of the conventional materials that is being used throughout the world due to its accessibility, functionality and cost but they fail in earthquakes mainly due to their low tensile and shear resistance. The objective of this investigation is to study the effectiveness of GFRP composite retrofitting on the behaviour of masonry wallettes and shear triplets that are cast with low stiffness table moulded bricks and high stiffness cement mortar through experimental and finite element study. Experiments were conducted on masonry wallettes under compression in different orientations and triplets under shear. Finite element models for the analysis of wallettes and shear triplets is developed using the FE software ABAQUS and validated with the experimental data. The concepts of macromodeling with smeared crack concrete model for masonry wallettes and micromodeling with the elastic properties of brick and mortar for shear triplets are used for the analysis. The changes in deformational capacity and ultimate load resistance are calculated for varying thickness and fiber orientations of GFRP composites. Based on this study, it is concluded that the strength and axial stiffness of the wallettes under compression and strength of shear triplets is increased due to external bonding of GFRP composites. The comparison of finite element and experimental results proved that macromodeling can be used to study behaviour of masonry wallettes retrofitted with GFRP composites and micromodeling is feasible for the analysis of small scale specimens such as triplets. � 2007 Elsevier Ltd. High strength fibers are extensively employed in many different composite applications. This article is concerned with the rate dependency of mechanical behavior of these fibers, namely S2 Glass®, Kevlar 29®, and Spectra 900® fibers at low loading rates. Also studied is bonding behavior of these fibers with the most used thermoset composite matrix materials, which are epoxy and polyester resins. With this regard, several tensile and single fiber pull-out tests were carried out by employing a 5 kN Instron testing machine. The experiments were conducted at loading rates ranging from 1 to 250 mm/min. Based on the results obtained in this research work, the tensile strength is increasing from 1 to 100 mm/min loading rate and fiber matrix bonding strengths are decreasing by enhancing loading rate. This implies that certain mechanical properties of some polymer matrix composites could be rate dependent, even at low loading rates.

Glass fiber reinforced vinyl ester polymer composites filled with clay particles were synthesized by a hand lay-up technique with the addition of methy ethyl ketone peroxide (MEKP), cobalt napthalate and benzoyl peroxide. Mechanical and thermal properties of vinyl ester-glass fiber composite and clay particles dispersed vinyl-glass fiber hybrids were investigated in the present work. The hybridization effect of nanoclay dispersion in vinyl ester-fiber composite was discussed. Enhanced mechanical, thermal and vibration properties were observed in nanoclay dispersed composites over vinyl ester-glass fiber composite. � SAGE Publications 2008.

International audience; Impact and post impact behavior of fabric reinforced geopolymer composites is investigated in this study. Carbon, E-glass and basalt fabrics are incorporated in the geopolymer matrix. The geopolymer composites are tested for impact resistance to an out-of-plane low velocity impact test, followed by post impact performance testing using residual strength measurement on the sample. Impact properties such as impact energy, energy absorption capacity, and damaged area of the composites were examined for fabric reinforced geopolymer composite samples. The drop weight impact tests were performed on composite samples of 15 × 15 cm. The quality of the samples was examined using C-scan in ultrasonic vibration mode and μCT before and after impact test. The post impact behavior of the composite samples was characterized using four point bending tests. Fiber orientation and alignment was observed using SEM. The results obtained showed that E-glass fabric reinforced composites show slightly better performance than carbon reinforced composites. Especially the damaged area is smaller for E glass composites. Basalt fabric reinforced composites have low bending strength and very low impact resistance. The energy absorption in E-glass is due to post-debond fiber sliding phenomena and in carbon fiber to fiber pull out from the composite. The smaller damaged area is attributed to the higher elastic energy absorption of E-glass fibers. The residual strength of carbon and E-glass composites decreased in relation to the size of the visually damaged area, meaning that no invisible damage took place. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd

Cutting and ablation using short-pulsed laser radiation are promising technologies to produce or repair CFRP components with outstanding mechanical properties e.g. for automotive and aircraft industry. Using sophisticated laser processing strategies and avoiding excessive heating of the workpiece, a high processing quality can be achieved. However, the interaction of laser radiation and composite material causes a notable release of hazardous substances from the process zone, amongst others carbon fiber segments or fibrous particles. In this work, amounts and geometries of the released fiber segments are analyzed and discussed in terms of their hazardous potential. Moreover, it is investigated to what extent gaseous organic process emissions are adsorbed at the fiber segments, similar to an adsorption of volatile organic compounds at activated carbon, which is typically used as filter material.

The Cu-W bulk nanocomposites of different compositions were successfully synthesized by high-energy ball milling of elemental powders. The nanocrystalline nature of the Cu-W composite powder is confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis, transmission electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. The Cu-W nanocomposite powder could be sintered at 300-400 �C below the sintering temperature of the un-milled Cu-W powders. The Cu-W nanocomposites showed superior densification and hardness than that of un-milled Cu-W composites. The nanocomposites also have three times higher hardness to resistivity ratio in comparison to Oxygen free high conductivity copper. Fast curing of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRPs) is limited by the degradation of the resin under high temperatures and by the development of internal strains. The authors counter these problems by adding nanoparticles to the matrix of CFRPs. In the presented work various volume fractions of nanosized aluminum oxide particles are integrated into the epoxy resin RTM6. To demonstrate the increased heat flow within the CFRP component, thermal conductivity tests are presented. Results show increasing values as the filler content is raised.With increasing filler content the reaction speed is also accelerated. This effect is analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry. It is shown that the particle surface has a catalytic effect on the curing of the epoxy resin. The results of the author also show that the added nanoparticles not only change the material composition, but also modify the network of the epoxy resin. In a series of experiments it is demonstrated how nanoparticles decrease the chemical shrinkage. The results show a reduction of the shrinkage higher than the volume fraction of the nanoparticles, which can be explained by the formation of interphases. Thermal mechanical analysis also confirms a decreased thermal shrinkage due to the integration of nanoparticles. Finally, the inspection of L-shaped CFRPs samples with different filler contents show the ability of nanofillers to decrease the spring-in.In summary, the integration of aluminum oxide decreases the thermal as well as the chemical shrinkage, increases the thermal conductivity and accelerates the chemical reaction.Overall, these changes in curing behavior lead to an increased dimensional stability of the CFRPs. Thus, nanoparticles may be one way of overcoming the disadvantages of fast curing cycles.

Application of short fiber reinforced thermoplastic materials are limited to functionally less important components due to heterogeneous characteristics of material and incomplete understanding of failure mechanisms involved. Reinforcement not only affects mechanical and electrical properties but also the failure mechanisms. Gears used in power/motion transmission may fail in many ways. This paper discusses the various types of failures exhibited by unreinforced and fiber reinforced Nylon 66 gears. Injection molded unreinforced, glass reinforced and carbon reinforced Nylon 66 spur gears were tested in a power absorption type gear test rig. Failed gears were observed under optical and scanning electron microscope to understand the damage mechanism. Different types of failures such as gear tooth wear, cracking at the tooth surface, tooth root cracking and severe tooth shape deformation were observed. Material compositions and applied torque decides the type of failure mechanism. Low interfacial strength between fibers and matrix in the reinforced gears causes fiber pullout. Reinforced gears exhibited longer life compared with the unreinforced gears due to superior mechanical strength and thermal resistance.

Carbon fiber-reinforced polymer structures are being increasingly used in aerospace applications. In this work, analytical, numerical, and experimental investigations are carried out to understand the structural response of debonded carbon fiber-reinforced polymer splice joint subjected to compression load. It is found that debonds are of major importance for the behavior of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer splice-joint structures. A series of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer splice-joint specimens are subjected to compressive loading by introducing an artificial debond at one of the interfaces in the splice joint and compared with specimens without debond. Although the compressive behavior is similar to that of nominal splice joint, the stiffness is considerably decreased in the presence of debond, and also the load-carrying capacity is reduced by 17% approximately. The experimental results are compared with the analytical predictions and numerical simulations using (a) the Rayleigh-Ritz method and (b) the finite element method, respectively, and are in good correlation. � The Author(s) 2014 Reprints and permissions: sagepub.co.uk/journalsPermissions.nav.

This paper focuses on the effect of the drill geometry on the drilling of woven Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer composite (CFRPs). Although different geometrical effects can be considered in drilling CFRPs, the present work focuses on the influence of point angle and wear because they are the important factors influencing hole quality and machining forces. Surface quality was evaluated in terms of delamination and superficial defects. Three different point angles were tested representative of the geometries commonly used in the industry. Two wear modes were considered, being representative of the wear patterns commonly observed when drilling CFRPs: flank wear and honed cutting edge. It was found that the crossed influence of the point angle and wear were significant to the thrust force. Delamination at the hole entry and exit showed opposite trends with the change of geometry. Also, cutting parameters were checked showing the feed's dominant influence on surface damage. Machinability characteristics of CFRPs are quite different than those of metals; therefore, special tool designs have been developed for CFRP machining. The double helix end mill design compresses the upper and lower sides of the laminate using opposite helix angles that eliminate delamination. A mechanistic force model for double helix tools is developed based on milling force data obtained on flat end mills. The proposed model can be used to improve double helix tool designs and to optimize milling process parameters. 2013 CIRP.

Little is known about the high speed routing of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRP). Most of the work in the literature has focused on the drilling of CFRP. In this paper, an extensive experimental study has been conducted to better understand the dynamic, tribological, and thermal characteristics of high speed milling of CFRPs, in the range of 10,000 to 40,000 rpm (200 to 800 m/min, for 6.35 mm end-mill). The material used was a quasi-isotropic laminate comprising 35 plies of woven graphite epoxy. The tool wear was investigated on the flank and the rake faces. The machined slots were characterized in terms of straightness errors, dimensional errors, surface roughness, and delamination. The tool over-hang controls the tool dynamics, in this high speed range, and significantly affect various quality attributes of the produced holes; roughness, dimensional errors, and straightness. Similar trends were observed for the forces and the temperatures, whereby there is a given speed at which they reach a minimum and then they start to increase for higher speeds. The machining force and temperature trends with varying speeds and feeds are controlled by the chip load, the specific cutting pressures, and the effect of the frictional forces. The increased tool wear was found to directly affect the cutting forces and consequently lead to high delamination and surface roughness. The milled surface quality was mainly controlled by the feed rate. Limited surface delamination was observed due to the low axial forces associated with the routing process. Carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRPs) have many desirable properties, including high strength-toweight ratio, high stiffness-to-weight ratio, high corrosion resistance, and low thermal expansion. These properties make CFRP suitable for use in structural components for aerospace applications. Drilling is the most common machining process applied to CFRP laminates, and it is difficult due to the extremely abrasive nature of the carbon fibers and low thermal conductivity of CFRP. It is a challenge for manufacturers to drill CFRP materials without causing any delamination on the work part while also considering the economics of the process. The subject of this study is the drilling of fabric woven type CFRP laminates which are known to be more resistant to delamination than unidirectional type CFRP laminates. The objective of this study is to investigate the influence of double point angle drill geometry on drilling performance through an experimental approach. An uncoated carbide and two diamond coated carbide drills with different drill tip angles are employed in drilling experiments of aerospace quality thick fabric woven CFRP laminates. Force and torque measurements are used to investigate appropriate drilling conditions based on drill geometry and ideal drilling parameters are determined. Tool life tests of the drills were conducted and the condition of the diamond coating is examined as a function of drilling operational parameters. High feed rate drilling experiments are observed to be favorable in terms of drill wear. Feed is observed to be more important than speed, and the upper limit of feed is dictated by the drill design and the rigidity of the machine drill. Hole diameter variation due to drill wear is monitored to determine drill life. At high feeds, hole diameter tolerance is observed to be more critical than hole exit delamination during drilling of fabric woven CFRP laminates. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Ceramic heat exchangers are increasingly used in many nuclear power plants. Silicon carbide has been treated as a promising material for heat exchanger application since it has good thermal conductivity and corrosion resistance. In this work, four different types of Si/SiC ceramic composites were prepared by liquid silicon infiltration technique. Thermal conductivities of these ceramic composites at different temperatures are measured by the laser flash thermal conductivity method. Results show that the presence of free carbon and voids are notably affecting the thermal conductivity of these materials. � 2010 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

Al-Li-SiCp composites were fabricated by a simple and cost effective stir casting technique. A compound billet technique has been developed to overcome the problems encountered during hot extrusion of these composites. After successful fabrication hardness measurement and room temperature compressive test were carried out on 8090 Al and its composites reinforced with 8, 12 and 18 vol.% SiC particles in as extruded and peak aged conditions. The addition of SiC increases the hardness. 0.2% proof stress and compressive strength of Al-Li-8%SiC and Al-Li-12%SiC composites are higher than the unreinforced alloy. In case of the Al-Li-18%SiC composite, the 0.2% proof stress and compressive strength were higher than the unreinforced alloy but lower than those of Al-Li-8%SiC and Al-Li-12%SiC composites. Composites were prepared by mixing the components and pouring them into suitable moulds. In some compositions, the matrix was reduced by tetrahydrofuran (THF) incorporation. Samples containing various amounts of ceramic filler were examined by TG/DTA and scanning electron microscopy analysis. Dielectric measurements were performed from 20 Hz to 1 MHz and 30 to 120 °C. It was demonstrated that the epoxy - CCTO composites possessed higher permittivity than classic epoxy - BaTiO3 composites. With the increasing trend in the use of light-weight functional material in emerging industrial applications, understanding the fabrication of aluminum-boron carbide (ABC) composite is becoming needful. In this context ABC composites up to 25 wt.% boron carbide (B4C) particulate reinforcement in alumnium 1100 matrix were prepared at 873 K and the resulting microstructure and physico-mechanical properties were studied. Dark-field images showed the continued existence of porosities. The density and electrical conductivity decreased from 2.52% to 1.8% and from 48% to 11% of the International Annealed Copper Standard, respectively. There was an 11-fold increase in hardness with 25 wt.% B4C addition. Although the flexure strength of the composite decreased because of transition in formation of phases at grain boundaries from ternary Al-B-C to binary Al-B, growth of Al-B and retention of boron carbides, the flexure modulus showed up to 8 times improvement with increased fraction of reinforcement. Fractographs revealed extensive damage to grain boundaries because of generated shear and particle pull-out. The tendency for brittle fracture increased with higher reinforcement fractions. The study forms the basis to commercialise ABC composites for required applications, and it is concluded that even though uncoated boroncarbide reinforcements embrittle the aluminum matrix in as-reinforced condition, improvement in other as discussed properties is significant. The study also indicates that the ductility of the metal matrix composite (MMC) may be improved by increasing the interfacial bonding and decreasing the overall porosity contents of the composite. � 2008 Elsevier B.V. The results of a study of the magnetic, NGR and other parameters of EuO:Fe composites, which really meet the requirements imposed on the use of them as spin injectors in the developed semiconductor spin-electronic structures capable of operating under normal conditions at room temperatures, are reported.
