Correct functional border impression and jaw registration is a challenge when edentulous arches are directly digitized with an intraoral scanner. This article describes a digital workflow to replicate complete edentulous arches with full functional contour, and position them in the centric relation using an intraoral scanner, existing denture, and three‐dimensional image reversal technique. Based on the reconstructed images, the base and dental parts of the new denture can be designed efficiently and predictably. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Soft liner is used to functional impression technique when dental stone is immediately poured after taking impression because of viscoelasticity. In this case, a 78-year-old male visited for new dentures. Due to severe resorption of mandibular edentulous ridge, functional impression taking by closed mouth technique was planned. First of all, making maxillary and mandibular provisional dentures was done, and lined by soft liner to rehabilitate pressured maxillary and mandibular edentulous ridge. After this, Functional impression was taken by closed mouth technique using provisional dentures which are transformed to healed maxillary and mandibular edentulous ridge, and final denture were fabricated using maxillary provisional denture as a reference of artificial teeth arrangement. Consequently, restoring a complete edentulous patient with taking functional impression using provisional dentures resulted in recovering satisfying retention and function. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
At the department of prosthodontics, the elderly patients with severely atrophied alveolar ridge who have been wearing complete dentures for a long period frequently visit the clinic. In general, the open-mouth impression technique for manufacturing a mandibular complete denture to secure primary support on buccal shelf area has been prevalent. In addition, for securing retention and stability of mandibular denture, we should consider diagnosis, oral function, denture border, occlusal plane, teeth arrangement, and patient training, etc.. But in edentulous patients with severe alveolar bone atrophy, it may hardly secure retention and stability of mandibular complete denture. To promote these, some of clinicians are making an attempt manufacturing the mandibular complete dentures using closed-mouth impression technique based on several reports that compare various impression techniques including open-mouth and closed-mouth impression technique. This case report suggests closed-mouth impression technique may promote retention and stability of mandibular complete denture and compares between the two impression techniques clinically. Potpuna bezubost predstavlja veliki zdravstveni problem. Temelj ovoga rada jest istaknuti važnost funkcijskog otiska. Opisane su do sada korištene metode, odnosno tehnike izvođenja, najčešće korišteni materijali te cjelokupan proces izrade funkcijskoga otiska. Važnost ispravno uzetoga funkcijskoga otiska je, uz pravilnu potporu laboratorija, osigurati valjanu retenciju i stabilizaciju proteze kako bi se pacijentu povratile sve navedene funkcije. The complete edentulism represents a big health issue. It distorts patient's functions of mastication, speech, physiognomy, phonetics, but also his psyhological, social function and to the patient most important aesthetics. Still the most frequently used method in therapy of edentolous patients is constructing the complete denture. Clinically functional impression is important wheel in the process of making the complete denture placed between the anatomical impression and determination of jaw relation. The base of this thesis is to point out the importance of constructing functional impression. Presented are used methods or performing techniques, the most frequently used materials and the whole process of making functional impression. The proper functional impression is of big importance with corresponding support of laboratory, to provide correct retention and stabilization od denture to provide patient all mentioned functions

Sonuç: Hekimlerin büyük çoğunluğu tam protez yaparken geleneksel ölçü yöntem ve tekniklerini kullanırken, alternatif materyal ve yöntem uygulayan hekimler de bulunmaktadır., Background: The aim of this study is to analyze the anatomical and functional impression techniques used by dentists in making complete dentures. Methods: A survey consisting of 35 questions was applied to 169 dentists working in various institutions. The questionnaire consisted of 3 parts; the first part consists of personal information, the second part is the anatomical impression procedures of the complete dentures and the third part consists of the questions about the functional impression processes of the complete dentures and the stages during the preparation of the impression. Descriptive, frequency analysis and crosstabs were used in the statistical analysis of the data. Results: As a result of descriptive and frequency analyzes of the answers of each question, the distribution of the data was formed according to the question groups. It was found that dentists used 98.9% irreversible hydrocolloid for the first impression, 62% zinc oxide eugenol for the second impression. It was found that dentists adopted mucostatic impression (38.4 %), mucocompressive impression (30.8 %), and mucoselective (30.8 %) impression technique. The majority of dentists (74.2 %) maked border molding and used generally impression compound (69.2 %). 53.3% of the dentists involved in our study tell their patients not to use their existing prostheses for at least 24 hours before the final impressions are taken. Conclusion: While the majority of dentist use traditional impression methods and techniques while performing a complete denture, there are also dentist who apply alternative materials and methods.

PURPOSE: To compare the difference in oblique external ridge, oblique internal ridge and alveolar process crest of lower complete denture base made through functional impression and anatomic impression techniques. METHODS: Fifteen patients were chosen to treat with two kinds of complete dentures through functional impression and anatomic impression technique respectively. 3D laser scanner was used to scan the three-dimensional model of the denture base and the differences of the surface structural between two techniques in alveolar process crest, external and internal oblique ridges were analyzed, using paired t test with SPSS 12,0 software package. RESULTS: Between the two techniques, there were significant differences in the areas of internal and external oblique ridge (P<0.01); there was no significant difference in the main support areas (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The results explain why there is less tenderness when functional impression technique is applied. The differences measured also indicate that sufficient buffering should be made in external and internal oblique ridge areas in clinic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
