152. RRECURSOS DE TECNOLOGIA DA INFORMAÇÃO SUSTENTADORES DE VANTAGEM COMPETITIVA: UM ESTUDO NO SETOR METAL-MECÂNICO AGROINDUSTRIAL.

This paper analyzed, under the Resource-Based View (RBV) perspective, the internal Information Technology (IT) resources as providers for competitive advantage. The main analysis of this historical longitudinal study investigated 17 strategic attributes through a qualitative exploratory approach. Each strategic attribute was identified, characterized and defined according to the corresponding RBV authors, before being used in the analysis. This multiple case study considered the competitive dynamics in two metal-mechanic leading and highly competitive organizations in terms of technological innovation. The study consists of interviews with 16 senior executives (12 CEOs and four CIOs) whose narrative made possible the reconstruction of twenty years of competitive history, considering relevant economic events or critical phases identified during each studied period. After the reconstruction of the competitive history, the identification of resources, and the critical economic events the senior executives were encouraged to give their opinion about the strategic potential of the identified IT resources. Understanding IT intervention was important to study the way matching to the adopted instrument the IT resources support competitiveness according to the RBV perspective. Content analysis, following Bardin's approach, was useful to the unveiling of meanings from different speeches based on inference or deduction and, simultaneously, following specific criteria to generate proper data for the theme structures. The IT resources did not contribute strategically dissociated from the other resources during the critical economic events faced by the two organizations. The two organizations recognized the strategic potential of using integrated resources for the development of new strategies and the maintenance of the existing ones. Among the results, the study revealed the different IT strategic attributes and their interaction with the critical events at the studied organizations. The strategic attributes were associated to some of the identified resources, such as Product Configurator (PC), Commercial Module (CM) and Virtual Manufacture (VM). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

On a local scale, sustainable tourism entails the development of an attractive pattern consistent with the framework of territorial resources and market expectations. Such a pattern should therefore be adaptive to any changes in the demand in new and dynamic terms, appealing to the territorial features of the local context. Hence, the analysis of territorial resources comes to play a key role in the development of tourism policies, providing local stakeholders with the competitive skills necessary to make their own strategic choices and to plan territorial development paths. The paper proposes a method for assessing the touristic competitiveness of an area with the aim of identifying the more appropriate strategic positioning, meant as a tourist-attractive configuration. This could allow the area itself to express its full potential without rejecting, on the one hand, its identity and vocation (spatial coherence) and, on the other hand, the specific requirements of the touristic market (market consistency). In order to be effective, tourism planning must be based on a model of analysis of competitiveness which should be able to understand and interpret the territorial vocations, transposing them into indications of prescriptive nature for political acting. The cooperation among firms in a network form has been stressed as an alternative organizational configuration in response to recent economic transformation. The increased number of initiatives and the empirical research scarcity on the network formation in Brazil motivated the present study. The main objective of this paper is to comprehend the factors which effect the establishment of network cooperation in the Southern Brazilian context. In order to achieve this objective a quantitative research was carried out with 443 enterprise representatives, associated to 120 cooperation networks. The empirical data were collected by the researchers in 2005 and statistically processed through a conjoint analysis. The results confirmed the theoretical propositions built by the researchers, appointing the relevance of factors, such as learning and innovation, increased scale and market power, and access to solutions. This paper argues that economic growth and environmental quality could be complimentary in a virtuous cycle of sustainable development, in opposition to the traditional view that suggests that environmental policies create obs- tacles to the productive sector. Even though the relationship between growth and environmental conservation has been historically characterized by antagonism, recent studies about competitiveness and environmental regulation show that firms can profit with "green" postures, consequence of efficiency and market gains, better capacity to attract capital and reduced risk perception. But this virtuous relationship can only be achieved if proper regulation mechanisms are established, moving away from the excessive rigidity of the current environmental policy mechanisms towards more flexible instruments that encourage changes in the business behavior. The paper aims to exam the Brazilian Textile Industry evolution process in the 1990's. It analyses the specific conditions of Brazilian commercial opening and the intensification of the technological innovation. From statistical information it verifies the impacts of these events on the structure, conduct and performance of the industry. The results show that the impacts of the commercial opening on this sector was more intense than in other industrial sectors what lead to an intense concentration movement in the period and to relevant implication on labor productiveness. The conclusions stress the present favorable perspectives of the Brazilian Textile Industry as to international competitiveness, restricted by specific public policies support and by investments intensification. This paper is concerned with analysis of labour productivity -- both individual and agregate -- in companies that integrate the shoemaking industry cluster in Franca, State of São Paulo, Brazil. It was an exploratory research limited to a non-statistical sample composed of 16 companies, two of them were large companies, seven were medium sized companies, and seven were small companies. Descriptive statistics and statistical inference techniques were applied (bivariate correlation test). The results showed that there is no evidence of homogeneity in labour performance productivity among companies that integrate the cluster, once they are unequal, non simetrical, showing that the shoemaking industry in Franca is closer to an assembly of similar companies than a cluster. This shows that there is a need for investment in management training in order to allow for the development of a cluster, which would in turn result in colective and dynamic competitive advantages. In the last years, due the growth of natural food consumption it had emerged questions concerning the competitive advantage of organic products in relation to other sources of foods such as traditional, genetically modified and ecological foods. The objective of this paper is identify the relevant factors concerning the purchase of organic foods. A sample, composed of 138 consumers of São Paulo State was utilized. The data treatment consisted of descriptive statistics and factor analysis. The results evidenced five competitive factors: (a) legal aspects and certification; (b) ethic of the company; (c) price and trading policy; (d) political influences and (e) environmental policy. Another important result when deciding what to buy an organic product was the impact of this production on the improvement of the environment, as decision to organic products. Finally, the study suggests the adjustment of the organic product demand to the needs of a demanding consumer as a way of improving its life quality and market share. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

En el presente trabajo se indaga sobre las causas de la pérdida de posicionamiento de la economía mendocina en el concierto nacional. En primer lugar, se describe el fenómeno; posteriormente, se reflexiona sobre los distintos significados del término “competitividad” como posible causa. Se distingue, además, entre dos fuentes de competitividad: una externa (tipo de cambio real) y otra interna (inversiones para aumentar la productividad), y se estima la cuenta de “Formación Bruta de Capital Fijo” (inversiones) para la economía mendocina. Finalmente, se hace una prueba estadística para la hipótesis señalada. Las principal conclusión a la que se arriba en el presente trabajo es que, tanto la competitividad que proviene de los precios relativos con el exterior (tipo de cambio real) como la que proviene del aumento de productividad por mayor inversión, han afectado la tasa de crecimiento de la economía de Mendoza. Se afirma, además, que la performance económica proviene de factores externos e internos asociados a la política económica provincial. En cuanto a los factores externos, puede mencionarse la política cambiaria (y seguramente comercial), la que está fuera del ámbito de la política provincial; y en cuanto a los factores internos, se destaca la política de inversiones. En este sentido, se concluye que es de vital importancia la creación de incentivos presupuestarios (inversión pública), económicos y políticos (inversión privada) para poder recuperar el posicionamiento de la economía mendocina en el concierto nacional. Adicionalmente se indaga sobre otros determinantes no económicos. This paper explores the possible causes of the loss of positioning of Province of Mendoza’s economy in the national concert. First, the phenomenon is described and related to the loss of competitiveness and Government performances, as possible causes. Second, this research distinguishes between two sources of competitiveness: an external one (real exchange rate) and an internal one (provincial investments as “Gross Fixed Capital Formation “account). Third, government performances are explained for each period. Finally, a statistical test is made for the hypothesis indicated. The main conclusion reached in this paper is that, both the competitiveness that comes from the relative prices abroad (real exchange rate) and the one that comes from the increase in productivity due to greater investment, have affected the rate of Mendoza's economy growth and then its positioning as percentage of national GDP. It is also stated that economic performance comes from external and internal factors associated with provincial economic policy. Regarding external factors, exchange (and probably commercial) policy, which is outside the scope of provincial policy, the investment policy stands out as one of main internal factor. In this sense, it is concluded that the creation of budgetary incentives (public investment), positive economic and political environment (private investment) is vital to recover the position of the economy of Mendoza in the national concert.

The understanding of relational changes and benefits provided by the network during its evolution also has an impact on enterprises’ dependency. This paper is therefore original as it makes the contribution essential to a nascent stream of research. Key methodological aspects: The conceptualization of this study is based on the Resource Dependence Theory to direct network survival. The methodology of the paper is based on a theoretical essay for the formation of an analytical background of the subject. It presents an insight in a manner that sheds light on the subject and sets the stage for future research. Summary of key results: Does not apply. Introdução: Os Campeonatos de Futebol são disputados em quase todos os países do mundo e chamam a atenção pela disputa de títulos em cada um deles. O Futebol é o esporte mais popular do mundo e muito dinheiro é movimentado em torno dele, contudo não é igualmente competitivo em todos os países. Objetivos: Neste artigo, aborda-se a competitividade de campeonatos nacionais de 12 países visando encontrar similaridades/diferenças entre eles. Amostra: A análise é feita com base em 60 campeonatos realizados 12 países selecionados segundo critério de desempenho. Considera-se, para cada país e ano, o campeão e o vice-campeão. Métodos: Define-se indicadores para a comparação, seleciona-se os indicadores e utilizando a técnica de clustering encontra-se grupos de similaridades. Resultados: Observa-se que existem três grupos de campeonatos, com respeito a competitividade. Em um deles, o menos competitivo, apresenta grande concentração de títulos obtidos por apenas dois clubes. Conclusões: Através da análise de agrupamentos pode-se apresentar a formação dos grupos, na qual os resultados são similares a análise com o Top5. ABSTRACT Introduction: Soccer championships are played in almost every country in the world and draw attention to the title challenge in each of them. Soccer is the most popular sport in the world and a lot of money is bustling around it, yet it is not equally competitive in all countries. Objectives: In this paper, the competitiveness of national championships in 12 countries is analyzed in order to find similarities/differences between them. Sample: The analysis is based on 60 championships held 12 countries selected according to performance criteria. It is considered, for each country and year, the champion and the runner-up. Methods: Indicators are defined for the comparison, the indicators are selected and using the clustering technique are groups of similarities. Results: It is observed that there are three groups of championships, with respect to competitiveness. In one of them, the less competitive, presents great concentration of titles obtained by only two clubs. Conclusions: Group analysis can show the group formation, in which the results are similar to the Top5 analysis.

This paper aims to investigate the link between business regulations, pillars of competitiveness, and new firms at country level using a structural equation model. The research developed to support this paper is based on the idea that entrepreneurship, measured as the process of new firm formation, is a vital link to the economic growth of countries. The data used belongs to a sample of 41 countries with emerging and advanced economies that appear simultaneously in three databases: The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), the Global Competitiveness Report (GCR), and the Doing Business Report (DBR). At country level, the process is hindered by the competitiveness conditions of the country's phase of economic development, and by the regulation and institutional arrangements that shape economic activity. Este artículo tiene como objetivo investigar la relación entre las regulaciones de los negocios, pilares de competitividad, y la creación de nuevas empresas a un nivel nacional utilizando un modelo de ecuaciones estructurales. La investigación desarrollada para apoyar este trabajo se basa en la idea de que el espíritu empresarial medido como el proceso de formación de nuevas empresas es un enlace vital para el crecimiento económico de los países. Los datos utilizados corresponden a una muestra de 41 países pertenecientes a las economías emergentes y avanzadas que aparecen de manera simultánea en tres bases de datos: el Global Entrepre-neurship Monitor (GEIVI), el Informe Global de Competitividad (IGC) y el Informe Doing Business (DBR). A nivel nacional, el proceso se ve obstaculizado por las condiciones de competitividad de la fase de desarrollo económico que atraviesa el país, así como por las regulaciones y los acuerdos institucionales que dan forma la actividad económica. O objetivo deste artigo é pesquisar a relação entre as regulações dos negócios, pilares de competitividade, e a criação de novas empresas em nível nacional utilizando um modelo de equações estruturais. A pesquisa realizada para apoiar este trabalho se baseia na ideia que o espírito empresarial, medido como o processo de formação de novas empresas, é uma ligação vital para o crescimento económico dos países. Os dados utilizados correspondem a uma amostra de 41 países pertencentes às economias emergentes e avançadas que aparecem, simultaneamente, em três bases de dados: Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), o relatório Global de Competitividade (IGC) e o relatório Doing Business (DBR). O processo no país está sob a influência decorrente das condições de competitividade da fase de desenvolvimento económico e da regulação e os arranjos institucionais que dão forma à atividade económica.

188. Influential factors in the competitiveness of mature tourism destinations

With a few exceptions, the traditional models that aim at identifying the factors that influence the competitiveness of tourism destinations are very difficult to operationalise because they need a large number of indicators to inform the concepts. This paper presents a different approach that postulates that researchers should try to identify the specific factors that impact competitiveness of tourism destinations according to the stage of the destinations’ life cycle. With the aim of identifying these specific factors, an extensive literature review was undertaken, focusing in particular on the papers that explicitly recognised that the destinations under analysis in the studies were in the mature stage of their lifecycle. From the literature review, we concluded that the specific factors able to negatively influence the performance of mature tourism destinations can be grouped into four areas. The first area concerns the deterioration of the destinations’ infrastructure; the second is related to the destinations’ management, namely the lack of a shared strategic vision among stakeholders; the third area is associated with the loss of economic vitality in the destinations; finally, the fourth area includes the impact of tourism development over the years on the territory, specifically social, environmental and cultural impacts. The results obtained from the empirical study allow us to conclude that the lack of environmental problems, not being overdeveloped in terms of construction and having maintained authenticity are all perceived by tourists as more important for the competitiveness of tourism destinations than factors normally considered more relevant, such as prices and the quality of accommodations. Muitos dos modelos de competitividade dos destinos turísticos apresentados até ao momento, para além de serem modelos genéricos que visam principalmente identificar os diferentes fatores que influenciam a capacidade de competir dos destinos turísticos e de serem muito difíceis de operacionalizar devido ao elevado número de indicadores que comportam, não equacionam a possibilidade de introdução de elementos explicativos da performance dos destinos. Uma abordagem diferente propõe que se identifiquem os fatores específicos suscetíveis de influenciar a competitividade dos destinos turísticos de acordo com a fase de desenvolvimento em que se encontram. Com o objetivo de identificar esses fatores específicos capazes de influir na capacidade de competir dos destinos turísticos maduros foi efetuada uma extensa revisão da literatura, privilegiando artigos que de forma explícita referissem que os respetivos destinos se encontram na fase de maturidade. Decorrente da revisão da literatura efetuada verificou-se que os fatores suscetíveis de influenciar negativamente a capacidade de competir dos destinos turísticos em fase de maturidade se podem agrupar em torno de quatro grandes áreas. A primeira área reporta-se à deterioração das infraestruturas do destino, a segunda relaciona-se com a gestão dos destinos, nomeadamente a falta de visão estratégica com que são conduzidos, a terceira área refere-se a alguma perda da vitalidade económica desses destinos e a quarta grande área identificada diz respeito aos impactos que a atividade do turismo teve sobre o território, nomeadamente os impactos ambientais, sociais e culturais. Os resultados obtidos no estudo empírico permitem-nos concluir que a ausência de problemas ambientais, não apresentar excesso de construção e ter mantido a autenticidade são percecionados pelos turistas como mais importantes para a competitividade dos destinos turísticos em fase de maturidade do que fatores habitualmente considerados mais relevantes, como os preços e a qualidade do alojamento.

A Floricultura é um dos mais importantes segmentos da agricultura brasileira, em função dos significativos recursos financeiros movimentados, do volume de mão-de-obra empregado e também pelo potencial de crescimento que possui, via incremento do consumo interno per capita e de exportação. Para tanto, questões como qualidade e gestão são fundamentais para que o setor se desenvolva e atinja esse potencial. O objetivo do trabalho foi desenvolver um método para os produtores identificarem, de maneira simples e rápida, o grau gerencial de suas atividades e adotarem fundamentos, critérios e práticas de gestão da qualidade que resultem na estruturação de seu negócio como uma empresa organizada. Os critérios preconizados pela Fundação Nacional da Qualidade foram adotados como linha mestra de seleção, priorização e hierarquização dos temas e indicadores gerenciais adotados no novo método. Dados primários e secundários coletados, priorizados e hierarquizados por meio da técnica Delphi constituíram os parâmetros de gestão da empresa agrícola. Para o Delphi, delineou-se um questionário, que foi aplicado a 41 especialistas do setor de flores, da iniciativa privada e de instituições públicas. Após a hierarquização, aqueles parâmetros foram convertidos em questões objetivas, utilizadas na elaboração de um segundo questionário, destinado à aplicação direta nas organizações envolvidas na atividade. Esse questionário, associado a uma tabela de pontuação, indica o grau de maturidade gerencial das organizações e aponta oportunidades de melhoria dos processos. A esse modelo deu-se o nome de Método de Identificação do Grau de Gestão (MIGG), aplicado a 14 organizações atuantes na floricultura brasileira. A consistência das respostas indicou que o método desenvolvido é adequado para identificar e avaliar o grau de gestão na produção de flores de forma rápida e a baixo custo.Floriculture is one of the most important segments of Brazilian agriculture due to the significant financial resources it involves, the amount of manpower employed and the potential for growth it presents through exportation and an increase of internal consumption. Therefore, quality and management are fundamental steps to make it grow. The objective of this paper was to develop a method to help producers of cut flowers in the task of identifying their managerial degree, leading them to adopt the theoretical basis, the criteria and activities of quality management that will result in an organized business. To develop this paper, the criteria recommended by the National Quality Foundation were used as a base line for the selection, the establishment of priorities and setting up of hierarchies of managerial themes and indicators to be adopted in the new method. Primary and secondary data, collected through this research, were given priorities and then hierarchy was set up through the Delphi technique in management parameters for agribusiness. A questionnaire was compiled and applied to 41 experts in the flower sector, both private and belonging to public institutions. Once set up the hierarchy of the parameters, these were converted into objective questions used to assemble a second questionnaire to be filled in by the organizations directly involved in the activity. This questionnaire, associated to a score table, indicates the managerial maturity degree of the organizations and points out the opportunities for process improvements. This model was called Management Degree Identification Method (MDIM). The MDIM was applied to 14 organizations involved in the Brazilian cut flower activity. The consistency in the answers obtained indicates that the method that was developed is adequate to quickly identify and evaluate the management degree in the production of cut flowers at a low cost.

Apesar do crescente interesse pelo empreendedorismo, existe uma lacuna no que se refere à existência de análises de sua relação com o crescimento econômico e com a competitividade. O objetivo deste estudo é analisar a taxa de empreendedorismo total, medida pelo GEM, avaliando-se quais as variáveis que possuem maior relevância na explicação do empreendedorismo. A pesquisa investigou, em caráter exploratório, a influência da renda per capita e de variáveis macroeconômicas e microeconômicas definidas no Global Competitiveness Index [GCI] na Taxa de Empreendedorismo Total dos países pesquisados pelo GEM. Para atingir tal fim, essa pesquisa utilizou uma amostra de 64 países, com dados transversais referentes ao ano de 2007; foram construídos dois modelos econométricos, utilizando-se, na estimativa das equações, o Método de Mínimos Quadrados. Os resultados encontrados indicam que a relação entre empreendedorismo e níveis de renda segue o padrão da curva U. Por outro lado, embora vários autores identifiquem que fatores de competitividade são importantes para o desenvolvimento do empreendedorismo, a pesquisa não chegou à mesma conclusão. O estudo aponta que esses aspectos parecem atuar em direção contrária à promoção do empreendedorismo nos países menos ricos, e de maneira insignificante nos países mais ricos. Despite the growing interest in developing research on entrepreneurship, the relationship between competitiveness and economic growth has been little explored. This paper shows the relationship between entrepreneurship and competitiveness. The aim of this study is to analyze total entrepreneurial activity - TEA, measured by the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor [GEM], evaluating the variables that have significant relevance in explaining entrepreneurship. The data were collected in 64 countries for the year 2007. This paper considers two econometric models obtained by the least-squares method. The results suggest that the relationship between entrepreneurship and levels of income follow the pattern of a U-shaped curve. Although several studies generally have demonstrated a positive relationship between factors of competitiveness and the development of entrepreneurship, the present study shows that the effects follow the opposite direction in developing countries. However, the empirical analysis confirms that factors of competitiveness have had a significant impact on development of entrepreneurship in more affluent economies.

This paper reviews the understanding I have gained from several years of research, and from several more years of ongoing discussions with industry leaders regarding the nature of competitiveness among tourism destinations. This understanding has been captured, in summary form, in the model of Destination Competitiveness/Sustainability (Ritchie and Crouch, 2003). This model contains seven (7) components which we have found to play a major role, from a policy perspective, in determining the competitiveness/sustainability of a tourism destination. In addition to the valuable understanding which these seven components provide from a policy perspective, the specific elements of each the major components provide a more useful/practical guidance to those who are responsible for the ongoing management of a DMO (Destination Management Organization). With this overview in mind, this paper will provide a detailed review and explanation of the model that I have developed with colleague, Dr. Geoffrey I. Crouch of Latrobe University in Melbourne, Australia. Based on previous presentations throughout the world, it has proven very helpful to both academics and practitioners who seek to understand the complex nature of tourism destination competitiveness/sustainability.

This paper suggests a simulation model to investigate how science and technology fuel economic growth. This model is built upon a synthesis of technological capabilities represented by national innovation systems. This paper gathers data of papers and patents for 183 countries between 1999 and 2003, as well as GDP and population for 2003. These data show a strong correlation between science, technology and income. Three simulation exercises are performed. Feeding our algorithm with data for population, patents and scientific papers, we obtain the world income distribution. These results support our conjecture on the role of science and technology as sources of the wealth of nations.Este artigo propõe um modelo de simulação para investigar a contribuição da ciência e da tecnologia para o crescimento econômico. O ponto de partida são os sistemas nacionais de inovação, um conceito que sintetiza a capacitação tecnológica das nações. Desta forma, o modelo pode preservar simplicidade e parcimônia. Os dados coletados (patentes, artigos e PIB e população, para 183 países) indicam uma forte correlação entre ciência, tecnologia e renda. Três exercícios com simulações são realizados para diversos momentos do tempo, mostrando a progressiva aderência do modelo a essas variáveis tecnológicas.

Este artigo apresenta uma análise das modificações observadas entre 1990 e 2008 nos fatores de competição vigentes na indústria calçadista do Vale do Rio dos Sinos voltada à exportação para grandes redes de varejo nos Estados Unidos. Essas alterações resultam das novas condições de competitividade que lhes foram impostas pela entrada de competidores asiáticos, principalmente chineses, no mercado. Foi utilizada a metodologia do estudo de caso exploratório qualitativo. As principais técnicas de pesquisa foram a entrevista semiestruturada e o grupo focado com gestores especialistas. Foram entrevistados gestores praticantes e especialistas acadêmicos com atividades nas empresas. Como resultado, observou-se que os atores do processo de produção para exportação de calçados aumentaram a importância das dimensões diversidade de modelos, qualidade, inovação, velocidade e flexibilidade de produto e reduziram a importância das dimensões volume de produção e preço de venda. As dimensões design, performance e pontualidade permaneceram inalteradas. A principal contribuição do artigo é desvelar elementos que permitam a formulação de hipóteses para estudos futuros, mais completos, acerca do impacto das alterações mercadológicas sobre fatores competitivos e estratégia de produção.The paper presents an analysis of the changes observed in competitive factors in the footwear industry aimed at the Brazilian-based export industry, due to the arrival of Asian producers, the Chinese in particular, in the market. The research method was a qualitative exploratory case study. The main research techniques were semi-structured interviews and focus groups. Managers, experts and academics involved in the companies participated. As a result, we discovered that the impact of these new producers has been to sharpen the following competitive dimensions: diversity of models, quality, innovation, speed of delivery and flexibility. The dimensions of volume and price declined in importance. The dimensions of design, performance and reliability of delivery remain unchanged. The paper's main contribution is to postulate a research hypothesis to be tested in a future survey dealing with competitive dimensions in the industry.

ABSTRACT This paper studies two aspects of the automobile insurance market in Brazil: first, it determines the degree of competition among insurance companies, and second, it estimates and analyzes the demand for automobile insurance. Most of the studies on the automobile insurance market in Brazil analyze the performance of the firms in this sector or present regional studies of the demand for insurance and its determinants. Thus, this study innovates both in showing the competition among the firms and estimating the demand for insurance in the country. The relevance of this research lies in the sequential and ordered way it analyzes the demand in a sector. Firstly, it identifies the type of competition that takes place in the sector and then, based on this, it proposes a structural framework based on optimizing decisions for estimating the price, income, and market power elasticities of demand. Furthermore, analyzing the insurance industry is of the utmost importance since it moves significant amounts of financial resources and provides an essential service in the economy. With information about the market structure and demand profile in the automobile insurance sector it is possible to propose strategic policies for individual firms as well as for the whole sector in order to introduce more efficiency. To analyze the degree of competitiveness, several concentration indices were calculated using annually-aggregated monthly data on the premium paid to all the automobile insurance firms in the period from 2001 to 2016. To estimate the demand for automobile insurance, half-yearly data from 2002 to 2010 for each one of the 27 federative units of Brazil were used. Two main findings are presented in this study. First, we find evidence of little concentration in the Brazilian automobile insurance market, with shares being well distributed among the players. Second, we estimate the demand for automobile insurance in Brazil and find a price-elasticity of -0.47 in the short run and -1.33 in the long run, while the lagged profitability has a negative impact on the amount insured: -0.21 in the short run and -0.59 in the long run. Income does not significantly influence the demand for insurance in Brazil.

O objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar a influência da crise sanitária da COVID-19 e da competição de mercado dos diferentes setores na estrutura de capital das empresas brasileiras. Apoiado nas teorias de trade-off e pecking order, utilizou-se uma amostra de empresas brasileiras listadas na B3, referente ao 2° trimestre de 2018 ao 1° trimestre de 2022. As variáveis determinantes da estrutura de capital utilizadas foram: rentabilidade, tamanho, tangibilidade, composição dos ativos, crescimento, a proxy de competitividade, foi medida pelo índice de Herfindahl-Hirschman e a Dummy da crise COVID-19. O método empregado devido à presença de heterocedasticidade e autocorrelação, foi a regressão por Mínimos Quadrados Generalizados Factíveis. Os resultados apoiaram as dinâmicas de endividamento frente ao pecking order, onde com maiores retornos tendem a precisar menos de captação de recursos externos e ao trade-off, mostrando que a relação com maior tangibilidade e firmas maiores geralmente têm maiores facilidades em conseguir financiamentos. Sobre a crise da COVID-19, conclui-se que ela teve influência positiva analisada pelo setor de mercado. RESUMOEste artigo pretende analisar o desenvolvimento e a natureza das estratégias de “não-mercado” adotadas por diversas entidades de serviço público americanas e espanholas que entraram nos mercados sul-americanos a partir dos anos 90 com vista a proteger as suas atividades da instabilidade institucional. O nosso objetivo é analisar a variação nas estratégias de “não-mercado” nas várias empresas, de forma a identificar eventuais padrões que possam ser desenvolvidos como propostas. Tendo em conta os dados secundários e as entrevistas com os executivos das empresas, identificamos uma extensa variação nas estratégias de “não-mercado”, seguidas pelas empresas estrangeiras que entram num novo mercado. Também detectamos indícios de uma convergência das estratégias de “não-mercado” em torno de um padrão multidoméstico. O nosso trabalho sustenta a tese de aproximação da estratégia de “não-mercado” a uma perspectiva integrada com uma estratégia competitiva. Nuestro objetivo es el de analizar la variación en las estrategias de “no-mercado” en las diversas empresas, para identificar eventuales patrones que puedan desarrollarse como propuestas. Teniendo en cuenta los datos secundarios y las entrevistas con los ejecutivos de las empresas, identificamos una extensa variación en las estrategias de “no-mercado”, que las empresas extranjeras siguen cuando entran en un nuevo mercado. También detectamos indicios de una convergencia de las estrategias de “no-mercado” en torno a un patrón multidoméstico. Nuestro trabajo sustenta la tesis de aproximación de la estrategia de “no-mercado” hacia una perspectiva integrada con una estrategia competitiva. También evidencia la función fundamental de las condiciones en el mundo de los negocios y especialmente el grado y forma del control social sobre el negocio, moldeando las opciones de la estrategia de “no-mercado”.

RESUMOEsta pesquisa tem como objetivo identificar as práticas de gestão de custos adotadas pelas empresas, no contexto de sua aceitação como necessárias ao atual ambiente de mercado. O estudo circunscreve-se às transformações ocorridas no ambiente de negócios nas últimas décadas, bem como às novas e/ou aperfeiçoadas práticas de gestão de custos. Entre tais práticas destaca-se o custeio e a gestão baseada em atividades, o custo da qualidade, o custo-alvo, o custeio do ciclo de vida e a análise da cadeia de valor, defendidas por alguns autores como as mais adequadas ao novo ambiente. São examinados os conceitos e justificativas que envolvem tais práticas de gestão de custo, sob um prisma crítico, confrontando as opiniões de diversos pesquisadores. Classificado como de natureza descritiva e exploratória, o estudo está fundamentado em uma pesquisa efetuada em 38 empresas de médio e grande porte, situadas nas regiões Oeste e Noroeste do estado do Paraná, cujos dados foram coletados por meio de entrevistas realizadas no período de setembro a dezembro de 2005. Para análise, utilizou-se da estatística descritiva. Como conclusão tem-se que as novas e/ou aperfeiçoadas práticas de gestão de custos não têm merecido a devida atenção por parte das empresas pesquisadas, contrariando o enfatizado pela literatura. Para os entrevistados, isso ocorre, dentre outros fatores, pelo não conhecimento de tais práticas, pela baixa relação custo-benefício para sua implantação e pela predominante preferência pelo aprimoramento das práticas convencionais.ABSTRACTThis paper focuses in cost management practices as competitive tools. Due to recent economic transformations, new cost management practices were developed and traditional ones were improved. Among them, activity-based costing, cost of quality, target cost, life-cycle cost and value chain analysis are referred in literature as the most appropriate to current business environment. Some papers about cost management practices are discussed, and concepts and reasons to use them are analyzed. The research was conducted in 38 big and medium companies during 2005, using an exploratory and descriptive study. Companies are located in West and Northwest Paraná, a Brazilian State. The findings were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results show the companies doesn't use new cost management practices or improved ones. The main reasons are: they don’t know these practices, the cost/benefit relationship isn’t favorable and the preference for conventional cost management practices.RESUMENEsta investigación tiene por finalidad identificar las prácticas de gestión de costos adoptadas por las empresas, en el contexto de su aceptación como necesarias al actual ambiente de mercado. El estudio se circunscribe a las transformaciones ocurridas en el ambiente de negocios en las últimas décadas, así como a las nuevas y/o perfeccionadas prácticas de gestión de costos. Entre estas prácticas se destaca el costeo y la gestión basada en actividades, el costo de la calidad, el costo meta, el costeo del ciclo de vida y el análisis de la cadena de valor, defendidas por algunos autores como las más adecuadas al nuevo ambiente. Se examinan los conceptos y justificativas comprendidos en estas prácticas de gestión de costo, desde un prisma crítico, confrontando las opiniones de diversos investigadores. Clasificado como de naturaleza descriptiva y exploratoria, el estudio se fundamenta en una investigación efectuada en 38 empresas de mediano y gran porte, situadas en las regiones Oeste y Noroeste del Estado de Paraná, cuyos datos se recolectaron por medio de entrevistas realizadas en el período de septiembre a diciembre de 2005. Para el análisis se utilizó la estadística descriptiva. Como conclusión se tiene que, las nuevas y/o perfeccionadas prácticas de gestión de costos no recibieron la debida atención por parte de las empresas investigadas, contrariando lo enfatizado por la literatura. Para los entrevistados, esto ocurre entre otros factores, por el desconocimiento de estas prácticas, por la baja relación costo-beneficio para su implementación y por la predominante preferencia por el perfeccionamiento de las prácticas convencionales.
