REQUIREMENTS engineering ,FACTORIES ,TRAINING needs ,EVALUATION methodology - Abstract
To meet the changing competence requirements for employees in engineering professions, education and training need to adapt accordingly. Learning factories offer various possibilities to design or integrate practice-oriented learning into training measures. Whether this approach in fact facilitates learning and competence development is rarely investigated. For this reason, the objective of this scoping review is to analyze and summarize the existing empirical findings on learning success and competence development in learning factories regarding their evaluation methods and results. Following standardized guidelines (PRISMA, JBI) for scoping reviews, 12 databases were researched. The literature screening led to the identification of 24 publications included in the final analysis. The results indicate that a variety of evaluation methods are used to assess learning and competences at learning factories and that criteria of all four competence facets (professional, methodological, social, and self-competence) can be enhanced at learning factories in general. As many of the identified studies show potential for improvement regarding the quality of the used methods and analysis of results, further studies on these topics are needed. Evaluations should be integrated into all training measures at learning factories to ensure learning success and competence development and to be able to readjust design, structure, and didactics where necessary. Abstract Aim The aim of this study was to investigate operating theatre nurses (OTNs) with managerial responsibility, and their self‐rated clinical competence and need for competence development in perioperative nursing. Design A cross‐sectional study was applied using a modified version of Professional Nurse Self‐Assessment Scale of Clinical Core Competence I. Method Data were collected from 303 OTNs in Sweden, 80 of whom indicated that they had managerial responsibility. Statistics analysis was used to identify the relationships between background variables to compare OTNs with and without managerial responsibility and their need for competence development. Results OTNs with an academic degree and managerial responsibility self‐rated their clinical competence higher compared with OTNs without an academic degree. It also turned out that OTNs with RN education and 1‐year advanced nursing in theatre care, and master's 60 credits had a lower need for competence development in cooperation and consultation, professional development and critical thinking.

Technological advances have caused dramatic increases in industrial productivity since the emergence of the Industrial Revolution. Although Industrial Revolution creates many new opportunities for companies, at the same time it causes many challenges arising from the ongoing automation and digitization of organizations. The latest changes, such as digitalization and robotics, have revolutionized the nature of work and created a demand for new set of skills to navigate the fourth industrial revolution i.e. Industry 4.0 However, the biggest challenge isn't technology; the focus is on the people. While digital technologies are rapidly becoming a commodity, success largely depends on companies and their employees. In order to face those challenges successfully, companies have to maintain a well qualified workforce. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to highlight the significance of human resource management in frame of Industry 4.0 revolution. The Industry 4.0 revolution has been driven by humans using creative minds to solve problems that were confronted. Moreover, Industry 4.0 is characterized by Cyber-physical systems (CPS), Internet of Things (IoT), Internet of Service (IoS), and Smart Factory and many more technologies that will require organizations with specific expertise. Therefore, the focus is on identifying competencies that are needed to fit well in Industry 4.0 revolution. The main theoretical contribution of this paper is a starting-point for further research of employee's competencies for Industry 4.0. In addition, the given preview of competence models will be useful for creating job descriptions that can ensure the survival of contemporary companies in the era of digitalization. According to identified relevance of competences, future research should focus on the development appropriate competence model and education system, which will fulfill the perceived gap in current practice.

Fluid intelligence and conscientiousness are important predictors of students’ academic performance and competence gains. Although their individual contributions have been widely acknowledged, less is known about their potential interplay. Do students profit disproportionately from being both smart and conscientious? We addressed this question using longitudinal data from two large student samples of the German National Educational Panel Study. In the first sample, we analyzed reading and mathematics competencies of 3778 fourth graders (Mage = 9.29, 51% female) and gains therein until grade 7. In the second sample, we analyzed the same competencies in 4942 seventh graders (Mage = 12.49, 49% female) and gains therein until grade 9. The results of (moderated) latent change score models supported fluid intelligence as the most consistent predictor of competence levels and gains, whereas conscientiousness predicted initial competence levels in mathematics and reading as well as gains in mathematics (but not reading) only in the older sample. There was no evidence for interaction effects between fluid intelligence and conscientiousness. We found only one statistically significant synergistic interaction in the older sample for gains in reading competence, which disappeared when including covariates. Although our findings point to largely independent effects of fluid intelligence and conscientiousness on competence gains, we delineate avenues for future research to illuminate their potential interplay.

The purpose of this essay is to study how carpenters in the Stockholm area experiencetheir own competence and what factors could affect their possibility for competencedevelopment that takes place in the workplace. The data for this qualitative study hasbeen collected via semi-structured interviews with eight carpenters. When analyzingthe material, we have mainly used Per-Erik Ellström's theory of workplace learning. The results show that the carpenters' experience of their own skills is shaped in theirdaily work, but also when others show appreciation for it in a work situation. Theresults also show several factors that are important for competence development inthe work, such as: sufficiently varied tasks, the opportunity to influence the workprocess and other aspects of work, support from others, an inner drive, good basicknowledge, confidence in one's own ability, feedback and clear instructions. Thethesis concludes that carpenters perceive their competence as high and that the mostimportant factor for competence development in their daily work is a balance betweendevelopment-oriented and adaptive-oriented learning.

Background: It is necessary for a firm to be profitable if the firm wants to survive longterm. One way to grow is to incorporate core competence as a business strategy and previousstudies have confirmed that core competence has a positive effect on profitability. Within theauditing industry competence is the most important resource and can therefore be a factor thatinfluences the firm’s profits. This study examines the Swedish industry since competence ishighly sought after in the Swedish auditing job market, and for several reasons it is unsuitableto study more than one country at the same time. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to understand what effect competence has on auditingfirms by looking at the relationship between profitability and core competence and explainpossible reasons for the relationship. Theoretical perspective: In the theoretical perspective the terms firm performance, competence, core competence are defined and the applied theories, agency theory andresource based theory, are presented. The terms and agency theory lead to formulation ofhypotheses. Method: The research applied two statistical analyses, multiple regression and Spearman’srank correlation. The multiple regressions showed the relationship and Spearman’s rankcorrelation was used for possible explanations for the relationship. Conclusion: The result shows that 5 out of 17 competencies have a significant relationshipwith profitability, whereof three of them are positive and two are negative. Competencedevelopment and importance can explain some of the competences’ relationship to profitsand others not. The results can give firms the knowledge about competencies and enablethem to make strategic decisions about the firm’s core competence and which ones that needmore focus.

Nurses’ competence development in municipal health services – Interactions between nursing school and work place Due to recent reforms, the increased requirements within comprehensive health care services, such as patients with complex and multiple diseases, need to be met by the municipalities. Nurses, thus need to increase their competence in accordance with the changes in municipal health services. The purpose of this study is to gain knowledge about the nurses’ daily work with a focus on learning and competence development. Data were collected by use of focus group interviews and analysed using qualitative content analysis. Findings demonstrate that nurses do not receive the appropriate training and experience needed to handle emergency situations. The lack of training causes uncertainty, which is not recognized by their superiors. Findings indicate that nursing schools need to be in closer dialogue with their students’ workplaces, both in planning and during their education.

This work raises the question, why the contents of trainings in further education are often not applied in operational and everyday business. The authors do not want to leave it at that but rather focus on the transfer of what has been learned in a training and how trainings should be structured after all so that transfer can indeed take place. For this purpose, the term ‘competence’ is introduced at first, which should not be confused with ‘knowledge.’ Competences rather are ‘applied knowledge.’ Then the concept of meta-competence is introduced. Meta-competence means a competence of using competences which is of interest especially to leaders. Finally we look at transfer competence, which is the ability to apply acquired knowledge in practice. Classic trainings fail to make knowledge relevant for practice because only little or no transfer competence is activated. Therefore, towards the end of this work, we introduce a training measure, which systematically activates transfer competence and focuses on competences. For this reason, the correct name of this type of training should be ‘competence development.’

Background: All the more patients are cared for in municipal health care and wound care occupies a large part of the municipally employed nurses' working hours. Negative wound pressure therapy (NPWT) is a medical device that has become more common and is an effective method for wound healing. For a nurse to be able to practice NPWT; formal and real competence is required. Aim: To investigate and describe nurses' competence and need for competence development regarding NPWT in municipal health care. Method: A mixed-method was used, and data were collected through a survey. The collected quantitative material was analyzed with descriptive and comparative analysis, whereas the qualitative data were analyzed with manifest content analysis with an inductive approach. Results: Most of the participants rated their formal and real competence low, while the formal competence was rated lower than the real competence. More than half of the participants felt they needed both formal and real competence development. However, most of the participants felt that their employers did not offer sufficient competence development regarding NPWT. Conclusion: The results indicate that nurses' formal and real competence regarding NPWT needs to increase. The results can be used to give employers an overview of nurses' competence in municipal health care. If nurses are offered individualized competence development, it could benefit their professional practice and increase evidence-based care. This in turn can benefit patients by shortening the wound healing time and reduce the risk of medical injuries.

In the spring of 2020, it was declared that the coronavirus Covid-19 is a pandemic. This led to restrictions in the school generally that meant a forced change that, among other things, career guidance would now take place digitally. With the questions ”What is the development of the narrow and wide digital guidance for career counsellors in upper secondary school?”, ”What advantages and/or disadvantages do career counsellors in upper secondary school see with digital guidance?” and ”What are the wishes of career counsellors in upper secondary school regarding possible competence development in digital guidance?” our hope is that we will achieve the purpose of the study. The aim is to investigate whether active career counsellors at municipal upper secondary schools in seven municipalities in northern Sweden consider themselves to possess the skills needed to adapt to a possible new way of working with digital guidance, and if so how this has developed in connection with Covid-19. A qualitative research method with semi- structured interviews was used for data collection. We have analyzed the results using Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT), and its concept of self efficacy, outcome expectations and personal goals. This study shows that the narrow guidance works relatively well digitally, while the wide guidance is perceived as a challenge. Our results highlights benefits of digital guidance such as efficiency and accessibility as well as disadvantages such as lack of personal contact. Other results indicates, among other things, that video calls are preferred to telephone calls by the career counsellors when it comes to career guidance, and that the demand for competence development is perceived as minimal. In the future, the informants can see that a combination of traditional and digital guidance is preferable, even when it becomes possible to implement more face-to- face guidance.

The purpose of this study was to answer three questions and to provide in-depth knowledge of how a company in the sales industry works to improve motivation and skills development. The focus of the study is directed with the help of Hertzberg's two-factor theory towards how the company develops competence, how managers motivate their employees and how the competence of the employees is preserved. I used semi-structured interviews at a large company in the sales industry. I then analyzed the results with support from Herzberg's two-factor theory and found patterns in the interviews with the managers and employees about both competence development and motivation. Herzberg's hygiene and motivation factors are the study's analytical tools for seeing what motivates and develops competence within the company. The company I investigated is in the car sales industry and it requires a lot of training, as you cannot sell without knowledge of the cars. The managers said that as a salesperson, you start with a two-week training period and then get a mentor to help you for the first couple of weeks. During the year, suppliers come and hold educational days with the employed sales people so that the knowledge is maintained and renewed. In order to develop, the sales people work with certain longer educations that are partly web-based, but also a few days of education at another location to become certified. Managers also say that they usually eavesdrop on their salespeople when they sell in order to subsequently give feedback, both positive and negative criticism, so that they can develop and become more motivated in their work, this is a good and easy way to train their salespeople to become even better. It also gives managers an opportunity to show that they are there for their employees. The sales people elaborate about the educations they attend continuously and that you get a certificate. They say that it is generous with training at the company, and appreciate the opportunity to develop and it motivates the sales people to continuously develop. They feel that their managers see them and that they have good relationships between colleagues, which also leads to good motivation at work because the relationships are strong and maintained. In the company, there is a high level of knowledge among both salespeople and managers, which shows a unity within the organization, which is positive. A lot of training and the strong relationships within the company affect the motivation and competence increases. Keywords: employees, competence, knowledge, leadership, sales, competence development, knowledge transfer, motivation, customer relationship, sales competence.

- Abstract
In spite of the expectations that exist regarding efforts to develop competence and in spite of the large amounts of resources devoted to it, there is a marked lack of empirically-based research on competence development in companies and other organizations. The purpose of this article is to present a review of research on strategies for competence development in organizations, their prerequisites and effects. More specifically, the following three questions will be addressed: (i) Why do organizations invest in competence development? (ii) What effects can realistically be achieved through competence development? (iii) What characterizes successful strategies for competence development in organizations? Before these questions are dealt with, different views of the meaning of the concepts of competence and competence development are presented and discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of the study is to examine line managers’ experiences of competence development in their professional role, within a large global organization in one of the head offices in central Stockholm. The empirical material was collected through qualitative semi-structured interviews where a thematic analysis was used as the method of analysis. The result showed that the organization provides good opportunities for competence development, but that competence development activities are neglected due to lack of time. All line managers’ described competence development as continuous in daily work through workplace learning. The result further showed that a few line managers’ perceive non-formal competence development activities as significant, on the other hand all considered digital education as the least important. The line managers' experiences were understood through the iceberg model that illustrates visible, partially hidden and hidden aspects of competence development. The need for competence development line managers’ perceived in their professional role is that classroom training should be customized to their specific work areas and also better adapted to the organization's working methods. In addition, the line manager’s also perceived a need for support from their immediate manager through closer feedback. Furthermore, it was discussed whether competence development is considered to be the responsibility of the individual or the organization. Finally, the significance of the line managers' experiences that emerged from the hidden and whether the competence development fulfils the needs of the line managers’ in the professional role is explained.

Background: Dynamic markets result in more and more companies having to digital transform their business in able to use the technological benefits that occur. At the same time a digital transformation will result in demand for new competencies where digital competencies is the most important for the companies long term survival. This rapidly changing market has been particular present in the retail industry and the demand for new digital competencies has been growing. But how does a retail company develop these digital competencies? Purpose: The purpose of this study is to create an understanding of how a retail company work with the development of digital competence with their employees. Completion: This study has a qualitative methodology with a hermeneutic perspective and an interative approach. The empirical material has been collected through semi-structured interviews with six respondents from one retail company. The respondents have been both from the management level and the employee level. Conclusion: Despite challenges in identifying what digital competence were lacking from a subjective point of view, it was the ability to have a flexible and evolving approach and digital knowledge that the lack of digital competence consisted of. These were developed through three approaches. The managers hired new employees to help the existing ones develop. The employees who were allowed to remain in the company were trained, both formally and informally, of which the informal training was most effective and most used. The managers also brought in consultants and partners to pass on the digital knowledge to the employees. In addition, the corporate culture and employees' attitude to change proved to be important for how effective the digital competence development became.

Healthcare is the workplace that is considered to be particularly vulnerable to work-related stress and has in recent years received attention in research. Nurses report that they experience stress because they do not have sufficient skills to handle their work assignments. At the same time, the workplace must ensure that employees possess the knowledge that is demanded both in the present and in the future. A workplace that focuses on skills development can help achieve both short- and long-term business goals. The purpose of the study was to investigate perceived stress in relation to the requirement in competence of healthcare professionals at a hospital. To answer the purpose of the study, a quantitative survey was carried out on healthcare professionals from various departments of the hospital, in which a total of 56 respondents participated in the study. Furthermore, the results were analyzed using SPSS and also correlation analysis presented by tables created with SPSS. The results of the study show that there was a significant relationship between the need for competence development and stress. The relationship between competence development and stress is based solely on the connection between the need for formal learning and stress, as there was no significant relationship between the need for informal learning and stress. The conclusion of the study is that increased competence development can result in healthcare workers to better manage work demands and may help to reduce the perception of stress.

This quantitative study has the purpose of mapping educational background and illustrate the possibilty of competence development in municipal elderly care. The study is based on answers from 108 electronic questionnaires from assistance nurses and nurse´s aides in municipal elderly care in Sweden. The result of the study shows that as much as 23,2% that are working in municipal elderly care is unqualified for their jobs. The study also shows that the municipalities around Sweden give their employees a good amount of competence development, but in the smaller municipalities there is less access to competence development than in the middle sized municipalities.

This chapter presents an overview of extant literature on competence proficiency scaling. To structure the field, the chapter distinguishes between three aspects of competence proficiency scaling: (1) methodological approaches to competence proficiency scaling and the methodological and conceptual critique of this phenomenon; (2) the contextual factors of competence proficiency scaling, including organizational and societal factors; and (3) the implications of competence proficiency scaling to the vocational and professional education and didactics. The chapter overviews a range of different approaches to competence proficiency scaling applied in the vocational education and training, higher education, and human resource management by synthesizing the perspectives to competence proficiency scaling from the different disciplines, such as educations science, education sociology, work psychology, and human resource management and development. Particular attention is paid to the variety of the functions and application fields of competence proficiency scaling, such as assessment of competence acquired in the learning and work process, identification and hierarchical structuring of the requirements of performance in the occupational fields, and identification of the potential of competence development and progression in the occupational fields.

The knowledge area of ambulance nurses’ competence represents a relatively new research area that cannot be regarded as having been fully explored and described by existing research. There is uncertainty regarding the required competence for ambulance nurses as well as the professional role of the ambulance nurse in ambulance care. It is also not clear if the ambulance nurse educational programmes reflect the demands placed on the professional requirements of ambulance nurses. The Swedish specialist education programmes for ambulance nurses could benefit from an adequateand up-to-date description of ambulance nurses’ professional competence, which can be used to develop all parts of the curriculum of the specialist nursing programme. The overall aim of this thesis was to explore ambulance nurses’ area of knowledge by describing aspects on competence and education in order to provide a comprehensive understanding of ambulance nurses’ competence as a basis for the development of the specialist nursing education curriculum. The results of this thesis are based on four studies. Several methods were used; the Delphi technique, the critical incident technique, the focus group method, facet theory analysis and qualitative content analysis. Data was collected using questionnaires, interviews and observations. The professional competence of ambulance nurses was found to be made up of multiple separate competences and can be described as complex and multidimensional. The professional demands placed on ambulance nurses’ competence are extensive andaspects of importance to their professional practice in the areas of cognitive, functional and personal competence are described. Formal education could be regarded as the foundation of competence development; however, we also found experienced-based learning in workplaces, including feedback and reflection on practice, to be of great importance to competence development. The ambulance nurse curriculum could be developed by including educational content designed in accordance with our findings concerning aspects on competence and through enhanced cooperation between universities and ambulance services. The results of this thesis can be used as a basis for systematic organisational measures for competence development in ambulance services and for curriculum development, as well as for the development of nationally agreed standards for ambulance nurses’ competence.

The purpose of this study was to examine the preschool teachers' view of their competence in art and art creation, as well as the competence they consider that a preschool teacher should have and how competence can develop. In this study, we define competence as something you own in the practice of preschool education and that preschool teachers can meet the challenges that the profession requires. Competence is about being able to carry out an action in practice, and in this study, the expression summarizes what a person can in the field of art and art creation. Our study addresses the following questions; how do preschool teachers perceive their competence in art and art creation? What do the preschool teachers think they need in competence in art and art creation? What role do preschool teachers play in promoting their own and children's competence development in art and art creation? Four preschool teachers and a teacher for elementary school's older years who worked in preschool since her education was interviewed with a qualitative interviewing method from a sociocultural perspective. The results show that the competencies that preschoolers apprehend is competence that includes material knowledge, the ability to link activities with curriculum and theories, and to make it a fun-filled activity for the children. In order to develop their competence, the result shows that they use continuous education and collegial learning and in interaction with children.

Clonal populations of microbial cells often show a high degree of phenotypic variability under homogeneous conditions. Stochastic fluctuations in the cellular components that determine cellular states can cause two distinct subpopulations, a property called bistability Phenotypic heterogeneity can be readily obtained by interlinking multiple gene regulatory pathways, effectively resulting in a genetic logic-ANTI gate. Although switching between states can occur within the cells' lifetime, cells can also pass their cellular state over to the next generation by a mechanism known as epigenetic inheritance and thus perpetuate the phenotypic state. Importantly, heterogeneous populations can demonstrate increased fitness compared with homogeneous populations. This suggests that microbial cells employ bet-hedging strategies to maximize survival. Here, we discuss the possible roles of interlinked bistable networks, epigenetic inheritance, and bet-hedging in bacteria.

Eric Mazur, professor at Harvard University, began in 1990 using what would later become flipped classroom. He wanted to try a new method in teaching. He let the students read from the textbook in advance of a lecture so that when they came to class they were all prepared. The students would then work with practical exercises in the classroom where they got to apply the beforehand studied material. This report seeks to investigate how companies work with increasing the internal competence through education. The main purpose of the report is to evaluate the potential of flipped classroom as a method for competence development in company environments. The theoretical framework upon which this thesis is build consist mainly of Jack Mezirow and his work about adult learning and how to successfully educate adults, and Knud Illeris’s work on how knowledge is acquired by the individual. Competence as a concept can be traced back to Aristoteles fronesis, which translates approximately to practical knowledge. Today there is no universal definition of competence and different institutions ascribe different meaning to the word. The data was collected by using participating observations on courses given by the evaluated company along with questionnaires that were handed out at the observed courses. This along with interviews and interaction pattern observations at the given courses constituted the result of this thesis. The result of this indicates that the course participants experience a need for more discussions and exercises. The participants experience that time could be used more efficiently to cover the intended material. The result also indicates that there is a desire for more exchange of experience among the participants and the course subject needs to be better anchored and related to each participant’s work and life situation. This study shows that flipped classroom is a method which could be used to make course participant more activated and through that facilitate a better and more effective learning. This would benefit the economy of the company more. It has surfaced during this study that a future area in which there is a need for research is in how company work with validating the acquired knowledge during a course.

Nurses’ competence development in municipal health services – Interactions between nursing school and work placeDue to recent reforms, the increased requirements within comprehensive health care services, such as patients with complex and multiple diseases, need to be met by the municipalities.

This thesis presents a study of competence and knowledge needs of project engineers to be able to manage projects successfully. The aim of the thesis is to identify how to feedback competences and experiences into the project management process. The guidebook provides guidance to what a project engineer needs to focus on to become more skilled and to become a more effective project manager. A literature study was performed to get a better understanding of the project manager's role. A detailed study was performed on the duties of project engineers and project managers. The literature study was based on books and reports as well as an information research by the Internet. An interview with five project managers and five project engineers was conducted to compare theory with practice. Based on the respondents' answers and the results from the literature study a handbook outlining what the project engineer can do to improve their project management skills. The thesis concludes that competence development depends on individual motivation. Every individual have their own goals and they are stimulated by different motivational factors. Some aims high to become CEO for a company, while other are satisfied with their positions and it doesn’t mean that all project engineer / project manager strives for continuous development. The main question of the thesis was: "What skills are needed for project engineers to develop their skills in project management?”. The results of the thesis show that without learning from their mistakes and problems that were made in previous project and by making their own mistakes the project engineer will not develop or become a more efficient project manager. By learning from experiences from previous projects the project engineer can save significant time when facing similar problems in new projects. Recording and using this knowledge may contribute to more effective solutions and thus reducing time lost unnecessarily.

Testing and analysis of measurement data is a major part of the workday for development engineers within the section Fluid and Emission Treatment to assure the quality of products developed by Scania CV. The ineluctable variation and therefore uncertainty of results can be quantified and discussed with the use of statistical methods. The overall objective of this study is to examine how the competence of development engineers can be improved within the area of statistics. This has been done by relating the concept of competence with the use of statistical methods to analyse experimental data and by investigating which factors that influence the competence of the engineers. Observations of the daily operations, interviews and a focus group with development engineers and a workshop with management personnel, has been used as research methods in this study. The results show that the desired competence, from the perspective of the individual, consists of knowledge, motivation and support. It is important that none of these parts are neglected when the competence of engineers is to be strengthened. The demand of statistical analysis by management and decision makers is a factor that has been shown to have great influence on the competence of development engineers. The competence of development engineers is also influenced by which tools and other types of support the organisation offers. The conclusion is that competence development is more comprehensive than a one-time-effort, as for example a short course, since the competence needs to be maintained and develop as the business evolves. A continuous support from the organisation would probably contribute to a more active development of competence. Knowledge sharing between colleagues on internal digital platforms has great potential and could be a component of a continuous support for the development engineers.

Masteroppgave i spesialsykepleie – Universitetet i Agder 2014 Background: To ensure competence it is important to use good sources of knowledge and learning tools that provide good learning outcome. E-learning is considered to be the future focus to ensure a common updated competence. Purpose: Purpose of this study was to illuminate what influences the use of e-learning as a learning tool among nurse anesthetists. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study using a questionnaire based on the technology acceptance model (TAM). Based on previous theory and research, we added organizational factors to TAM. We performed a cross-sectional study among 369 nurse anesthetists in helse sør-øst. 110 respondents completed the study. We used descriptive statistics, chi square test and independent samples t-test to answer research questions in the study Results: In general, nurse anesthetists have positive attitudes toward e-learning as a learning tool. Women are significantly more positive than men. Age plays a role in how easy it will be to use e-learning. Organizational factors play into use, especially time is important. Most people find that e-learning gives them a good learning outcome, but are afraid that this kind of learning should replace all other kinds of learning. Conclusion: Anesthesia nurses have positive attitudes towards e-learning. It will facilitate further investments in e-learning as a learning tool. But it turns out that most people use it only once in six months or less. Organizational factors have influence on use and it may here be made to facilitate the implementation of e-learning.

The reason for my choice to do a study about the vision of competence of the teachers at the Restaurant Management and Food Programme, stems from a curiosity regarding the usage of professional expertise in combination with pedagogy by these teachers. Did these teachers consider professional knowledge the most momentous, or would they rather have the division between pedagogy and professional knowledge more evenly distributed? The purpose of this study was to explore the approach of teachers at the Restaurant Management and Food Programme, toward their own professional practice. I myself am employed in the restaurant and food area, and therefore I also have an interest in it, hence the restriction of only using teachers at the Restaurant Management and Food Programme in the study. The study that has been done has been carried out with the help of a qualitative type study, based on five interviews in a semi- structured type model. Of the results appear that the respondents define the professional skills of a teacher as to have both deep and wide-ranging professional restaurant knowledge, have an educational training and have a good relationship with the students. Respondents keep up to date with restaurant news through traveling, literature and industry publications, as well as working in the restaurant business on the side. On the question of skill development, all the partakers in the study declare that they would like to take internship positions in the restaurant sector to further their competence. By matching the responses of the respondents with Malténs (1995) list of professions, I have come to the conclusion that a good and knowledgeable teacher should possess knowledge in many different areas to be considered competent.

Innovation has many forms and thus many ways of being acquired. Restricted by time and space, our aim here is limited to showing some of the ways to develop of innovation in learning. We suppose that certain skills are efficient in reaching this goal such as modeling, situation management, operational control, teamwork, appropriate orientation and that, in addition, certain personal or social factors like motivation also play a role. We try to provide a theoretical conceptual basis for designing guidelines for innovative learning and provide a foundation for its continued development. We believe that it is crucial to establish reference methods to strengthen the relationship between innovation and learning. This paper, which focuses on the theoretical and conceptual abilities to develop innovation in learning, describes the relevant elements of an overarching framework for these references by establishing the individually based abilities required for effective participation in innovative learning, and highlights those skills that are important for overall successful learning.

Rezultatai. Įvertinus respondentų podiplominių studijų kvalifikacijos kėlimo poreikį ir galimybes, paaiškėjo, kad tik puse (47,6 proc.) visuomenės sveikatos specialistų turi galimybę tobulinti profesinius įgūdžius. Visuomenės sveikatos specialistai didžiausią žinių trūkumą nurodė turintys šiose srityse: pagrindinių sveikatos priežiūros rodiklių interpretavimas ir vertinimas, epidemiologinių visuomenės sveikatos duomenų vertinimas, įvykdytų tyrimų analizė, sveikatos sistemos ekonominių rodiklių vertinimas. Kaip dažniausią būdą profesiniam raštingumui gerinti didžioji dalis visuomenės sveikatos profesionalų (69,2 proc.) rinkosi mažai patikimas priemones - įvairius seminarus ar tobulinosi savarankiškai (internetas, vadovėliai, kita literatūra). This article is an overview of a conducted survey among Public health professionals in 2010. The aim of the study is to examine how Public health professionals assess their knowledge in various areas of public health workforce and what new Public health-related professional competencies they wish to improve most. The object of research – Public health professionals of Kaunas, Siauliai and Marijampole Public health centers and their branches, as well as office workers of Kaunas, Siauliai and Marijampole Public health bureaus. There were 190 questionnaires delivered, 148 questionnaires were filled in and returned by respondents (response rate: 77%). Results. It was estimated that almost half (47.6%) of public health professionals have an opportunity to improve their professional skills. Public health experts indicated the greatest lack of knowledge at the following fields: the analysis and explanation (interpretation) of basic health indicators; public health epidemiological data evaluation; a research data analysis and health economic data assessment. As the most common method to improve the professional competence, 69.2% respondents chose a few trusty tools - various workshops or studied independently (internet, textbooks or other literature).

Background: Trauma is a worldwide problem. In Sweden 4500 people die annually of trauma-related injuries. Lennquist (2007) argue/mean that optimized organization and improved competence in trauma care could decrease the number of deaths due to trauma. Aim: To investigate operating nurses' own view of their competence in trauma care in relation to Landstinget Västmanland's model for competence, based on Benner's stages of clinical competence. Method: Descriptive analysis of quantitative data. Operating nurses working in a operative department were given questionnaires to respond to. The questions were based on Landstinget Västmanlands stages of competence and The Swedish Nurses Association's six core competencies. Results: Thirty-six operating nurses worked at the department during the week the questionnaires were distributed and fifteen chose to participate. Nine operating nurses (n=15) were classified as "experts", but performed duties at a lower competency level. The majority of the operating nurses responded "agree completely" to four of the six core competencies and "partly true" on the remaining two. All participants had participated in some kind of trauma education. Conclusion: There is a need for greater structure and better guidelines regarding operating nurses' competence development since experts preformed their duties at a lower competency level. Operating nurses had good knowledge in four of the six core competencies but needed to improve their knowledge in two areas.

This study investigated the main motives for why some registered nurses choose to continue on the path of higher educational studies. More specific, this study aimed to explore how registered nurses with additional academic marks in nursing science viewed academic competence development. Following questions were used to capture the complexity of the phenomenon of academic competence development; i) What did competence development involve for the registered nurses? ii) What kind of knowledge did they strive to develop and why? iii) What were the main motives for their competence development? and finally iv) What factors did they perceive as facilitators and/or barriers for competence development? Qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten female registered nurses, who were either still enrolled or had completed basic or advanced academic studies in Nursing Science. The informants worked in different kind of specialties either in secondary or in primary care. All the interviews were taped and transcribed before being analyzed inspired by the model of content analysis as described by Graneheim and Lundman. Established theories and definitions for the concepts of competence, knowledge and motivation were used to understand, explain and/or to evaluate the findings. The content analysis revealed four categories,‘motivations’, ‘conditions’, ‘competences’ and finally ‘consequences’. Each category was also interpreted to include several sub categories. One of the main findings coming out from this study was the obvious culture clash experienced to occur in meetings between the informants and newly graduated registered nurses or nursing students. Experiencing this culture clash meant that the informants became strongly motivated to pursue further degrees in nursing science. Their studies mainly aimed at increasing their knowledge within their own speciality but also to increase their skills in appraising and performing nursing research. Their own individual and personal developments were interpreted to be both a motive and a consequence of taking on further academic competence development. In the analysis of the nurses stories it became obvious that clinical practice were not yet ready for nurses who departures from a theoretical and academy knowledge base in their everyday practice. Hence, practical and productive nursing knowledge, mainly described by the nurses as abilities, were more highly valued than theoretical academic knowledge. The nurses experienced that the process of continuing to develop their academic competences could be compared by a journey and in this case more specific an academic journey.
