Boosted by cost cuts and a stake sale, Royal Philips Electronics N.V. reports better-than-expected third-quarter net profit of 534 million euro, compared with profit of 176 million euro a year earlier. Revenue increased 9.6% to 6.16 billion euro.

Bogged down by 1.3 billion euro in write-offs, Philips Electronics N.V. reports a fourth-quarter net loss of 1.47 billion euro, and an 8.9% drop in sales to 7.62 billion euro. Boosted by the sale of its stake in Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Philips Electronics N.V. posted a 7.9% third-quarter net profit increase to 357 million euro, while sales dropped 2% to 6.33 billion euro. Earnings before taxes, amortization, and interest fell to 128 million euro from 444 million euro a year earlier.
