Abstract

The female mountain pine beetle lays its eggs under the bark of the lodgepole pine, after which the larvae emerges and consumer the tree from the inside. As a result, tens of millions of tree from the United States to Canada have been destroyed and it is expected that almost all the mature lodgepole pine trees will be lost once the infestation has run its course. Local authorities are limited in what they can do as a result of cutbacks and little can be done in any case to control the infestation.
