Beyond the “macro” scale of interaction within and beyond the Horn of Africa also exists a “micro” undercurrent of peoples, goods, ideas and technologies impacting on the regions beyond their origin. Transported from one culture to another, they could be appropriated and adapted to varying degrees beyond their own, from overwhelming to virtually nil impact. Such assimilation – whether physical importation, direct copying (“imitation”), adoption, adaptation, incorporation, interpretation, imposition or even complete rejection of an external “something” beyond its normal cultural sphere – is a by-product of long-distance interaction and movement of goods and, to varying degrees, the ultimate result of networking beyond the major players. Over the past two millennia, the Red Sea/Horn of Africa region has witnessed the rise and fall of numerous cultures, all of whom interacted with others within Africa and beyond, by both land and sea. Texts and excavations have documented what was transferred, but some sense of the multiple meanings and rationales behind acceptance of these specific goods and ideas can be gleaned by considering them beyond their own cultural borders. In the present paper, I discuss some ongoing thoughts and somewhat speculative observations, ideas, inferences and questions (some not yet possible to answer) to extend beyond the simple enumeration of foreign goods and ideas to consider their implicit impact and interaction with people who encountered them, using Aksumite Ethiopia/Eritrea as a case study, and the goods traded at Adulis listed in the Periplus Maris Erythraei as a starting point for my discussion. En dehors des interactions à grande échelle se déroulant dans la Corne de l’Afrique et au-delà de celle-ci, il existe, à un niveau réduit, un flot d’individus, d’idées et de techniques qui ont des effets au-delà de leur origine. Véhiculés d’une culture à une autre, ils pouvaient faire l’objet d’appropriation et d’adaptation à divers degrés, dans un éventail allant du remarquable à l’inexistant. Cette assimilation ‒ qu’elle soit une importation directe, une copie, ou imitation, une adoption, une adaptation, une incorporation, une interprétation, une imposition et même le rejet complet d’un « quelque chose » d’étranger ‒ est le produit dérivé des échanges à longue distance de biens, et, à des degrés divers, le résultat final des réseaux reliant les principaux acteurs. Durant les deux derniers millénaires, la mer Rouge et la Corne de l’Afrique ont vu l’essor et la chute de nombreuses cultures, qui toutes ont interagi avec d’autres en Afrique et au-delà, par mer et par terre. Les textes et les fouilles ont donné des renseignements sur ce qui était transporté, mais, en considérant ces biens et ces idées au-delà de leurs propres frontières culturelles, on peut avoir une idée de ce que signifiait cette acceptation. Dans cet article, je propose sous forme spéculative des observations, des idées, des déductions et des questions (parfois sans réponses) dans le but d’aller au-delà d’une simple énumération des marchandises et idées étrangères et de prendre en compte leur effet sur, et les interactions avec, les hommes qui les ont rencontrées. Je prendrai pour objet d’étude l’Éthiopie et l’Érythrée axoumites, et la liste des marchandises échangées à Adulis du Périple de la mer Érythrée comme point de départ de ma réflexion.

La fouille des sites d’Ayn Soukhna puis du Ouadi el‑Jarf sur la côte égyptienne de la mer Rouge a permis, ces vingt dernières années, de réévaluer l’implication de l’État pharaonique dans cette zone et sa participation aux réseaux d’échanges qui la traversent. Dès le début de l’Ancien Empire, la royauté égyptienne, dont les besoins en cuivre étaient considérablement accrus par la politique de grands travaux dans la vallée du Nil, a mis en place un système expéditionnaire permettant d’envoyer des équipes de mineurs dans la zone du Sud‑Sinaï, à la fois par voie terrestre et maritime. Cela a impliqué l’établissement de ports intermittents – occupés uniquement le temps des expéditions – sur la côte maritime, qui servaient de plateforme logistique pour les expéditions : Ouadi el‑Jarf d’abord, Ayn Soukhna ensuite. Les travaux récents menés sur ces deux sites permettent en outre désormais de mieux connaître le quotidien des expéditions, l’organisation de leur approvisionnement, ou encore d’étudier les activités artisanales qu’ils pratiquaient, ce qui constitue un apport notable à l’histoire des techniques de l’Égypte antique. The excavation of the sites of Ayn Sukhna and then Wadi el‑Jarf on the Egyptian coast of the Red Sea has made it possible, these last twenty years, to reassess the implication of the Pharaonic State in this area and its participation in the networks of exchanges in the Red Sea. From the beginning of the Old Kingdom, the Egyptian monarchy, whose need for copper was considerably increased by the policy of major works in the Nile Valley, set up an expeditionary system that allowed it to send teams of miners to the South Sinai zone, both by land and by sea. This involved the establishment of intermittent harbours – occupied only during the time of the expedition – on the maritime coast, which served as a logistical platform for the expeditions: Wadi el‑Jarf first, then Ayn Sukhna. The recent work carried out on these two sites also allows a better understanding of the daily life of the expeditions, the organization of their supply, or to study the craft activities they practiced, which is a significant contribution to the history of techniques in ancient Egypt.

The Smaragdus region was the only known source of emeralds in the Roman Empire. This paper deals with several aspects of the extraction and commercialization of this gemstone in the Egyptian Eastern Desert in the Roman period. Through the analysis of different sources of information, including the latest archaeological data available, we will discuss aspects such as emerald mine workers, the ownership issue and changes in the trade network in the Late Roman period. La région de Smaragdus est la seule source connue d’émeraudes dans l’Empire romain. Cet article traite de plusieurs aspects de l’extraction et de la commercialisation de cette pierre précieuse dans le désert Oriental égyptien à l’époque romaine. Grâce à l’analyse de différentes sources, y compris les dernières données archéologiques disponibles, nous aborderons plusieurs thèmes, tels que celui des travailleurs des mines d’émeraudes, la question de la propriété et les changements dans le réseau commercial de la fin de la période romaine.

The excavations of the Roman military fort of Didymoi in the Eastern Desert have yielded significant number of ostraca that can be associated with learning to write and read. While chronologically this evidence spans the two centuries of the fort’s existence, the nature of texts and their chronological distribution are far from homogenous. Taking into account the distinction between systematic school curriculum and ad hoc acquisition of immediately applicable skills, this paper aims to give a diachronic overview of educational practices at the fort. Les fouilles du fort romain de Didymoi dans le désert Oriental ont permis de découvrir un nombre important d’ostraca que l’on peut associer à l’apprentissage de l’écriture et de la lecture. Bien que ces documents proviennent de niveaux datant des deux siècles d’existence du fort, la nature des textes et leur distribution chronologique sont loin d’être homogènes. En tenant compte de la distinction entre programme d’enseignement scolaire systématique et acquisition ponctuelle de compétences immédiatement applicables, cet article vise à donner un aperçu diachronique des pratiques éducatives attestées dans le fort.

Aynouna est un port qui peut probablement être identifié à Leukè Komè, un lieu mentionné par Strabon et le Périple de la mer Érythrée. Pendant quatre hivers consécutifs, ce site a été fouillé par une mission polono-saoudienne (2014‑2018). Cet article présente les témoignages recueillis de la présence nabatéenne aux ier siècle av. J.‑C. et ier siècle ap. J.‑C., notamment des monnaies, une inscription et un aqueduc. The site of Aynuna is probably identical to the port of Leuke Kome mentioned by Strabo and the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea. It was excavated during four consecutive winters (2014‑2018) by a Polish-Saudi mission. This paper presents the evidence for a Nabataean presence in the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD, such as coins, an inscription and an aqueduct.

In his description of the Arabian Peninsula, Pliny the Elder mentions a port and a homonymous island named “Sambrachate” between Canauna (today al‑Qunfudha) and Acila (on the Strait of Bāb al‑Mandab) on the southern coast of the modern Red Sea. The ethnonym “Shabraqatān” found in a South Arabian (Sabaean) inscription from the region of Ṣa‘da in Yemen makes it possible to locate the port Sambrachate in the bay of Jāzān (or Jīzān) and to identify Sambrachate island with one of the islands of the Farasān archipelago. Dans sa description de la péninsule Arabique, Pline l’Ancien mentionne un port et une île homonyme nommés « Sambrachate » entre Canauna (aujourd’hui al‑Qunfudha) et Acila (sur le détroit de Bāb al‑Mandab) sur le littoral méridional de la mer Rouge actuelle. L’ethnonyme « Shabraqatān » relevé dans une inscription sudarabique (sabéenne) de la région de Ṣa‘da au Yémen permet de localiser le port Sambrachate dans la baie de Jāzān (ou Jīzān) et d’identifier l'île Sambrachate avec l’une des îles de l’archipel des Farasān.

This paper aims to compare the Arabic and Chinese written sources that mention the ports of trade and other maritime structures involved in the trade of frankincense and other aromatics along the shores of the Arabian Peninsula between the 8th and the 14th century. Comparing these texts with the available archaeological data will help identify harbours and chart the evolution of this trade over time. This essay highlights the maritime networks and organises them according to a hierarchy. In keeping with previous archaeological studies carried out in southern Yemen, my goal in a near future is to undertake further investigations along the coast of the Dhofar area (Sultanate of Oman) in order to refine our understanding of the role played by this region in Indian Ocean trade. Cet article vise à comparer les sources écrites arabes et chinoises qui mentionnent les ports de commerce et autres structures maritimes impliquées dans le commerce de l’encens et d’autres espèces aromatiques le long des côtes de la péninsule Arabique entre le viiie et le xive siècle. La comparaison de ces textes avec les données archéologiques disponibles permettra d’identifier les ports et de retracer l’évolution de ce commerce au fil du temps. Cet essai met en évidence les réseaux maritimes et les organise selon une hiérarchie. Dans la lignée des précédentes études archéologiques menées dans le sud du Yémen, mon objectif est d’entreprendre prochainement d’autres recherches le long de la côte de la région de Dhofar (sultanat d’Oman) afin d’affiner notre compréhension du rôle joué par cette région dans le commerce de l’océan Indien.

All three of the Christian monasteries excavated in the Arab-Persian Gulf, probably founded at the end of the Sasanian era (ca 6th-7th centuries?) and occupied until the 9th century, are located on islands. The insularity of the Kharg, al‑Qusur and Sir Bani Yas monasteries raises questions, and this paper will analyze the many factors that could explain this location. From a practical point of view, the islands offered many natural resources that were efficiently exploited by the monks. In the perspective of its missionary policy, the Church of the East would have benefited from the network of monasteries on the route to China. Symbolic arguments, if not decisive, may have influenced the choice to settle on islands, seen as enabling the isolation of the monks from the outside world and protecting the monasteries from a hostile power, the Sasanian persecution still being in the monks’ memories. Les trois monastères chrétiens fouillés dans le golfe Arabo-Persique, probablement fondés à la fin de l’ère sassanide (vers les vie-viie siècles ?) et occupés jusqu’au ixe siècle, sont tous situés sur des îles. Cette insularité des monastères de Kharg, al‑Qusur et Sir Bani Yas soulève des questions, et cet article analyse les nombreux facteurs qui pourraient expliquer ces emplacements. D’un point de vue pratique, les îles offraient de nombreuses ressources naturelles qui étaient exploitées efficacement par les moines. Dans la perspective de sa politique missionnaire, l’Église d’Orient aurait bénéficié du réseau de monastères sur la route de la Chine. Des arguments symboliques, sinon décisifs, ont pu influencer le choix de s’installer sur des îles, considérées comme permettant d’isoler les moines du monde extérieur et de protéger les monastères d’une puissance hostile, la persécution sassanide étant toujours présente dans la mémoire des moines.

The 34 articles published in this volume form the proceedings of the 9th Red Sea conference held at Lyon in July 2019, whose core topic was the “spatiality of networks in the Red Sea”, including the western Indian Ocean. In the networked space that the Erythra Thalassa never ceased to be, stable factors such as landscape, climate, and wind patterns have been constantly entangled with more dynamic elements, such as human activity. The contributors to this volume explored how the former were integrated into the countless networks formed by humans in the region, and how these were impacted by spatial constraints over the long course of history. This volume offers a wide range of stimulating contributions. The first articles are devoted to medieval and modern European sources on the Red Sea and its exploration, and to the networks of knowledge dissemination about the region. They are followed by papers relating to the main nodes, the ports and islands of the Red Sea. Several articles are then focusing on the agency of hinterland populations in the networks, and the relationships between the regions bordering the Red Sea and central powers that governed them, often from distant lands. Production and consumption networks are the subject of the next articles, to assess the extent and nature of exchanges and to shed light on the archaeology of circulations. The logistics of exploration, exploitation and trade in the regions bordering the Red Sea are then examined. The last series of papers focuses on regions where archaeological work started only recently: Somaliland, Tigray, and the Horn of Africa. Thanks to all the participants, whether they have exploited new data or re‑examined long-known material, the 9th edition of the “Red Sea Project” gave rise to vibrant debates, showing that the Erythra Thalassa remains an endless source of knowledge. Les 34 articles publiés dans ce volume forment les actes de la 9e édition de la « Red Sea conference » qui s’est tenue à Lyon en juillet 2019. Son thème central était la « spatialité des réseaux en mer Rouge », mais aussi dans l’océan Indien occidental. Dans l’espace connecté que l’Erythra Thalassa n’a jamais cessé d’être, des éléments stables, tels que le paysage, le climat ou le régime des vents, ont été constamment enchevêtrés avec des éléments plus dynamiques, comme l’activité humaine. Les contributeurs de ce volume ont exploré la manière dont les premiers ont été intégrés au sein des innombrables réseaux formés par les hommes dans la région, et dont ceux-ci ont été affectés par les contraintes spatiales au cours de l’histoire. Ce volume offre un riche éventail de contributions. Les premières sont consacrées aux sources européennes médiévales et modernes relatives à la mer Rouge et à son exploration, ainsi qu’aux phénomènes de diffusion des connaissances sur la région. Elles sont suivies d’études sur les nœuds principaux que sont les ports et les îles de la mer Rouge. Plusieurs contributions sont ensuite dédiées à l’agency des populations de l’arrière-pays dans les réseaux, de même qu’aux relations entre les régions bordant la mer Rouge et les pouvoirs centraux qui les ont régis, souvent depuis des contrées éloignées. Les réseaux de production et de consommation font l’objet des textes suivants. Ils évaluent l’ampleur et la nature des échanges et mettent en lumière l’archéologie des circulations. La logistique de l’exploration, de l’exploitation et du commerce dans les zones bordant la mer Rouge est ensuite examinée. La dernière série d’articles porte sur des régions où les travaux archéologiques ont commencé très récemment : Somaliland, Tigré et Corne de l’Afrique. Grâce à tous les participants, qu’ils aient exploité de nouvelles données ou réexaminé des documents connus de longue date, la 9e édition du « Red Sea Project » a donné lieu à des débats animés, témoignant que l’Erythra Thalassa demeure une source d’information inépuisable.

The coastal and inland regions of the northern Horn of Africa have been involved for millennia in a process of continuous interaction that played a big role in the shaping of the economic, social and cultural traits of these areas through time. Such interactions developed alongside the establishment of a complex network of short- to long-distance circuits nested one into the other to form major axes with the ultimate scope of overcoming the separateness of this territory. This network did not remain consistently the same. It reorganized itself over time according to the changes in the climatic, economic and political scenario and to the shifting of major hubs and nodes. The paper aims at expanding the existing knowledge of a north-east/south-west exchange axis going from the Red Sea coast to Aksum and beyond in a chronological and spatial manner, in light of recently acquired archaeological evidence. Les régions côtières et intérieures du nord de la Corne de l’Afrique sont impliquées depuis des millénaires dans un processus d’interaction continue qui a joué un grand rôle dans la formation des caractéristiques économiques, sociales et culturelles de ces régions au fil du temps. Ces interactions se sont développées parallèlement à la mise en place d’un réseau complexe de circuits de courte à longue distance imbriqués les uns dans les autres, formant des axes majeurs ayant pour principal objectif de surmonter la fragmentation de ce territoire. Ce réseau n’est pas resté constamment le même. Il s’est réorganisé au fil du temps en fonction de l’évolution des scénarios climatique, économique et politique et du déplacement des grands pôles et nœuds urbains. L’article vise à élargir les connaissances existantes sur l’axe d’échange nord-est/sud-ouest allant de la côte de la mer Rouge à Axoum et au-delà, de manière chronologique et spatiale, à la lumière des données archéologiques récemment acquises.

La conquête de l’Égypte par les Fatimides au début des années 970 leur donna un accès direct à la mer Rouge et leur permit de faire de l’Égypte un carrefour commercial entre l’Orient et l’Occident. Au milieu du xie siècle, le trafic maritime entre l’Égypte et la péninsule Arabique qui passait jusqu’alors par Qulzum près du Caire fut abandonné au profit de ports tels ‘Aydhāb, Sawākin et Bāḍi‘ situés soit en Haute-Égypte voire bien plus au sud sur le territoire relevant théoriquement de la Nubie. La distance, mais également les tribus locales, notamment les Beja, dont le territoire recouvrait les ports en question, rendaient la gestion de ces espaces portuaires difficile pour les maîtres du Caire. Ces derniers durent ainsi s’adapter au contexte local, celui d’un espace de la liminalité, une zone à cheval entre deux souverainetés, mais sur laquelle aucune des deux ne s’exerçait complètement. The Fatimids’ conquest of Egypt in the early 970s gave them direct access to the Red Sea and enabled them to make Egypt a trade crossroads between East and West. In the middle of the eleventh century, the maritime traffic between Egypt and the Arabian Peninsula which, until then, passed through Qulzum near Cairo, was abandoned and redirected to ports such ‘Aydhāb, Sawākin and Bāḍi‘ located either in Upper Egypt or the southern shores of the Red Sea, in the territory theoretically falling under the sovereignty of Nubia. The distance, but also the local tribes, in particular the Beja, whose territory covered the three ports in question, made the management of these ports quite difficult for the masters of Cairo. They had to adapt to the local context, that of a space of liminality, an area straddling two sovereignties but on which neither of them fully exercised.

The last 25 years of archaeological excavations at Berenike Trogodytika have revealed the remains of the only scientifically researched Red Sea port/base from the Hellenistic period. These works made it possible to study the size of the base and its location in the local environment, the construction of the buildings, the methods of supplying the city and the types of goods sent there. It was even possible to reconstruct such elements of everyday life as diet and ways of preparing meals. Research also led to the conclusion that during the location and construction of the port/base, Hellenistic builders took into account not only geographic, logistic and economic factors, but even geological and climatic ones (such as the strength and directions of prevailing winds). Their choices were so accurate that the entire network of precisely operating port centers existed over many centuries and survived all the drastic political and climatic changes. Developed by successive rulers, it connected the ancient Empires of the three continents with one of the most important trade and communication routes in human history. Les vingt-cinq dernières années de fouilles à Berenike Trogodytika ont révélé les restes du seul port hellénistique de la mer Rouge qui ait fait l’objet d’une fouille scientifique. Ces travaux ont permis d’étudier les dimensions de ce port, son insertion dans l’environnement local, la construction des bâtiments, les moyens d’approvisionnement de la ville et les différents types de marchandises expédiées. Il a même été possible de reconstituer des éléments de la vie quotidienne, comme les habitudes alimentaires et la préparation des repas des habitants. Nos travaux ont aussi conduit à la conclusion que les bâtisseurs de l’époque hellénistique avaient pris en compte non seulement les facteurs géographiques, logistiques et économiques, mais aussi géologiques et climatiques (telles la force et les directions des vents dominants). Leurs choix furent si adaptés que le port a continué d’être occupé durant de nombreux siècles et a survécu aux changements politiques et climatiques. Développé par des pouvoirs successifs, il permettait de connecter les anciens empires de trois continents à l’une des plus importantes voies de communication et d’échange de l’histoire de l’humanité.

The coast of Somaliland was the scenario of intense interactions between merchants and local pastoralists in Antiquity, as part of the Indian Ocean trade pattern. The site of Heis (Xiis in Somali) is a large necropolis, consisting of hundreds of cairns, on the coast of eastern Somaliland. It is known since the late 19th century for its remarkable evidence of trade with the Roman Empire, but it has not been the object of systematic research until 2017. In this chapter, we present new data from surveys and excavations conducted during two field seasons, focusing on imported materials (pottery and glass), mainly from the Roman and Parthian empires and South Arabia, between the 1st and 3rd centuries AD. Imported materials represent 99% of all artefacts documented in survey and excavation. This research is part of an ongoing project on long-distance trade in Somaliland. La côte du Somaliland fut le lieu d’interactions intenses entre les marchands et les pasteurs locaux durant l’Antiquité, dans le cadre du développement du commerce dans l’océan Indien. Le site de Heis (Xiis en somali) abrite une vaste nécropole, constituée de centaines de cairns, sur la côte du Somaliland oriental. Il est connu depuis la fin du xixe siècle pour ses vestiges remarquables qui matérialisent l’intensité des échanges avec l’Empire romain. Mais il n’avait pas fait l’objet de recherches systématiques avant 2017. Dans cet article, nous présentons des données nouvelles provenant de prospections et de fouilles menées pendant deux saisons de terrain, en nous concentrant sur le matériel importé (céramique et verre), en provenance notamment des empires romain et parthe et d’Arabie du Sud, et daté du ier et du iiie siècles ap. J.‑C. Les importations représentent 99 % de tous les objets documentés lors des prospections et des fouilles. Cette recherche s’inscrit dans le cadre d’un projet en cours sur le commerce à longue distance au Somaliland.

Intended to provide accurate knowledge of the Red Sea at the dawn of the 16th century, the Letters of Afonso de Albuquerque (1452‑1515), appointed first governor of the “Estado da Índia” (1509‑1515) do not deal exclusively with the commercial and geopolitical dynamics of the region. In spite of the significance of these issues, they also contain valuable geographical descriptions of the insular world and the shores of the Red Sea (“Mar Roxo”), explored in 1513 by Albuquerque in his attempt to conquer Aden. This article examines the most significant information about this area – coastal morphologies, ports, anchorages –, navigation practices and political geography, reported in the wake of the 1513 campaign, which, as it should be recalled, intended to gather strategic information to block the entrance of the Red Sea, which was largely dominated by the Mamluk sultanate, the fierce enemy of the Portuguese, at the beginning of the 16th century. Véritable somme des connaissances sur la mer Rouge à l’aube du xvie siècle, les Lettres d’Afonso de Albuquerque (1452‑1515), premier gouverneur de l’« Estado da Índia » (1509‑1515), ne traitent pas seulement des dynamiques commerciales et géopolitiques de la région. Elles comportent également de précieuses descriptions géographiques du monde insulaire et des rives du « Mar Roxo », explorées par l’escadre d’Albuquerque lors de sa tentative de s’emparer d’Aden en 1513. Le présent article se proposera d’examiner les informations les plus significatives sur ces espaces – la morphologie des côtes, les ports, les mouillages –, les pratiques de navigation et les aspects de géographie politique, reportés dans la foulée de la campagne de 1513, qui, il faut le rappeler, visait à recueillir des informations stratégiques en vue de bloquer l’entrée de la mer Rouge, largement dominée par le sultanat mamelouk, adversaire principal des Portugais au début du xvie siècle.

In 1820 two young Prussian naturalists secured funds to travel to Egypt and the Levant and collect samples for Berlin’s budding zoological collections. Three years later, Wilhelm Friedrich Hemprich and Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg extended their research to the Red Sea, eventually reaching as far as the coast of Abyssinia, present-day Eritrea. Their journeys were marked by tragedy, yet their efforts led to early publications of Red Sea natural history that have been influential even if little known outside of scientific circles. More importantly, their drawings and observations offer a fascinating window onto routes and natural conditions on both coasts of the Red Sea and its islands and onto the networks of knowledge – crucially involving local interlocutors – from which modern scientific descriptions of that natural world developed. This study highlights published and unpublished materials from the Hemprich‑Ehrenberg expedition in the Red Sea and argues that its Nachlass constitutes an informative time capsule of scientific travel networks in the region as well as a palimpsest of local knowledge, particularly regarding maritime topography and marine and insular life. En 1820, deux jeunes naturalistes prussiens levèrent des fonds pour voyager en Égypte et au Levant et collectèrent des échantillons pour les collections zoologiques naissantes de Berlin. Trois ans plus tard, Wilhelm Friedrich Hemprich et Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg étendirent leurs recherches à la mer Rouge, jusqu’à la côte d’Abyssinie, actuelle Érythrée. Leurs voyages furent marqués par la tragédie ; néanmoins leurs efforts permirent la publication rapide de l’histoire naturelle de la mer Rouge, une œuvre décisive même si elle est restée peu connue hors des milieux scientifiques. Leurs dessins et observations représentent surtout une fenêtre fascinante sur les routes entre les deux côtes de la mer Rouge et ses îles, sur leur environnement, ainsi que sur les réseaux de connaissances – grâce notamment à l’implication cruciale d’interlocuteurs locaux – à partir desquels les descriptions modernes de ces milieux naturels ont été réalisées. Cette étude met en lumière la documentation autant inédite que publiée provenant de l’expédition Hemprich‑Ehrenberg en mer Rouge et démontre que son Nachlass constitue un témoin majeur sur les réseaux de voyages scientifiques qui se sont développés dans la région à l’époque moderne, de même qu’un palimpseste de savoir local, en particulier à propos de la topographie maritime et de la vie marine et insulaire.

This paper focuses on historical, ethnographic and archaeological evidence for the links between the Sudanese port of Suakin and South Asia, as part of the Red Sea/Indian Ocean trade, during the overall period later 13th to early 20th century AD. The main locations on Suakin island town yielding relevant material are briefly described. The archaeological evidence indicates pottery comparable with examples of glazed and unglazed burnished wares from India. Consideration is given to the means of trade, particularly the relation between pilgrimage and trade. Interviews indicate the origins of the community of Indian traders at Suakin, in the later 19th century/early 20th century, and show the range of items traded, many of which are invisible archaeologically under the preservation conditions at the site. Continuities in the sea trade until the present day are noted. It is concluded that a combination of archaeological, historical and ethnographic evidence enables hypotheses as to the main routes and methods of trade to be put forward. Cet article présente les témoignages historiques, ethnographiques et archéologiques attestant les liens entre le port soudanais de Suakin et l’Asie du Sud, dans le cadre du commerce entre la mer Rouge et l’océan Indien, pour la période allant de la fin du xiiie au début du xxe siècle ap. J.‑C. Les principaux secteurs de la ville insulaire de Suakin ayant fourni des informations pertinentes sont brièvement décrits. Les traces archéologiques comprennent de la céramique comparable à des productions glaçurées et non glaçurées provenant d’Inde. Une attention particulière est accordée aux modalités du commerce, notamment à la relation entre pèlerinage et commerce. Les entretiens révèlent les origines indiennes de la communauté de commerçants à Suakin vers la fin du xixe siècle et le début du xxe siècle, ainsi que la diversité des objets échangés, dont beaucoup sont périssables et archéologiquement invisibles dans les conditions de préservation du site. On note la continuité du commerce maritime jusqu’à nos jours. En conclusion, la combinaison des témoignages archéologiques, historiques et ethnographiques permet d’avancer des hypothèses quant aux principales routes et aux modalités du commerce.

During the medieval period and well into the 16th century, western Somaliland was part of a series of Muslim kingdoms which thrived thanks to the trade routes that connected the Red Sea with the interior of the Horn of Africa. Since 2015, the Spanish National Research Council (Incipit‑CSIC) has conducted an archaeological project to study the international trade in Somaliland and its impact in the local communities which inhabited the territory. This research is unravelling a complex world of coastal contact points, trade routes and urban sites which structured a sophisticated framework for trade. This paper presents an overview of this trade from the 13th to the 16th centuries, when foreign traders, nomad communities and urban dwellers collaborated to establish a network of exchanges and interactions which spread throughout the Horn of Africa. It will also address to some specificities of the Somali model, such as the lack of coastal trading towns, or the collaborative attitude between nomads and urban dwellers. Pendant la période médiévale et jusqu’au xvie siècle, le Somaliland occidental a fait partie d’une série de royaumes musulmans qui ont prospéré grâce aux routes commerciales qui reliaient la mer Rouge à l’intérieur de la Corne de l’Afrique. Depuis 2015, le Conseil national espagnol de la recherche (Incipit‑CSIC) a mené un projet archéologique pour étudier le commerce international du Somaliland et son impact sur les communautés locales qui vivaient sur ce territoire. Ces travaux permettent de découvrir un monde complexe de points de contact côtiers, de routes commerciales et de sites urbains qui ont structuré un cadre sophistiqué pour le commerce. Cet article présente un aperçu de ce commerce du xiiie au xvie siècle, alors que les commerçants étrangers, les communautés nomades et les habitants des villes ont collaboré pour établir un réseau d’échanges et d’interactions qui s’est étendu à toute la Corne de l’Afrique. Il aborde également certaines spécificités du modèle somalien, telles que l’absence de villes marchandes côtières ou l’attitude de collaboration entre les nomades et les citadins.

Exploited more intensively than before from the Early Islamic period, soft-stone vessels were widely distributed throughout the Arab and Muslim world. The majority of the manufactured goods are cooking pots, followed by lamps and perfume burners. Starting from the soft-stone deposits, geologically known and located both in the Arabian Peninsula and in the Egyptian Eastern Desert, this article focuses on the distribution networks of the vessels on both sides of the Red Sea, from Egypt to the Arab/Persian Gulf, from about the 8th to 13th centuries. It will examine the logistical issues and methods of transporting these objects, from mountain quarries to the river or the sea, as well as the merchants involved in their trade. Exploités plus intensivement qu’auparavant dès le début de la période islamique, les récipients en pierre tendre ont été largement diffusés dans le monde arabe et musulman. La majorité des produits manufacturés sont des pots de cuisson, suivies des lampes et des brûle-parfums. En partant des gisements, géologiquement connus et situés à la fois dans la péninsule Arabique et dans le désert Oriental égyptien, cet article se concentre sur les réseaux de distribution de la vaisselle de pierre tendre des deux côtés de la mer Rouge, de l’Égypte au golfe Arabo-Persique, du viiie au xiiie siècles environ. Il examine les questions logistiques et les méthodes de transport de ces objets, des carrières de montagne au fleuve ou à la mer, ainsi que les marchands impliqués dans leur commerce.

Since the last great period of aridification of the Sahara about 5,000 years ago, crossing or inhabiting the North African desert regions has meant being able to locate, maintain and protect watering points that are essential nodes in the exchange networks. These challenges are particularly important in the Eastern Desert of Egypt, which separates the Nile Valley from the Red Sea, because there are no perennial oases, nomadic populations have long escaped the control of successive states, and routes are constrained by topography. The region has nevertheless maintained a strategic importance, at least since the predynastic period and up to the present day, for its natural resources (particularly mineral and mining resources and, to a lesser extent, vegetation) and for its essential place in travel and trade networks (Red Sea ports and access to the African coast and the Indian Ocean, pilgrimages to Mecca). Since the voyage of James Bruce in 1769, many European and North American travelers and explorers have traversed the Eastern Desert of Egypt and produced accounts and maps, the critical analysis and cross-checking of which make it possible to better assess the ways in which water was managed from the 18th to the 20th centuries. They thus allow us to document very precisely the period before the introduction of motorized vehicles and hydraulic pumping and to establish comparison points with earlier periods and with current networks. When combined with archaeological and ancient textual data in a regressive approach, these elements open up new perspectives for the diachronic study of the Eastern Desert watering points. Depuis la dernière grande période d’aridification du Sahara il y a environ 5 000 ans, traverser ou habiter les régions désertiques d’Afrique du Nord signifie pouvoir localiser, entretenir et protéger les points d’eau qui sont autant de nœuds essentiels dans les réseaux d’échange. Cette maîtrise est particulièrement importante dans le désert Oriental d’Égypte, entre la vallée du Nil et la mer Rouge, car la région ne comporte aucune oasis pérenne, les populations nomades y ont longtemps échappé au contrôle des États successifs et les routes qui la traversent sont contraintes par la topographie. La région a néanmoins occupé une importance stratégique, au moins depuis la période prédynastique et jusqu’à nos jours, en raison de la présence de ressources naturelles (notamment minérales et minières et, dans une moindre mesure, végétales) et pour sa place essentielle dans les réseaux de voyage et de commerce (les ports de la mer Rouge donnent accès à la côte africaine et à l’océan Indien, et sont essentiels pour les pèlerinages à La Mecque). Depuis le voyage de James Bruce en 1769, de nombreux voyageurs et explorateurs européens et nord-américains ont traversé le désert Oriental et ont produit des récits et des cartes dont l’analyse critique et le recoupement permettent de mieux apprécier les modes de gestion de l’eau du xviiie au xxe siècle. Ils permettent de documenter très précisément la période précédant l’introduction dans la région des véhicules motorisés et du pompage hydraulique et d’établir des points de comparaison entre les périodes antiques et les réseaux actuels. Associés à l’analyse de données archéologiques et textuelles antiques dans une approche régressive, ces éléments ouvrent de nouvelles perspectives pour l’étude diachronique des points d’eau du désert Oriental.

The excavation between 2013‑2018 of the Ptolemaic fortifications at ‘Abbad and Bi’r Samut in Egypt’s Eastern Desert has yielded a wealth of new information about the networks of supply that supported Ptolemaic exploitation of the region’s resources during the third century BCE. The ceramic assemblages from the two installations reveal a diverse array of sources for the pottery supplied to the fort, which in turn suggests a wide-ranging web of economic and social connections between the fort’s inhabitants and the Egyptian countryside, as well as the Aegean. Notable among this data is the presence of a very large number of amphoras, used both as vessels for the storage and transport of water, and, in reuse, as funnels, ovens, piping and repositories for commodities stored in the forts. The amphora assemblage from both installations contains a limited range of imported Aegean amphora as well as many locally produced Egyptian amphoras in a variety of forms. Some of these local products precisely imitate contemporary and older Aegean types, while others present a distinctive local form that develops in the third century BCE. This repertoire demonstrates a mélange of attributes borrowed from imported types, but combined with new elements to produce an amphora that is neither imitative, nor entirely free from the influence of Aegean models. This process of consuming, imitating and transforming the amphora, as a transport and multi-use container, reveals the networks of economic connections that supported these desert outposts in the third century BCE. Les fouilles menées entre 2013 et 2018 dans les fortins ptolémaïques d’‘Abbad et de Bi’r Samut, dans le désert Oriental égyptien, ont livré une multitude de nouvelles informations sur les réseaux d’approvisionnement qui ont permis et favorisé l’exploitation ptolémaïque des ressources de la région au iiie siècle av. J.‑C. Les assemblages céramiques des deux forts révèlent une grande diversité d’origine pour les vases fournis au fort, qui suggère à son tour un vaste réseau de liens économiques et sociaux entre les habitants du fort et le reste de l’Égypte, ainsi que la mer Égée. Parmi ces données, il faut noter la présence d’un très grand nombre d’amphores, utilisées à la fois comme récipients pour le stockage et le transport de l’eau, et en réutilisation, comme entonnoirs, fours, tuyaux et silos pour les marchandises stockées dans les forts. L’assemblage d’amphores des deux installations contient une gamme limitée d’amphores égéennes importées ainsi que de nombreuses amphores égyptiennes produites localement, sous diverses formes. Certaines de ces productions locales imitent des types égéens contemporains ou plus anciens, tandis que d’autres présentent une forme locale distinctive qui se développe au iiie siècle av. J.‑C. Ce répertoire présente un mélange d’attributs empruntés à des types importés, mais combinés à de nouveaux éléments pour produire une amphore qui n’est ni une imitation ni entièrement exempte de l’influence des modèles égéens. Ce processus de consommation, d’imitation et de transformation des amphores, en tant que conteneurs de transport et à usages multiples, révèle les réseaux de connexions économiques qui soutenaient ces avant-postes du désert au iiie siècle av. J.‑C.

The city and port of al‑Qulzum, currently located in the modern city of Suez, was a major offloading trade point between the Mediterranean, Egypt and the Red Sea. The site is well known from papyrological documentation, but has only been excavated twice: first by the French archaeologist B. Bruyère between 1930 and 1932 – Fouilles de Clysma‑Qolzoum (Suez) 1930‑1932, FIFAO 27, 1966 –, then by a mission of the Supreme Council of Antiquities between 1960 and 1962, the later excavations remaining unpublished. The study of the register book listing the objects found between 1960 and 1962, combined with the analysis of the material retrieved by Bruyère, allows the reassessment of the chronology and functions of the site. Al‑Qulzum was undoubtedly a commercial and economic hub, at least from the Late Period to the first centuries of Islam. Its implication in Indian trade will be compared to the local and regional networks. La cité portuaire d’al‑Qulzum, actuellement située dans la ville de Suez, était une plaque tournante majeure du commerce entre la Méditerranée, l’Égypte et la mer Rouge. Bien appréhendé grâce à la documentation papyrologique, le site n’a cependant été fouillé qu’à deux reprises : une première fois entre 1930 et 1932 par l’archéologue français B. Bruyère – Fouilles de Clysma-Qolzoum (Suez) 1930-1932, FIFAO 27, 1966 –, et une seconde fois entre 1960 et 1962 par une mission du Conseil suprême des Antiquités, dont les fouilles n’ont pas été publiées. L’étude du registre contenant la liste des objets mis au jour entre 1960 et 1962, associée à l’analyse du matériel découvert par Bruyère, permet de réévaluer la chronologie et les fonctions du site. Al‑Qulzum fut indubitablement un carrefour commercial et économique, au moins de la Basse Époque aux premiers siècles de l’islam. Pour le démontrer, son implication dans le commerce avec l’Inde sera comparé avec sa place dans les réseaux locaux et régionaux.

Port cities act as intermediaries between regional and global trade and commerce, and serve as channels to the international arena. They are intrinsically interconnected with their hinterlands and both have a complex relationship with each other. Sudanese port cities rely on their immediate hinterlands as well as on interior territories. In the past, they were studied in isolation, without investigating the fundamental contribution of interior territories to the permanency and success of port cities. Additionally, continuity or discontinuity of Red Sea ports was influenced by political stability both at a micropolitical and macropolitical level. This research aims to place Suakin in its local, national and global context and explore its port from the 16th to 20th centuries. This study is based on ethnographic interviews, archaeological, historical and archival data. The research emphasises that Sudanese port cities, hinterlands and the country’s interior were linked in multifaceted and overlapping networks of associations and joint purposes. Les ports servent d’interface entre le commerce régional et mondial et permettent l’accès au marché international. Ils sont intrinsèquement liés à leur arrière-pays et entretiennent avec lui des relations complexes. Les villes portuaires soudanaises dépendaient de leur arrière-pays immédiat, mais aussi du territoire intérieur. Dans le passé, elles ont été étudiées isolément, sans examiner le rôle fondamental joué par l’intérieur des terres dans leur pérennité et leur prospérité. Ces deux aspects étaient également influencés par la stabilité politique, tant au niveau micropolitique que macropolitique. Cette recherche vise à replacer Suakin dans son contexte local, national et mondial et à explorer son port du xvie au xxe siècles. Cette étude est basée sur des entretiens ethnographiques, des données archéologiques, historiques et archivistiques. Elle démontre que les villes portuaires, l’arrière-pays et l’intérieur du Soudan étaient liés par des réseaux d’associations et de buts communs interconnectés et aux multiples facettes.

Les études étaient jusqu’à présent lacunaires à propos des lieux de production de la céramique sur la péninsule Arabique et des outils de production de celle-ci. De nouvelles opportunités de recherche se sont cependant ouvertes dans la région depuis quelques années, facilitant l’accès à des sites abritant des ateliers de potier. Des ateliers ont ainsi été fouillés dans la ville caravanière de Thāj (du ive siècle av. J.‑C. au ive siècle ap. J.‑C.) proche des côtes du golfe Arabo-Persique, dans la ville d’al‑Yamāma de l’oasis d’al‑Kharj (ixe‑xe siècles ap. J.‑C.) au centre de l’Arabie Saoudite ou sur le site portuaire de Qalhāt (xiiie‑xive siècles ap. J.‑C.) dans le sultanat d’Oman. De plus, d’autres zones de production ont été identifiées au Yémen, à Bahreïn, et aux Émirats arabes unis. Il s’agit donc de faire un premier état des lieux des zones de production sur la péninsule et des technologies de production qui y sont utilisées. Until now, studies have been incomplete about the places where ceramics are produced on the Arabian Peninsula and the tools used to produce them. However, new research opportunities have opened up in the region in recent years, facilitating access to sites housing pottery workshops. Workshops have been excavated in the caravan city of Thāj (4th century BC to 4th century AD) near the coast of the Persian Gulf, in the city of al‑Yamāma in the oasis of al‑Kharj (9th‑10th centuries AD) in central Saudi Arabia, or in the port site of Qalhāt (13th‑14th centuries AD) in the Sultanate of Oman. In addition, other production areas have been identified in Yemen, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates. It is therefore necessary to make an initial inventory of the production areas on the Peninsula and the production technologies used there.

This paper examines the potential dangers of two waterways connected to the western Indian Ocean – namely, the Red Sea and the Gulf of Khambhat (or Cambay) – together with some of the measures taken to reduce them in the first three centuries of the Common Era. The dangers on these waterways range from piracy to sudden shoals. This paper evaluates two forms of human responses to these dangers in particular: namely, “top-down” strategies implemented by ancient states and “bottom-up” tactics employed by maritime merchants. States invested in coastal infrastructure and deployed armed personnel in order to protect those conducting maritime commerce, monitor their activities, and, most importantly, collect high tariffs on Indian Ocean goods. Merchants on the high seas had a number of tactics of their own to avoid natural hazards and combat piracy, including various forms of information sharing and contracting hired muscle. Ships inevitably went down in the course of ancient Indian Ocean commerce, but human agents had their ways of minimizing risk and making maritime commerce as safe and expedient as possible. Dans cet article on s’intéressera aux dangers potentiels de deux passages maritimes reliés à l’océan Indien occidental, à savoir la mer Rouge et le golfe de Khambhat (ou de Cambay), ainsi qu’à certaines dispositions adoptées pour les réduire au cours des trois premiers siècles de notre ère. Les dangers que présentaient ces lieux vont de la piraterie aux hauts-fonds imprévus. On examinera en particulier deux formes de réponses au danger : les dispositions « top-down » mises en œuvre par les États anciens, et les dispositions « bottom-up » utilisées par les marchands. Les États ont pris en charge des infrastructures côtières et ont déployé des hommes armés pour protéger ceux qui pratiquaient le commerce maritime, surveiller leurs activités et, par-dessus tout, prélever de lourdes taxes sur les marchandises de l’océan Indien. Les marchands au long cours avaient divers moyens qui leur étaient propres pour éviter les risques naturels et lutter contre les pirates, allant du partage de l’information à l’emploi de gardes. Les pertes de navires étaient inévitables, mais les hommes avaient des moyens de réduire au maximum les risques et de rendre le commerce maritime aussi sûr que possible.

Situées dans le proche désert Oriental égyptien, les carrières de Hatnoub sont restées célèbres, dès l’époque pharaonique, pour la qualité de leur albâtre calcite et, depuis leur découverte à la fin du xixe siècle, pour leur richesse épigraphique. Les travaux conduits dans la carrière P et ses alentours, depuis 2012, par la mission épigraphique et archéologique de Hatnoub (Ifao, Université de Liverpool), ont permis de mieux comprendre le fonctionnement de cette carrière et notamment la manière dont on en extrayait les blocs. Des études préliminaires ont également expliqué comment cette carrière (et les autres) s’insérait sur le plateau de Hatnoub, à travers un vaste réseau de voies et d’installations essentiellement tournées vers la production et l’acheminement de l’albâtre ainsi que la gestion administrative et logistique des carrières. Located at the fringes of the Egyptian Eastern Desert, the quarries of Hatnub have remained famous, since the Pharaonic period, for the quality of their calcite alabaster and, since their discovery at the end of the 19th century, for their epigraphic richness. The work carried out in quarry P and its surroundings, since 2012, by the epigraphic and archaeological mission of Hatnub (Ifao, University of Liverpool), has allowed a better understanding of the functioning of this quarry and in particular the way in which the blocks were extracted from it. Preliminary studies were also carried out to understand how this quarry (and the others) was inserted on the Hatnub plateau, through a vast network of roads and installations essentially oriented towards the production and transport of alabaster and the administrative and logistical management of the quarries.

Several estimates have been made of the revenue derived by the Roman state from taxing the goods flowing through its Red Sea ports as part of wider Indian Ocean networks of exchange. The present paper assesses these models and gives greater emphasis to the limitations of the evidence, particularly the typicality of the Hermapollon’s cargo and the wider issue of fluctuations in trading activity (year to year and in the longue durée). It is suggested that previous revenue estimates of 200‑270 million sestertii are probably too high. Plusieurs estimations ont été faites sur les revenus tirés par l’État romain de la taxation des marchandises qui transitaient par ses ports de la mer Rouge dans le cadre plus large des réseaux d’échange de l’océan Indien. Le présent article vise à évaluer ces modèles et à mettre davantage l’accent sur les limites des sources, en pointant en particulier le caractère typique de la cargaison de l’Hermapollon et la question plus large des fluctuations de l’activité commerciale (d’une année à l’autre et sur la longue durée). Il y est suggéré que les précédentes estimations de recettes de 200 à 270 millions de sesterces sont probablement trop élevées.

Since the beginning of the Pharaonic period, Egyptian kings sent expeditions to the Eastern Desert in order to exploit the minerals and to reach the Red Sea. These expeditions are known from inscriptions and archaeological sites that constitute a network in the desert. The nodes of this geographical network are the towns in the Nile Valley, the extraction sites in the middle of the desert, the wells, and the harbors of the Red Sea. To travel between all these nodes during the 3rd and 2nd millennia BC, men with their donkeys followed the wadis which were the edges of this network. During their journey, ancient Egyptians could sometimes rely on nomads for assistance as they knew the landscape by heart, unlike the Valley people, venturing into a hostile land. Dès le début de l’époque pharaonique, les rois égyptiens ont envoyé des expéditions dans le désert Oriental afin d’en exploiter les minéraux et pour atteindre les rives de la mer Rouge. Ces expéditions sont connues grâce à des inscriptions et à un réseau de sites archéologiques. Les nœuds de ce réseau géographique sont les villes de la vallée du Nil, les sites d’extraction situés au milieu du désert, les puits, et les ports de la mer Rouge. Pour se déplacer entre ces nœuds au cours des IIIe et IIe millénaires av. J.‑C., les hommes et leurs ânes ont suivi les ouadis qui ont constitué les liens de ce réseau. Au cours de leur voyage, les anciens Égyptiens pouvaient parfois compter sur l’aide des nomades, excellents connaisseurs de la région, contrairement aux habitants de la vallée, qui s'aventuraient dans une région souvent considérée comme hostile.

Les recherches effectuées par la Mission archéologique française dans le Tigray oriental (MAFTOr) combinent fouilles, prospections archéologiques et études environnementales dans deux régions limitrophes caractérisées par des paysages différents : le haut plateau du Tigray oriental, autour du village de Wolwalo, et les montagnes au nord-est, autour du site antique de Wakarida. Ces travaux ont révélé trois épisodes de peuplement dense dans la région de Wakarida, le premier peu hiérarchisé au cours du Ier millénaire av. J.‑C., le second organisé autour du centre urbain de Wakarida entre le ive et le début du viie siècle, le dernier daté entre les xe et xiie siècles, qui témoigne d’un mode de vie nomade. L’agriculture pratiquée durant ces différentes phases de peuplement n’a que peu marqué les paysages environnants, et les fonds de vallée n’ont pas été aménagés en terrasses. Ces épisodes de peuplement sont séparés par des hiatus qui ont conduit la mission à étendre ses investigations sur le haut plateau du Tigray autour de Wolwalo, où un site daté entre les viie et ixe siècles ap. J.‑C. a été découvert et exploré en partie. Les résultats de ces travaux sont exposés et discutés dans cet article. Researches carried out by the French Archaeological Mission in Eastern Tigray (MAFTOr) combine archaeological excavations, surveys and environmental studies in two adjacent regions showing different landscapes: the Tigray plateau around the village of Wolwalo, and the mountains to the north-east, around the Aksumite site of Wakarida. The settlement pattern shows three successive stages in the region of Wakarida, the first is mainly rural during the first millennium BC, the second is organised around the small Aksumite urban centre at Wakarida between the 4th and the 7th century AD, the third, between the 10th and the 12th century AD, suggests a nomadic way of life. The agricultural practices that have been reconstituted during these different periods did not significantly impact the natural landscapes, and no terracing of the valley bottoms appeared. These three episodes are separated by two gaps, which led us to explore the neighbouring Tigray plateau where a site dated between the 7th and 9th centuries AD has been discovered. These results and their implications are discussed in this article.

In 2007, the French archaeological mission of the Eastern Desert found a square Indian coin during the excavations of the praesidium of Dios (Abu Qurayya). Located on the road from Koptos to Berenike, the fort was built in 115/116 AD. The coin is a new type in the series of the “stock coinage” of the Cheras, of South India, usually dated from the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. It is the only Indian coin ever found by the team during more than 25 years of excavations in the praesidia of the Eastern Desert and a rare witness of Erythrean trade in one of these Roman garrisons. If its presence is only anecdotic, its stratigraphic context helps to date the Chera coinage. La monnaie est un nouveau type dans la série du « stock monétaire » des Cheras d’Inde du Sud, communément datés des ier et iie siècles ap. J.‑C. Il s’agit de l’unique monnaie indienne découverte par l’équipe après plus de 25 ans de fouilles dans les praesidia du désert Oriental et d’un rare témoignage du commerce de la « mer Erythrée » dans l’une de ces garnisons romaines. Si sa présence est seulement anecdotique, son contexte stratigraphique permet d’affiner la chronologie du monnayage chera.

The Roman period temple at Ruwāfa in the north-western part of the Arabian Peninsula is known for its isolation in a desert area. A small group of Greek and Nabataean inscriptions was found there. They show that the temple was built during the reign of the emperors Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus and under two successive governors of the provincia Arabia. The temple was not dedicated to the imperial cult, but to the god of the Thamudenians. Its construction demonstrated the loyalty of the dedicator, the Thamudenian ethnos, to the emperors. The word ethnos here refers, quite traditionally, to the “people”, the “community” of the Thamudenians which, like other officialy recognised communities, cities and tribes, was a component of the structure of governance in the province. Ethnos has not the meaning of “irregular troop” or “regiment” that is sometimes attributed to it., Résumé : Le temple d’époque impériale romaine de Ruwāfa au nord-ouest de la péninsule Arabique est connu pour son isolement dans une zone désertique. Les quelques inscriptions en grec et en nabatéen qui y ont été retrouvées indiquent qu’il a été édifié sous le règne des empereurs Marc Aurèle et Lucius Verus et sous deux gouverneurs successifs de la province d’Arabie. Le temple n’était pas consacré au culte impérial, mais au « dieu des Thamoudéniens », et sa construction manifestait la loyauté du dédicant, l’ethnos des Thamoudéniens, envers les empereurs. Ce terme d’ethnos désigne ici, assez traditionnellement, le « peuple », la « communauté » des Thamoudéniens qui, comme d’autres communautés reconnues, cités et tribus, était un élément de l’organisation des pouvoirs dans la province. Il n’a pas la signification de « troupe irrégulière » ou de « régiment » qu’on lui prête parfois.

This contribution examines some aspects of the connections between the two shores of the northern Red Sea, mainly in the area of al‑Wajh, and the parallel which can be drawn between them with regard to the east‑west connections – between the sea and the inland areas – and the north‑south ones. The focus is put on the Arabian side, which is much less known than the Egyptian one, as well as on the results of some recent or ongoing research. Cet article vise à étudier certains aspects des connexions entre les deux rives du nord de la mer Rouge, principalement dans la région d’al‑Wajh, et le parallèle qui peut être établi entre elles en ce qui concerne les connexions est-ouest – entre la mer et l’hinterland – et les connexions nord-sud. Nous nous concentrerons plus spécifiquement sur la rive arabe de la mer Rouge, beaucoup moins connue que la rive égyptienne, ainsi que sur les résultats de certaines recherches récentes ou en cours.

International audience; Our recent research on the settlement of Ikaros in the Arab/Persian Gulf brings a new contribution to the knowledge of the networks to which the island belonged from the Hellenistic period to the Parthian period: Seleucid, regional or “international”. In particular, the study of the fortifications, which confirms the foundation of the fortress by the Seleucids, highlighted the existence of phases of abandonment which show that the island should then be excluded from the Seleucid kingdom. At the same time, the perennial breeding and consumption of pigs, a practice that we believe to have been introduced on the island by the Seleucids, did not stop even during the phases of absence of this political power. The pottery clearly indicates a coexistence of practices linked to both “Greek” and regional influences.; Nos recherches récentes sur l’établissement d’Ikaros dans le golfe Arabo-Persique apportent une nouvelle contribution à la connaissance des réseaux auxquels l’île a appartenu, de la période hellénistique à la période parthe : réseaux séleucide, régional ou « international ». En particulier, l’étude des fortifications, qui confirme la fondation de la forteresse par les Séleucides, a mis en évidence l’existence de phases d’abandon qui montrent que l’île devait alors être exclue du royaume séleucide. Parallèlement, l’élevage et la consommation pérennes de porcs, une pratique que nous pensons avoir été introduite sur l’île par les Séleucides, ne s’est pas interrompue, y compris pendant les phases d’absence de ce pouvoir politique. La céramique quant à elle indique clairement une coexistence de pratiques liées à des influences à la fois « grecque » et régionale.

Caroline Durand, Julie Marchand, Bérangère Redon and Pierre Schneider (ed.)., [EN] During the medieval period and well into the 16th century, western Somaliland was part of a series of Muslim kingdoms which thrived thanks to the trade routes that connected the Red Sea with the interior of the Horn of Africa. Since 2015, the Spanish National Research Council (Incipit‑CSIC) has conducted an archaeological project to study the international trade in Somaliland and its impact in the local communities which inhabited the territory. This research is unravelling a complex world of coastal contact points, trade routes and urban sites which structured a sophisticated framework for trade. This paper presents an overview of this trade from the 13th to the 16th centuries, when foreign traders, nomad communities and urban dwellers collaborated to establish a network of exchanges and interactions which spread throughout the Horn of Africa. It will also address to some specificities of the Somali model, such as the lack of coastal trading towns, or the collaborative attitude between nomads and urban dwellers., [FR] Pendant la période médiévale et jusqu’au xvie siècle, le Somaliland occidental a fait partie d’une série de royaumes musulmans qui ont prospéré grâce aux routes commerciales qui reliaient la mer Rouge à l’intérieur de la Corne de l’Afrique. Depuis 2015, le Conseil national espagnol de la recherche (Incipit‑CSIC) a mené un projet archéologique pour étudier le commerce international du Somaliland et son impact sur les communautés locales qui vivaient sur ce territoire. Ces travaux permettent de découvrir un monde complexe de points de contact côtiers, de routes commerciales et de sites urbains qui ont structuré un cadre sophistiqué pour le commerce. Cet article présente un aperçu de ce commerce du xiiie au xvie siècle, alors que les commerçants étrangers, les communautés nomades et les habitants des villes ont collaboré pour établir un réseau d’échanges et d’interactions qui s’est étendu à toute la Corne de l’Afrique.
