The aim of the article is to observe how countries that have faced armed conflicts in the recent decades are perceived in a corpus of Czech, mostly journalism texts. We focus on eight countries where soldiers of the Czech Republic or the former Czechoslovak Republic have been deployed on the basis of a mandate after 1989 (Afghanistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Iraq, Kosovo, Kuwait, Mali, and Yugoslavia). The picture of each country is determined via a quantitative, corpus-based approach. First, a frequency analysis is conducted in an attempt to show whether texts tend to mention some conflict-affected countries more frequently than others. Second, a collocation analysis is carried out to identify the stereotypes associated with the studied countries. The results show very different perceptions of the states, ranging from those connected solely to warfare (Iraq, Afghanistan) to those that are nowadays mostly seen as holiday destinations (Croatia). Moreover, some countries do not seem to be paid much attention at all (Mali). The outcome of the research may be of use for journalists, political scholars, and geographers and provides the respective disciplines with a new methodological approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study focuses on toponyms and their role in "Silesian Songs" by Petr Bezruč (1867-1958), an important Silesian poet and bard. The authors build on their previous quantitative-linguistic research on Bezruč, which focused on anthroponyms ("Géro versus Ondra. Anthroponyms in Silesian Songs as Seen through the Prism of Keywords and Collocations"), and thus present a comprehensive picture of proper names in this poetry collection. The aim of the study is to use quantitative methods -- frequency and collocation analyses and keyword detection -- in order to clarify the functioning of place names in "Silesian Songs", to classify their interrelationships, and to compare them with the system of Bezruč's anthroponyms. Analyses show that proper names make up 30% of the keywords of "Silesian Songs", they are thus an important feature of the poet's poetics. Anthroponyms and toponyms are equally frequent. The distribution of geographical names corresponds to the Zipf distribution -- Bezruč prefers a narrow range of names, while many others are only used occasionally. Furthermore, most toponyms are oriented towards Silesia, but there are also localities associated with the Habsburg monarchy, Antiquity, and exoticism, which usually serve as building blocks of metaphors. In the context of Silesia, Bezruč places his poems primarily in the Těšín region; the Opava and Hlučín ones are in most cases the settings of his intimately-tuned poems. Other important traits of the collection are the tension between the names of inhabited and natural places and the multifaceted lyrical subject, which links, via collocations, the four most frequent geographical names of the text -- Těšín, Beskydy, Ostravice, and Dombrová. The paper focuses on the frequency and collocation analyses of Česko (“Czechia”), the short, geographical name of our country, in the opinion journalism section of the eight-version SYN corpus, which comprises texts from the period of 1990−2018. Within the scope of the research, the period was divided into several sections, which are delineated by the breakthrough political and cultural events (the Czech Republic entering NATO, the Czech Republic entering the EU, climax of the first season of the Pop Idol-based contest Czechia Is Looking for a SuperStar, etc.). The frequency analysis is based on the relativization via i.p.m.; the collocability force is counted on the grounds of the logDice index, which is easy to be interpreted linguistically, and independent of the corpus size. The goal of the study is to capture basic motivations which led to the popularisation of the name and its expansion in the given discourse (e.g. the influences of other one-word names of states, sport commentaries, popular contests, and generation change). It is possible to sum up that the Česko name is employed in a variety of contexts, and its usage can be seen as unmarked. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper focuses on the analysis of a sample of military language from the stylometric perspective. The corpus is the chronicle of the 8th Czech Armed Forces Guard Company, which operated at the Bagram Air Field base (BAF). We work on the assumptions that in the corpus, there will be (A) a prominent presence of military slang; (B) a high pro portion of abbreviations; (C) frequent linguistic devices ex pressing mutuality and collectiveness of the soldiers' enterprise. The texts were subjected to keyword and collocation analyses; these determined severalstylistic features of theirs (such as use of English-based expressions, pro to col-like language, or idiosyncratic collocations), which testify to the multifaceted character of the military chronicle genre [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
