This study investigated influence of institutional management on collection development in Federal Colleges of Agriculture in Northern Nigeria. The study has 3 objectives which include to: determine the types of collection available in Federal College of Agriculture libraries in Northern Nigeria; find out the influence of institutional management on collection development in Federal College of Agriculture libraries in Northern Nigeria and find out the challenges faced by the library management on collection development in Federal College of Agriculture libraries. In order to achieve the stated objectives 3 research questions were asked. The study used a descriptive research design with a population of 72 management staff of Federal College of Agriculture libraries in Northern Nigeria and the sample size drawn was 36 respondents. Out of the 36 copies of questionnaire administered, 28 copies were returned which represent 78%. Data collected was analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that there is availability of collection in all the libraries under study. It was revealed that the college management has a lot of influence on collection development of the college libraries. Finally, the findings revealed that funds are not sufficiently provided, which affects adequacy of collections, there is also delay in the delivery of Collections among others. Digital collections, institutional repositories, open educational resources, open access publishing, and new forms of digital scholarship are all ways in which academic libraries are growing their collections from the inside out as well as making this content widely available to other libraries and users. This article will explore national and global trends in library-enabled publishing and content creation, focusing on the kinds of collections being published by libraries, the ways that metadata can bring these collections together for improved access, and the role of consortia in the process. The concept of collection is of crucial importance for libraries, museums and archives. Defining some clear criteria for documents belonging to one or another of the collections is closely related to the organization of knowledge included in them and has a direct impact on information access. These criteria are necessary more than ever under the existing conditions of digital collections. To this effect, the collection management becomes meaningful to a major extent. The paper will analyze by means of argumentation and examples, the necessity of separating the collections, will present membership criteria of document sets to particular collections and will approach the problem of customizing access to them. Beginning in July 2002, the Health Sciences Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill underwent an 11 million dollar renovation. During three phases of the renovation, parts of the collection were inaccessible to patrons. In order to continue to make the library's collection available, library staff created a paging system. Patrons submitted requests for needed library materials using paper and electronic forms and library staff retrieved the requested items. Purpose: The purpose of the work is to find out the impact of collection management practices of academic libraries and the challenges of library users when accessing library materials. Design/Methodology: A survey was conducted to ensure that a wider number of library users were involved. The convenience sampling technique was used to select library users and the quantitative data obtained were analysed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22 software. Findings: The main findings were: the electronic and non electronic resources of the two libraries were inadequate; University of Cape Coast Library had a section for the visually impaired, whilst University of Education, Winneba does not; some users of both libraries failed to get involved in the selection process and materials mainly used in the libraries were textbooks. Research Limitations: The work is limited to the outcome of collection building activities performed by library staff on the usage of the information resources of the libraries of two Ghanaian universities built by the Government to train graduate teachers for the country. Practical Implication: Materials in libraries are meant to be used hence collection management practices have a direct link on the patronage of libraries. Social implication: Libraries as agents of education need to be accountable to their stakeholders as public funds are used in their establishment. Purpose - The literature on collection development largely discusses all kinds of managerial and practical issues. There appears to be a noteworthy gap in LIS literature regarding the philosophical and conceptual underpinning of the subject. The paper aims to attempt to explore the developments in the theoretical foundations of collection management practices in libraries. Design/methodology/approach - An extensive review of the available literature was made to synthesise the study. It illustrates the impacts of the developments in civilization, from ancient times to modern, on the collection management services of libraries. Academic libraries acquire and steward numeric datasets as well as large collections of image files, audio archives, digital texts, and other non-numeric resources. This article considers how a sample of libraries in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom present these collections and make them available for discovery. And, importantly, the article examines whether these non-numeric collections are positioned on the library Website as research datasets, rather than as artifacts of limited local and/or historical interest. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to present research findings from a project to identify, locate and examine the first collection of a large academic research institution. The article also examines changes in collections over time and some of the factors influencing changing collection development policies and practice. For this special issue, the editors (Reinhard Altenhöner and Jakob Nadal) spoke with Peter Whitehead, Collection Care Leader at the National Library of New Zealand, and Hinerangi Himiona, archivist and Principal Maori Advisor on the Tahuhu Programme. Those and subsequent earthquakes in New Zealand have resulted in a raft of revisions to building standards, for building resilience for both existing and new buildings. The assessment outcome for the building was excellent, and we are confident the National Library building presents a low risk exposure for staff and our collections. The Tahuhu Programme will see the Alexander Turnbull Library conservation team use co-located purpose-built facilities with the conservation team from Archives New Zealand in the new Archives building. While many academic libraries have followed the public library lead in developing makerspaces, not all libraries have the money or space to dedicate to such large-scale operations. This case study explores a different approach to engaging users with new technology and investigates how to support their creativity without a costly investment in space and staffing. It demonstrates not only how students can be provided a virtual space to explore technology equipment, but also how their opinions can be leveraged for growing the collection and creating training materials. This article focuses on the level of international scientific publication by Kazakhstani researchers, and considers the problem of access to international scientific resources in Kazakhstan, a developing country. Key areas of the discussion are Kazakhstan's strategic plans and policies regarding science, roles of international publishers in science, and the relationship between international publishers and the government of Kazakhstan. The article bears the informative meaning and has no research and findings. Online exhibits can be beneficial tools in promoting collections and drawing in researchers to using a library's collections. At the University of Southern Mississippi Libraries, an online exhibit, Seeing Red: Anti-Communism Efforts in Mississippi, 1944-1968, was created to promote collections on the topic. The idea for the online exhibit came from an in-house exhibit that had the potential of satisfying the research needs of a wider audience. By creating an online exhibit that highlighted the materials relating to anticommunism in Mississippi. exposure to the materials can reach people worldwide rather than being limited to those who visit an in-house exhibit. This can stimulate interest in the topic on exhibit, but can also lead researchers to other collections available in that library. In this article the author discusses shortening reference collections in libraries. Several opportunities and choices are available through trimming collections according to the author. Discussed are how several librarians met the demand for various collections through the reallocation of space at their library. A library reference department's usefulness can be made better through the creation of digital repositories of unique or hard-to-find information. The author also believes that library employees can schedule activities that build connections between the library and the community.

A new historical research library was opened in autumn 2007 on the third floor of the Central Library of the Corvinus University of Budapest. The Library, founded as the library of the University of Economics of Budapest in 1948 had several legal predecessors: the Library of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Budapest (1850), the Library of the Department of Economics of the Hungarian Royal University (1925), and the Library of the Department of Economics of the University of Technical and Economic Sciences (1934). The current re- search library holds and makes available the historical items of the book collections of the above mentioned libraries, and also holds the original furniture and artefacts of these libraries. The most prestigious collection is the Chamber Library, founded in 1850. Between 1900 and 1904, under the direction of Ervin Szabó, the collection was developed into a high quality re- search library well ahead of its time. Its collection was opened to the wide public in 1901. The historical volumes were re- catalogued in 2006 in the framework of the Hungarian National Shared Catalogue project. The online cataloguing made it possible to access the owner stamps, ex libris and possessor labels of the historical books, which is a very important step made in the reconstruction of the history of the library collection. The article offers information on the collection of postcards from Asia and Africa by the Yale University Divinity School Library. The collection of postcards features the missionary work in Asia and Africa, made available by one collector who has scoured flea markets and book stores all over Europe. The collection is more than four thousand postcards, housed in the Yale Divinity Library's Day Missions Collection. The postcards focuses on missionary works, documenting the thought, history, and practice of world Christianity since the emergence of postcard era.

Purpose - Proposes encouraging librarians to be more informed about the value of collection evaluations. Design/methodology/approach - Three examples of collection evaluation methods (user-centered evaluation, physical assessment and specific subject support) are explored. Findings - Many strategies are available for evaluating collections, regardless of the kind of library or size of the collection. Evaluation allows librarians a more thorough knowledge of what already exists, what may be needed, and whether collection development goals are being achieved. Practical implications - Methods of meaningful collection evaluation are shared so that librarians may create an evaluation that will provide useful information to them in their library setting. Implications for successful future collection management, financial resource management and effective format selection are discussed. Originality/value - Discussion that includes the "assessment of specific subject support" and "assessing and building specific subject collections" encourages librarians to recognize their major and minor collections, creatively assess those collection areas, and involve techniques or individuals who might guide them to specific subject materials. The library's experiences, efforts, communication between various channels and difficulties in acquiring Chinese Medicine materials are discussed. An overview and analysis of the Journal Citation Reports' impact factor is provided here. The historical development, calculation of, and alternatives to impact factor are briefly described. Nine general uses of impact factor, including library collection management decisions, journal rankings, journal decision models, and full-text database evaluation, are discussed. Ten benefits, such as its well-established authority, are listed. Finally, more than a dozen criticisms of citation data in general (e.g., self-citations are counted) and impact factor specifically (e.g., problems with the formula for its calculation) are analyzed. The author concludes that impact factor, if used appropriately and in combination with other criteria, is a valid tool that can assist journal collection management decisions in research libraries. Women musicians were virtually ignored in the literature of Western music until their recent inclusion in standard reference sources and other publications. However, making these works available to the researcher becomes a challenge for library collection development departments, especially for small libraries unaffiliated with music schools that have only a modest music collection and budget. This paper offers guidance in developing a small collection of books on women in music that will complement the current collection and provide amore accuratehistory of Western music. The article shares the author's perspectives on the collection management in academic libraries in the U.S. For him, the important element of academic libraries, which is collection, is slowly decreasing and mismanagement is prevalent in academic libraries. Furthermore, the availability of journal collections has been decreasing in libraries, however, such collections are rapidly becoming available in digital forms. In fact, studies and reports from librarians and vendors, show that digital journals are increasingly used each year. He concluded that in an increasingly digital and consortial world, the library as a place must give way to something such as the library as a mission.

Collective collections are multiple local collections described and/or managed as a single collection. Constructing, understanding, and operationalizing collective collections is an increasingly important aspect of collection management for many libraries. This article presents some general insights about collective collections, drawn from a series of studies conducted by OCLC. These insights identify salient characteristics of many collective collections and serve as a starting point for developing collective collection-based strategies for such library priorities as shared print, digitization, and group-scale discovery and fulfillment. Over the years, libraries have taken numerous approaches to assess their serial subscriptions. When the Texas A&M University Libraries made the strategic decision to introduce a sustainable, iterative approach to reviewing serials they employed a new tool to the task, 1Science's 1Figr product, which includes reports that combine traditionally used usage and citation analysis data together with new open access metrics. This case study examines the reports and how they were employed in the review to help the Libraries' make substantive collection decisions. This article should help libraries get a better understanding of what 1Figr is and how it can be used so that libraries can make an informed decision as to whether the product would be a worthwhile investment for them. Prior to 1997, the University of Oxford in Great Britain had approximately one hundred autonomous libraries with little coordination of services, collection development, or management among them. In that year a new director was hired with the mandate to integrate many of these libraries into one centralized system. Over the past seven years Oxford's libraries have been reorganized; the restructuring has consolidated a number of previously independent libraries and changed the way library service is provided at Oxford. This longitudinal case study is based on visits to the libraries, interviews with participants, and examination of relevant print and electronic resources. Patrons and scholars are increasingly likely to first encounter a collection in a digital space rather than a physical one. This article considers how to utilize data visualization in an academic library to promote a unique collection to remote visitors. In order to create awareness of the Valente Italian Library at Seton Hall University, one of the largest Italian collections in the United States, subject librarians considered ways to convey and describe the collection beyond the search box or the discovery filters of the catalog. After considering meaningful data points available in the records data, the authors harvested, cleaned, and mined the data for interesting collection facets. Visualizations were created from the data and the authors explore whether they offer a greater understanding of the collection and aid in telling its story, as well as recreate a sense of browsing for the online visitor. This article presents a case study from the University of New Mexico which describes the gifts policy, procedures, and workflow. It describes the procedures that were developed for adding gift books to the collection and the ways in which University of New Mexico has been able to use these same procedures to streamline inventory projects of material shelved in the stacks but not findable in the library catalog. By clearly outlining collecting parameters and drawing on the expertise of subject librarians and technical services staff, the University of New Mexico has successfully simplified the workflow for managing all new gift materials to the collection and evaluating existing titles for potential withdrawal. The Maps of Imaginary Places Collection at Cushing Memorial Library and Archives, Texas A&M University (TAMU) is a singular collaborative effort between two library departments at creating a collection that not only appeals to a wide range of patrons but shows how maps, fantasy, and popular culture intersect. In 2017, the Cushing Library mounted a popular exhibit showcasing highlights from this collection in order to bring the emotional and imaginative power of maps to a wider audience. This article describes how both the collection and exhibit were developed, as well as how they have been received by different patron groups, and includes as future directions for the collection. Using Steven Carl Fortriede's method inMoving Your Library: Getting the Collection From Here to Thereas a framework, we successfully moved the New York University Abu Dhabi Library from a library and off-site storage facility to one new library. While we generally followed Fortriede's advice, we deviated from his plan in three important ways: We created a color-coding system for the boxes, which eliminated the need to keep the boxes in strict order; we integrated two collections during the move (rather than before); and we created phantom books to create space for lengthy multivolume sets in the smaller collection. In one of the papers on Google Inc.'s search engine, John Rutledge says that the search engine can be used for the development of a collection of contemporary literature. Another two papers by David Ward and Thomas Teper, present information about two studies conducted at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Illinois, which focus on the management and preservation of print collections in libraries. In another paper, Cherié L. Weible discusses the availability of shelves of a random sample of Ph.D. dissertations in the main stacks of the University of Illinois library. Another paper by Kylie Chan, Wing Woo, and Lisa Song, three librarians from Hong Kong Baptist University, details their experience in developing a traditional Chinese medicine collection at the university.

Libraries are increasingly becoming service points rather than custodians of physical books and journals. At Duke University Medical Center Library & Archives, we came to realize that the space used to house our bound print journals could be used more effectively as student study space. We undertook a comprehensive review of our entire journal collection, both on site and off site. Various criteria, including patterns of usage, overlap, perpetual access, and rarity, were used to determine if we could eliminate or relocate our entire in-house journal collection. Patron-driven acquisition and pay per view continue to receive much attention. There is considerable debate on the development of OA as the pace increases; of particular interest is Schöpfel on the impact of OA on document supply. The role that public library collection development policies play in guiding selectors and informing users has been promoted as a pillar of good professional practice. While these policies purport to open up the methods and the criteria used in selection so as to promote transparency and a sense of professional objectivity, how they actually are developed and put into practice has remained largely implicit in the research literature. This analysis revealed that policies tended to focus on local issues and remained heavily materials focused. Collection managers should analyze and control the quality of digital collections by active weeding of e-books. Certain print weeding strategies apply to digital material even though digital material does not take up physical space. One such strategy is the removal of outdated content, especially in the subjects of health and technology, in order to maintain updated and accurate collections. However, the e-book format presents some additional and different quality control challenges. Citation studies and analyses of usage statistics are two approaches academic librarians take to determine if their journal collections support the needs of research faculty. Librarians at a small, regional liberal arts university compiled a list of faculty journal publications covering a thirteen-year span from four academic departments--nursing, chemistry, biology, and mathematics--and, from these publications, generated a list of the journals that were cited. As expected, this university's faculty members publish in many of the same journals that they cite. However, faculty members cite a wide range of sources. Wiley journal usage statistics were examined from 2011 and 2012 to determine if the number of PDF downloads of articles in the published in and cited Wiley journals were higher than the average numbers of PDF downloads of Wiley journals. Combining an analysis of usage statistics with citation analysis provides a more strategic way to look at a Big Deal package. Abstract Purpose -- The purpose of this study was to examine youth service librarians' use of collaborative collection development (CCD) behaviors and interlibrary loan (ILL) to collaborate with school librarians. Design/methodology -- A quantitative design was implemented with a self-administered survey that was placed online. Findings -- Public youth services librarians in the USA believe it is important to collaborate with school librarians. However, they are not frequently using collaborative resource sharing strategies. Public youth services librarians that have more experience, understand trends and issues in school libraries and feel they have knowledge of collaborative strategies are more likely to engage in collaborative resource sharing. Research limitations -- The study was limited to 265 public librarians serving youth in the USA. This study does not present the perspectives of school libraries. Social implications -- CCD and ILL between public and school libraries are overlooked practices for building relationships between public and school librarians that should be explored. Presenting the benefits of these strategies during training programs may increase the resources that youth can access, thus having an overall impact on the quality of life in communities. Collaborating will also help communities understand the value of libraries as institutions for promoting lifelong learning. Originality/value -- The results provide evidence that public youth service librarians in the USA believe in the importance of collaborative relationships with school librarians. However, they do not frequently use ILL or engage in CCD behaviors with school librarians. Using ILL and CCD are two strategies that may be used to build stronger relationships. For decades, the Health Professions Library at Hunter College served the college's health professions programs, all housed at one campus. In 2011, part of the library's collection moved to follow the public health department to a new location, and in 2015 the entire library will relocate to an interim space before moving on to its final home several years later in a shared building yet to be constructed. These moves, whether accomplished or anticipated, raise collection management issues in several areas: geographic dispersal of programs, structural reorganization of schools and departments, and collaboration with other departments or outside institutions. The collection development and management literature from 2011 and 2012 explores how libraries are making difficult collection choices with decreasing funds, competing needs for space, and a continually developing e-market. Purpose – The purpose of this article is to document the acquisition and processing of an important Native American pictorial archive, the Lee Marmon Pictorial Collection, and to elucidate some of its research and cultural value. Design/methodology/approach – This paper combines research into archival and secondary sources with documentation of professional procedures relating to the acquisition, processing, and digitizing, as well as the content of the Lee Marmon Pictorial Collection. Findings – The paper finds that working directly with the creator of the archive increased its value significantly by both improving the archive's organization and enriching the identifying information accompanying the items. It also shows the broad scope and valuable content of the Lee Marmon Pictorial Collection. Research limitations/implications – The collaborative efforts of the archive's creator and its processors made available to the public an archive that will undoubtedly contribute to scholarship in a number of fields, including Native American Studies, American Studies, and historical and cultural studies of the Southwest. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to discuss the Texas A&M University (TAMU) Libraries' policies that effectively reduced the size of onsite print collections, with minimal impact on the library user community. The paper also aims to examine some of the challenges encountered during the underlying collection assessment process. Design/methodology/approach – Investment in electronic resources, digital preservation initiatives and local print repositories are reasonable solutions for academic libraries that need to responsibly relocate legacy print collections from their open stacks. Findings – Balancing trust issues with local needs and embracing the opportunities offered by digital archives and local print repositories are key elements for successfully implementing collection management decisions. Originality/value – This article examines local best practices for downsizing local print collections and recommends strategies applicable to any large academic library for addressing collection assessment challenges. Purpose – The ideas surrounding which institutional attributes make for good libraries vary radically based on patron review, professional association rankings, size of overall collections, and other measures. The purpose of this article is to provide insight into argumentation for establishing how libraries gain the compliment of "good" in an increasingly digital age. Design/methodology/approach – An analysis of the general effect digital content available on the internet has on the mind of the consumer frames the debate on how libraries can be seen as both relevant and good for their communities despite being expensive. Findings – Library leaders always need to advocate for their services and collections, but it is only through true reflective discourse with key stakeholders and governing bodies that enlightenment on the key advantages of libraries can be found. Originality/value – Library popularity and use rises and falls solely based on the conscious user evaluation of collections and services. Focusing this consciousness away from the myth that all material of worth is digital and available online is the key to helping users and governing bodies understand that investments in library infrastructure, technology and (most importantly) raw collections is what makes libraries good for all. A collection analysis project was carried out on the Russian, Eastern European, and Eurasian studies collection at Miami University Libraries. The collection serves a diverse population of scholars and students. These constituents vary in discipline and in reading level of Russian and other Slavic languages. The goal for collecting for this area is to reflect this diversity of disciplines and languages, as well as to follow the collection development policy. The project thus had two objectives: to determine how well the collection supports users’ needs and how well it reflects the collection development policy. A very simple process for data gathering was used to determine the number of items in each subject, the items’ language, and the number of checkouts and in-house uses. The results showed some discrepancies between the policy and the predominant language of the collection, as well as a lack of use among materials in languages other than English. The existence of a ubiquitous and cheap worldwide communications network that increasingly makes documents easily and freely available will require a transformation of academic library collecting practice. It will be driven by a number of specific developments including: the digitization of content; the development of print repositories; the development of e-readers and print-on-demand publishing; the growth of open access; challenges to establish academic publishing organizations; and the growth of new forms of scholarship based on openness and social productivity. If academic libraries are to be successful, they will need to: deconstruct legacy print collections; move from item-by-item book selection to purchase-on-demand and subscriptions; manage the transition to open access journals; focus on curating unique items; and develop new mechanisms for funding national infrastructure.
