This paper addresses the importance of documenting the history of traditionally underrepresented communities. It draws upon the author's experiences as director of the African American Women in Iowa Project, a collecting initiative launched by the Iowa Women's Archives at the University of Iowa Libraries and as curator of the Givens Collection of African American Literature, a rare book and manuscript collection housed in the Special Collections and Rare Books department at the University of Minnesota Libraries. The author discusses considerations for launching such documentation projects with a particular focus on cultivating strong relationships with donors of manuscript material. Archivists, regardless of racial, ethnic, or cultural background, need to assess their motives and prospective strategies prior to embarking on such documentation initiatives. Librarians choosing to offer periodicals via electronic resources encounter many factors which influence satisfaction with the project. The purpose of this paper is to bring to the reader's attention the frequently overlooked areas of accuracy of information, extent of coverage of a journal, and updating of the coverage. These primary concerns are given much less attention in the literature than are fees, licensing agreements, and equipment. The writer addresses the question: Exactly, what is online? A determination of which electronic resource meets collection development goals and objectives must include an evaluative analysis of online information. The starting point for such an analysis is to describe the level of quality required by local standards of excellence and that which will meet users' needs. The methodology in this study began with the development of a checklist itemizing typical journal contents and publication information. The list was marked as notes were made in a page-by-page comparison of current issues and recent volumes with a random sampling of titles online. Information Access Company's Business ASAP and Academic ASAP, EBSCO's Academic 1000 and UMI's ProQuest DirectR were studied. Numerous areas to examine in a local analysis are discussed. Librarians should be aware that full text coverage may mean selective items are covered in full text. The review of titles covered should include a look at the quality and appropriateness of the titles for the local library. Searching for the largest number of titles provided on an electronic resource may lead one away from collection development policies which are just as important for new formats as they are for paper formats. Our prevailing models for library collections and collections cooperation emerged in the analog era. The electronic environment has changed the terms of both analysis and activity. This paper explores four aspects of the shift. The relationship between de facto systems and explicit cooperative frameworks, and the conceptual framework for library collections, reflect the mental models with which we structure our activities. Both require a new look. The Janus Conference, held at Cornell University in the fall of 2005, sought to recast the agenda for research library collections and cooperation in the digital age. The meeting's prospects and implications, as of the spring of 2006, are thus surveyed as well. Actual responses to these challenges, finally, are likely to play out differently across specific segments of our library community. This dynamic provides a final focus for comment. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to focus on the Joint Library Facility services and how Medical Science Libraries have embraced the Resource in Common model to save service copies for their patron’s use while allowing libraries to reclaim critically needed space and develop library services that better meet the needs of their patrons.Design/methodology/approach The paper begins with a description of the Joint Library Facility and its targeted users. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to highlight the web-archiving as a tool for possible collection development in a research level academic library. The paper highlights the web-archiving project that dealt with the contemporary Ukraine conflict. Currently, as the conflict in Ukraine drags on, the need for collecting and preserving the information from various web-based resources with different ideological orientations acquires a special importance. The demise of the Soviet Union in 1991 and the emergence of independent republics were heralded by some as a peaceful transition to the “free-market” style economies. This transition was nevertheless nuanced and not seamless. Besides the incomplete market liberalization, rent-seeking behaviors of different sort, it was also accompanied by the almost ubiquitous use of and access to the internet and the internet communication technologies. Now 24 years later, the ongoing conflict in Ukraine also appears to be unfolding on the World Wide Web. With the Russian annexation of Crimea and its unification to the Russian Federation, the governmental and non-governmental websites of the Ukrainian Crimea suddenly came to represent a sort of “an endangered archive”.Design/methodology/approach The main purpose of this project was to make the information that is contained in Ukrainian and Russia websites available to the wider body of scholars and students over the longer period of time in a web archive. The author does not take any ideological stance on the legal status of Crimea or on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. There are currently several projects that are devoted to the preservation of these websites. This article also focuses on providing a survey of the landscape of these projects and highlights the ongoing web-archiving project that is entitled, “the Ukraine Crisis: 2014-2015” at the UC Berkeley Library.Findings The UC Berkeley’s Ukraine Conflict Archive was made available to public in March of 2015 after enough materials were archived. The initial purpose of the archive was to selectively harvest, and archive those websites that are bound to either disappear or change significantly during the evolution of Crimea’s accession to Russia. However, in the aftermath of the Crimean conflict, the ensuing of military conflict in Ukraine had forced to reevaluate the web-archiving strategy. The project was never envisioned to be a competing project to the Ukraine Conflict project. Instead, it was supposed to capture complimentary data that could have been missed by other similar projects. This web archive has been made public to provide a glimpse of what was happening and what is happening in Ukraine.Research limitations/implications Now 24 years later, the ongoing conflict in Ukraine also appears to be unfolding on the World Wide Web. With the Russian annexation of Crimea and its unification to the Russian Federation, the governmental and non-governmental websites of the Ukrainian Crimea suddenly came to represent a sort of “an endangered archive”. The impetus for archiving the selected Ukrainian websites came as a result of the changing geopolitical realities of Crimea. The daily changes to the websites and also loss of information that is contained within them is one of the many problems faced by the users of these websites. In some cases, the likelihood of these websites is relatively high. This in turn was followed by the author’s desire to preserve the information about the daily lives in Ukraine’s east in light of the unfolding violent armed conflict.Originality/value Upon close survey of the Library and Information Sciences currently published articles on Ukraine Conflict, no articles that are currently dedicated to archiving the Crimean and Ukrainian situations were found. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to present research findings from a project to identify, locate and examine the first collection of a large academic research institution. The article also examines changes in collections over time and some of the factors influencing changing collection development policies and practice. Design/methodology/approach – Methodology included historical archival research, collection discovery and item by item comparison. Findings – As electronic access, shared repositories and access to shared content reshape the collection development landscape, the emphasis is shifting toward global access and unique local content. And yet, we see that this new model is built on a solid foundation of collection development almost 150 years in the making. Originality/value – Understanding how the University Library got to where it is will help inform future decisions and directions regarding collection development, and allow others to compare our findings against their own institutional growth and forward trajectory. Purpose – The “build it and they will come approach” is a largely accepted proposition in the library community, particularly in the area of special collections. There is, at times, little critical analysis given to collection development, digitization efforts or information literacy instruction in regard to how these hard-to-serve but research-rich materials might be used in the classroom. Instead, there exists a benevolent know-it-all expert determining which collections warrant preservation, digitization, acquisition and, ultimately, attention. At California State University (CSU) Channel Islands (CI), the user – teachers and students – is the focus of all special collection activities, and we have devised innovative ways to both encourage students and faculty to engage these materials as well as foster their appreciation, awareness and use on campus. Design/methodology/approach – This paper explores three ways that librarians at the John Spoor Broome Library encourage and facilitate the use of primary documents housed in unique collections to support undergraduate student research. Findings – The use of high-impact teaching practices, like undergraduate research, is an important tool in promoting retention and increasing graduation rates, particularly for underrepresented minorities. At CSU CI and the John Spoor Broome Library, engaging students with primary documents is a focus of unique collections work that benefits both students and the Library alike. Originality/value – Digitization is a key component of most special collections work in the library world today, but perhaps efforts focused on promoting use are lacking. Purpose: Print knowledge is a powerful predictor of later reading abilities, which are crucial to children's academic success. Children with speech sound disorders (SSDs) are at risk for literacy difficulties. Speech sound therapy is an opportune time to address not only speech sound production but also the connections between speech sounds and their associated letters and letter patterns. This tutorial aims to provide a rich source of evidence to support the use of print and print-referencing in speech sound therapy sessions. We include feasible suggestions for speech-language pathologists (SLPs) to facilitate print-rich experiences for children with SSDs. Incorporating orthography into therapy sessions, through activities such as shared book reading, allows SLPs to address speech sound errors while supporting children's literacy development. Conclusions: This tutorial provides an overview of the risk of literacy deficits in children with SSDs and describes the theoretical underpinnings of why incorporating print is a powerful learning tool. We expand on the research behind print referencing in preschool classrooms. Finally, we provide detailed examples, including book lists and therapy ideas for a variety of ages, to help SLPs add print referencing to their therapy toolkit. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using survey data collected in 2023, this study explores issues around comics collections in academic libraries. In addition to gaining an understanding of the origins of several major academic library collections and current resource support for these collections and associated services, the study looks at the extent to which institutions are implementing measures for the long-term sustainability and preservation of these collections. The researchers found that the historic indifference to comics in an academic setting has resulted in the creation of hodgepodge collections with inconsistent approaches to collection development, staffing, outreach, and long-term growth. Considering the increased acceptance of comics in such settings, Flota, Thacker, and Larsen suggest that it is past time for institutions to be more intentional in planning and sustaining comics collections and services in academic libraries. Academic libraries want to collect the materials most useful to researchers, yet how can libraries know how successful they are? While Berkeley’s George and Mary Foster Anthropology Library collects data on which books circulate, it is difficult to evaluate how materials are actually being used to further the discipline of anthropology. In this article, we examine sources cited by our a) faculty members, b) dissertation writers, and c) honors thesis students to better understand how anthropologists read when conducting research. This paper compares materials used across subfields and research levels to highlight patterns in citations within this discipline, leading to new insights that will improve collection development among anthropology librarians. This paper describes the findings of a national survey of local music collection managers in Canadian libraries in 2018. The survey aims to capture a snapshot of local music collection management practices by identifying areas where collection managers make use of specialized skills and competencies and where practices may be improved. An online questionnaire was sent to local music collection managers in Canadian libraries and consisted of 20 questions that addressed demographics, collection scope, collection development, promotion, access, and preservation. The results show that local music collections are diverse in scope and include a wide range of formats. Many include archival materials or are described or organized using archival principles. Collection managers use a range of strategies to build and develop local music collections, including working with community members and donors to identify, select, and purchase collection materials. Collections are used most frequently by community members and researchers to conduct scholarly or historical research. Outreach and promotion are areas where collection managers are using diverse strategies, including community engagement, event hosting, and online marketing, to build awareness of collections. Physical and digital preservation practices are being implemented by most participants, and online access to collections is often available through additional collection description or digitization. Collection managers may face challenges due to the unique nature of local music collections. Strategies for collection management, collection development, outreach, or promotion may fall outside traditional professional skill sets or competencies. The realities of budgetary constraints, and a transformative digital world, point to a future in which academic libraries continue to expand demand driven acquisitions in order to maintain necessary access. However, legitimate concern has arisen regarding the affect this shift might have on the coverage and scope of library collections. The gathering of diverse perspectives, and subjects that support minorities may fall to the way side through the further embrace of DDA, buried in fulfilling the needs of the majority. This paper investigates the University of Utah's demand-driven acquisitions program and the potential for imbalance in the collection. Data regarding campus demographics and the DDA pool itself are considered. Rather than discouraging the use of DDA, the primary purpose of this research is to put forth tangible ways in which librarians can deliberately counterbalance the focus of DDA purchases in order to ensure collections remain inclusive and diverse. The academic library is increasingly moving to majority online collections. As the number of ebooks increase due to the current ebook purchasing model most libraries use, libraries are more likely to be duplicating titles across packages and platforms. Many libraries do not realize how many duplicate titles there are between packages or how duplicate records affect the user experience. Purpose This paper aims to provide an introduction to Māori, the indigenous people of New Zealand, briefly describing their origin, population structure, language and knowledge structures. There is also a description of the process by which Māori knowledge systems were transformed into a written structure from predominantly oral and visual forms. In the latter part of the paper, there is a discussion about how the growing demand by Māori clients changed the delivery of resources and services in New Zealand libraries and led to the development of Māori collections in libraries.Design/methodology/approach Using a case study approach this paper outlines the impact that literacy and publishing had on Māori traditional knowledge transfer methods. The implication of these developments and their importance to libraries is considered as part of the Treaty of Waitangi reconciliation process and the growing consciousness of the need to be fulfilling the information needs of Māori clients.Findings The development of Māori collection has been successful and plays a critical role in meeting the cultural, linguistic, research and recreational information needs of Māori clients.Research limitations/implications This case study provides a model for the development of indigenous collections in other countries.Originality/value This paper makes a contribution to an area that has not had a significant amount of literature published on it. Purpose This paper aims to review content provided in an article published in 1993 to determine if there is still a need to provide information services to American Indians living away from their homeland areas.Design/methodology/approach The design involved reviewing the content and recommendations provided in the 1993 article and then to update this content by reviewing updated US Census data, a literature review and observed examples based on personal observations and experiences.Findings The paper found that there is still a need for services due to increased American Indian population. While more American Indian librarians are employed, there is still a need for all librarians to learn how to serve this population.Originality/value While the article reviews content from 1993, it provides original perspectives and adds additional evaluation criteria. Research libraries spend millions of dollars acquiring, storing and accessing collections -- but how well do the collections we build meet the needs of our users? How do we know if we are equitably supporting a wide array of disciplines on campus, and more importantly, how well we support the research mission of our institution? In order to arrive at meaningful answers to these questions, we need to go beyond simple size measures such as dollars spent, volumes added, and number of e-journals licensed; and even beyond usage metrics such as interlibrary loan, total circulation and e-usage statistics. This paper will outline several approaches being used at Berkeley, including a citation analysis of doctoral dissertations, and how this new data is helping guide these difficult decisions. Libraries have always collected data from the number of books to the number of web page views. These statistics do not give a complete accounting of the library's value. To fully demonstrate the value of libraries, and justify budgets, librarians have increasingly turned to economic valuations. Yet, economic valuations are challenging for non-profit, cultural and educational institutions. This paper reviews the positive and negative aspects of economic valuation for libraries. Purpose -- The purpose of this paper is to examine the development of a flexible collections assessment rubric comprised of a suite of tools for more consistently and effectively evaluating and expressing a holistic value of library collections to a variety of constituents, from administrators to faculty and students, with particular emphasis to the use of data already being collected at libraries to "take the temperature" of how responsive collections are in supporting institutional goals. Design/methodology/approach -- Using a literature review, internal and external conversations, several collections pilot projects, and a variety of other investigative mechanisms, this paper explores methods for creating a more flexible, holistic collection development and assessment model using both qualitative and quantitative data. Findings -- The products of scholarship that academic libraries include in their collections are expanding exponentially and range from journals and monographs in all formats, to databases, data sets, digital text and images, streaming media, visualizations and animations. Content is also being shared in new ways and on a variety of platforms. Yet the framework for evaluating this new landscape of scholarly output is in its infancy. So, how do libraries develop and assess collections in a consistent, holistic, yet agile, manner? Libraries must employ a variety of mechanisms to ensure this goal, while remaining flexible in adapting to the shifting collections environment. Purpose – This paper aims to provide insights into issues encountered in maintaining library technologies and electronic collections in changing times and on a limited budget with limited personnel. Design/methodology/approach – The paper uses real-world experiences and anecdotal evidence to provide commentary on progress and the future of libraries as it relates to letting go of traditional practices and procedures and embracing new ideas and directions. Findings – Weeding a large collection of materials with limited personnel and finances is no easy task. Aside from the functional aspects of handling and processing thousands of volumes there are emotional aspects to discarding that can be overwhelming for some. There is also the fear that one may be throwing away something useful or valuable. John K. Fairbank served as the Director of the American Publications Service under the American Embassy in China during WWII, with responsibility for collecting Chinese and Japanese information and intelligence for the American government. As a Chinese studies scholar himself, Fairbank initiated and participated in several important projects of collecting Chinese publications and exchanging materials for leading American institutions, especially the Library of Congress, Harvard University, and Columbia University. He also supported the sending of English-language materials to China as gift or as exchange. His personal relationship with the ambitious and energetic Chinese scholar and library leader Yuan Tung-li played a crucial role in his career in wartime China. By examining the American Publications Service and the International Cultural Service, the two most important organisations for library and cultural exchange between China and the US during the war, this paper aims to document and analyse Fairbank's special contributions to the collection development of Chinese materials in American research libraries. Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to adapt a repertory grid technique to investigate fiction readers' attitudes and beliefs, with a specific focus on minority ethnic fiction. Design/methodology/approach - The study required participants (n = 36) to rate on a seven-point Likert scale a series of 16 provided constructs, using ten main elements, namely, the reader of ten fiction genres. Statistical tests investigated participant agreement across construct ratings, where on average fiction readers are rated on a construct continuum, and the extent to which public library work experience affected participants' perceptions. Findings - Findings were revealed regarding the perceived characteristics of the readers of ten fiction genres, including minority ethnic fiction. The readers of Asian and Black British fiction were similarly rated, but certain exceptions were also noted which had not been reported in previous research. Although intraclass correlations indicated that ratings were consistent for the more established fiction genres, there was little agreement regarding minority fiction. Research limitations/implications - The research was potentially limited by the ethnic homogeneity of the sample population and the gender imbalance of same, and (in some cases) a lack of knowledge of minority fiction genres. It was felt that the repertory grid was an effective technique via which to build a rich profile of the fiction reader. Practical implications - This research could inform the development of fiction collections, and its detailed examination of fiction reader profiles could be adapted in three specific ways, as described in the paper. Originality/value - Little previous research has been conducted to differentiate between readers of different fiction genres, and less still for those of minority ethnic fiction genres. The UK Research Councils (RCUK) introduced an open access policy, and accompanying funding for Article Processing Charges (APCs), in April 2013. This article describes University College London (UCL)’s experience of managing its institutional, RCUK, and Wellcome Trust open access funds, and highlights its success in exceeding the RCUK target in the first year of the policy. A large institution, processing around 1,770 APCs in 2013–2014, UCL has established a dedicated Open Access Funding Team. As well as advising authors on funders’ and publishers’ requirements, managing payments, and liaising with publishers, the Team delivers a comprehensive open access advocacy programme throughout the institution. As the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown and remote course delivery recede in the rear-view mirror, academic librarians look to what the future holds for streaming video. During 2020 and 2021, library-funded streaming video requests soared while library budgets declined. Librarians are concerned that this trend will continue beyond budgetary limits. This paper describes an analysis of streaming video usage from 2019 through 2022 at California State University, Fresno. The results provide evidence that the elevated growth rate is tapering off at this institution, but the medium remains popular. The impact of streaming media on library budgets and collection development policies is also discussed. This brief communication builds on the application of content-based image retrieval (CBIR) and reverse image lookup (RIL), a graduated form of CBIR, as assessment tools for digital library image reuse. It combines literature on the definition, history, usefulness, and limitations of RIL and includes a brief analysis of the 4 published digital library image reuse assessment case studies. This article describes briefly legal stipulations on collection building and public access to printed matter (grey literature as well as market publications) in Iceland since a printing press was brought to the country around 1530 (Sigurdsson, 1971). The importance of public access to knowledge and information in a democratic society is argued for. The findings of a study (2002) on the changes in proportions of grey versus white literature from 1944 to 2001 are described. They indicated greatly increase output of written knowledge in Iceland during the latter half of the 20th century, in particular increases in GL, international peer reviewed journal articles, and patent applications. Moreover a suspicion arose that GL might increasingly have been produced in-house, and published electronically as the 20th century drew to a close. If so that would have been a problem because publications produced in-house were often not delivered on legal deposit, due to ignorance of their producers of the law. The e-medium was, furthermore, not covered by the Legal Deposit Act no. 43/1977 in force until the 1st of January 2003 and therefore access, both bibliographic and to the publications themselves, was difficult or even missing. The findings of the follow-up study in 2012 indicated that contrary to expectations technological developments that facilitated in-house production of GL and e-publishing towards the end of the 20th century and at the beginning of the 21st century had made GL harder to access. Amendments to the Legal Deposit Act no. 20/2002 were necessary to maintain the kind of public access stipulated in previous legal acts in Iceland and enjoyed by the Icelandic public during the period of print on paper. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to analyze the bibliography citations from dissertations submitted to the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Rutgers University from the ten-year period of 2003-2012. The objective of the analysis is to aid in collection development decisions, facilitate outreach to graduate students in the department and to understand possible changes in disciplinary methodologies and research needs in the field over the last decade. Design/methodology/approach – Descriptive research design was used for the study. Bibliography citation data were extracted from all dissertations submitted to the Department of Spanish and Portuguese from the period 2003-2012. Statistical analysis was performed on the collected citation data, and conclusions were drawn from the results. Findings – The study demonstrates that, despite the oft-mentioned “decline of the monograph”, the monograph remains very heavily used by PhD students in Spanish and Portuguese at Rutgers University, and that monographs continue to be cited at significantly higher rates and for longer periods than journal articles. This holds true for the humanities dissertations in Spanish literature as well as social science dissertations in Spanish linguistics. The study further finds that open access journals in Spanish literature are cited more frequently than closed access journals. Practical implications – The findings suggest that it is more user-responsive to allocate retrospective collections funds for filling in monographic gaps than journal coverage gaps, as journal articles are cited less frequently and for shorter periods, while monographs are cited more frequently and for slightly longer periods after they are published. The findings also suggest that current monographic expenditures be maintained or augmented to continue serving current and future graduate student research needs in Spanish and Portuguese. Further, the large number of monograph chapters cited suggests that book chapter document delivery services could be an important addition to a library’s suite of services if it is not already provided. Originality/value – This paper is the first analysis of Spanish and Portuguese dissertations conducted at Rutgers University and provides important contextual information for meeting the research needs of graduate students in the department through collection development and related services. Other research has documented that dissertation citation patterns are at least partially predictive of faculty citation patterns, making the findings of this study applicable to serving faculty research and collections needs in the department, as well. Purpose -- The purpose of this paper is to review current strategies in collections, selection and the access libraries provide, to present scenarios that illustrate the roles libraries are beginning to play and to discuss viable strategies for libraries in the future. Design/methodology/approach -- An extensive review of the literature was conducted to identify current strategies in collections and selection, and to explore innovations in access strategies that reveal future directions. Findings -- Librarians are redefining collections and selection, implementing new strategies to provide information that is more relevant to today's needs, focusing more intently on niche collections and experimenting in access strategies to market information and increase use. Practical implications -- Libraries' survival depends on re-thinking the philosophy and approach to collections, selection and access. Social implications -- Libraries need this shift in thinking and approach to find their place in the new information world. The transition of geographic atlases existing only in paper, or print, form to digital forms has given rise to necessary changes in the map librarianship world regarding collection development, bibliographic control, patron use, and archiving issues. In this article, we will be focusing on atlases in the geographic realm as initiated by Mercator, though atlases in general can have other inherent meanings. We describe the issues that arise from digital atlases and how they impact both the user and the librarian, and we provide a call to arms for anyone charged with collecting, describing, utilizing, storing, or preserving these evolving new types of atlases. Purpose – This paper aims to provide reasons for developing an anime collection within academic libraries as well as providing guidance in starting such a collection. Design/methodology/approach – This paper is based upon research of literature and anime-related websites, as well as familiarity gained through viewing anime. Findings – Anime is a medium that can be used to explore all genres, as well as universal themes, and provide a glimpse of Japanese life. The study of film has been accepted for decades and the study of animation has grown from that but has been restricted to primarily American animation. Anime is animation specific to Japan which can inspire students and faculty to explore another culture. Libraries should provide classic anime that can support cross-cultural and interdisciplinary studies. By creating an anime collection, a library will provide their community with engaging materials that can be used for enjoyment as well as study. A list of core titles is included. Originality/value – This paper reflects recent trends toward increased interest in Japanese popular culture, specifically anime, and offers academic libraries a rationale for including such materials within their collection to connect with their students and faculty. This paper reports on an on-going project to adapt critical interpretive synthesis (CIS), an interpretive method for synthesizing collections of both quantitative and qualitative research reports, for practical use by librarian subject selectors in current awareness activities and collection development. The authors critically assess a previous attempt at CIS for collection development--one that involved the subject area of journalism and popular culture--to inform and update their analytical strategies and streamline the method. These strategies are implemented in a second bid at CIS involving current research in philosophical ethics. It is determined that strategic shifts in both sampling and qualitative analytical procedures do much towards improving CIS's potential as a practical tool. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to identify contributing factors, both internal and external, that will ensure a successful collaboration between Omani academic libraries. Design/methodology/approach – A qualitative research approach was adopted, and 23 individual interviews were conducted with representatives from participating libraries. Findings – Collaboration among Omani libraries is a complex situation and its chances for success are dependent upon a host of factors, including the participating libraries' staffing, management, financial resources, and available technology as well as support from university administrators. Originality/value – This paper presents the findings of original research conducted by the author and reports on the nascent stages of library cooperation in Oman and in a region that is not often covered in library literature. Purpose - The aim of this paper is to determine whether the accelerated growth of web content during the years 1989-2011 had an effect on New Mexico State University engineering PhD students' use of the library's collections. The research also solicited direct input from PhD advisors regarding their expectations for and perceptions of present day PhD reference lists. If the collections were being used with less frequency, there would be reason to increase outreach to the engineering graduate student population, as well as to review current engineering collection development policies. Design/methodology/approach - Reference lists from College of Engineering PhD dissertations produced 1989-1991 (pre-web), 1999-2001 (web-emergent), and 2009-2011 (post-web) time periods were analyzed using descriptive statistics. PhD faculty advisors from the College of Engineering were interviewed about their expectations for, and perceptions of, research resources used in PhD dissertations. Findings - The number of resources cited, percentages of type of resource (e.g. book, journal, patent, etc.) and age of citation did not vary substantially over time, although the percentage of journal articles cited to total number of citations per dissertation increased post-web. Some websites were cited in the post-web period, but not in significant numbers. Engineering faculty expressed concerns that some PhD students were not critically evaluating and fully synthesizing the information they were citing in the literature review sections of their dissertations. Originality/value - The results of the citation study provided PhD faculty advisors with the positive news that there appears to be no degradation in the quality of references post-web. However, the expressed faculty interest in seeing some dissertators undertake a more robust analysis of the literature created an outreach opportunity for the engineering librarian: a graduate student workshop in how to use the library collections to perform a thorough survey of the relevant research in order to write an effective literature review. Purpose - This paper aims to examine the academic and financial value of ebrary Academic Complete package to the Adelphi University Libraries. Design/methodology/approach - ebrary provided statistics and this sample was used to analyze subject usage and overlap with the print collection. Findings - It was found that although there was overlap with the print collection, the usage statistics are high enough to warrant continued subscription. This paper outlines how to use specialized cataloging to evaluate discovery tools for library collections. An awareness of the capability offered by bibliographic records and data for specialized materials enables libraries to conduct their own evaluation of a discovery tool's functionality for complex materials. Bibliographic records for materials such as music are excellent for putting a discovery tool through rigorous testing. This paper may be used to facilitate evaluation of discovery tools by those without music cataloging expertise, and it provides a ready supply of examples to quickly identify complex search strategies. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the concept of adding value and in particular to suggest ways in which libraries can add even more value than they do so now. Design/methodology/approach – With this primarily a literature review combined with some examples of ways in which some libraries are adding value in new and interesting ways. This paper seeks to extend the work of Robert Taylor who developed a Value-Added Model. Findings – Libraries must find new ways to add value to their collections and services as competitors continue to introduce convenient services that are drawing people away from libraries. The ways in which a library might add new value have been grouped into five broad categories: community, content, context, collaboration, or co-creation and connection. Each category is discussed in some detail and examples are provided to illustrate possibilities. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to present a conference report on the issues surrounding the emergence of e-books discussed during panels and presentations at the 2011 Frankfurt Book Fair (October 12-16). Design/methodology/approach – This report was generated based on the author's personal observations at the Book Fair, combined with research into the topic of e-book pricing and purchasing models. Findings – The paper finds that publishers have not yet developed an appropriate business model for pricing and distributing e-books, which will affect libraries. While this business model is still "up in the air," libraries should communicate their needs to publishers. Ideally, this can help in creating a model that benefits both publishers and libraries, and therefore the public. Originality/value – This paper provides a look at the issues publishers are facing from the perspective of one of their major markets – libraries. The unique perspective of a librarian at a publisher's trade fair is given through the hot topic of e-books – which will continue to be a hot topic in the world of publishers and libraries, at least until a solid business model is established.
