How does a smaller, fully online academic library offer a wide and deep collection of academic level e-books to its distance learners in a sustainable and affordable way? The State University of New York (SUNY) Empire State College Online Library, with a staff of four, has used demand-driven e-book acquisitions since September 2013. Despite widespread publisher price increases, this DDA program continues to deliver quality content to users. This presentation will explore the e-book demand-driven acquisition (DDA) model in the context of that implementation. This will include in-depth analysis of usage data and costs, as well as impacts on course development, budget and inter-library loan. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Although e-books date back to the 1970s, the peak of academic adoption was in the early to mid-2000s. At the beginning of the 2012/2013 academic year, the Franklin & Marshall (F&M) College Library had roughly 500,000 print volumes cataloged and only 12 e-books. By the end of that year, the catalog contained approximately 120,000 e-books. In February 2014, the F&M College Library conducted a campus-wide survey about e-books. By comparing these results with F?s usage statistics, the Library found practical suggestions on how to improve current acceptance and usage of e-books. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An evaluation of the Free Library of Philadelphia's (FLP) rowing collection by the checklist method is reported. A literature review demonstrates that the checklist method has been used for multiple purposes for over a century and a half, but no evaluations of library rowing collections by the checklist or any other method were identified. In this study, an ad hoc 70-item list, compiled by a rowing expert, was checked against the FLP's OPAC from a remote location in Indiana. The FLP held 53% of the listed items and no fewer than 40% in any of six topical categories. A keyword search found that the FLP holds over 100 fiction and nonfiction rowing books. An analysis of those titles by publication date shows considerable depth in the FLP collection and a correspondence between its collecting patterns and broader trends in publishing and rowing. It is concluded that the FLP has an in-depth, high quality rowing collection. A number of problems encountered while searching the OPAC are discussed and questions for further research are proposed. This article presents the meeting minutes of the Association for Library Collection and Technical Services Directors of Large Research Libraries Discussion Group, held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on January 24, 2003. Judi Nadler provided comments to serve as a springboard for a discussion of some of the issues libraries face in maintaining both print and electronic journals. The findings of studies show that the comfort level with electronic forms is high but use of print still remains substantial. This presents libraries with tough choices at a time of increasing budget constraints. In the process of reviewing journal subscriptions for possible cancellations, availability of electronic versions is one of the factors considered, though not the major factor. Among the primary considerations for canceling a journal are relevance to research, impact factors as measured by citation studies, local use and price. Jean Hirons spoke in education for catalogers. Most libraries have staff members who serve as trainers or who have attended a continuing education course. Twenty-nine people are currently attending the Serials Cataloging Cooperative Training Program course on Integrating Resources. This model calls on those with expertise, catalogers, to develop courses ad then train experienced librarians to give the courses.
