To evaluate the effects of cooling between exercise sessions on intramuscular water movement and muscle performance, the lower extremities of nine untrained men were assigned to either a cooling protocol (20-min water immersion, 15 °C) or a noncooling protocol. Each subject performed two exercise sessions involving maximal concentric knee extension and flexion (three repetitions, 60°/s; followed by 50 repetitions, 180°/s). The peak torque at 60°/s and total work, mean power, and decrease rate of torque value at 180°/s were evaluated. Axial magnetic resonance diffusion-weighted images of the mid-thigh were obtained before and after each exercise session. Apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values for the quadriceps and hamstrings were calculated for evaluating intramuscular water movement. Both groups exhibited significantly increased ADC values for the quadriceps and hamstrings after each exercise session. These ADC values returned to the pre-exercise level after water immersion. No significant difference was observed in muscle performance from first exercise session to the next in either group, except for increased total work and mean power in knee flexion in the cooled group. Cooling intervention between exercise sessions decreased exercise-induced elevation of intramuscular water movement and had some beneficial effects on muscle endurance of knee flexors, but not knee extensors., (© 2012 John Wiley & Sons A/S. In this study, we determined the effects of different cooling treatments on exercised muscles. Seven adults underwent four post-exercise treatments (20-min ice-bag application, 60-min gel-pack application at 10 degrees C and 17 degrees C, and non-cooling treatment) with at least 1 week between treatments. Magnetic resonance diffusion- and T2-weighted images were obtained to calculate the apparent diffusion coefficients (apparent diffusion coefficient 1, which reflects intramuscular water diffusion and microcirculation, and apparent diffusion coefficient 2, which is approximately equal to the true diffusion coefficient that excludes as much of the effect of intramuscular microcirculation as possible) and the T2 values (intramuscular water content level) of the ankle dorsiflexors, respectively, before and after ankle dorsiflexion exercise and after post-exercise treatment. The T2 values increased significantly after exercise and returned to pre-exercise values after each treatment; no significant differences were observed among the four post-exercise treatments. Both apparent diffusion coefficients also increased significantly after exercise and decreased significantly after the three cooling treatments; no significant difference was detected among the three cooling treatments. Local cooling suppresses both water diffusion and microcirculation within exercised muscles. Moreover, although the treatment time was longer, adequate cooling effects could be achieved using the gel-pack applications at relatively mild cooling temperatures.

To investigate the effects of cooling on local temperature and circulation in the skin and skeletal muscle at different cooling temperatures. Ten male subjects (mean age 24.9 years) participated in this study. Intramuscular temperatures were measured by inserting two 22-gauge temperature probes (needle length; 8 and 18 mm) into the ankle dorsiflexors, while skin temperature was measured using a thermocouple attached to the leg skin anteriorly. Near-infrared spectroscopy was also used to evaluate the concentration changes in oxygenated, deoxygenated, and total hemoglobin/myoglobin in local skin and skeletal muscle. These measurements were simultaneously performed during the 10-min noncooling, 30-min cooling (cooling pad temperature; 0, 10, or 20 degrees C), and 60-min recovery periods. Under all cooling conditions, skin and intramuscular temperatures decreased during cooling (P < 0.01) and began to increase after the cooling pad was removed. However, these values did not return to baseline values during the recovery period (P < 0.01). Moreover, tissue temperatures tended to show lower values during cooling at lower cooling temperatures. All hemoglobin/myoglobin concentrations also showed a concomitant significant decrease during cooling under three cooling conditions (P < 0.01); the oxygenated and total hemoglobin/myoglobin concentrations did not return to the exact values before cooling during the recovery period. This study suggested that the rate of decrease in tissue temperature depends on the cooling temperature and the effects of cooling on tissue temperatures and circulation tend to be maintained during 60 min post-cooling period despite the cooling temperature.

Purpose: To investigate the effects of cooling human skeletal muscle after strenuous exercise using 31P MR spectroscopy and MR imaging., Methods: 14 male subjects (mean age +/- SD, 23.8 +/- 2.3 yr) were randomly assigned to the normal (N = 7) or the cooling group (N = 7). All subjects performed the ankle plantar flexion exercise (12 repetitions, 5 sets). Localized 31P-spectra were collected from the medial gastrocnemius before and after exercise (immediately, 30, 60 min, 24, 48, 96, and 168 h) to determine the ratio of inorganic phosphate to phosphocreatine (Pi/PCr) and intracellular pH. Transaxial T2-weighted MR images of the medial gastrocnemius were obtained to calculate T2 relaxation time (T2), indicative of intramuscular water level, before and after exercise (24, 48, 96, and 168 h). In addition, the muscle soreness level was assessed at the same time as 31P-spectra measurements. Fifteen-minute cold-water immersion was administered to the cooling group after exercise and initial postexercise measurements., Results: The control group showed significantly increased T2 from rest at 48 h after exercise (P < 0.05), but the cooling group showed no significant change in T2 throughout this study. Both groups showed a significantly decreased intracellular pH immediately after exercise (P < 0.05). After that, the cooling group showed a significantly greater value than the value at rest or the control group at 60 min after exercise (P < 0.05). For the Pi/PCr, no significant change was observed in both groups throughout this study. The muscle soreness level significantly increased immediately and at 24-48 h after exercise in both groups (P < 0.05)., Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that cooling causes an increase in intracellular pH and prevents the delayed muscle edema.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the separate effects of cooling during the acute (within 60 min post-exercise) or subacute (24-168 h post-exercise) phase on skeletal muscle after exercise. Twenty-eight male subjects [mean (SD) 23.8 (1.8) years] were randomly assigned to the control (COTG, n=10), cold-water immersion (CWIG, n=9), and double-cold-water immersion groups (DCWIG, n=9). The cold-water immersion (15 min) was administered to the subjects' legs after calf-raise exercise (CWIG: after recording initial post-exercise measures, DCWIG: after recording initial and 24 h post-exercise measures). Magnetic resonance T2-weighted images were obtained to calculate the T2 relaxation time (T2) of the triceps surae muscle before, immediately after, and at the following times post-exercise: 20, 40, and 60 min, and 24, 48, 96 and 168 h. In addition, the ankle joint range of motion, serum creatine kinase and lactate dehydrogenase, and muscle soreness level were investigated before and after exercise. In all groups, significant T2 elevations in the gastrocnemius muscle appeared from immediately after to 60 min after exercise (P<0.05). Thereafter, COTG showed significantly re-elevated T2 levels in the gastrocnemius at 96-168 h post-exercise (P<0.05), while CWIG and DCWIG showed significantly smaller T2 values than the COTG at 96 h post-exercise (P<0.05). In addition, COTG showed larger increases in serum enzymes at 96 h post-exercise (not significant) and significantly greater muscle soreness levels at 48 h post-exercise (P<0.05) than the cooling groups. The results of this study may suggest that cooling has no dramatic effect, but some minor effects on reducing exercise-induced muscle edema in the subacute phase and relieving the extent of the damaged muscle cells.
