Background: Prospective memory is a critical neurocognitive capacity that refers to the ability to execute delayed intentions. To date, few studies have investigated the effects of acute alcohol consumption on prospective memory, and important questions remain about the mechanisms that might underpin acute alcohol-induced prospective memory impairment., Aims: The current study sought to clarify the nature and magnitude of prospective memory difficulties following acute alcohol consumption and to test the degree to which any problems with prospective remembering might be a secondary consequence of broader cognitive impairment. This study also investigated whether there were potential sex differences., Methods: In all, 124 healthy adult social drinkers were assigned to either the alcohol ( n = 61) or placebo ( n = 63) condition. Participants were administered a dose of 0.6 g/kg alcohol or a matched placebo drink and then asked to complete a measure of prospective memory. A broader neurocognitive test battery was also administered., Results: Relative to the placebo condition, acute alcohol intoxication led to significant impairment on all prospective memory tasks, with effects mostly large in magnitude. These difficulties could not be explained by broader problems in retrospective memory, executive function or episodic future thinking. In addition, females recorded a higher blood alcohol concentration than males; however, no sex differences in prospective memory performance were identified following acute alcohol use., Conclusion: The results show that acutely, even a moderate dose of alcohol substantially impairs prospective memory function. These findings have potentially important implications for understanding many of the maladaptive behaviours associated with acute alcohol consumption.

Background: Long-term opiate users experience pervasive social difficulties, but there has been surprisingly limited research focused on social-cognitive functioning in this population., Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate whether three important aspects of social cognition (facial emotion recognition, theory of mind (ToM) and rapid facial mimicry) differ between long-term opiate users and healthy controls., Methods: The participants were 25 long-term opiate users who were enrolled in opiate substitution programmes, and 25 healthy controls. Facial emotion recognition accuracy was indexed by responses to 60 photographs of faces depicting the six basic emotions (happiness, sadness, anger, fear, surprise and disgust). ToM was assessed using the Reading the Mind in the Eyes task, which requires participants to infer mental states of others from partial facial cues. Rapid facial mimicry was assessed by recording activity in the zygomaticus major and corrugator supercilii muscle regions while participants passively viewed images of happy and angry facial expressions., Results: Relative to the control group, the opiate user group exhibited deficits in both facial emotion recognition and ToM. Moreover, only control participants exhibited typical rapid facial mimicry responses to happy facial expressions., Conclusions: These data indicate that long-term opiate users exhibit abnormalities in three distinct areas of social-cognitive processing, pointing to the need for additional work to establish how social-cognitive functioning relates to functional outcomes in this group. Such work may ultimately inform the development of interventions aimed at improving treatment outcomes for long-term opiate users.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is one of the most common neurodegenerative disorders, and is associated with prominent motor deficits. However, neurocognitive impairment is also a common clinical feature that can contribute greatly to the overall disease burden. In the current study, a meta-analysis was conducted to gain a clearer understanding of how PD affects one of the most functionally important domains of cognition: prospection. The results indicate that, relative to controls, PD is associated with a large deficit in the capacity to engage in planning (g = -0.81, K = 25) and a moderate-sized deficit in prospective memory (g = -0.57, K = 16). Sub-analyses indicated that these deficits are evident for both time and event-based prospective memory, as well as for prospective memory tasks that have relatively limited ecological validity. Significant impairment was also evident for both medicated and non-medicated PD sub-groups, but for planning, these deficits were substantially greater in the unmedicated sub-group. People with schizophrenia often experience difficulties with prospective memory (PM), but few empirical studies have directly compared the effectiveness of different types of reminders in remediating these difficulties. In the present study, two distinct types of reminders were compared to a standard (no reminder) condition in outpatients with schizophrenia (n = 30) and controls (n = 30). Using an adapted version of the well-validated laboratory PM measure, Virtual Week, participants were asked to complete three different conditions (counterbalanced), in which they were (i) provided with access to self-initiated reminders, (ii) provided with experimenter-initiated reminders, and (iii) completed a standard (no-reminder) condition. Both groups benefited from the provision of reminders, but self-initiated reminders were the most beneficial, particularly for time-based tasks. These data align with a broader literature that shows PM can be enhanced by the use of reminders. However, it extends this literature in an important way by showing that these benefits are equivalent for people with schizophrenia, and may be greatest where access to reminders is self-initiated. Objective: Prospective memory (PM) is crucial to the maintenance of functional independence in late adulthood and is consistently impaired in mild cognitive impairment (MCI). There remains a need for brief but valid measures of this construct that can be used as part of a comprehensive clinical assessment of cognition. Since the distinctiveness of PM cues is argued to determine the degree of strategic, controlled demands of PM paradigms, two variants of a brief measure were developed, one of which presented low-salience and the other high-salience PM cues., Method: A large cohort of older adults with normal cognition or MCI was assessed with one of the two variants of our brief, novel measure of PM. Participants were asked to remember to execute PM tasks where the target cue was either high or low in salience, while concurrently engaged in an ongoing task of olfactory assessment., Results: The task was able to discriminate between groups of participants with MCI or no cognitive impairment, albeit with a small effect size. The high-salience cue improved performance on the PM task; however, there was no interaction of cue salience with group., Conclusions: These results suggest that the temporal reliability and construct validity of very brief measures of the type used in this study need further exploration to determine their potential to provide meaningful insights into PM function. This measure may have utility as a brief screening tool, with identified deficits being followed up with a more comprehensive PM assessment.

Background: Prospective memory refers to memory for future intentions and is a critical predictor of functional capacity in late adulthood. For many other cognitive abilities, self- and informant-rated methods of assessment are routinely used to guide clinical decision-making. However, little is known about the validity (and consequently the clinical utility) of subjective reports of prospective memory difficulties., Objective: The aim of this study was to compare clinical [mild cognitive impairment (MCI), dementia] and nonclinical older adults (healthy controls) on self- and informant-rated versions of prospective and retrospective memory function, as well as objective measures of prospective memory. Critical here was not only the assessment of between-group differences, but also whether these different methods of assessing memory function would show appropriate convergent and discriminant validity., Methods: A total of 138 participants aged between 64 and 92 years, diagnosed with dementia (n=37), MCI (n=48) or no impairment (n=53), were asked to complete self- and informant-rated versions of the Prospective and Retrospective Memory Questionnaire (PRMQ). Participants also completed behavioural measures of global cognitive function [the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE)], as well as a behavioural measure of prospective memory (Virtual Week)., Results: Self-reported impairments were equivalent across the three groups, and informant reports of impairment, while higher for those with dementia, did not distinguish MCI from controls. For the combined sample and for all three groups separately, both self- and informant reports of prospective memory showed poor convergent validity, at best correlating only weakly with Virtual Week. Self-reported prospective memory was correlated with informant report only in the dementia group, not in the control or MCI groups. Convergent and discriminant validity were poor, with self- and informant-rated prospective memory more strongly related to self- and informant-rated retrospective memory than to scores on Virtual Week., Conclusion: These data indicate that self-report and informant report may neither accurately measure prospective memory of older people, nor be sensitive to objective prospective memory difficulties in people with MCI and dementia. Background: Screening for self-care capacity is advocated before applying educational strategies. No screening tool has been specifically developed to assess barriers that impede engagement in self-care in people with heart failure. Earlier conceptual work (InCOGNITO) identified NYHA class, mild cognitive impairment and depressive symptoms as barriers that impede engagement in HF self-care., Aims: Study aims were: 1) to develop the Heart Failure Screening Tool (Heart-FaST) as a means of assessing three critical barriers to self-care; 2) to assess the content validity of the Heart-FaST; and 3) to test the feasibility of implementing the Heart-FaST in clinical practice., Methods: The Heart-FaST was developed from barriers identified in previous research (InCOGNITO) and from expert panel consensus. Content validity was assessed by examining the proportion of experts who scored each item as relevant., Results: The InCOGNITO study indicated that four cognitive tasks, seven emotional questions and NYHA functional class were significantly correlated with the self-care scales: maintenance, management and confidence. These factors were used to create the Heart-FaST items. Consensus on wording and items to be included in the Heart-FaST was reached after two rounds of panel discussion. All items had an item-level content validity index ≥ 0.78. High scores on each barrier (physical, cognitive and emotional functioning) suggest poor self-care and the need for more intensive disease management efforts., Conclusion: The Heart-FaST measures three critical barriers that impede engagement in self-care. Participants diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), dementia and controls completed measures that required decoding emotions from point-light displays of bodily motion, and static images of facial affect. Both of these measures tap social cognitive processes that are considered critical for social competency. Consistent with prior literature, both clinical groups were impaired on the static measure of facial affect recognition. The dementia (but not the MCI) group additionally showed difficulties interpreting biological motion cues. However, this did not reflect a specific deficit in decoding emotions, but instead a more generalized difficulty in processing visual motion (both to action and to emotion). These results align with earlier studies showing that visual motion processing is disrupted in dementia, but additionally show for the first time that this extends to the recognition of socially relevant biological motion. The absence of any MCI related impairment on the point-light biological emotion measure (coupled with deficits on the measure of facial affect recognition) also point to a potential disconnect between the processes implicated in the perception of emotion cues from static versus dynamic stimuli. For clinical (but not control) participants, performance on all recognition measures was inversely correlated with level of semantic memory impairment. (JINS, 2012, 18, 1-8).

OBJECTIVE. Naturalistic measures of prospective memory (PM) show less age-related decline than laboratory measures. We investigated whether a naturalistic measure of PM differentiates between normal ageing, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and dementia. METHOD. Ninety-eight older adults agreed to perform a time-based PM task in their everyday lives. RESULTS. Despite a self-selection bias in task acceptance, dementia participants performed more poorly relative to both the MCI and control group. Performance on the naturalistic PM task showed good convergent validity with both a cognitive screening measure and a laboratory PM assessment. CONCLUSIONS. PM difficulties are experienced in the everyday lives of people with dementia and are related to laboratory-based assessments but do not appear to be evident on a naturalistic task for those with MCI., (©2011 The British Psychological Society.)
