Simple Summary: Laboratory and field observations were used to evaluate the compatibility of yellow sticky cards with augmentative releases of T. dendrolimi for control of orchard pests, particularly C. sasakii and G. molesta. Female T. dendrolimi showed stronger attraction to yellow and white than to red, green or blue. Yellow sticky cards trapped significant numbers of T. dendrolimi in the field, reducing biological control of C. sasakii as well as the number of lacewings naturally recruited to the orchard. Judicious use of yellow sticky cards in orchards is therefore recommended to avoid disruption of biological control, specifically removing them in May before peak flights of moth pests require releases of egg parasitoids. Integrated pest management relies upon mutual compatibility among pest control tactics. The fruit-boring moths Carposina sasakii and Grapholita molesta can be devastating pests of pome and stone fruit production. Trichogramma dendrolimi parasitizes the eggs of these pests, preventing their eclosion, but its efficacy can be reduced by other pest control tactics. We tested T. dendrolimi attraction to five colors, and moth attraction to six colors, in laboratory choice tests, and thereafter deployed yellow sticky cards in tandem with releases of T. dendrolimi in field trials in a pear orchard. Yellow sticky cards deployed at high density trapped T. dendrolimi and reduced their numbers post-release. They also trapped adult G. molesta, which appeared to compensate for reduced egg parasitism on this species, but not on C. sasakii, which had higher abundance in plots with yellow sticky cards. The cards also captured adult lacewings, likely reducing their numbers in the field, but did not capture large numbers of lady beetles. The results suggest that yellow sticky cards can be used at high density to control aphids, psyllids and leafhoppers in early spring (March and April) when natural enemies are in low numbers, then removed in May so as not to interfere with augmentative releases of T. dendrolimi that must be timed to coincide with peak flights of fruit-boring moths. Abstract: Previous work revealed that Harmonia axyridisPallas (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) in Beijing, China, were capable of regenerating a forelimb amputated in the fourth instar; 75% of surviving individuals fully regenerated the limb during pupation. In this study, we tested a population of H. axyridis invasive in North America and found that virtually 100% of beetles surviving the operation successfully regenerated the limb. Ablated/regenerated beetles spent longer in pupation, and emerging females were smaller than controls. However, reproductive success was unaffected in all pairwise crosses of control/regenerated adults; there were no differences in pre‐oviposition period, the time required to produce 10 clutches, 10‐day fecundity, or the fertility of eggs, whereas ablated/regenerated parents paid a developmental cost, their progeny obtained benefits. Offspring of crosses that included a regenerated parent tended to have faster larval development than the control cross, although not all were significantly different from controls. However, when either or both parents were ablated and regenerated, their daughters were heavier than controls at emergence. Limb regeneration during pupation appears to activate a physiological cascade which increases the magnitude of beneficial parental effects normally conferred to progeny, possibly via pleiotropic effects. The invasive North American H. axyridis population appears to have higher regeneration capacity than the Chinese population tested previously, although how regeneration capacity might be associated with invasiveness remains unclear. Limb regeneration ability may be a side effect of selection on other traits that confer high fitness under either natural or sexual selection, as it seems unlikely to confer fitness benefits directly in this species. Nonconsumptive effects of predators on prey are well known, but similar effects among competing predators are not. Aphidophagous insect larvae are notorious for cannibalism and intraguild predation, as they compete for aggregated but ephemeral prey. We tested for indirect effects of competitors on the development of Coleomegilla maculata DeGeer and Hippodamia convergens Guerin-Meneville (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), and a green lacewing, Chrysoperla carnea Stephens (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae), with all larvae reared on eggs of Ephestia kuehniella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). Control larvae were reared singly, while treatment larvae were reared pairwise, with either a conspecific or heterospecific, in partitioned Petri dishes that allowed the passage of chemical cues. Larvae of C. maculata, a dietary generalist, appeared stressed by the presence of competing larvae, whether con- or heterospecific, and suffered fitness costs (longer pupation times, lower male adult mass). In contrast, H. convergens and C. carnea, both aphid specialists, responded to competing larvae with accelerated development, and without any apparent costs in terms of adult size or reproductive performance. Adult C. carnea in some treatments were heavier than solitary controls, suggesting a higher consumption rate by the induced phenotype, and those exposed to H. convergens began oviposition earlier. Thus, the phenotypes induced in the specialized aphid predators were adaptive for development in aphid colonies, whereas that induced in the generalist was not. These results indicate that nonconsumptive effects are not simply a vertical force acting on prey, but can also impact conspecific and heterospecific competitors on the same trophic level. Many species of lady beetles are highly promiscuous and females mate repeatedly even when not sperm-limited. We quantified female reproductive success and progeny development in Hippodamia convergens using a laboratory experiment designed to test whether (1) male novelty (different males), (2) male mating status (virgin, non-virgin) or (3) opportunities for female mate choice, would increase female fitness compared to a similar number of matings with the same male. Daily access to novel males, regardless of their mating status, increased the egg fertility of females, but not their fecundity. Opportunities for mate choice did not improve any measure of female reproductive success compared to arbitrary assignment of males, but slightly increased reproductive rate, as measured by the number of days to produce 15 clutches. The eggs of monogamous females had the fastest eclosion times, but larval development was fastest for progeny of females polyandrous with non-virgin males, and total developmental time did not differ among treatments. In a second experiment, confinement with two males during oviposition disrupted egg clustering and reduced egg fertility, but not female fecundity, relative to confinement with one male or oviposition in solitude, suggesting a negative impact of male harassment on female fitness in the presence of multiple males. However, the continued presence of two males also improved progeny survival and reduced progeny development time relative to female confinement with one, likely due to summation of paternal effects when females were allowed unlimited matings with both males. These results do not rule out genetic benefits of polyandry, but support the view that enhanced egg fertility is a primary benefit, and suggest more subtle benefits may be obtained in the form of additive paternal effects. A laboratory study was conducted to examine tritrophic effects on the suitability of the peach-potato aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer), and tobacco aphid, Myzus persicae nicotianae (Blackman & Eastop), as prey for the two spot ladybird, Adalia bipunctata (L.), when the aphids were reared on either sweet pepper or tobacco. Significant host plant-aphid interactions were evident for every component of development (juvenile survival, developmental time, adult mass at emergence) and reproduction (preoviposition period, fecundity, fertility). By almost all measures, the suitability of each aphid species was improved by rearing on its host plant of origin and diminished by rearing on the alternative host plant. The symmetry of the interactions are suggestive of both positive and negative host plant effects on aphid suitability as prey. Whereas M. p. nicotianae may be better able than M. persicae to detoxify the nicotine that is likely responsible for the reduced suitability of M. persicae when reared on tobacco, it appears to have lower nutritive value for A. bipunctata than M. persicae when reared on pepper. Thus, population parameters (R0, rm, λ and DT) derived from performance data indicated that M. persicae reared on sweet pepper was the most suitable prey and that the same species reared on tobacco was the least suitable, with other host plant-aphid combinations intermediate. We examined reciprocal intraguild predation (IGP) and cannibalism among various combinations of Coleomegilla maculata DeGeer and Chrysoperla carnea Stephens larvae as they developed feeding on greenbugs, Schizaphis graminum Rondani, on sorghum plants in microcosms. Pairs of C. maculata larvae suppressed aphids better than pairs of C. carnea larvae or heterospecific larval pairs and yielded the highest rate of plant survival. IGP by C. carnea larvae occurred mostly in the first instar, whereas C. maculata larvae were more aggressive in later instars. Although C. carnea was the superior intraguild predator, winning 62.7% of contests in microcosms, this value increased to 88.9% when the experiment was repeated in petri dishes without plant material, regardless of whether greenbugs or eggs of Ephestia kuehniella Zeller were offered as focal prey. Provision in petri dishes of the sessile, higher quality prey (Ephestia) as opposed to greenbugs, improved the survival of solitary larvae and delayed cannibalism and IGP until later developmental stages in both species. Larvae of C. maculata that cannibalized took longer to develop and weighed less at pupation, independent of the arena or prey offered. Although larvae of C. carnea did not pay a cost for cannibalism or IGP in microcosms, there were some negative developmental effects of IGP in petri dishes, particularly on the Ephestia diet. These results illustrate how the plant, as a substrate, can mediate the strength of IGP interactions and how the relative suitability of the focal prey can influence both the timing and consequences of cannibalism and IGP. Harmonia axyridis has become notorious as an urban pest in many of the regions where it has been introduced, despite its numerous contributions to the biological control of insects injurious to agriculture and horticulture. Aggregative behavior prior to overwintering leads to invasions of human habitations as beetles seek refuge from freezing temperatures. Here we describe the aggregation behavior of native H. axyridis populations of northeast China that breed in agricultural fields (mostly corn and rice) and shrub/forest habitats and then migrate through rural villages in autumn. More than 140,000 beetles were collected during direct observations in 16 villages in five townships in Jilin Province. Beetles aggregated on dwellings shortly after agricultural harvests, favoring white walls with southern exposures, the largest aggregations occurring in villages in mountainous townships at higher elevations. The sex ratio was consistently female-biased and succinic phenotypes were more than twice as abundant as melanic phenotypes in all locations. A special trap compared the relative attractiveness of different surface colors (white > yellow = black > green > red = natural wood) and potential baits (corn pollen = honey > caramel = cocoa > milk = blank control). All aggregations disappeared abruptly just prior to the first frost, whereupon beetles were discovered sheltering in montane caves with southern aspects at higher elevations. Villagers reported substantial expenditures on pesticides in efforts to eliminate beetles from their homes every autumn. Invasion of human habitations appears to be an intrinsic tendency of native H. axyridis populations in China, which is the result of behavioral adaptations for cold-avoidance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

1. We observed native populations of Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) around Beijing, China, over 2 years and performed choice and no-choice mating tests between melanic and succinic (non-melanic) beetles in the laboratory. 2. Succinic phenotypes outnumbered melanics by 5:1 in autumn, but melanics became equally abundant in spring, supporting previous inferences that melanism is advantageous in winter, but costly in summer. 3. Female H. axyridis expressed mate preference overtly, by rejecting less-preferred phenotypes, and cryptically, by retaining their eggs for longer periods after matings with less-preferred males, ostensibly to replace their sperm. 4. Succinic pairs formed more quickly in the spring generation, and melanic pairs in the autumn, and the time to copula was affected by both male and female phenotype. The strength of mate preference was contingent on female phenotype, suggesting melanic alleles had pleiotropic effects. 5. Whereas pair formation was under female control, the duration of copula was under male control and lasted longer in the autumn generation than in the spring. Copulations in the choice test tended to be shorter between similar phenotypes, suggesting that males invested more in dissimilar females when alternative mates were available. 6. Although spring and autumn generations were raised under identical conditions, significant contrasts were observed in their reproductive behaviour. 7. Two alternative hypotheses are advanced to explain why gender-specific reproductive behaviours might vary between generations: maternally-mediated epigenetic factors that influence the expression of genes in progeny as a function of maternal environment, and linkage disequilibria among alleles that cycle in frequency seasonally as a function of assortative mating. We investigated the life history consequences of changes in diet between larval and adult life stages in the polyphagous lady beetle Coleomegilla maculata DeGeer (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). Beetles were reared on three larval diets: greenbug, Schizaphis graminum Rondani (Homoptera: Aphididae), eggs of the flour moth, Ephestia kuehniella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), and bee pollen. The reproductive performance of females was then evaluated on an adult diet of either greenbug or moth eggs. Moth eggs appeared to be the most suitable diet for larvae, yielding the largest adults, and pollen the least suitable, resulting in the smallest adults and greatly extended developmental time. Pollen-reared beetles tended to have lower fecundity and fertility than those reared on animal protein, regardless of adult diet. Female fitness was generally increased by a change in diet upon emergence to the alternative source of animal protein, suggesting that dietary complementation occurred across life stages. Among females reared on greenbug, a change of diet to moth eggs reduced the period required for production of 12 clutches and increased egg fertility compared to continued feeding on greenbug. Among females reared on moth eggs, a change of diet to greenbug increased fecundity compared to continued feeding on moth eggs. Among females fed an adult diet of greenbug, those fed moth eggs as larvae had faster production of 12 clutches and higher fecundity. We discuss these novel results in the context of coccinellid life history and ecology and their potential implications for other insects that are predatory as both larvae and adults. Factors were examined that could be responsible for the predominance of Coccinella septempunctata (C7) in most habitats of the Palaearctic and for its successful invasion of the Nearctic Region. C7 is euryphagous, but less polyphagous than Harmonia axyridis or Coleomegilla maculata in that it cannot develop or reproduce on non-aphid food. The intraguild status of C7 is intermediate. Although adult size is large, preimaginal stages are palatable to those of H. axyridis and Adalia bipunctata, whereas it is not an intraguild predator of these species. Although these traits appear to be neutral or negative, many aspects of population plasticity are advantageous for C7, often acting in concert with a bet-hedging strategy. Given its high mobility and eurytopy, the inhibition of oviposition in the presence of conspecific larval trails represents an adaptive advantage that favors increased egg dispersal and lowers the risk of offspring mortality due to cannibalism. The ability to temporarily suspend oviposition, combined with heterogenous voltinism and diapause tendencies, enable a portion of C7 populations to feed and reproduce on unpredictably occurring aphid populations. An absence of reproductive diapause in males and pre-hibernation mating are other significant adaptations, along with the tendency to produce offspring in excess of the carrying capacity of local food resources. We suggest that one explanation for the broad geographic success of C7 resides in an ecological plasticity that is based on both genetic and phenotypic polymorphisms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We examined oviposition decisions by Hippodamia convergens Guérin in semi-natural arenas in the laboratory. Gravid females were presented individually with an array of four young sorghum plants, Sorghum bicolor, bearing (1) no additional stimulus, (2) an established colony of greenbug, Schizaphis graminum Rondani, (3) residues of conspecific larvae, and (4) greenbugs plus residues of conspecific larvae. Females laid no egg masses on type 3 plants, significantly fewer than expected by chance on type 4 plants, and significantly more on type 1 plants, with type 2 plants receiving expected numbers. Females laid 50% of egg masses on elements of the arena other than the plants, especially the cage screen, suggesting that females sought to distance their eggs farther from larval residues than the spacing of plants in the arena permitted (15 cm). When the experiment was repeated with plants exposed to larvae of Coleomegilla maculata DeGeer, the repellency was weaker. Once again, clean plants were the most preferred and aphids did not increase the acceptability of plants with larval residues. Nevertheless, only 18% of egg masses occurred off the plants and larval residues did not reduce the acceptability of aphid-bearing plants as did conspecific larval residues. Simultaneous choice tests conducted with individual third instars of both species revealed that C. maculata larvae consumed H. convergens eggs as readily as conspecific eggs, but H. convergens larvae preferred conspecific eggs to those of C. maculata. Summary1. A field study was conducted in which colonies of Toxoptera citricida (Kirkaldy) were initiated with different numbers of foundresses on ungrafted citrus trees var. ‘Carrizo’ within an existing citrus grove in central Florida. 2. The growth rate, longevity, and final size of T. citricida colonies were all positively correlated with number of foundresses. 3. Colonies initiated by many foundresses produced alatae earlier than those initiated by fewer foundresses. 4. Nymphal developmental time was reduced in colonies initiated by more foundresses but the mean number of grand-progeny per foundress was lower when only surviving colonies were compared. 5. The longevity of foundresses was unaffected by their number but foundress fecundity and nymphal survival decreased as foundress number increased. 6. The most abundant natural enemies were Diptera: Syrphidae, primarily Pseudodorus clavatus (F.), and Chamaemiidae (Leucopis sp.), followed by Coleoptera: Coccinellidae, primarily Cycloneda sanguinea (L). 7. Cocccinellid beetles are largely diurnal species that are known to utilize visual cues in foraging and reproduction and to respond in specific ways to various light conditions. The present study evaluated the mating behavior and reproductive performance of Propylea japonica (Thunberg), a species indigenous to Asia, under various conditions of light intensity, photoperiod, and wavelength. Video-recording was used to continuously observe mating pairs for 24 h and a night vision system was employed to record nocturnal activity. Subsequently, males were removed and eggs were collected from females for 10 days and held under the same photic conditions to determine their fertility. The frequency and duration of copula varied among photic regimes in all experiments and tended to be negatively correlated, but more copulations occurred in photophase than in scotophase. White light at 1500 lux yielded higher egg production when compared to other light intensities, but egg fertility was higher at lower light intensities and highest in complete darkness, a result inferred to reflect egg sensitivity to light. Both fecundity and fertility were greater when 1500 lux white light was provided in a 16L, 8D photoperiod compared to shorter days. Green light yielded the highest net fertility compared to other wavelengths. A scheme is proposed to optimize photic conditions for reproductive adults of P. japonica and their eggs in colonies mass-reared for biological control applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
