Abstract

The article contends that unrealistic expectations fueled by religious enthusiasm have contributed to the mine tragedy in Sago, West Virginia. Another tragedy that ensued involves incorrect reporting of rescued and alive coal miners retrieved from the mine. The twin tragedies can be attributed to religious faith that enveloped the victims, friends and relatives, public officials, rescue personnel and, of course, the news media.
