Zone model predictive control has proven to be an effective closed-loop method to regulate blood glucose for people with type 1 diabetes (T1D). In this paper, we present a universal model-free optimization scheme for adapting the zone for T1D patients individually. The adaptation is based on a clinical glycemic risk index named relative regularized glycemic penalty index (rrGPI), which is calculated from glucose measurements by a continuous glucose monitor. The scheme's objective is to minimize rrGPI by simultaneously modulating a controller's blood glucose target zone's upper bound and lower bound. The adaptation mechanism is based on extremum seeking control, in which the zone boundaries are driven by gradient estimation obtained by continuously sinusoidally modulating and demodulating the rrGPI readings. To improve the adaptation method's robustness against uncertainties, a decaying feedback gain and a vanishing dither signal are employed. in-silico trials suggested that the personalized optimized zone can be reached within a week of adaptation. Both for announced and unannounced meals, the proposed method outperforms the fixed zone [80, 140] mg/dL, which has been employed in the authors’ clinical trials. It is of great importance to develop an online modeling method for chemical processes operated in closed loop for better understanding, monitoring the process or other purposes without endangering the system. This paper intends to devise an online system identification method, particularly for the batch process, by fully exploiting its intrinsic repetitiveness. It properly uses the information from the time direction and the batch direction, thus leading to a gradual performance enhancement. In addition, the identification method formulates the priori controller knowledge such as closed-loop stability as optimization constraints to refine the parameter estimates. A trust region method is employed to overcome the significant computation burden of directly handling these constraints such as solving Lyapunov inequalities. An adaptive filter is introduced to further smooth the parameter estimates. Finally, the effectiveness of the approach is verified by three numerical examples including a two-tank system. In this study, a predictive-p control system is developed for the level process in an industrial coke fractionation tower. Such processes typically have integrating and nonlinear dynamics causing the performance of conventional control designs and tuning to be poor or to require significant effort in practice. The process model is derived using data of step-response test and control implementation is designed through a new state-space structure. The closed-loop control system contains both the improved predictive control and P control. The performance of the proposed control for regulatory/servo, disturbance rejection, and measurement noise problems are studied and the obtained results show that the control system is of simple implementation with more robustness and provides better responses than conventional predictive control. In view of the performance deterioration of conventional model predictive control strategies under model/plant mismatches, this study first proposes an improved linear quadratic regulation control (LQR) strategy and then tests it on the oxygen content in an industrial coke furnace. The control system design consists of two steps. Based on the direct use of the measured input and output variables and the formulation of output error, a state space model is first developed. Then, by incorporating the dynamics of process states into the cost function of the controller design, a new LQR is proposed to obtain an improved performance for closed‐loop control systems. Comparisons with conventional state space model predictive control are also given in terms of both regulatory and servo performance.
