Purpose: The patient perception of study medication (PPSM) questionnaire consists of 12 questions designed to quantify patient satisfaction with the efficacy of study treatment by focusing on specific changes that patients experience during the study period. This study aimed to develop a Korean version of the PPSM questionnaire.Methods: The linguistic validation process consisted of obtaining permission for translation, forward translation, reconciliation, backward translation, cognitive debriefing, and proofreading. Two independent bilingual translators translated the original version of the questionnaire, and a panel discussed and combined the 2 versions. Another independent translator performed backward translation of the reconciled version, after which 15 patients underwent the cognitive debriefing.Results: The 12 questions and 4 response scales of the PPSM questionnaire were forward translated into 2 Korean versions. The terms were adjusted to conceptually equivalent expressions in Korean. After backward translation, the panel made minor changes to the forward translations for brevity and better readability. No difficulties were experienced during cognitive debriefing by 15 patients, and all items were reported to be generally easy to understand.Conclusions: The Korean version of the PPSM questionnaire has been successfully translated and validated. The questionnaire is appropriate for assessing symptom satisfaction in patients that undergo benign prostatic hyperplasia pharmacotherapy.

Research in Asian cultures regarding the association between employment status and health has been limited. The current study investigated the association between depression and employment status in Korea, moderated by gender.Data from the 2014, 2016, and 2018 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) were analysed. In total, 11,157 participants aged ≥ 19 years responded to the survey. The Korean version of the PHQ-9 was utilised in addition to questions assessing employment status.Precarious employment indicated a greater prevalence of depression in comparison to permanent employment (14.9% vs 10.8%, p0.001; 22.6% vs 20.2%, p0.001). Precariously employed men were 1.40 times more likely to have depression (adjusted Odds Ratio (OR): 1.40; 95% Confidence Interval (CI): 1.15-1.70; p= 0.001) while no such association existed among women (adjusted OR: 1.06; 95% CI: 0.89-1.27; p= 0.493). The subgroup analyses revealed that men working day shifts in a precarious employment were 1.48 times more likely to be depressed than those with permanent employment. In contrast, precarious employed women working night shifts were 2.13 times more likely to be depressed than those permanently employed counterparts.Current research did not investigate the causality of the variables hence was unable to identify whether employment instability from precarious engagements preceded the onset of depression.These findings suggest gender can independently modify the relationship between employment stability and depression, as well as in association with additional variables - including work shift type and income.

Background Burnout syndrome (BOS) is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. This study aims to create the Korean version burnout syndrome scale (KBOSS) that conforms to WHO’s definition of BOS and present the cut-off points for screening. Methods We developed the KBOSS based on WHO’s definition of BOS. An online survey was conducted through a specialized online research company. We recruited 444 workers for this research. The validity of the KBOSS was assessed using factor analysis and Pearson’s correlation. The KBOSS reliability was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. The cut-off points for each of the three dimensions were derived using the upper quartile score. Results The validity and reliability of the KBOSS were good. Regarding reliability, the scale’s overall Cronbach’s alpha was 0.813. Cronbach’s alpha of each three-dimension was as follows: exhaustion, 0.916; cynicism, 0.865; and professional inefficacy, 0.819. The cut-off points of BOS three dimensions are exhaustion ≧ 21; cynicism ≧ 18; and inefficacy ≧ 15. Conclusion The developed questionnaire (KBOSS) can be a useful tool for screening of BOS.

Background: Depression and anxiety are prevalent and can cause suffering in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD). The Korean version of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (K-HADS) has been widely used to assess depression and anxiety symptoms in Korean patient with PD. The present study aimed to assess the reliability and validity of the K-HADS using Rasch measurement analysis.Methods: A total of 106 PD patients (54 males, 52 females) who met the diagnostic criteria of the United Kingdom Brain Bank were recruited. Unidimensionality, the Rasch model fit, response category functioning, patient-item distribution, and the separation reliability of the K-HADS depression (K-HADS-D) and anxiety (K-HADS-A) subscales were statistically evaluated.Results: The mean K-HADS-D and K-HADS-A scores were 8.08±4.69 (mean±standard deviation) and 5.44±4.18, respectively. Cronbach’s α coefficients of the K-HADS-D and K-HADS-A were 0.82 and 0.83. The Rasch analysis revealed that the K-HADS-D and K-HADS-A showed unidimensionality and no disordered functioning was observed in the 4-point polytomous scale. However, both K-HADS-D and K-HADS-A exhibited suboptimal separation reliability, while the K-HADS-A showed inadequate scale targeting with floor effect.Conclusions: The present study comprises the first validation of the K-HADS using the Rasch measurement model, suggesting that the K-HADS-D and K-HADS-A are clinimetrically acceptable and reliable scales for use in Korean patients with PD. However, the moderate person separation indices implicate the relatively low discriminatory ability of the K-HADS in our study patients.

Background: Frailty, one of serious global health problems in the elderly, is a growing concern in patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) because of its high prevalence in AD and its impact on the prognosis. Objective: To investigate the quantitative association between white matter hyperintensities (WMH) and frailty in AD. Methods: A total of 144 outpatients were included. All subjects were evaluated by using Korean version of the CERAD assessment battery and diagnosed very mild to moderate AD. WMH volume was calculated using automated segmentation analysis from the 3D MRI image and further partitioned according to the distance from the ventricular surface. Using the Korean Frailty Index, prefrailty was defined by the scores of 3 and 4 and frailty by the score of 5 and higher. Results: In total, 23.6%were frailty, 32.6%were pre-frailty, and 43.8%were classified as a robust group. The frailty group had higher WMH volume compared to the robust group (p = 0.02), and these trends remained significant after linear regression analyses. According to the subclassification of WMH, using the robust group as a reference, total WMH (OR = 6.297, p = 0.013, 95%CI = 1.463–27.114), juxtaventricular WMH (OR = 12.955, p = 0.014, 95%CI = 1.687–99.509), and periventricular WMH (OR = 3.382, p = 0.025, 95%CI = 1.163–9.8531) volumes were associated with frailty, but deep WMH volume was not. Conclusions: A quarter of patients with very mild to moderate AD is suffering from frailty. Our study provides the evidence of a cross-sectional relationship between WMH volume and frailty, and there is a difference in the association between the subclassification of WMH volume and frailty.

In this study, we defined obsessive thoughts (OT) as bothersome, unpleasant thoughts about oneself that keep entering the mind against one's will, and compulsive behavior (CB) as behavior that a person repeats against his or her wishes. The study included 12,532 adults selected randomly through a one-person-per-household method. Each subject selected underwent a face-to-face interview using the Korean version of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview with a questionnaire that examines lifetime suicide attempts (LSAs). Among the participants, 341 (2.74%) had OT and 639 (5.14%) had CB. The highest LSA rate was in subjects with both OT and CB, followed by those with either OT or CB; subjects with neither OT nor CB had the lowest LSA rate. In a multivariate logistic regression analysis of OT and CB, OT, ordering, and rituals of repeating words were significantly associated with LSAs. In subjects with OT and CB, those with MDD had a significantly higher risk of LSAs compared with those without, and MDD with both OT and CB showed odds of approximately 27-fold (adjusted odds ratio, 27.24; 13.29-55.82; p < 0.0001) compared with those without MDD, OT, or CB. OT and CB were associated with increased risk of LSAs, and comorbid MDD further increased LSAs.

Purpose Recently, studies associated with the negative physical and mental effects of athletes’ pain have received extensive attention. This study confirmed the validity of the pain catastrophizing scale (PCS) developed in clinical settings and is widely used in the sports field, and examined their relationship between the perceived stress levels and fear of pain.Methods The pain catastrophizing consisted of 13 items of three factors which are Helplessness (6 items), Rumination(4 items), Magnification(3 items). To verify the validity, PSC was revised by following the recommended revision guideline procedures. To test the validation of pain catastrophizing, 206 adult athletes were recruited including the collegiate, professional, and national levels. The participants were instructed to complete questionnaires to assess the level of pain catastrophizing, perceived stress, and fear of pain. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to test the fit of measurement model was adopted to examine three higher-order three-factor measurement models.Results In results, confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the Korean version of the pain catastrophizing scale demonstrated a good model fit of measurement when removing one item with a significantly lower factor load as well as the reliability of the scale was reasonable. The pain catastrophizing had a meaningful positive direct relation with perceived stress level and fear of severe pain. In addition, construct validity and predictive validity of PCS showed valid.Conclusions Based on the results of this study, the Korean sports pain catastrophizing scale can be used to measure the subjective pain intensity of Korean athletes. In addition, it is expected to provide fundamental information for evaluating athletes’ post-injury rehabilitation processes.

Background: Depression is prevalent among teachers, particularly those in early childhood education. Thus, their depressive symptoms’ accurate assessment is important in both research and practice, and, for this purpose, the nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) has shown considerable promise in depression screening and diagnosis. Although the PHQ-9 has been widely employed in both clinical and nonclinical settings, its validity among early childhood teachers in Korea is questionable, and its dimensionality remains controversial. This study’s purposes were thus to provide data on the factorial structure and psychometric properties of the PHQ-9’s Korean version and to investigate associations between the PHQ-9 and a corresponding psychiatric instrument, the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II). Methods: For this study, 252 early childhood teachers completed both the PHQ-9’s Korean version and the BDI-II. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to compare goodness-of-fit for four distinct factor models suggested by extant literature. Convergent validity was assessed by examining correlations between the PHQ-9 and the BDI-II. Results: A two-factor model with three items labeled “somatic” and six labeled “affective” provided the best fit. The scale’s convergent validity was supported by significant correlations with theoretically related measures, and its internal consistency was adequate. Conclusion: Overall, the results suggest that the PHQ-9’s Korean version is best conceptualized as a multidimensional measure of depression and confirms the PHQ-9 as a reliable assessment of depression among Korean early childhood teachers.

Objective The Thought-Action Fusion Scale (TAFS) is a self-reported instrument used to measure a cognitive bias, namely, thoughtaction fusion (TAF), in which intrusive thoughts have moral and actual consequences. The aim of this study is to investigate the reliability and validity of the Korean version of the 19-item TAFS (K-TAFS) in Korean samples.Methods In this study, 628 university students and 93 patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) completed the K-TAFS and several other psychological scales. Descriptive analyses, correlations, group comparisons, and exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were performed.Results The results of the exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses indicated a two-factor structure with TAF-Morality and TAFLikelihood that best fits the data in the university sample. The reliability analyses showed that TAFS and its factors had excellent internal consistencies. Regarding the concurrent validity, positive correlations were observed between TAF-Likelihood and cognitive fusion, while the TAFS scores did not show any consistent correlations with other symptoms such as depression and anxiety. Compared to the university students, the OCD patients showed higher TAFS scores and their obsessive-compulsive symptoms were significantly associated with both TAF-Morality and TAF-Likelihood.Conclusion Overall, the findings of this study support the reliability and validity of the K-TAFS.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine psychometric properties of the Disturbing Dream and Nightmare Severity Index (DDNSI) in individuals aged between 18 and 39. METHODS: All participants (n = 674) were asked to complete the DDNSI, including the modified Nightmare Effects Survey. Additionally, 109 participants were tested for test-retest reliability after 3 months. Among our sample, 229 (33.9%) reported having at least 1 nightmare per month. RESULTS: Internal consistency was evaluated for the total sample (Cronbach’s α = .920) and separately for individuals reporting more than once per month (Cronbach’s α = .755). Test-retest reliability after 3 months was .705. Convergent validity of the DDNSI with Nightmare Effects Survey was also satisfactory (r = .638, P < .001). Finally, exploratory factor analysis was conducted to explore the construct of the DDNSI, and results indicated that it consisted of 2 factors, nightmare frequency and nightmare distress [χ(2)(df) = 2.241(1) ∆χ(2) (∆df) = 155.575(4), Tucker-Lewis incremental fit index = .980, root mean square error of approximation (90% confidence interval) = .074 (0, .208), standardized root-mean-square residual = .011]. Objective This study aimed to examine the validity of the Korean version of the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (K-ADI-R) and determine its efficacy in identifying individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).Methods Data were pooled from several past and ongoing studies as well as clinical records acquired at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital from 2008 to 2017. The K-ADI-R were administered and scored by trained research reliable examiners. Measurements to investigate the validity of the K-ADI-R was through sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive values (PPV), negative predictive values (NPV), and Cohen’s kappa.Results A total of 1,271 (age 88.9±62.42 months, male=927) participants were included. The K-ADI-R yielded strong psychometric properties with high sensitivity (86.06–99.27%), specificity (84.75–99.55%), PPV (92.33–99.72%), and NPV (79.43–98.64%). Objective There is currently no structured interview tool developed that comprehensively evaluates self-injurious thoughts and behaviors (SITB) in Korea. The Self-injurious Thoughts and Behaviors Interview (SITBI) collectively measures suicidal ideation, plans, gestures, attempts, and non-suicidal self-injuries (NSSI). The SITBI’s reliability and validity have been established with it being widely used in English speaking countries. This study evaluated the psychometric validity of the Korean version of the SITBI (SITBI-K).Methods The SITBI’s validity as a diagnostic assessment tool for NSSI and suicidal behavior disorder (SBD), as defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-5th edition, was examined. Analyses were performed on 108 university students reporting experiences of suicidal thoughts and behaviors (female 84.26%, mean age=22.10, ±SD 3.33).Results The SITBI-K displayed excellent interrater reliability, with a credible test-retest reliability at two months. Construct validity examined the correlation between the SITBI-K’s modules and approved the self-report results. Appropriate convergent and discriminant validities were obtained for suicidal ideation, plans, gestures, attempts, and NSSI.Conclusion The SITBI-K showed excellent psychometric validity at a level comparable to the original. Its clinical utility for both NSSI and SBD diagnoses was confirmed.

This study investigated the association between parental age at birth and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms in their children. A total of 30,552 children aged 6–12 years participated in the study. ADHD symptoms were rated using the Korean version of the ADHD Rating Scale (K-ARS) by parents. K-ARS scores and odds ratio (OR) for children with high-risk ADHD presented a U-shape curve depending on the age of both parents at birth. The total K-ARS scores and OR for high-risk ADHD were highest in children of fathers and mothers belonging to the youngest age group (aged ≤20) (K-ARS = 12.33, OR = 2.89 vs K-ARS = 10.98, OR = 2.63) and second highest in children whose father's or mother's age at birth was the oldest (K-ARS = 9.63, OR = 1.65 vs K-ARS = 9.95, OR = 1.95). Our study identified that both spectrums of age—young and old of either parent—were associated with ADHD in children. These are new findings considering that old age of parents as the correlates of offspring ADHD is the inconsistent finding with previous studies and warrant future studies in other cultures that include more detailed information on ADHD symptoms of children and their parents are needed to confirm the present findings.

Purpose: Because there are no new and validated tools that assess knowledge of kidney transplant (KT), we aimed to construct the Korean version of the Kidney Transplant Understanding Tool (K-TUT) and to validate it. Methods: The Korean version of the K-TUT was established based on a translation and cultural adaptation process. A total of 69 items were reviewed by eight experts in KT for content validity, and a quantitative analysis was used to assess convergent and criterion validity (correlation coefficients), internal consistency (Kuder-Richardson 20, KR-20), test–retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient, ICC), item difficulty, and item discrimination for 29 KT candidates and 91 KT recipients. Results: The content validity of the Korean version of the K-TUT proved to be excellent as all items; the scale-level content validity index (S-CVI) in universal average was .86 and the S-CVI in average was .98. 여성에 대한 태도가 양가적인 속성(적대적인 태도와 온정적인 태도)을 지니는 것처럼, 남성에 대한 태도도 양가적인 속성을 보이는 것으로 알려져 있다. 최근 한국 사회에서 여성혐오대 남성혐오로 인한 성별 갈등이 심화되고 있지만, 대부분의 국내 연구들은 여성에 대한 태도에만 초점을 맞추고 있어, 남성에 대한 양가적 태도를 측정하는 국내 척도가 부재한 실정이다. 이에, 본 연구에서는 미국에서 개발되어 사용되고 있는 ‘남성에 대한 양가적 태도 척도’(The Ambivalence toward Men Inventory: AMI)를 한국어로 번안 및 타당화하였다. 이를 위해, 연구 표본 1(대학생 183명), 연구 표본 2(대학생 300명), 연구 표본 3(성인 317명)을 대상으로 탐색적 및 확인적 요인 분석을 실시하였고, 그 결과, 2개의 하위요인(남성에 대한 적대적인 태도, 남성에 대한 온정적인 태도), 16문항이 적절한 것으로 나타났다. 또한 수렴타당도와 준거타당도를 확인한 결과, 한국어판 남성에 대한 양가적 태도 척도(The Korean Version of the Ambivalence toward Men Inventory: K-AMI)는 한국인에게 사용하기에 타당한 도구로 확인되었다. K-AMI의 내적합치도도 .830∼.917로 양호한 것으로 나타났다.

The study was conducted to analyze the data from 117 firefighters aged 39.01±9.17 to find out the effect of post-traumatic stress symptoms and calling on their job satisfaction level. The three elements in IES-R, hyperarousal, avoidance and intrusion, were used to measure the level of post-traumatic stress, along with the Korean version of multidimensional calling measure (MCM-K). The results show that 35% of them were classified as a high-risk group of post-traumatic stress symptoms and the old group over 50 years of age had the highest level of post-traumatic stress. A significant negative correlation was found between job satisfaction and post-traumatic stress symptoms, while there was a positive correlation between job satisfaction level and calling. Statitistically significant covariates in the multiple regression model included educational background and working period of firefighters.

Background This study was to assess the validity of the Korean version of the semi-structured Diagnostic Interview for Adult ADHD, third edition (DIVA-5). The secondary aim was to compare sociodemographic and psychiatric comorbidities in adult patients with and without a diagnosis of ADHD. Methods A total of 279 participants were recruited from nine psychiatric outpatient clinics in Korea. All participants were administered the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) Plus v.5.0.0, the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale v1.1 (ASRS-v1.1) Symptom Checklist, and DIVA-5. Diagnosis concordance between two board-certified psychiatrists and DIVA-5 were analysed. Results The DIVA-5 showed a diagnostic accuracy of 92%, a sensitivity of 91.30%, and a specificity of 93.62%. Significant clinical and demographic differences between ADHD and control groups were found. Conclusion The Korean version of DIVA-5 is a reliable tool for assessing and diagnosing ADHD in adult Korean populations.

본 연구에서는 자기결정이론의 기본 심리적 욕구를 기반으로 한 욕구-지지적인 대인관계 행동과 욕구-좌절적인 대인관계 행동을 측정하는 척도인 대인관계 행동 척도(Interpersonal Behaviours Questionnaire; IBQ)를 한국어로 번안 및 타당화하고자 하였다. IBQ는 자율성-지지 행동, 유능감-지지 행동, 관계성-지지 행동 그리고 자율성-좌절 행동, 유능감-좌절 행동, 관계성-좌절 행동에 대한 지각을 평가하기 위해 개발된 척도이다. 총 505명의 대학생과 대학원생을 대상으로 설문조사를 통해 자료를 수집하였고, 탐색적 요인분석과 확인적 요인분석을 실시하였다. 그 결과 원척도와 동일하게 문항제거 없이 한국판 IBQ는 4문항씩 6요인으로 총 24문항으로 구성되는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 타당도 및 신뢰도를 확인한 결과, IBQ는 한국인에게 사용하기에 신뢰할 수 있고 타당한 도구인 것으로 확인되었다. 욕구-지지적인 행동은 행복관련 지표와 욕구-좌절적인 행동은 불행 관련 지표와 유의한 상관이 있는 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로, 본 연구의 결과를 바탕으로 연구의 의의와 제한점 그리고 추후 연구 제언을 논의하였다.

This study aimed to explore the factor structure, reliability, and validity of a Korean translation of the Parental Reflective Functioning Questionnaire (PRFQ). The PRFQ consists of three subscales: prementalizing modes, certainty about mental states, and interest and curiosity in mental states. A convenience sample of 163 Korean parents completed the K-PRFQ. Exploratory factor analysis showed three factors mapped on to the original PRFQ factors, but items from the original prementalizing modes subscale clustered into two additional factors. Data from a subsample (n = 67) showed that the certainty about mental states and interest and curiosity in mental states subscales correlated positively with more optimal self-reported parenting. We discuss the validity of using the PRFQ in collectivistic cultures.Este estudio se propuso explorar la estructura de factores, la confiabilidad y la validez de una traducción al coreano del Cuestionario de Funcionamiento de Reflexión del Progenitor (PRFO; Luyten, Mayes, Nijssens y Fonagy, 2017). El PRFQ consiste en tres escalas: Modos de Pre-mentalización, la Certeza acerca de estados mentales y el Interés y curiosidad por los estados mentales. Un conveniente grupo muestra de 163 progenitores coreanos completó el K-PRFQ. Los exploratorios análisis de factores mostraron tres factores identificados dentro de los factores del PRFQ original, sin embargo, temas de la sub-escala original de Modos de Pre-mentalización se agruparon en dos factores adicionales. Los datos provenientes de un sub-grupo muestra (n = 67) mostraron que la Certeza acerca de estados mentales y el Interés y curiosidad por los estados mentales se correlacionaron positivamente con una auto-reportada más óptima crianza. Une analyse exploratoire de facteur a montré trois facteurs mappés sur les facteurs d'origine du PRFQl, mais des aspects de la sous-échelle des modes de pré-mentalisation se sont regroupés en deux facteurs de plus. Les données d'un sous-échantillon (n = 67) ont montré que la Certitude sur les états mentaux et les sous-échelles d'Intérêt et la curiosité dans les états mentaux étaient en corrélation positive avec un parentage auto-rapporté optimal. Der PRFQ besteht aus drei Subskalen: „Prämentalisierungsmodi“, „Gewissheit über mentale Zustände“ sowie „Interesse und Neugier an mentalen Zuständen“. Eine anfallende Stichprobe von 163 koreanischen Eltern füllten den K-PRFQ aus. Die explorative Faktorenanalyse ergab drei Faktoren, die die ursprünglichen PRFQ-Faktoren abbildeten, aber außerdem gruppierten sich Elemente aus der ursprünglichen „Prämentalisierungsmodi“-Subskala in zwei zusätzliche Faktoren. Daten aus einer Teilstichprobe (n = 67) zeigten, dass die Subskalen „Gewissheit über mentale Zustände“ sowie „Interesse und Neugier in mentalen Zuständen“ positiv mit einer optimaleren selbstberichteten Elternkompetent korrelierten. Objective This study aimed to identify communication preferences for receiving a cancer diagnosis in South Korean patients and explore differences depending on cancer stage-with or without recurrence/metastasis. Methods A total of 312 patients from five cancer centers in South Korea completed the Korean version of the Measure of Patients' Preferences questionnaire, Mini-Mental Adjustment to Cancer scale, Insomnia Severity Index, and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Results Among patients without recurrence/metastasis, four factors were indicated: "additional information," "medical information," "emotional support," and "supportive environment." Among patients with recurrence/metastasis, five factors were indicated: "medical information and explanation," "emotional support," "supportive environment," "additional information," and "informing family." In the group without recurrence/metastasis, a positive attitude was a significant predictor of the preference for all four factors and a lower anxiety level was a predictor of the preference for additional information. Patients who reported a high level of anxious preoccupation preferred supportive environments. In the group with recurrence/metastasis, patients who showed a high level of cognitive avoidance preferred to receive medical and additional information and emotional support. Conclusions Cancer patients' preferences for communication when receiving bad news differ whether recurrence/metastasis or not in South Korea. Especially, patients with recurrence/metastasis preferred a clear explanation of medical information, and physicians informing patients' families about their diagnosis and prognosis. Thus, physicians should take patients' medical and psychological characteristics into consideration when delivering the news regarding their condition.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Korean version of the Apathy Evaluation Scale Short Form (K AES-10) for people with dementia. Methods: Participants in this study were 198 patients with dementia resident in two hospitals in the Republic of Korea. The AES-10 was translated into Korean through the translation and adaptation of instruments process developed by the World Health Organization. This process was carried out by three bilingual nursing professionals. Validity and reliability, such as construct validity, convergent validity, Cronbach's ⍺, inter-rater reliability, and test-retest reliability, were evaluated. IBM SPSS Statistics 25.0 and AMOS 26.0 programs were used for the data analysis. Results: A uni-dimensional model was proposed in the explanatory factor analysis; a single factor accounted for 68.0% of total variances. Objective This study aimed to compare the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Fourth Edition (WISC-IV) profiles of children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and typically-developing children (TC) in Korea.Methods The Korean version of the WISC-IV and the Advanced Test of Attention (ATA) were administered to 377 children and adolescents: 224 with ADHD (age 8.2±2.1 years, 182 boys) and 153 TC (age 8.7±2.4 years, 68 boys). Hospice volunteers are a high-risk group for anxiety and depression owing to their frequent exposure to patients at the end of life and their subsequent deaths. Resilience is known to be a powerful factor that affects the occurrence of anxiety and depression; however, research on this subject is scarce. We investigated the relationship of resilience with anxiety or depression in hospice volunteers. A total of 145 volunteers were included in the analysis. Participants completed self-reported scales, including the Korean version of the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, and the Professional Quality of Life Scale version 5. Pearson correlation coefficients were analyzed to identify the relationship of compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue with anxiety or depression. A PROCESS macro mediation analysis was used to investigate the mediation effects of compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue on the relationship between resilience and anxiety or depression. There were significant associations of compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue with anxiety and depression. The relationship between resilience and anxiety/depression was mediated by compassion fatigue, which had indirect effects on anxiety and depression. Efforts to reduce compassion fatigue and increase resilience could help prevent anxiety and depression in hospice volunteers.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine the validity and reliability of the Korean version of the PTSD scale (K-PTSD) for measuring attitudes and knowledge of PTSD. Methods: A cross-sectional study design was used. The K-PTSD scale consisted of 8 items for attitudes, 8 items for general knowledge of PTSD, and 3 items for knowledge of PTSD treatment; 211 nursing students and paramedic students participated. Content validity, item analysis, and factor analysis were used to examine the construct validity. Criterion validity was tested by using educational experience with PTSD as a criterion. Cronbach's α was used to identify internal consistency reliability in the attitude scale. Results: Construct validity of the K-PTSD was verified by exploratory factor analysis, with factor loadings for attitude ranging from .59 to .84. Criterion validity in comparing knowledge of PTSD (t=2.02, p=.044) and PTSD treatment (t=3.19, p=.022) showed a significant difference according to PTSD educational experience. Cronbach's α for the attitude scale was .79 and .59. Conclusion: The findings suggest that the K-PTSD is a valid and reliable tool that can measure attitudes and knowledge of PTSD among nursing and paramedic students. However, further study is needed to retest the verification of this scale with more diverse participants.

Background: The purpose of this study is to examine the factor structure of the Korean version of the 20-Item Toronto Alexithymia Scale. The TAS-20 (source of the TAS-20K) has been supported the three-factor correlated model. However, some factor structure studies of the TAS-20 rejected the three-factor correlated model and adopted alternative models. Methods: In study 1, we conducted a comparison study of the alternative measurement models by using CFA. In study 2, we examined scale reliability and gender measurement invariance of the factor structure. To examine the alternative models and scale reliability, we using the bifactor model reliability indices. Results: As a result, the DIF and DDF factors have a close relationship but the EOT factor has some differences with DIF and DDF. So we adopted a two-factor correlated model with group factor. And the adopted factor structure has partial measurement invariance. Therefore we can compare gender differences of the TAS-20K. Conclusions: This study has significance that examining TAS-20K’s factor structure and examining measurement invariance in gender.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to determine whether there is any change in the empathy scores of third-year medical graduate students after they have taken a clerkship and have begun gaining more opportunities to meet patients through the clerkship. Methods The participants were 109 third-year students in 2014 and 110 fourth-year students in 2015 at Kyungpook National University, School of Medicine. The author measured empathy using a modified and expanded version of the Korean version of the Jefferson Scale of Empathy of Physician Empathy-Student version and used the Holland-III aptitude test-S to assess vocational aptitude. Results As a results, male students in their third year exhibited higher scores, but there was no significant difference in the fourth year. The empathy score increased slightly when third-year students became fourth-year students, but the difference was not statistically significant. There was no statistically significant change in the scores of both male and female students between the 2 years. The results of the vocational aptitude test showed that students who preferred person-oriented specialties had higher empathy scores when they entered their fourth academic year compared to objectively-oriented students. Conclusion In this study, male students showed higher empathy scores than female students, an atypical finding that was inconsistent with the results of previous studies. However, the distribution of scores among male students was wider than that of female students, a finding consistent with previous studies. As such, individual differences need to be considered when developing curriculum in order to improve the empathy of medical students.

Objective The purpose of this study is to identify the demographic variables that are affecting performances on the Logical Memory (LM) subtest included in the Korean version of the Wechsler Memory Scale (WMS)-IV and to provide normative data on the LM subtest for the middle-age and elderly Korean people. Methods The participants were 435 non-demented adults aging from 50 to 90 and with the educational level ranging from 0 to 21 years. Results Age and education were found to be significantly associated with performance on the LM subtest, while gender effect was not statistically significant. Therefore, we stratified the norm blocks by age and education. Age was divided into three groups: 50-59, 60-74, and 75-90 years. Education was stratified into three groups: 0-8 years, 9-12 years, and 13 years or more. Conclusion The normative data provided in the current study are expected to be useful in clinical and research settings to detect or define subtle changes in episodic memory in Korean adults and elderly, and can also be used for cross-cultural comparison of verbal episodic memory performance among elderly populations using different languages.

Objectives The aim of this study was to measure the effect of a group-based parent education program on parenting stress and attitude and comparing the same according to adult attachment styles. Methods Twenty-two mothers who enrolled in the parent education program participated in our study. The participants filled in the Korean version of the Experience in Close Relationship Revised (ECR-R), Korean-Parenting Stress Index-Short Form (K-PSI-SF), Maternal Behavior Research Instrument (MBRI), and Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R) before and after the program. We compared the pre-and post-scores of the groups and compared the differences in effect according to adult attachment styles. Results For all study participants, the Parent Distress (p=0.023) and Total Parenting Stress (p=0.018) significantly declined after the parent education program. There were no differences in other variables. Within the secure attachment group, the Total Parenting Stress (p= 0.008), Parent Distress (p=0.015), and Difficult Child (p=0.011) scores in the K-PSI-SF significantly decreased after participating in the program. The Difficult Child scores (p=0.040) significantly dropped in the K-PSI-SF post program within the secure attachment group, compared to the insecure attachment group. Conclusion The group-based parent education program impacted parenting stress. Depending on the adult attachment styles, the effect of the program varied.
