The study of fire history and driving mechanisms at long time scales can provide a theoretical background for future fire management in forested regions. The alpine lake sediments from Daye Lake in the Qinling Mountains, east‐central China, were used to explore the influence of climate, vegetation and human activity on fires since the LGM, based on charcoals and black carbon. During the last glacial period, fire activity was mostly controlled by regional aridity under a weak East Asian summer monsoon, while human‐induced fires were commonly dominated in the late Holocene. Fire activity was found to be linked to biomass through temperature variability. The biofuel dominated by conifers induced high intensity fires in the last glacial, and herbs contributed more to the high fire frequency over the mid‐late Holocene. With predicted future rising temperatures, increased vegetation cover and extreme climate events may increase the fire risk in the region. Plain Language Summary: Fire activity has an important influence on climate changes and carbon cycling. Understanding past fire history and its driving mechanisms are essential to mitigate the impact of fires. Here, we present fire records from alpine lake sediments in the Qinling Mountains since the LGM. Results indicate that climatological drought under a prevailing weak East Asian summer monsoon increased fire activity during 21.6–11.7 cal ka BP, while human‐induced fires became more common in the late Holocene due to land use, for example, the forest clearing for agriculture and the warfare. And high temperature increases fuel loads, resulting in more fires. Moreover, vegetation types with varying biofuel supply also influence fire activity. We suggest that fire risk may increase in the region with future rising temperature. Our results have implications for understanding fire history and management in other transitional vegetation zones globally. Loess and paleosols are valuable terrestrial archives of past climate change in arid and semiarid Asia, yet most of the available records are located in central Asia and China, with only few records from western Asia. Here we report on a loess-paleosol sequence retrieved from the Gorgan Plain Southeast of the Caspian Sea that extends back to ca. 27,000 years ago. By combining palynological and micromorphological data with granulometry and magnetic properties in different horizons, we infer past changes in soil formation and vegetation composition, and the related climatic conditions. In order to set up a more reliable chronological framework, we applied luminescence and radiocarbon dating. Our results suggest a dry and cold glacial period characterized by steppe vegetation and loess deposition until about 24,000 years ago. Climate conditions during the Last Glacial Maximum (19–23,000 years ago) were relatively wet followed by a drying trend towards the end of the deglaciation. Our record suggests a relatively wet early Holocene but remains inconclusive for the late Holocene due to concurrent anthropogenic impact. We argue that changes in wintertime temperature and precipitation have been decisive in shaping the vegetation and soil formation in our study area during the Holocene, whereas changes in the position of the westerlies together with sea-level fluctuations of the Caspian Sea controlled the regional climate during the last glacial period. Clues of climate change on the Alashan Plateau since the last glacial period (40 ka) are important for revealing the mechanism of desertification of middle-latitude deserts in the Northern Hemisphere (NH). Studies are still rare for the understanding of the specific relationship of climate changes between the Alashan Plateau and the global. Based on a systematic and comparative analysis of the existing research in China and the international academic community, this paper reviews the environmental evolution history of the Alashan Plateau since the last glacial period from the records of paleo-environment and geomorphological characteristics in different deserts of the plateau (e.g., Badanjilin, Tenggeli, and Wulanbuhe). From about 40 ka to the end of the last glacial maximum, the climate on the plateau was wetter than it is today, and to the end of the Pleistocene, the climate was generally dry and the aeolian activities were enhanced. However, the climate was arid during the whole last glacial period in the Wulanbuhe Desert, evidently different from the overall pattern of the plateau. The Tenggeli Desert was characterized by an arid climate in the early Holocene. The most controversial events for the Alashan Plateau are the drought events in the middle Holocene in the Badanjilin Desert. The role and impact of the westerlies and the East Asian Summer Monsoon (EASM) systems on the climate change of the desert and even the whole plateau is a vexed question that brings different views in different periods. There is still a lack of definite evidence representing the events of global environmental change that occurred on the plateau during the discussed period. The distinctive morphology of dune mountains and the distribution of sand dunes are mutually indicative of the direction and energy of wind systems on the plateau. It is suggested that appropriate wind energy is the significant key to the desertification in these middle-latitude deserts on the plateau. From a global-scale review of climate change, the desertification of the modern-scale sandy desert landscapes on the Alashan Plateau is generally related to the global glacial period and the cold and dry climate during the past 40 ka. Summary: Vast population movements induced by recurrent climatic cycles have shaped the genetic structure of plant species. During glacial periods species were confined to low‐latitude refugia from which they recolonized higher latitudes as the climate improved. This multipronged recolonization led to many lineages that later met and formed large contact zones.We utilize genomic data from 5000 Picea abies trees to test for the presence of natural selection during recolonization and establishment of a contact zone in Scandinavia.Scandinavian P. abies is today made up of a southern genetic cluster originating from the Baltics, and a northern one originating from Northern Russia. The contact zone delineating them closely matches the limit between two major climatic regions. We show that natural selection contributed to its establishment and maintenance. First, an isolation‐with‐migration model with genome‐wide linked selection fits the data better than a purely neutral one. Second, many loci show signatures of selection or are associated with environmental variables. These loci, regrouped in clusters on chromosomes, are often related to phenology.Altogether, our results illustrate how climatic cycles, recolonization and selection can establish strong local adaptation along contact zones and affect the genetic architecture of adaptive traits. The historical biogeography of the terrestrial mammals in Europe has been widely studied on the basis of fossil records and molecular makers. However, to date, only one model of species' responses to glacial–interglacial cycles during the glacial episodes of the Quaternary, especially during the Last Glacial Maximum, has been proposed: the 'expansion‐contraction model'.The 'expansion‐contraction model' is more appropriate for thermophilous and temperate species than for Arctic species. We hypothesise that the responses of cold‐adapted species to the temperature fluctuations during glacial cycles cannot be explained by this model.In this review, we synthesise and describe, for the first time, the historical biogeography of various cold‐adapted terrestrial mammalian taxa (small mammals, herbivores, and carnivores) in Eurasia during the last glaciation (especially during the Last Glacial Maximum), and identify mechanisms underlying their response to glacier pulsation and severe climate fluctuations.We formulate the paradigm for the biogeography of cold‐adapted mammalian taxa in Europe, and identified three response models to glacial–interglacial cycles: 1) 'extinction and genetic diminution' for Lasiopodomys gregalis, Dicrostonyx spp. and Lemmus lemmus, 2) 'extinction and replacement' for Alopex lagopus, Gulo gulo and Rangifer tarandus, and 3) 'contraction and gene transfer' for Lepus timidus and Martes zibellina.Knowledge of past biogeography is essential for understanding how cold‐adapted taxa are responding to anthropogenic climate warming, and for on‐going biodiversity and habitat conservation in the Anthropocene. The New Guinea Highlands were among the first areas where agricultural societies developed about 9 kya. Even today, the highest human population densities can be found in the tropical highlands, those are the most important shelters for societies in this seriously malaria-affected equatorial area. In this study, the distribution and altitudinal patterns of Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum malaria, as well as the potential generation numbers and the annual season lengths of the extrinsic transmission periods of the parasites were modelled for the Last Glacial Maximum, the Mid-Holocene Period, 1960–1990 and 2061–2080 in the Papua New Guinea Highland provinces. It was found that areas influenced by Plasmodium vivax malaria have always been larger than the endemic regions of Plasmodium falciparum. After the Last Glacial Period, the extension of the malaria-free areas decreased dramatically. It could trigger the development of agriculture in the highlands in the early Holocene due to the increasing population concentration in malaria-free areas. These malaria-free regions could be stable in the rest part of the Holocene, which could explain the high human genetic and cultural diversity of the New Guinea Highlands. Future models predict the disruption of this stability and the notable decrease of the malaria-free areas in the highlands, especially in the case of Plasmodium vivax malaria, but the upward move in the Plasmodium falciparum -endemic regions also seems to be notable. Arid central Asia is a key region in the study of global climate change; however, the characteristics and mechanisms of regional hydroclimate changes during the late Quaternary remain poorly known. Here we present a new hydroclimate record from Lake Ebinur in arid northwestern China based on a comprehensive multiproxy analysis. The results show that Lake Ebinur formed at ~33.5 ka under relatively warm and humid conditions that continued to 26.7 ka. The following Last Glacial Maximum was cold and dry from 26.7 to 18.5 ka, most notably during the interval between 21.3 and 18.5 ka, suggesting a two‐step hydroclimate change. The moisture conditions started to improve at 15 ka and reached their highest level during the Middle Holocene (8.7–4.4 ka). A comparison of our record with other records in the Northern Hemisphere indicated that the moisture changes in central Asia followed similar variability trends to those of the east Asia monsoon region during the last glacial period, suggesting common driving forces, such as the boreal solar insolation and its associated Northern Hemisphere ice‐sheet volume. The Holocene moisture optimum in central Asia was delayed by 2000–3000 years relative to that in east Asia, which demonstrated a large influence of the remnant Northern Hemisphere ice‐sheet forcings on the mid‐latitude Asia atmospheric circulation (e.g. mid‐latitude westerlies and Siberian High) in the Early Holocene. Aim: Range shifts are a key process that determine species distributions and genetic patterns. A previous investigation reported that Juglans cinerea (butternut) has lower genetic diversity at higher latitudes, hypothesized to be the result of range shifts following the last glacial period. However, genetic patterns can also be impacted by modern ecogeographical conditions. Therefore, we re‐investigate the genetic patterns of butternut with additional northern population sampling, hindcasted species distribution models and fossil pollen records to clarify the impact of glaciation on butternut. Location: Eastern North America. Taxon: Juglans cinerea (L., Juglandaceae) (butternut). Methods: Using 11 microsatellites, we examined range‐wide spatial patterns of genetic diversity (allelic richness, heterozygosity, FST) for 1004 previously studied butternut individuals and an additional 757 samples. We constructed hindcast species distribution models and mapped fossil pollen records to evaluate habitat suitability and evidence of species' presence throughout space and time. Results: Contrary to previous work on butternut, we found that genetic diversity increased with distance to range edge, and previously observed latitudinal clines in diversity were likely due to a few outlier populations. Populations in New Brunswick, Canada were genetically distinct from other populations. At the Last Glacial Maximum, pollen records demonstrate butternut likely persisted near the glacial margin, and hindcast species distribution models identified suitable habitat in the southern United States and near Nova Scotia. Main conclusions: Genetic patterns in butternut may be shaped by both glaciation and modern environmental conditions. Pollen records and hindcast species distribution models combined with genetic distinctiveness in New Brunswick suggest that butternut may have persisted in cryptic northern refugia. Global warming is affecting the population dynamics and trophic interactions across a wide range of ecosystems and habitats. Translating these real‐time effects into their long‐term consequences remains a challenge. The rapid and extreme warming period that occurred after the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) during the Pleistocene–Holocene transition (7–12 thousand years ago) provides an opportunity to gain insights into the long‐term responses of natural populations to periods with global warming. The effects of this post‐LGM warming period have been assessed in many terrestrial taxa, whereas insights into the impacts of rapid global warming on marine taxa remain limited, especially for megafauna. In order to understand how large‐scale climate fluctuations during the post‐LGM affected baleen whales and their prey, we conducted an extensive, large‐scale analysis of the long‐term effects of the post‐LGM warming on abundance and inter‐ocean connectivity in eight baleen whale and seven prey (fish and invertebrates) species across the Southern and the North Atlantic Ocean; two ocean basins that differ in key oceanographic features. The analysis was based upon 7032 mitochondrial DNA sequences as well as genome‐wide DNA sequence variation in 100 individuals. The estimated temporal changes in genetic diversity during the last 30,000 years indicated that most baleen whale populations underwent post‐LGM expansions in both ocean basins. The increase in baleen whale abundance during the Holocene was associated with simultaneous changes in their prey and climate. Highly correlated, synchronized and exponential increases in abundance in both baleen whales and their prey in the Southern Ocean were indicative of a dramatic increase in ocean productivity. In contrast, the demographic fluctuations observed in baleen whales and their prey in the North Atlantic Ocean were subtle, varying across taxa and time. Perhaps most important was the observation that the ocean‐wide expansions and decreases in abundance that were initiated by the post‐LGM global warming, continued for millennia after global temperatures stabilized, reflecting persistent, long‐lasting impacts of global warming on marine fauna. • The Irrawaddy River and Ganges-Brahmaputra rivers are the main sediment sources of the northern Ninetyeast Ridge over the last 50 kyr. • Millennial-scale periodic changes of weathering and terrigenous input are revealed during the last glacial period. • Shift of depositional center from Bengal Fan to the continental shelf is controlled by sea level changes. The Ninetyeast Ridge is situated within the world's largest sediment "source-sink" system, which extends from the Tibetan Plateau to the Bay of Bengal (BoB). Modest and stable sedimentation rate makes it a suitable region for studying long-term land-sea interaction. Recent research has primarily focused on the northern Bengal Fan, leaving limited knowledge about sedimentary processes on the distant Ninetyeast Ridge. This study aims to address this gap by investigating sediment transport pattern and its response to climatic and environmental changes since the last glacial period, using the gravity core (CJ04–50) selected from the northern Ninetyeast Ridge. The provenance discrimination based on δEu-(Gd/Yb) N revealed that the Irrawaddy (Irr) River, along with the Ganges-Brahmaputra (G-B) Rivers, represented the primary sources of the study area. Quantitative analysis equations indicated that the contribution of the G-B Rivers decreased from the last glacial period (22%) to the Holocene period (16%), while that of the Irr River increased (from 78% to 84%). Chemical index of alteration (CIA*) values, and terrigenous input proxy indicators (Ti/Ca, Rb/Sr) were used to indicate the changes of weathering and terrigenous input over the past 50 kyr. During the last glacial period, CIA*, Ti/Ca and Rb/Sr revealed significantly millennial-scale periodic changes, including the distinct declining trend during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and Heinrich 2–4 (H2-H4) periods, followed by recovery trend during subsequent warm periods. During these cold periods of LGM and H2–H4, weakened Indian monsoon condition, reduced precipitation, cold climate, and expanding ice sheets, adversely affected physical erosion and chemical weathering in the source area, and the reduced river runoff impeded sediment transport. Conversely, these environmental factors reversed during relatively warm periods. Since the Holocene, CIA*, Ti/Ca and Rb/Sr declined, which was contrast to the climate change, and the sea level changes became the dominant factor. The rapidly rising sea level submerged the main terrigenous input channel (the Swatch of No Ground) of the G-B Rivers, made the depositional center shift from the Bengal Fan to the continental shelf, causing the decline of terrigenous input and lower CIA* values. Variation in d18O and d13C values in a speleothem from the Cango Caves in southernmost South Africa enable the construction of coherent regional composite records spanning the past 113,500 yr. Novel for the region in terms of both their length and detail, these records indicate environmental and climatic changes that both are consistent with records from the wider region and show a clear evolution from low- to high-latitude forcing dominance across the last glacial period. Prior to ca. 70 ka, the influence of direct low-latitude insolation forcing is expressed through increases in summer rainfall during austral summer insolation maxima. With the onset of Marine Isotope Stage 4, cooler global conditions and the development of high-latitude ice sheets appear to have supplanted direct insolation forcing as the dominant driver pacing patterns of environmental change, with records from the Southern and Northern Hemisphere tropics exhibiting a positive relationship until after the Last Glacial Maximum. These results highlight the complexity of South African climate change dynamics as a response to changing global boundary conditions and provide a critical reference for regional and global comparisons. Aim: The Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) remains an enigmatic period in southeast Australia due to the limited spatial and temporal resolution of its palaeoclimatic records. A major feature of the LGM landscape was the existence of the Bassian Land Bridge, joining Tasmania with the mainland of Australia during periods of low sea level, and potentially facilitating increased biotic movement between these regions. To better understand biogeographical changes on the land bridge and in southeast Australia generally during the LGM, we present a 35 ka‐year palaeoecological record from one of the larger islands of Bass Strait. Location: Bass Strait, southeast Australia. Taxon: Eucalyptus, Poaceae, Monotoca, Myriophyllum, Zygnemataceae, Botryococcus, Pediastrum. Methods: Pollen, charcoal, and non‐pollen palynomorphs were analysed in a 1.75‐m sediment core from truwana/Cape Barren Island, Bass Strait, to reconstruct changes in vegetation, fire regimes and lake levels on the Bassian Land Bridge. Results were then compared to existing palaeoenvironmental studies in the region to develop a broader context of the prevailing land bridge environment and the potential influence on biotic dispersals in Australia during the last glacial period. Results: Results suggest a major vegetation shift on the Bassian Land Bridge in response to the establishment of the LGM climate, with grassland expansion at the expense of woodland from ~29–11 ka. Floristic richness, biomass burned and lake levels also markedly decreased through this period, with the driest interval being ~25–18 ka. Dryland herbaceous taxa dispersed between the mainland and Tasmania when the landbridge was fully exposed. Main conclusions: In agreement with previous studies, our results show that the dry grassland that dominated southeast Australia (and Southern Hemisphere mid‐latitude areas) during the LGM also extended across the Bassian Land Bridge. An accurate reconstruction of the Antarctic Ice Sheet is essential in order to develop an understanding of ice-sheet responses to global climate changes. However, the erosive nature of ice-sheet expansion and the difficulty of accessing much of Antarctica make it challenging to obtain field-based evidence of ice-sheet and sea-level changes before the Last Glacial Maximum. Limited sedimentary records from Lützow-Holm and Prydz Bays in East Antarctica demonstrate that the sea level during Marine Isotope Stage 3 was close to the present level despite the global sea-level drop lower than -40 m. We demonstrate glacial isostatic adjustment modeling with refined Antarctic Ice Sheet loading histories. Our experiments reveal that the Indian Ocean sector of the Antarctic Ice Sheet would have been required to experience excess ice loads before the Last Glacial Maximum in order to explain the observed sea-level highstands during Marine Isotope Stage 3. The timing and duration of the coldest period in the last glacial stage, often referred to as the last glacial maximum (LGM), has been observed to vary spatially and temporally. In Australia, this period is characterised by colder, and in some places more arid, climates than today. We applied Monte-Carlo change point analysis to all available continuous proxy records covering this period, primarily pollen records, from across Australia (n = 37) to assess this change. We find a significant change point occurred (within uncertainty) at 28.6 ± 2.8 ka in 25 records. We interpret this change as a shift to cooler climates, associated with a widespread decline in biological productivity. An additional change point occurred at 17.7 ± 2.2 ka in 24 records. We interpret this change as a shift towards warmer climates, associated with increased biological productivity. We broadly characterise the period between 28.6 (± 2.8) – 17.7 (± 2.2) ka as an extended period of maximum cooling, with low productivity vegetation that may have occurred as a combined response to reduced temperatures, lower moisture availability and atmospheric CO2. These results have implications for how the spatial and temporal coherence of climate change, in this case during the LGM, can be best interrogated and interpreted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Glaciers over High-Mountain Asia (HMA) provide a critical window into past climate change and the linkage between high and low-latitude glaciation, but how glaciers may have varied during past glacial-interglacial cycles remains elusive. Here, we reconstruct the timing and extent of glaciations for the last 425 kyr over HMA, using a climate-glaciation simulation constrained by observations and glacial geologic evidence. We illustrate that there were multiple alpine-style glaciations comparable in extent to those during the last glacial maximum during the last four glacial-interglacial cycles. The extent and timing of glaciations vary across HMA, especially between the westerly influenced northern and the monsoonal-influenced southern HMA. The ~23-kyr periodicity dominates HMA glaciation due to the critical role of precession in regulating summer temperature and precipitation. Our results, in addition to helping to fill the incomplete glacial geologic record, provide a framework to test hypotheses linking orbital-scale climate, glaciation, and landscape evolution over HMA. We illustrate that there were multiple significant glaciations masked by extensive valley glaciers and expanded ice caps for the last 425 kyr, but a continental-scale ice sheet did not develop. Meantime, the ~23-kyr periodicity dominates HMA glaciation, in contrast to the 100-kyr cycle for the Northern Hemisphere ice sheets. During glacial times, the North Atlantic region was affected by serious climate changes corresponding to Dansgaard-Oeschger cycles that were linked to dramatic shifts in sea temperature and moisture transfer to the continents. However, considerable efforts are still needed to understand the effects of these shifts on terrestrial environments. In this context, the Iberian Peninsula is particularly interesting because of its close proximity to the North Atlantic, although the Iberian interior lacks paleoenvironmental information so far because suitable archives are rare. Here we provide an accurate impression of the last glacial environmental developments in central Iberia based on comprehensive investigations using the upper Tagus loess record. A multi-proxy approach revealed that phases of loess formation during Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 2 (and upper MIS 3) were linked to utmost aridity, coldness, and highest wind strengths in line with the most intense Greenland stadials also including Heinrich Events 3–1. Lack of loess deposition during the global last glacial maximum (LGM) suggests milder conditions, which agrees with less-cold sea surface temperatures (SST) off the Iberian margin. Our results demonstrate that geomorphological system behavior in central Iberia is highly sensitive to North Atlantic SST fluctuations, thus enabling us to reconstruct a detailed hydrological model in relation to marine–atmospheric circulation patterns. To reveal the historical dynamics of the population and existing genetic structure, maternal chloroplast DNA fragments(psbA-trnH, psbI-psbK and psbJ-petA)were used to study the phylogeography of Prinsepia uniflora, a kind of endemic plant distributed in the Loess Plateau. The results were as follows:(1)Total genetic diversity of P. uniflora was high(HT = 0.796), but genetic diversity within species was low(HS= 0.276);(2)The molecular variation analysis(AMOVA)showed that there was a high genetic differentiation within P. uniflora(FST = 0.674), and the genetic variation was mainly between populations(67.4%);(3)Mismatch analysis and MaxEnt based ecological niche simulation results in different historical periods showed that although the core suitable range of P. uniflora did not change much, population still expanded to some extent after the end of the Last Glacial Maximum(LGM). Our study indicated that, like most of the plant groups distributed in the northern regions of China, P. uniflora probably responded to the Quaternary climatic fluctuations by taking refuge nearby or in situ during the glacial period and locally recolonizing in following post-glacial period. Aim: Anti‐tropical taxa are species split by the tropics into disjunct northern and southern populations. These distributions occur throughout the Tree of Life, but the mechanisms proposed to drive this pattern are debated and generally fit into two categories: dispersal and vicariance. Here, we quantitatively test the prevalence of dispersal and vicariance as plausible drivers of anti‐tropical marine distributions using intraspecific anti‐tropical marine fishes as a model system. Methods: To test between dispersal and vicariance in latitudinally disjunct marine fishes, we used an ecological niche modelling framework to predict the spatio‐temporal suitability of tropical habitats during contemporary and glacial time periods. Three different model configurations were used per species to test: (a) presence of contemporary tropical suitable habitat for northern populations, (b) the same for southern populations and (c) presence of tropical suitable habitat during the last glacial maximum for the entire species. These models were examined in an evolutionary context to determine if there was any phylogenetic signal in biogeographic predictions. Additionally, we tested if life history traits could account for biogeographic predictions. Results: Our analyses resulted in 87 strongly supported models for 29 anti‐tropical fishes across the fish Tree of Life (northern population model, southern population model, and full species model for each taxon). Model projections consistently matched predictions of vicariance in 13 fishes and 10 fishes matched predictions of dispersal regardless of thresholding approach. We failed to find any phylogenetic signal for anti‐tropicality in general, or for dispersal and vicariant species specifically. Furthermore, dispersal and vicariant tendencies were not found to be correlated with life history traits. Main conclusions: These data quantitatively support both dispersal and vicariance as active mechanisms driving disjunct distributions in marine systems and suggest that they occur stochastically across the fish Tree of Life. This novel approach for examining dispersal and vicariance hypotheses supports the species‐specific nature of biogeographic mechanisms structuring distributions, and that a "one‐size‐fits‐all" prediction for current and future species' responses to environmental change is unlikely to be informative. Glacial and lacustrine sediments from the Mongolian Altai provide paleoclimatic information for the late Pleistocene in Mongolia, for which only a few sufficiently studied archives exist. Glacial stages referred to global cooling events are reported for the last glacial maximum (27–21 ka) and the late glacial period (18–16 ka). Sedimentary archives from the first part of the last glacial period are infrequent. We present proxy data for this period from two different archives (88–63 and 57–30 ka). Due to the limitation of effective moisture, an increase of precipitation is discussed as one trigger for glacier development in the cold-arid regions of central Asia. Our pollen analysis from periods of high paleolake levels in small catchments indicate that the vegetation was sparse and of dry desert type between 42–29 and 17–11 ka. This apparent contradiction between high lake levels and dry landscape conditions, the latter supported by intensified eolian processes, points to lower temperatures and cooler conditions causing reduced evaporation to be the main trigger for the high lake levels during glacier advances. Rising temperatures that cause melting of glacier and permafrost ice and geomorphological processes play a role in paleolake conditions. The Tibetan Plateau (TP) is extremely sensitive to climate change. However, climate variability during the last glaciation in the TP is not well-understood. The widely distributed loess deposits on the eastern TP serve as a significant archive for retrieving past climate changes and aeolian dust dynamics. Through detailed quartz optically stimulated luminescence and radiocarbon dating and the analysis of environmental proxies, we have established a reliable chronology of the Maerkang loess sequence in the eastern TP and reconstructed well-constrained histories of dust activities and environmental variation. Our results demonstrate that the accumulation of aeolian loess in this region occurred at least 60 thousand years ago. The dust mass accumulation rate (MAR) varied highly in the last glacial period, with high MARs in the Last Glacial Maximum and relatively low MARs in marine isotope stage (MIS) 3. Humid conditions occurred in MIS 3 (approximately 50–32 ka) due to the intensified Indian summer monsoon. The rapid climate variations of the Maerkang loess might be correlated to the Dansgaard–Oeschger cycles and the Heinrich events, which implies the significant impact of the North Atlantic climatic system on the TP. The East Antarctic Ice Sheet (EAIS) is the largest glacial system in the world, and the evolution history of the EAIS strongly affects global climate change. As one of the most extensive ice-free areas in coastal East Antarctica, the Larsemann Hills represent an important site for understanding the glacial evolution of East Antarctica. Generally, the last exposure process in the Larsemann Hills was considered to occur in the last glacial period. However, the initial time of the last exposure process in the Larsemann Hills remains unclear. This study presents the 10Be exposure ages of eight bedrock samples with glacial striae, which means that the original uneroded surfaces are preserved, from the Larsemann Hills and neighboring areas. The 10Be exposure ages ranging from 70.7 ± 4.7 to 13.5 ± 1.2 ka indicate that the Larsemann Hills have become ice-free since MIS4. The 10Be exposure ages with the characteristics of zonal distribution in the E–W direction and ages generally change from north to south, which reveals the combination of glacial retreat and topography differences. The activity of the ice sheet in the Larsemann Hills did not respond to the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). In contrast, the deglaciation in the Larsemann Hills occurred as a diachronous process during the global last glacial periods, which began long before the LGM and lasted after the LGM. The responses of Anatolian plants to global climate change have been poorly investigated. In this study, we aimed to understand how climatic oscillation during the Quaternary period helped to shape the current distribution patterns of the Anatolian endemic Noccaea iberidea , a typical representative of tragacanthic (thorny cushion) steppe communities of Anatolia. We used ecological niche modelling combined with statistical phylogeography, based on nuclear ribosomal ITS and plastidic trnL-F and trnS-ycf9 regions. Both the structure of the haplotype networks and the results of the extended Bayesian skyline plot analysis clearly indicated that N. iberidea has been through a recent population expansion. This interpretation was also supported by ecological niche modelling analysis, which showed that the availability of areas of high suitability expanded from the Last Interglacial to the Last Glacial Maximum, suggesting that N. iberidea might have expanded its range during the glacial periods. In conclusion, the study improves our understanding of the demographic history and responses of steppe plant communities of Anatolia to global climate changes through the Late Quaternary glacial–interglacial cycles, which in turn might aid in the development of future conservation strategies. The Neotropical region exhibits the greatest worldwide diversity and the diversification history of several clades is related to the puzzling geomorphologic and climatic history of this region. The freshwater Amazon ecoregion contains the main hydrographic basins of the Neotropical region that are highly dendritic and ecologically diverse. It contains a rich and endemic fish fauna, including one of its most iconic and economically important representatives, the bony‐tongue Arapaima gigas (Teleostei, Osteoglossiformes). Here, we evaluated the projected distribution of the genus in different historical periods (Present, Last Glacial Maximum, Last Interglacial Maximum and Near Future) and interpreted these results in light of the genomic diversity and modeled historical demography. For that, we combined species distribution models, population genetic analysis using SNPs and deep learning model selection. We analyzed a representative sample of the genus from the two basins where it naturally occurs, four localities in the Amazon (Am) and three in the Tocantins‐Araguaia (To‐Ar) basin, as well as individuals from three fish farms. We inferred a potentially smaller distribution in the glacial period, with a possible refuge in central Am. Our genetic data agrees with this result, suggesting a higher level of genetic diversity in the Am basin, compared to that observed in To‐Ar. Our deep learning model comparison indicated that the To‐Ar basin was colonized by the population from the Am basin. Considering a global warming scenario in the near future, A. gigas could reach an even larger range, especially if anthropogenic related dispersal occurs, potentially invading new areas and impacting their communities. The well‐known vicariance and dispersal models dominate in understanding the allopatric pattern for related species and presume the simultaneous occurrence of speciation and biogeographic events. However, the formation of allopatry could postdate the species divergence. We examined this hypothesis using DNA sequence data from three chloroplast fragments and five nuclear loci of Dipelta floribunda Maxim. and D. yunnanensis Franch, two shrub species with the circum Sichuan Basin distribution, combining the climatic niche modeling approach. The best‐fit model supported by the approximate Bayesian computation analysis indicated that D. floribunda and D. yunnanensis diverged during the mid‐Pleistocene period, consistent with the largest glacial period in the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. The historically interspecific gene flow was identified, but seemed to have ceased after the last interglacial period, when the range of D. floribunda moved northward from the south of the Sichuan Basin. Furthermore, populations of D. floribunda had expanded obviously in the north of the Sichuan Basin after the last glacial maximum (LGM). Relatively, the range of D. yunnanensis expanded before the LGM, and reduced during the post‐LGM especially in the north of the Sichuan Basin, reflecting the asynchronous responses of related species to contemporary climate changes. Orographic and climatic oscillations have played crucial roles in shaping the nucleotide diversity and evolutionary history of many species across the Northern Hemisphere. In this study, based on 10 nuclear loci and a chloroplast DNA marker, we analyzed the nucleotide polymorphisms and demographic history of the endangered conifer species Pinus bungeana in Northwest China and investigated the phylogenetic relationships between P. bungeana and two related species, that is, Pinus gerardiana and Pinus squamata. We found that P. bungeana exhibited an extremely low level of nucleotide diversity (πsil = 0.00159). Demographic simulations based on DIYABC analysis showed that P. bungeana underwent demographic expansion and contraction during the Miocene. According to ecological niche modeling, we found that this species survived in situ during the glacial period and was not restricted to southern refugia. We speculate that P. bungeana may have experienced widespread population shrinkage from the Last Interglacial to the Last Glacial Maximum due to geological or climatic events. Isolation‐with‐migration analysis revealed that the divergence (~2.4–4.2 Ma) among P. bungeana and its related species was significantly associated with the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau uplift events in the mid‐to‐late Tertiary period. Species tree analyses suggested that these three related Pinus species formed a monophyletic clade with high bootstrap support. These results suggest that the Miocene–Pliocene and Pleistocene geological and climatic fluctuations might have profoundly affected the nucleotide diversity and demography of this psychrotolerant conifer species in western China. The Upper Gunnison Basin (UGB), Colorado, is a montane region characterized by unusual physiography and topographic isolation. Excavations of three caves in the UGB provide one of the most diverse records of high-elevation late Quaternary vertebrates in North America. The localities, Haystack Cave (2450 m above sea level [m asl]), Cement Creek Cave (2860 m asl), and Signature Cave (3055 m asl), together provide a near-continuous record of vertebrate communities that extends from before the last glacial maximum to the present. These communities largely represent a sagebrush (Artemisia spp.) steppe-tundra environment that prevailed throughout the UGB in the late Pleistocene. At least five taxa of extinct large mammals disappear from the UGB by the Early Holocene; one small mammal (the short-faced skunk Brachyprotoma cf. B. brevimala) also became extinct. The fossil record further indicates that only four small extant mammals (Sorex preblei , Dicrostonyx sp., Lemmiscus curtatus , and Urocitellus elegans) were extirpated from the UGB by the Early Holocene, in part because of community restructuring and loss of open habitats with expansion of forests to higher elevations. An analysis of taxonomic richness and evenness at Cement Creek Cave indicates high resilience in the small mammal community despite major climate shifts over the past 40,000+ yr. Correlative ecological niche models are increasingly used to estimate potential distributions during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) for biogeographical research. In the case of presence‐background/pseudoabsences techniques, cold environments that are poorly represented in existing geography can complicate the process of model calibration and transfer into more extreme cold environments that were very common during the LGM (non‐analog conditions). This may lead to biologically unrealistic estimations. Using one cold‐adapted North American mammal, we explore a real scenario to better understand the effect of restricting the range of environmental conditions over which niche models are calibrated and then transferred to LGM conditions. We performed two sets of experiments in Maxent: 1) we calibrated models in the context of only present‐day climate conditions, which is the most common practice, and compared predictions under LGM conditions based on two extrapolation methods (clamping versus unconstrained); 2) we calibrated single models using both present‐day and LGM conditions as part of the same background in order to include more extreme environments in the model calibration. Our experiments led to dramatically different estimates of species' potential distributions, showing notable differences with respect to latitudinal and elevational shifts during the LGM. Models calibrated using present‐day climates yielded biologically unrealistic estimations, suggesting that species survived in the glaciers during the LGM. Even more unrealistic estimations were achieved when clamping was enforced as the method to extrapolate. Models calibrated in the context of both modern and past climates reduced the required degree of extrapolation and allowed more realistic potential distributions, suggesting that the species avoided extremely cold conditions during the LGM. This study alerts to the possibility of obtaining implausible potential distributions during the LGM due to restricted background datasets and offers recommendations that should promote better strategies to estimate distributional changes during glaciations. Many species that occupy high latitudes of North America were historically restricted to relatively small refugia during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). The geographic ranges of many of these species then expanded widely across the continent after glacial ice receded. In contrast, species whose LGM distributions spanned lower (relatively ice-free) latitudes may have been less likely to experience demographic and geographic retraction during glacial periods, or expansion during interglacial periods. For example, species in North America's Intermountain West occupied a topographically complex landscape across which widespread patches of suitable habitat could have helped maintain a relatively stable range-wide effective population size even if local populations fluctuated in response to shifting climates. We test for these alternative demographic signals in southern versus northern species by comparing patterns of genetic diversity of the more southern yellow-bellied marmot (Marmota flaviventris) with those of the more northern hoary marmot (M. caligata). Our data reveal high diversity but no deep structure across the distribution of yellow-bellied marmots. In contrast, hoary marmots have previously been shown to exhibit a deep divergence between regional mitochondrial clades of relatively low diversity. We suggest that these differences reflect differences in habitat availability through time, with hoary marmots persistently isolated in small glacial refugia and yellow-bellied marmots more broadly distributed across the Intermountain West through both glacial and interglacial periods. The nature and duration of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) in Australia are poorly understood, with little regional agreement on the timing and direction of LGM climate changes. One reason for this is that Australian Late Pleistocene terrestrial sediments typically are both sparse and inorganic, inhibiting the development of detailed radiocarbon chronologies. To address this problem, we extracted fossil pollen from radiometrically dated stalagmites collected in southwest Western Australia. Our pollen record, supported by 30 U‐Th dates, reveals the vegetation response to Late Pleistocene climates between ~34 and 14 ka, through the body of the LGM. Before ~28 ka, sclerophyll forests were more open than today, but at ~28 ka forest cover was essentially eliminated, and treeless conditions were maintained until progressive reforestation at ~17.5 ka. This ~10‐ka‐long full glacial episode correlates with other mid‐high latitude Southern Hemisphere records, suggesting that LGM environmental changes were closely coordinated across the hemisphere. Plain Language Summary: This study uses fossil pollen extracted from radiometrically dated stalagmites to document detailed vegetation and climate changes that occurred in the southwest of Western Australia at the peak of the last ice age. Today this region is the only part of southwest Western Australia that supports forests, yet for approximately 10,000 years between 28,000 and 18,000 years ago, eucalypt strongholds collapsed and the dominant vegetation type appears to have been shrublands. Abstract Proxy data from pollen and mollusc indicator species, periglacial phenomena, changes in geometry of mountain palaeoglaciers and based on selected lithological and geomorphological features enabled reconstruction of the Late Pleistocene climate characteristics in Poland and adjacent areas. Climate during the Eemian was generally stable but with a distinct west-east gradient in summer. Strong influence of the Atlantic air masses moving to the east resulted in the annual precipitation over 600 mm. Climate instability in the late Eemian as well as during stadials and interstadials of the Early Weichselian was expressed by progressive cooling and increasing temperature difference between winters and summers, reflecting stronger continentalism towards the west, accompanied by decreased precipitation. Periglacial frost crackings and polygonal patterns indicated occurrence of permafrost in Poland already at about 49 ka BP and its occurrence until the termination of the last glaciation. These periglacial structures have developed at mean annual temperatures from −9 to −4 °C, with winter extremes up to about −25 °C. Mean summer temperature reached likely around 10 °C as suggested by palaeobotanic record. Palaeoglaciological studies of mountain glaciers across Europe allowed inferring their activity and sensitivity to climatic fluctuations during the Late Weichselian. The Weichselian of central Europe was controlled mostly by the southerly and easterly circulation dominated by climate cyclones and anticyclones, respectively. An inflow of air masses from the west was significantly limited and concentrated mainly within the so-called periglacial corridor between the Scandinavian ice sheet and the Alps. Such circulation pattern determined serious reduction of precipitation during the Last Glacial Maximum that reached 60% in relation to modern conditions. The following Late Pleistocene cold phases (Oldest and Younger Dryas) were slightly warmer and wetter with increasing contribution of the westerlies that were strongly dependent on progressing shrinkage of the Northern Hemisphere ice sheets. Abstract: Reasons for restricted and nonuniform glaciation over High‐Mountain Asia (HMA) during the global last glacial maximum (LGM; ~28‐23 ka) have been intensively studied but remain elusive. Using a 1‐km‐resolution ice sheet model, we show that glaciers across HMA exhibit high region variability in glaciation. Glaciers in western and southern HMA are the most sensitive to climate change and those in the interior are the least sensitive. Our model broadly reproduces the restricted glaciation across HMA during the LGM, although it overestimates the extent of glaciation over western and southern HMA as compared with reconstructions. Modeled decreases in precipitation hampers glacier growth over northern HMA, while insufficient cooling hampers glacier advance over eastern HMA for the LGM. Both reduced precipitation and insufficient cooling inhibit large‐scale glaciation over inner HMA. Moreover, climatic conditions conducive to glaciation across the entire HMA include a reduction in temperature of ~10 °C and an increase in precipitation, unlikely to have occurred during any Quaternary glacial maximum. We measured meteoric 10 Be variation throughout a marine sediment core from the Larsen B embayment (LBE) of the Antarctic Peninsula, and collected in situ 10 Be and 14 C exposure ages on terrestrial glacial deposits from the northern and southern margins of the LBE. We use these data to reconstruct Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) to present deglaciation and ice shelf change in the LBE. Core sedimentary facies and meteoric 10 Be data show a monotonic progression from subglacial deposits to sub-ice-shelf deposits to open-marine conditions, indicating that its collapse in 2002 was unprecedented since the LGM. Exposure-age data from the southern LBE indicate 40 m of ice surface lowering between 14 and 6 ka, then little change between 6 ka and the 2002 collapse. Exposure-age data from the northern LBE show a bimodal distribution in which clusters of apparent exposure ages in the ranges 4.9–5.1 ka and 1.0–2.0 ka coexist near 50 m elevation. Based on these results, other published terrestrial and marine deglaciation ages, and a compilation of sea bed imagery, we suggest a north-to-south progression of deglaciation in the northeast Antarctic Peninsula in response to Holocene atmospheric and oceanic warming. We argue that local topography and ice configuration inherited from the LGM, in addition to climate change, are important in controlling the deglaciation history in this region. Pollen data recovered from the sedimentary record of western Amazonia is still inadequate to fully address climate changes over the Last Glaciation in this region. The present work focuses vegetation dynamics from an area of southwestern Amazonia during the past 42,000 cal yr B.P. based on the integration of previous and new pollen data. Sediment cores were sampled from two sites covered by tropical rainforest in fluvial terraces of the Madeira River, a major southern Amazonian tributary. The results indicated a significant proportion of cold-adapted Andean tree species, represented by Alnus (0–20%), Hedyosmum (1–15%), Podocarpus (0–5%), Illex (1–11%) and Weinmannia (0–1%) at least between > 43,163–42,018 cal yr B.P. and 10,394–10,240 cal yr B.P. During the Holocene, only pollen representative of herbs and modern Amazonian vegetation persisted. The new pollen record confirmed previous documented results that vegetation communities presently restricted to Andean areas at altitudes higher than 2000–3000 m, occupied this region of the Amazonian lowlands close to the onset and probably also during the Last Glacial Maximum. Background: The glacial-interglacial cycles in the Pleistocene caused repeated range expansion and contraction of species in several regions in the world. However, it remains uncertain whether such climate oscillations had similar impact on East Asian biota, despite its widely recognized importance in global biodiversity. Here we use both molecular and ecological niche profiles on 11 East Asian avian species with various elevational ranges to reveal their response to the late Pleistocene climate changes. Results: The ecological niche models (ENM) consistently showed that these avian species might substantially contract their ranges to the south during the Last Interglacial period (LIG) and expanded their northern range margins through the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), leading to the LGM ranges observed for all 11 species. Consistently, coalescent simulations based on 25-30 nuclear genes retrieved signatures of significant population growth through the last glacial period across all species studied. Climate statistics suggested that high climatic variability during the LIG and a relatively mild climate at the LGM potentially explained the historical population dynamics of these birds. Conclusions: This is the first study based on multiple species and both lines of ecological niche profiles and genetic data to characterize the unique response of East Asian biota to late Pleistocene climate. The present study highlights regional differences in the evolutionary consequence of climate change during the last glacial cycle and implies that global warming might pose a great risk to species in this region given potentially higher climatic variation in the future analogous to that during the LIG. Methods: We employed two Bayesian coalescent-based methods on plastid DNA sequences to infer the demographic histories ofRanunculus kuepferi, R. glacialis, Biscutella laevigata, Saxifraga oppositifolia, Primula allionii, P. marginata, Silene cordifoliaandViola argenteria. Results: R. kuepfericonformed to the ‘Expansion–Contraction’ model, while other species did not. For example,P. allioniishowed an alarming population decline during the Middle-Late Pleistocene. Milankovitch orbital parameters control cycles of insolation, a primary pacer of long term changes in climate, but exactly how insolation signals are transmitted around the globe in the climate system is unclear. In order to address the fundamental questions of when and how ice age climates begin and end, how fast glaciers retreated during the last deglaciation, and how glaciers behaved before anthropogenic influence, we need robust glacial chronologies. The timing of local glacial maxima beyond the last glacial cycle, however, has remained largely unconstrained due to moraine degradation over time, limiting our ability to fully explore these questions. By developing a detailed geomorphic surficial map and targeting relatively tall, ridge-top boulders, we have constructed a new, precise 10Be chronology of glacial maxima of the Ñirehuao glacier lobe (45°S) for the last two glacial cycles. We report one of the first directly dated records of a MIS 6 glacier advance in Patagonia, which formed a major set of moraines by at least 153 ± 5.1 ka, with a stillstand or smaller readvance by 137 ± 4.2 ka, corresponding to the two coldest and dustiest periods of MIS 6 in Antarctica. The next largest advance occurred at 23.6 ± 0.9 ka, at the end of peak Southern Hemisphere MIS 2 cooling. Retreat of the glacier commenced by ∼18.5 cal ka BP when lakes in a tributary valley just to the southwest became ice-free. It is generally assumed that during the global Last Glacial Maximum (gLGM, i.e. 18–24 ka BP) dry climatic conditions in NE Russia inhibited the growth of large ice caps and restricted glaciers to mountain ranges. However, recent evidence has been found to suggest that glacial summers in NE Russia were as warm as at present while glaciers were more extensive than today. As a result, we hypothesize that precipitation must have been relatively high in order to compensate for the high summer temperatures and the resulting glacial ablation. We estimate precipitation abundance by mass balance calculations for the palaeo-glaciers on Kamchatka and in the Kankaren Range using a degree-day-modelling (DDM) approach, and find that precipitation during the gLGM was likely comparable to, or even exceeded, the modern average. We suggest that stronger than present southerly winds over the Northwest Pacific may have accounted for the abundant precipitation. Globally, research aiming to reveal the unique biogeochemical processes and gas hydrate potential in methane seep areas is well established. Furthermore, methane seeps discovered in the South China Sea (SCS) have been widely studied and have achieved significant results. Herein, by systematically analyzing sedimentary samples from the Shenhu area, SCS, we discovered a methane seep that was once active during the last glacial period, particularly the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) period, and fixed at the seafloor for ∼10 ka. This discovery was achieved by integrating the features of the glauconite within the foraminifera chamber, different morphologies of pyrites, and unique framboid goethites (pyrite pseudomorphs). In addition, this study accounted for the high chromium-reducible sulfur content and extremely negative δ34S values (from −50.78 to −46.92%) between 121 and 231 cmbsf, the Mo content and its correlation with total sulfur (TS) and total organic carbon (TOC), the TS/TOC ratios of sediments, the results of AMS 14C dating, and the results of planktonic foraminifera analysis in the case of carbon and oxygen isotopes. Glauconite, which is usually considered a product associated with transgressive deposits and condensed sections, is widely found in warm climatic intervals. However, these intervals are generally associated with methane emission events. Thus, our results demonstrate another mechanism for the formation of glauconite in methane seeps during the LGM. Furthermore, the existence of framboid goethites implies that this methane seep has been subsiding since the end of the LGM and that few pyrites that formed previously were reoxidized. Notably, this study is the first to report a systematic investigation of methane seep activity during the last glacial period by the indication of authigenic minerals, such as glauconite and framboid goethite, in the SCS. Recent debate on records of southern midlatitude glaciation has focused on reconstructing glacier dynamics during the last glacial termination, with different results supporting both in-phase and out-of-phase correlations with Northern Hemisphere glacial signals. A continuing major weakness in this debate is the lack of robust data, particularly from the early and maximum phase of southern midlatitude glaciation (~30-20 ka), to verify the competing models. Here we present a suite of 58 cosmogenic exposure ages from 17 last-glacial ice limits in the Rangitata Valley of New Zealand, capturing an extensive record of glacial oscillations between 28-16 ka. The sequence shows that the local last glacial maximum in this region occurred shortly before 28 ka, followed by several successively less extensive ice readvances between 26-19 ka. The onset of Termination 1 and the ensuing glacial retreat is preserved in exceptional detail through numerous recessional moraines, indicating that ice retreat between 19-16 ka was very gradual. Extensive valley glaciers survived in the Rangitata catchment until at least 15.8 ka. These findings preclude the previously inferred rapid climate-driven ice retreat in the Southern Alps after the onset of Termination 1. Branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraether (GDGT) distributions observed in a sediment core from Lake McKenzie were utilized to quantitatively reconstruct the pattern of mean annual air temperature (MAAT) from coastal subtropical eastern Australia between 37 and 18.3calkaBP and 14.0calkaBP to present. Both the reconstructed trend and amplitude of MAAT changes from the top of the sediment core were nearly identical to a local instrumental MAAT record from Fraser Island, providing confidence that in this sediment core branched GDGTs could be used to produce a quantitative record of past MAAT. The reconstructed trend of MAAT during 37 to 18.3calkaBP and timing of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) in the Lake McKenzie record were in agreement with previously published nearby marine climate records. The amplitude of lower-than-present MAAT during the LGM potentially provides information on the latitude of separation of the Tasman Front from the East Australian current in the subtropical western Pacific. The Lake McKenzie record shows an earlier onset of near modern day warm temperatures in the early Holocene compared to marine records and the presence of a warmer than present day period during the mid-Holocene. Abstract: Recent studies of the Last Glacial period Indo-Australian summer monsoon (IASM) have revealed links to both northern and southern hemisphere high latitude climate as well as to regional ocean conditions. Particular interest has been paid to the monsoon response to Heinrich events, with variability explained by meridional shifts in positioning of the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), but this model has not been adequately tested. In addition, the shorter-lived Dansgaard/Oeschger (D/O) events have not been detected (beyond D/O-1, the Bølling/Allerød) in land-based records from the Indo-Pacific, despite their prominent expression in stalagmites from southern Asia, raising questions about the sensitivity of the IASM to these events. Here we present a Southern Hemisphere stalagmite oxygen isotopic time series from Ball Gown Cave (BGC), tropical northern Australia, located on the margins of the modern austral summer ITCZ, that spans 40–31 and 27–8 ka. Elevated IASM rainfall coincides with Heinrich stadials and the Younger Dryas, while decreased rainfall characterizes D/O interstadials, a response that is anti-phased with sites spanning the Indo-Pacific Warm Pool and with Chinese records of the East Asian summer monsoon. The BGC time series thus reveals a precipitation dipole consistent with a southward (northward) migration of the ITCZ during periods of high northern latitude cooling (warming) as the primary driver of millennial-scale IASM variability during the Last Glacial period. Our record indicates a strengthening of the IASM after the Younger Dryas period, likely as a result of rising sea level and sea surface temperatures, breaking the link with the high latitudes. Abstract: Several lines of evidence have previously been used to suggest that ice retreat after the last glacial maximum (LGM) resulted in regionally-increased levels of volcanic activity. It has been proposed that this increase in volcanism was globally significant, forming a substantial component of the post-glacial rise in atmospheric CO2, and thereby contributing to climatic warming. However, as yet there has been no detailed investigation of activity in glaciated volcanic arcs following the LGM. Arc volcanism accounts for 90% of present-day subaerial volcanic eruptions. It is therefore important to constrain the impact of deglaciation on arc volcanoes, to understand fully the nature and magnitude of global-scale relationships between volcanism and glaciation. The first part of this paper examines the post-glacial explosive eruption history of the Andean southern volcanic zone (SVZ), a typical arc system, with additional data from the Kamchatka and Cascade arcs. In all cases, eruption rates in the early post-glacial period do not exceed those at later times at a statistically significant level. In part, the recognition and quantification of what may be small (i.e. less than a factor of two) increases in eruption rate is hindered by the size of our datasets. These datasets are limited to eruptions larger than 0.1km3, because deviations from power-law magnitude–frequency relationships indicate strong relative under-sampling at smaller eruption volumes. In the southern SVZ, where ice unloading was greatest, eruption frequency in the early post-glacial period is approximately twice that of the mid post-glacial period (although frequency increases again in the late post-glacial). A comparable pattern occurs in Kamchatka, but is not observed in the Cascade arc. The early post-glacial period also coincides with a small number of very large explosive eruptions from the most active volcanoes in the southern and central SVZ, consistent with enhanced ponding of magma during glaciation and release upon deglaciation. In comparison to non-arc settings, evidence of post-glacial increases in rates of arc volcanism is weak, and there is no need to invoke significantly increased melt production upon ice unloading, as occurred in areas such as Iceland. Non-arc volcanoes may therefore account for a relatively higher proportion of global volcanic emissions in the early post-glacial period than is suggested by the relative contributions of arc and non-arc settings at the present day. The second part of this paper critically examines global eruption records, in an effort to constrain global-scale changes in volcanic output since the LGM. Accurate interpretation of these records relies on correcting both temporal and spatial variability in eruption recording. In particular, very low recording rates, which also vary spatially by over two orders of magnitude, prevent precise, and possibly even accurate, quantitative analysis. For example, if we assume record completeness for the past century, the number of known eruptions (volcanic explosivity index≥2) from some low-latitude regions, such as Indonesia, is approximately 1 in 20,000 (0.005%) for the period 5–20ka. There is a need for more regional-scale studies of past volcanism in such regions, where current data are extremely sparse. We attempt to correct for recording biases, and suggest a maximum two-fold (but potentially much less) increase in global eruption rates, relative to the present day, between 13 and 7ka. Although volcanism may have been an important source of CO2 in the early Holocene, it is unlikely to have been a dominant control on changes in atmospheric CO2 after the LGM. Abstract: Exposure dating of abraded bedrock surfaces below glacial trimlines in the Pięciu Stawów Polskich/Roztoki Valley, using cosmogenic 36Cl, has been applied to determine the deglaciation chronology in the study area. Nineteen rock samples yielded ages between 21.5 and 9.5ka. The spatial distribution of ages provides evidence of progressive downwasting of glaciers within the study area. Dates of exposure indicate that the onset of ice volume decrease occurred no later than 21.5ka. This provides evidence that the local maximum glaciation occurred in accordance with the global Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). The first period of deglaciation in the study area was completed around 18ka. Further significant loss of ice volume is confirmed between 15 and 13ka. The spatial distribution of chronological data within the Pięciu Stawów Polskich Valley indicates post-LGM readvances of glaciers around 17ka and 12ka. Using the glacier modelling and paleoclimate proxies from the study area, the early Late Glacial glacier had been stable with a 9–10°C decrease in temperature and 30–50% lower precipitation in relation to modern conditions. The subsequent advance took place with temperatures 6–7°C lower and 10–30% less precipitation. The timing of the readvances is nearly synchronous with Late Glacial advances in the European Alps, Southern Carpathians and Anatolian peninsula. This suggests synchronicity of major climatic fluctuations across Central Europe and the northern margin of the Mediterranean Basin. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Reconstructing the paleoglaciation of the Tibetan Plateau is critical to understanding linkages between regional climate changes and global climate changes, and here we focus on the glacial history of the Shaluli Shan, an area of the southeastern Tibetan Plateau that receives much of its precipitation from monsoon flow. Based on field investigation, geomorphological mapping, and 10Be exposure dating of moraines, we identify glacial deposits from the Late Glacial, with minimum ages at 13.0 ± 1.2 –17.1 ± 1.6 ka, global Last Glacial Maximum (gLGM) at 21.6 ± 2.0 ka, and pre-gLGM at 102.3 ± 10.0–183.6 ± 17.0 ka. These ages are consistent with and significantly extend the known range from most prior chronological work using terrestrial cosmogenic nuclides in this area, and include a set of dates for the Kuzhaori moraine that raise questions about prior chronologies based on the electron spin resonance technique. Ice caps about 4000 km2 in size covered the Haizishan Plateau and the Xinlong Plateau during the global LGM, with large glaciers extending far down outlet valleys. The presence of ice cap glaciation, here, contrasts strongly to glaciation elsewhere in the Shaluli Shan and more central regions of the Tibetan Plateau where ice expansion remained constricted to valleys. This work provides important insights into the paleoclimate pattern and monsoon evolution of the Tibetan Plateau over past glacial cycles and indicates that the Shaluli Shan has a glacial chronology more consistent with the Northern Hemisphere paleo-ice sheets than other areas of the Tibetan Plateau. Aim Climatic fluctuations during the Pleistocene have shaped the population structure of many extant taxa. However, few studies have examined widespread species inhabiting the Australian continent, where periods of increased aridity characterized the Pleistocene. Here we investigate the phylogeography and population history of a widespread and vagile southern Australian marsupial, the western grey kangaroo ( Macropus fuliginosus). Location Southern Australia. Methods We examined the variation of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region from 511 individuals of M. fuliginosus sampled throughout their transcontinental distribution. Maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses were used to investigate the phylogeography and coalescence analyses were then used to test hypothesized biogeographical scenarios. Results The combined results of the phylogeographical and coalescence analyses revealed a complex evolutionary history. Macropus fuliginosus originated in the south-west of the continent, with north-western and south-western populations subsequently diverging as a result of vicariance events during the mid-Pleistocene. Subsequent arid phases affected these populations differently. In the north-west, the expansion and contraction of the arid zone resulted in repeated vicariance events and multiple divergent north-western mtDNA subclades. In contrast, the south-western population was less impacted by climatic oscillations but gave rise to a major transcontinental eastward expansion. Main conclusions Macropus fuliginosus exhibits the genetic signature of divergence due to unidentified barriers in south-western Western Australia, while previously identified barriers across southern Australia appear to have had little impact despite evidence of a broad-scale range expansion prior to the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). This pattern of localized expansion and contraction is comparable to unglaciated regions in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Furthermore, this study indicates that despite the potential similarities between Northern Hemisphere glaciation and the activation of dune systems in the Australian arid zone, both of which rendered large areas inhospitable, the biotic responses and resultant phylogeographical signatures are dissimilar. Whereas a limited number of major geographically concordant refugia are observed in glaciated areas, the Southern Hemisphere arid zone appears to be associated with multiple species-specific idiosyncratic refugia. Although the general patterns of deglacial climate change are relatively well constrained, how, and to what magnitude, large parts of the Southern Hemisphere responded to deglacial forcings remains unknown, particularly for the early part of the last deglaciation. We investigate the timing and magnitude of early deglacial climate change using cosmogenic 10Be surface exposure ages of moraines deposited by glaciers in the Rio Guanaco Valley, adjacent to the Southern Patagonian Ice Field at 50°S. We demonstrate that the beginning of ice retreat from the local last glacial maximum occurred at 19.7 ± 1.1 ka, with significant retreat commencing at 18.9 ± 0.4 ka, concurrent with glacier retreat elsewhere in southern Patagonia and New Zealand and with warming of Southern Hemisphere middle to high latitudes. A third moraine shows that half of the deglacial retreat upvalley had occurred by 17.0 ± 0.3 ka. Equilibrium line altitudes and climate simulations show ~1.5 °C of warming in southern Patagonia between 18.9 ± 0.4 ka and 17.0 ± 0.3 ka, one-third of the total estimated deglacial warming relative to present. The climate model links this warming to retreat of Northern Hemisphere ice sheets ca. 19 ka through changes in ocean circulation that caused a bipolar seesaw response resulting in Southern Hemisphere warming and driving initial deglaciation across southern Patagonia. Abstract: We summarize 121 14C and in-situ cosmogenic (10Be and 36Cl) ages that constrain fluctuations of the Irish Ice Sheet (IIS) since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) that can be linked to abrupt climate changes in the North Atlantic region. These data provide a robust means to date ice-sheet fluctuations because similar-age events can be identified from widely spaced sites, they are constrained by stratigraphy, and they can be related to large changes in the configuration of a dynamic ice sheet. The following events are recognized. (1) AMS 14C ages and 10Be and 36Cl ages as well as offshore data suggest that the last maximum advance of the IIS occurred between ∼27 and 23 cal ka. (2) Deglaciation began on the western continental shelf and in the Irish Sea Basin at ∼23 cal ka. Dated sites from around Ireland constrain subsequent widespread retreat of ice-sheet margins from the shelf onto Irish coastlines during the Cooley Point Interstadial ≥20 cal ka. AMS 14C ages suggest that the Cooley Point Interstadial continued until ≤18.2 cal ka B.P. During this interstadial, retreat of the ice-sheet margin into the northern Irish Sea Basin indicates that the IIS may have lost up to two-thirds of its mass. (3) Dated sites from northwestern and eastern Ireland indicate that the Cooley Point Interstadial was terminated by ice readvance during the Clogher Head Stadial at ∼18.2 cal ka. (4) The Linns Interstadial was a brief interval (≥17.0–≥16.5 cal ka) of ice recession following the Clogher Head Stadial that is identified from raised marine sediments in eastern and northern Ireland and cosmogenic ages elsewhere in Ireland. (5) The IIS subsequently readvanced during the Killard Point Stadial, reaching its maximum extent ∼16.5 cal ka, indicating that the readvance began sometime earlier. (6) Widespread retreat of the IIS began by ∼15.5 cal ka during the Rough Island Interstadial. The climatic responses to the direct radiative effect of dust aerosol at the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) are examined using a general circulation model with online simulation of dust. The predicted global dust emission at the LGM is 2.3 times as large as the present-day value, which is the combined effect of the expansion of dust sources and the favorable meteorological parameters (MPs; e.g., the strong surface wind and the low air humidity) under the LGM climate. Simulated global dust emission is 1966 Tg yr−−1 with present-day dust sources and MPs, 2820 Tg yr−−1 with LGM dust sources and current MPs, 2599 Tg yr−−1 with present-day dust sources and LGM MPs, and 4579 Tg yr−−1 with LGM sources and MPs. The simulated percentage increases of dust concentrations are the largest at high latitudes in both hemispheres, which are consistent with the deposition data from geological records. The LGM dust is estimated to exert global annual-mean shortwave (SW) and longwave (LW) radiative forcing (RF) of −−4.69 and ++1.70 W m−−2 at the surface, respectively, and −−0.58 and ++0.68 W m−−2 at the top of the atmosphere, respectively. On a global- and annual-mean basis, surface air temperature (SAT) is predicted to be reduced by 0.18 K and precipitation is reduced by 0.06 mm day−−1, as a result of the net (SW and LW) radiative effect of dust at the LGM. Two sensitivity studies are performed to identify the uncertainties in simulated climatic effect of LGM dust that arise from the assumed LW and/or SW absorption by dust: 1) in the absence of dust LW radiative effect, the LGM global- and annual-mean SAT is predicted to be further reduced by 0.19 K; and 2) when the single scattering albedo of the Saharan dust at 0.55 μμm is increased from 0.89 to 0.98 in the LGM climate simulation, the LGM dust-induced annual- and global-mean surface cooling increases from 0.18 to 0.63 K even with both SW and LW radiative effects of dust. In these two sensitivity studies, the LGM dust is predicted to induce an average cooling of 0.42 and 0.72 K in SAT, respectively, over the tropical oceans. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To better understand the process of hydrographic and temperature changes in the Indian Ocean, we present Glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraether data on core BoB-56 from the Bay of Bengal to reconstruct the sea surface temperature (SST) variability during the last glaciation. The results indicate that the TEX 86 -derived SST ranged from 22.00 to 28.30 °C with several fluctuations since 40 ka BP and that the evolution pattern matched well with the marine isotope stage (MIS). During MIS 3, the SST kept around 24.60 °C with some small amplitudes. The SST showed more significant fluctuations during MIS 2 and increased gradually with a ~3 °C cooling during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). After the Younger Dryas (YD) stage, Holocene SST values exhibited miniscule variations. During the last glaciation climate variability process, the cold signals of the YD and Heinrich events were recorded well in our core SST series, revealing a regional response to global climate changes. The warming trend during these millennial-scale cold events in the northern Indian Ocean was also identified, and SST increased in the range of 2 °C. A comparison of SST records and atmospheric CO 2 concentration shows that the warming process during the YD, LGM, and Heinrich (1–4) events matched the gradual increase in atmospheric CO 2 concentration in the northern Indian Ocean. Hence, this study implies millennial-scale hydroclimate change linked with atmospheric CO 2 forcing that could improve our knowledge of the role of atmospheric CO 2 in triggering abrupt Indian Ocean climate changes. Changes of marine paleoproductivity could reflect the history of marine biogenic cycle process, and exploring the evolution and mechanism of marine productivity are important for understanding the global biogenic factor cycle and its roles in past, present and future climate change. Based on the analysis of biogenic silica (BSi) in core ADM-159 and core BoB-56 from the northeastern Indian Ocean, high-resolution curves of paleoproductivity evolution were obtained. The results show that the BSi contents in these two core sediments are less than 1.8%, mainly affected by the low supply of silica skeleton and the high dissolution and dilution of terrigenous materials. Distinct fluctuations in BSi contents could still be reflected, and their relative values were controlled by chemical weathering processes and terrigenous material supply. The power spectrum analysis of BSi content shows reliable periodicities of 5.86 kyr, 1.95 kyr, 1.35 kyr and 1.09 kyr, suggesting that millennial-scale BSi value might be affected by solar activity. Based on the BSi mass accumulation rates (MAR), lower paleoproductivity during the glacial period and higher level during the Holocene were revealed in our records, which matched well with the global climate changes. Temperatures controlled by low latitude insolation changes could influence the nutrient substance supply, further promote productivity variations at the glacial–interglacial scale. Some millennial events, such as the Heinrich stadial 1 (HS1) and Younger Dryas (YD) periods, showed relatively low paleoproductivity, while the Bølling/Allerød (B/A) period and the middle Holocene showed higher paleoproductivity. These millennial paleoproductivity fluctuations may be due to the changes of nutrient supply caused by Indian summer monsoon (ISM).
