- Abstract
Leticia is a Colombian city on the Amazon River, consolidated as a jungle tourist destination. This city can be viewed from three narrative perspectives: the "nationalist", the "wild" and the "eco-adventure". I suggest that the "performance" of the city to support the last narrative perspective is generating a deep symbolic transformation in urban monuments, from nationalist imagery to tourism related imagery. This city produced by and for tourism and the "enjoyment of the Amazon" is highly exclusionary. The hotel architecture communicates that the city enjoyed by tourists is denied to its inhabitants, producing an urbs that denies the polis and civitas dimensions of the city. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article aims to determine the problems of the city as polis, civitas and urbs, to identify its characteristics and emphasize the serious problem that means the centrality of the urbs in the modern city. It analyzes aspects of public space, citizenship and city, as interrelated, recovering from urban studies, political and social analysis of the city, to better characterize their problems. From the literature and existing studies we found that civitas and polis are in crisis, and reduced danger of disappearing, to result in a urbs, utilitarian and less and less symbolic value. The result is poverty, greater inequality and social fragmentation, fear, insecurity, isolation, weakening of the civitas and polis, disenfranchisement, depoliticization and dehumanization; against the hegemonic and development of real estate market. It is concluded that dominates the urbs, which, as all the problems of the city needs to be rethought from the civitas and polis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article studies the social protest of the 1280s in the main cities of the county of Flanders. The protestors were a very heterogeneous group, because wealthy tradesmen, craftsmen and middle class artisans united forces to fight their common enemy, the established families that had governed the cities for many decades. The protesters had a shared, distinct and insistent identity. They presented themselves as the meentucht, a vernacular translation (or better: a contemporary interpretation) of the Latin communitas. The use of this term as a basis for their self-definition justified their protest because the rebels saw themselves as the true commoners of the city. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For many years handcrafts have provided the theme for a number of work groups, round tables or symposia and the archaeological documentation of this subject has been widely examined. This article considers the case of craftsmen in six civitas-capitals in East Gaul: Reims, Sens, Langres, Troyes, Autun and Besançon.The documentation available varies from site to site but, thanks to recent and new archaeological data, an attempt has been made to progress research in new directions. Certain aspects have been favoured, in particular the location of the workshops in towns.

ABSTRACT The idea of city in the context of Spanish American settlement appears in political and urban treatises of the 16th century. However, this discourse should not be analyzed unilaterally as something imposed from above by the Crown or its royal officers. Rather, one might inquire into the fact that those treatises reflected the widespread thought of the population, or into how ideas and knowledge about the city circulated in different spheres of society. The objective of this article is not to define the city, but to call attention to an aspect that has not been addressed by historiography: the social and political appropriation of the concept of city on the basis of its conception as civitas, or political community. To this effect, it focuses on urban centers that went through crises or moments in which the idea of city was especially entrenched and made use of by the Spanish inhabitants. Thus, it seeks to analyze the city from the bottom up, from the perspective of the inhabitants of the urban centers, soldiers, and council and government officials who were building cities or towns on American territory, in order to observe how political reality was shaped. These groups of people had a particular view of the essence of the city, which they put into practice in their diverse manifestations and negotiations with the Crown.

- Abstract
By the mid-fifth century B.C. the long ordeal of the Persian Wars was over, and Athens, triumphant leader of a league of Greek city-states, was building a civilization which has been the envy of posterity. The great Athenian dramatists were writing, and work had begun on Athens's crown and glory, the buildings erected on the steep Acropolis overlooking the city. At the same time colonies established by Greek cities in southern Italy and Sicily were in their different ways following where those of the Aegean had led. At this time Rome was a small town spread over a group of low hills beside the Tiber in central Italy. Only a short distance to the north the Etruscan league of cities had created a civilization similar in some ways to that of the Greeks in the Aegean. Rome had once been part of this loose Etruscan federation, and its independence was at this time far from secure. Beyond the Alps the La Tène civilization had been spread by the Celts, armed with iron weapons and war chariots, through much of central Europe. They were pressing into western Europe, the Spanish peninsula, and the British Isles. Beyond them to the north and northeast, a Bronze Age culture still survived, and in the Baltic and Scandinavian regions and on the outermost fringes of the British Isles, Stone Age peoples were beginning to learn the rudiments of agriculture.

Autor zatim donosi prikaze kompleksnih tipoloških modela Andrása Kubinyija i Nevena Budaka, a potom predlaže vlastitu podjelu za naselja u donjem međurječju Drave i Save., The paper discusses the issue of typology of the medieval urban settlements in the lower interamnium of Drava and Sava. Historiographical research of the subject in Hungary and Croatia has yielded two basic approaches towards the typology of the medieval urban settlements in Pannonian basin. The first is mainly based on legal and terminological criteria according to medieval and early modern tradition of simply dividing the urban settlements into two basic categories: cities and towns. The main problem with the traditional approach is its simplicity that does not enable a more precise division of settlements. Also, there is a huge problem of legal and terminological inconsistency in the medieval resources, which often makes it very difficult to differentiate between the two basic types. Clearly, a combination of different criteria, such as terminology, legal status, social development, and the development of various central functions, is necessary for the basic division. Recently, historians such as Neven Budak and András Kubinyi have developed more complex models of dividing the urban settlements based on their central functions into several types. The advantages of such models lie in possibilities to develop a typology that is more precise than the traditional one. A complex typology allows implementation of other methods, for example implementation of Chistaller’s graphical and mathematical model of central places. These models, on the other hand, require a thorough research of a great number of historical resources, and it takes a lot of time to collect and process the relevant data. Another possible disadvantage of these models may be their complexity, because not all the researches on urban history require an elaborate typology. The model proposed in this paper is somewhat simpler than the aforesaid two because it defines only three types of urban settlements (cities, towns and emerging towns), which is not that different form the traditional division. Still, it is based on various indicators of urban development, which makes this model a step forward from the traditional approach.
