The citation of articles in scientific production is an important indicator of quality, as demonstrated in the first moments of this document. This text defines effective citation as a way of assessing the topicality of the thesis on the basis of the references used. Subsequently, a study of the effective citation of scientific articles and the differences with the citation measures used so far in the doctoral theses of Pedagogical Sciences of the University of Matanzas, defended in the period 2017-2019, was carried out. In the study was used the documentary analysis method. The results obtained are organised in the form of tables and graphs that allow to illustrate the difficulties encountered in the theses. The main difficulty is the poor number of citations of scientific articles in the main databases of the world related to the subject of the thesis. Finally, the results obtained are contrasted with other researches and the little use of bibliography obtained from the main databases in the doctoral researches in Pedagogical Sciences of the University of Matanzas is evidenced. As the prominence of Chinese scholars increases in biomedical research, with an accompanying rise in volume of the published literature, there is a need to standardize the way in which the names of Chinese scholars are represented, not only for accuracy of reference lists and the published record, but as a sign of cultural understanding and sensitivity. An inaccurately portrayed name not only robs the author of valid and accurate citations to their work, but also renders the published literature as inaccurate. This short discussion offers a few perspectives and examples, and solutions as how to simply, but effectively, in a culturally sensitive manner, represent Chinese academics' names. This will be useful for early career researchers, database managers and policy makers who might not have sufficient experience. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Citation studies are fundamental for the development of science, in which multidisciplinarity is present in most scientific research, making citation and reference key factors in the field of scientific communication. This work contextualizes an information network structure originated by data present in scientific production, such as authors, citations, relationships between authors and scientific works, aiming to constitute an information processing model that makes it possible to identify, extract and organize these data. of texts in Portuguese, based on ABNT standards. For this, a qualitative-quantitative methodology was used, in which a model was created using citation and reference concepts and later, a prototype was implemented as proof of concept of the elaborated model. Therefore, the study starts from the following problem: how is it possible to create indicators or carry out analyzes of citations and bibliographic references in general or specific segments, without depending on other entities, such as publishers and newspapers. Therefore, it is expected that, with the result of this research, it will be possible to propose a solution that is capable of identifying, extracting and organizing bibliographic references and citations of scientific documents in any segment, generating significant contributions to support the development of database analysis. and the construction of new solutions aimed at science, proposing a deep link with the data present in the research.

Academic research is one of the main concerns of students, professors and academic staff. The variety of different journals and the large amount of publications in a single research field has lead to some degrees of confusion regarding the management of articles for citation. Therefore, reference manager software are becoming increasingly popular. These software are capable of creating a library of articles and documents, categorizing them, as well as providing easy citation methods for authors and researchers. One of these software is the Mendeley. Mendeley can manage and organize research for its users. One of its various advantages over other similar software is that it is free of charge. In this article, we will review the various characteristics of this reference manager. Then we will compare it with other similar software and show that it has a better applicability.

Although peer review is considered one of the main pillars of modern science, experimental methods and protocols seem to be not a rigorous subject of this process in many papers. Commercial equipment, test kits, labeling kits, previously published concepts, and standard protocols are often considered to be not worth a detailed description or validation. Even more disturbing is the extremely biased citation behavior in this context, which sometimes leads to surrogate citations to avoid low-impact journals, preprints, or to indicate traditional practices. This article describes some of these surprising habits and suggests some measures to avoid the most unpleasant effects, which in the long term may undermine the credibility of science as a whole.

Background: The impact of medical research is usually judged on the basis of citations in the serial literature. A better test of its utility is through its contribution to clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) on how to prevent, diagnose, and treat illness. This study aimed to compare the parameters of lung cancer research papers with those cited as references in lung cancer CPGs from 16 countries, and the Cochrane Collaboration. These comparisons were mainly based on bibliographic data compiled from the Web of Science (WoS). Methodology: We examined 7357 references (of which 4491 were unique) cited in a total of 77 lung cancer CPGs, and compared them with 73,214 lung cancer papers published in the WoS between 2004 and 2018. Results: References used by lung CPGs were much more clinical than the overall body of research papers on this cancer, and their authors predominantly came from smaller northern European countries. However, the leading institutions whose papers were cited the most on these CPGs were from the USA, notably the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Texas, the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. The types of research cited by the CPGs were primarily clinical trials, as well as three treatment modalities (chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery). Genetics, palliative care and quality of life were largely neglected. The median time gap between papers cited on a lung CPG and its publication was 3.5 years longer than for WoS citations. Conclusions: Analysis of the references on CPGs allows an alternative means of research evaluation, and one that may be more appropriate for clinical research than citations in academic journals. Own-country references show the direct contribution of research to a country's health care, and other-country references show the esteem in which this research has been held internationally. © 2021 King's College London

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) is continuing to develop as a multidisciplinary, international field of practice and a topic of study itself. As the field matures, one area of interest has been the SoTL literature review. However, there has not been an evidence-based study of SoTL citation practices. The purpose of this study was to analyze one year’s worth of articles from this journal to see how references and in-text citations are used. Overall, 514 references and 954 in-text citations were found across 18 articles. A diverse range of multidisciplinary and specialized academic journals were cited; 8 percent of in-text citations cited a source other than an academic journal. Each reference and in-text citation was coded as either substantive (Applied, Contrastive, or Supportive) or non-substantive (Reviewed or Perfunctory). A high rate of in-text citations (74 percent) were found to be non-substantive, with the majority of non-substantive in-text citations (71 percent) found in either the Introduction or Literature Review sections of the articles. Conversely, of the 26 percent of in-text citations considered substantive, 50 percent were found in either the Results & Discussion or Conclusion sections. We demonstrate the use of the coding scheme as a self-assessment tool and conclude by suggesting that SoTL authors and reviewers could use it to assess the depth and breadth of their literature reviews.

Plagiarism is growing at rampant rate due to available internet and the growing tendency of wrong practices of hiding the undocumented or documented sources. In academic institutions, plagiarism poses a threat to both students and instructors that ultimately leads to common plagiarism undetected, lost grants or public resources with over all poor quality. A step-by-step approach is proposed to avoid plagiarism for students by correct paraphrasing and quoting the words, sentences and paragraphs piece by piece to give the appropriate credit to the author with existing work of its original author. This approach will avoid the parallel or reproduction of material inappropriately used in any way (plagiarism prevention and detection). Several examples are cited from documented websites of leading universities and institutions to make new freshman students aware of plagiarism and methods to avoid it. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

HISTORICAL research , *20TH century painting , *CULTURAL history , *APHORISMS & apothegms , *ART museums - Abstract
It is widely acknowledged that hitherto undervalued forms of historical evidence such as paintings, prints and ceramics should enjoy a higher status in historical research. The rise of cultural history in the latter decades of the twentieth century has cemented the role of such evidence in newly evolving historical narratives. However, the logistics of integrating visual references into academic writing continue to pose challenges for researchers and inhibit the use of such material in research degrees, journal articles and books. This article addresses the need to create a consistent and comprehensive system for referencing visual material in academic historical research and will argue that such a process represents a crucial step in establishing high-quality visual analysis for all periods of historical enquiry. The first half of the article outlines the obstacles facing historians who want to engage in visual analysis. These include: the inconsistent cataloging of visual material in archives, galleries and museums; the use of "transient" sources such as websites, where visual imagery can be digitized in a variety of formats; the limitations of existing conventions for referencing visual material, which were generally designed for art-historical analysis and are therefore not always appropriate for historical analysis; the difficulty in referencing the type of media and attributing "authorship"—particularly when the source includes a range of media, and finally, the limitations placed on the number of images permitted by publishers. The second half of the article suggests possible solutions for the challenges outlined, including the proposal of a new style manual to provide a consistent and extensive model for referencing visual evidence. Only if such a model were established, could visual imagery be elevated from the status of the merely "illustrative" material to that of important and integral evidence in historical research. The main objective of this work is to know the perception of the undergraduate and master students of the three Galician universities about the plagiarism commission and check the relationship between it and the citation of documentary sources as a criterion for the evaluation of academics works by teachers of the different knowledge areas. The sample is made up of 8.943 students, with an approximate average age of 21 years, approximately 66% of women and from all knowledge areas. To collect the information, the Questionnaire for the Detection of Coincidences in Academic Work (QUDECO) is used. The data indicates that students have a lower predisposition to commit plagiarism in the event that teachers take action on it in the evaluation process.

Bibliometrics has become an essential tool for assessing and analyzing the output of scientists, cooperation between universities, the effect of state-owned science funding on national research and development performance and educational efficiency, among other applications. Therefore, professionals and scientists need a range of theoretical and practical tools to measure experimental data. This review aims to provide an up-to-date review of the various tools available for conducting bibliometric and scientometric analyses, including the sources of data acquisition, performance analysis and visualization tools. The included tools were divided into three categories: general bibliometric and performance analysis, science mapping analysis, and libraries; a description of all of them is provided. A comparative analysis of the database sources support, pre-processing capabilities, analysis and visualization options were also provided in order to facilitate its understanding. Although there are numerous bibliometric databases to obtain data for bibliometric and scientometric analysis, they have been developed for a different purpose. The number of exportable records is between 500 and 50,000 and the coverage of the different science fields is unequal in each database. Concerning the analyzed tools, Bibliometrix contains the more extensive set of techniques and suitable for practitioners through Biblioshiny. VOSviewer has a fantastic visualization and is capable of loading and exporting information from many sources. SciMAT is the tool with a powerful pre-processing and export capability. In views of the variability of features, the users need to decide the desired analysis output and chose the option that better fits into their aims.

Getting cited is important for scholars and for the institutions in which they work. Whether because of the influence on scientific progress or because of the reputation of scholars and their institutions, understanding why some articles are cited more often than others can help scholars write more highly cited articles. This article builds upon earlier literature which identifies seemingly superficial factors that influence the citation rate of articles. Three Journal Citation Report subject categories are analyzed to identify these effects. From a set of 2,016 articles in Sociology, 6,957 articles in General & Internal Medicine, and 23,676 articles in Applied Physics, metadata from the Web of Knowledge was downloaded in addition to PDFs of the full articles. In this article number of words in title, number of pages, number of references, sentences in the abstract, sentences in the paper, number of authors and readability were identified as factors for analysis.
