Separations that occur in the family courts are often characterised by high conflict and lengthy proceedings. For parents with a mental illness, the court can offer additional barriers which may lead to less time with their children and mental distress. This study aimed to (a) identify and critique research relating to parental mental illness in the family courts and (b) understand the experiences of parents with a mental illness who engage with the family courts in parenting matters. This scoping review was conducted on five databases (CINAHL, HeinOnline, ProQuest, PsycInfo and Scopus) following PRISMA-ScR guidelines. The search yielded 5392 unique articles, 12 of which met criteria and were included in this review. These articles included qualitative, quantitative and mixed method studies from family courts located in several countries. Through thematic analysis, four themes were constructed, (1) Actual and perceived influence of parental mental illness on outcomes, (2) Family violence and the courts, (3) The impact of the legal process on parents who have a mental illness, and (4) Supports for parents with a mental illness. The results indicate that parents with a mental illness face many obstacles that impact their ability to engage in the court processes and the outcomes of parenting cases. There were, however, many gaps within the current research. Limitations of the current research and directions for future research in parental mental illness in the family courts are offered. Highlights: Parents with a mental illness involved in parenting disputes perceived that their mental illness negatively impacted their case. Key barriers for parents included the exacerbation of their mental illness during ongoing family law proceedings, the impacts of family violence, and a lack of continuous and sensitive legal representation. Parents indicated that family law professionals and systems need to be informed of the effects of family violence, trauma and mental illness. The importance of engaging families in mental health care is recognised and endorsed by governments worldwide, however service users' perspectives of family involvement are not well understood. This study sought to summarise the literature regarding how service users view the involvement of family in their engagement with services and care. A search was conducted within the following databases for manuscripts published in the last 10 years: PsycINFO, CINAHLPlus, PubMed and Scopus. Of the 4251 eligible papers 17 met the inclusion criteria for review and were subjected to quality appraisal using the RATS (relevance, appropriateness, transparency, soundness) qualitative research review guidelines. Thematic analysis identified four primary themes: family involvement can be positive and negative; barriers to family involvement; family involvement is variable; and communication and collaboration among stakeholders. Identifying the barriers to family involvement and heterogeneity among service users' views were key findings of this review. Despite the widely reported benefits of including families in mental health care it does not always occur. A clearer and more nuanced understanding of service users' needs and preferences for family involvement is required. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: A considerable proportion of people attending mental health services are parents with dependent children. Parental mental illness can be challenging for all family members including the parent's children and partner. The hospitalization of the parent and subsequent separation from dependent children may be a particularly challenging time for all family members. The aim of this paper was to review qualitative studies of family members' experiences when parents, who have dependent children, were hospitalized for their mental illness. The experiences of parents themselves, their children aged 0–18 (including retrospective accounts of adults describing their childhoods), and other family members are included. Methods: This systematic review followed Cochrane Collaboration and PRISMA guidelines. A search was performed with keywords relating to parents, mental illness, psychiatric treatment, inpatient units, family members and experiences. Databases included CINAHL Plus, PsycINFO, ProQuest, MEDLINE, PubMed and Scopus. Quality assessment was undertaken using an expanded version of the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme. Thematic synthesis was conducted on the included papers. Results: Eight papers were identified. The quality assessment was rated as high in some papers, in terms of the clarity of research aims, justification of the methodology employed, recruitment strategy and consideration of ethics. In others, the study design, inclusion criteria and reporting of participant demographics were unclear. Family experiences of pressure and additional responsibilities associated with the parent receiving inpatient treatment were identified along with the family's need for psychoeducational information, and guidance when visiting the parent in hospital. Children expressed various emotions and the need to connect with others. The final theme related to adverse impacts on the parent–child bond when the parent was hospitalized. Conclusion: The limited research in this area indicates that the needs of families are not being met when a parent is hospitalized for their mental illness. There is a considerable need for adequate models of care, family-focused training for staff, and psychoeducational resources for families. A systematic review of qualitative studies was conducted to explore how parents perceive sleep quality in their infants aged 0–24 months and the factors that influence these perceptions. A systematic search of the databases Scopus, Embase, Cinahl, PsycInfo and MEDLINE, was undertaken to identify eligible peer‐reviewed studies published between 2006–2021. Ten papers met inclusion criteria and were subsequently included in the review. Evaluation of papers with the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme qualitative checklist classified papers as weak, moderate or strong, with half considered strong. Thematic synthesis identified one superordinate theme, culture, and five interrelated subordinate themes regarding how parents perceive their infant's sleep and the factors that may influence these perceptions. These themes were: (1) Infants physical and emotional comfort; (2) Beliefs regarding safety; (3) Parental and familial wellbeing; (4) Perceived degree of infant agency; (5) Influence of external beliefs and opinions. The findings from this review may assist practitioners in providing parents with personalized and culturally sensitive information regarding infant sleep and may also inform antenatal and early intervention practices, subsequently minimizing parental distress regarding infant sleep patterns.
