El género Celtis L. (Celtidaceae) comprende unos 70 taxones de árboles o arbustos de regiones templadas y tropicales. En la Argentina habitan cuatro especies, todas pertenecientes al subgénero Mertensia Planch., cuya similitud y variabilidad inter e intraespecíicas han generado confusiones taxonómicas dentro del grupo. Un caso emblemático es el de C. pallida Torr. y C. tala Gillies ex Planch., considerados sinónimos de C. ehrenbergiana (Klotzsch) Liebm. Como estas entidades son claramente diferenciables a campo, se realizó la revisión taxonómica de dichos taxones. Tras un extenso muestreo, un estudio morfológico detallado y a través de un Análisis de Componentes Principales y de Conglomerados, se concluyó que lo considerado en Argentina como C. ehrenbergiana, abarca tres entidades: C. tala, C. pallida var. pallida y C. pallida var. discolor Hunz. & Dottori, y se propone la rehabilitación de dichos taxones. Asimismo, los resultados de los Análisis de la Varianza y de Similitud corroboran diferencias signiicativas (p-valor < 0.05) entre grupos. Se establecieron como caracteres de mayor importancia taxonómica: porte de los individuos, textura de corteza, pilosidad de láminas, nervaduras y pecíolos, espinas estipulares/ramas espinosas, abundancia y aspecto de domacios. Además, algunos especímenes de C. pallida son morfológicamente intermedios entre ambas variedades, por lo cual su identidad será esclarecida por medio del uso de herramientas moleculares. The genus Celtis (Celtidaceae) comprises around 70 temperate to tropical woody taxa . In Argentina there appear four species, all of them belonging in the subgenus Mertensia Planch., whose inter and intraspeciic morphological variability and similarity has generated widespread taxonomic confusions. One of the most emblematic cases is that of C. ehrenbergiana (Klotzsch) Liebm., considered a very ample taxon encompassing both C. pallida Torr. and C. tala Gillies ex Planch. Given that both latter entities are clearly distinguishable in the ield, a morphological and taxonomic revision was performed. After extensive sampling, a detailed morphological study and through a Principal Components and Conglomerates Analysis, it was concluded that what is considered as C. ehrenbergiana in Argentina, actually involves three entities: C. tala, C. pallida var. pallida and C. pallida var. discolor Hunz. & Dottori, and the rehabilitation of those taxa is proposed. The Variance and Similarity Analysis results support signiicant differences (p-value < 0.05) between groups. The following relevant taxonomical characters were established: habit of the individual, bark pattern, pubescence of leaf blades, nerves and petioles, stipular spines/spiny branches, domacia aspect and abundance. Besides, some C. pallida specimens are morphologically intermediate between both varieties, and therefore their proper identity will be clariied through the use of molecular tools. Agricultural expansion and intensification drive the conversion of natural areas worldwide. Scenarios are powerful tools to explore possible future changes in agricultural land use, how these may affect the environment, and how policies may influence land-use patterns. Focusing on Argentina's prime agricultural areas, the Pampas, Espinal and Chaco, we developed spatially-explicit future land-use scenarios from 2010 to 2030, considering both agricultural expansion (i.e., conversions from woodland to either grazing land or cropland) and agricultural intensification (i.e., conversions from grazing land to cropland). Our simulations were based on an econometric model of net returns, which assumes economically rational land-use actors. Using this model, we assessed the rates and spatial patterns of future land-use change under current land zoning in our study region, and contrasted this with a forecast of future land use based on land-conversion rates from 2000–2010. We systematically tested the impact of economic policies (e.g., taxes or subsidies), infrastructure improvement (e.g., road paving), and technological innovation (i.e., yield increases) on the spatial patterns of land-use conversions. Our model suggests future land-use change will mainly happen along intensification pathways, with deforestation slowing down, if land-use actors would be profit-maximizing. This general pattern did not change even for policy interventions that impacted profits from agriculture in major ways, cautioning against overestimating the leverage that economic policies provide for halting deforestation. Improving the region's road network would create a strong incentive to expand cropland further into remaining woodlands and over grazing lands. However, low agricultural profits and higher yields could curb deforestation in marginal areas to some extent. We also highlight that priority areas for conservation are particularly likely to experience high land-use pressure in the future. Given the lower-than-expected power of economic policies to alter deforestation patterns in our models, zoning, if properly enforced, appears to be a more straightforward tool for avoiding unwanted environmental impacts in the Chaco. The central Andean rainforests and the Atlantic Forest are separated by the Chaco and the Cerrado domains. Despite this isolation, diverse evidence suggests that these rainforests have been connected in the past. However, little is known about the timing and geographic positions of these connections, as well as their effects on diversification of species. In this study, we used the Black-goggled Tanager (Trichothraupis melanops, Thraupidae) as a model to study whether the Andean and the Atlantic forests have acted as a refugia system, and to evaluate biogeographic hypotheses of diversification and connection between these rainforests. We compared alternative biogeographic scenarios by using Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC), modeled range shifts across time, and assessed niche divergence between regions. The results indicated that the major phylogeographic gap within T. melanops is located between these rainforests. The ABC analysis supported peripatric diversification, with initial dispersal from the Atlantic Forest to the Andes during the Mid-Pleistocene. Also, the results supported an Andean-Atlantic forests connection through the current Cerrado-Chaco transition, linking the southern Atlantic Forest with the central Andes. Our findings, taken together with other studies, support that the connection between these biomes has been recurrent, and that has occurred mostly through the Cerrado and/or the Cerrado-Chaco transition. The data also support that the connection dynamic has played an important role in the biological diversification, by promoting peripatric divergence in some forest taxa restricted to both biomes. Insect parasitism patterns are influenced by vegetation structure and landscape complexity. Our objective was to examine the effects of vegetation structure and landscape complexity on parasitism based on direct measurements of structure and diversity indices as well as on metrics based on remote sensing using Quickbird images. We collected 2266 lepidopteran larvae and pupae, including different families and habits, to estimate parasitism, and recorded vegetation characteristics in five 100-m2 transects and 18 1 ha-plots in the dry Chaco, Northwest Argentina. We calculated landscape metrics and semivariograms in the plots from the image. The plots represented four “complexity groups”: agricultural, riparian/hedgerow, bare ground, and forest plots. Mean parasitism in the study sites was 10.7% (min: 0%, max: 23%). Parasitism was highest in agricultural plots, lowest in forest plots, and intermediate in riparian/hedgerow and bare ground plots. The landscape model explained parasitism more than the vegetation model. The landscape final model included Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) Range, a measure of landscape heterogeneity, and Mean Shape Index, a measure of patch shape irregularity, and their interaction. The vegetation model included basal area and the Coefficient of Variation of tree density among transects, a measure of tree spatial distribution within a plot. Our results agree with previous studies that found higher parasitism in agricultural vs. non-agricultural environments in the subtropics, while riparian/hedgerow plots were important for conserving parasitism, as reported for temperate environments. We showed that under-explored tools such as the semivariogram and satellite band combinations were useful for the assessment of parasitism and that studying vegetation and landscape complexity simultaneously can help us examine mechanisms in detail. The open vegetation biomes, within the limits of the Chacoan subregion, occur along a diagonal in eastern South America covering a large range of environmental conditions. In order to contribute to the knowledge on the biodiversity of these open biomes, we analysed the phylogenetic relationships of the grasshopper genus Zoniopoda to the remaining South American Romaleinae, and examined the biogeographical patterns of diversification of the genus. The study is based on morphological and molecular (COI and H3) evidence, including 12 species of Zoniopoda and 17 species of four tribes of South American Romaleinae. We describe a new species of Zoniopoda, and test its taxonomic placement within the group. Results of our phylogenetic analyses recovered Zoniopoda as a monophyletic group with high support values. According to the dispersion–vicariance analysis, the ancestor of Zoniopoda may have been distributed in an area corresponding to the Chacoan and Cerrado provinces. A vicariant event, that could be explained by the uplift of the Brazilian Plateau and the subsidence of the Chaco, is hypothesized to have occurred splitting the ancestral distribution of Zoniopoda, resulting in the independent evolution of the Tarsata group within the Cerrado and the Iheringi group in the Chacoan subregion. Durante el estudio monográfico del género Schinopsis (Anacardiaceae) se realizó una revisión nomenclatural de sus especies y sinónimos. Se lectotipifican los nombres Schinopsis brasiliensis, S. brasiliensis var. glabra, S. heterophylla, S. marginata y S. peruviana y se indican algunos casos de lectotipificaciones desapercibidas en trabajos previos. Se designa un epitipo para S. haenkeana, entidad considerada hasta ahora como taxón dudoso. During the monographic study of the genus Schinopsis (Anacardiaceae) a nomenclatural revision of its species and synonyms was performed. The names Schinopsis brasiliensis, S. brasiliensis var. glabra, S. heterophylla, S. marginata, and S. peruviana are lectotypified, and some cases of inadvertent lectotypifications in previous works are indicated. En el presente artículo se aplicaron diferentes métodos y técnicas para la generación y caracterización de información temática referida a las coberturas espaciales de un sector de la provincia de Chaco (Argentina). Mediante el cálculo de la transformación Tasseled Cap, se estimaron las variables de brillo, verdor y humedad y se aplicó una clasificación supervisada con el método Support Vector Machines (SVM). Finalmente se evaluó la exactitud de la clasificación. En una segunda etapa se caracterizaron las coberturas del suelo identificadas según los criterios de brillo, verdor y humedad empleando métodos de superposición y resumen estadístico con Sistemas de Información Geográfica (SIG). La aplicación de esta metodología demostró potencial para identificar y explicar el comportamiento de las coberturas en las variables de brillo, verdor y humedad. In the present article different methods and techniques were applied for the generation and characterization of thematic information in a sector of the province of Chaco (Argentina). Using the calculation of the Tasseled Cap Transformation, the variables of brightness, greenness and humidity were calculated. In addition, a supervised classification was applied through support vector machines (SVM) and then the classification accuracy was estimated. According to the criteria of brightness, greenness and humidity, land cover classes were characterized using methods of superposition and statistical summary with Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The first Argentinian record of Eustala vellardi Mello-Leitão, 1924 is provided, extending the known distribution of this species in South America. Also, variations in the colour patterns of the opisthosoma are described for males and females. Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) programs are increasingly emphasized to address challenges of conserving forests. However, concerns remain regarding the ability of PES programs to ensure long-term conservation of threatened lands. Evaluation of large-scale PES programs, including the spatial and temporal patterns of enrollment, is scarce, especially for programs that aim to protect forest from severe threats such as expansion of industrial agriculture. Using information on PES enrollment across 252,319 km2 in the Argentine Chaco, we examined both the duration for which lands are enrolled in PES and their suitability for agriculture. Specifically, we examined whether the PES program has resulted in adverse selection not only in space but also in time. We built spatially explicit generalized linear models using information on participants’ length of contract and the potential of their land for agricultural use. We found the PES program enrolled land in areas with high agricultural potential, but enrollment of these lands occurred for shorter time periods than lands with lower levels of threat from deforestation. Consequently, adverse selection occurred over time but not in space. Our work demonstrates the importance of evaluating both temporal and spatial dimensions of adverse selection in PES for informing policy. Fil: Núñez Regueiro, Mauricio Manuel. University of Florida. Se presenta un estudio interdisciplinar que indaga diferentes procesos de interacción y apropiación de pobladores rurales hacia la naturaleza. El objetivo general consistió en realizar una caracterización etnoecológica de los conocimientos, los usos y las prácticas de conservación y manejo de la biodiversidad de interés para la subsistencia de la población rural de áreas protegidas (AP) de la ecorregión Chaco Seco de Córdoba. Este trabajo, se llevó a cabo en el Parque Nacional Quebrada del Condorito (PNQC) y la Reserva Provincial de Uso Múltiple Salinas Grandes (RPUMSG) e inmediaciones. Desde este enfoque se lograron recabar diferentes aspectos perceptuales, valoraciones y significaciones de distintos actores sociales en relación a la conservación, las problemáticas ambientales y cambios en el entorno.A nivel metodológico se combinaron herramientas de las ciencias naturales y sociales. Para el acercamiento hacia los pobladores locales, se recurrió a muestreos en bola de nieve, muestreo intencional de informantes calificados y selección de casos típicos o paradigmáticos para el contraste; la información se obtuvo por medio de entrevistas semiestructuradas, entrevistas abiertas, extensas y en profundidad, observación participante y registros etnográficos de manifestaciones observacionales, verbales y no verbales. Además, se realizaron recorridos en las áreas con pobladores locales para la identificación de especies y prácticas de manejo. De igual manera se trabajó en la instancia de consulta con bases de datos y material documental a su vez, se utilizaron indicadores socioculturales para la caracterización de la población entrevistada.En línea con los objetivos específicos planteados: a) se caracterizaron y analizaron las representaciones y percepciones de la población en cuanto a la valoración de paisajes locales, problemáticas ambientales para la conservación, importancia y disfrute de AP, y conocimiento sobre prácticas ambientales en AP; b) se desarrolló un inventario de especies de flora y fauna en las regiones de estudio, considerando las menciones de los pobladores locales acerca de su importancia, su relevancia para la conservación, la percepción de retracción y de su necesidad de control/eliminación; c) se documentó el conocimiento, significación, uso y prácticas de manejo de las especies relevantes identificando especies y familias de importancia etnobiológica para la subsistencia y, comparar ambas áreas protegidas; y d) se evaluaron las prioridades locales de conservación considerando las aplicaciones y usos más frecuentes de las especies claves identificadas y, comparando el conocimiento etnoecológico tradicional documentado, con las consideraciones de los estudios ecológicos disponibles para las zonas en estudio.El análisis cualitativo consistió en la toma de fragmentos de expresiones de las entrevistas abiertas y en profundidad y registros de diarios de campo, los que fueron luego codificados de acuerdo con categorías temáticas emergentes que dieran cuenta de las temáticas recurrentes, el consenso o pluralidad de visiones en torno a estos recursos, en cada una de las áreas de estudio. Para el análisis cuantitativo, se crearon bases de datos con el programa Excel conteniendo categorías de análisis de interés etnobiológico (taxón, identidad, origen, aplicaciones, partes empleadas y formas de aprovechamiento, frecuencia de mención por informante, etc.) y se realizó una caracterización general mediante gráficos y estimaciones de estadística descriptiva.Para el caso de la RPUMSG se registro un total de 94 especies vegetales en su mayoría nativas con un amplio espectro de usos (alimenticio, medicinal, construcción, leña, etc.); con respecto a la fauna silvestre fueron citadas 61 especies predominando aquellas de origen nativo, con diversos tipos de uso (alimenticio, medicinal, ornamental, mascotismo, etc.). Aquellos taxones con valoraciones negativas se asociaron con una ?irrelevante utilidad? en el caso de la flora y con efectos perjudiciales en actividades productivas para el caso de la fauna (especies conflicto).En el PNQC, la población entrevistada citó 54 especies vegetales, la mayoría nativas, predominando aquellas con usos en leña y madera; en fauna fue también menciono un total de 54 especies, teniendo mayor relevancia aquellas especies representativas localmente por su rol ecológico o su carácter emblemático. Las especies silvestres tanto animales como vegetales consideradas bajo el criterio de control/eliminación fueron especialmente las introducidas.De acuerdo al contexto sociocultural y ambiental diferenciado entre las áreas de estudio, por un lado, los habitantes de las inmediaciones de la RPUMSG se caracterizan por ser en su mayoría actores sociales nativos con un perfil de subsistencia, relacionándose de manera amplia, directa y constante con su entorno más próximo. Por lo tanto, la conservación de especies se encuentra estrechamente vinculada con la continuidad de uso del recurso en el tiempo.Por otra parte, los pobladores del PNQC, enfatizan en saberes y prácticas instituidas por el sistema de parques nacionales, manifestando una perspectiva proteccionista hacia la naturaleza, con una menor tendencia al aprovechamiento de la misma. Asimismo, las problemáticas ambientales citadas por los entrevistados, dependieron del área y tipo de actor, y fueron percibidas e interpretadas por la población nativa desde lo sensorial, mientras que los agentes de conservación lo hicieron con mayor especificidad y desde su bagaje teórico-científico. La información obtenida permite vislumbrar orientaciones a nivel sociocultural y ambiental, como aportes para la conservación y el manejo de la biodiversidad en las áreas protegidas trabajadas y sus alrededores. Bothrops es un género de serpientes de la familia Viperidae que tiene una amplia distribución en Sudamérica. De alrededor de 45 especies conocidas de este género, 14 se distribuyen a lo largo de una Diagonal de Areas Abiertas Sudamericanas (DAAS) que atraviesa desde el nordeste de Brasil hasta el centro de Argentina, incluyendo al Chaco, el Cerrado y la Caatinga. Dada la importancia de las especies del género Bothrops, se analizó algunos aspectos de la ecología, distribución y conservación de estas serpientes en la DAAS. Se determinó la distribución potencial de cada especie utilizando modelos de adecuabilidad de nicho, en base a los registros de las especies y datos bioclimáticos obtenidos de la base de datos de Worldclim. La distribución de las especies estuvo principalmente relacionada a la Isotermalidad y las lluvias y temperatura de los meses más cálidos y secos, un reflejo del clima altamente estacional predominante en las tres regiones de la DAAS. La riqueza, diversida filogenética y funcional tuvieron el mismo patrón de mayores índices en el Cerrdo, después Caatinga y por último el Chaco. Se modeló también la distribución de las espcies en el futuro, utilizando cuatro modelos generales de circulación y dos escenarios de emisión de carbono en dos periodos, para obtener un panorama detallado de la variablidad y los posibles escenarios futuros. Los modelos futuros mostraron un panorama pesimista para la mayoría de las especies estudiadas, con reducciones de hasta el 60% en su distribución. Para algunas especies está la posibilidad de ganar hasta el 16% de área. La distribución de las especies recortada por los remanentes de vegetación también evidenció la enorme magnitud de la pérdida de hábitat a lo largo de las tres ecorregiones, con tasas de deforestación aún mayores que las de selvas tropicales. Algunas especies, como B. itapetiningae y B. alternatus tuvieron reducciones de su área originia de distribución de hasta un 65 %. Se utilizó los criterios de la IUCN para evaluar el grado de amenaza de las Bothrops de la DAAS. Trece de las 14 especies fueron clasificadas como Vulnerables o Amenzada. En el caso específico de B. itapetiningae, su pérdida de vegetación, la pérdida proyectada para el futuro y su baja representatividad en áreas protegidas, sumado a su importancia como parte de un clado basal en la filogenia, la ubican como una de las principales prioridades en consevación. Kavinia chacoserrana is described as a new species based on morphological data and molecular evidence. The species is characterized by its white to pale yellowish hydnoid hymenophore and cylindrical to fusiform basidiospores measured as 10-12 × 3-4 μm. The replacement of natural vegetation by pastures and extensive crops is generally driven by economic incentives and supported by technology improvements and multiple subsidies. However, towards areas of increasing aridity the productive performance of these replacements may decline from all perspectives – ecological to agronomic to economic – due to intrinsic differences in the structural and physiological adjustment of natural and cultivated vegetation to reduced and fluctuating water availability. We compare natural woody vegetation, perennial C4 pastures and annual crops (maize, soybean and wheat) along a gradient of decreasing precipitation (900–400 mm of annual mean) encompassing the current agricultural frontier of the Dry Chaco and Western Espinal ecoregions of South America. We assess (i) aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) (ii) yields of product dry mass, edible energy and protein outputs and, (iii) economic gross profits and return of investment. We linked climatic with yield data from national statistics, field trials and empiric models, together with productive parameters and market prices obtained from local consultants and economic bulletins. Maize achieved the highest ANPP of all vegetation covers (+ 42% in average compared to the rest) along the entire precipitation gradient, while the rest of the crops were very similar to natural vegetation. Pastures approached the ANPP of natural vegetation in the humid range, but had the lowest performance below 700 mm (− 15%). Along the entire precipitation gradient, maize was outstanding in mass and edible energy yield while soybean was so in protein production. Soybean had the highest gross profit per hectare (+ 50%) and total capital return of investment (+ 70%). Pastures offered the highest functional capital return of investment (+ 98%; without fixed capital, infrastructure and land value costs), explaining their relevance at the onset of the deforestation process and the gradual prevalence of crops afterwards. While agronomic and economic incentives for natural vegetation replacement remain strong along the whole aridity gradient, crop choice rather than land use system seem to shape the key ecological process of net primary productivity. Plant uptake of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) has been proposed to explain inconsistency in the ecosystem N balance of semi-arid systems. Nevertheless, direct evidence for an ecologically important role of DON in plant nutrition in these systems remains elusive under field conditions. Here, natural abundance 15N signatures of NO3−, NH4+, DON and whole plants from a semi-arid model forest were analyzed to provide robust estimates of plant N source partitioning and relative N cycling rates under in-situ conditions. Concurrently, architectural and symbiotic root traits were determined to assess their relationship to plant N acquisition strategies. Bayesian isotope mixing models indicated an insignificant contribution of DON to ecosystem plant N nutrition. Nitrate was the dominant plant N source in this ecosystem, while the contribution of NH4+ to plant nutrition varied between herbaceous (26%) and woody plants (8%). The low C:N ratio of the dissolved organic matter pool - ranging from 12.7 to 4.9 within the soil profile ? indicated microbial C-limitation in this ecosystem. Dissolved organic N was significantly enriched in 15N relative to NH4+ and NO3−, corroborating the importance of dissolved organic matter recycling as a cost-effective pathway that simultaneously supplies C and nutrients for microbial metabolism. Plants exclusively depend on inorganic N forms made available through microbial N mineralization and free-living atmospheric N2 fixation, followed by autotrophic nitrification. Fil: Huygens, D.. The giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) is currently found in a wide variety of habitats from Honduras to Argentina. Across this wide range, researchers have postulated that anteater populations arenegatively affected by several factors, including hunting, habitat loss and fragmentation, fire, vehicle collisions, and predation by jaguars. But no studies to date have evaluated the relative importance of thesefactors across sites, either at a regional or continental scale. We used camera traps to analyze variationin giant anteater abundance at two spatial scales. At a regional scale, we conducted camera trap surveysin the dry Chaco of Argentina and used occupancy models to explore the effect of protection status andhuman accessibility on giant anteaters? relative abundance. At a continental scale, we used data from 40camera trap studies (representing 42 different locations) and Generalized Linear Models (GLM) to assessthe potential relation of biome, human disturbance and the presence of jaguars on giant anteater cameratrap records. In the Argentine Chaco, protection and human disturbance do not significantly affect theproportion of area used by the species. The average anteater records/100 camera days and the proportionof sites used are very high across the study area. At a continental scale, anteaters are more frequentlyrecorded in dry forests than in moist forests. Locations with very high human disturbance have cameratrap rates that are 5?10 times lower compared to intermediate or low disturbance locations. Finally, giantanteater capture frequency increases up to 70% where jaguars are absent. Dry biomes and intermediatelevels of human disturbance may favor anteaters by providing greater habitat heterogeneity coupledwith a lower jaguar abundance. This may explain the relatively high abundance of giant anteaters in theArgentine Chaco. However, growing human populations, the advancing agriculture-livestock frontier,and an expanding road network may in time eliminate giant anteaters from most of this region. Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiological agent of Chagas disease, was initially classified into 6 Discrete Typing Units (DTUs). The hybrid DTUs TcV and TcVI are the most frequent in domestic transmission cycles throughout the Southern Cone countries of South America. Here, we genotyped parasite isolates from human residents in Pampa del Indio municipality, Chaco, to further characterize the structure of T. cruzi populations, and to assess the degree of overlapping between the domestic and sylvatic transmission cycles. Artificial xenodiagnostic tests were performed to blood samples from 125 T. cruzi-seropositive people (age range, 3–70 years) who represented 14.3% of all seropositive residents identified. Parasites were obtained from feces of T. cruzi-infected Triatoma infestans examined 30 or 60 days after blood-feeding, and grown in vitro. The cultured parasites were genotyped by means of two PCR-based protocols. DTUs were determined from 39 (31%) patients residing in 28 dwellings. The only DTUs identified were TcV (92%) and TcVI (8–36%). Households with more than one parasite isolate consistently displayed the same DTU. Further sequencing of a fragment of the TcMK gene from selected samples argue against the occurrence of mixed TcV-TcVI infections in the study population. Sequencing data revealed an unexpected degree of genetic variability within TcV including two apparently robust subgroups of isolates. Our results for human residents confirm the predominance of hybrid lineages (TcV and to a much lesser extent TcVI) and the absence of sylvatic genotypes (TcI and TcIII) in (peri)domestic transmission cycles in the Argentinean Chaco area. The present paper provides new records for Zygoptera and Anisoptera collected in the central and northern regions of western Argentina (23° to 30°S latitude), including the biogeographical provinces of Puna, Monte, Chaco and Yungas. Nineteen sampling sites were visited at least once. New geographical records for 20 species are reported, including three new national records for Argentina - Gynacantha mexicana Selys, Rhionaeschna cornigera (Brauer) and Triacanthagyna caribbea Williamson - and 19 new provincial records from 17 species. Two of them involve large range expansions since they were previously known only from the east of the country, viz. Brachymesia herbida (Gundlach) and Macrothemis hemichlora (Burmeister). Leaf-cutting ants are key organisms because their role as primary consumers and potential agricultural pests. However, their foraging ecology was mostly studied as response of extrinsic factors such as climate and plant species traits. We evaluated the effects of intrinsic factors (i. e., nest size and species identity) on the foraging behavior in two species of Acromyrmex Mayr leaf-cutting ants. While large and small nests of A. lobicornis Emery showed similar feeding behavior, small nests of A. striatus Roger harvested a greater percent of the plant species available in their foraging area and showed a higher level of selectivity than larger nests. We discussed some probable reasons for this pattern. Indigenous Wichís and mestizos Criollos inhabit a rural, biodiversity rich, area of the Argentinean Dry Chaco. Traditionally, Wichís were nomads and their relations with wildlife were shaped by animistic and shamanic beliefs. Today, Wichís live in stable communities and practice subsistence hunting, gathering and in some cases, fishing. Criollos are mestizos, i.e. a mixture of the first Spanish settlers and different indigenous groups. They arrived during the 20th century from neighbouring Provinces. They practice extensive ranching, hunting and gathering. Our aim was to help develop effective and legitimate actions to conserve wildlife species in this region, focused on Wichís' and Criollos' perceptions of and relations with wildlife. We conducted semistructured interviews (N=105) in rural settlements. We found differences in both groups' hunting techniques, drivers and perceptions on the importance of wild meat for nutrition. However, both groups have a close relation with wildlife, they use wild animals in a variety of ways, including as food resource, medicine and predictors of future events. Wichís and Criollos also relate with wildlife in a spiritual dimension, have animistic and shamanic beliefs and have unique traditional ecological knowledge. Hunters in both communities are breaking traditional hunting norms but conservation measures grounded on these norms have a higher probability of success. Management recommendations include developing programmes focused on (i) conserving thin armadillos; (ii) conserving pregnant and breeding females of all species; (iii) managing dogs to avoid unnecessary killings and on (iv) improving local livelihoods. En forma creciente, los ecólogos somos llamados a desempeñar un rol más activo en la gestión de losrecursos naturales y en la planificación de los ecosistemas y paisajes rurales de nuestro país. La efectividad de lagestión y planificación depende mayormente de la capacidad para transformar los comportamientos humanosque más influyen sobre el estado de los ecosistemas y los paisajes. Por lo tanto, la capacidad de los procesosy resultados de la investigación en ecología para transformar la realidad de los territorios se puede potenciaral integrarlos con elementos conceptuales y metodológicos de las ciencias del comportamiento humano. Enel territorio, los cambios en el uso y cobertura de la tierra son el resultado de una multiplicidad de decisionesque toman quienes afectan de manera directa a los ecosistemas y a aquellos que se benefician de ellos, en sumayoría productores agropecuarios. El presente trabajo revisa teorías, conceptos, métodos y aplicaciones dela psicología social para visibilizar y poner en debate sus aportes reales y potenciales a la investigación y lagestión de ecosistemas y paisajes rurales sujetos a transformación por la agricultura, los que son ilustradoscon estudios en el Chaco Seco argentino. La teoría del comportamiento planificado demostró ser un modeloconceptual y analítico de gran valor sinóptico para comprender los factores motivacionales endógenos queinfluyen sobre la formación de las intenciones de conservar por parte de productores agropecuarios. Lavaloración social de servicios ecosistémicos permitió observar la diversidad de identidades y de perfiles devaloración que coexisten en el territorio. Finalmente, la superposición de curvas de compromiso e indiferenciamostró ser una herramienta simple y poderosa para vincular los compromisos ecológicos con los conflictosde preferencias, y para identificar barreras y oportunidades que le permitan a los productores agropecuariosrealizar una transición hacia sistemas eficientes y aceptables de uso de la tierra. Contributions of human behavior study to the research and management of rural ecosystems and landscapes. In our country, ecologists are increasingly called to play a more active role in natural resource management and in rural ecosystem and landscape planning. The effectiveness of management and planning depends to a large extent on the ability to transform the human behaviors that most influence the state of ecosystems and landscapes. Therefore, the capacity of research processes and results in ecology to transform the reality of territories can be enhanced by its integration with conceptual and methodological elements of the human behavioral sciences. In the territory, changes in land use and land cover are the result of a multiplicity of decisions made by those individuals that affect and benefit from ecosystems, mostly farmers. This paper reviews theories, concepts, methods and applications of social psychology to make visible and discuss their real and potential contributions to the research and management of rural ecosystems and landscapes subject to transformation by agriculture, which are illustrated by studies in the Argentine Dry Chaco. The Theory of Planned Behavior proved to be a conceptual and analytical model of great synoptic value to understand the endogenous motivational factors that influence the formation of intentions to conserve remnant forests by agricultural producers. The social valuation of ecosystem services made it possible to observe the diversity of identities and valuation profiles that coexist in the territory. La regulación de la temperatura corporal en los lagartos juega un rol clave para la supervivencia de las especies. Su condición fisiológica, en referencia a su dependencia de la temperatura ambiente, los convierte en un excelente modelo de estudio. Estos organismos pueden beneficiarse de la habilidad de producir fenotipos alternativos en diferentes ambientes, ajustando su fisiología a un rango de condiciones ambientales. El objetivo de este trabajo fue determinar en una población de Liolaemus chacoensis y en sus segmentos intrapoblacionales la existencia de flexibilidad en sus parámetros termofisiológicos y en el desempeño locomotor asociado a la variación de la temperatura ambiental. Además, se probó la influencia de un tipo de plasticidad fenotípica, la aclimatación térmica, poniendo a prueba la hipótesis de aclimatación beneficiosa. Para ello, los individuos fueron capturados a mano. Luego se realizaron los estudios de campo y laboratorio: termoecología de campo, efectividad termorregulatoria y tolerancia térmica. También, se calcularon los parámetros de dos componentes de desempeño locomotor: velocidad de carrera y resistencia, determinando la curva de desempeño térmico para L. chacoensis. Esta metodología se utilizó tanto en los ensayos con y sin aclimatación. El ensayo de aclimatación se realizó al calor (35° C) y al frío (21° C). Los resultados indican que L. chacoensis se comportaría como un termorregulador moderado. Al analizar los diferentes segmentos poblacionales se observó una marcada heterogeneidad estacional en la biología térmica de L. chacoensis. La temperatura óptima (Tópt) en los lagartos aclimatados fue menor a la Tópt de los lagartos no aclimatados, ubicándose 3° C por debajo. La amplitud de desempeño fue de 26° C en individuos no aclimatados. Este amplio margen sugiere un modelo de curva de desempeño del tipo generalista. Sin embargo luego de la aclimatación los parámetros térmicos fisiológicos como las temperaturas voluntarias, temperaturas preferidas y el rango intercuartil de Tpref se modificaron. Con respecto a la temperatura preferida se observó un aumento independientemente de la temperatura de aclimatación. El rango de tolerancia térmica disminuye luego de los ensayos de aclimatación, esta respuesta podría reflejar una menor tolerancia a los cambios climáticos y por lo tanto situar a L. chacoensis como más vulnerable al cambio climático global. En cuanto al desempeño locomotor, la resistencia máxima de los lagartos aclimatados aumentó. Estos resultados sugieren que Liolaemus chacoensis puede también utilizar la aclimatación como una estrategia adaptativa para responder a la variación térmica ambiental. Lo obtenido en este trabajo muestra que la hipótesis de aclimatación beneficiosa se cumple parcialmente, porque no todos los aspectos abordados en este estudio mostraron un aumento o mejora. The long-nosed armadillos of the Dasypus genus are the richest and more widespread extant xenarthra. In 1933, the prominent Argentinean mammalogist José Yepes studied specimens collected by Salvador Mazza and named a new species: D. mazzai. Several authors interpreted that the holotype of the species was a juvenile of D. novemcinctus. In 1995, Vizcaíno support the synonymy with D. novemcinctus but accepted the existence of an endemic species of northwestern Argentina that dedicated to Yepes (D. yepesi). Morphological studies have questioned the synonymy of the species with D. novemcinctus. In this contribution we reviewed the identity of the type material by sequencing a DNA fragment of 212 bp, product of the 16S ribosomal unit of Dasypodidae. Both samples of the holotype (bone and muscle) and of a specimen from the north of Santa Fe province have a 100% similarity with the D. yepesi / D. sabanicola sequences available in the GenBank. These results indicate that the type specimen of D. mazzai is neither a D. novemcinctus nor another species of the Dasypus genus previously named. Dasypus mazzai is revalidated and the eastern boundary in the Chaco region is confirm Las mulitas del género Dasypus, representan el género más rico (siete especies) y ampliamente distribuido de los xenartros actuales. En 1933 el destacado mastozoólogo José V. Yepes estudió los especímenes colectados por Salvador Mazza y nominó una nueva especie: D. mazzai. Varios autores interpretaron que el holotipo era un ejemplar juvenil de D. novemcinctus. En 1995, Vizcaíno aceptó la sinonimia con D. novemcinctus , pero reconoció la existencia de una especie endémica del noroeste de Argentina que dedicó a Yepes (D. yepesi) . La secuenciación del mitogenoma de ejemplares del hipodigma de D. mazzai y estudios morfológicos han cuestionado la sinonimia de esta especie con D. novencinctus. En esta contribución se revisó la identidad del material tipo secuenciando un fragmento de DNA de 212 bp, producto de la unidad ribosomal 16S de Dasypodidae. Ambas muestras del holotipo (hueso y músculo) y de un espécimen del norte de Santa Fe presentan 100% de similitud con secuencias de D. yepesi/D. sabanicola disponibles en el GenBank. Los resultados indican que el ejemplar tipo de D. mazzai no es un juvenil de D. novemcinctus ni de otra de las especies del género Dasypus previamente nominadas. Se revalida D. mazzai y se confirma el límite oriental, de su distribución en la región chaqueña. La resiliencia, definida como la capacidad de un sistema de volver a la situación inicial luego de sufrir un disturbio, es una propiedad clave para asegurar la continuidad de la estructura y el funcionamiento de los ecosistemas en el tiempo. Se ha propuesto que la resiliencia de los ecosistemas terrestres dependería de diversas ?fuentes de resiliencia? propias de las comunidades vegetales, siendo algunas de las más importantes: (1) capacidad de recuperación de las especies dominantes determinada por sus estrategias de adquisición de recursos que definen la diversidad funcional de la comunidad, (2) capacidad de mantener un reservorio de las especies dominantes a partir del banco de semillas y juveniles, y (3) capacidad para retener semillas en el suelo y favorecer su germinación y establecimiento in situ. La modificación de alguna de estas ?fuentes de resiliencia? por parte de factores externos, como el uso de la tierra, podría comprometer la resiliencia de los ecosistemas. En el bosque chaqueño de Córdoba existe un acelerado proceso de modificación del ecosistema generado por los cambios en el uso de la tierra, dando como resultado un paisaje compuesto de parches de diferentes configuraciones ecosistémicas. El objetivo de la presente tesis fue analizar la resiliencia de diferentes configuraciones ecosistémicas del bosque chaqueño de Córdoba, sometidas a diferentes intensidades de uso de la tierra, a través del análisis de propiedades de sus comunidades vegetales y evaluar su asociación con las fuentes de resiliencia. Se propuso que existe una relación directa entre la conservación de las fuentes de resiliencia y la resiliencia frente al uso de la tierra. .Dentro del área de estudio, se identificaron 4 configuraciones asociadas a distintas intensidades de uso (bosque primario, bosque secundario, arbustal mixto y jarillal). En cada una de las 4 réplicas de cada configuración se instaló una parcela clausurada de 6 x 6 m para excluir la vegetación del disturbio provocado por el uso de la tierra y se demarcó una parcela vecina (abierta) de iguales dimensiones que sirvió de control. En cada una de las parcelas (clausurada y abierta), durante 4 años consecutivos, se realizó un relevamiento de la cobertura de todas las especies de plantas presentes. Se analizó el cambio de diferentes propiedades de las comunidades vegetales de cada configuración (estructura vegetal, composición florística y reclutamiento de individuos leñosos) entre el primer y último año luego de la exclusión, a través del cálculo del efecto de clausura (diferencia entre la parcela clausurada y abierta) y la resiliencia (acercamiento de las características de la parcela clausurada a las del bosque primario). A su vez se realizaron relevamientos de cada una de las fuentes de resiliencia antes mencionadas. Posteriormente se investigó el grado de asociación entre la resiliencia de las diferentes propiedades de las comunidades con los indicadores de cada una de las fuentes.El efecto de clausura no mostró resultados contundentes que apoyen la hipótesis propuesta. La resiliencia de la composición florística mostró valores que indicaron un alejamiento del jarillal y el arbustal mixto en relación al bosque primario. Contrario al resultado anterior, la resiliencia del reclutamiento de individuos mostró un acercamiento del jarillal al bosque primario. El bosque secundario no mostró cambios sustanciales luego de la instalación de la clausura. Por otro lado, el jarillal fue la configuración que mostró mayor efecto del uso sobre las fuentes de resiliencia. La resiliencia de las diferentes propiedades de la vegetación establecida mostró en general una relación positiva con las fuentes, mientras que la resiliencia del reclutamiento de individuos leñosos mostró una relación negativa. Estos resultados no se ajustan estrictamente a lo planteado por la hipótesis propuesta, pero los mismos son sugerentes de un efecto del uso sobre la resiliencia del bosque a través de su efecto sobre las fuentes, ya que algunas de las variables analizadas respondieron de la manera esperada. A su vez, remarcan la importancia de que el análisis de la resiliencia sea abordado a través del estudio simultáneo de distintas variables claves, en este caso, las diferentes propiedades de las comunidades vegetales. La inclusión de variables relacionadas con la estructura y otras relacionadas con la composición florística permitió observar que no todas se comportan de la misma manera ante la suspensión del uso de la tierra, mostrando diferentes tasas e inclusive diferentes direcciones en la respuesta. Nausigaster flukei Curran is recorded for the first time from Argentina. New specimens were collected in Mendoza, Jujuy and La Rioja provinces (Argentina), in the Monte and Chaco Phytogeographical Provinces. New records broaden the distribution of this species previously known from Paraguay and south Brazil and represent the first record of the genus Nausigaster from Argentina since 1892. In this contribution, we reassess the identity of Stemodia lanceolata (Plantaginaceae) and confirm its occurrence in Brazilian territory. We present a detailed and updated description, a fine illustration, and photographs of this species, along with comments on its distribution, habitat and phenology, and notes on taxonomic affinities. Stemodia lanceolata is characterized by its stiffy erect terminal inflorescence with filamentous aspect due to the long, linear-triangular, frequently out-curved floral bracts. Finally, we propose second-step lectotypifications for three names subordinated to S. lanceolata. The progressive exploitation and destruction of nesting habitat in recent years, combined with the substantial pressure from legal and illegal removal of wild nestlings and adults, justifies the development of a comprehensive study on the reproductive biology of the Turquoise-fronted Parrot (Amazona aestiva). We analyzed breeding parameters in a wild protected population of Turquoise-fronted Parrots in the Chaco forest, Argentina, examining variation among years, over the course of the breeding season, and in relation to the age of the nest. Mean clutch-size per nesting attempt was 3.68 eggs. Hatching success (proportion of eggs laid that hatch) was 0.73. Fledging success (proportion of nestlings that fledge) was 0.88. The overall breeding success (mean number of fledglings per laying female per year) was 0.95. Clutch size did not vary among years but it decreased with the delay of the nest initiation date. Hatching failure was the greatest cause of egg partial losses, and brood reduction was the main cause of nestling partial loses. Brood reduction was positively correlated with clutch size and with egg-laying date. We did not find interannual variation in any of the clutch or brood size variables. Our results showed that the population of Turquoise-fronted Parrots in the dry Chaco forest has high values of clutch size and nestling survival, and low values of hatching success. However, some aspects of the breeding biology need more attention, especially if the species continues to be harvested. L'exploitation et la destruction progressives de l'habitat de nidification advenues ces récentes années, combinées à la pression élevée de captures légale et illégale d'oisillons et d'adultes sauvages, justifient la mise en place d'une étude globale sur la biologie de reproduction de l'Amazone à front bleu (Amazona aestiva). Nous avons analysé les paramètres de reproduction d'une population sauvage protégée de cette amazone dans la forêt du Chaco, en Argentine, examinant les variations interannuelles, tout au long de la saison de reproduction, en relation avec l'âge du nid. La taille moyenne de la ponte par tentative de nidification était de 3,68 oeufs. Le succès d'éclosion (proportion d'oeufs pondus qui ont éclos) était de 0,73. Le succès à l'envol (proportion de jeunes qui ont pris leur envol) était de 0,88. Le succès de nidification d'ensemble (nombre moyen de jeunes à l'envol par femelle nicheuse par année) était de 0,95. La taille de la ponte n'a pas varié d'une année à l'autre, mais était plus faible lorsque la date d'initiation du nid était retardée. L'échec de l'éclosion était la cause la plus importante de perte partielle d'oeufs et une couvée réduite était la cause principale de perte partielle d'oisillons. La couvée réduite était positivement corrélée avec la taille de la ponte et la date de celle-ci. Nous n'avons pas observé de variations interannuelles des variables relatives à la taille de la ponte ou de la couvée. Nos résultats indiquent que la population de l'Amazone à front bleu de la forêt sèche du Chaco montre des valeurs élevées de la taille de ponte et de la survie des oisillons, mais des valeurs faibles du succès d'éclosion. Néanmoins, nous pensons qu'il serait important de se pencher davantage sur certains éléments de la biologie de reproduction de l'espèce, particulièrement si elle continue d'être prélevée. Homonota is a Neotropical genus of nocturnal lizards characterized by the following combination of characters: absence of femoral pores, infradigital lamellae not dilated, claws without sheath, inferior lamellae laterally not denticulate, and presence of a ceratobranchial groove. Currently the genus is composed of 10 species assembled in three groups: two groups with four species, and the fasciata group with only two species. Here, we analyzed genetic and morphologic data of samples of Homonota fasciata from Paraguay; according to Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian inference analyses, the Paraguay population represents an undescribed species. Additionally, morphological analysis of the holotype of H. fasciata (MNHN 6756) shows that it is morphologically different from the banded, large-scaled Homonota commonly referred to as “H. fasciata”. Given the inconsistency between morphological characters of the name-bearing type of H. fasciata and the species commonly referred to as H. fasciata, we consider them as different taxa. Thus, H. fasciata is a species inquirenda which needs further studies, and we resurrect the name H. horrida for the banded, large-scaled Homonota. The undescribed species from Paraguay is similar to H. horrida, but can be differentiated by the high position of the auditory meatus relative to the mouth commissure (vs. low position in H. horrida); and less developed tubercles on the sides of the head, including a narrow area between the orbit and the auditory meatus covered with small granular scales with or without few tubercles (vs. several big tubercles on the sides of the head even in the area between the orbit and the auditory meatus). The new species is distributed in the Dry Chaco in South America. With the formal description of this species, the actual diversity of the genus Homonota is increased to 12 species. Furthermore, we infer phylogenetic relationships for 11 of the 12 described species of the genus, based on 11 molecular markers (two mitochondrial and nine nuclear genes), with concatenated and species tree approaches. El pecarí del Chaco conocido localmente en Paraguay como tagua (Catagonus wagneri) es una especie en peligro de extinción endémica del Chaco Americano, cuya situación se mantiene en deterioro como consecuencia de la pérdida y transformación de su hábitat y de la caza excesiva en toda su área de distribución. Este trabajo presenta los resultados obtenidos y la información recopilada durante el taller “Estrategia Regional para la Conservación del Tagua” realizado en la ciudad de Asunción del Paraguay durante marzo del año 2016. En base a datos biológicos, parámetros poblacionales, puntos de presencia de la especie, datos de deforestación y cacería, describimos la situación de la especie en cada país, modelamos la distribución de la especie y aptitud del hábitat con el programa Maxent y los efectos de la cacería en la viabilidad poblacional con el programa Vortex. La ecoregión Chaqueña posee una de las mayores tasas de deforestación mundial, debido a la expansión de la ganadería y de la agricultura generando como consecuencia una pérdida de hábitat que representa la mayor amenaza para la supervivencia de la especie. En Paraguay, la deforestación en el centro del Chaco amenaza las poblaciones remanentes de tagua. En Argentina la rápida degradación de la vegetación nativa y las falencias en la implementación de normativas que manejan el bosque indican que la situación del tagua es precaria. La información disponible para la especie en Bolivia se restringe al Parque Nacional Kaa-Iya, sin embargo, la aptitud del hábitat dentro del parque y en el resto del Chaco boliviano es alta lo cual indicaría que el tagua podría estar en mejores condiciones de conservación que en los otros dos países. Los modelos de aptitud del hábitat muestran que la cobertura del suelo, la isotermalidad y la elevación son las variables mejor correlacionadas con la presencia de la especie. Aproximadamente 46% de la superficie del Gran Chaco sería apta para la especie, y únicamente el 12% del área con la mejor aptitud está incluido en un sistema oficial de protección. Según el modelo de viabilidad poblacional se requieren poblaciones mínimas de entre 1000 y 1300 individuos, en ausencia de amenazas de origen humano (ej.: caza), para que la especie sobreviva por lo menos 100 años sin perder variación genética. Con tasas anuales de cacería del 20% y del 10% la especie debería extinguirse en 20 y 100 años respectivamente. Sin embargo, una cacería que coseche el 5% de la población podría ser sustentable, si no hubiera pérdida de hábitat. La dramática conversión de superficies naturales sumada a la reducida superficie de áreas aptas protegidas y a la presión de caza determina que la conservación del tagua a largo plazo se vea amenazada. Es necesario continuar con trabajos de investigación que permitan obtener datos de calidad para posibilitar la gestión y manejo sostenible de la especie. Es indispensable que se revisen las políticas de uso del suelo y se implementen controles a la deforestación masiva que ponen en peligro el tagua y el resto de la biodiversidad del Chaco. The Chacoan peccary known locally in Paraguay as tagua (Catagonus wagneri) is an endangered species endemic to the Gran Chaco. Its situation continues to deteriorate as a consequence of habitat loss and transformation, as well as excessive hunting throughout its range. This study presents results and information obtained during the workshop “Regional strategy for the conservation of the tagua”, held in Asunción, Paraguay, in March 2016. Using population parameters as well as biological, species presence, hunting and deforestation data, we describe the conservation status in each country, model the species distribution and habitat suitability using Maxent software and the effects of hunting on population viability using Vortex software. The Chaco region has one of the highest deforestation rates in the world due to the expansion of agriculture and pastures, leading to habitat loss, which is currently the largest threat to the species survival. In Paraguay, high deforestation in the center of the Chaco threatens the remnant tagua populations. In Argentina, rapid degradation of the native vegetation and deficient implementation of land management legislation indicate a precarious situation for the species. The information about the species in Bolivia is restricted to the Kaa-Iya National Park, however, high habitat suitability in the park and outside indicate that the species may have a better conservation status than in the other countries. Habitat suitability models show that land cover, isothermality and elevation are the variables that best explain the species’ presence. Approximately 46% of the Gran Chaco is suitable for the species, but only 12% of the area with high suitability is under some type of protection. According to the population viability model done with the software Vortex, a minimum population of 1000 to 1300 individuals is required, with no human threats, to ensure that the species will survive for 100 years without losing genetic diversity. With annual hunting rates of 20% and 10% of the population, the species would go extinct in 20 and 100 years respectively, however, a harvest rate of 5% could be sustainable in the absence of habitat loss. The dramatic conversion of natural habitat, in addition to the small area that is protected and the persistence of illegal hunting threaten the future of the species. Further research is required to generate the data necessary to manage the conservation and potential use of the species. Land use policies must be revised, and the deforestation and illegal hunting that jeopardize the tagua and the entire Chaco biodiversity must be controlled. Fil: Altrichter, Mariana. The palynological characterization of 157 honey samples from three northwesternregions of Argentina (Prepuna, Yungas and Chaco) are presented todetermine their botanical origin and species associations to be able to definetheir geographic origin. Samples were harvested during 2003-2011 andprocessed by means of melissopalynological conventional techniques. Onehundred and nine pollen types were identified. Representative pollen types witha frequency of occurrence greater than 50% in descending order of importanceare: Salix humboldtiana, Allophylus edulis, Baccharis sp., Solanaceae,Eucalyptus sp., Schinus sp., Brassicaceae, Papilionoideae, Celtis sp.,Scutia/Condalia type y Parapiptadenia excelsa. The Chacoan peccary Catagonus wagneri is the rarest and most threatened of the three extant species of peccary. Its presence has been recorded in the northern Dry Chaco ecoregion, which spans northern Argentina, western Paraguay and south-eastern Bolivia. However, distribution models based on its occurrence in Argentina have predicted that suitable habitat extends southwards into central Argentina, where the species was not previously recorded. We present several records of the species outside the currently accepted distribution, including the first two records in the west of Córdoba province, > 650 km south of the southern limit of the previously known distribution. The discovery of the Chacoan peccary in central Argentina could serve as a justification for the protection of Chacoan forests in this region, where deforestation rates are among the highest worldwide. Tropical and Subtropical dry forests around the globe are experiencing rapid clearing and concomitant biodiversity loss (1). In their Research Article "Plantdiversity patterns in neotropical dry forests and their conservation implications" (23 September 2016, p. 1383), DRYFLOR et al. highlight the often underappreciated, yet exceptional floristic richness and uniqueness of these forests, and they provide compelling arguments for ramping up efforts to protect them. We applaud the DRYFLOR team for their seminal work, but we are also concerned about the exclusion of the Gran Chaco, frequently considered the world's largest continuous tropical dry forest region. Net emissions of CO2 from land-use conversion represent a significant driver of global climatic change. This is especially true for subtropical seasonally dry Chaco forests from southern South America, now experiencing one of the highest loss rates globally. However, direct quantifications of the effect of accelerated deforestation on carbon (C) pools of these systems are rare. Considering five dominant ecosystem types within the dry Chaco forest of Argentina, derived by land-use change from the same original vegetation, substrate, and climate, we quantified the magnitude and change of total C pools including trees and shrubs, non-woody plants, coarse and fine debris, and soil organic (SOC) and inorganic (SIC) pools up to 2 m depth. Soil C pools represented the largest C stocks (>74%). Shrubs also represented a large C pool (at least 28% of the aboveground standing biomass), which we quantified in detail for the first time. The conversion of forests to open shrublands and croplands was associated to large losses of organic C both in aboveground biomass and in soils down to 30 cm depth (from 43 to 64%). Although SIC is usually considered as a relatively stable compartment, the forest to crop transition presented here involved carbonate losses of c. 68% at soil depths between 1 and 2 m. Our results indicate that the landscape transformations expected in the region under business-as-usual socioeconomic scenarios will probably lead to a marked reduction of the C stored, with a consequent net C emission and a decline in other C storage-related ecosystem services provided by these ecosystems. This article summarizes the characteristics of phytoplankton of the Chaco-Pampean Plain between the Pilcomayo River (25º15’S; 57º45’W) and the Lower Salado River (31º39’S; 60º45’W) towards the Paraguay-Paraná system. This subtropical area has a climate gradient from east (wet) to west (arid). Rivers and streams have a seasonal regime, with fl oods in autumn and dry periods at the end of winter. These hydrological fl uctuations appear to be the driving forces of the phytoplankton community. During low waters (fl ow reduction and increase in salinity), diversity is reduced and density of euryhaline species is increased. The highest algal development in this area was observed during the extraordinary low water period of La Niña. In occasions of environmental stability and high temperatures, water blooms of Anabaenopsis arnoldii, A. nadsonii and Nodularia harveyana have been recorded. The lenitic environments of the western region (arid) show marked fl uctuations in extension and depth and may dry during periods of scarce precipitations. Phytoplankton density is low and represented by small Chlorococcales and Euglenophyceae. Water blooms of Dolichospermum spp. and Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii are frequent. Shallow lakes and wetlands of the eastern region (wet), which have presence of macrophytes and high organic matter, are dominated by Cryptophyceae, Chlorococcales and a wide variety of species of Euglenophyceae and diatoms. Latin American subtropical dry ecosystems have experienced significant human impact for more than a century, mainly in the form of extensive livestock grazing, forest products extraction, and agriculture expansion. We assessed the regional-scale effect of land use and land cover (LULC) on patterns of richness distribution of trees, birds, amphibians, and mammals in the Northern Argentine Dry Chaco (NADC) over c. 19 million hectares. Using species distribution models in a hierarchical framework, we modeled the distributions of 138 species. First, we trained the models for the entire Argentinean Chaco with climatic and topographic variables. Second, we modeled the same species for the NADC including the biophysical variables identified as relevant in the first step plus four LULC-related variables: woody biomass, distance to crops, density of livestock-based rural settlements (puestos), and vegetation cover. Third, we constructed species richness maps by adding the models of individual species and considering two situations, with and without LULC variables. Four, richness maps were used for assessing differences when LULC variables are added and for determining the main drivers of current patterns of species richness. We found a marked decrease in species richness of the four groups as a consequence of inclusion of LULC variables in distribution models. The main factors associated with current richness distribution patterns (both negatively) were woody biomass and density of livestock puestos. Species richness in present-day Semiarid Chaco landscapes is strongly affected by LULC patterns, even in areas not transformed to agriculture. Most subtropical forests in South America are located in regions with a marked seasonality in precipitation, which may induce the formation of annual bands in woody species. Due to the lack of precise information on tree-ring visibility, we evaluated the wood characteristics of 37 tree species in the subtropicalYungas and Chaco forests from northwestern (NW) Argentina. Anatomical features associated with the delimitation of growth bands were examined to establish the presence of tree rings. Different forest types reflect the precipitation gradients and wood anatomical features vary accordingly. Characteristics of wood structure are closely related to the dominant climatic patterns of each forest, revealing a common pattern of anatomical arrangements in terms of water transport and safety. In the Chaco and transitional forests, ring boundaries are related to marginal parenchyma whereas in montane forests growth ring boundary is mostly associated with the presence of thicker fibers at the end of the ring. The largest proportion of species with clearly marked growth rings occurs in the montane forest type of NW Argentina. Clear growth rings is a requisite for dendrochronological applications, hence the present work represents the first regional attempt to address the potential of subtropical species in South America to be used in dendrochronological studies. Soybean expansion, driven by growing global meat demand, has accompanied neotropical deforestation in past decades. A recent decoupling between soybean production and deforestation in Brazil is taken as evidence of efficient deforestation regulation. Here, we assessed the relationships between soybean economy, livestock production and deforestation from 1972 to 2011 in Northern Argentina Dry Chaco. We used Panel Analysis to evaluate the relationship between soybean cultivated and deforested area in different periods and we used high resolution time series analysis of a deforestation hotspot, to explore links between soybean economy, cattle ranching and deforestation. In northern Argentina, 2.7 millions ha were deforested from 1972 to 2011, 56% of which occurred after 2002. The results of the Panel analysis indicate a strong link between soybean expansion and deforestation but with variation among periods mediated by the links between soybean and livestock productions. Deforestation was strongly coupled with soybean expansion during the 1972?1997 and 2002?2011 periods; but was largely decoupled between 1997 and 2002, when strong increments in production were accompanied by low deforestation. The high resolution analysis also indicated contrasting levels of association after and before 1997. The soybean deforestation decoupled periods in Brazil and Argentina shared similarly weak economic incentives for soybean production, rapid technological innovation and preceding high deforestation periods. In the Argentine case, when economic incentives turned positive after a 5-years decoupled period, new government measures were unable to regulate deforestation. Our study suggests that macroeconomic factors can be a much stronger deforestation force compared with domestic legal frameworks. Effectiveness of neotropical deforestation regulation should be carefully monitored and interpreted with caution paying special attention to global economic context for soybean expansion. Studies were conducted to determine the selection of humans, chickens and rabbits by Culicidae in three different environments in the province of Chaco, Argentina. Mosquitoes were collected fortnightly using cylindrical metal traps containing animal bait (chickens and rabbits). The mosquitoes were collected between June 2001-May 2002. During the same period and with the same frequency, mosquitoes biting the human operators of the traps were collected during the first 15 min of exposure within different time intervals: from 09:00 am-11:00 am, 01:00 pm-03:00 pm, 05:00 pm-07:00 pm and 09:00 pm-10:00 pm. A total of 19,430 mosquitoes of 49 species belonging to 10 genera were collected. Culex species mainly selected chicken bait and Wyeomyia species selected rabbit bait. Ochlerotatus and Psorophora species were more abundant in rabbit-baited traps. Anopheles triannulatus, Coquillettidia nigricans, Ochlerotatus scapularis, Mansonia titillans and Psorophora albigenu showed a strong attraction for human bait. The Anopheles, Coquillettidia, Culex and Mansonia species were more active between 05:00 pm-09:00 pm, while Ochlerotatus, Psorophora, Haemagogus and Wyeomyia were most active from 09:00 am-07:00 pm. Las hormigas (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) presentan una amplia distribución, encontrándose desde los Polos hasta el Ecuador, ocupando distintos tipos de ambientes, desde áridos desiertos hasta selvas ribereñas sometidas a largos periodos de inundación. En estos ambientes ocupan distintos nichos, aprovechando diferentes tipos de recursos, influyendo en la dinámica del suelo, exhibiendo una gran variedad de comportamientos, y un gran número de interacciones con especies animales y vegetales. Estas particularidades ecológicas sumadas a su gran diversidad taxonómica y morfológica convierten a las hormigas en importantes bioindicadores y potenciales herramientas para el monitoreo ambiental. El objetivo del trabajo es conocer la influencia de la antropización sobre la diversidad, morfología y estructura funcional de hormigas en selvas en galería del Chaco Húmedo. Different cultures have different relationships with nature, and these relationships have many dimensions which shape people’s perceptions towards nature. Therefore, perceptions may vary between different cultures within the same territories. Understanding each culture´s relationship with the surrounding environment is of extreme importance for the correct allocation of conservation resources, and for the development of efficient conservation actions. In this study, we discuss the perceptions of two different cultures regarding large and mediumsized mammal conservation in an endangered region of Argentina, called the Dry Chaco. These two cultures are peasants, or Criollos, and the indigenous Wichís; we assessed and compared their perceptions on local extinctions, conservation problems, conflicts with wildlife and possible solutions for these issues. We found that although both cultures inhabit the same territory and report local extinctions, their perceptions on which species were locally extinct differed. Another difference was the perceived time-period in which disappearances occurred. We also found that most respondents recognize conservation problems and possible solutions, although these differ between both cultures. Management for conservation of these species should be specific to each culture, and understanding local perspectives allows the inclusion of a broader view of human needs, perceptions and knowledge in conservation programs. In central-western Argentina, there is a pronounced water deficit gradient, from semiarid climate conditions with 500-mm rainfall/year to arid climate conditions with 80-mm rainfall/year. This climatic transition, governed by the rainfall gradient, occurs between the Arid Chaco and Monte phytogeographic regions and is evidenced by differences in vegetation type, structure, dynamics and tree growth. In turn, the availability of soil moisture, particularly access to the water table, modifies water use strategies by trees along this gradient. We analyzed how water availability, expressed as differences in accessibility to the water table, influences Prosopis flexuosa tree rings along a precipitation gradient. In this manner, we try to interpret the growth of species according to the use of differential water sources. P. flexuosa showed highly varying growth reactions (tree-ring width and hydraulic anatomic parameters) with climate, depending on the ecology of the site. Along the Arid Chaco- Monte gradient, the growth of P. flexuosa is more dependent on variations in rainfall in those areas where water depth is greater than root spread. The sustained increase in the global food demand has favoured the recent expansion of industrial agriculture into neotropical dry forest ecosystems, with resulting changes in their extent and spatial configuration. Based on Landsat satellite images, we analyzed changes in forest cover and landscape configuration over an area of 600 by 100 km located in NW Argentina (Tucuma´n and Salta provinces) in four periods between 1972 and 2007. The study area, one of the most active deforestation frontiers of South American dry forest, was divided into six relatively homogeneous sectors in terms of land property structure and biophysical characteristics. During the study period 1.4 millions hectares of dry forest were cleared. Deforestation started in the 1970s as a result of technological changes and increasing rainfall; continued (with spatial and temporal fluctuations) during the 1980s and 1990s in association to the sustained global demand of soybean, and was accelerated (to ca. 100,000 ha year_1) between 2001 and 2007 following the global increase in commodity prices, and the national peso devaluation. We described the landscape structure using eight landscape indices, summarized as one synthesis value: the Euclidian distance across the seven dimensions from a theoretical non-fragmented situation. In areas with soil limitations deforestation resulted in relatively stable, highly fragmented landscapes. In contrast, the sites with regional coarser-scale limitations (rainfall), deforestation produced a less fragmented landscape where agriculture concentrates in sites with high rainfall. Sites with no limitations for agriculture tend to a largely deforested landscape with few small and poorly connected forest patches. The land properties size seems to influence some indices of fragmentation, but the synthetic index of fragmentation suggests an overall convergence of fragmentation patterns towards a similar configuration across different biophysical and land tenure conditions Fil: Gasparri, Nestor Ignacio. Una nueva especie (holotipo P en MLP: Argentina, Formosa province, Parque Nacional Pilcomayo, Laguna Blanca, esteros junto a la laguna, 25°10’29”S, 58°07’44”O, 74 m a.s.l., 16/17 ii 2008, col. NvE, RWG) es descripta, diagnosticada e ilustrada, y se proveen una clave, ilustraciones diagnósticas y mapas de distribución para las tres especies del género que ocurren en Argentina. La combinación de manchas dorsales rojo–anaranjadas en S2-3 en ejemplares maduros, diente suplementario de uñas pretarsales bien desarrollado, forma del triángulo occipital de hembra y de vesica spermalis, lóbulo genital, hámulo posterior y cerco del macho permite diagnosticar a la nueva especie. A new species (holotype ♂ in MLP: Argentina, Formosa province, Parque Nacional Río Pilcomayo, Laguna Blanca, marshes next to pond, 25°10′29″S, 58°07′44″W, 74 m a.s.l., 16/17 ii 2008, leg. NvE, RWG) is described, diagnosed and illustrated, and a key, diagnostic illustrations, and distribution maps are provided for the three species of the genus occurring in Argentina. The combination of well defined orange-red dorsal spots on S2-3 in mature specimens, well developed supplementary tooth in pretarsal claws, shape of occipital triangle of female, and of vesica spermalis, genital lobe, posterior hamule, and cercus of male diagnose the new species. We estimated carbon pools and emissions from deforestation in northern Argentine forests between 1900 and 2005, based on forest inventories, deforestation estimates from satellite images and historical data on forests and agriculture. Carbon fluxes were calculated using a book-keeping model. We ran 1000 simulations for a 105-year period with different combinations of values of carbon stocks (Mg C ha−1), soil carbon in the top 0.2 m, and annual deforestation series. The 1000 combinations of parameters were performed as a sensitivity analysis that for each run, randomly selected the values of each variable within a predefined range of values and probability distributions. Using the simulation outputs, we calculated the accumulated C emissions due to deforestation from 1900 to 2005 and the annual emission as the average of the 1000 simulations, and uncertainties of our estimates as the standard deviation. We found that northern Argentine forests contain an estimated 4.54 Pg C (2.312 Pg C in biomass and 2.233 Pg C in soil). Between 1900 and 2005 approximately 30% of the forests were deforested, yielding carbon emissions of 0.945 (SD = 0.270) Pg C. Estimated average annual carbon emissions between 1996 and 2005, mostly from deforestation of the Chaco dry forests, were 20,875 (SD = 6,156) Gg C y−1 (1 Gg = 10−6 Pg). These values represent the largest source of carbon from land-cover change in the extra-tropical southern hemisphere, between 0.9 and 2.7% of the global carbon emissions from deforestation, and approximately 10% of carbon emissions from the Brazilian Amazon. Deforestation, which has accelerated during the last decades as a result of modern agriculture expansion, represents a major national source of greenhouse gases and the second emission source, after fossil fuel consumption by fixed sources. We conclude that Argentine forests are an important carbon pool and emission source that need more attention for accurate global estimates, and seasonally dry forest deforestation is a key component of the Argentine carbon cycle. En este trabajo describimos la situación poblacional de los jaguares en Argentina. Analizamos y discutimos cuales son las principales amenazas que afectan a los jaguares y a sus presas y describimos las principales áreas protegidas que conservan a esta especie y su hábitat. Para estimar y trazar el área de distribución actual del jaguar en Argentina, utilizamos como insumo los datos de presencia propios y obtenidos de distintas fuentes entre 1998 y 2009. Para ello usamos el estimador de densidad Kernel con un volumen de contorno del 99 % de la densidad de datos de presencia, con un factor de suavizado de 25 km, otorgándole mayor peso a los registros más recientes. Revisamos el estado de conocimiento y de conservación de las diferentes poblaciones de jaguar remanentes en Argentina a partir de una revisión bibliográfica de los trabajos desarrollados en las distintas regiones del país. Estimamos que existen menos de 300 jaguares adultos en todo el país, en tres poblaciones aisladas a lo largo de seis provincias: menos de 55 en el Bosque Atlántico de Misiones, entre 100 y 200 en la eco-región de las Yungas y probablemente no más de 25 en la eco-región del Chaco. Estos números representarían menos del 1 % de la población media histórica de 35.000 individuos que estimamos podría haber existido hace unos pocos cientos de años en el país. Un análisis de viabilidad de la población del Bosque Atlántico sugiere que, si no se reduce la caza ilegal de jaguares y sus presas, existe una alta probabilidad (>90%) de que la especie desaparezca en los próximos 50 años. El conocimiento actual sugiere que el jaguar podría desaparecer de Argentina en las próximas décadas si no se implementan con urgencia medidas de conservación. Entre estas es fundamental contar con un mejor control de la caza furtiva, fortalecer y mejorar el manejo de las áreas protegidas,monitorear las tendencias poblacionales en las tres regiones, y promover estrategias productivas que favorezcan la coexistencia del jaguar y el hombre. We documented the first record of Andalgalomys pearsoni (Myers 1978) in Argentina, based on one individual caught at Cerro Colorado (Metán department, Saltaprovince, Argentina). This new record enlarges the distribution of this species, to date only known from Bolivia and Paraguay, ca. 530 km SW and fills a gap without records for Andalgalomys of approximately 850 km between Paraguay and NW Argentina. The finding of this mouse, caught more than 50 years ago, highlights the importance that biological collections have in our understanding ofbiological diversity. Fil: Teta, Pablo Vicente. According to van Grouw (2013), leucism and progressive graying are types of plumage aberrations defined as the partial or total lack of melanin in feathers and skin, which may result in an all-white plumage or all-white feathers mixed with normally colored ones. The distribution of white feathers varies from only few feathers to a full-white plumage. In birds with completely leucistic plumage, the skin is colorless, in partially leucistic plumages as well as in birds with progressive graying the skin and bill usually is of normal color. Background.Just as for most other tortoise species, the once common Chaco tortoise,Chelonoidis chilensis(Testudinidae), is under constant threat across it distribution in Argentina, Bolivia and Paraguay. Despite initial qualitative description of the species distribution and further individual reports of new locations for the species, there is no description of the species distribution in probabilistic terms. With this work we aim to produce an updated predictive distribution map forC. chilensisto serve as a baseline management tool for directed strategic conservation planning.Methods.We fitted a spatially expanded logistic regression model within the Bayesian framework that accounts for uncertainty on presence-only and generated pseudo-absence data into the parameter estimates. We contrast the results with reported data for the national networks of protected areas to assess the inclusion of the species in area-based conservation strategies.Results.We obtained maps with predictions of the occurrence of the species and reported the model’s uncertainty spatially. The model suggests that potential suitable habitats for the species are continuous across Argentina, West Paraguay and South Bolivia, considering the variables, the scale and the resolution used. The main limiting variables were temperature-related variables, and precipitation in the reproductive period.Discussion.Given the alarming low density and coverage of protected areas over the distribution area ofC. chilensis, the map produced provides a baseline to identify areas where directed strategic conservation management actions would be more efficient for this and other associated species.

Although no data are available on the paleoflora of the Chaco plain, plant fossil impressions are found in the banks of the low Bermejo River, which flows along the Eastern Chaco phytogeographic region. Here, we analyze paleoagrostological impressions recovered from two fossiliferous localities in order to provide insights into the environmental history of the Chaco region. Sixty complete Poaceae spikelet impressions were studied morphologically and compared with extant Chaco grass species. For each fossil spikelet, 11 morphological characters were described and statistically analyzed. All spikelets were found to belong to the Panicoideae subfamily, and some have consistent morphological features with this subfamily; hence, we assign them to the extant genera Cenchrus, Echinochloa, Hymenachne, and Paspalum. These impressions are the first floral remains found in the Eastern Chaco and collectively suggest that environmental and climatic conditions from these sediments corresponded to a subtropical humid climate and that vegetation was similar to the extant Eastern Chaco flora. Se realizan algunas consideraciones morfológicas, taxonómicas y nomenclaturales sobre Monvillea phatnosperma (K. Schum.) Britton & Rose (Cactaceae), una especie nativa del norte del Gran Chaco' y áreas adyacentes. Se describe e ilustra M. phatnosperma var. arenasii var. nov., en reemplazo de Monvillea kroenleinii R. Kiesling - nom. inval. Some aspects of morphology, taxonomy and nomenclature about Monvillea phatnosperma (K. Schum.) Britton & Rose (Cactaceae), a species native from the north of the Great Chaco' and adjacent areas, are considered.
