Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico One of the traditional forms of agricultural expansion is the conversion of natural ecosystems into cultivated areas, usually through deforestation. The Upper Xingu, located in the state of Mato Grosso Brazil, has been referred to as one of the regions of most intense conversion of natural ecosystems to pasture or cropland (specially soybean) in the country, and there is a concern with respect to how and how much these changes in vegetation modify the hydroclimatology of the region. Thus, this study aims to assess the influence of land cover changes on evapotranspiration and streamflow in small catchments of the Upper Xingu, in the southeastern Amazon basin. Streamflow was measured in small catchments with uniform land use in the region of study, and single point simulations were performed considering Tropical Rainforest, Cerrado and Pasture as land use in the InLand model and Soybean cropland as land use in the AgroIBIS model. Meteorological data and model input parameters such as the soil saturated hydraulic conductivity were measured at the Tanguro Ranch - MT. The simulation results provided by the InLand and AgroIBIS for the mean stream discharge were similar to the values observed between September 2008 and August 2010. Comparing the simulated streamflows for the four land uses in the Upper Xingu, it is possible to observe that the water yield in natural ecosystems (tropical rainforest and cerrado) was 53,5% lower than in agricultural ecosystems (pasture and soybean cropland). During the period of study, evapotranspiration was 38,3% lower in agricultural ecosystems compared with natural ecosystems. We also assessed the influence of 11 different soil textures on the partitioning of precipitation into evapotranspiration and mean annual streamflow for the four vegetation cover types studied. Regardless of soil texture, the simulated runoff in areas covered with tropical rainforest was always lower than that simulated for the other vegetation covers, and the difference between the simulated runoff for tropical rainforest and cerrado was greater for lower hydraulic conductivity saturated values. Uma das formas tradicionais de expansão da fronteira agrícola é por meio da conversão de ecossistemas naturais em áreas de cultivo, geralmente por meio de desmatamento. A região do Alto Xingu, no Estado do Mato Grosso - Brasil, tem sido indicada como uma das regiões de mais intensa conversão de ecossistemas naturais em pastagens ou culturas agrícolas (principalmente a soja) no país e há preocupação em se compreender como e quanto essa alteração da cobertura vegetal modifica a hidroclimatologia da região. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho é examinar o quanto a mudança na cobertura vegetal influencia a evapotranspiração e a vazão de microbacias do Alto Xingu, na região sudeste da bacia Amazônica. Foram feitas medições de vazão em microbacias com uso uniforme do solo na região de estudo e foram conduzidas simulações pontuais com as coberturas de floresta, cerrado e pastagem no modelo InLand e com cobertura de soja, no AgroIBIS. Os dados meteorológicos e parâmetros como a condutividade hidráulica saturada do solo utilizados nos modelos foram medidos na Fazenda Tanguro MT. As vazões médias simuladas nos modelos InLand e AgroIBIS foram semelhantes aos valores observados em campo no período de setembro de 2008 a agosto de 2010. Comparando-se as vazões simuladas para as quatro coberturas no Alto Xingu, estima-se que a conversão da precipitação em vazão nos ecossistemas naturais (floresta e cerrado) foi 53,5% menor que nos ecossistemas agrícolas (pastagem e soja). Quando comparado aos ecossistemas naturais, a evapotranspiração dos ecossistemas agrícolas foi 38,3% menor durante o período de estudo. Também se buscou avaliar a influência de 11 diferentes classes texturais no particionamento da precipitação em escoamento total e evapotranspiração nas coberturas estudadas. Independente da textura do solo considerada, o escoamento total com cobertura de floresta tropical foi sempre inferior à simulada para as demais coberturas e a diferença entre o escoamento total simulado para as coberturas de floresta e cerrado é maior quanto menores são os valores de condutividade hidráulica saturada.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior Sea Surface Temperature (SST) is able to influence the atmospheric circulation and consequently changes weather patterns in both local and global scale. This study aimed to understand how temperature and precipitation in South America respond to modes of climate variability such as the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Atlantic Dipole (AD), for current and future conditions, considering an extreme emission scenario of GreenHouse effect (GHG). We used four models as part of coupled model of Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change/Fifth Assessment Report (IPCC/AR5), intercomparison project, Phase 5 (CMIP5): MRI (Meteorology Research Institute, Japan), INM (Institute for Numerical Mathematics, Russia), NCC (Norwegian Climate Center, Norway) and ECHAM / MPI (Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, Germany). The results have shown that the dominant patterns in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, are respectively the ENSO and Dipole Atlantic which were better simulated by the models MPI and NCC (INM and MRI) and proved satisfactory (unsatisfactory) and able (unable) to reproduce the response of precipitation and temperature in relation to observed climate over the South America. For future conditions it has been found more intense episodes of ENSO, while for AD the inter-hemispheric gradients is more intense. Furthermore, it is projected that this pattern, known as the negative phase of AD, may significantly influence the atmospheric circulation and alter the patterns of temperature and precipitation in South America. A Temperatura da Superfície do Mar (TSM) é capaz de influenciar na circulação atmosférica e consequentemente alterar os padrões climáticos tanto em escala local quanto global. Este trabalho buscou entender como a temperatura e precipitação na América do Sul respondem em função dos modos de variabilidade climática El Niño Oscilação-Sul (ENSO) e Dipolo do Atlântico (DA), para as condições atuais e futuras, considerando um cenário extremo de emissão de Gases de Efeito Estuda (GEE). Foram utilizados quatro modelos climáticos acoplados do Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change/Fifth Assessment Report (IPCC/AR5), pertencentes ao Projeto de Intercomparação de Modelos Acoplados, Fase 5 (CMIP5): MRI (Meteorology Research Institute, Japão), INM (Institute for Numerical Mathematics, Rússia), NCC (Norwegian Climate Center, Noruega) e ECHAM/MPI (Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, Alemanha). Os resultados mostraram que os padrões dominantes nos Oceanos Pacífico e Atlântico, são respectivamente o ENSO e Dipolo do Atlântico e foram melhor reproduzidos pelos modelos MPI e NCC (INM e MRI) e se mostraram satisfatórios (insatisfatórios) e capazes (incapazes) de reproduzir a resposta da precipitação e temperatura, em relação ao clima observado sobre a AS. Para condições futuras têm-se episódios de ENSO mais intensos, enquanto que para configurações do tipo DA notam-se gradientes inter-hemisféricos mais intensos, onde se observou TSM's mais baixas no Atlântico Norte. Além disso, projeta-se que este padrão, conhecido como fase negativa do DA, poderá influenciar significativamente na circulação atmosférica e alterar os padrões de temperatura e precipitação na AS.

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico The performance of LSEMs (Land surface and ecosystem models) depends on the parameters of the equations representing the simulated process. However, the measurement of some parameters can be impractical or even impossible; therefore, they need to be estimated, or preferably optimized specifically for each ecosystem. When the parameters are calibrated to a single variable (mono-objective problem) they may not represent the reality, because the complexity of the model and its dependence on several variables (multi-objective problem). Thus, simultaneous multi-objective optimizations are indispensable. However, the optimization performance decreases as the number of variables to be optimized simultaneously increases. Furthermore, the study of simultaneous optimization using more than three objectives is a new area and not yet sufficiently studied. For simultaneous optimization of a large number of variables, there is a method that uses concepts of hierarchical systems theory in which the optimization occurs from the fastest (radiative fluxes) to the slowest process (carbon allocation). This study evaluates the performance of the hierarchical optimization using the index D (the average of the ratios between the individual outputs of multi-objective optimization and monoobjective). Understanding how the performance index D varies with respect to the number of objective functions optimized and to the number of hierarchical levels is important for the development of this research area. Two steps are necessary to achieve the study goals. First, a sensitivity analysis was performed to determine the output variables sensitivity to the model parameters. After, simulations were made using all possible combinations among the seven micrometeorological variables available (PARo, fAPAR, Rn, u *, H, LE, NEE) taking into account the hierarchy of processes. The results indicate that for up to three objective functions, hierarchical multi-objective optimization generates better results than the simultaneous multiobjective optimization (one hierarchical level), provided that the parameters distribution among hierarchical levels is consistent with the sensitivity analysis. Another important result shows that for the same number of outputs optimized, the greater the number of hierarchical levels the better the performance of the optimized model. However, the model performance falls quickly as the number of objective functions increases, evidencing that the power of hierarchy calibration that use a high number of objective functions is highly dependent on the removal of some constraints for model s performance. O desempenho de um LSEM (Modelo de superfície terrestre e ecossistema) depende dos parâmetros das equações que representam os processos simulados. Contudo, a mensuração de alguns destes parâmetros pode ser impraticável ou até mesmo impossível; por isso, necessitam ser estimados ou, preferencialmente, otimizados para cada ecossistema. Quando os parâmetros são calibrados para uma única variável (problema mono-objetivo) eles podem não representar bem a realidade, dado a complexidade do modelo e sua dependência de diversas variáveis (problema multiobjetivo). Por isso, há a necessidade de uma otimização simultânea multiobjetiva. Porém, o desempenho da otimização diminui com o aumento do número de variáveis otimizadas simultaneamente e, além disso, o estudo da otimização simultânea de mais de três objetivos é uma área relativamente nova e não suficientemente estudada. Para a otimização simultânea de um grande número de variáveis, existe uma metodologia na qual se utiliza conceitos de teoria hierárquica de sistemas em que a otimização ocorre dos processos mais rápidos (fluxos radiativos) para os mais lentos (alocação de carbono). Este trabalho avalia o desempenho da otimização hierárquica do modelo, utilizando o índice D (a média das razões individuais entre as saídas das otimizações multiobjetiva e monoobjetiva). Entender como o índice de desempenho D do algoritmo de otimização hierárquico varia em relação ao número de funções objetivo otimizadas é de extrema importância para o desenvolvimento desta área de pesquisa. Para fazer atingir os objetivos, foram necessárias duas etapas. Primeiramente, foi feita uma análise de sensibilidade, a fim de conhecer a sensibilidade das variáveis de saída aos parâmetros do modelo. Depois, foram feitas simulações com todas as combinações possíveis entre as sete variáveis micrometeorológicas disponíveis (PARo, fAPAR, Rn, u*, H, LE, NEE) levando em consideração a hierarquia dos processos. Os resultados encontrados indicam que, para até três funções objetivo, a otimização multiobjetiva hierárquica pode gerar resultados melhores do que a otimização multiobjetiva tradicional (um único nível hierárquico), desde que a distribuição dos parâmetros entre as variáveis seja feita de forma coerente com a análise de sensibilidade. Outro resultado importante revela que para um mesmo número de saídas otimizadas, quanto maior o número de níveis hierárquicos melhor o desempenho do modelo otimizado. Porém, o desempenho do modelo diminui rapidamente quando o número de funções objetivo aumenta, evidenciando que o poder da calibração hierárquica para o uso de um grande número de funções objetivo é altamente dependente de algumas restrições que o modelo possui e um alto desempenho do modelo para muitas funções objetivo será possível somente após a remoção delas.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior The Amazon rainforest is one of the most important ecosystems in the world with the highest biodiversity on the planet. In spite of this reputation however, it has been subjected to anthropogenic pressures in recent decades. The expansion of agriculture and livestock has been considered the main cause of deforestation in the region. Because it is important to understand the biosphere-atmosphere feedbacks processes in the Amazon, this work was done to evaluate the resilience of the natural ecosystem and the productivity of soybean and pasture at different levels of deforestation and increased [CO2]. A simplified model that represents the interactions between climate, forest and land use in Amazonia was used. We implemented five sets of simulations as follows: (1) control, (2) radiative effect (global warming) of CO2, (3) radiative and physiological effects of CO2, (4) effect of changes in land use and (5) radiative and physiological effects of CO2 plus changes in land use. The productivity simulated which considereding all the effects of future scenarios for the years 2020 and 2050 were compared to the control simulation. For the control simulation, we aboveground live biomass (AGB) modeled, including live leaf and wood pools, in Amazonia ranged from 5.1 to 20.7 kgC.m-2, with a mean value of 17.9 kgC.m-2, generally decreasing from north to south. Net primary productivity (NPP) showed the same geographic pattern, with values ranging from 1.04 to 1.29 kgC.m-2.yr-1, with a mean value of 1.21 kgC.m-2.yr-1. While the soybean yield ranged from 1610 to 3665 kg.ha-1, with a mean value of 2704.7 kg ha-1 the dry matter pasture yield ranged from 6,852 to 23,766 kgDM.ha-1.yr-1 with a mean value of 16,245.5 kgDM.ha-1.yr-1. In response to climate change for the year 2020, we found changes in AGB of -16%, in soybean yield of -10% and in pasture yield of -2%. With the introduction of physiological effects in simulations the changes were -7% for AGB, -4% for soybean and +1% for the pasture. In response to the change in land use, AGB declined in relation to control simulation to 37% when the deforested area was replaced by soybeans, and it decreased to 34% when the deforested area was replaced by pasture. The soybean yield and pasture productivity decreased to 18% and 29%, respectively. When all the effects were analyzed jointly, AGB declined to 37%, soybean yield to 21% and pasture productivity to 29%. For the year 2050 changes in AGB, in soybean yield and in pasture productivity were also higher in the simulations in which all effects were considered, with a 63% reduction in the AGB, 31% for soybean yield and 33% for pasture productivity in a pessimistic scenario. The combined effects of climate change (due to changes in atmospheric composition) and change in land use caused a significant reduction in the productivity of the natural ecosystem and in the two crops analyzed. In general, the effect of deforestation was the most important factor for this reduction. The identification of strategic areas for the preservation of natural ecosystems associated with the development of new cultivars adapted to future climatic conditions would strengthen agriculture in the Amazon. This identification would make better use of areas already deforested without the need to move so rapidly in the remaining forests. A Floresta Amazônica é um dos mais importantes ecossistemas do mundo, possuindo a maior biodiversidade do planeta. Apesar de toda sua relevância, ela vem sendo submetida a pressões antrópicas nas últimas décadas. A expansão da agricultura e da pecuária tem sido considerada a principal causa do desmatamento na região. Considerando-se a importância do entendimento dos processos de retroalimentação clima-biosfera na Amazônia, este trabalho foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de avaliar a resiliência do ecossistema natural e da produtividade da soja e da pastagem em diferentes níveis de desmatamento e elevação de CO2, por meio de um modelo simplificado que represente as interações entre o clima e o uso do solo na Amazônia. Foram realizadas cinco conjuntos de simulações: (1) controle, (2) efeito radiativo (aquecimento global) do CO2, (3) efeito radiativo e fisiológico do CO2, (4) efeito climático da mudança no uso do solo e (5) efeitos radiativo e fisiológico do CO2 + mudanças no uso do solo. Em seguida, as produtividades simuladas, considerando todos os efeitos dos cenários futuros para os anos de 2020 e 2050, foram comparadas à simulação controle. Para a simulação controle, a biomassa viva acima do solo (AGB) modelada para o ecossistema natural, incluindo folhas e tronco, na Amazônia, variou de 5,1 a 20,7 kgC.m-2, com valor médio 17,9 kgC.m-2, geralmente decrescendo de norte para o sul. A produtividade primária líquida (NPP) mostrou o mesmo padrão geográfico, com valores variando de 1,04 a 1,29 kgC.m-2.a-1 e valor médio de 1,21 kgC.m-2.a-1. Enquanto a produtividade de grãos da soja variou de 1.610 a 3.665 kg.ha-1, com valor médio 2.704,7 kg.ha-1. Já a produtividade de matéria seca da pastagem variou de 6.852 a 23.766 kgMS.ha-1.a-1, com valor médio de 16.245,5 kgMS.ha-1.a-1. Como resposta às mudanças climáticas para o ano de 2020, foram encontradas alterações médias na AGB de -16%, na produtividade da soja de -10% e na produtividade da pastagem de -2%. Com a introdução do efeito fisiológico nas simulações, as alterações foram de -7% para a AGB, de -4% para a soja e de +1% para a pastagem. Como resposta à mudança no uso do solo, a AGB decresceu em relação à simulação controle até 37% quando a área desmatada foi substituída por soja, enquanto decresceu até 34% quando a área desmatada foi substituída por pastagem. Já a produtividade da soja e da pastagem decresceram até 18% e 29%, respectivamente. Quando foram analisados todos os efeitos conjuntamente, a AGB decaiu até 37%, a produtividade da soja -21% e da pastagem -29%. Para o ano de 2050, as alterações na AGB, na produtividade da soja e da pastagem também foram maiores nas simulações em que todos os efeitos foram considerados, com redução de até 63% na AGB, de até 31% para a produtividade da soja e de até 33% para a produtividade da pastagem no cenário mais pessimista. Os efeitos combinados das mudanças climáticas causadas pela mudança na composição atmosférica e pela mudança no uso do solo provocaram uma redução significativa na produtividade do ecossistema natural e das duas culturas agrícolas analisadas. De maneira geral, o efeito do desmatamento foi o mais importante para essa redução, portanto, a identificação de áreas estratégicas para a preservação do ecossistema natural associada ao desenvolvimento de novos cultivares adaptados às condicões climáticas futuras poderiam fortalecer a agropecuária na Amazônia, propiciando um melhor proveito das áreas já desmatadas, sem a necessidade de avançar-se de modo tão acelerado sobre as florestas.

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico Nitrogen availability in terrestrial ecosystem has an important effect on the global carbon cycle and may influence the accumulation of carbon in ecosystems, since these depend on the availability of nutrients such as nitrogen to support the growth of vegetation. A variety of dynamic ecosystem models have been used to gain a better understanding of the relationship between nutrient availability, the C cycle and possible climate change. These models differ significantly in their conceptualization, formulation, parameterization and input data. In this work we used the ecosystem dynamics model IBIS to investigate the influence of nitrogen stress on photosynthesis. The model simulates the cycling of N in soil and plants, allowing the estimation of the values of stocks of this nutrient in each of the compartments of the plant and the assessment of the influence of N deficiency in growth. A comparison of simulated and observed data confirms that IBIS robustly simulates the behavior of net primary production (NPP), biomass, foliar N and soil N. When the vegetation is exposed to nitrogen stress by a reduction of N-leaf fraction, NPP decreases. When atmospheric carbon dioxide was increased, N stress limited the plant s capacity to respond by stimulating photosynthesis in response to the increased concentration of atmospheric CO2. This indicates that inclusion of the relationship between C and N in surface models produces a better simulation of ecosystem behavior. We also observed that there is an increase in N leaf concentration with the age of the forest, which serves as an indicator of increased availability of N for the growth of secondary forest. A disponibilidade de nitrogênio (N) nos ecossistemas terrestres tem importante efeito sobre o ciclo de carbono. Variações na disponibilidade desse nutriente, no espaço e no tempo, podem afetar o crescimento e a produção das plantas, alterando a dinâmica dos ecossistemas e, consequentemente, as formas que a vegetação troca massa e energia com a atmosfera, causando uma retroalimentação no clima em nível regional ou global. Uma variedade de modelos de dinâmica de ecossistemas tem sido utilizada a fim de se obter um melhor entendimento da relação entre a disponibilidade de nutrientes, o ciclo do C e as possíveis mudanças climáticas, diferindo significativamente nas conceitualizações, formulações, parametrizações e dados de entrada. Neste trabalho foi implementada ao modelo de dinâmica de ecossistema IBIS, a influência do estresse de N na fotossíntese, permitindo estabelecer a ciclagem de N no solo e na planta, possibilitando inferir os valores dos estoques deste nutriente em cada um dos compartimentos da planta e assim avaliar a influência da deficiência de N no crescimento da mesma. Através da comparação entre os dados simulados pelo modelo e os observados em campo, verificou-se que o modelo apresentou bom desempenho ao simular o comportamento da produção primária líquida (NPP), biomassa, N foliar e no solo. Quando a vegetação foi submetida a uma condição de estresse por deficiência de N, pela redução da fração de N foliar, o modelo respondeu com diminuição na NPP, indicando a relação entre a deficiência deste nutriente e a capacidade da planta em sequestrar C da atmosfera. Isso indica que ao se incluir a relação entre C e N nos modelos de superfície, é possível obter-se melhores respostas do comportamento do ecossistema frente a variações ambientais, o que auxilia na melhor compreensão das retroalimentações entre biosfera e atmosfera que são desencadeadas por variações na disponibilidade de nutrientes.

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico There is a clear shift happening in the physical environment of the Amazon forest, where human intervention has intensified dramatically during the last half of the twentieth century. Recent studies suggest that changes in regional climate caused by local deforestation have the potential to cause parts of the Amazon to cross an ecological tipping point : a critical threshold at which a relatively small perturbation can qualitatively alter the state or development of a system, in this case shifting the Amazon system into a new and drier equilibrium. In addition to the deforestation of the Amazon, continuing deforestation of the Cerrado (which has already been deforested by more than 55%) could combine with the climate impacts of Amazonian deforestation to produce a significant increase of the duration of the dry season in the transition zone between forest and savanna ( arc-of-deforestation‟) in south east Amazonia. However, the limits and patterns of deforestation in the Amazon and Cerrado that would affect forest‟s climate remain unknown. The aim of this study is to investigate the response of the climate of different regions of the Amazon rainforest to progressive deforestation of the Amazon and the Cerrado, and assess the possibility of the emergence of an alternative bioclimatic equilibrium. To achieve this goal, we generated 10 Amazon deforestation scenarios and 10 mixed deforestation scenarios, combining forest and savanna removal, and all scenarios were implemented in the coupled atmosphere-biosphere model CCM3-IBIS. We run 5 ensembles for each scenario, for 50 years each, with CO2 fixed at 380 ppm. The results show that when we consider the climate for the total forest area, there is no transposition of the tipping point. However, considering the arc-of-deforestation climate, we observed the emergence of a bioclimatic equilibrium typical of seasonal forest, and in regions in the south, southwest and east of the forest a bioclimatic equilibrium typical of savanna. In all of these cases, the combined effect of forest and Cerrado deforestation was significant. These results show the resilience of some regions of the forest and the vulnerability of others, which can help decision makers and conservationists in the development and implementation of conservation policies. Há uma clara mudança acontecendo no ambiente físico da floresta amazônica, onde a intervenção humana se intensificou drasticamente durante a última metade do século XX. Recentes estudos sugerem que mudanças no clima regional causadas pelo desmatamento local possuem o potencial de fazer com que partes da Amazônia atravessem o chamado ponto de desequilíbrio do sistema. Este ponto se refere à probabilidade da Amazônia cruzar um limite crítico, que poderia fazer com que a mesma salte para um estado de equilíbrio bioclimático alternativo, mais seco que o atual. Além do desmatamento amazônico, a remoção total do Cerrado, que atualmente já foi desmatado em mais de 55%, agindo em conjunto o desmatamento da Amazônia, poderia induzir a um aumento na duração da estação seca na região de transição entre floresta e savana (arco do desmatamento), o que pode contribuir para o surgimento de um equilíbrio bioclimático alternativo para a região. Porém, ainda não se sabe quais os limites e sob quais padrões de desmatamento da Amazônia e do Cerrado o clima da floresta será afetado. O objetivo deste trabalho é investigar a resposta do clima de diferentes regiões da floresta amazônica ao desmatamento progressivo da Amazônia e do Cerrado, e verificar a possibilidade do surgimento de equilíbrio bioclimático alternativo para as mesmas. Para atingir esse objetivo, foram gerados 10 cenários de desmatamento amazônico e 10 cenários de desmatamento combinado entre floresta e Cerrado, que foram implantados no modelo acoplado atmosfera-biosfera CCM3-IBIS. Foram rodadas cinco ensembles para cada cenário, e as simulações tiveram a duração de 50 anos, com CO2 fixo em 380 ppm. Os resultados mostram que quando se considera o clima médio para a região total de floresta, não ocorre transposição de equilíbrio. Porém, considerando o clima médio para a região do arco do desmatamento, foi observado o surgimento de equilíbrio bioclimático típico de floresta sazonal, e em regiões no sul, sudoeste e leste da floresta foi observada transição para equilíbrio bioclimático típico de savana. Nos casos em que houve transposição do ponto de desequilíbrio do sistema, o efeito combinado do desmatamento de floresta e Cerrado mostrou-se significativo. Estes resultados mostram a resiliência de algumas regiões da floresta e a fragilidade de outras, o que pode auxiliar tomadores de decisão e conservacionistas na elaboração e implementação de políticas de conservação na floresta.

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico The polar regions are a very important component of Earth's climate system where significant annual and seasonal variations occur. Before this, the objective of this chapter is to analyze the variation of surface temperature in Antarctica and compare them the reanalysis, the analyze of influence that the modes of climate variability on the variation of surface temperature in Antarctica. The observed data used were obtained through READER. Already the reanalysis used were those of the NCEP/NCAR, ERA-Interim and MERRA. With the goal of having a local analysis, the Antarctic continent was divided into five sectors. After the analysis by regions of Antarctica, it became clear that the continent has undergone changes in surface air temperature during the period 1989 to 2009. South Shetland Islands was the sector that has adverse result to compare with the rest of the continent, the trend changed heating to cooling. Another important feature about the trend of temperature in the Antarctic continent was that during the autumn the trend was significant warming in the region of East Antarctica (Continental and Pacific Ocean sectors) and sector of the Weddell Sea, much influenced by the AAO that was significantly correlated with temperature data, especially in the second decade (2000-2009) where the AAO showed a weakening. In terms of reanalysis, realizes that the MERRA presented the best performance for most regions. The only region that the reanalysis showed a weak performance was in the Ross Sea. It is concluded that when working with climate models that take into consideration the reanalysis for Antarctic region, care should be taken to examine the study period and which the region. As regiões polares são um componente importante do sistema climático terrestre onde ocorrem variações sazonais e anuais significativas. Diante disto, o objetivo deste trabalho é analisar a variação da temperatura em superfície na Antártica e compará-las as reanálises, visando analisar a influência que os modos de variabilidade climática exercem sobre a variação da temperatura em superfície na Antártica. Os dados observados utilizados foram obtidos através do READER para o período de 1989 a 2009. Já as reanálises utilizadas foram as do NCEP/NCAR, ERA-Interim e MERRA. Com o objetivo de se ter uma análise local, o continente Antártico foi dividido em cinco setores. Após a análise por regiões da Antártica, ficou claro que o continente passou por mudanças de temperatura do ar em superfície durante o período de 1989 a 2009. As Ilhas Shetland do Sul foi a região que apresentou resultado oposto ao compararmos com o restante do continente, a tendência mudou de aquecimento para resfriamento. Outra característica importante em relação a temperatura no continente Antártico foi que durante o outono a tendência foi de aquecimento significativo na região da Antártica Oriental (setores Continental e Oceano Pacífico) e setor do Mar de Weddell, muito por influência da AAO que apresentou correlações significativas com os dados de temperatura, principalmente na segunda década (2000-2009) onde a AAO apresentou enfraquecimento. Em termos de reanálises, percebe-se que o MERRA apresentou o melhor desempenho para a maioria das regiões. A única região que as reanálises apresentaram fraco desempenho foi no Mar de Ross. Conclui-se que ao trabalhar com modelos climáticos que levam em consideração as reanálises para região da Antártica, deve-se ter o cuidado de analisar o período de estudo e qual a região, a fim de levar em consideração mais de uma reanálise para obter melhor desempenho.

Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Minas Gerais Extratropical cyclones are very important to define global climate. These systems are responsable for the heat transport to poles, preventing the continuous cooling of the extratropical region. The preferential areas of these baroclinic systems are called "Storm Tracks". Cyclones are directly associated to zonal and meridional air or surface temperature gradients. In this context, the variability and changes in the Storm Tracks behavior at present climate and in A1B for global warming scenario are investigated by using the coupled climate model ECHAM5/MPI-OM for the period between 1981 to 2000 (PD), and for global warming (GHG) for the period between 2081 to 2100. The results shows that the climate model used reproduces the variables and the distribuition of ST with reasonable consistency, when compared to the ERA-40 reanalises.It may be concluded that the path of extratropical cyclones delivered by the A1B scenario of global warming shows substantial modification in the sense that the ST moves southward in respect present day position demonstrates that variations in sea ice cover and sea surface temperature play the role heading in the magnitude and preferential area of cyclonic activity in the future climate scenario. Os ciclones extratropicais são muito importantes para definir o clima global. Estes sistemas são responsáveis pelo transporte de calor para os pólos impedindo o arrefecimento contínuo da região. As áreas preferenciais destes sistemas baroclínicos são chamados de "Storm Tracks". Os ciclones são diretamente associados ao gradiente meridional e de temperatura. Neste contexto, a variabilidade e mudanças de comportamento dos Storm Tracks no clima atual e em um cenário de aquecimento global são investigadas por meio do modelo climático acoplado ECHAM5/MPI-OM no período entre 1981 a 2000 (PD) e para o aquecimento global (GHG) para o período entre 2081 para 2100. Os resultados mostram que o modelo climático usado reproduz as variáveis e a distribuição de ST com consistência razoável, quando comparado com o reanalises ERA-40. Os resultados para um cenário de aquecimento global A1B indicam que as trajetórias dos ciclones extratropicais sofrerão uma modificação na sua distribuição, deslocando-se mais ao Sul em direção ao pólo. Isso demonstra que as variações na cobertura de gelo marinho e da temperatura da superfície do mar foram determinantes na redistribuição da atividade ciclônica no cenário climático futuro.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior Global agricultural lands are predicted to expand over the next few decades due to a combination of increasing global population, the need for increased food production, and exponential growth in crop-based biofuels production. The resultant changes in land use could, in turn, greatly impact biogeochemical and biogeophysical cycles across the globe. Therefore, representation of biofuel crops such as sugarcane should be integrated into the latest models to ensure that accurate simulations of the bidirectional feedbacks between the land surface and atmosphere take place. In this study, we present a new process-based sugarcane model, included as a module within the Agro- IBIS dynamic agro-ecosystem model, that can be applied at multiple spatial scales (from site to global). The model may be coupled to an atmospheric model, allowing the simulation of the bi-directional interactions between atmosphere and the sugarcane cropping system. It includes a series of equations and crop management parameters that differ from the standard formulations for annual crops. The model is evaluated against micrometeorological and biomass observations, obtained for one crop cycle (391 days) in northern São Paulo state (Brazil), and yield at a range of spatial scales. The results of the micro-meteorological validation suggest that the model produces robust simulations of seasonal and daily albedo fluctuations, dry biomass, and relationships between net ecosystem exchange (NEE) and atmospheric variables (temperature and relative humidity). At the site level, the model accurately simulated the intensity and variability of daily evapotranspiration (ET) for two consecutive crop cycles at an experimental site at Kalamia estate, northeast Australia. The model also accurately simulated the average yield for the four largest mesoregions (clusters of municipalities) in the state of São Paulo (Brazil), over a period of 16 years, with a relative bias of -0.68% to 1.08%. Finally, a simulation of the annual average sugarcane yield over 31 years for the State of Louisiana (U.S.) produced a low relative bias (-2.67%) but exhibited lower yiled interannual variability than the estimated yields. Considering the results of all validations, we conclude that the new model is able to accurately capture the relationship between yield and climate variability (temperature and precipitation), indicating that the module may be successfully used to forecast changes in sugarcane cropping systems and associated climate interactions. Previsões apontam uma expansão das terras cultivadas ao longo das próximas décadas devido a uma combinação do aumento da população global, com consequente necessidade de aumento da produção de alimentos, e do recente crescimento exponencial da produção de biocombustíveis baseados em cultura agrícolas. As alterações resultantes do uso da terra podem, por sua vez, impactar significativamente os ciclos biogeoquímicos e biogeofísicos ao longo do globo. Portanto, a representação de culturas agrícolas para produção de biocombustíveis, como a cana-de-açúcar, devem ser integradas em modelos de processos superficiais terrestres, possibilitando considerar nas simulações numéricas os feedbacks bidirecionais entre a superfície e a atmosfera. Neste estudo, nós apresentamos um novo modelo mecanicista de crescimento da cultura da cana-de-açúcar, incluído como um módulo dentro do modelo dinâmico de agro-ecossistema Agro-IBIS, que pode ser aplicado em múltiplas escalas espaciais (do local ao global). O modelo pode ser acoplado a um modelo atmosférico, permitindo a simulação das interações bidirecionais entre a atmosfera e o sistema de cultivo de cana. Esse novo módulo inclui uma série de equações e parâmetros de manejo agrícola que diferem das formulações para as culturas anuais pré-existentes. O modelo é avaliado contra observações micro-meteorológicas e de biomassa, obtidas para um ciclo da cultura (391 dias), no norte do Estado de São Paulo (Brasil), e para a produtividade agrícola em diferentes escalas espaciais. Os resultados da validação micro-meteorológica indicam que o modelo produz robustamente as flutuações sazonais e diárias do albedo, biomassa seca, e as relações entre troca líquida do ecossistema (NEE) e das variáveis atmosféricas (temperatura e umidade relativa do ar). Ao nível local, o modelo simulou com precisão a intensidade e a variabilidade diária da evapotranspiração (ET) durante dois ciclos consecutivos da cana-de-açúcar em um sítio experimental na localidade Kalamia, nordeste da Austrália. O modelo simulou com exatidão a média da produtividade da cana-de-açúcar para as quatro maiores mesorregiões produtoras (aglomerados de municípios) do estado de São Paulo (Brasil), durante um período de 16 anos, com viés relativo entre -0,68% e +1,08%. Finalmente, a simulação da produtividade média anual de cana para o Estado de Louisiana (EUA) produziu um viés relativo (-2,67%) baixo, mas apresentou menor variabilidade interanual do que a série de produtividade estimada. Considerando os resultados de todas as validações, podemos concluir que o novo modelo é capaz de capturar a relação entre a produção de biomassa e variabilidade do clima (temperatura e precipitação), indicando que o módulo pode ser utilizado com sucesso para prever alterações nos sistemas de cultivo de cana e as respectivas interações com o clima.

Vegetation fires are the second source of greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere. An important step to reduce the climate impact of these emissions is the investigation of the atmospheric susceptibility of a region for fire development (fire risk). This study aims to investigate the environmental susceptibility to fires, based on two fire risk models: the Haines Index (IH) and the Setzer Index (IS). The study is carried out with data from the ECHAM5/MPI-OM climate model and the NCEP reanalysis data, to calculate both indices during two periods: present day (1980- 2000) and climate projections for the end of the 21st century (2080-2100). The results demonstrate that the fire risk models accurately reproduced the areas with the observed vegetation fire as detected by satellite under actual conditions. A comparison between the results proposed by the IH and IS shows that the Setzer methodology intensified the maximum risk level, and under global warming (GW) conditions, there exist an increase in the atmospheric favorability to fire development in the Amazon region. This is associated with the drying of the atmosphere due to less precipitation and increase in temperature, especially in the central part of Brazil. As queimadas, a nível global, são a segunda maior fonte de emissões de gases de efeito estufa. Um passo importante para a redução dos impactos das queimadas é por meio de investigação da suscetibilidade que um determinado ambiente possui para a queima ou mesmo para o alastramento do fogo (risco de fogo). Diante da necessidade de se conhecer possíveis implicações das mudanças na circulação atmosférica, em um futuro próximo, pretendeu-se, neste trabalho, investigar a suscetibilidade do ambiente a ocorrência de queimadas, baseado em dois índices de risco de queimadas: Índice de Haines (IH) e Índice de Setzer (IS). Para tanto, dados de modelagem numérica do modelo ECHAM5/MPI-OM, e dados das reanálises do NCEP são empregados para os cálculos dos referidos índices em dois períodos: atual (1980-2000) e projeções climáticas para o final do século (2080-2100). Com base nos resultados, concluiu-se que os modelos de risco de fogo reproduziram bem as áreas com maior incidência de queimadas sob condições atuais. A comparação entre os resultados proposto pelo IH e o IS mostra que a metodologia de Setzer intensifica o nível de risco máximo, e sob condições de Aquecimento Global (AG) observou-se um aumento na área de risco em especial para a região Amazônica em ambos os conjuntos de dados. Isto resulta do maior secamento da atmosfera associada à escassez de chuvas e ao aumento da temperatura, em particular para a região Centro-Oeste do Brasil.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior Changes in forests, croplands, water ways and the atmospheric composition throughout the world are occurring because of the need for food, fibers, water and housing for over 6 billion people. Croplands, pasturelands, forest plantations and urban areas have expanded in recent decades, accompanied by large increases in energy, water and fertilizer consumption and a considerable loss in biodiversity. Research has shown that land cover and land use changes have caused important modifications in the quantity and quality of water resources, in addition to changes in climate. This generally occurs through changes in the radiation balance at the surface, and in the partitioning of the radiation balance in sensible and latent heat fluxes, causing modifications in the atmospheric circulation and climate. This work aims at creating a historical database of land use for Amazonia, gheographycally explicit in grid, at a 5' x 5' spatial resolution, in the period 1940 - 1995, for climatic and hydrological studies. The first part of this work, and one of the most important, was to construct the municipal digital meshes of Amazonia in each year the agricultural census was accomplished in the period 1940-1995. The construction of the meshes allowed the calculation of the fractions of cropland, natural pasture and planted pasture inside each municipality, for each year of the census, by dividing the census cropland area in a certain year by the area of this municipality, according with its limits on that same year. In a similar way, the fractions used by natural pasture and planted pasture in each municipality were calculated. The second part was to calculate the proportions of each type of land use between 1995 and the years of census, for each comparable minimum area. And the third and last part was to reconstruct the patterns of land use for Amazonia multiplying the resulting maps of the second stage with two classifications of land use for 1995, based on satellite and census data, developed by Cardille et al. [Global Biogeochemical Cycles, 2002] and Ramankutty et al. [Global Biogeochemical Cycles, 2008]. The results showed that the databases of land use in Amazonia, for the period 1940-1985, show some similar patterns in the study area, for example in the states of Tocantins, Goiás and Mato Grosso, both in intensity as in the spatial distribution of agricultural activities. However, in another regions the two databases were different, mainly in the spatial distribution of the pixels with agricultural activities, such as in the states of Amazonas and Rondônia, where they differed, in intensity, and in distribution. When we compared the two databases of land use with the map of land cover produced by the Tropical Rainforest Information Center (TRFIC), based on Landsat images, it was observed that in most of the compared years, especially for State of Rondônia, the database based on Ramankutty et al. [2008] presented a larger number of pixels containing agricultural activities similar to the deforestation areas in the TRFIC maps, mainly along BR 364, area in that the deforestation was better represented in this database. However, when we compared the maps for the State of Pará, the two databases presented the same number of areas similar to the TRFIC maps. The databases constructed in this work have uncertainties related to the fact that they were created by the merge of two different observations systems. However, in spite of those uncertainties, these databases are the first attempt of reconstructing the historical changes of the cropland, natural pasture and planted pasture in Amazonia, using agricultural census data at municipal level. These historical databases will be useful to help to understand the causes of the climatic changes in Amazonia, as well as to investigate the impacts of the historical changes in the land cover and land use in the water resources and climate of Amazonia. Mudanças em florestas, cultivos agrícolas, vias fluviais e na composição da atmosfera, em todo o mundo, estão ocorrendo pela crescente necessidade de alimentos, fibras, água e moradia para mais de seis bilhões de pessoas. As terras cultivadas (pastagens e plantações) e áreas urbanas têm se expandido nas recentes décadas, acompanhadas por um grande aumento no consumo de energia, água e fertilizantes, juntamente com uma considerável perda de biodiversidade. Alguns estudos têm mostrado que as mudanças na cobertura e no uso da terra também podem afetar o clima. Isto geralmente ocorre por meio de mudanças no saldo de radiação à superfície, e na partição do saldo de radiação em fluxos de calor sensível e latente, causando modificações na circulação atmosférica e no clima. Esse trabalho teve como objetivo criar um banco de dados histórico de uso da terra para a Amazônia, espacialmente explícito em grade, numa resolução de 5 x 5 , no período 1940-1995, para estudos climáticos e hidrológicos. A primeira etapa deste trabalho, e uma das mais importantes, foi a construção das malhas digitais dos municípios da Amazônia para cada ano em que o censo agrícola foi realizado dentro do período de estudo. A construção das malhas possibilitou calcular as frações de área cultivada, pastagem natural e pastagem plantada dentro de cada município, para cada ano do censo, dividindo-se a área cultivada dada pelo censo em um determinado ano pela área deste município de acordo com seus limites nesse mesmo ano. De uma maneira semelhante, foram calculadas as frações utilizadas por pastagem natural e pastagem plantada em cada município. A segunda etapa foi calcular as proporções de cada tipo de uso da terra entre 1995 e os anos de censo, para cada área mínima comparável. E a terceira e última etapa foi reconstruir os padrões de uso da terra para a Amazônia, multiplicando-se os mapas resultantes da segunda etapa com duas classificações de uso da terra para 1995, baseadas em dados de satélite e dados de censo, desenvolvidas por Cardille et al. [Global Biogeochemical Cycles, 2002] e Ramankutty et al. [Global Biogeochemical Cycles, 2008]. Os resultados mostraram que os bancos de dados de uso da terra na Amazônia, para o período 1940-1985, mostraram-se bastante similares em algumas regiões da área de estudo, como por exemplo nos estados de Tocantins, Goiás e Mato Grosso, tanto em intensidade de atividades agrícolas quanto na distribuição espacial das mesmas. Porém, em outras regiões os dois bancos de dados foram distintos, principalmente na distribuição espacial dos pixels com atividades agrícolas tal como nos estados do Amazonas e Rondônia, onde diferiram tanto em intensidade, quanto em distribuição. Quando comparamos os dois bancos de dados de uso da terra com o mapa de cobertura da terra do Tropical Rainforest Information Center (TRFIC), baseados no Landsat, observou-se que na maioria dos anos comparados, especialmente para o Estado de Rondônia, o banco de dados com base em Ramankutty et al. [2008] apresentou um maior número de áreas de pixels contendo atividades agrícolas similares às áreas de desmatamento nos mapas TRFIC, principalmente ao longo da BR 364, área em que o desmatamento foi melhor representado neste banco de dados, tanto em intensidade quanto em distribuição espacial. Contudo, quando comparamos os mapas para o Estado do Pará, os dois bancos de dados apresentaram o mesmo numero de áreas similares aos mapas TRFIC. Os bancos de dados construídos nesse trabalho possuem incertezas relacionadas ao fato de que foram criados pela fusão de dois sistemas de observações diferentes, porém, apesar dessas incertezas, esses bancos de dados são a primeira tentativa de estimar as mudanças históricas das culturas agrícolas, pastagem natural e pastagem plantada na Amazônia, utilizando dados de censo agrícola em nível municipal. Esses bancos de dados históricos serão úteis para ajudar a entender as causas das mudanças climáticas na região amazônica, bem como a investigar os impactos das mudanças históricas na cobertura e no uso da terra nos recursos hídricos e clima na Amazônia.

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico This thesis investigates how the climate feedback and the nutrient feedback interact to regulate the patterns in the regrowth of the Amazon tropical forest after a large-scale deforestation. The study is performed using the fully coupled biosphere-atmosphere model CCM3-IBIS. Initially, the model was validated against observed climate and vegetation dynamics and structure variables. The Amazon climate (annual mean and seasonality) is extremely well simulated for both precipitation and incident solar radiation. Vegetation cover patterns reproduce well the observed patterns. The simulated net primary production and respiration rates are within 5% and 16% of observed data, respectively. The performance of simulated variables that depend on carbon allocation, like net primary production partitioning, leaf area index and biomass, although good on a regional mean, is low when spatial patterns are considered. A better representation of these spatial patterns depends on the understanding of the spatial variation in carbon allocation and its relationship to environmental factors. To evaluate the rainforest regrowth two experiments were done. The first experiment considers different types of nutrient stress and a hypothetical full deforestation. The second experiment considers the most realistic type of nutrient stress and different deforestation scenarios, looking for a threshold of deforestation that could cause dangerous interference on the Amazon recovery. Results show that the reduction in rainfall is proportional to the amount of deforestation and is more drastic when the deforested area is higher than 40% of the original forest extent. In addition, this simulated precipitation reduction alone is not sufficient to prevent the rainforest regrowth. However, when the precipitation reduction is associated with a soil nutrient stress, a savannization process may start over northern Mato Grosso, no matter how much is deforested. This is concerning because this region has the highest clearing rates in Amazonia. The low resilience of the forest under nutrient stress indicates that northern Mato Grosso should be a major target for conservation initiatives. Essa tese investiga como as retroalimentações do clima e da disponibilidade de nutrientes no solo interagem na regulação dos padrões de recrescimento da floresta tropical amazônica após um desmatamento de grande escala. Nesse estudo foi utilizado o modelo acoplado biosfera-atmosfera CCM3-IBIS. Inicialmente, o modelo foi validado através de observações de variáveis climáticas e de dinâmica e estrutura da vegetação amazônica. O clima da Amazônia (média anual e sazonalidade) é muito bem simulado tanto para a precipitação quanto para a radiação solar incidente. Os padrões de cobertura vegetal representam bem os padrões observados. A produção primária líquida e as taxas de respiração simuladas diferem em 5% e 16% das observações, respectivamente. O desempenho das variáveis simuladas que dependem da alocação de carbono, como a partição da produção primária líquida, o índice de área foliar e a biomassa, é alto em uma média regional, mas é baixa quando são considerados os padrões espaciais. Uma melhor representação desses padrões espaciais depende da compreensão da variação espacial da alocação de carbono e sua dependência com fatores ambientais. Para avaliar a capacidade de recrescimento da floresta foram realizados dois experimentos. O primeiro experimento considera diferentes tipos de limitação nutricional e um hipotético desmatamento total. O segundo experimento considera o tipo de limitação nutricional mais realístico e diferentes cenários de desmatamento, com o intuito de encontrar um limite máximo de desmatamento que não causaria interferências prejudiciais na regeneração da floresta. Os resultados mostram que a redução da precipitação é proporcional à quantidade de desmatamento e é mais drástica quando mais do que 40% da extensão original da floresta é desmatada. Além disso, apenas a redução da precipitação simulada não é suficiente para impedir a regeneração da floresta secundária. Entretanto, quando a redução da precipitação é associada com uma deficiência nutricional do solo, um processo de savanização pode ocorrer sobre o norte do Mato Grosso, independente da extensão da área desmatada. Esses resultados são preocupantes, pois essa região tem as mais altas taxas de desmatamento da Amazônia. A baixa resiliência da floresta com deficiência nutricional indica que o norte do Mato Grosso deveria ser o alvo principal de iniciativas para a conservação.

Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Minas Gerais Annual rainfalls data, provived by the Agência Nacional das Águas (ANA), were analyzed with objective of identifying climatically homogeneous data series using the statistical technique of "cumulative residues", starting from data of 78 meteorological stations network of the State of Minas Gerais. For all the climatically homogeneous areas, a reference station was chosen, and later, each reference station data series were analyzed against other rainfall stations within the same homogeneous climatic area. For all over the areas, it was chosen a reference station with the largest number of complete data series, and later, each reference data series was analyzed against the other data series of rainfall stations belonging to the same climatic area. Starting from the identification of statistically homogeneous rainfall data series, an attempt of reconstruction of the series was carried out, by filling of missing values. The "cumulative residues" technique was shown to be very efficient, even when the number of stations used for some climatically homogeneous areas was a limiting factor. After the data series reconstructions, for each station the inverse of the square of the distance method of interpolation (IDW) and the method of ordinary krigging (KG) were used, to analyze the annual precipitation in space for every year between 1942 and 2000. For the krigging algorithm, semi-variograms were adjusted, to verify the degree of space dependence (IDE), by means of spherical model. The IDE mean values found for all analyzed years were about 30.3%, which represent moderate space dependence. Both methods of interpolations employed were also evaluated based on cross validation test, in which it did supply the values of mean error (Em) and the coefficient of variation (ρf). The mean error average found in between 8.198 for the IDW method and 0.457 for the krigging. The coefficients of variation presented varied from 0.121 to 0.372 for IDW and 0.112 to 0.352 for krigging. The results showed that the geostatistic method of ordinary krigging was more efficient than the IDW method with the smallest mean errors (Em) and coefficients of variation (ρf). Os dados anuais de precipitação, fornecidos pela Agência Nacional de Águas (ANA), foram analisados com o objetivo de identificar séries climatológicas homogêneas, por meio de técnicas estatísticas de resíduos cumulativos a partir dos dados de uma rede de 78 estações meteorológicas do Estado de Minas Gerais. Utilizaram-se os resultados apresentados por Aspiazu et al. (1990), que delimitaram 10 regiões climaticamente homogêneas no Estado de Minas Gerais, para a análise de homogeneidade. Para todas as regiões foi escolhida uma estação de referência, e, posteriormente, cada série de referência foi analisada com as outras estações pertencentes à mesma região climática. As estações de referência escolhidas foram as que apresentaram maior número de dados completos dentro de cada região. A partir da identificação de séries homogêneas, foi feita a reconstrução das séries climatológicas, fazendo-se o preenchimento de falhas com dados faltantes. A técnica de resíduos cumulativos empregada mostrou-se eficiente, mesmo o número de estações utilizadas para algumas regiões climaticamente homogêneas ter sido um fator limitante. Depois do preenchimento de falhas, empregou-se o método de interpolação inverso do quadrado da distância (IDW), bem como o método de krigagem ordinária (KG), para posteriormente promover a espacialização da precipitação anual para cada ano entre 1942 e 2000. Com o método de krigagem, foram ajustados semivariogramas, para verificar o grau de dependência espacial (IDE), havendo predominância do modelo esférico. O valor médio do IDE encontrado para todos os anos analisados foi de 30,3%, que representa moderada dependência espacial. Ambos os métodos de interpolação empregados foram avaliados com base no teste de validação cruzada, que forneceu os valores de erro médio (Em) e o coeficiente de variação (ρf). A média do erro médio encontrada foi de 8,198 com o método IDW e 0,457 com o método de krigagem. Os coeficientes de variação variaram de 0,121 a 0,372 para IDW e 0,112 a 0,352 para krigagem. Os resultados evidenciaram que o método geoestatístico de krigagem ordinária se mostrou mais eficiente do que o método de IDW, tendo em vista os menores erros médios.

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico Albedo is defined as a ratio between reflected solar radiation and incoming solar radiation over a surface. It is a main factor that affects the terrestrial radiation balance and has been frequently considered in the global and regional climate studies. Amazon is one of planet s regions where the response of regional atmospheric circulation is more intense. Simulation studies using several models show that a conversion of tropical rainforest in pasturelands causes reduction in the local precipitation, which is mainly dependent of surface albedo changes. The objective of present work is to investigate the sources of spatial and temporal variation of an Amazon tropical rainforest surface albedo, using field measurements, modeling and satellite products; and to investigate the role of surface albedo changes, after Amazon tropical deforestation, in the regional climate. In this work it was used observed data from four forests (Caxiuanã, Cuieiras, Ducke and Jaru Reserves) and two pastures (Dimona and Nossa Senhora Aparecida) belonging to LBA (Large-Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia) and ABRACOS (Anglo Brazilian Amazonian Climate Observation Study) projects. It was also used six different satellite systems: CG99, ERBE, SRB/ISLSCP2, UMD and MODIS white-sky and MODIS blacksky. For the simulation of Amazon tropical rainforest surface albedo the point IBIS (Integrated Biosphere Simulator) model and it coupled to CCM3 climate model was used. The results of this work show that: the main sources of variation of albedo in hourly and monthly scale are the vegetation cover and atmospheric transmissivity, and that the canopy wetness is an important source of variation in hourly scale and should be included in the models; that the simulated albedo show strong sensitivity to superior canopy parameters of leaf orientation and infrared reflectance and no sensitivity was found for the lower canopy parameters, consistent with the canopy structure; that an incorporation of canopy wetness in the radiative transfer calculation improve the results in a hourly scale, reducing the albedo during the hours with precipitation, but not in a seasonal scale, excluding the canopy wetness as a main source of the seasonal variability in tropical rainforest; that the different satellite systems present a considerable variation related to the field measured albedos, including great seasonal differences; that the precipitation anomalies can be explained by a linear relationship between radiative processes, where the changes in surface albedo and net radiation explain approximately 96% and 99% of the annual variation of precipitation and that the replacement of forest by soybean cropland affects more the regional climate than the conversion in pasture, probably due to the high value of soybean cropland albedo O albedo é definido como a razão entre a radiação solar refletida e a radiação solar incidente em uma superfície. É o principal fator que afeta o balanço de radiação terrestre e tem sido freqüentemente considerado em estudos do clima global e regional. A Amazônia é uma das regiões do planeta onde a resposta da circulação atmosférica regional a mudanças do albedo superficial é mais intensa. Estudos de simulação utilizando diversos modelos mostram que a conversão da floresta tropical em pastagem causa uma redução na precipitação local, a qual é principalmente dependente da mudança no albedo da superfície. O presente trabalho tem como objetivos investigar as fontes de variação espacial e temporal do albedo de uma floresta tropical amazônica, usando medições de campo, modelagem e produtos de sensoriamento remoto; e investigar o papel da mudança do albedo da superfície, após o desmatamento Amazônico, no clima regional. Neste trabalho foram utilizados dados de albedo observados em quatro áreas florestais (Reservas Florestais de Caxiuanã, Cuieiras, Ducke e Jaru) e duas pastagens (Dimona e Nossa Senhora Aparecida) pertencentes aos Projetos LBA (Experimento de Grande Escala da Biosfera-Atmosfera na Amazônia) e ABRACOS (Estudos de Observação do Clima na Amazônia Anglo-Brasileira). Também foram utilizados seis produtos de sensoriamento remoto: CG99, ERBE, SRB/ISLSCP2, UMD e MODIS céu-claro e MODIS céu-escuro. Para a simulação do albedo em floresta tropical amazônica foi utilizado o modelo IBIS (Integrated Biosphere Simulator) em duas versões: pontual e acoplado ao modelo climático CCM3. Os resultados deste trabalho mostram que: as principais fontes de variação do albedo em escala horária e mensal são a cobertura vegetal e transmissividade atmosférica, e que o molhamento do dossel é uma importante fonte de variação em escala horária e deve ser incluída em modelos; que o albedo simulado mostrou uma forte sensibilidade aos parâmetros do dossel superior de orientação da folha e de refletância no infravermelho e nenhuma sensibilidade aos parâmetros do dossel inferior, consistente com a estrutura do dossel; que a incorporação do molhamento do dossel nos cálculos de transferência radiativa melhora os resultados de simulação em escala horária, diminuindo o albedo durante as horas de precipitação, mas não em escala sazonal, excluindo o molhamento do dossel como uma fonte principal da variabilidade sazonal do albedo em florestas tropicais; que os diferentes produtos de sensoriamento remoto apresentaram uma variação considerável em relação aos albedos observados em campo, incluindo grandes diferenças sazonais; que anomalias de precipitação podem ser explicadas por uma relação linear entre os processos radiativos, onde mudanças no albedo da superfície e na radiação líquida explicam aproximadamente 96% e 99% da variação anual da precipitação e que a substituição da floresta por soja afeta mais o clima regional que a conversão em pastagem, provavelmente devido ao alto valor do albedo das áreas de soja

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico The Amazon is considered by many one of the most important areas of the planet, including extensive areas of tropical forest. However, the forest has been dramatically modified by the deforestation changes in the CO2 concentration night also affect the forest structure. This work aims at better understand the biosphere-atmosphere interaction in the Amazonian, including both the biogeophysical and the biogeochemical effects of this interaction. For this purpose, an atmosphere general circulation model (CCM3), coupled to the surface model (IBIS), was used. Seven simulations were run: control simulation (F), partial deforestation (D), radiative effects of CO2 (FR), radiative and ecological effects of CO2 (FRE), radiative and ecological effects of CO2 considering the feedback biogeochemical of the vegetation in the carbon cycle (FREB), partial deforestation with the radiative and ecological effects of CO2 (DRE), and partial deforestation with the radiative and ecological effects of CO2 considering the biogeochemical feedback of the vegetation in the carbon cycle (DREB). In these simulations, the effect of the deforestation modify the exchange of energy and water, with more significant changes in the dry season, showing an increase in the albedo in the deforested area, causing a decrease in the evapotranspiration and in the precipitation. The radiative effect of the increase in the CO2 concentration increased the availability of energy at the surface, increasing the sensible heat flux, temperature, and affecting the precipitation, but does not cause changes in the annual mean evapotranspiration. The increase of CO2 concentration alter the structure of the Amazonian forest, increasing LAI and the biomass of the Amazonian basin by 0.61 kg C.m-2, causing a decrease in the precipitation, evapotranspiration and in the latent and sensible heat fluxes. The biogeochemical effect of the vegetation growth, under conditions of total forest and partial deforestation, is noticed in a decrease in the atmospheric CO2 concentration, small changes in climate, showing a decrease in the radiation balance and temperature. A Amazônia é considerada por muitos uma das mais importantes regiões do planeta, abrangendo extensas áreas de floresta tropical. Entretanto, essa floresta vem sendo modificada dramaticamente, pelo desmatamento e pelas modificações na concentração de CO2 que também podem alterar a estrutura da floresta. Este trabalho visa entender melhor a interação biosfera-atmosfera na Amazônia, incluindo tanto os efeitos biogeofísicos quanto os biogeoquímicos desta interação. Para esta finalidade, utilizou-se um modelo de circulação geral da atmosfera CCM3 acoplado ao modelo de superfície IBIS. Foram realizadas sete simulações, isto é, simulação de controle (F), desmatamento parcial (D), efeitos radiativos do CO2 (FR), efeitos radiativos e ecológicos do CO2 (FRE), efeitos radiativos e ecológicos do CO2 considerando a retroalimentação biogeoquímica da vegetação no ciclo do carbono (FREB), desmatamento parcial com os efeitos radiativos e ecológicos do CO2 (DRE), e desmatamento parcial com os efeitos radiativos e ecológicos do CO2 considerando a retroalimentação biogeoquímica da vegetação no ciclo do carbono (DREB). Nessas simulações, o efeito do desmatamento modificou o balanço de energia e de água, com mudanças mais significativas na estação seca, mostrando um acréscimo do albedo na área parcialmente desmatada, levando a uma diminuição na evapotranspiração e na precipitação. O efeito radiativo do aumento na concentração do CO2 disponibilizou mais energia na superfície aumentando o fluxo de calor sensível, a temperatura, e afetando a precipitação, mas não ocasionou mudanças na média anual da evapotranspiração. Já o efeito ecológico do aumento da concentração do CO2 alterou a estrutura da floresta Amazônia, aumentando o IAF e a biomassa da bacia Amazônica em 0,61 kg C.m-2. Houve reduções nas taxas de precipitação, evapotranspiração e nos fluxos de calor latente e sensível. Ao ser considerado o efeito biogeoquímico do crescimento da vegetação, sob condições de floresta total e desmatamento parcial, percebe-se reduções na concentração atmosférica de CO2, pequenas mudanças no clima, mostrando uma diminuição do saldo de radiação, e na temperatura, causando um aumento na precipitação sob condições de floresta e reduzindo com o desmatamento sobre a bacia Amazônica.
