The article examines the emergence of the Mexican Apostolic Catholic Church in the city of Tapachula in the state of Chiapas, Mexico during the period of conflict between the Mexican government and the Catholic Church, which characterized post-revolutionary Mexico. It explains that the this new church represented a break from orthodox Catholicism and aimed to align itself with government policies. It describes how establishment of the new church complicated efforts by authorities in Chiapas to implement anti-Catholic measures mandated by the Mexican government.
