Background and Aims: The PROMINENT trial, a cardiovascular outcome trial of the triglyceride- and remnant cholesterol-lowering agent pemafibrate, has shown neutral results despite reduction in plasma triglycerides and remnant cholesterol. We tested the hypothesis that absolute mass changes in remnant cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and apolipoprotein B explain the results of the PROMINENT trial., Methods: Among 108,431 individuals from the Copenhagen General Population Study (CGPS), those who met the key inclusion criteria of the PROMINENT trial were analyzed to mimic the trial design. Endpoint atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) was cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, and coronary revascularization as defined in PROMINENT., Results: In the PROMINENT trial, treatment with pemafibrate resulted in -7 mg/dL (-0.18 mmol/L; -18 %) change in remnant cholesterol, +10 mg/dL (+0.26 mmol/L; +12 %) LDL cholesterol, and +5 mg/dL (+0.05 g/L; +5 %) apolipoprotein B. In the CGPS mimicking PROMINENT, the estimated hazard ratios for ASCVD were 0.97 (95 % confidence interval: 0.94-0.99) for a -7 mg/dL (-0.18 mmol/L) change in remnant cholesterol, 1.04 (1.01-1.07) for a +10 mg/dL (+0.26 mmol/L) change in LDL cholesterol, and 1.02 (1.01-1.03) for a +5 mg/dL (+0.05 g/L) change in apolipoprotein B. When combining absolute changes in remnant cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and apolipoprotein B, the estimated hazard ratio for ASCVD was 1.05 (0.96-1.14) in the CGPS mimicking PROMINENT compared to 1.03 (0.91-1.15) in the PROMINENT trial., Conclusions: Absolute mass changes in remnant cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and apolipoprotein B can explain results of the PROMINENT trial. The epidemiologic literature on associations between urinary phenol concentrations and lipid profiles during pregnancy is limited. We examined whether urinary concentrations of phenol and phenol replacement biomarkers were associated with serum lipid levels among pregnant women. This cross-sectional study included 175 women attending the Massachusetts General Hospital Fertility Center who enrolled in the Environment and Reproductive Health (EARTH) Study between 2005 and 2017 and had data available on urinary phenol biomarkers and serum lipids during pregnancy. We used linear regression models to assess the relationship between groups of urinary phenol and phenol replacement biomarkers and serum lipid levels [total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein (HDL), non-HDL, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and triglycerides], while adjusting for age at sample collection, pre-pregnancy BMI, education, race, infertility diagnosis, cycle type, number of fetuses, trimester and specific gravity. In adjusted models, pregnant women with urinary propylparaben concentrations in the highest tertile had 10% [22 (95% CI = 5, 40) mg/dL], 12% [19 (95% CI = 2, 36) mg/dL] and 16% [19 (95% CI = 3, 35) mg/dL] higher mean total, non-HDL and LDL cholesterol, respectively, compared to women with concentrations in the lowest tertile. Similar elevations were observed for urinary bisphenol A concentrations. Urinary bisphenol S, benzophenone-3, triclosan, methylparaben, ethylparaben, and butylparaben were unrelated to serum lipids. Background: The lipid profile is reportedly related to peripheral blood pressure or pulse wave velocity. However, no studies have investigated the associations between lipid parameters, especially remnant lipoprotein cholesterol (RLP-C), and central systolic blood pressure (cSBP)., Methods: This study used baseline data of a community-based cohort in Beijing, China. Participants who had been treated with anti-hypertensive or lipid-lowering agents were excluded. RLP-C is equal to total cholesterol (TC) minus the sum of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). An Omron HEM-9000AI device was used to measure non-invasive cSBP. The associations between blood lipid profile and non-invasive cSBP were evaluated using multivariable regression models., Results: The 5173 included participants were 55.0 ± 8.5 years old; 35.7% (1845) of participants were men. Increased cSBP was significantly associated with increased TC, LDL-C, non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C), triglyceride (TG), and RLP-C but with decreased HDL-C, even after adjusting for possible covariates. When simultaneously entering individual pairs of RLP-C and other blood lipid parameters into the multivariable regression model, RLP-C remained significantly associated with cSBP, even after adjusting for other lipids. Compared with participants who had RLP-C levels in the first quartile (Q1), cSBP for those with RLP-C in Q4 was increased to 4.57 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 3.08-6.06) mmHg after adjusting for LDL-C, 4.50 (95%CI: 2.98-6.02) mmHg after adjusting for TC, 3.91 (95%CI: 1.92-5.89) mmHg after adjusting for TG, 5.15 (95%CI: 3.67-6.63) mmHg after adjusting for HDL-C, and 4.10 (95%CI: 2.36-5.84) mmHg after adjusting for non-HDL-C., Conclusions: Increased blood RLP-C level was significantly associated with higher cSBP in a Chinese population, independently of other lipids, which indicates its importance in individual cardiovascular risk assessment.

The aim of present study was to investigate the association of acrylamide (AA) hemoglobin biomarkers and serum lipids level in a general population. Data set of our study were extracted from an open database - National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) 2013-2016. In total 2899 participants were enrolled. The associations between AA hemoglobin parameters [hemoglobin adducts of AA (HbAA) and glycidamide (HbGA), total of HbAA and HbGA (HbAA+HbGA), and ratio of HbGA to HbAA (HbGA/HbAA)] and lipid levels [total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C)] were analyzed. Generalized linear models and restricted cubic spline plots were conducted to address the relationship between lipid levels and acrylamide markers. Comparing the lowest quantiles, HbGA and HbGA/HbAA both remained a significant trend regardless of lipid types. Analyses using a generalized linear model with restricted cubic spline and validated with regression models, all 4 AA parameters demonstrated a linear association and positive correlation with TG. Furthermore, there were also opposite nonlinear association between HbGA/HbAA and LDL-C (positive correlation), and HbGA/HbAA and HDL-C (negative correlation). Further analysis with threshold effect analysis or regression analysis showed HbGA and HbGA/HbAA remained significant association with all TC, TG, LDL-C, and HDL-C. Dietary fatty acids (FA) are essential for overall human health, yet individual FA reference ranges have yet to be established. Developing individual FA reference ranges can provide context to reported concentrations and whether an individual displays deficient, or excess amounts of FA. Reference ranges of sixty-seven individual FA (μmol/L) were profiled and analyzed using gas chromatography with a flame ionization detector from serum samples collected from 476 middle-aged Singaporean males (BMI:23.3 ± 2.9) and females (BMI:21.8 ± 3.6). Measures of triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and total cholesterol (TC) (mmol/L) were also collected. The mean FA concentration seen in this cohort (11,458 ± 2478 was similar to that of overweight North American cohorts assessed in past studies. Ten biologically relevant FA were compared between sexes, with females exhibiting significantly higher concentrations in four FA ( p < 0.05). A multiple regression model revealed the ten FA contributed significantly to nearly all lipid biomarkers ( p < 0.05). A majority of participants who had FA concentrations in the ≥95th percentile also exhibited TG, HDL, LDL, and TC levels in the "high" risk classification of developing cardiovascular disease. Future studies profiling individual FA reference ranges in many unique, global cohorts are necessary to develop cut-off values of individual FA concentrations highly related to disease-risk.

Objectives: To investigate metabolic features that may predispose to GCA in a nested case-control study., Methods: Individuals who developed GCA after inclusion in a population-based health survey (the Malmö Preventive Medicine Project; N = 33 346) were identified and validated through a structured review of medical records. Four controls for every validated case were selected from the database., Results: A total of 76 cases with a confirmed incident diagnosis of GCA (61% female, 65% biopsy positive, mean age at diagnosis 70 years) were identified. The median time from screening to diagnosis was 20.7 years (range 3.0-32.1). Cases had significantly lower fasting blood glucose (FBG) at baseline screening compared with controls [mean 4.7 vs 5.1 mmol/l (S.d. overall 1.5), odds ratio (OR) 0.35 per mmol/l (95% CI 0.17, 0.71)] and the association remained significant when adjusted for smoking [OR 0.33 per mmol/l (95% CI 0.16, 0.68)]. Current smokers had a reduced risk of GCA [OR 0.35 (95% CI 0.18, 0.70)]. Both cholesterol [mean 5.6 vs 6.0 mmol/l (S.d. overall 1.0)] and triglyceride levels [median 1.0 vs 1.2 mmol/l (S.d. overall 0.8)] were lower among the cases at baseline screening, with significant negative associations with subsequent GCA in crude and smoking-adjusted models [OR 0.62 per mmol/l (95% CI 0.43, 0.90) for cholesterol; 0.46 per mmol/l (95% CI 0.27, 0.81) for triglycerides]., Conclusion: Development of GCA was associated with lower FBG and lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels at baseline, all adjusted for current smoking, suggesting that metabolic features predispose to GCA., (© The Author(s) 2020. Background: Having a pregnancy complicated by hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) and/or having a small or preterm baby put a woman at risk for later cardiovascular disease (CVD). It is uncertain if higher maternal CVD risk factors (reflected by increased peripartum CVD biomarker levels) account for this risk, or if experiencing a complicated pregnancy itself increases a woman's CVD risk (reflected by an increase in biomarker trajectories from early pregnancy to postpartum). Methods: We conducted a secondary analysis of an 8-week mindful eating and stress reduction intervention in 110 pregnant women. We used mixed linear regression analysis to compare CVD biomarker levels and trajectories, between women with and without a CVD-related pregnancy complication (including HDP [gestational hypertension or preeclampsia] or having a small for gestational age [<10th percentile] or preterm [<37 weeks] baby), at three times: (1) 12-20 weeks of gestation, (2) 3 months postpartum, and (3) 9 months postpartum. CVD biomarkers studied included serum glucose, insulin, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), body mass index (BMI), blood pressure (BP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor, and lipids. We adjusted for age, maternal smoking, prepregnancy BMI, BP, age × time, and BMI × time. Results: Women had a mean age of 28 years (standard deviation [SD] 6), mean prior pregnancies of 0.8 (SD 1.0), and 22 women had one or more CVD-related pregnancy complications. HOMA-IR, diastolic BP, triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and IL-6 average levels, but not trajectories, differed among women with complicated versus normal pregnancy (all p values were ≤0.04). Peripartum glucose and systolic BP trajectories were statistically greater in complicated versus normal pregnancies ( p values were 0.008 and 0.01, respectively). Conclusion: We conclude that the experience of a complicated pregnancy in addition to elevated CVD risk factor levels may both increase a woman's risk of future CVD. Elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and total cholesterol in midlife and decline in total cholesterol from mid- to late-life are associated with incident dementia. Whether brain amyloid deposition mediates this relationship is unclear. We explored the association between midlife blood lipid levels and mid- to late-life change in lipid levels with brain amyloid deposition assessed using florbetapir PET scans in a biracial sample of 325 nondemented participants of the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities-PET Amyloid Imaging study. Midlife total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides were not significantly associated with late-life amyloid burden after adjusting for covariates. The purpose of this study was to examine the association of birthweight with lipid profile in the general adult population. Participants in the second-wave of a nationally representative cross sectional AusDiab-study were asked to complete a birthweight questionnaire. Fasting total cholesterol (TC), LDL-C, HDL-C, and triacylglycerol levels were modeled against birthweight. Four thousand five hundred and two people reported their birthweights, mean (SD) of 3.4(0.7) kg. Females with low birthweight-LBW had higher levels of TC, LDL-C, and triacylglycerols, but no difference in HDL-C, than those with normal-birthweight-NBW;≥2.5 kg. People with LBW showed a trend toward increased risk for high TC (≥5.5 mmol/L) compared to NBW. Among females with LBW, the risk for high LDL-C (≥3.5 mmol/L) was increased compared to those of NBW. The risk for low HDL-C (<0.9 mmol/L) was increased among males with LBW compared to those with NBW. Examination of the relationship on the continuum showed no differences except for high triacylglycerol levels among females with the lowest birthweight quintile compared to the higher birthweight quintile. However, the risk for various abnormalities by birthweight quintiles was similar to that when we used the traditional definition of LBW vs. NBW. Females and males with low birthweight differ in their risk for lipids abnormalities. Females had higher risk for high LDL-C, whereas males had high risk for low HDL-C (<0.9 mmol/L). In addition, females with low birthweight had the highest triacylglycerol levels. Background: Previous studies have reported an association between hyperlipidemia and pancreatitis in dogs, but details of this association remain poorly defined., Hypothesis/objectives: To compare serum triglyceride and cholesterol concentrations and lipoprotein profiles between dogs with naturally occurring pancreatitis and healthy dogs., Animals: Seventeen dogs with a clinical diagnosis of pancreatitis (Group 1) and 53 healthy control dogs (Group 2)., Methods: Prospective case-control study., Results: In Group 1, 3/17 dogs (18%) had hypertriglyceridemia whereas in Group 2, 4/53 dogs (7.5%) had hypertriglyceridemia (odds ratio [OR], 2.63; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.52-13.14; P = .35). A significant difference was found in serum triglyceride concentrations between Group 1 (median, 67 mg/dL) and Group 2 (median, 54 mg/dL; P = .002). In Group 1, 4/17 dogs (24%) had hypercholesterolemia, whereas 1/53 (1.9%) dogs in Group 2 had hypercholesterolemia (OR, 16; 95% CI, 1.64-155.5; P = .01). No significant difference was found in serum cholesterol concentrations between Group 1 (median, 209 mg/dL) and Group 2 (median, 227 mg/dL; P = .56). Lipoprotein profiles were significantly different between Group 1 and Group 2 dogs (Eigenvalues, 0.6719; R 2 = 1.0; P = .001)., Conclusions and Clinical Importance: Most dogs with pancreatitis (>70%) had serum triglyceride and cholesterol concentrations within reference intervals. In the small percentage of dogs that had hypertriglyceridemia, hypercholesterolemia, or both, increases were mild. Important differences were identified in lipoprotein profiles between dogs with pancreatitis and healthy control dogs. Background: There is strong evidence of a rise in cardiovascular risk in patients suffering from autoimmune diseases, especially in those with Sistemic Lupus Erythematosus. Until now, there are a few trials that assess the potencial benefit of statins on the incidence of cardiovascular events and on lipid profile of patients with SLE. This evidence has not been synthesized and assessed altogether., Methods: We performed a search in databases of literature published until August of 2016 (Embase, MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, SciELO, Clinical Evidence, DynaMed, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, LILACS), identifying controlled clinical trials that could estimate the impact of statins on mortality, cardiovascular events, C-reactive protein and lipid profile in patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. The quality of the information available was assessed with a meta-analysis, using a random effects model, employing the RevMan 5.3 software., Results: 6 trials and 412 patients were included in the analysis. The use of statins in patients with SLE was found to significantly reduce the levels of serum total cholesterol (mean difference [MD] -31,4 mg/dL; CI 95% -43,0; -19,9), and serum low density cholesterol (MD -31,4 mg/dL; IC 95% -43,0; -19,9), but had no impact on levels of serum triglycerides (MD 4 mg/dL; IC 95% 2,49; 6,21) and C-reactive protein (MD -0,78; IC 95% -1,43; -0,13). No evidence was found about the impact on the risk of mortality or cardiovascular events., Conclusion: Statins have a significant effect on the levels of serum total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and C-reactive protein, however, more randomized controlled trials with long-term follow-up are necessary to assess the impact on mortality and cardiovascular risk., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier España, S.L.U. and Sociedad Española de Reumatología y Colegio Mexicano de Reumatología. Background and Aims: Dyslipidemia is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of preventable death worldwide. As a result, a full understanding of the factors influencing dyslipidemia is urgently necessary. Bile acids have been recognized as regulators of lipid metabolism, and neutral sterols may influence serum lipid levels. Therefore, this analysis was conducted to better understand the relationship between bile acids, neutral sterols, and dyslipidemia., Methods: We examined cross-sectional associations between selected fecal metabolites and serum lipids or markers of dyslipidemia in 1387 participants of the KORA FF4 study using linear and logistic regression models., Results: We found positive associations between fecal bile acids and serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), total cholesterol, triglycerides and markers of dyslipidemia, though associations were seen most consistently with triglycerides and hypertriglyceridemia. We also found positive associations between fecal cholesterol and serum LDL-c, total cholesterol, triglycerides, hypertriglyceridemia and high serum total cholesterol, though only associations with triglycerides or hypertriglyceridemia remained significant after applying the Bonferroni correction. Unexpectedly, several fecal plant sterols were positively associated with serum lipids and the associated markers of dyslipidemia. However, many of these associations were no longer statistically significant after adjusting for multiple testing., Conclusions: Our results provide insight into the role that bile acids may play in the development or progression of dyslipidemia. However, further confirmation of these results is warranted. Background: The present study aimed to expound the association between the XK related 6 gene (XKR6) rs7819412 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and serum lipid profiles and the risk of coronary artery disease (CAD) and ischemic stroke., Methods: The genetic makeup of the XKR6 rs7819412 SNP in 1783 unrelated participants (controls, 643; CAD, 588 and ischemic stroke, 552) of Han Chinese was obtained by the Snapshot technology., Results: The genotypic frequencies of the SNP were disparate between CAD (GG, 81.0%; GA/AA, 19.0%) or ischemic stroke (GG, 81.2%; GA/AA, 18.8%) patients and healthy controls (GG, 85.7%, GA/AA, 14.3%; P < 0.05 vs. CAD or ischemic stroke; respectively). The A allele frequency was also diverse between CAD (10.1%) or ischemic stroke (10.0%) and control groups (7.5%; P < 0.05 vs. CAD or ischemic stroke; respectively). The GA/AA genotypes and A allele were associated with high risk of CAD and ischemic stroke (CAD: P = 0.026 for GA/AA vs. GG, P = 0.024 for A vs. G; Ischemic stroke: P = 0.029 for GA/AA vs. GG, P = 0.036 for A vs. G). The GA/AA genotypes were also associated with increased serum triglyceride (TG) concentration in CAD and total cholesterol (TC) concentration in ischemic stroke patients., Conclusions: These data revealed that the XKR6 rs7819412 A allele was related to increased serum TG levels in CAD, TC levels in ischemic stroke patients and high risk of CAD and ischemic stroke.

Modifying dietary fat composition is important for minimizing cardiovascular disease risk. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a 5-day, high-fat diet rich in cottonseed oil (CSO) or olive oil (OO) on lipid profiles. Based on previous human and animal models, we hypothesized that the CSO-rich diet would lead to lower fasting and postprandial lipid levels, whereas the OO-rich diet would not significantly change lipid levels in 5 days. Fifteen normal-weight men completed a randomized crossover design with 2 controlled feeding trials (3-day lead-in diet, prediet visit, 5-day CSO- or OO-rich diet, postdiet visit). The 5-day diets (50% fat) were rich in either CSO or OO. At pre- and postdiet visits, subjects consumed test meals rich in the oil that coincided with their 5-day diet, and blood draws were performed. Fasting total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides (TG) were lower following CSO diet intervention (total cholesterol: 148.40 ± 6.39 to 135.93 ± 6.31 mg/dL; low-density lipoprotein cholesterol: 92.20 ± 5.57 to 78.13 ± 5.60 mg/dL; TG: 80.11 ± 4.91 to 56.37 ± 5.46 mg/dL for pre- to postdiet, respectively; P < .05). High-density lipoprotein cholesterol increased following CSO diet intervention (46.67 ± 2.41 to 50.24 ± 2.20 mg/dL for pre- to postdiet, respectively; P < .05). Postprandial TGs were lower following CSO diet (area under the curve of 954.28 ± 56.90 vs 722.16 ± 56.15 mg/dL/8 h for pre- vs postdiet, respectively; P < .01). No changes in blood lipids were found following OO diet. Objective: Previous work suggests that reduced habitual physical activity is unfavorably associated with cardiometabolic health. Fewer lifestyle-based, experimental studies on this topic have been conducted. Thus, the purpose of this study was to experimentally reduce habitual physical activity over a one-week period to evaluate its potential effects on cardiometabolic profile., Methods: Young physically active adults (M age  = 21 yrs) were randomized into a Reduced Activity Group (N = 19) or a Control Group (N = 20). The Reduced Activity group engaged in baseline week of normal activity, then reduced their activity for one week (from approximately 9000 steps/day to approximately 6000 steps/day), followed by resumption of habitual activity for a week. The Control Group maintained their normal active lifestyle for two-weeks. At all time points, the following cardiometabolic parameters were assessed: systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, mean arterial blood pressure, total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), triglycerides (TG), atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), TC/HDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C, TG/HDL-C, non-HDL-C, and glucose., Results: The Reduced Activity Group, compared to the Control Group, had an unfavorable change in TG/HDL-C (F Interaction  = 4.995, P = 0.03, η 2 p  = 0.14). No other biomarkers were altered CONCLUSION: A one-week period of reduced activity among a young adult, active population, increased TG/HDL-C levels, with no changes observed in any of the other evaluated cardiometabolic parameters. Plasma choline shows associations with plasma glucose and lipids. We studied changes of choline metabolites after oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and fat tolerance test (OFTT). Eighteen healthy subjects (mean age 54.3 years; BMI 26.8 kg/m²) underwent 2 tests. First, OFTT (80 g fat) was applied and blood was collected at baseline and 4 h after OFTT. Seven days later, 75 g glucose was applied and blood was collected at baseline and 2 h after OGTT. Plasma concentrations of choline, betaine, trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), dimethylglycine, S-adenosylmethionine (SAM), lipids and glucose were measured. After OFTT, plasma choline declined (10.6 to 9.2 µmol/L; p = 0.004), betaine declined (33.4 to 31.7 µmol/L; p = 0.003), TMAO slightly increased (4.1 to 5.6 µmol/L; p = 0.105), glucose declined (5.39 to 4.98 mmol/L; p < 0.001), and triglycerides increased (1.27 to 2.53 mmol/L; p < 0.001). After OGTT, plasma choline increased (10.1 to 11.1 µmol/L; p < 0.001), TMAO declined (4.0 to 3.5 µmol/L; p = 0.029), dimethylglycine declined (2.0 to 1.7 µmol/L; p = 0.005), SAM declined (103 to 96 nmol/L; p = 0.041), but betaine, glucose, and SAM were unchanged. In conclusion, OFTT lowered plasma betaine and choline and caused heterogeneous changes in plasma TMAO. OGTT reduced the flow of methyl groups and plasma TMAO.

Background: Mendelian randomization data suggest that the genetic determinants of lifetime higher triglyceride-rich lipoprotein-cholesterol (TRL-C) are causally related to cardiovascular disease and therefore a potential therapeutic target. The relevance of TRL-C among patients receiving statins is unknown. We assessed the relationship between TRL-C and cardiovascular risk, and whether this risk was modifiable among patients receiving statins in the TNT trial (Treating to New Targets)., Methods: Patients with coronary heart disease and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) 130 to 250 mg/dL entered an 8-week run-in phase with atorvastatin 10 mg/d (ATV10). After this period, participants with LDL-C <130 mg/dL entered the randomized phase with ATV10 (n=5006) versus atorvastatin 80 mg/d (ATV80, n=4995). The primary end point was coronary heart disease death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, resuscitated cardiac arrest, or stroke (major adverse cardiovascular events [MACE]). TRL-C was calculated as total cholesterol minus high-density lipoprotein cholesterol minus LDL-C. The effect of atorvastatin on TRL-C was assessed during the run-in phase (ATV10) and randomized phase (ATV80 versus ATV10). The risk of MACE was assessed across quintiles (Q) of baseline TRL-C (and, for comparison, by baseline triglycerides and non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol) during the randomized period. Last, the association between TRL-C changes with atorvastatin and cardiovascular risk was assessed by multivariate Cox regression., Results: ATV10 reduced TRL-C 10.7% from an initial TRL-C of 33.9±16.6 mg/dL. ATV80 led to an additional 15.4% reduction. Cardiovascular risk factors positively correlated with TRL-C. Among patients receiving ATV10, higher TRL-C was associated with higher 5-year MACE rates (Q1=9.7%, Q5=13.8%; hazard ratio Q5-versus-Q1, 1.48; 95% confidence interval, 1.15-1.92; P-trend<0.0001). ATV80 (versus ATV10) did not significantly alter the risk of MACE in Q1-Q2, but significantly reduced risk in Q3-Q5 (relative risk reduction, 29%-41%; all P<0.0250), with evidence of effect modification ( P-homogeneity=0.0053); results were consistent for triglycerides ( P-homogeneity=0.0101) and directionally similar for non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ( P-homogeneity=0.1387). Last, in adjusted analyses, a 1 SD percentage reduction in TRL-C with atorvastatin resulted in a significant lower risk of MACE (hazard ratio, 0.93; 95% confidence interval, 0.86-1.00; P=0.0482) independent of the reduction in LDL-C and of similar magnitude to that per 1 SD lowering in LDL-C (hazard ratio, 0.89; 95% confidence interval, 0.83-0.95; P=0.0008)., Conclusions: The present post hoc analysis from TNT shows that increased TRL-C levels are associated with an increased cardiovascular risk and provides evidence for the cardiovascular benefit of lipid lowering with statins among patients who have coronary heart disease with high TRL-C., Clinical Trial Registration: URL: https://www.clinicaltrials.gov . Background and Aims: Dyslipidemia in HIV-infected patients is unique and pathophysiologically associated with host factors, HIV itself and the use of antiretroviral therapy (ART). The use of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) provides additional data to conventional lipid measurements concerning the number of lipoprotein subclasses and particle sizes., Methods: To investigate the ability of lipoprotein profile, we used a circulating metabolomic approach in a cohort of 103 ART-naive HIV-infected patients, who were initiating non-nucleoside analogue transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI)-based ART, and we subsequently followed up these patients for 36 months. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to evaluate the predictive power of NMR spectroscopy., Results: VLDL-metabolism (including VLDL lipid concentrations, sizes, and particle numbers), total triglycerides and lactate levels resulted in good classifiers of dyslipidemia (AUC 0.903). Total particles/HDL-P ratio was significantly higher in ART-associated dyslipidemia compared to ART-normolipidemia (p = 0.001). Large VLDL-Ps were positively associated with both LDL-triglycerides (ρ 0.682, p < 0.001) and lactate concentrations (ρ 0.416, p < 0.001), the last one a marker of mitochondrial low oxidative capacity., Conclusions: Our data suggest that circulating metabolites have better predictive values for HIV/ART-related dyslipidemia onset than do the biochemical markers associated with conventional lipid measurements. NMR identifies changes in VLDL-P, lactate and LDL-TG as potential clinical markers of baseline HIV-dyslipidemia predisposition. Differences in circulating metabolomics, especially differences in particle size, are indicators of important derangements of mitochondrial function that are linked to ART-related dyslipidemia., (Copyright © 2018 The Authors. Introduction Recent studies have explored the relationship between dyslipidemia and migraine in a cardiovascular context. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the possible association between lipids, lipoprotein subfractions and migraine according to aura symptoms in the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil). Methods 1,560 women and 1,595 men, without CVD or lipid disorders requiring medication, underwent a baseline clinical assessment. Total-cholesterol and its sub-fractions (LDL, VLDL and HDL subclass cholesterol); triglycerides and triglyceride-rich lipoprotein cholesterol [TRL-C (VLDL 1+2 -C VLDL 3 -C + IDL-C)] were determined by vertical auto profile (VAP). We also calculated logarithmic LDL density ratio [LLDR = ln ((LDL 3 -C + LDL 4 -C)/(LDL 1 -C + LDL 2 -C))], T-Chol/HDL-C and triglycerides/HDL-C ratios. Odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were obtained to evaluate the relationship between lipids tertiles and migraine for both sexes. Results Main findings revealed positive associations between migraine without aura (MO) and the highest tertiles of VLDL-C (OR, 1.61; 95%CI, 1.07-2.40) and TRL-C (OR, 1.55; 95% CI, 1.03-2.34) in women. In men, the highest tertile of VLDL 3 -C (OR, 3.87; 95%CI, 1.23-12.19) was positively associated with MO, as well. Conclusions In middle-aged participants without CVD or lipid disorders requiring medication, the worst lipid profile was determined by the highest levels of TRL-C and their cholesterol-rich remnants in migraineurs without aura for both sexes.

Background: Dietary patterns (DPs) in India are heterogenous. To date, data on association of indigenous DPs in India with risk factors of nutrition-related noncommunicable diseases (cardiovascular disease and diabetes), leading causes of premature death and disability, are limited. We aimed to evaluate the associations of empirically-derived DPs with blood lipids, fasting glucose and blood pressure levels in an adult Indian population recruited across four geographical regions of India., Methods: We used cross-sectional data from the Indian Migration Study (2005-2007). Study participants included urban migrants, their rural siblings and urban residents and their urban siblings from Lucknow, Nagpur, Hyderabad and Bangalore (n = 7067, mean age 40.8 yrs). Information on diet (validated interviewer-administered, 184-item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire), tobacco consumption, alcohol intake, physical activity, medical history, as well as anthropometric measurements were collected. Fasting-blood samples were collected for estimation of blood lipids and glucose. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to identify major DPs based on eigenvalue> 1 and component interpretability. Robust standard error multivariable linear regression models were used to investigate the association of DPs (tertiles) with total cholesterol (TC), low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), triglycerides, fasting-blood glucose (FBG), systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP) levels., Results: Three major DPs were identified: 'cereal-savoury' (cooked grains, rice/rice-based dishes, snacks, condiments, soups, nuts), 'fruit-vegetable-sweets-snacks' (Western cereals, vegetables, fruit, fruit juices, cooked milk products, snacks, sugars, sweets) and 'animal food' (red meat, poultry, fish/seafood, eggs) patterns. High intake of the 'animal food' pattern was positively associated with levels of TC (β = 0.10 mmol/L; 95% CI: 0.02, 0.17 mmol/L; p-trend = 0.013); LDL-C (β = 0.07 mmol/L; 95% CI: 0.004, 0.14 mmol/L; p-trend = 0.041); HDL-C (β = 0.02 mmol/L; 95% CI: 0.004, 0.04 mmol/L; p-trend = 0.016), FBG: (β = 0.09 mmol/L; 95% CI: 0.01, 0.16 mmol/L; p-trend = 0.021) SBP (β = 1.2 mm/Hg; 95% CI: 0.1, 2.3 mm/Hg; p-trend = 0.032); DBP: (β = 0.9 mm/Hg; 95% CI: 0.2, 1.5 mm/Hg; p-trend = 0.013). The 'cereal-savoury' and 'fruit-vegetable-sweets-snacks' patterns showed no association with any parameter except for a positive association with diastolic blood pressure for high intake of 'fruits-vegetables-sweets-snacks' pattern., Conclusion: Our results indicate positive associations of the 'animal food' pattern with cardio-metabolic risk factors in India. Further longitudinal assessments of dietary patterns in India are required to validate the findings.

Background: Subclinical hypothyroidism is associated with dyslipidemia and atherosclerosis. Whether these effects are in part mediated via direct effects of thyrotropin (TSH) on peripheral thyroid hormone (TH) metabolism and/or concentrations of serum lipids is not clear., Objective: This study examined whether TSH has direct effects on peripheral TH metabolism and serum lipids., Methods: Eighty-two patients with differentiated thyroid cancer were retrospectively analyzed. All patients had undergone total thyroidectomy and 131 I remnant ablation. During follow-up, two successive injections of recombinant human TSH (rhTSH) were administered to patients on a stable dose of levothyroxine. In all patients, TSH, thyroxine (T4), free T4 (fT4), triiodothyronine (T3), reverse T3 (rT3), total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, apolipoprotein B, lipoprotein(a), and triglyceride levels were measured immediately before the first and approximately 72 hours after the second injection of rhTSH., Results: After rhTSH stimulation, T3 values decreased (from 1.91 to 1.81 nmol/L; p < 0.001). T4, fT4, and rT3 did not change. After rhTSH, median apolipoprotein B increased from 0.90 to 0.92 g/L (p = 0.03), lipoprotein(a) from 0.21 to 0.24 g/L (p < 0.001), and triglycerides from 1.98 to 2.50 mmol/L (p < 0.001). Serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol decreased from 0.98 to 0.81 mmol/L (p < 0.001). Multiple regression analysis showed that the changes in lipids were most closely associated with the decrease in T3 levels., Conclusions: TSH has direct effects on peripheral TH metabolism by decreasing T3 levels in levothyroxine-treated thyroidectomized patients. This decrease in T3 levels is accompanied by unfavorable changes in serum lipids.

Background: Several studies have examined tracking pattern of blood lipids level during long follow-up periods in Western countries. However, there have been few such studies in Asian populations., Methods: The Kangwha Study is a community-based prospective cohort study that started in 1986 on Kangwha Island, South Korea. A total of 432 participants (47% men) were enrolled in the study, during which serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels were measured for each participant at least once during adolescence (12-16 years of age) and again at least once during adulthood (25-35 years of age). The tracking patterns of the blood lipid levels were determined using Spearman correlation coefficients and tracking coefficients from generalized estimating equations., Results: The Spearman correlation coefficients between lipid measurements ranged from 0.12 to 0.73 depending on the lipid profile and measurement time interval; all were significant (p < 0.05). The magnitude of the coefficients tended to decrease as the time interval increased. When adjusted for age, sex, body mass index, and blood pressure, the tracking coefficients were 0.58 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.54-0.63) for total cholesterol, 0.39 (95% CI: 0.31-0.48) for triglycerides, and 0.51 (95% CI: 0.47-0.56) for HDL cholesterol. In a subgroup analysis by sex, the tracking coefficients were higher for women than for men, except for HDL cholesterol., Conclusions: The tracking patterns of blood lipids from adolescence to adulthood were notable. This study supports the importance of measuring lipids during adolescence for identifying high-risk individuals.

Background: Pregnancy is a time of altered metabolic functioning and maternal blood lipid profiles change to accommodate the developing fetus. While these changes are physiologically necessary, blood lipids concentrations have been associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes such as gestational diabetes, pregnancy-induced hypertension and high birth weight. As blood lipids are not routinely measured during pregnancy, there is limited information on what is considered normal during pregnancy and in fetal blood., Methods: Data from 327 mother-child pairs from the ROLO longitudinal birth cohort study were analysed. Fasting total cholesterol and triglycerides were measured in early and late pregnancy and fetal cord blood. Intervals were calculated using the 2.5th, 50th and 97.5th centile. Data was stratified based on maternal body mass index (BMI) measured during early pregnancy. Differences in blood lipids between BMI categories were explored using ANOVA and infant outcomes of macrosomia and large-for-gestational-age (LGA) were explored using independent student T-tests and binary logistic regression., Results: All maternal blood lipid concentrations increased significantly from early to late pregnancy. In early pregnancy, women with a BMI < 25 kg/m 2 had lower concentrations of total cholesterol compared to women with a BMI of 25-29.9 kg/m 2 (P = 0.02). With triglycerides, women in the obese category (BMI > 30 kg/m 2 ) had higher concentrations than both women in the normal-weight and overweight category in early and late pregnancy (P < 0.001 and P = 0.03, respectively). In late pregnancy, triglyceride concentrations remained elevated in women in the obese category compared to women in the normal-weight category (P = 0.01). Triglyceride concentrations were also elevated in late pregnancy in mothers that then gave birth to infants with macrosomia and LGA (P = 0.01 and P = 0.03, respectively)., Conclusion: Blood lipid concentrations increase during pregnancy and differ by maternal BMI. These intervals could help to inform the development of references for blood lipid concentrations during pregnancy., Trial Registration: ROLO Study - ISRCTN54392969 . Background: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is caused by loss of dystrophin expression and leads to severe ambulatory and cardiac function decline. However, the dystrophin-deficient mdx murine model of DMD only develops a very mild form of the disease. Our group and others have shown vascular abnormalities in animal models of MD, a likely consequence of the fact that blood vessels express the same dystrophin-associated glycoprotein complex (DGC) proteins as skeletal muscles., Methods: To test the blood vessel contribution to muscle damage in DMD, mdx 4cv mice were given elevated lipid levels via apolipoprotein E (ApoE) gene knockout combined with normal chow or lipid-rich Western diets. Ambulatory function and heart function (via echocardiogram) were assessed at 4 and 7 months of age. After sacrifice, muscle histology and aortic staining were used to assess muscle pathology and atherosclerosis development, respectively. Plasma levels of total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), triglycerides, and creatine kinase (CK) were also measured., Results: Although there was an increase in left ventricular heart volume in mdx-ApoE mice compared to that in mdx mice, parameters of heart function were not affected. Compared with wild-type and ApoE-null, only mdx-ApoE KO mice showed significant ambulatory dysfunction. Despite no significant difference in plasma CK, histological analyses revealed that elevated plasma lipids in chow- and Western diet-fed mdx-ApoE mice was associated with severe exacerbation of muscle pathology compared to mdx mice: significant increase in myofiber damage and fibrofatty replacement in the gastrocnemius and triceps brachii muscles, more reminiscent of human DMD pathology. Finally, although both ApoE and mdx-ApoE groups displayed increased plasma lipids, mdx-ApoE exhibited atherosclerotic plaque deposition equal to or less than that of ApoE mice., Conclusions: Since others have shown that lipid abnormalities correlate with DMD severity, our data suggest that plasma lipids could be primary contributors to human DMD severity and that the notoriously mild phenotype of mdx mice might be attributable in part to their endogenously low plasma lipid profiles. Hence, DMD patients may benefit from lipid-lowering and vascular-targeted therapies.

Data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for the years 2007-2012 were used to investigate associations between thyroid hormones and lipid/lipoprotein levels for a representative sample of general US population aged ≥20 years. There were no statistically significant differences for adjusted high density lipoprotein levels among thyroid function groups, namely, subclinical hyperthyroid (SCHPR), clinical hyperthyroid (CHPR), euthyroid (EU), clinical hypothyroid (CHYP), and subclinical hypothyroid (SCHYP). For the general US population, positive associations for thyroid stimulating hormones (TSH) and negative associations for free thyroxine (FT4) levels were observed with total cholesterol (TC, p<0.01), apolipoprotein B (APOB, p<0.01), and triglycerides (TG, p<0.01). A 10% increase in TC levels was associated with a 2% increase in TSH levels and 0.8% decrease in FT4 levels. Among EU subjects, TG levels were positively correlated with TSH (p<0.01) and negatively correlated with FT4 (p<0.01). For CHYP subjects, TG levels were negatively correlated with TSH (p<0.01). For iodine deficient participants, low density lipoprotein levels (LDL) were lower for SCHPR when compared with EU or CHYP (p<0.01). TC levels were usually lower for SCHPR than for EU, CHYP, and SCHYP but the differences were not necessarily statistically significant. For all participants and for iodine replete participants, TG levels for SCHPR were lower than for CHYP (p<0.01). CHYP and SCHYP had higher levels of TG than other three thyroid function groups. APOB levels were lower for SCHPR than for EU and CHYP for all participants and for iodine replete participants (p<0.01). There was a positive association between the four quartiles of thyroid stimulating hormones and TC, TG, and APOB. Background: Dyslipidemia is reported in 27 - 43% of children and adolescents with overweight/obesity and tracks into adulthood, increasing the risk of cardiovascular morbidity. Cut-off values for fasting plasma lipid concentrations are typically set at fixed levels throughout childhood. The objective of this cross-sectional study was to generate fasting plasma lipid references for a Danish/North-European White population-based cohort of children and adolescents, and investigate the prevalence of dyslipidemia in this cohort as well as in a cohort with overweight/obesity., Methods: A population-based cohort of 2141 (1275 girls) children and adolescents aged 6 - 19 (median 11.5) years was recruited from 11 municipalities in Denmark. Additionally, a cohort of children and adolescents of 1421 (774 girls) with overweight/obesity aged 6 - 19 years (median 11.8) was recruited for the study. Height, weight, and fasting plasma lipid concentrations were measured on all participants. Smoothed reference curves and percentiles were generated using the Generalized Additive Models for Location Scale and Shape package in the statistical software R., Results: In the population-based cohort, plasma concentrations of total cholesterol (TC) (P < 0.05), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL) (P < 0.005), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) (P < 0.005) were higher in the youngest compared to the oldest tertile. Fasting plasma levels of triglycerides (TG) (P < 0.005) increased with age in both sexes. In boys, non-HDL was lower in the oldest compared to the youngest tertile (P < 0.0005). Concentrations of TC, LDL, non-HDL, and TG were higher (P < 0.05), and HDL lower (P < 0.05) in the cohort with overweight/obesity in both sexes and for all ages except for TC in the youngest girls. The overall prevalence of dyslipidemia was 6.4% in the population-based cohort and 28.0% in the cohort with overweight/obesity. The odds ratio for exhibiting dyslipidemia in the cohort with overweight/obesity compared with the population-based cohort was 6.2 (95% CI: 4.9 - 8.1, P < 2*10 -16 )., Conclusion: Fasting plasma lipid concentrations change during childhood and adolescence and differ with sex and age. Children and adolescents with obesity have increased concentrations of circulating lipids and exhibit an increased prevalence of dyslipidemia., Trial Registration: The study is part of The Danish Childhood Obesity Biobank; ClinicalTrials.gov ID-no.: NCT00928473 retrospectively registered on June 25th 2009.

Objective: To investigate the correlations between lipid ratio/oxidative stress status in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients and pulmonary hypertension as well as the prognosis.
 Methods: A total of 120 patients with COPD were randomly selected and served as the COPD group and 30 healthy persons were selected as the control group. The ratios of low density lipoprotein (LDL)/high-density lipoprotein (HDL), triglyceride (TG)/HDL and total cholesterol (TC)/HDL were measured. The superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, malondialdehyde (MDA) content and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) level in the control group and COPD patients were detected. Pulmonary hypertension incidence and 3-year survival rate for COPD patients were statistically analyzed. Spearman rank correlation method was used to analyze relationship between lipid ratio /oxidative stress status and pulmonary hypertension.
 Results: Compared with control group, the ratios of LDL/HDL, TG/HDL and TC/HDL, and the serum MDA level in the COPD group were increased, while the serum SOD and T-AOC level in the COPD group were decreased; compared with stable period, lipid ratios and MDA levels in the acute period were elevated, while serum SOD and T-AOC levels were reduced (P<0.05). Pulmonary hypertension incidence and 3-year survival rates in the COPD group were 56.67% and 81.67% respectively; the lipid ratios and serum MDA levels in COPD patients with pulmonary hypertension were elevated compared with that in COPD patients without pulmonary hypertension; the serum SOD and T-AOC levels in COPD patients with pulmonary hypertension were reduced compared with that in patients without pulmonary hypertension (P<0.05). Spearman rank correlation analysis showed that ratios of LDL/HDL, TG/HDL and TC/HDL, and the serum MDA levels in COPD patients were positively correlated with 3-years pulmonary hypertension incidence (r=0.752, 0.748, 0.752, 0.748; P<0.05), and negatively correlated with 3-years survival rate (r=-0.722, -0.751, -0.736, -0.748; P<0.05); serum SOD and T-AOC levels in COPD patients were negatively correlated with 3-years pulmonary hypertension (r=-0.711, -0.734; P<0.05), and positively correlated with 3-year survival rate (r=0.726, 0.733; P<0.05). 
 Conclusion: Blood lipid ratio and oxidative stress levels in COPD patients are elevated while antioxidant abilities were attenuated. The lipid ratio and oxidative stress status in COPD patients is closely related to the prognosis of pulmonary hypertension. Therefore, blood lipid ratio and oxidative stress status may be used in evaluation of pulmonary hypertension and prognosis for COPD patients.

Dietary fibres have diverse mechanisms in reducing plasma cholesterol, which could be useful for treating high levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). The objective of this review is to determine the state of the evidence for the cholesterol-lowering effects of three selected fibres and their mechanisms, using the most recent animal trials. Therefore, a systematic review was conducted for hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), pectin and chitosan in Pubmed, Embase and the Cochrane Library. All fibres reviewed reduced total cholesterol, very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-C) and LDL-C. Pectin gave a small, and chitosan an impressive rise in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). A limitation of this study is the variety of animal models, each with distinct cholesterol profiles. Possible publication bias was also detected. In conclusion, chitosan seems to be the most promising of the studied fibres. A dietary fibre could be designed that yields the best cholesterol-lowering effect, using experiences in tailoring physicochemical properties and primarily exploiting the biophysical mechanisms of action., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Background: Remnant lipoproteins (RLPs), the triglyceride-enriched precursors to low-density lipoprotein, are an emerging risk factor for coronary heart disease (CHD). We sought to determine the association of RLP cholesterol (RLP-C) levels with incident CHD in 2 diverse, prospective, longitudinal observational US cohorts., Methods and Results: We analyzed cholesterol levels from serum lipoprotein samples separated via density gradient ultracentrifugation in 4114 US black participants (mean age 53.8 years, 64% women) from the Jackson Heart Study and a random sample of 818 predominantly white participants (mean age 57.3 years, 52% women) from the Framingham Offspring Cohort Study. Multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) for RLP-C (the sum of very low-density lipoprotein3 cholesterol and intermediate-density lipoprotein cholesterol) were derived to estimate associations with incident CHD events consisting of myocardial infarction, CHD death, and revascularizations for each cohort separately and as a combined population. There were 146 CHD events in the combined population. After adjustments for age, sex, body mass index, smoking, blood pressure, diabetes, and lipid-lowering therapy for the combined population, RLP-C (HR 1.23 per 1-SD increase, 95% CI 1.06-1.42, P<0.01) and intermediate-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HR 1.26 per 1-SD increase, 95% CI 1.08-1.47, P<0.01) predicted CHD during an 8-year follow-up. Associations were attenuated by high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and ultimately lost significance with inclusion of real low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, which excludes Lp(a) and IDL cholesterol fractions. Similar associations were seen in multivariable analyses within each cohort., Conclusion: RLP-C levels are predictive of incident CHD in this diverse group of primary prevention subjects. Objective: To evaluate the rate of change in serum lipids and the factors associated with their variations, stratifying for pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) categories., Design: Prospective cohort., Setting: Public Health centre, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil., Population: Two hundred and twenty-five healthy pregnant women recruited between 2009 and 2011., Methods: Women were evaluated during the three trimesters of pregnancy (5th-13th, 20th-26th and 30th-36th gestational weeks). Pre-pregnancy BMI (kg/m²) was classified as normal weight (NW = 18.5-24.9), overweight (OW = 25.0-29.9) or obese (OB ≥ 30.0). The independent variables included maternal socioeconomic, demographic, biochemical and lifestyle factors. We performed linear mixed-effects models adjusted for gestational age and body weight, reporting coefficient (β) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI)., Main Outcome Measures: Longitudinal total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein (HDL-c), low-density lipoprotein (LDL-c) and triglyceride (TG) measurements., Results: OW and OB women presented higher mean TG, TC and LDL-c compared with their NW counterparts (P < 0.05). The mean HDL-c concentrations were higher in NW than in OB women (P = 0.03). OW and OB women presented lower serum TC (βOW  = -0.014; 95% CI = -0.026 to -0.002; P = 0.022; βOB  = -0.015; 95% CI -0.015 to 0.001; P = 0.066) and LDL-c (βOW  = -0.012; 95% CI = -0.021 to -0.002; P = 0.017; βOB  = -0.018; 95% CI = -0.031 to -0.005; P = 0.005) rates of change (mmol/l per gestational week) compared with the NW. The role of lipids in providing energy and structural cellular components during vertebrate development is poorly understood. To elucidate these roles further, we visualized lipid deposition and examined expression of key lipid-regulating genes during zebrafish embryogenesis. We also conducted a semiquantitative analysis of lipidomic composition using liquid chromatography (LC)-mass spectrometry. Finally, we analyzed processing of boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) lipid analogs injected into the yolk using thin layer chromatography. Our data reveal that the most abundant lipids in the embryo are cholesterol, phosphatidylcholine, and triglyceride. Moreover, we demonstrate that lipids are processed within the yolk prior to mobilization to the embryonic body. Our data identify a metabolically active yolk and body resulting in a dynamic lipid composition. We aimed to compare changes in insulin levels during an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) between women with normal glucose tolerance (NGT) during pregnancy and those with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Overall, 105 pregnant women between 24 and 28 weeks' gestation, 50 with NGT and 55 with GDM according to NDDG standard, were enrolled into the study. The levels of fasting blood glucose, insulin, triglyceride (TG) and total cholesterol (TC) and the insulin levels, blood glucose levels at 1, 2 and 3 hours post oral glucose administration during an OGTT (5.8, 10.6, 9.2 and 8.1 mmol/L, respectively) were measured. Then, insulin resistance (IR) index was calculated. There was no significant difference in fasting, 3-h insulin levels and 3-h blood glucose levels between those with NGT and those with GDM (P > 0.05). However, 1-h and 2-h insulin levels, fasting and 1-h and 2-h blood glucose levels in women with GDM were significantly higher than those in the NGT group (P < 0.05). Fasting TC and TG levels in the GDM group were significantly higher than those with NGT (P = 0.031 and P = 0.025, respectively). Correlation analysis showed that TG and TC levels were positively correlated with homoeostasis model assessment-IR (HOMA-IR) (r = 0.67 and r = 0.78, respectively; P < 0.05). Our findings suggest that insulin sensitivity in women with GDM was significantly lower than that observed in those with NGT. Reducing IR and blood lipids in women with GDM could potentially improve maternal and foetal outcomes.

Background: There are several well-established lifestyle factors influencing dyslipidemia and currently; 157 genetic susceptibility loci have been reported to be associated with serum lipid levels at genome-wide statistical significance. However, the interplay between lifestyle risk factors and these susceptibility loci has not been fully elucidated. We tested whether genetic risk scores (GRS) of lipid-associated single nucleotide polymorphisms associate with fasting serum lipid traits and whether the effects are modulated by lifestyle factors or estimates of metabolic health., Methods and Results: The single nucleotide polymorphisms were genotyped in 2 Danish cohorts: inter99 (n=5961) for discovery analyses and Health2006 (n=2565) for replication. On the basis of published effect sizes of single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with circulating fasting levels of total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, or triglyceride, 4 weighted GRS were constructed. In a cross-sectional design, we investigated whether the effect of these weighted GRSs on lipid levels were modulated by diet, alcohol consumption, physical activity, and smoking or the individual metabolic health status as estimated from body mass index, waist circumference, and insulin resistance assessed using homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance. All 4 lipid weighted GRSs associated strongly with their respective trait (from P=3.3×10(-69) to P=1.1×10(-123)). We found interactions between the triglyceride weighted GRS and body mass index and waist circumference on fasting triglyceride levels in Inter99 and replicated these findings in Health2006 (P(interaction)=9.8×10(-5) and 2.0×10(-5), respectively, in combined analysis)., Conclusions: Our findings suggest that individuals who are obese may be more susceptible to the cumulative genetic burden of triglyceride single nucleotide polymorphisms. Purpose: Studies linking cholesterol levels to the development of colorectal neoplasia are inconsistent, and Mendelian randomization has been suggested as a way to help avoid problems with confounding and reverse causation., Methods: We genotyped individuals who received a colonoscopy at Group Health (1998-2007) for 96 of 102 single-nucleotide polymorphisms identified by the Global Lipids Genetics Consortium. Participants included 139 advanced adenoma cases, 518 non-advanced adenoma cases, 380 non-adenomatous polyp cases, and 754 polyp-free controls. All had at least one available pre-colonoscopy lipid measurement from electronic records maintained by Group Health., Results: Advanced adenoma cases were more likely than controls to have higher pre-colonoscopy zenith low-density lipoprotein (LDL), triglycerides (TG), and total cholesterol (TC) (odds ratio, OR per 20 mg/dL LDL increase: 1.16, 95 % confidence interval, CI 1.03-1.30; per 40 mg/dL TG increase: 1.09, 1.03-1.16; and per 20 mg/dL TC increase: 1.09, 1.02-1.18). For these traits, genotype-polyp ORs using weighted allele scores were not statistically significant (OR per increase in score scaled to a 20 mg/dL LDL increase: 1.17, 0.78-1.75; a 40 mg/dL TG increase: 1.12, 0.91-1.38; a 20 mg/dL TC increase: 0.99, 0.71-1.38)., Conclusions: Cholesterol levels may be associated with advanced adenomas, but larger studies are warranted to determine whether this association can be attributed to genetics.

Objective: The aim of the current study was to determine any relationship between the timing of clamping of the umbilical cord and the lipid levels circulating in umbilical artery and vein., Methods: We studied a clinical trial with systematic assignment in 229 single-fetus full-term deliveries with normal gestational course and spontaneous delivery; out of these, 111 were subjected to early clamping (EC, within 10 s of delivery) and 118 to late clamping (LC, at 2 min). In all cases, total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), and phospholipids were measured in sera from umbilical artery and vein., Results: TC and TG values were significantly higher in the EC group than in the LC group in both umbilical artery and vein. Comparing values between umbilical artery and vein in the two clamping groups, in the EC group, all studied lipids TC, TG and phospholipids were significantly higher in vein than in artery. In the LC group, only TC was higher in vein., Conclusion: Umbilical cord lipid levels are related to the timing of umbilical cord clamping, finding which is noteworthy, because they are essential component of postnatal development. Our study confirms that delivery acts as an important modifier of fetal lipid levels.

Background: Chylothorax is a rare anatomical disruption of the thoracic duct associated with a significant degree of morbidity and mortality. Diagnosis usually relies upon lipid analysis and visual inspection of the pleural fluid. However, this may be subject to incorrect interpretation. The aim of this study was to compare pleural fluid lipid analysis and visual inspection against lipoprotein electrophoresis., Methods: Nine pleural effusion samples suspected of being chylothorax were analysed. A combination of fluid lipid analysis and visual inspection was compared with lipoprotein electrophoresis for the detection of chylothorax., Results: There was 89% concordance between the two methods. Using lipoprotein electrophoresis as gold standard, calculated sensitivity, specificity, negative predictive value and positive predictive value for lipid analysis/visual inspection were 83%, 100%, 100% and 75%, respectively., Conclusion: Examination of pleural effusion samples by lipoprotein electrophoresis may provide important additional information in the diagnosis of chylothorax., (© The Author(s) 2014 Reprints and permissions: sagepub.co.uk/journalsPermissions.nav.)

The effect of experimental exposure of Bradybaena similaris by Eurytrema coelomaticum on the cholesterol and triglycerides total levels circulating in the hemolymph and the neutral lipids in the digestive gland-gonad (DGG) complex of the host snail were studied. In this study, snails were dissected after one, two, and three months of infection to collect the hemolymph and DGG to measure the cholesterol and triacylglycerol levels in the hemolymph and neutral lipid fractions in the tissues. The results for the hemolymph showed that the infection by this trematode resulted in a significant decrease in the concentrations of triacylglycerol during all periods analyzed, as well as, increase in the levels of cholesterol observed after the second and third months of study. This decrease suggests the possible use of triacylglycerol by both parasite and host as alternative substrate in maintaining their energy metabolisms. In parallel, the increase in the contents of cholesterol results from a severe cellular disorganization in snail, especially DGG, as a consequence of the intense plastic processes showed by parasite. Additionally, changes in the neutral lipid profile in the DGG of the infected snails were observed, indicating the importance of these molecules for successful infection., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Inc. Background: Little is known about the association of ZNF259 rs2075290 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and serum lipid levels in the Chinese population. This study aimed to detect the association of ZNF259 rs2075290 SNP and environmental factors with serum lipid levels between males and females in the Mulao and Han populations., Methods and Results: Genotyping of ZNF259 rs2075290 SNP was performed in 788 of Mulao and 778 of Han participants using polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism. The genotype frequencies were significantly different between Mulao and Han populations (AA, 50.1% Vs 58.9%; AG, 42.3% Vs 35.7%; GG, 7.6% Vs 5.4%, P = 0.002) and between Han males and females (AA, 64.5% Vs 55.2%; AG, 28.3% Vs 40.6%; GG, 7.2% Vs 4.2%, P = 0.001). Serum levels of triglyceride (TG) in Mulao males, and total cholesterol (TC), TG and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) in Mulao females were different between the AA and AG/GG genotypes (P < 0.05-0.001). Serum TC, LDL-C and apolipoprotein (Apo) A1 levels in Han males, and TG and ApoB levels and ApoA1/ApoB ratio in Han females were different between the AA and AG/GG genotypes (P < 0.05-0.001). An interaction between ZNF259 rs2075290 polymorphism and male gender on serum TC, LDL-C, and ApoA1 levels was noted in Han population (P < 0.05-0.01) but not in Mulao's., Conclusions: The subjects with AG/GG genotype in Mulao males and females and Han females have less favorable lipid profiles than those with AA genotype. In contrast, the subjects with AG/GG genotype in Han males have more favorable lipid profiles than those with AA genotype. These findings suggest that the association between ZNF259 rs2075290 SNP and serum lipid levels might have ethnic- and/or sex-specificity.

Background: Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) is a filamentous cyanobacterium used as a food supplement. The objective of the study was to determine the lipid-lowering effects of Spirulina in Cretan Greek dyslipidaemic patients, and to document its effectiveness as a possible alternative treatment for dyslipidaemia. Fifty-two adultCretan outpatients (32 men, 20 women), median age 47 (range, 37-61) years, with recently diagnosed dyslipidaemia, consumed orally 1 g Spirulina (Greek production) per day for 12 weeks. The full lipid profile was measured in fasting blood samples at the beginning and end of the study period. Anthropometric measurements including systolic and diastolic blood pressure, height, weight and body mass index were also recorded., Results: At the end of the 3-month intervention period the mean levels of triglycerides, low density lipoprotein-cholesterol, total cholesterol, non-high density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels, and the ratio of total cholesterol to high-density lipoproteincholesterol were significantly decreased: 16.3% (P < 0.0001), 10.1% (P < 0.0001), 8.9% (P < 0.0001), 10.8% (P < 0.0001) and 11.5% (P = 0.0006) respectively, whereas the mean high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels were not significantly increased (3.5%). Blood pressure, weight and body mass index remained almost unchanged., Conclusions: Spirulina supplementation at a dose of 1 g daily has powerful hypolipidaemic effects, especially on the triglyceride concentration in dyslipidaemic Cretan outpatients., (© 2013 Society of Chemical Industry.)

Relationship loci (rQTL) exist when the correlation between multiple traits varies by genotype. rQTL often occur due to gene-by-gene (G × G) or gene-by-environmental interactions, making them a powerful tool for detecting G × G. Here we present an empirical analysis of apolipoprotein E (APOE) with respect to lipid traits and incident CHD leading to the discovery of loci that interact with APOE to affect these traits. We found that the relationship between total cholesterol (TC) and triglycerides (ln TG) varies by APOE isoform genotype in African-American (AA) and European-American (EA) populations. The e2 allele is associated with strong correlation between ln TG and TC while the e4 allele leads to little or no correlation. This led to a priori hypotheses that APOE genotypes affect the relationship of TC and/or ln TG with incident CHD. We found that APOE*TC was significant (P = 0.016) for AA but not EA while APOE*ln TG was significant for EA (P = 0.027) but not AA. In both cases, e2e2 and e2e3 had strong relationships between TC and ln TG with CHD while e2e4 and e4e4 results in little or no relationship between TC and ln TG with CHD. Using ARIC GWAS data, scans for loci that significantly interact with APOE produced four loci for African Americans (one CHD, one TC, and two HDL). These interactions contribute to the rQTL pattern. rQTL are a powerful tool to identify loci that modify the relationship between risk factors and disease and substantially increase statistical power for detecting G × G.

Objective: To explore the association between apolipoprotein AI (ApoAI) gene rs12721026 polymorphism and cerebral hemorrhage (CH) in Changsha Han population, and to evaluate the effect of rs12721026 polymorphism on plasma lipid levels., Methods: A total of 273 patients with CH and 140 healthy controls were collected. The rs12721026 polymorphism of ApoAI was analyzed by SNaPshot genotyping analysis and DNA sequencing. The total cholesterol (TG), triglyceride (TC), HDL-C and LDL-C were examined by oxidase method., Results: There was no significant difference in the genotype and allele frequencies of rs12721026 polymorphism between the CH group and the control group (P>0.05). Both in the CH group and in the control group, the level of HDL-C of the TT gene type of rs12721026 was significantly higher than that of the GT/GG gene type (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in the levels of TG, TC and LDL-C among different subgroups of gene types., Conclusion: There may be no association between apoAI gene rs12721026 polymorphism with CH in Changsha Han population, which may still influence the HDL-C levels.

The present study evaluated the preventive effects of p-coumaric acid on cardiac hypertrophy and alterations in electrocardiogram, lipids, and lipoproteins in experimentally induced myocardial infarcted rats. Rats were pretreated with p-coumaric acid (8 mg/kg body weight) daily for a period of 7 days and then injected with isoproterenol (100mg/kg body weight) on 8th and 9th day to induce myocardial infarction. Myocardial infarction induced by isoproterenol was indicated by increased level of cardiac sensitive marker and elevated ST-segments in the electrocardiogram. Also, the levels/concentrations of serum and heart cholesterol, triglycerides and free fatty acids were increased in myocardial infarcted rats. Isoproterenol also increased the levels of serum low density and very low density lipoprotein cholesterol and decreased the levels of high density lipoprotein cholesterol. It also enhanced the activity of liver 3-hydroxy-3 methyl glutaryl-Coenzyme-A reductase. p-Coumaric acid pretreatment revealed preventive effects on all the biochemical parameters and electrocardiogram studied in myocardial infarcted rats. The in vitro study confirmed the free radical scavenging property of p-coumaric acid. Thus, p-coumaric acid prevented cardiac hypertrophy and alterations in lipids, lipoproteins, and electrocardiogram, by virtue of its antihypertrophic, antilipidemic, and free radical scavenging effects in isoproterenol induced myocardial infarcted rats., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Background: Elevated nonfasting remnant cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol are causally associated with ischemic heart disease (IHD), but whether elevated nonfasting remnant cholesterol and LDL cholesterol both cause low-grade inflammation is currently unknown., Methods and Results: We studied 60 608 individuals from the Copenhagen General Population Study, the Copenhagen City Heart Study, and the Copenhagen Ischemic Heart Disease study, of whom 10 668 had IHD diagnosed between 1977 and 2011. We genotyped for variants affecting levels of nonfasting remnant cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, C-reactive protein by CRP alleles, and C-reactive protein by IL6R alleles. Using a multidirectional mendelian randomization design, we investigated possible causal associations between the lipoproteins and C-reactive protein and between the lipoproteins and IHD. A 1-mmol/L(39 mg/dL) higher level of nonfasting remnant cholesterol was associated observationally with a 37% (95% confidence interval, 35-39) higher C-reactive protein level and causally with a 28% (95% confidence interval, 10-48) higher level. For LDL cholesterol, a 1-mmol/L (39-mg/dL) higher level was associated observationally with a 7% (95% confidence interval, 6-7) higher C-reactive protein level, but we found no causal association. Likewise, higher levels of C-reactive protein did not associate causally with elevated nonfasting remnant cholesterol or LDL cholesterol. Finally, the causal risk ratio for IHD for a 1-mmol/L (39-mg/dL) higher level was 3.3 (95% confidence interval, 2.1-5.2) for nonfasting remnant cholesterol and 1.8 (95% confidence interval, 1.5-2.2) for LDL cholesterol. The causal associations for remnant cholesterol were present even in those without diabetes mellitus and obesity., Conclusions: Elevated nonfasting remnant cholesterol is causally associated with low-grade inflammation and with IHD, whereas elevated LDL cholesterol is associated causally with IHD without inflammation.

Objective: To evaluate the lipid profile in a population of university students., Methods: Cross-sectional study with 702 students, of both genders enrolled in various courses at a public university in Fortaleza-CE. The demographic data and data on lifestyle habits were collected through a self-administered questionnaire. The blood collection was performed in a clinical laboratory., Results: Showed a predominantly young population, with a mean age of 21.5 years with more females (62.7%). High levels of triglycerides, total cholesterol and cholesterol associated with low density lipoprotein (LDL-c) were found in 23.0%, 9.7% and 5.9% of students, respectively. The cholesterol associated with high density lipoprotein (HDL-c) was at reduced values in 12.0% of subjects and was significantly associated with smoking (p=0.0231) and physical inactivity (p=0.0357)., Conclusion: Changes in lipid profile are present in the young population and intervention studies should be encouraged in order to reduce the prevalence of cardiovascular disease in adulthood.

Background: Dyslipidemia is common among adolescents with type 2 diabetes (T2D)., Objective: To assess whether the lipoprotein ratios of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol or triglycerides/HDL or non-HDL cholesterol are more useful than the traditional lipid panel to predict increased arterial thickness in adolescents and young adults with T2D., Methods: We evaluated 244 adolescents and young adults with T2D in a cross-sectional study (mean age 18 years; 56% African American; 65% female). Demographics, anthropometrics, and laboratory data were collected. Arterial thickness was assessed with carotid intima media thickness (IMT). Bivariate correlations and general linear models were used to determine the independent contributions of the various lipid parameters to carotid IMT., Results: Bivariate correlations showed LDL/HDL ratio was the strongest predictor of carotid IMT (P < .02). After adjustment for potential covariates LDL/HDL was no longer significant. HDL cholesterol was the only lipid to independently (negatively) contribute to carotid IMT. Other risk factors that were independently associated with carotid IMT included age, race, sex, body mass index z score, and hemoglobin A1c. Together these cardiovascular risk factors explained <20% of the variance in carotid IMT., Conclusions: HDL cholesterol is the only lipid to independently associate with carotid IMT. Lipoprotein ratios and non-HDL did not provide additional information. The low variance in carotid IMT explained by traditional risk factors suggests nontraditional risk factors may be important to assess to better understand the contributors to early-stage atherosclerosis in adolescents and young adults with T2D., (Copyright © 2013 National Lipid Association. Purpose: Using data from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study, we sought to determine how well lipids measured at baseline and at 20 years predict the presence of subclinical atherosclerosis., Methods: Complete risk factor, coronary artery calcification (CAC), and carotid intima media thickness (CIMT) data were available for 2435 participants. Lipids were categorized into quartiles, CAC at Y20 was dichotomized as present/absent, and CIMT was dichotomized as ≥84 or <84th overall percentile. Multivariable logistic regression was used to model the association between lipids and CAC/CIMT. C statistics were used to assess the discriminative value of each lipid measure in predicting the presence of CAC or CIMT at Y20., Results: Lipid levels measured in young adulthood as well as middle age were both associated with subclinical disease in middle age. The discriminatory value of lipids was virtually identical at baseline, when participants were 18-30 years of age, and 20 years later. Neither baseline nor Y20 lipid data were strong predictors of Y20 subclinical disease despite statistically significant associations., Conclusions: These results are consistent with a growing body of evidence that early-life exposure to nonoptimal lipids matters and lifestyle modifications administered earlier in the lifespan could slow the progress of the atherosclerotic plaques., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Inc. Objective: Progression of carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) is a surrogate indicator for the early stages of atherosclerosis., Methods: The study investigated relationships between baseline lipoprotein cholesterol, triglyceride (TG), and apolipoprotein (Apo) B levels assessed with density gradient ultracentrifugation (DGU) and progression of posterior wall common CIMT in men (45-75 years of age) and women (55-74 years of age) in the control arm of a clinical trial. Participants had baseline posterior wall CIMT 0.7-2.0 mm, without significant stenosis. CIMT was assessed using B-mode ultrasound at baseline, and 12 and ~18 months. A DGU cholesterol panel that assessed the major lipoprotein classes and subclasses, plus triglycerides, lipoprotein (a) cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) peak time (inversely related to LDL particle density), and Apo B were performed on fasting baseline samples. Apo B was also measured using an enzyme linked immunosorbent assay., Results: Baseline CIMT was inversely associated (P < 0.001) with CIMT progression. After adjustment for baseline CIMT, significant predictors of posterior wall CIMT progression in linear regression analyses included LDL peak time (inverse, P = 0.045), total high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (inverse, P = 0.001), HDL(2)-C (inverse, P = 0.005), HDL(3)-C (inverse, P = 0.003), very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL)-C (P = 0.037), and VLDL(1+2)-C (P = 0.016)., Conclusion: These data indicate that DGU-derived indicators of the "atherogenic lipoprotein phenotype," including increased TG-rich lipoprotein cholesterol, lower HDL-C and HDL-C subfractions, and a greater proportion of LDL-C carried by more dense LDL particles, are associated with CIMT progression in men and women at moderate risk for coronary heart disease.

The study was conducted to assess the effects of a nomegestrol acetate subdermal contraceptive implant (Uniplant(R)) on the lipid profiles of indigenous Nigerian women. Cholesterol content of the major lipoproteins, along with total cholesterol and triglycerides, were measured in fasting blood samples collected before implant insertion and then at months 1, 3, 6, and 12 of use. All volunteers were of the reproductive age, healthy, and had no contraindications to hormonal contraception. The mean levels of cholesterol and low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) increased gradually, albeit insignificantly, from insertion to month 12 of implant use. An initial decline in the mean levels of high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), reaching a minimal level (37.31 +/- 4.95 mg/dl) at month 3 of implant use, was observed. This was followed by a gradual rise that peaked (39.73 +/- 5.53 mg/dL) at month 12. These values were, however, not significantly different from the preinsertion value. The only significant difference (p <0. 005 ) was in the mean level of triglycerides at month 12 (90.90 +/- 17.75 mg/dL) when compared with the preinsertion mean level of 81.77 +/- 24.14 mg/dL. Both values were, however, within normal limits. These results indicate that Uniplant does not have a deleterious effect on the lipid profiles of Nigerian acceptors and can be safely prescribed to women seeking contraception.

Purpose: Cross-sectional and longitudinal associations of serum lipids and lipoproteins with oral contraceptive (OC) use were examined among white and black women aged 18-27 years in 1985-86 and 1988-1991 in the Bogalusa Heart Study, a study of cardiovascular disease in a Southern community., Methods: Analyses of covariance., Results: In 1985-1986, white OC users had significantly (p < 0.05) higher adjusted mean total and low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterols, and lower high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol compared with nonusers; black OC users had higher triglycerides and LDL cholesterol, and lower HDL cholesterol. In 1988-1991, white OC users had higher total cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL cholesterol, while black OC users had higher triglycerides. OC use was unrelated to mean HDL cholesterol levels in 1988-1991; however, a lower percentage of white OC users than nonusers in 1988-1991 had HDL cholesterol levels < 35 mg/dl. Longitudinally, white OC nonusers at baseline who used OCs at follow-up had significant increases from baseline levels in total cholesterol, triglycerides, and very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) and LDL cholesterols; black women showed an increase only in LDL cholesterol. White women who stopped using OCs by follow-up had a decrease in VLDL and LDL cholesterols, and an increase in HDL cholesterol. White OC users at both exams also had a significant increase in HDL cholesterol, whereas women who began using OCs by follow-up did not., Conclusions: The unfavorable lipid profile associated with OC use was not apparent upon discontinued use. Lack of an adverse effect of OC use on HDL cholesterol at follow-up may be the result of changing formulations, and requires further examination.
